The City of London Police have announced the arrest of a 17-year-old in connection with the Rockstar Games and Uber hacks this month. The suspect is alleged to be the GTA 6 hacker and connected with the Lapsus$ hacking group, which leaked loads of gameplay footage of the still-in-development game.
The arrest took place yesterday on the evening of September 22 in Oxfordshire, as part of an investigation supported by the National Crime Agency’s National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU).
The teenage suspect is currently in police custody. Lapsus$ has been behind multiple cybersecurity attacks on industry giants in the last few years. The group most recently hacked into Rockstar India’s Slack channel and obtained hours of alpha footage of GTA 6, and allegedly the source code of GTA 6 and GTA 5 as well.
“teapotuberhacker” (as the hacker calls himself) threatened to sell the source code unless contacted by Rockstar with a suitable purchase offer. He has also claimed responsibility for the Uber security breach last week.
Rockstar eventually released a rare statement expressing its disappointment with the leaks, and reassuring players that work would continue on GTA 6 as planned and that there would be no service disruptions for existing products.
