In Borderlands 4, players will have a fun new feature — the option to either lower or completely mute Claptrap’s voice.

Claptrap is often seen as the mascot of the Borderlands series, known for his loud humor and constant talking. While many enjoy his commentary, others may prefer a quieter experience. This new option gives players the chance to enjoy the game without his never-ending chatter, making it a welcome change for some.

Sam Winkler, the narrative director, shared his thoughts on this new option on X (formerly Twitter). He shared that some lines were written just for the Claptrap volume control feature. One of them includes, what he called, “maybe the dumbest and most niche reference” to a “terrible accent” from a classic immersive sim.

A screenshot of the option shows that players can’t increase Claptrap’s volume — they can only reduce it, mute it, or set it at 100%. However, Winkler mentioned that he had proposed the idea of doubling the robot’s voice volume, but it appears the leadership rejected that suggestion. He said, “I pitched that you should be able to put him from 0% to 200% but i think the government said no.”

In related news, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford made a statement about Borderlands 4 that was poorly received, suggesting that ‘real fans’ would pay $80 for the game. In response to the backlash, Pitchford issued a partial apology, clarifying that he never intended to take anyone for granted.

Borderlands 4 is set to release on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
