Report: Silent Hill 2 Remake, “Return to Silent Hill” Movie & Silent Hill: Ascension to Be Announced in Silent Hill Transmission

Silent Hill Transmission Stream

Information scraped from the YouTube metadata for the upcoming Silent Hill Transmission event going live later today has almost confirmed the existence of a number of new Silent Hill projects: a Silent Hill 2 remake, the “Return to Silent Hill” movie, and “Silent Hill: Ascension,” which is most likely a new Silent Hill game.

Yesterday, YouTube channel Survival Horror Network received a curious automatic copyright notice while preparing to stream the original Silent Hill 2 title. The notice stated that Konami would either be monetizing or receiving analytics about the stream, claiming that the content pertained to “Silent Hill 2: Part 1.” If the notice is indeed about an upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, this suggests that the game may be split into multiple episodes, quite like the recent Final Fantasy VII episodic remake.

Shortly afterwards, a new YouTube channel “SILENT HILL (Official)” surfaced, with a listed creation of September 29, 2022. Konami recently announced that new Silent Hill announcements would be made at 2PM PDT/5PM EDT/5AM HKT on October 19, and a “SILENT HILL Transmission” stream is set to go live on the channel 10 minutes before that time.

ResetEra user Toumari scraped the tags for the stream, and found the following information:

The tags most notably include “SILENT HILL 2,” “SILENT HILL: Ascension,” and “Return to SILENT HILL,” but have since been removed from the metadata of the stream in all languages.

Both the Silent Hill 2 remake and the new project (henceforth referred to as Ascension) have been rumored to be in development for months, while Christophe Gans, director of the 2006 Silent Hill movie, has been speaking about the creation of a new Silent Hill movie since 2020. Earlier this month, not only did he confirm the development of a new Silent Hill movie, he also revealed that there were several new Silent Hill games in development at Konami and that he was working with Team Silent, the original developers of the series at Konami. Journalist Alan Jones later reported that the movie would be called “Return to Silent Hill,” and would begin filming in February 2023.

Bloober Team, developers of The Medium and Layers of Fear, announced a partnership with Konami in June last year. Earlier, the studio had confirmed the development of a new horror game in collaboration with a very “famous publisher.” In his interview, Gans also confirmed that Bloober Team were developing the Silent Hill 2 remake, and also said that several other teams were involved with the other Silent Hill projects.

Gaming blog WhatIfGaming came forward today with details from an anonymous, unverified source about the development of the Silent Hill 2 remake. We encourage our readers to take this with a grain of salt, but the report lines up with most of the aforementioned rumors:

  • It will be developed by Bloober Team, famous of The Medium, and the Layers of Fear series.
  • The game will offer an over-the-shoulder camera view.
  • We see the return Masahiro Ito, and Akira Yamaoka.
  • The game will be a 12-month long PlayStation 5 Exclusive and also on PC. There is no release date, but the game will be available for wishlisting on the PlayStation Store after the reveal.
  • The graphics have been described as ‘amazing’ and something that is truly next-gen.

Masahiro Ito of the original Team Silent and composer Akira Yamaoka are Silent Hill veterans, and Gans’ statements already confirm the involvement of the original Silent Hill team. No definite reports have surfaced as of yet concerning the other teams and developers involved with Silent Hill projects, but a rumor from last year points to the return of Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions to Silent Hill following 2014’s P.T. and the subsequent cancellation of Silent Hills.

Not much is currently known about Ascension, or the Silent Hill: A Short Message project which recently received an age rating in Korea. The leaked playable teaser “Sakura” from last month could very well be connected to Ascension, but we can’t say that for sure just yet.

We’ll know the truth of all these rumors once the Silent Hill Transmission goes live at 2PM PDT/5PM EDT/5AM HKT later today. Stay tuned here at MP1st for our live coverage of the event.
