Modern Warfare 2 Sales Top $800 Million in 3 Days, Largest Opening Weekend in Franchise History

Modern Warfare 2 Sales

It looks like the earlier reports regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 doing gangbusters at launch were true, as Activision has now sent out the official press release regarding it, and the game has raked in a massive amount of money for publisher already.

In the press release, Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 2 has topped $800 million sell-through (meaning sold to consumers) in just three days! This makes the MW2 launch, the biggest opening weekend in franchise history!

In addition to that, here are more astounding numbers provided by Activision:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Sets New Records for Unique Players and Hours Played for a Premium Call of Duty Launch
  • Becomes the Biggest Entertainment Opening of the Year
  • Launch Weekend Outdoes ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Box Office Openings Combined, Surpasses Previous Franchise Records Set in 2011 by Modern Warfare 3

Here’s a statement from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick regarding the tremendous amount of money that Modern Warfare 2 pulled in:

“Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone belongs to them” – Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activison Blizzard

Through only Modern Warfare 2’s first three days of release, it has already beaten the previous five-day franchise record held by the original Modern Warfare 3 back in 2011. This is the biggest opening ever in Call of Duty history, and has also established new records in player participation numbers for numer of unique players, hours played in its first three days, too.

Given how Warzone 2 is about to release on November 16, Activision will surely have something to look forward to outside of MW2’s launch.

Congrats, Infinity Ward and Activision! Now that we all know the game is already successful, let’s have some of the old legacy features back, shall we?
