Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Patch 5 to Add PS5 Pro Support, Dark Angels Chapter Pack, and More

Saber Interactive has announced the upcoming features in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Patch 5.0, set for release in the first half of December. The patch will introduce native PS5 Pro support, the Dark Angels Chapter Pack, and Operation: Obelisk, along with other key updates.

Alongside the upcoming update info, Saber also announced that Space Marine 2 has now amassed five million players to date! In case you were wondering whether the game was a success or not, well, it’s pretty evident it is.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 PS5 Pro Features Arriving in First Half of December

For PS5 Pro users, the enhanced version of the game will offer two preset modes: Quality and Performance, both with improvements. In Quality mode, the framerate will be locked at 30fps, with a dynamic resolution scaling between 1080p and 2160p, using PSSR for upscaling. On the base PS5, the resolution will range from 1080p to 1440p, with upscaling to 4K via FSR.

In Performance mode, players can expect 60fps at a resolution of 1080p-1440p, with upscaling to 4K via PSSR. This represents a significant leap over the 720p-1080p range of the PS5 version, at least on paper. However, thorough testing will be required after the patch is released to fully assess the improvements.

The patch will also add the Dark Angels Chapter Pack, which brings the Dark Angels Champion, a unique armor set, and a new banner for the Bulwark class. Players will also receive additional weapons and armor, adding depth and variety to the game.

Another major feature of Patch 5.0 is Operation: Obelisk, a new mission that runs parallel to the final events of the campaign. In this mission, players will be sent to Demerium, where they must rotate a replica of an obelisk to disrupt the energy flow of the Aurora device. However, the mission will be far from easy, as players will be under siege by the forces of Chaos, including a new enemy type: the Tzaangor Enlightened. These enemies will also appear in other operations following the patch’s release.

For PC gamers, Patch 5.0 will also introduce support for NVIDIA’s Frame Generation DLSS and FSR 3, offering enhanced graphical performance and smoother gameplay.

If you haven’t played the game yet and are wondering if it’s worth buying, check out our review of Space Marine 2, where we state, “If you’re looking for an action-packed shooter that lets you turn off your brain a bit and just lay waste to enemies, then this is the game for you.”

Once the patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know, so stay tuned.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Due in 2025; Brings Cross-Play, Photo Mode, and 12 New Subclasses

Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, are currently celebrating the success of mods for their RPG. Since the official tools were released in September, and more than 3,000 mods have been uploaded, which have been downloaded 70 million times.

Building on this success, the studio has now made a detailed announcement on Steam, outlining the exciting new features coming in Patch 8. This major update, expected sometime in 2025, will introduce cross-play, Photo Mode, and 12 new subclasses.

Baldur’s Gate.3 Patch #8 Will Finally Bring Crossplay

Baldur’s Gate 3 crossplay

Whether you’re joining PS5 players from your PC, or jumping into a game with Mac users from your Xbox, Baldur’s Gate 3 will soon feature full cross-platform progression, including cross-play. Once the update is live, you’ll be able to invite friends to join your cross-play lobby directly, regardless of platform, and find available multiplayer lobbies with friends on other systems using the Larian Network.

Patch 8 will also introduce a new way to play your favourite class, adding one new subclass for each of the existing Bard, Barbarian, Cleric, Druid, Paladin, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock and Wizard classes in the game.

Expect new abilities, animations, VFX, summons and cantrips, and unique voiced dialogue lines for the Oathbreaker Knight with written reactivity for Oathbreakers, along with a touch of homebrewing on certain actions to enhance your role-playing experience.

Here is the full list of new subclasses that will be available in Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2025:

  • Bard – College of Glamour
  • Barbarian – Path of Giants
  • Cleric – Death Domain
  • Druid – Circle of Stars
  • Paladin – Oath of the Crown
  • Fighter – Arcane Archer
  • Monk – Drunken Master
  • Ranger – Swarmkeeper
  • Rogue – Swashbuckler
  • Sorcerer – Shadow Magic
  • Warlock – Hexblade
  • Wizard – Bladesinging

As if the new subclasses weren’t enough, Larian Studios is also fulfilling the dream of many fans by introducing Photo Mode. This feature allows players to experiment with a wide range of camera settings, choosing which characters to appear on screen and even adding stickers for extra flair. To complete the experience, post-processing effects can be applied at the end of a photo session to give your images a polished look.

Although Larian Studios has not yet shared a specific release date for this new patch, the team is planning to conduct a stress test in January 2025. During this test, a controlled group of players will get the chance to experience all the new features firsthand. Players who wish to participate will be able to sign up for the stress test a few days before its launch. This test will help catch bugs and fine-tune the update before the full release.

As mentioned earlier, Patch 8 will bring not just new content, but also bug fixes and polished cinematics. For example, Shadowheart’s hair dye no longer washes away when she takes a dip with her romantic partner.

In other Baldur’s Gate 3 news, one hardcore fan has spent $20,000 on a custom-made Astarion sex doll.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.058 Released for Improved Parry Audio, Starting Class Adjustment and More

It seems HexWorks isn’t done updating Lords of the Fallen, as we got a Thanksgiving patch for the game that’s live now on all platforms. Tagged by the studio as patch v1.6.49, those on consoles will see this as Lords of the Fallen update 1.058.

Curious what got changed? Read on, Lampbearer!

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.058 Improves Parry Sound Effects, Brings Various Adjustments

Exiled Stalker Starting Class Adjustment:

The Exiled Stalker has been adjusted to provide players with a ‘Light’ playstyle option when selecting their starting class. While some players prefer a heavier, more powerful combat style (catered for with the Udirangr Warwolf, Hallowed Knight, and others), we realised that players preferring a more nimble approach to combat had more limited options. To that effect, the Exiled Stalker is now faster and more agile, better representing the original vision for the character.

Parry Feedback Sound Effect:

Based on community feedback, we’ve updated the parry sound effects to make them more satisfying and impactful, offering clearer audio cues when successfully parrying an enemy’s attack.

Vigor Pickup Adjustment:

Another popular community request, Vigor collection upon defeating enemies is now automatic, meaning you no longer need to manually collect it with the lamp. We noticed many players were either forfeiting hard-earned vigor, by simply forgetting to collect it, or felt the process disrupted the gameplay flow. We hope this now helps to streamline the game experience, allowing you to instead put more energy and focus into the battles ahead.

Byron’s Quest Update:

We’ve made adjustments to Byron’s optional questline, providing players with additional opportunities to encounter Winterberry, to help prevent scenarios where players could unknowingly fail to complete it.

Unbridled Focus Pendant Fix:

The Unbridled Focus pendant, which reduces the cost of Channeling and Aura abilities, now functions as intended. Thanks to fellow lampbearer, Syren Kindra, for bringing this bug to our attention!

The Hushed Saint Adjustment:

The Hushed Saint boss battle has been adjusted in accordance to player feedback, to provide a more dynamic and satisfying melee combat encounter, retaining the same degree of challenge but with less emphasis on mounted combat.

Poison Buildup Bug Fix:

Small bug fix ensuring poison buildup effect now works as intended.

While we’ve mentioned before that HexWorks is probably done updating Lords of the Fallen given they’re now confirmed to be working on its sequel, we’ve been proven wrong time and time again. If the developers release something special for the holidays, I wouldn’t be surprised.

You can keep track of all our Lords of the Fallen coverage here.

Dead by Daylight’s Latest Update Version 8.4.0 Brings the “Doomed Curse” Content on All Platforms

Behaviour Interactive has released Dead by Daylight update 3.32 (PS5/XSX version 8.400.001) which is for the multiplayer game’s “Doomed Curse” content drop! This brings a new killer in The Houndmaster, as well as a new survivor in Taurie Cain.

You can check out both characters’ abilities below, alongside a host of gameplay adjustments to various characters, bug fixes and more, just in time for Thanksgiving Weekend!

Dead by Daylight “Doomed Curse” Update New Content Outlined

Content

New Killer – The Houndmaster

Killer Power – Scent of Blood

The Houndmaster and her dog operate as one. Her commands are followed without question or delay.

Special Ability: Chase

The Chase Command sends the dog out at high speed. Pressing the Power button again redirects the Chase, pivoting the dog’s path. When the dog catches a Survivor, the dog starts a Grab. The Survivor becomes Hindered and is pulled toward The Houndmaster. The Survivor can get free by stunning the dog or can be rescued by another Survivor. Grabs that end without Injury leave the Survivor Hindered. Grab duration is shorter for Survivors with the Endurance status effect.

Special Ability: Search

The Search Command sends the dog to a target location, creating a Search Path. It has its own lullaby and, as it moves, its Houndsense radius rises over distance traveled. Survivors who enter the radius are affected by Houndsense and revealed by Killer Instinct. If The Houndmaster follows the dog’s Search Path, she gains increased movement speed over time. Leaving the Search Path ends the bonus movement speed.

Special Effect: Houndsense

Healthy Survivors affected by Houndsense receive Deep Wounds when Injured. Injured Survivors affected by Houndsense suffer from louder Grunts of Pain and longer Pools of Blood when put into the Dying state.

New Killer Perks:

All-Shaking Thunder

After you fall from a height, your lunge attack distance is increased by 75/75/75% for 8/12/16 seconds.

This perk has a 5/5/5-second cooldown.

Scourge Hook: Jagged Compass

At the start of the trial, up to 4 random hooks are changed into scourge hooks. You see their auras in white.

When a Survivor is unhooked from a non-scourge hook, it becomes a scourge hook.

When you hook a Survivor on a Scourge Hook, the aura of the generator with the most progress is revealed in yellow for 6/8/10 seconds.

No Quarter

When a Survivor reaches 75/75/75% of a self-heal, they are faced with continuous skill checks.

If one of these skill checks is missed or the heal is interrupted, the Survivor becomes broken for 20/25/30 seconds.

New Survivor – Taurie Cain

New Survivor Perks:

Invocation: Treacherous Crows

When in the Basement near the circle, press the ability button 2 to begin the Invocation.

Invocations take 60/60/60 seconds. Other Survivors will see your aura during this and can join an ongoing interaction.

Once the Invocation is completed:

  1. You become injured and broken for the rest of the trial.
  2. When a Survivor is in the Terror Radius and the Killer scares a crow, their aura is revealed to all Survivors for 1/1.5/2 seconds.

Completing the Invocation disables that perk for all Survivors.

Clean Break

After you finish healing another Survivor, while being healed by another Survivor, press the ability button 1 to gain broken.

After 80/70/60 seconds, you become healthy.

This perk does not activate if you are already broken. The effect is cancelled if you go in the dying state.

Shoulder the Burden

Once per trial, as long as you are not on death hook, press the ability button 2 in front of a hooked Survivor to unhook them.

When they are unhooked, they lose 1 hook state and you gain 1 hook state. You also scream and become Exposed for 60/50/40 seconds.

Report: Stalker 2 Receiving Negative Reviews from Individuals Allegedly Paid by Russians to Damage Its Reputation

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been well-received by both the public and critics. However, its success has attracted some opposition, particularly from individuals in Russia. According to reports on social media, some Russians on Telegram are offering money in exchange for posting negative reviews of the game on Steam and TikTok.

This is likely due to the fact that Stalker 2 is developed by GSC Game World, a Ukrainian studio, which has openly opposed Russia and its actions. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has led to tensions, with some of the game’s developers even joining the fight to defend their country against Russian forces.

As spotted by DualShockers, these buyers allegedly provide guidance on which aspects of the game to criticize, such as technical problems and bugs. While Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl does have some minor issues, the developers at GSC Game World are actively working to address them.

Currently, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl holds a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with 80% of the total 42,154 reviews being positive. Some negative reviews do not specifically address the points mentioned by the reviewers, but others clearly follow the suggested criticisms. Often, these reviews are very short and simply advise against purchasing the game due to its technical issues, which raises suspicions about their authenticity.

A recent post on the matter shared two examples of anti-Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl campaigns, including a price list and a template for negative reviews. Check the post below:

However, the compensation being offered is relatively low—100 Russian ruble for a Steam review, which is just under $1 (0.92) at the current exchange rate.

At this time of writing, there has been no official statement from the developers regarding the situation, but as we get more information, we’ll make sure to keep you all informed here at MP1st.

MP1st’s review of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl gave it a score of 8 out of 10, stating, “If you’re a fan of the Stalker franchise, then Stalker 2 is going to be everything you’d hoped for and probably expected from it.

Riot Games Dev Advises Call of Duty Ricochet Team: “The Tools to Fight Cheats Are There, It’s a Matter of Deploying Them Effectively”

A developer from the Vanguard team, the famous anti-cheat system created by Riot Games for its League of Legends and Valorant titles, recently commented on one of the Ricochet team’s posts to share his thoughts on the current cheating situation in Warzone and Black Ops 6.

The developer, GamerDoc, a former esports player and now an anti-cheat analyst at Riot Vanguard, responded to a tweet that highlighted recent efforts by Team Ricochet to improve anti-cheat systems. The tweet outlined the following updates:

  • Identified and fixed a data outage that lowered efficacy of AI systems
  • Adjusting existing thresholds for Ranked Play – aggressive targeting of suspicious accounts
  • Accelerating Replay Investigations to review suspicious players

While these updates are a step in the right direction, GamerDoc provided his insights, particularly for those who may not be experts in software and anti-cheat systems. He emphasized that the core issue with Ricochet lies in its over-reliance on artificial intelligence, which he believes distracts from addressing the real problem: the cheats themselves.

According to GamerDoc, the current design of Ricochet is not optimal because it focuses too much on identifying suspicious behaviors, rather than targeting the cheats directly. He argues that if Ricochet were designed to operate at the kernel-level—the core of the operating system—it would be much more effective at detecting cheats running locally on players’ computers. He says, “The tools are there, and it’s a matter of deploying them effectively.”

Additionally, he finds it concerning that console players are being forced into an unsafe competitive environment. He points out that if crossplay is mandatory, enforcing certain Windows security features, similar to those on Xbox or PlayStation, could help create a more fair and balanced playing field for those who care about competitive integrity.

He concluded by stating that while no one expects cheating to be completely eliminated—since that’s an unrealistic goal—when cheating becomes so prevalent that it severely impacts top players and the competitive ecosystem, it indicates that the current approach may need to be reconsidered.

In related news, Riot Games have recently launched a rewards campaign, offering prizes of up to $100,000 for players who manage to find flaws in the official anti-cheat systems of League of Legends and Valorant.

Sea of Thieves Update 1.358.227 Released This November 28

Rare has released yet another update for Sea of Thieves on all platforms. On consoles this is update version 1.358.227. Check out more details down below.

Known Issues in Sea of Thieves?

Rare has not posted any official patch notes for this update yet, but the Reddit community pointed out some known issues. Check out what they had to say below.

Pink_of_Floyd posted:

Anybody else getting the Xbox server error repeatedly (PC)?

Here’s what me and my friend did:

Restarted the router Uninstalled-reinstalled the game Restarted the computer Signed out-in to my Xbox account

My friend has no trouble logging in at all, and the servers reported that they were fine. I have been getting the Xbox server error message for a couple days with no sign of any changes. Is anyone else here getting this problem or is it just me? I also would like ideas on how to fix it if possible.

drivewaypebbles posted:

Why does my vc just randomly decide not to work?

I’ve been playing SoT for a few weeks now and while playing with others my audio will randomly stop between sessions. I don’t change any settings or anything between so I don’t understand why it just stops working. I play with the same people everytime. Everyone can hear me but I can’t hear any of them. Does anyone else have this issue?

We will update this post as soon as possible if Rare posts official details on this patch.

NCSoft has released Throne and Liberty’s patch 1.8.4 on consoles and PC this November 28, and this brings a short list of fixes, with some aimed at Castle Siege bugs. This patch is accompanied by server downtime, so if you can’t log in to the servers or having connection issues, it’s due to that.

Throne and Liberty Update 26.100.811 Released During Server Downtime This November 28

Server downtime has started on Nov. 27 at 10:30 pm PT/Nov. 28 at 1:30 am ET/2:30 pm HKT, and will last for 3.5 hours.

General

  • Arch Bosses: Fixed an issue that caused the Queen Bellandir and Tevent events to not drop their expected loot items.
  • Dynamic Events: Fixed an issue preventing the Fire Festival and the Lift the Moonlight Spell events from starting properly.
  • Dominion: Dark Destroyers: Fixed the Dominion portals not spawning properly for this event.
  • Controllers: Fixed the Enter Game screen opening legal text when attempting to use the Enter Game button.

  • Adjusted the geometry of Stonegard Castle to prevent unintended early access to the inner courtyard by traveling atop the western walls.

  • Fixed an issue preventing capture of Pillage Stones.

If you haven’t logged in recently, NCSoft has pushed out a free content drop with the addition of Two Star Dungeons last week.

Throne and Liberty is out now as a free-to-play game, and I suggest you read on our review where we state, “Throne and Liberty is off to a strong start, especially with a price of free. The campaign may be derivative, but it does serve as a great intro for the game’s various systems,” to know more about it.

Path of Exile Update 3.09 Released, as Servers Restart on All Platforms

Grinding Gear Games is restarting the servers for Path of Exiles on all platforms, and this is to release a new patch for the free-to-play dungeon crawler. Note that this is a super short server downtime, and estimated to take just 10-15 minutes. The patch itself is a minor one tagged as 3.25.3b, which console gamers will see as Path of Exile update 3.09 (update version 1.010 on PS5/XSX).

Path of Exile’s Latest Update Fixes Friends List Removal Bug

Here’s what’s new per GGG:

  • Fixed a bug which could prevent removing some accounts from your friend list.
  • Fixed a bug where the Iron Count’s Zweihander microtransaction from the Lord of Ogham Early Access Supporter Pack could not propagate to off-hand.

Of course, with Path of Exile 2’s early access available next month (at a cost), and the full release once again being free-to-play, the first game’s days are numbered.

Expect Path of Exile 2 to feature a brand new campaign with six acts, 100 distinct environments, 600 monsters, 100 bosses, and of course, a ton of loot.  Here’s a summary of some of the new stuff to expect from the long-awaited sequel:

Twelve Character Classes

  • Path of Exile 2 features twelve character classes, two for every combination of Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence. While each of the class variants focuses on a different playstyle, they’re just a starting point. You can combine skills from many classes together to create your ideal character build.

New Skill Gem System

  • Path of Exile 2 features 240 Skill Gems that grant devastating active skills and 200 Support Gems that modify their behaviour. Combine these together to create your perfect build.
  • This is the next generation of Path of Exile’s famous skill system. Support Gems are now socketed directly into Skill Gems, removing many of the frustrations present in the old system while maintaining all the previous depth. It’s now possible to six-link every skill your character uses.

Dual-specialise your Passive Skill Tree

  • Path of Exile’s iconic Passive Skill Tree has made a return, with 1,500 skills that allow you to completely customise your gameplay experience. It now features Dual Specialisation, the ability to allocate some passive skill points to two different sets of skills. They engage whenever the appropriate weapon or skill type is used. For example, you can have some points allocated to both daggers and traps, or ice and lightning, and as you swap between attacks, the appropriate skill points will apply. This lets you specialise in multiple areas without opportunity cost.

Uncover All-new Items

  • Path of Exile 2 features 700 equipment base types and every single one has its own unique item you can find. You can augment your arsenal with new weapons such as Spears, Crossbows and Flails, as well as supplementary items like Focuses, Traps and redesigned Sceptres.

Encounter Unique Bosses

  • In Path of Exile 2, every area of the Campaign contains a boss encounter. There’s over a hundred bosses to fight as you make your way through the Acts and they all have unique mechanics to learn.

Explore a New Endgame

  • Completing the campaign is just the beginning. The endgame in Path of Exile 2 includes countless areas in different biomes, powerful crafting, challenging bosses, unique encounters and much more. Unlock new paths and explore further into the world.
  • As you progress through the endgame, you will gain access to special passive trees that can boost the rewards of your maps and change the way the various endgame mechanics work. These trees will make your maps more rewarding but also more difficult.
  • Path of Exile 2 introduces sequels to several leagues from Path of Exile. While their mechanics are familiar, the monsters, bosses, rewards and progression are all new.

Fair-To-Play. Never Pay-To-Win.

    • bof Exile 2 is a separate game to the original Path of Exile. We will continue to offer expansions for both games going forward. They are completely free-to-play and will never be “pay to win”. Purchases are shared between the two games.

We’ll be covering more Path of Exile 2 once it’s out, so stay tuned.

Bloober’s Cronos: The New Dawn Combat Will Lean Towards Resident Evil & Dead Space; Will Feature a Special Mechanic to Spice Things Up

While Bloober Team unveiled its new horror game, Cronos: The New Dawn, last month, it didn’t exactly give us an in-depth look at the gameplay, as the reveal mostly focused on building the atmosphere and its theme more than anything else. As it turns out, players who dig the combat in the Resident Evil and Dead Space games will find the combat in Cronos to their liking.

Speaking to MP1st in an exclusive interview, Cronos: The New Dawn’s Game Director, Wojciech Piejko, confirmed to us that the upcoming horror game’s combat will “lean” towards Resident Evil and Dead Space. Not only that, but Bloober will implement a combat mechanic that will “spice” things up, though refrained from stating just what it is exactly. Piejko gave Dead Space’s limb-cutting, and Alan Wake 2’s flashlight-on-enemies combat mechanics as examples of what they’re going for.

Bloober Team’s New Horror Game Cronos Will Have a Combat Mechanic Comparable to Dead Space’s Limb Dismemberment, Alan Wake 2’s Flashlight

MP1st: Often, I’ll play survival horror games with the avoidance of using guns because I feel they can come off as more of a distraction and work better when as a last resort thing. I think that’s sort of a common belief that having a gun sort of lessens the scariness of a game because of the safe distance and power they give a player, though there are some examples out (Dead Space) that prove otherwise. What are the team’s thoughts about guns in survival horror, and how are they approaching them with Cronos?

Piejko: I totally agree that it’s easier to get scared while feeling vulnerable because of a lack of means to deal with monsters but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible – the game “just” needs a different design. You need to know how to control the tension and understand that when the monsters appear on the screen and the combat starts, the player feels relief. The player no longer thinks about what is lurking in the shadows, and the survival instinct takes over. The key to success in this case is to create a great atmosphere and build-ups before combat encounters, or even trick the player into thinking that they will be attacked and not do it. Example scenario: Imagine you are looking for a key. You enter a new area and hear the rhythmic sound of something hitting the wall. Finally, you see a monster banging its head against the wall. It doesn’t see you; you have already fought this type of monster, and it’s strong and challenging, so you sneak behind its back. You search the rooms and find the key—now it’s time to go back and pass the monster again. On your way back, you hear the banging again, but it suddenly stops. You check the corridor, and the monster is gone. Where is it? Will it jump out at you from another room? It’s only an example but games with combat may also be really scary if you play your cards right.

Overall, combat in Cronos is leaning towards RE and Dead Space areas but we are still storytellers at heart, so please also expect a strong emphasis on story and atmospheric exploration. The Traveler relies on suit, weapons and abilities, but is still very vulnerable to the monstrosities lurking in the ruins of an old world. You will be outnumbered, and you need to be careful to stay alive. Resources are limited and the monsters hit hard. We’ve also prepared something special to spice up and increase the tension of combat. I can’t reveal much right now but in Dead Space you need to cut-off Necromorphs limbs, in Alan Wake you need to use a flashlight on enemies, and in Cronos you will need to.. wait to see it ;]

While Bloober won’t say what this combat mechanic is, it should help in keeping things fresh, instead of just pointing your gun at enemies and shooting them like your standard third-person shooter.

Cronos: The New Dawn is due for release sometime in 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned to our interview with Bloober where we talk about Cronos and even Silent Hill 2.

Sniper Elite Resistance Hands-On – Holding the Fort

Sniper Elite Resistance is set to be released in a few short months, though we’ve managed to get our hands on a very early preview build, sneaking around, punching Nazis, and blowing up heads. Our early impressions talk about our experience with the shooter, and what we can expect come release.

For the Resistance

In Sniper Elite Resistance, you play as Harry Hawker, a British operative, who many fans will recognize as the optional partner in past games. This time, though, he’s taking the centerpiece in his own adventure, as longtime protagonist Karl Fairburne is out handling other business (That business is Sniper Elite 5). Though we still don’t know much about Harry, we do know that the story of Sniper Elite Resistance takes place in 1940s France and will be focused on the resistance forces in the area during World War II. You’ll be tasked with finding intel about Hitler’s new Wunderwaffe (wonder weapon) and its whereabouts so that you can destroy it and help bring an end to this war.

While our hands-on didn’t see us explore much of the story, it seems like a perfect setting for the franchise, as often, many WWII games are focused on the significant battles that many are more versed in. Fighting alongside the resistance group will undoubtedly bring in some unique story opportunities that we’ve yet to see told in a video game, and based on the small interactions we’ve seen so far, I think Sniper Elite Resistance will bring much to the table on the storefront. However, that’s never really been the big thing with the series, as many, including myself, fell in love with the franchise the first moment we started playing around in its grand and gorgeous sandbox world.

Stalker in the Night

Watching the gameplay, it would be easy to mistake Sniper Elite Resistance for Sniper Elite 5. Fans have shared this sentiment ever since the reveal, and after playing it myself, I agree, as much of Sniper Elite 5 has been carried over into Resistance.

That’s not to say that’s a bad thing, as I’m quite fond of Sniper Elite 5, and have always said that not every new iteration in whichever series needs to be some genre mover or massive innovation from the previous entry. Sniper Elite has done a ton of that already through the years. Fans also know that sense of familiarity, as the series is set during World War II, an era from which many other titles have shifted away due to the general view of it being “overdone.” Not for Rebellion Studios, though, as they’ve repeatedly proven with the Sniper Elite franchise that the era has plenty to give.

That, in part, is thanks to the game’s sandbox mechanics, where you’re given an objective but complete freedom over how you get and do that objective. In our demo, played via streaming, we started things off on the third main campaign mission. Our objective? Secure highly confidential intel located inside of Hotel Terminus. Though the game allows you to play any style you want, I decided to go with the stealthier approach because this was a nighttime mission. So, I made my way through the cold trainyard into the more tightly spaced city as German forces patrolled around.

Using cover, such as a wooden box and even tall grass, I snuck around, avoiding any potential encounters. However, that didn’t last for long, primarily due to my poor latency during my stream, so I had to start taking a more direct approach. I stealthily (whistling helps) took down any enemies I could and sniped out others with my long-range rifle. That prompted the X-ray kill cam, and no matter how many times I’ve seen it before in past iterations, it remained just as satisfying here. Seeing my bullet wiz past so many structures in slow-motion, only to come in contact with the skull of my enemy, and seeing it slowly dig its way through, shattering bones and ripping through flesh and brains. It’s a gory sight, but it’s the kind of sight that you don’t want to look away from and can’t help but smile with amusement.

But seeing that this was a streamed demo and in a very short time, I eventually had to rush through things. I don’t want that to really be indicative of the core experience, as you’ll have unlimited time to do things. But this meant that I was constantly tripping alarms and alerting enemies of my presence throughout the demo. Still, this allowed me to check the AI out a bit more, and I do have to say they do feel like an improvement over Sniper Elite 5. They aren’t perfect, but they can be pretty brutal and have far better patterns than I witnessed during my gameplay. Thankfully, the level’s design was loaded with interiors and pathways to help evade enemies, allowing me to return to sneaking around.

Brutality!

In many ways, it’s very Hitman-like, where you want to plan your approach, execute it, and then get away. But like Hitman, not everything goes your way, and you’ll often adapt on the go. That can create tense moments, such as taking out a guard only to see two other guards slowly approaching. You have to decide: do you have time to pick up the body and stash it away somewhere hidden without being seen? Or do you risk them finding the body as you make your escape elsewhere and away from the area, leaving them confused? It’s the kind of heart-pounding reaction I like feeling, which has always come in plenty in the Sniper Elite series.

It’s fun, brutal, and gory, just how I like my Sniper Elite games, and though there are familiar threads with Resistance, I enjoyed the small slice of gameplay I got to try out during this session. Again, Sniper Elite Resistance isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel by any means that likely will be reserved for the next numbered title. But for those who enjoyed what Sniper Elite 5 had to offer, I think Sniper Elite Resistance will be right up your alley. This is just based on the solo-campaign mission, as the full game will feature cooperative play, as well as online PvP, so while it may sound like a DLC, make no mistake, Sniper Elite Resistance is shaping up to be quite the package when it releases next year.

Sniper Elite Resistance is set for release this January 30, and you can check out the pre-order bonuses, roadmap and more here.

DayZ Frostline DLC Gets Review Bombed for Price and Content; Dev Says “No One is Forcing Players to Buy It”

The DayZ Frostline DLC came out in October and costs $26.99. It’s a paid DLC for the popular zombie multiplayer game. However, many players on Steam think it’s overpriced for what it provides.

Based on recent reviews on Steam, the DLC has received only 23% positive feedback, resulting in a ‘mixed’ overall rating. This clearly shows that the expansion has not been well received by many players.

One user wrote a particularly critical review, saying, “Sakhal does have SOME neat stuff to it, but it is absolutely NOT worth it’s asking price as of right now. Maybe in time they’ll add more interesting features to the map to justify it’s existence, but right now you can get much better maps for free and Bohemia knows it. If you really want a frozen hellhole experience, play Namalsk. But if you play DayZ on PC i’m sure you already have.”

However, the head of Bohemia Interactive, Marek Spanel, disagrees with this criticism. In a post on X/Twitter, Spanel pointed out that, over the past decade, DayZ players have spent an average of 30 USD and played for about 188 hours each. He explained that, despite this, Bohemia Interactive has received less than 10 cents for every hour of gameplay. He emphasized that this figure includes the costs for hosting the game’s online infrastructure and providing regular updates.

“Yet DayZ Frostline is currently being review-bombed on the same platform for being too expensive: $26.99 for ‘just a map,’ and some users demand ‘gimme more for less money,’” Spanel wrote. “No one is forcing players to buy DayZ Frostline. The base game is still available to all users.”

The official DayZ account was a bit more diplomatic, quoting Spanel’s original post and adding, “The DayZ dev team continues working hard to pack in more awesome content with each update. We also don’t forget about our amazing modding community – and yes, they’ve got tons of free maps that’ll keep you busy if you are not ready to join people on frosty Sakhal just yet!”
