Black Myth Wukong Turned Profitable in First Day of Release, Has Earned More Than $450 Million Gross Revenue in First 3 Days

While Black Myth Wukong hasn’t been out for more than a week, the action game has already proven to be one of the top-selling games on Steam of all-time. Not only that, but apparently, the game has already turned a profit on its first day of release, too.

This was revealed by Niko Partners Director of Research & Insights Daniel Ahmad, where it was also mentioned that Black Myth Wukong has already earned more than $450 million in gross revenue over its first three days of release. For those unaware, gross revenue is the total amount of money a business generates from sales and other sources without considering any expenses. Even if that’s the case, that’s still very impressive.

Another bit that makes Black Myth Wukong even more appealing to Chinese gamers is that it’s priced at $38 locally versus the $60 it would cost in the US (for Steam). Of course, given the game is based on one of the most famous Chinese stories of all-time, it was going to sell out either way, but being able to buy it cheaper most definitely helped kick sales up a notch.

Wukong seems to be the breakout hit of the year, and just the other day, we reported on how PS5 consoles were selling out in China due to the game.

The latest press release from GameScience announced that Black Myth Wukong has already sold 10 million units worldwide, and managed to hit three million concurrent players across both PS5 and PC! Imagine if the title was already released the same day on Xbox? That would surely hike it up a bit more.

While our review of Black Myth Wukong on PS5 is still currently in process (hey! It’s a big game!), most reviews for the game have been favorable.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Warrior Class Combat Overview on Basics, Buffs, Ultimates and More Detailed

Even if it’s a weekend, that hasn’t stopped BioWare from releasing an in-depth look at combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. For today, we’re treated to a combat overview of the Warrior class and what it can do in engagements, and more.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Warrior Combat Overview:

By choosing Warrior, the fighting style revolves around close range combat and defense. Skills, Traits, Runes, and Abilities are customizable to best suit that type of playstyle. The loadout will have slots for Abilities, accessed from the Ability Wheel. Picking which Abilities from the many in the arsenal to bring into battle is a strategic choice made for each encounter, and they can be swapped out anytime, except during combat. For some added depth, there are up to three equipable Runes. Runes provide a variety of control, utility, or additional damage to synergize with your build. While in combat, all three Runes can be cycled through and activated.

Warrior Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Reaper – Become night’s blade. Steal life and risk death to gain incredible, unnatural abilities
  • Slayer – Leap into the fray. Wield massive, punishing weapons while rushing enemies to deal devastating blows.
  • Champion – Be the shield. Shrug off damage while summoning righteous fire down on enemies.

Rogue Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Duelist – Draw your steel. Parry and dodge past enemies to gain strength with every strike.
  • Saboteur – Set the stage. Deploy explosives and turrets that devastate enemies, then pick them off with arrows.
  • Veil Ranger – Hunt the enemy. Snipe enemies from afar using artifacts that charge arrows with dangerous, powerful magic.

Mage Rook Specialization Areas:

  • Death Caller – Embrace the dark. Drain life from enemies and cast spells that writhe with the essence of death itself
  • Evoker – Call the void. Freeze enemies in their tracks, then summon the deepest cold to tear them apart.
  • Spellblade – Be the storm. Channel potent spells for close-quarters combat infused with lightning’s wrath.

Combat Basics

Now let’s talk about the foundations of the combat system. The four core moves that all three classes share include jump, dodge, light attack, and heavy attack, which can all be chained together. Rook can dodge at any time, even mid-attack, which adds fluidity to the combat. Is taking damage or dealing it better at that moment? Light attacks do quick damage and build small amounts of stagger; heavier attacks are slower and build more stagger to your opponent. Once enough stagger is built, the enemy will be rendered more vulnerable to all incoming damage and allows Rook to perform a takedown.

Each of these attacks (light and heavy) can be charged by holding down the button to deliver a more potent version of the strike. For example, a heavy attack can be charged while using a staff to unleash a magical wave of destructive energy. Attacks can also be triggered while sprinting and/or jumping to add depth and fluidity to combat.

In addition, each class has ranged attacks, blocks (or parries, if timed properly with the right weapon set), and the ability to control Companions’ combat strategy. Each Class also has two distinct weapon sets, which can be swapped seamlessly in the heat of battle. This drastically changes the available move-sets and strategies.

Heavy attacks remove Armor Barrier (denoted by a yellow bar) faster, and ranged attacks remove Shield Barrier (denoted by a blue bar) faster. There is also the Stagger meter (denoted by a lavender bar) which builds as hits are landed against an enemy. Stagger creates opportunities for bonus damage and special Takedowns.

The Ability Wheel pauses the fight for more precise control over Rook’s own abilities and those of their Companions, and where those tactical RPG elements come into play. Players can use the Ability Wheel to assign Companions to attack specific enemies, individually or together. Abilities can also be bound shortcut keys to keep the action flow going, instead of always bringing up the Ability Wheel. Vulnerabilities and resistances of enemies can also be seen while targeting enemies in the Ability Wheel. For example, Darkspawn are weak to fire damage.

Buffs, Debuffs & Crowd Control

Some Abilities apply buffs or debuffs to help you in the fight. For example, Davrin has the Heroic Strike Ability which applies the Overwhelmed debuff to enemies. This will increase the enemies’ Stagger and make it easier for Rook to perform a Takedown. There are also Area of Effect Abilities to help the party defeat large groups of enemies. Controlling the field of battle is a key consideration in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Players will need to consider which buffs/debuffs or crowd control Abilities will work best for each situation.

Abilities require Class Resources (Mana, Momentum & Rage) to be able to use. Each class primarily builds up their Class Resource by dealing damage with basic attacks. In addition, each class has a secondary way to build their Class Resource – Warriors build Rage by taking and dealing damage, Rogues build Momentum by dodging attacks and parrying successfully, and Mages regain Mana passively over time.

Warriors who go into battle with a sword-and-shield build, will have access to the Shield Throw Volley. By landing a Heavy Attack on a Shield Throw return, the shield will ricochet, taking out multiple enemies. This sequence can repeat up to three times, causing a devastating ring of damage around Rook. This attack works well against swarms as well as distant adversaries. Other ways to manage distant enemies lean into Companion abilities, such as Davrin’s Death from Above to send Assan, his griffon, to attack enemies. Warriors also have the Grappling Spear Ability to pull enemies close for an easier victory. With these tools, attacks can be chosen based on the type of enemy and the situation to dispatch foes in the most optimal way, especially on higher difficulties.

Primers, Detonators, & Ultimates

Many Abilities include some type of coordinating effect and serve as either a Primer or a Detonator that can result in devastating combo attacks when properly executed with the Companions. These Ability combos can be set up in the Ability Wheel.

Finally, you have your most powerful attack: Rook’s Class Ultimate Ability. Doing damage to enemies increases your Ultimate Meter. The Ultimate Meter won’t fully fill during smaller skirmishes, because they are designed to decimate a significant swath of the battlefield or the toughest bosses.

All of these options combine together to create a rich combat experience that is highly customizable. The entire Skill Tree is also fully refundable, and Skill Points can be redistributed. We encourage you to try out multiple builds, use different Abilities for each mission, and change up the Companions you bring into battle.

According to BioWare, we will be getting the same treatment for the other classes, so stay tuned for the combat overview on the Rogue and the Mage.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to release this Oct. 31 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and you can check out the pre-order bonus and different editions that will be available here.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Has “Replaced and Remapped” All Enemy Locations; Konami “Serious About Renewing Series”

For those that played the original Silent Hill 2 back in 2001, you might be wondering what the upcoming remake has to offer aside from updated visuals. Konami and developer Bloober Team have not only confirmed changes are in store for some of the game’s mechanics, but we know now that even all the enemies have been placed in new locations as well.

This was revealed by Silent Hill series Lead Producer Motoi Okamoto in the latest issue of PLAY magazine (issue 44) which had a special blowout on Silent Hill 2. According to Okamoto,  “As for the creatures, we have some minor updates. We have also replaced and remapped all the enemies from where they were placed in the original so everyone can have a fresh take on combat.”

In the same issue, Silent Hill long-time composer Akira Yamaoka talked about the music, and how “all of the tracks have been reworked from the ground up.” To add, there’s nine hours of music in the game in total, and Yamaoka states, “we want to make sure everyone has a fresh experience.”

If it looks like Bloober Team and Konami are pulling out all the stops in making sure the Silent Hill 2 remake is a sure-fire hit, it’s because Konami has a point to prove with it.

Okamoto says that they are aiming to prove to gamers that they (Konami) are capable of delivering a high-quality Silent Hill game, and how the company is serious about renewing the franchise. “We fully understand that Silent hill 2 holds a special place in many people’s hearts as being memorable and as a masterpiece” Okamoto-san also adds, “So by introducing the remake of this game as the very first major title, we wanted to [demonstrate] to all of our players, all the fans, that Konami is serious about {renewing} the series, and that we are capable of delivering a high-quality Silent Hill game.”

With what we’ve seen so far, Konami and Bloober Team seem to be on the right track. Aside from new enemy placements, players can expect new puzzles, a new dodge button and more areas to explore as well, which is something we summarized here.

Silent Hill 2 is set for release on PS5 and PC this October 8.

New Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris Rewards This Week August 23, 2024:

Earn enough reputation, and you’ll be able to claim a Trials Engram from Saint-14! This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the number of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Passages

Name Perk Cost
Passage of Persistence Reaching seven wins rewards the weekly Adept weapon. When you are not in a full fireteam, losses following a win remove the win from the card. Reaching seven wins without losing a match grants access to the Lighthouse. 1500 Glimmer

Passage of Mercy Forgives one loss per run. Forgives a second loss if you have not yet been flawless this week. 1500 Glimmer

Report: PS5 Stock Sells Out in China Following Black Myth: Wukong Launch

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is reportedly selling out rapidly across China, fueled by the successful release of Black Myth: Wukong. The highly anticipated action RPG, based on Chinese mythology, has caused a surge in demand for the console, with reports of widespread stock shortages.

According to Daniel Camilo, retailers at Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen are struggling to keep up with the demand. The console, which was once readily available, is now being sold at inflated prices by scalpers, with the price increasing from 2,000 yuan to as high as 4,000 yuan in some instances.

A local stall owner said (translated from Chinese to English via Google Translate:

Black Myth: Wukong fire up, the basic spot has been swept away, and now the whole Huaqiang North should not have PS5 spot, even if there is, the price you certainly can not afford.

Black Myth: Wukong has not only boosted PS5 sales but also achieved remarkable success across all platforms. In just three days, the game sold 10 million units and reached a peak of three million concurrent users.  Additionally, pre-orders for the game amounted to 4.5 million copies, generating over $210 million in sales.

Its popularity in China has significantly impacted the availability of PS5 consoles, leading to a rare instance of stock shortages in the country.

Black Myth: Wukong launched on August 20 for PlayStation 5 and PC, with the Xbox Series X|S launch temporarily postponed.

Black Myth Wukong Sales Hit 10 Million Units Sold in Just 3 Days From Release, Hits 3 Million Concurrent Users Across All Platforms

While it’s expected Black Myth Wukong would be a breakout game for China-based developer GameScience, I gather no one could have predicted this, as the Black Myth Wukong sales have already hit 10 million copies sold across all platforms in just three days!

The announcement was made by the official Black Myth Wukong Twitter account where the studio also revealed that the action game managed to amass three million concurrent players across PS5 and PC!

Just a few days ago, it was revealed that just based on pre-orders alone, the game has already managed to rack up 4.5 million units sold. Based on the initial Steam numbers that catapulted the game to break the single-player game record as the fastest to hit one million concurrent players which it managed to do in just an hour, this really shouldn’t be that surprising. What’s surprising is, even after over 230,000 user reviews on Steam, it’s still averaging a score of 10/10 or five stars.

Our review of Black Myth Wukong for the PS5 will be hitting the site in the coming future but in the meantime, let’s all be happy that a new AAA IP has garnered this much success. We here at MP1st give a hearty congratulations for the GameScience people.

No Marvel Rivals Beta “Planned for Now” According to NetEase

Following the super successful Marvel Rivals closed beta, one would assume that we’d get an open beta to really test the servers and whatnot, right? Well, we didn’t get any announcement like that at gamescom, and it seems we won’t be getting one at all, as the devs have confirmed that there is no Marvel Rivals beta (closed or open) “planned for now” as the studio is fully focused on gamescom.

This was revealed as part of the official Q&A conducted in the game’s official Discord channel (which you can watch in full here), though the devs didn’t exactly say there won’t be another beta until the game’s December release.

That said, I fully expect another beta to be available before launch. It’s not insider info or anything of the sort, but just common sense. NetEase will surely want to test the server capacity at (almost) full blast, and what better way to do it than with an open beta, right? That should also help with the game’s marketing and hype as well.

The question is: when? Chances are, it’ll happen before launch, and if I were to wager a guess, sometime in September or October would be the best timeframe for it, as the devs will then have enough time to make any changes before the December launch. Of course, if you’ve played the closed beta, you’ll know that the game is essentially feature-complete save a few stuff. Speaking of which, go read our closed beta review here to see why we’re super hyped to be playing the game again.

While we didn’t get another beta announcement at gamescom, we did get the game’s release date which is set for December 8, and alongside that, a good look at Captain America and the Winter Soldier in action as well.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Length “Around 16-18 Hours,” All Classic Endings From Original Confirmed, Various Changes Explained

Those looking forward to the remake of Silent Hill 2, we have some good news for you! Developer Bloober Team has confirmed that the Silent Hill 2 remake length to complete is around 16-18 hours long, and that number hikes up even more if you factor in the secrets and the game’s different endings.

This was confirmed by the horror game’s Creative Director and Lead Designer Mateusz Lenart over on Twitter in answering fans.

Lenart adds that for completionists, it will take 20 hours and that’s not even counting the game’s different endings, which he even hinted at with the emojis (no spoilers, please).

Speaking of endings, Lenart confirms that ALL the endings from the original are in the remake (if the emojis didn’t confirm it for you), which should please fans a lot.

In terms of changes to gameplay and design, Lenart talks about it as well, with one of the specifics being the game’s first save point, and how they changed its placement.

Here’s Lenart’s tweet in full regarding that topic:

The beginning of the game was especially important to us during production. We wanted to capture that unique atmosphere from the original and the symbolic feeling of stepping into another world. 🌫️

This is the place where, for the first time in the game, the player can save their progress. Using a well and a mysterious red square🟥in which James sees his reflection is one of those ideas that shows that Silent Hill 2 is a unique game. James reacts by saying, “Ugh! It’s like…someone’s…groping around my skull,” and as a player, you immediately feel uncertain about your actions. 😱

Now, for those who noticed the placement of the save point got changed, here’s Lenart’s explanation about it and why they changed it:

Lenart isn’t done there, as one fan points out a change in the remake they noticed to which Lenart explains how they need to make decisions between realism and fluidity.

If that’s not enough info for you, we have a round up of the new additions Bloober Team has made, which includes a dodge button, new puzzles and more! Head on over here for more info.

Silent Hill 2 is set to release this October 8, and you can check out the game’s different editions here in case you’re thinking of purchasing it.

Striking Distance Announces New Game “REDACTED” and It’s a Roguelike Dungeon Crawler Set in The Callisto Protocol Universe

While we’re not getting a sequel to The Callisto Protocol, that doesn’t mean the IP itself is dead, as another game set in its universe has been announced as Striking Distance Studios’s new game titled “Redacted.”

According to the press release, Redacted is a sci-fi roguelike dungeon crawler that’s set in The Callisto Protocol universe. It’s a vastly different game from The Callisto Protocol, and a lot smaller in scope as well. Check out the reveal trailer where we see gameplay of the upcoming title as well.

Here’s the info straight from the press release.

[REDACTED] takes you deep into Black Iron Prison, a high-tech correctional facility on Jupiter’s icy moon, Callisto. Inmates are infected and mutating, security systems are indiscriminate, and other survivors are trying to escape by any means necessary. And though you’re just a modest security guard with one job – make it to the last escape pod alive – you’ll have an arsenal of weapons, suits, skills, experiments, and more to help you get out of Black Iron Prison alive. This game is all about fighting, dying, dying again, dying some more, and adapting, taking the classic roguelike formula and cranking it to eleven. The greatest hits are all there, like unlimited replayability, strategic build metas, progression through death, powerful upgrades, and speed running challenges, and (just in case you missed it) dying. Don’t worry though, because we’ve thrown in a few new ideas to ensure each run hits a little different.

  • ACCESSIBLE ACTION: Black Iron Prison is your playground. Arm yourself with a mix of guns, melee weapons, skills, and upgrades. The game is intuitive to play, but mastering it is another story. Battle through waves of monstrosities to reach that last escape pod, feeling the rush of survival and the sting of every death.
  • RIVALS: Black Iron Prison’s infected inmates and monsters are bad enough, but it’s the other survivors trying to escape you need to watch out for. They are gunning for the last escape pod and can be a right pain in the *** as they throw unexpected challenges in your path or attempt to take you out head-on.
  • FIGHT YOUR LAST CORPSE: Let’s face it, you’re going to die. Don’t dwell on it. Instead, hunt down your last corpse and take it out to earn a high-tier experiment from your previous run. But don’t take the fight lightly. The corpse you battle will have the same weapons, upgrades, suit and experiments you had on your previous run – the stronger you were, the stronger it is.

Redacted is set for release this October 31 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

XDefiant Falls Out of Top 40 Most Played on PlayStation and Xbox for the First Time Since Launch

While we’re still a few weeks away from the start of XDefiant Season 2, Ubisoft San Francisco might want to cook up an in-game event or something, as for the first time since the game’s release in May, the free-to-play shooter has dropped from both the PlayStation and Xbox platforms’ top 40 most played games.

The data comes from TrueAchievements and TrueTrophies recent top 40 charts. Lording it over on the PlayStation front is Fortnite, with EA Sports FC 24 at the second spot, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Grand Theft Auto V and Roblox rounding out the top five. On Xbox, it’s the same five games included in the top five, with the placements in different order

This is a huge drop from XDefiant that saw over 11 million players log into the shooter in its first month of release, with Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot even stating that ut has “exceeded expectations.”

There is still the Rockafeller map set to roll out in Season 2, and once that’s over, Season 2 shouldn’t be far behind. Aside from the much-needed new content, the game is suffering from progression drought, as aside from gun camos, there is literally zero stuff to earn; no calling cards, no player emblems, no nothing unless you’ve paid for the Battle Pass.

The good news? Executive Producer Mark Rubin has confirmed that more devs are being added to the game, which should help not only squash the bugs, but hopefully, shore up the content as well. As for Season 2, a recent datamine has unearthed the faction and even weapons incoming for the shooter.

If you’ve yet to give XDefiant a try, go read our review to see if it’s worth allocating the disk space for.

It’s another year, and that means another new entry in your annual sports sim. EA has revealed that NHL 25 will be released this October 4 exclusively for current-gen platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X|S). Alongside that, some of the game’s new features have also been revealed, as well as the game’s cover athletes.

Before diving into the info, check out the reveal trailer where we see snippets of gameplay.

This year’s cover athletes are brothers Jack, Luke and Quinn Hughes. They are the first siblings to grace an EA Sports cover together. Aside from that, there’s also the all-new “Ice-Q gameplay intelligence system touted by EA,

Built on an all-new logic-driven animation system, ICE-Q responds to contextual events with unprecedented realism and is the foundation of Chel’s gameplay overhaul. Next-Gen Vision Control skating allows players to walk the blue line, square up to the puck carrier, stay locked on goal and much more. The empowered AI helps players execute authentic plays with a refreshed playbook that improves power plays and opens up the ice for better overall positioning and offensive opportunities. Plus, Reactive Actions utilizes a series of new animations to make skaters more responsive in critical situations, increasing their urgency, collision avoidance and reliability.

“The new ICE-Q gameplay system represents a foundational shift in how players will experience the game, with its deep intelligence giving them complete control of the ice,” said Mike Inglehart, Senior Game Design Director at EA Vancouver.” Hockey is built different, with NHL 25 delivering greater authenticity, bigger team rivalries and inspired by the sport’s next-generation superstars who continue to redefine the game.”

In terms of what’s new on the gameplay front, here’s what EA shared with us:

  • Skill based one-timers – Skill Based One-Timers enhance authentic gameplay and create unique moments. By reading the attacking zone and finding an open teammate, players are rewarded with the impact of a deadly one-timer, leading to heart-pumping scoring possibilities
  • New WOC Live Events structure
  • All-new Grudge Match System – Tracks the history of matchups between teams across all major online and offline modes and enhances the series with special X-Factors that are earned in previous matchups against rival teams
  • HUT Wildcard Mode
  • Simplified, single-path XP progression shared across HUT
  • Sapien Technology delivers a visual uplift to character likenesses

For those getting the Deluxe Edition, here’s what’s included:

DOOM Eternal Update 1.27 Sneaks Out This August 22

DOOM Eternal update 1.27 has been released by id Software today on last-gen consoles, while current-gen owners will be prompted to download version 1.011. This is a surprise update, and as such don’t expect much from it. There are mods coming to the PC version as well, which we’ll go more in depth about below.

DOOM Eternal Update 1.27 Patch Notes | DOOM Eternal Update Version 1.011:

Bethesda and id Software has not mentioned anything about today’s patch, but there was an update released for the PC version on Aug. 9, which is most likely the same patch we got today for consoles.

Update 6.66 Rev 3 Release Notes

  • This minor update removes the marketing email opt-in checkbox from the Bethesda.net account creation flow, Umbra logo on legal notices splash screen and other minor changes

That’s about it when it comes to changes. There is the DOOM Eternal PC mod released alongside the Rev 3 patch  preview which we’ve included below for reference.

Message from id Software:

We are so impressed with the DOOM Eternal community mods created without any official tools. They inspired us to release a public beta of idStudio for creators and an opt-in PC mod preview for players to easily browse and play mods. We can’t wait to see what this community does next!

PC Mod Preview

DOOM Eternal Update 6.66 Rev 3 adds the ability for PC Steam & (soon on) Microsoft Store community members to opt-in to DOOM Eternal: PC Mod Preview. This allows players to browse, download and play mods

You can read more about it in the mini FAQ.

When it comes to the franchise, DOOM: The Dark Ages has been announced this year and is headed to Xbox, PC and even the PS5 in 2025.
