Lords of the Fallen Review – Vigorous Souls

Lords of the Fallen originally released in 2014, as a pretty good Soulslike game. After a couple of false starts and even a change in developer, HexWorks has taken the helm and has been tasked with righting the course of its sequel, which became a reboot of the franchise. Our Lords of the Fallen review will tell you if all that shuffling around did more harm than good or if HexWorks might be onto something with their parallel worlds idea.

Some Rough Frames

First, it should be noted that Lords of the Fallen uses Unreal Engine 5. One of our staff was playing on the PS5, and it ran alarmingly slowly, as in single-digit frame rates during certain cutscenes. Playing for a few hours straight would also cause a slowdown in frames. Thankfully, this issue appears (well, mostly) to have been rectified by HexWorks with a recent patch. On PC, of course, performance will vary based on your system’s specifications, but on an Intel CPU with a GTX 1080, we could pull around 40 fps at 1080p+ resolution, with DLSS enabled, on high. Lords of the Fallen does look nice, with detailed character models and a fairly large world, which is actually twice as big as what the player sees, thanks to the novel Umbral concept (more on that in a bit). Overall, while this isn’t necessarily a showcase title, it does have a nice look to it, especially if dark worlds are your thing.

Lords of the Fallen has tropes that are standard fare for the Soulslike genre. You pick from one of several different classes, set some basic physical features, and set off on a difficult journey. The tutorial expects you to die in your first real fight so that it can introduce the game’s respawn mechanics. After this point, the game mostly leaves you alone to discover things on your own. Most enemies can kill you in just a few hits at the start, and learning how to block and parry becomes a crucial survival tool as the game progresses.

Traditional Combat

Combat in Lords of the Fallen will be familiar to vets of this genre. You can equip a weapon or defensive item in either hand and various other pieces of equipment, alongside clothes, which vary in weight and defensive properties. You have a handful of attacks at your disposal: a light and a heavy attack, the latter of which can be charged to deal more damage at the risk of being more exposed as you charge it up. Fights are tough but fair, though there is a bit of an overcommitment issue with performing an attack, as you cannot dodge away mid-animation if you see an incoming attack. For a game that’s seen as more accessible, Soulslike, being unable to cancel moves easily makes things more difficult than some players may be used to.

Multiplayer is available basically from the start and has features that are standard for the genre. You can be invaded at any time by another player, whose task is to try and kill you. If they succeed, you’ll die as normal with a chance to regain your lost vigor, while the invader leaves your world and earns themselves a nice reward. Co-op is also an option for those who may need a bit of help going through levels and bosses. Multiplayer is on by default, and disabling it may reduce the frustration new players might have in the early stages of their game. The setting is retained across play sessions, too, and cross-platform play is an option.

A Whole New World

By far, the most unique thing that Lords of the Fallen has going for it is the Umbral concept. In this universe, the world of the living is called Axiom. But there is a parallel world called Umbral that exists for the dead. What this means is that the entire game is always loading two separate maps. The player has an Umbral lamp, allowing them to peer into the other world. This lamp can also be used to draw the souls out of enemies, and attacks on the soul, while it is vulnerable, can deal a great amount of damage to the enemy and potentially stun them. Naturally, this ability can only be used after a cooldown period at first, using energy that is obtained mostly by defeating enemies. It’s also one more thing to consider while fighting – if an enemy’s health bar has a white border, they cannot be harmed unless and until a certain spirit in Umbral is destroyed.

Umbral is presented as a much more terrifying place than Axiom, with a soundtrack that is much more foreboding and ominous compared to the regular world as well. When players die, they fall to the ground and dissolve away, and are immediately reborn in the world of Umbral. While they have not lost their vigor yet, if they die in Umbral, they will drop any collected vigor and die for real. So, Umbral exists as a way to give the player two (more if you manage to surface out of it) lives without simply giving them a life counter. But the world of Umbral is a harsher one than Axiom. Any enemies you were fighting get knocked back due to your emergence in Umbral, which conveniently gives you time to decide if you’re going to stay and fight or flee and attempt to find a way out of Umbral. This represents the biggest risk and reward system in Lords of the Fallen. Umbral comes with a vigor multiplier, which starts at 1.1x. As you spend more time in Umbral, this number ticks up by the tenths. However, more enemies will spawn nearby, and when the multiplier reaches 2.0x, more challenging enemies will join in the hunt, and at 3.0x, survival is usually measured in seconds. This is a great concept and worth the price of admission for fans of the genre.

Nearly Got It

There are a couple of things holding back Lords of the Fallen from reaching the upper echelon of Soulslike games. First and perhaps most pressing, there are occasionally some bugs that can cause the player to get stuck if they are not careful. The world features checkpoints called Vestiges where, in true Soulslike form, the player can upgrade their character if they’ve collected enough vigor, the name for Lords of the Fallen’s experience points, or they can also opt to rest, where they are completely healed and have their healing item recharged. However, all enemies will also return to life. Intentionally not using some is a strategy to get through an area more quickly or to keep the vigor multiplier higher. However, an easily repeatable bug would have parts of the map not load once you ventured too far from your last-used Vestige, and on more than one occasion, I fell not to my death but to a lower part of the map that was otherwise inaccessible. I couldn’t die, as I was stuck in a small stone area, and with no enemies around, there was no way to leave except to either quit the game or use the item which returns you to your last-used Vestiage, sans vigor. In a game where death can mean a huge loss of progress, something as simple as loading the map while walking should work flawlessly every time.

Also, while trips to Umbra are short by design, it’s a shame the multiplier counts up so quickly (jumps from 2.00 to 3.00 in seconds), necessitating an exit from an interesting world for most players. Furthermore, the sense of urgency in Umbra also means most people will miss out on some of the more grandiose designs of Umbra, such as ladders or bridges made of bones or giant skeletons in the distance. Looking back at some of the screenshots I took in Umbra, I realized there was a lot more to the sights of the world of the dead than I remembered because I whizzed by it all on my frenetic escape out of there. Though, I suppose this means Hexworks managed to create an undead world you don’t want to hang around in, precisely what it sounded like they wanted.

Verdict

Just like the original that preceded it, Lords of the Fallen is a solid Soulslike game, which relies on a familiar game loop of dying repeatedly, learning from your mistakes along the way, while finding a nice track of enemies to slaughter endlessly as you slowly grind your character’s level up to meet the challenge, or for those more inclined to not cheese things, then memorizing enemy attack patterns as you fight and claw your way to victory. The Umbral mechanic has brought something new to the table, but it’s a shame visits to the other side are limited. Hexworks set a high bar for themselves, and while they didn’t quite reach the heights they were going for, they should be commended for what they have accomplished.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Satisfying, genre-standard combat
  • Umbral is an interesting place that acts as a second life
  • Familiar, rewarding core game loop

Cons:

  • Levels can occasionally take too long to load, resulting in collision issues.
  • Performance can swing wildly.
  • Uninterruptable attack animations

Insomniac Reveals How They Brought Their Version of Lizard to Life for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

We’re one week away from the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and to get fans even more excited, Insomniac has given a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at bringing one of the franchise’s most iconic villains to life, the Lizard.

One of the big surprises when Insomniac showcased Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay back in May was how vastly different the design of the Lizard was compared to his trench coat look from the comics. He was massive and looked far more menacing than the lizard we all knew, though the reception to the new design was overly positive, as he looked to be a worthy foe for the new Spider-Man game.

As it turns out, this design had much thought and research, as Insomniac detailed it all on the PlayStation Blog

“We looked at a lot of lizard skin for research,” Jacinda Chew, senior art director at Insomniac Game says. “The thing about lizards in real life–their skin’s actually really dry. Most people who looked at our Lizard kept initially saying ‘he’s not slimy enough.’ But I think it’s a nod to what people expect a lizard to look like–he’s got that lizard skin, but it’s actually much shinier than what you’d see on a real lizard

We gave him spikes, too. For design references, I tried to look at real-life lizards that looked a bit more prehistoric, because some lizards can look kind of soft and cute. I was looking at spikier, more snake-like, more aggressive references. We also wanted eyes that look more like animal eyes. If you look at cats, their pupils grow at night. We made those kinds of eyes for him–when light hits his eyes, they look smaller, his eyes are actually reacting to light. We did a lot of research on how to make that happen in real time on the PS5.”

Chew says that the team simulated the lizard’s skin and muscles, citing both animal and human movements. The Lizard’s skin shed, for example, has been simulated to see what they might look like with wind, and the process is described as an “impressive visual to behold.”

Looking at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Lizard, you can tell the studio put in a lot of work to not only stay true to the source material from the comics but also manage to deliver their spin on the character. We cannot wait to see him to his fullest once Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is released on PS5 this October 20.

Earth Defense Force 6 Invades North America on PS5 and PC in Spring 2024

It’s official! A North American Earth Defense Force 6 release is finally happening, and you can expect it to invade our (and Europe’s) shores sometime in Spring 2024.

D3Publisher announced today that Western fans of its highly popular third-person shooter, giant monster, and alien franchise, Earth Defence Force, can expect the sixth iteration to arrive in the Spring of 2024. Like the recently announced Asia release, fans can expect this version to be fully translated and dubbed when it releases next year.

Earth Defense Force 6 Key Features

  • The Next Chapter of EDF: Serving as a direct sequel to the events of Earth Defense Force 5, embark on a perilous adventure, unveiling an exciting new story within the EDF series.
  • Choose A Class: The return of the Ranger, Air Raider, Wing Diver, and Fencer classes armed with new abilities and equipment, empowering players to defend Earth effectively against emerging threats.
  • Fight for the Planet: Defend Earth and engage in intense battles against a wide range of deadly alien creatures and use cunning strategies to emerge victorious and protect the planet.
  • Missions Galore: Features an enormous amount of new content, including hundreds of new missions, weapons, and more for players to discover.
  • Battle with Friends: Players can also enjoy two-player co-op with split-screen or online co-op with up to four players, ensuring an exciting gameplay experience.

EDF6 will be released on the PS5 (and PS4) and PC (Steam), with an Epic Game version also planned for release afterward. You can learn more about the title from the official EDF6 website

I’m not sure how many EDF readers we have, but I am excited to see this finally happening after almost two years of being exclusive in Japan. The EDF franchise has been going strong for good reasons, as it offers countless hours of sheer, senseless fun. Plus, who doesn’t like the idea of fighting giant bugs and massive Godzilla-like creatures?

I hope to see you all on the battlefield next year, and remember — EDF!!! EDF!!! EDF!!! EDF!!!

FromSoftware has fired out Armored Core 6 update 1.04 (PS5 version 1.004), which brings bug fixes and stability improvements. Read on for what’s new in the AC6 patch notes for October 12.

Armored Core 6 Update 1.04 Patch Notes | AC6 Update 1.004 Patch Notes:

Improvements and Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that was preventing AC Data from being loaded when it was using a decal whose image had been deleted from the game server

*Note: now when loading such AC Data, the corresponding decal will be removed

  • Fixed a bug with FLAMETHROWER “WB-0000 BAD COOK” when equipped to the right hand, where firing the weapon while hovering with Tetrapod legs temporarily disabled effects and hit boxes
  • Fixed a bug with CORAL OSCILLATOR “IB-CO3W2: WLT 101” where charged attacks had less range when certain parts were equipped
  • Fixed a bug with CORAL RIFLE “IB-C03W1: WLT 011” where fully charged attacks would cancel if the attack button was held continuously
  • Mitigated issues where frame rate changes would affect the player AC’s firing accuracy and the rapid fire performance of some weapons
  • Fixed a bug where using a weapon immediately after switching to it with Weapon Bay caused attack animations and weapon animations to play incorrectly
  • Fixed a bug with online matches where an opponent AC would not render if decals were applied to it
  • Fixed a bug in the mission “Escape” where some events failed to trigger under certain circumstances
  • Fixed a bug in the mission “Ocean Crossing” where the player could get soft-locked under certain circumstances
  • Made corrections to the REPLAY MISSION tutorial text, which did not sufficiently explain the actual conditions for achieving an S-Rank rating

The text now reads as follows:

“To achieve an S-Rank rating, you must complete the mission without retrying from a checkpoint, while also destroying a large number of enemy targets and minimizing incoming damage, time taken, and ammunition consumed.”

  • Fixed a bug where the game would fail to load after selecting CONTINUE from the Title Screen under certain circumstances
  • Fixed a bug where the game would crash after changing parts in the ASSEMBLY menu during AC TEST
  • Other bug fixes and performance improvements

【Steam】

  • Changed Title Screen behavior so that control guide device settings do not change according to the device used to “PRESS ANY BUTTON”

In case you didn’t know, a server-side update was released last week that brought in balance adjustments, which you can read about here.

  • Flag Mode in Mode Lab Duration:
    • PDT/PST (UTC -7/-8): Wednesday, October 11, 2023 (End of Maintenance) – Wednesday, November 15, 2023 4:00 PM PST

    • If both teams are tied when time expires, an Overtime period is played where the first team to 10 points wins.
  • Two Flags will appear on the track, Red and Blue. Secure your team’s flag to get a bonus point!
  • Racers who are hit with items while holding a flag, or who crash into the environment, will drop their flag and be unable to pick it up again for 2 seconds.

      • Difficulty: ★
    • Hidden MeadowHidden Meadow KartRider Drift
      • Difficulty: ★★

Changes to Flag Mode

Flag Mode originally appeared in Season 3, and we’ve made a number of changes to make it even better!

  • Taking a flag to the opposing team’s flag zone will no longer score any points for either team, and instead return the flag to its original position.
  • Flags will always appear in the same location at the start of a race, but their position will change with each subsequent flag that spawns.
  • The interactions when colliding with a flag carrier has been changed:
    • A flag carrier colliding with an allied Racer will no longer drop the Flag.
    • A non-flag carrier colliding with an opposing flag carrier will move the flag into their possession, rather than causing the flag to drop.
    • When a flag carrier collides with another flag carrier, both Racers will drop their flags.
    • Added character animations for stealing a flag and having their flag stolen.
  • Added feedback when obtaining a flag:
    • When a flag is obtained, a notification is displayed in the HUD.
    • The size and transparency of a held flag has been adjusted.
    • Adjusted the sound effect played when a flag is obtained.
  • When a team reaches at least 15 points, an effect will be shown and the background music will change to warn both teams.
  • The number of flags that spawn during Overtime has been decreased.
  • The background music now changes when Overtime begins.
  • A Flag Mode-exclusive loading screen tip has been added.
  • The flag zone location guide on the HUD has been adjusted to match your team’s color.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Sales Shatter Records, Becoming Biggest Current-Gen Launch for Ubisoft

Just six days after its launch, Assassin’s Creed Mirage has already achieved the title of Ubisoft’s most successful current-gen launch in terms of unit sales. The publisher made this exciting announcement on their official Twitter, where they thanked the fans for their support and also shared some interesting stats.

  • Players have spend a total of 479 years parkouring the rooftops of Baghdad.
  • Over 60 million Leaps of Faith have been performed.
  • 2 million street cats have been pet.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage sales number shouldn’t surprise anyone because ever since the introduction of the new RPG formula with Assassin’s Creed Origins, fans of the franchise have been asking for a game that returns to its roots.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage successfully fulfills this long-awaited wish. Set in the reimagined 9th-century Baghdad, the game resurrects the beloved stealth-oriented gameplay that initially propelled the franchise to popularity.

Our review also praises the game, calling it a great return to form for the series that had sort of lost its way. You can read it in its entirety right here.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Update 2.0.2 Throws Out for October 11

Nintendo has pushed out Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet update 2.0.2, focusing on bug fixing. Read what’s new in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet patch notes for October 11.

Pokemon Scarlet Update 2.0.2 Patch Notes | Pokemon Violet Update 2.0.2 Patch Notes | Pokemon Scarlet & Violet New Update Patch Notes:

Bug Fixes

  • Under certain conditions, victories against the NPC Trainers scattered across the game world may not have been recorded. As a result, the rewards players could earn by winning a certain number of battles — such as from Pokémon League representatives in the Paldea region or Ogre Clan members in the land of Kitakami — were not obtainable. This bug has been fixed, so players who experienced this issue can now challenge affected NPC Trainers again to record their victories and subsequently receive any eligible rewards.
  • It was not previously possible to transfer certain special Pokémon to Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet via Pokémon HOME if those Pokémon were brought into Pokémon HOME from Pokémon GO, even if a Pokémon of the same species had already been obtained in Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet prior to version 1.3.2. This bug has been fixed, and the issue has been resolved.
  • Other select bug fixes have been implemented.

Nothing else besides that, though of course, this doesn’t mean there aren’t any hidden changes included with this patch. As always, we’ll be watchful for hidden changes, and will update the notes should any surface.

PS5 Cloud Streaming Comes to PlayStation Plus Premium This Month in Select Regions

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will soon enjoy the added benefit of PS5 cloud streaming, as it’s dropping later this month in select regions.

As announced on the official PlayStation Blog, PS5 cloud streaming will begin rolling out to Premium members starting this month. The available titles will range from some of the biggest PS5 hits, PS5 game trials, and even support for some games you already own.

  • Top PS5 hits from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog*, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, and Saints Row IV.
  • Game Trials* for PS5 games, such as Hogwarts Legacy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and The Calisto Protocol
  • Additional PS5 digital titles PlayStation Plus Premium members own that will be available for streaming, such as Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys, and Fortnite.

Optionally, these games can also be downloaded as part of the subscription for those who prefer playing on a local machine rather than streaming. The rollout schedule is as follows for the selected regions.

  • Japan – targeting October 17
  • Europe – targeting October 23
  • North America – targeting October 30

More regions are expected to be added in the future.

PS Plus Premium users will enjoy these additional features when streaming PS5 titles.

  • Downloadable content and in-game purchases will be available for PS5 game streaming, including DLC and add-ons – similar to purchases from downloadable games.
  • High quality resolution options**, including 4K, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p, with 60 FPS and SDR or HDR output.
  • Enhanced audio with support for all PS5 audio capabilities including 5.1 and 7.1 as well as Tempest 3D Audiotech.
  • Capture screenshots and record up to 3 minutes of video, which will be downloaded to your Media Gallery on PS5 and also available in the Media Gallery on PS App

Fantastic news, and we’re hoping this gets expanded to the mobile app to some capacity. It would be perfect for PlayStation Portal next month, though from what we understand, that is solely for local remote play.

Report: Microsoft Activision Deal Will Not Require Another Round of EU Approval

Microsoft has fought to acquire Call of Duty mega-company Activision Blizzard Inc. in a $69 billion deal since January of last year. Despite numerous ups and downs, it appears as though their fight may be nearly over. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Microsoft Activision deal will not require another round of EU approval before closing.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) originally blocked the Microsoft Activision deal back in April due to concerns over cloud gaming. After Microsoft changed the details of the deal to give Ubisoft full distribution rights of Activision games, the CMA approved the revised deal and lifted their block.

This morning, Bloomberg heard from several anonymous sources close to the issue that the European Commission has determined that the changes made to the deal won’t require another round of approvals. Considering that the deadline for the acquisition deal is October 18, this works hugely in Microsoft and Activision’s favor.

This is likely the end of the European roadblocks Microsoft has faced in its journey to acquire Activision Blizzard. As it stands, the FTC still plans to try challenging the deal in the near future, though they’ll be unable to start proceedings before the deal closes in just a week.

Are you glad to see that the circus surrounding the deal is nearly over? Do you think the deal is good or bad for the gaming industry? Let us know in the comments.

We’ll let our readers know when the acquisition has officially gone through.
