Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and 2 Does Support Crossplay Between PS4 and PS5
With the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 on PS4 and PS5 last week, there’s been a lot of confusion among fans, specifically around crossplay between the two platforms. While initial reports indicated that PS5 and PS4 players could only play with one another if both players ran the PS4 version, Activision has come out to clarify that, regardless of which version you play, players can, in fact, matchmake with one another.
Sadly, there is still no cross-platform play with players on non-PlayStation platforms.
Newly Released Black Ops Ports for PlayStation Have Crossplay Between PS4 and PS5 Versions
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the official Call of Duty updates account issued a statement regarding cross-platform play between PS5 and PS4 players. It reads:
“PS4 and PS5 players are able to matchmake with one another. There is no cross-platform play with PS3 or other hardware platforms. Also, Season Pass owners are able to matchmake with non-Season Pass owners in both titles.”
Well, glad to see them clarify that confusion. For those wondering why the PS3 version of the game isn’t included in this, well, probably for a few reasons. One, hackers. While the PS4 and PS5 aren’t 100% hacker-free, the PS3 is notorious for its hacking scene despite the console being decades old now. Two, with Sony announcing that they will soon shut down the PS3 digital store, we wouldn’t rule out them sunsetting other aspects. Plus, this means PS3 owners will no longer be able to access any DLC for either game once that begins in August.
You all may be laughing at why anyone would still be playing the PS3, but it was only yesterday that I booted mine up to play Metal Gear Solid 4 (I know, the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 is coming out soon). I do completely understand the lack of cross-platform support, though. It might also explain why crossplay isn’t supported between the Xbox and PC versions, though we are hopeful that an Xbox Series X|S native release is coming that will also be cross-play with the PlayStation version.
