With Battlefield 2042’s Season 3 well underway, DICE has now shifted its sights on what’s coming to the game next year. These Battlefield 2042 plans for 2023 include the Specialist rework to traditional Battlefield classes, what’s incoming to Season 4 and the confirmation that we’ll see Season 5!
While update 3.1 is set for release sometime this month, update 3.2 will be making its way out “early next year,” and will bring in a change a lot of Battlefield fans have been looking forward to, and that’s the Specialist rework!
Battlefield 2042 – What’s Coming in 2023:
Specialist Rework to Traditional Battlefield Classes:
Update 3.2 will be a big one for us with the reintroduction of Classes to Battlefield 2042. All our existing Specialists will be placed within defined roles with a set of gadgets and equipment that best suit their purpose on the battlefield. While we’re not revealing them today, our Season 4 Specialist will be placed within the Recon class. This will also be the final Specialist that we’re planning to bring to Battlefield 2042. With the return to Classes and our roster of 14 in total, we are happy with the amount of Specialists and variety of gameplay that they will allow you to experience. So our focus will be continuing to listen to your feedback in order to expand the sandbox in other ways by bringing design and balance changes for your class-based combat, along with continuing to expand on skins and cosmetics to give you more ways to stand out on the battlefield.
DICE has also shared that Season 4 will mark the end of Year 1 and will launch in “early 2023.” This will once again bring in a new Specialist, a new Battle Pass, new armaments, a new map and more! According to DICE, the BF2042 Season 4 map will be “smaller, shorter, and linear designed for up close and personal, close-quarters combat.”
Just a few weeks ago, DICE announced that work on all-new content for the game is well underway, and today, the studio confirmed that this will indeed be Season 5! Same as in past seasons, this will house a new map, new hardware, a new Battle Pass and more.
Interestingly enough, the studio also shared that they have a mix of veteran developers working alongside new developers breathing new life into the game. According to the studio, in Season 5, players will see them “lean into previous games” and how they can show up in BF2042. We even get a hint at what classic Battlefield 4 map is incoming to BF204!
According to DICE, the Season 5 map, “The new Season 5 map coming will be a forgotten battleground that last saw combat in the Battlefield 4 era. An overgrown area, engulfed with vegetation and by the 2042 war. It will encourage a combination of vehicular and infantry combat meaning teamplay is the key to victory.”
Given how the game has seen a massive uptick in player counts recently, this is definitely good news. Add in that a free access trial is happening this month across all platforms, and well, could BF2042 really be making a comeback? I wouldn’t be opposed to that.
