Lords of the Fallen Update 1.030 Drops for Hotfix 477 This Feb. 2

Following yesterday’s patch 1.1.474 for Lords of the Fallen, HexWorks has now deployed another patch today! Lords of the Fallen update 1.030 is now live, and this is called hotfix 477 by the studio. Read on for what got fixed this time.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.030 Patch Notes | LOTF Hotfix 477 Patch Notes:

Hotfix v.1.1.477
  • Fixed an animation issue that caused the player character to shake repeatedly while carrying Grand Swords on-handed.

Yep, that’s about it. I mean, this is a hotfix after all. In case you haven’t turned on the game and just downloaded today’s patch (which lumped in yesterday’s big title update), you can check the highlights below on what’s new.

  • Gamepad Rebinding – Full cross-platform gamepad rebinding options have been implemented, accessed within the settings menu, enabling you to have full control of how you traverse through the Mournstead.
  • Backup Saves – With this brand new system in place, the game automatically saves the game to three designated slots during your playthrough, cycling through them as you progress. As a result, should you encounter a corrupted save, the game automatically reverts back to a healthy save slot, so no player action is needed.
  • Optimization Pass – As always we’ve focused our attention on optimizing the game; in this update, we’ve focused on player character animations, damage feedback and level streaming.
  • Xbox HUD – Fixed an issue that caused the game HUD to be place incorrectly too close to the center.

For the rest of the notes, head on over here.

Phantom Abyss Review – Ghosts of the Past Runs

Phantom Abyss is a run for your lives, Indiana Jones meets Pitfall game where speed and thrills trump careful movement. It’s the antithesis of something like Meet Your Maker, where each step may result in instant death, while in the case of Devolver Digital’s new release, going fast is almost as appealing as learning the layouts of the procedurally generated temples, even if this may sound somewhat incongruous. It’s also a multiplayer game with roguelike elements where you don’t play with others, but with their ghosts in asynchronous runs that encourage you to use them as ethereal guinea pigs for your success.

Temple Run

After more than two years in Early Access, Phantom Abyss is getting its official release on January 25, adding a few game modes into the mix. You can run straight into Adventure mode to experience what can be seen as the main campaign of the game, test your skills in the challenging and randomly-generated Abyss Mode, or go for the Daily Mode in case you want to try a new trial each day and boast your name on the leaderboards.

Phantom Abyss Review

Phantom Abyss has a very focused and streamlined approach to its core loop. Players raid temples and try to reach the exit, picking up gold coins and a relic on their path. You may see a few ghosts of other players, ghostly figures of past adventurers who have succumbed to the pitfalls of these dark and treacherous ruins. Clever players will start their runs by taking a careful approach, watching one or more of these ghosts closely, as they go on about their exploration and lead the way, pausing before every deadly trap and successfully reaching the other floors, getting closer to the coveted relic.

But that’s in theory, because these ghosts are the recorded runs of players who are now trapped inside a dungeon, forever famed as failures with their names highlighted for better mocking, a fate that you are likely to suffer as well, many, many times. That’s the beauty of the asynchronous multiplayer system in Phantom Abyss, as you play alongside others that just happen to not be there anymore. Use their failures for your success, stopping short of committing the same mistake that got them killed in the first place, or someone, somewhere, might end up laughing back at you. A code allows you to share dungeons with friends, putting them through the same hazardous layouts to see who gets to be the best temple raider.

Phantom Abyss caters for different types of gameplay, depending on how you wish to tackle each challenge. You can thread carefully, watching the ghosts and peeking around every corner, or running and jumping like you’re playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game. Naturally, when you are spotted by a guardian that will relentlessly chase you, there’s not really much time to stop and think, so it’s all down to the spur of the moment.

Whipping It

Phantom Abyss Review

Exploration is fairly forgiving, with physics that give you some room to breathe and margin for error, especially while using the whip, one of several you can unlock and select. However, the hitbox size of some traps is hard to calculate, with a certain feeling that we didn’t really touch it but there was damage anyway. The whip can be used to take out some enemy contraptions, but mostly it serves as a tool for navigation, to reach places in front and above you with ease. It doesn’t always work well, and playing with a controller requires a little bit of fiddling to select that sweet spot, but it’s a fun and useful gadget. With permanent upgrades for whip length and speed, it gets even more appealing to use.

Whips are different in shape and functionality, with unique perks tied to each one. You may enjoy a few of them more than others, with double jump ability or being immune to fall damage being propositions that are hard to ignore. Dying makes the player lose its equipped whip, leaving it at the grasp of other players who are going into the same dungeon.

Each run comes with default requirements, forcing you to use this or that whip, for example, and throws a couple of challenges your way. If you’re feeling confident, you can always add a few more challenges to increase the rewards, but the task difficulty will be rampant and the odds of you turning into one more ethereal figure are higher.

Phantom Abyss Review

Some of the guardians that chase you right from the very first levels come with a pending sense of doom. However, there’s an odd relativity to their difficulty, perhaps unintentional, as the Eye of Agony that shoots the heat ray is easy to avoid, but the Masked Defiler is another case entirely, spitting four poisonous gas bombs at very short intervals, with the range of the gas being on the unforgiving and frustrating side – in other words, it’s not always easy to see if you are getting into the damage zone or not.

There were some occasions where a weird bug reared its ugly head upon dying, with a softlock on a dialogue halting progress as the player returns to the hub, forcing me to exit it.

Raid Fatigue

Phantom Abyss remains fun for a while, a challenging adventure that is as much multiplayer as playing TrackMania with its characteristic ghost cars is, an acknowledged choice that nonetheless makes the game infinitely more interesting than if it were a fully solo-driven experience. But at a certain point, after several runs, it finally hits you – temple running is quite repetitive, the overall functionality of the traps isn’t that diverse, and the excitement is vanishing. That’s the actual curse of the game, a core loop that needs you to realize that short sessions are the best way to go about it. Play it if you like old-school trials and to challenge yourself, but don’t expect to find the holy grail of parkour gaming here.

Score: 7/10

Pros:

  • Fast and frenzied parkour gameplay Indiana Jones style
  • The ghosts are a good element to have
  • Randomized layouts shake up the challenges

Cons:

  • Gameplay becomes repetitive after a short while
  • A few balance issues and bugs

The Last of Us Part 3 Is All But Confirmed; Has a Concept Already

With the release of The Last of Us Part 2 Grounded II documentary today, the team at Naughty Dog has given fans an in-depth look at the making of the game. Tons of new details about the game were revealed, but it was towards the end that series’ co-creator Neil Druckmann essentially confirmed The Last of Us Part 3.

The Last of Us Part 3 “Officially Announced”

To wrap up the documentary, Neil Druckmann spoke briefly about the future of the series. While he doesn’t downright say they’re developing a third game, he did confirm that he finally has a concept idea for a third one, and says he feels it will probably happen. Here’s the full quote of him talking about it.

“I did some other interview where someone asked me… about The Last of Us, and would there be any more stories or something. I mentioned we have written a story that takes place after Last of Us II that stars Tommy. I hope one day we get to make it. The headlines across the industry were like, “Naughty Dog has outlined The Last of Us Part III.” And that’s actually wrong. It was always a small story, it was never a full title.

At the time, we had higher priorities at Naughty Dog, to fix our pipeline, to fix work-life balance issues. Just based on where we were, I didn’t wanna prioritize this story, so that story was shelved.

I still believe one day it will see the light of day. I don’t know if it’ll be a game or a show… TBD. The first game had such a clean concept of…the unconditional love a parent feels for their child. The second one, once we landed on this idea of…the pursuit of justice at any cost, justice for the ones you love, it felt like there’s a clean concept here and there’s a through-line from the first game about love. If we never get to do it again, this is a fine ending point.

The last bite of the apple, the story’s done. The great thing about working at Naughty Dog is that we don’t have to. It’s always like, we would love another Last of Us, but if you guys are passionate about something else, we’ll support this other thing. Very privileged position to be in. I never take that for granted.

I’ve been thinking about, “Is there a concept there?” And for now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently that’s changed. I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept, that, to me, is as exciting as Part I, as exciting as Part II, is its own thing, yet has this through-line for all 3. So it does feel like… there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

Of course, we don’t expect an official announcement to happen in the documentary with a teaser and all, but this basically confirms that part three is something they believe will happen. It may not be for a long while, mind you, as it’s only in the concept stage, with the studio working on a new single-player game already

With that said, what are your hopes for the story of the next chapter of The Last of Us? Should we keep on following Ellie and Abby, or perhaps maybe focus on a new character that may eventually cross paths with the two?

Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Supermassive Games Founders Leave the Studio After 16 Years

Supermassive Games founders Pete and Joe Samuels are stepping down from the company after 16 years of operation. The news was announced on the studio’s official LinkedIn page today, and the co-founders also had a few words to say in parting.

The official Supermassive Games LinkedIn page shared the following post this morning:

The post thanks Pete and Joe for their work over more than 15 years of the company’s existence and wishes them luck on their next endeavors. Pete Samuels also had some heartfelt words to say regarding the founders’ decision to step down:

After over 15 years as CEO of Supermassive Games, I have taken the very difficult decision to step down from my role and leave the business.

My decision is entirely on health grounds and hasn’t been taken lightly. I am, and always will be, proud of what Joe Samuels and I founded all those years ago and filled with admiration for the Supermassive Team and the amazing things that they have achieved. I remain excited about their future under a talented new Leadership Team, led by Robert Henrysson, that will guide Supermassive through the next stage of its incredible journey.

I may be handing over the reins, but I’ll always be cheering from the sidelines.

As Pete stated in his farewell message, a new leadership team will head the company. This team will be led by Robert Henrysson, a current Chairman of Avalanche Studios. In a post of his own, Henrysson expressed an enthusiasm to take up the new role and stated that it would take up most of his professional time.

Pete and Joe Samuels helped to create a studio with a great reputation for cinematic interactive experiences. They saw breakout success with Until Dawn, but their studio as a whole has always poured their hearts into the projects they’ve put out. Hopefully, they’ll be able to continue a trend of compelling narrative games, especially as they branch out to make games for other franchies like Dead by Daylight.

Supermassive has plenty to look forward to in 2024. If you’re excited for their upcoming releases like Little Nightmares 3, let us know down in the comments. Speaking of Until Dawn, the game is being re-released later this year for the PS5, though it’s being handled by a different studio this time.

Players can expect The Ultimate Showdown with Lucilius to drop in “early March,” while the new playable characters will be out sometime in April. There’s also one update planned to drop in May, though its contents remain shrouded in mystery for now.

Of course, this content outline doesn’t include any patches designed for bug fixes and optiomization, and if we do get one from the studio, we’ll be sure to let our readers know about it.

In case you haven’t played the game, you might be surprised to know that it’s one heck of a banger. You can read our review here where we state, “Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a great JRPG, and even if you’ve never played Granblue Fantasy before, if you enjoy action JRPGs at all, you owe it to yourself to give this one a shot.”

It’s February, and that means it’s officially launch month for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth! Less than 30 days from its release, and with the State of Play centered around the game happening next week, players will have plenty to keep them over till launch. But before then, you may want to be sure you’re ready for it, including making sure you have space on your PS5. How much space, you ask? Well, a lot, as the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth download size has been revealed!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Download Size Takes a Slash at Your SSD

Immortals of Aveum Price Point Might Have Caused Lower Sales, Says Ascendant Studios CEO

In a recent interview with podcast Remap Radio, Ascendant Studios’ CEO Bret Robbins commented on the commercial failure of the studio’s recent magic FPS. According to him, the Immortals of Aveum price and release dates might have had a significant impact on the game’s sales and be responsible for its bombing.

In the interview, available on podcast services and Remap’s official website, Bret Robbins discussed Immortals’ difficult launch window and the lack of traction the game received across the gaming community. He had a few thoughts to share regarding what might have improved the game’s movement in the months immediately following its release:

Now the game is on sale, and sure enough, we’ve seen a huge uptick in sales because of the price. The price is interesting, there’s an argument to be made that we should’ve come out at a lower price point.

Robbins also argued that the game might have further benefited from a different release window. The game launched in between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield, two of the most heavily-discussed games of 2023. It was drowned out by the massive wake those games had following their releases. He preferred a January 2024 release, though he claimed that the studio wouldn’t have been able to hold off that long due to financials.

Immortals of Aveum did have a pretty unfortunate rap. While the game did garner a positive critical response (our own reviewer gave it a 6/10), it ultimately didn’t gain enough traction. Ascendant Studios suffered major layoffs just mere weeks after the game’s launch due to poor sales performance.

The gaming landscape feels borderline unhinged these days, with incredible highs and such abysmal lows arriving hand-in-hand every single week. Immortals of Aveum was unfortunate enough to hit the low end of the curve, and people’s jobs suffered for it.

Report: Hi-Fi Rush PS5 and Nintendo Switch Versions Confirmed via Datamine

Last month, a report claimed that a highly-rated Xbox exclusive that was released last year would be coming to more platforms.  At the time, it wasn’t known which title exactly, though many speculated the rumor was referring to Hi-Fi Rush, a title that Xbox shadow dropped out of nowhere and would even become the topic of Game of the Year for some. As it turns out, there may be some truth to that rumor and speculation after all, as new datamine seems to confirm it’s coming to more platforms.

Datamine Hints At Hi-Fi Rush Coming to More Platforms

Last week, Tango Gameworks released an update for Hi-Fi Rush that celebrated its first anniversary. It came with several fixes and some new features on the Steam version that even suspiciously saw support for the PS5’s DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers. But it also brought some new cosmetics central to today’s rumors posted on Reddit.

New anniversary shirts were added, and upon datamining, there appeared to be some yet-to-be-released ones hidden away in the game files. While the original Reddit thread has since been removed due to claims of being fake, The Verge’s Senior Editor Tom Warren took to X (formerly Twitter) to verify that the images are indeed in the game’s file with this update.

For context and how this indicates that Hi-Fi Rush is coming to the PS5 and Nintendo Switch, the anniversary shirts are platform-specific. Epic Game got one with “This is Simply Unreal Epic!” text and shares the same color as the storefront. The Steam version also has one with its color with the following text of “Be Positive* Overwhelmingly,” which references the review scoring hiFi Rush has on the platform. The Xbox’s shirt is green with “Shadow Drop” text, referencing the game’s launch.

Looking at the two unreleased shirts, it’s easy to see the connection, as blue is for PlayStation, and red is for the Nintendo Switch. “Rock out! Anywhere” obviously refers to the Switch’s portability of playing anywhere, whereas “I’m here, baby!” references the fact that an Xbox exclusive has made its way over to a PlayStation console.

Maybe it’s a stretch, but considering the currently available cosmetic shirts are all platform-specific, we’re leaning toward this rumor being one that ends up true. As for when an official announcement is coming, that’s anyone’s guess. There are talks in the rumor mill that a Nintendo Direct is happening this month, and if so, there’s a good chance we’ll see Hi-Fi Rush there.

Same as with any datamine, treat this with a grain of salt until debunked or confirmed by someone connected to the game officially.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.029 Pushed Out for v1.1.474 This Feb. 1; Includes Over 45 Tweaks

HexWorks has pushed out Lords of the Fallen update 1.029, and this is for patch v1.1.474! According to the devs, this includes over 45 tweaks and improvements, alongside community requested features too! Read on for the complete LOTF update 1.1.474 patch notes.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.029 Patch Notes | LOTF v1.1.474 Patch Notes:

In today’s update, we deliver a highly requested accessibility feature from our Content Roadmap*: Gamepad Rebinding. So whether you prefer your charged heavy attacks to be on L2/LT (or even Triangle/Y) instead of R2/RT, or demand dodge to be on X/A instead of Circle/B, the choice is now entirely yours. Alongside this, we are finally able to release something that we have been cooking in the background: Backup Saves! With this system in place, players can now rely on automatic backup save slots to protect from corrupted save data.

Please find today’s highlights below:

Now onto the full patch notes:

Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer that caused the Umbral platform to be pulled toward the host player if the co-op partner pulled near the Vestige of Blind Agatha.
  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer that could temporarily prevent the co-op partner from picking up Vigor after the enemy was killed within a close distance.
  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer that could cause a co-op partner to get stuck after teleportation to the host if the host was standing in a very narrow location at the moment of teleportation.
  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer that could cause the co-op partner not to see the host’s character after changing the realm from Umbral to Axiom.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a player’s health bar to update delayed when healing during an invasion.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from deleting the session password using the “Reset to default” option in the Multiplayer menu.

Collision

  • Fixed a collision issue that could cause players to get permanently stuck between Rhogar crystals near the Vestige of the Bloody Pilgrim.
  • Fixed a collision issue that could cause players to get stuck under the broken statue near the boss encounter with Judge Cleric, the Radiant Sentinel.
  • Fixed a collision issue that allowed players to access the Vestige of the Bloody Pilgrim without killing the Conflagrant Seer by jumping on the Rhogar crystals and skipping the fight.
  • Fixed a collision issue that could occur if players used the Umbral Lamp to traverse across an Umbral bridge at Pilgrims Perch. This issue allowed players to stand on an invisible platform in Axiom.
  • Fixed a collision issue that could cause the player camera to display an out-of-world location when entering the first cave in Depths.
  • Fixed a collision issue that allowed the player to look out of the world near Spurned Progeny boss arena.

Level Design

  • Fixed an issue that could cause enemies to not be able to traverse the environment near the first small hill in Penitent Path.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the water to kill players if only slightly touching in the Bellroom.
  • Added a new ladder in the Forsaken Fen for players who discovered the secondary mountain path.

Camera

  • Fixed a camera clipping issue that could occur when standing close to walls at the first soulflay tutorial.
  • Added an option to disable camera resetting horizontally when pressing the lock-on button.
  • Fixed a camera collision issue that could cause the player camera to clip through Rhogar crystals near the Vestige of the Bloody Pilgrim.

UI

  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from moving more than one rune at a time to the Coffer.
  • Fixed an issue that may cause the “Restart Game +0” to be available in the Vestige menu even though players had not completed the game.

Other

  • Fixed an issue that could cause Umbral Remnants to receive fall damage when dropping down to attack player in Umbral.
  • Fixed an audio issue that caused the Umbral ambient sound to be missing when quitting out to the main menu and loading back into the game.
  • Fixed a visual issue that caused the Ravenous Fascinator character model to have a stretched texture.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause players to get stuck when terminating the game during the credits with the Rhogar Ending.

That’s about it. Once a new one is released, we’ll let our readers know.

Apex Legends Update 1.000.059 Deployed for Changes This Feb. 1 (Update)

The Apex Legends update 1.000.059 download has been pushed out by Respawn this Feb. 1 on all platforms, and this is to bring in changes to the game. Read on for what this small download does to the game in the Apex Legends new update notes.

Apex Legends Update 1.000.059 Patch Notes | Apex Legends New Update Notes:

Update: Here’s what’s in today’s Apex Legends patch per Respawn:

Today’s @PlayApex patch includes a number of fixes, including:

⚾ The Final Ring will now close when playing Three Strikes matches on Storm Point
🚫 You can no longer chain cfg files via the +exec command during game time
🐀 Ash’s Common and Rare skins are once again available for players to use
🛡️ Wattson’s ult will no longer regenerate shields through walls
🌊 Water textures on Kings Canyon and World’s Edge will no longer flicker or look distorted on PS5
🏹 Loadouts in Control now give you the correct weapons

Here’s the latest announcement from Respawn regarding some of the changes they are bringing to the game:

Heads up, legends. We’ve been rolling out some changes to @PlayApex to better protect the game’s competitive integrity.

We are making changes to remove automated strafing on controller and will also be making changes to prevent the chaining of cfg files via the +exec command during game time. In other words, we are disabling the ability to use some configs that would allow for a greater range of movement than is usually possible within the game.

We want to be clear: the use of third-party tools, hardware, firmware, or software that automates game mechanics for a competitive edge over other Apex players is considered cheating and is unacceptable. As such, we will continue to evaluate potential exploits and take further action as needed.

In addition to that, we’ve listed the known issues for the game via the official Apex Legends Trello board, as some of these might have been fixed for today’s title update roll out.

INVESTIGATING:

  • [FFVII] Badge Reward screen does not display badge rewards
  • Playing at 165+ FPS may cause stuttering during some gameplay scenarios
  • Button prompts may not appear on summary/death screen, including report button – but buttons still work!
  • Legends may rotate when exiting a Trident

IN-PROGRESS:

  • [PS5] Crash when using Common or Rare skins with Ash
  • [Loba] Prestige Finisher “Enraged Claws” currently unavailable
  • Crashes referencing FS_CheckAsyncRequest when loading into a map
  • Hot Drops are currently unavailable
  • Gifting currently unavailable

Once Respawn releases more details about today’s title update, we’ll add it to the article.

Update: Official patch notes have been added.

Diablo IV Update 1.032 Drops for Version 1.3.1 This Feb. 1

Blizzard Entertainment has pushed out Diablo IV update 1.032 on consoles and PC this Feb. 1, and this is to bring the game to version 1.3.1. Players can expect changes to Season of the Construct, World Tier monsters and more. Read on for the Diablo IV new update notes provided by Blizzard.

Diablo IV Update 1.032 Patch Notes | Diablo IV Update 1.3.1 Patch Notes:

    • The field can be cancelled if the monster with the affix is Stunned, Frozen, Knocked Down, or Dazed.
  • We’ve adjusted the layout and monster spawns for several Dungeons. Smaller adjustments have also been made.
