Tomorrow, November 8, marks five years since Death Stranding first launched on the PS4. Since then, Hideo Kojima’s unique title made its way to PC and later debuted as a native version on the PS5. However, today, fans received a surprise announcement that the Death Stranding Director’s Cut is now available on Xbox Series X|S.

Players can now buy, download, and play Death Stranding Director’s Cut on Xbox Series X|S through the Microsoft Store at a special launch sale price of $19.99, discounted from the original price of $39.99.

It’s still unclear if Microsoft will bring the game to Game Pass, though the PC version was previously available there. Additionally, Death Stranding Director’s Cut has joined Amazon Luna, allowing players to stream the game on compatible devices.

This news raises a big question: does this mean PlayStation is changing its approach with Xbox, or is it simply a one-time case? It’s likely the second option, as Kojima Productions shared today in a press release that the studio, led by Kojima himself, now fully owns the rights to the Death Stranding IP.

This ownership means there likely wouldn’t be an issue bringing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach to Xbox Series X|S in the future, though there’s a chance PlayStation has secured some exclusivity. For now, Death Stranding 2 is only confirmed for PS5, with no release date announced.

Two years ago, Kojima announced a collaboration with Microsoft, leading to the development of “OD,” a project he described as “a game like no other.” From here, we can expect to see more of Kojima’s projects on Xbox platforms, but as of now, we can only wait and see what comes next.

If you’re not sure whether to pick it up or not, check out our review here where we state, “Death Stranding is a title that will be remembered for a very long time. Offering a unique approach to gamers and showcasing what Hideo Kojima can do when he appears to have full control over a video game.”
