Death Stranding 2: Fragile to Play a “Significant Role”, Hideo Kojima Reveals

Death Stranding 2 Fragile

In a recent episode of Hideo Kojima presents Brain Structure, a podcast run by Kojima himself, we learn a bit more about Death Stranding 2. The episode featured Geoff Keighley, executive producer and host of The Game Awards. The episode involved a brief discussion on Death Stranding 2’s Fragile and a couple of other points related to the game.

In the interview, Kojima and Keighley talked a bit about the game industry as a whole and the influence that comes from The Game Awards. Keighley managed to slip in a question regarding Death Stranding 2, however, and while Kojima wasn’t able to share much, we do find out the relevance of new cast members as well as a possible hint regarding the sequel.

It was revealed in the podcast that Kojima actually wanted to cast actress Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who was one of the presenters at The Game Awards 2022. “You know, I’ve actually always been a fan of Jessica [Henwick]. Just between us—well, this is a podcast, so it won’t be a secret! But right to the end, I considered Jessica for a role in DS2,” he mentions.

When asked about the DS2 trailer in The Game Awards, Kojima stated that Fragile will be playing a “significant role” in the game alongside announced cast members Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna.

Elle and Shioli… don’t appear in the trailer, but… in the near future, I think I can reveal what roles they’ll be playing. But with the “Who Am I?” teasers… I’ve introduced three female actors. You know, I can’t reveal much right now, but those three women… will play significant roles. I can’t say much right now, but Fragile will be important. As for what roles Elle and Shioli will play, that’s something people should look forward to. They’ll be blown away by the crazy things we’ve done! I can’t reveal anyting yet, but I will in the future. It’s something nobody has ever seen before.

Finally, Kojima commented on the DS2 trailer’s hidden details, encouraging fans to rewatch the trailer on a larger screen to notice them. He also drops a cryptic hint regarding the music used when he appeared at The Game Awards:

Well, the thing is, watching it on a phone, the screen’s quite small, so… you should really watch it on a much bigger screen. If you look at all the details, there are a lot of hints in there. Some people may have noticed by zooming in on the cockpit and so on. Everything in the trailer is in the game, so… I hope people zoom in, look closely at the trailer… and talk about it. And there’s a reason I appeared with that music playing. [Laughs] Have I said too much?

Kojima stated that 2023 will be a busy year for him and his team, so may get updates on DS2 sometime next year. Death Stranding 2 is currently in development with no release date, and has been confirmed to launch on the PS5.
