Remedy Aspired to Be ‘European Naughty Dog,’ Says Alan Wake 2 Director

Even before the success of Alan Wake 2, Remedy Entertainment was already a beloved studio among gamers. The team behind classics like Max Payne, the original Alan Wake, and Control has long been recognized for creating unique, memorable games that set them apart.
However, with the release of Alan Wake 2, Remedy reached new heights of mainstream success. The survival horror game received widespread acclaim for its stunning graphics and immersive storytelling—qualities often associated with the works of Naughty Dog.
“We Should Be the European Version of Naughty Dog,” Says Alan Wake 2 Director

In a podcast with Behind The Voice, the director of Alan Wake 2, Kyle Rowley revealed that Remedy has drawn significant inspiration from the team behind Uncharted and The Last of Us. This influence has been evident since Remedy’s Quantum Break and played a major role in shaping Alan Wake 2. “I think we should aim to be the European version of Naughty Dog,” Rowley shared.
This ambitious approach to development resulted in a critically acclaimed game, but it also came with high costs. Despite the critical and commercial praise, with over 1 million copies sold—making it the fastest Remedy game to reach this milestone—and meeting its sales projections, Alan Wake 2 was not profitable as of November 2024. Remedy acknowledged they may have overinvested in the project but remains optimistic about the game’s long-term sales potential.
In other Naughty Dog news, Neil Druckmann revealed that a new project from Naughty Dog has been in development since 2020. While Sony will decide when to announce the game, Druckmann has been granted full creative control over its direction.

The absolute garbage people are talking on N4G lol. I 100% agree with this. Back when Max Payne 2 came out, their ingame cutscenes, like the first game, were very basic and lacking. Look at ANY cutscene from Jak 2 and you will see the difference in who was more capable back then.
But with every game since Max Payne 2 their performance capture skills and translation into their OWN proprietary game engine got better and better. Today they can easily be put right there beside Naughty Dog.
CDPR NEVER will be there though lol with their broken ass games at launch since the very first Witcher. I have no idea why I am seeing articles blowing smoke up their butts since the game awards. People have awful memory loss when it comes to CDPR it seems.
