Insomniac Games Reportedly Made Only $567 on Sunset Overdrive

There may be a good reason why Sunset Overdrive hasn’t gotten a sequel yet, as the latest info from the Insomniac Games’ ransomware attack has revealed the game’s budget and how much Insomniac Games earned on it.

As posted on ResetEra, the Xbox and PC exclusive title, Sunset Overdrive, reportedly cost the studio roughly $42.6 million dollars to make, with a net profit hitting over $49.7 million. Approximately $7 million past the breakeven point, though for the studio, their shared cut was only a measly $567 dollars. No, you’re not reading that wrong. Insomniac Games’ cut for Sunset Overdrive is barely more than a single PS5.

Ultimately, the title reached 1.9 million units sold across Xbox and PC.

That tiny revenue share that Insomniac, coupled with the game’s budget, may be reasons why we haven’t gotten a sequel yet, despite Insomniac expressing they’d love to do another.

Even if the PlayStation fanbase is far more significant than what is on Xbox, the reward may not outweigh the risks. That’s not to say it can never happen, but with this information now public, it may be time to keep those expectations in check.

However, that’s not the worst of it, as while there are some titles that earned the studio no money, their biggest commercial failure appears to be EA’s Fuse. The studio earned no money on that, with a $36.2 million budget and net sale of $4.8 million. We are looking at about a $31.5 million loss, which is their biggest reported loss on the sheet.

Looking at this from a bigger picture, one could understand why Insomniac Games finally decided to sell to Sony. The Spider-Man franchise has certainly seen a major turnaround for the studio, which may also be why they’re working on a Wolverine game, and reportedly X-Men next.

Expect plenty of more news to surface throughout the day, as more and more information is uncovered from the breach.
