The Battlefield 6 Open Beta wasn’t just a pleasant surprise since it felt like a call back to BF3 and BF4, but even on a technical level, it was surprising to see how the game client was running so well on both consoles and PC with months from release.

While the shooter ran well on all console platforms during the beta, that wasn’t the case, as the developers had issues running the game smoothly on the underpowered Xbox Series S, which isn’t that surprising given the game threw a ton at you at once with effects, scale, and whatnot.

Battlefield 6 Devs Said Making the Shooter Run on Xbox Series S Was a Struggle

In an interview, the Technical Director of Battlefield 6, Christian Buhl, admitted the dev team had issues with the Xbox Series S.

Buhl said, “I will say that the biggest thing we did that was a challenge for us was [dealing with the console’s limited] memory…Xbox Series S does have less memory than even our mid-spec PC. And so there was a point…Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months ago where we kind of realized that a lot of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”

As a result of this, the developers focused on “optimizing” memory usage of BF6, and these improvements made the “whole game better and more stable” across all platforms. That didn’t stop the developers from further optimizing the Xbox Series S version, though.

“We were doing so much testing…we were collecting all this data. Once we kind of started running all our levels through it, and were able to see where the problems were, after a month or two, we had kind of resolved all of our memory issues on Series S,” explained Buhl.

All’s well that ends well, I guess.

When it comes to console performance of Battlefield 6, we now know the specifics when it comes to resolution and more, not just for the Series S, but for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X too.

Outside tech performance, console-only crossplay has been confirmed as well, which should please players outside of PC.

Battlefield 6 will be released on October 10 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and our first look at the campaign will take place later this month at the Tokyo Game Show.
