Battlefield 2042 AI Soldiers Will Be Used to Fill 128-Player Matches, Hazard Zone Not Battle Royale

Battlefield 2042

In case you didn’t know, DICE is aiming for the moon with Battlefield 2042 by featuring 128-player matches, which is a big jump from the franchise’s 64-player matches from past iterations of the franchise. Given the sheer amount of people needed to fill one match, DICE has a solution so that matches start right away, and will always be full of action, and that’s with AI soldiers!

During today’s Battlefield 2042 Briefing devstream, DICE GM Oskar Oskar Gabrielson and Design Director Daniel Berlin talked about it, and mentioned how AI can fill up the slots of players who leave servers, or so that servers can start without needing to fill all 128 player slots. In addition to that, DICE also confirmed that players can start matches with AI teammates and enemies in order to get some practice in as well, and to study the maps.

The EA Answers page for Battlefield 2042 has been updated today to reflect this as well:

Also new is the introduction of AI Soldiers (Artificial Intelligence) to the series. As a multiplayer-only experience, it’s important for us to let you play Battlefield 2042 when and how you want. Here is what that looks like in the All-Out Warfare experience of Conquest and Breakthrough:

  • Multiplayer – AI soldiers are used for server-filling capabilities, ensuring your matches remain full, no matter your location.

  • Co-Op – Allows you to play together with friends, against AI soldiers.

  • Solo – If you wish to perfect your skills for multiplayer, you can even play alone against AI soldiers.

In the same devstream, DICE talked about one of the new modes it’s introducing to BF 2042, and that’s called “Hazard Zone.” While the mode will focus on squads, DICE has confirmed that it not a battle royale mode. There’s a new screenshot released for it too.

Per the press release sent on the day of the game’s reveal, EA described Hazard Zone as: “An all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game-type for the Battlefield franchise that is a modern take on the multiplayer experience that is distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes.”

What are your thoughts on AI soldiers being used to in order to ensure servers are full? Personally, I want to see it in action for myself before passing judgement, as this could work out well, or be a disaster if the AI’s are too good, or too dumb.

Should DICE also offer  “human-only” 64-player matches as well? Let us know your thoughts below.
