While EA hasn’t revealed the next Battlefield game just yet, we do know it’s in development, and it seems it’s already in a playable state according to EA.
This was revealed by EA CEO Andrew Wilson during the company’s recent quarterly fiscal call. Wilson states, “Motive (Dead Space remake), armed with cutting edge Frostbite technology and compelling storytelling is joining Dice, Criterion and Ripple Effect to build a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer and single-player experiences. This is the largest Battlefield team in franchise history.”
Wilson adds, that just a “few weeks ago,” he was able to visit the teams, and “couldn’t be more excited” on what the dev teams showed and what they were able to play, confirming the in-development Battlefield game is already in a playable state. Mind, it’s unclear whether this is the single-player or multiplayer portion of the upcoming shooter.
In the same call, Wilson was asked about EA’s “live service bucket” and whether can break up how it is between sports, action shooter, casual, etc. Wilson points to Apex Legends, and along the conversation, adds, “I’ve just spent a whole bunch of time with the collective Battlefield team, playing what they’re building and it is going to be another tremendous live service.”
Yep, that basically confirms that the upcoming Battlefield game will be a live service game, which isn’t surprising given Wilson also mentioned how the new Battlefield game is being built “for the future,” and how it will be a “truly connected ecosystem.”
While I understand why EA is pushing for live service, let’s hope that it fares way better than Battlefield 2042. Sure, the shooter managed to (kind of) redeem itself, but it’s still a far cry from previous Battlefield games. For reference, BF2042 had a total of seven seasons, with Season 7: Turning Point confirmed to be the last one, though DICE will still support it with patches and events.
Are you OK with this development? Let’s hope we get a proper reveal of the next Battlefield game soon.
