Battlefield 2042 Update for Feb. 13 Nerfs VHX-D3, and Here’s Exactly What Got Changed

For those annoyed and think the VHX-D3 assault rifle in Battlefield 2042 is still overpowered after the nerf it got, you can lower the pitchforks, as DICE has listened. The Battlefield 2042 update for Feb. 13 on all platforms is out, and this is a server-side patch which means there is no download required for players. This patch’s sole purpose is to nerf the gun, and thankfully, we have the exact values to show you just what’s changing.

Battlefield 2042 Update for Feb. 13 Patch Notes:

Expected time when patch will take effect: 12:00 UTC/7 am EST/4 am PST/8 pm HKT

The only changelog from DICE is how the VHX-D3 is being nerfed. Yep, this gun is so overpowered that the studio had to release an entire patch just for it.

What Changes Are Being made to the BF2042 VHX-D3?

Standard Issue & Subsonic Ammo
▫️ 0-20M Damage Reduced to 22.
▫️ Can no longer 2 Headshot Kill.

High-Power Ammo
▫️ 0-4M Damage Reduced from 28 to 25.
▫️ 20-29M Damage Reduced from 24 to 22.
▫️ Can no longer 2 Headshot Kill.

ADS Dispersion
▫️ Increased dispersion by small amounts while Standing, Standing and Moving, and, Crouching and Moving.

Recoil
▫️ Recent changes to Horizontal Recoil have been rolled back (+10%)
▫️ Vertical Recoil will be increased by ~5%

More data from DICE regarding the weapon states that the usage rate and kill percentile has been reduced by about 3-4%, though the gun’s performance is still above expectations by about 4-5% compared to its counterparts like the GEW-46.

It’s the studios intention to gradually bring outlier weaponry back into line with those similar performance.

Hopefully the studio doesn’t go overboard and just nerfs the crap out of the gun that it’s rendered useless. There will always be meta weapons in shooters, it’s just a matter of balancing the weapons enough that all are viable.

Do you think the VHX-D3 got nerfed a little too much or just right? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Exorcism Quest Guide

Banishers is absolutely riddled with side content. While most of it is pretty straightforward, you might come across a certain side activity that requires a little more searching and map knowledge than your typical fetch quest. Our Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Exorcism guide will help walk you through everything you need to complete this mission.

Please note, in order to unlock this side quest you will first need to complete the “Through a Glass Darkly” Haunting Case. This can be found in Mount Pleasant at the Bligh Estate, and the Exorcism side quest will start automatically upon completing it.

In case it wasn’t obvious, spoilers ahead for this particular quest!

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Exorcism Quest Guide

You can view a video version of this quest guide here:

The premise of this quest is that Red and Antea seek to remove the curse that hangs on Ethel Bligh’s mirror, a key quest item from the Haunting Case it’s connected to. In order to do so, they first need to speak with Seeker to learn more about what might be affecting the mirror.

Find Seeker

This portion of the quest is easy enough, as Seeker will be marked on your map. She’ll likely be located at Siridean’s Island in her home. Fast travel here and speak with her, at which point she’ll recommend collecting three items to dispel the mirror’s curse: Soil from the mirror’s nearest Void, a lock of hair from someone who escaped its grasp, and a root from a great and ancient tree. You can ask Seeker questions about each of these to get some clarification; we highly recommend doing so.

After she gives you a to-do list, it’s time to head out and find these items! This can be tricky, especially since there are no waypoints to guide you to them. But don’t worry: we’ve got you covered.

Acquire a Root from a Great Tree

banishers ghosts of new eden exorcism

Seeker recommends a tree deep in The Dark Woods. If you look at your map, you might notice a sketch of a large tree right near the Kate’s Bivouac shelter. That’s a good place to start. Go ahead and fast travel to that shelter to start heading towards the tree.

Once here, the path to find the root is a little more difficult. Start by heading right out of Kate’s Bivouac from where you arrive when fast traveling. Slide out of the cave, then follow the cliff to a climbing wall below you. Climb down the wall and follow the path all the way to the bottom of this area, where you fought the specter of Nicholas Doolan during Thickskin’s story quest. You might have to fight off some enemies again here, but either way, push through once you’re finished and follow the path out of this area, crawling under a large pile of roots.

From here, follow the bend near the river to head back West, and at the split, take the left path down into a small cave area. You’ll see a bunch of roots in the wall, and one of these is your lucky item. On the back right wall is a spot you can interact with to complete this portion of the quest. Once you’ve picked up the Ancient Root, head back to Kate’s Bivouac to fast travel again, this time heading to Bligh Domain up North.

Acquire a Hair from Someone Who Escaped the Creature’s Grasp

This one’s the easiest item to obtain. Once you’ve traveled to Bligh Domain, head over to the servant’s house to talk to John. In case you’ve forgotten where his house is, we’ve included an image of the location below:

banishers ghosts of new eden exorcism

Talk to John and ask him for a lock of hair. He’ll give it to you, albeit begrudgingly, completing another section of this quest line. You’ve only got one more thing to grab! Unfortunately, this last one will require a bit more elbow grease.

Retrieve Soil from the Manor’s Nearest Void

The nearest Void actually sits directly below the Manor. The easiest way to get to it is through the house itself. Upon entering the front doors, head past the stairs to the right and then make a 180-degree turn left to see a staircase leading to the basement. If you haven’t already completed the Ensnare puzzle down here, there’s one node underneath the stairs and one down in the elevator shaft to the right of the core. Destroy these both, then head down into the cave beneath the house.

Once you’re down here, you’ll find another Ensnare puzzle. This time, you’ll see one core straight ahead and above the core. The other one is behind you near the ceiling, so destroy both of these to get access to the Void portal. This portal will require 4 Ethereal Bone Fragment and 1 Striped Wintergreen to perform a ritual on. You should likely have these ingredients already at this point in the game. Go ahead and start a Void Traveling ritual to head inside.

Once inside, you’ll have to fight through a whole heap of enemies to get to the end of the level. Go ahead and tackle this at your own speed. We recommend targeting the ranged enemies first throughout this encounter, as they’ll often spawn up high and out of reach, requiring you to use Red’s rifle to take them out. This Void also has a special effect where using your Decoction deals damage in an explosive circle around you, so feel free to abuse that as the damage is pretty hefty and you’ll get charges of it back for defeating enemies.

After pushing through the enemies, you’ll have to fight a Sorrow boss. To defeat it, run around the arena and look for three small pillars of dark matter. You’ll have to kill these first to remove the Sorrow’s shield. They’re fairly easy to destroy, but you’ll be facing a lot of other enemies as well as AoE attacks from the boss itself, so make sure to watch your health. Upon defeating the three pillars, just head to the center to defeat the actual boss, who’ll go down quickly.

Upon defeating the Sorrow, do not leave the Void yet! On the wall to the left of the Ritual spot that appears where the boss was is a small interactable. Interact with it to get Void soil and complete your check list. Congrats! You may now exit the Void.

Perform the Ritual

Exiting the Void will bring you to a cliff with a chest that contains the Careful Provision Decoction, a nice little reward for all your hard work. But the job’s not done yet. Head back to the Bligh Manor, which should now be marked with a waypoint on your map. Head inside and upstairs to the Master Bedroom to complete an Unbounding ritual and remove the curse from the mirror. This will complete the quest and reward you with 600xp. Congratulations!

We’ll be posting all sorts of guides and tips for Banishers in the coming week, so be sure to stay tuned in to us here at MP1st for more.

Helldivers 2 Update 1.000.005 Deployed This Feb. 13, Patch Notes Listed

Arrowhead Game Studios has pushed out Helldivers 2 update 1.000.005 on PS5, and this is the same as the patch released on PC yesterday, though this one most likely won’t be rolled back. Read on for the patch notes for the Helldivers 2 February 13 title update.

Helldivers 2 Update 1.000.005 Patch Notes:

  • Server Capacity and log in access:
  • We have eased the authentication request overall.
  • We have improved error message visibility and added a countdown timer to clearly show when a new attempt will be made.
  • Progression and mission reward not being granted:
  • We fixed the daily and difficulty progression error
  • Based on the testing we have done we believe we have fixed future mission rewards but will continue to monitor this closely as it is our top priority
  • To compensate for lost rewards, we are working on an increased reward event

Contrary to yesterday’s PC patch, Arrowhead announced that they “do not anticipate that there will be performance problems with the patch for PS5.”

We’re hoping that there are no performance issues with the patch as well, so the devs can finally move on to develop gameplay adjustments, and maybe fix other nagging issues. Speaking of which, if you or someone you know is suffering through the black screen issue, there is a workaround for it which you can read here.

Helldivers 2 Down With Crashing and Disconnection Issues Status for Feb. 13:

Over on the game’s official Discord channel, loads of reports just surfaced now from players:

There’s more reports of that but you get the gist. There are also reports of the game being down on Reddit as well.

What Is Being Done to Fix the Helldivers 2 Servers?

Just yesterday, Arrowhead Game Studios released a patch on PC that should have alleviated the server and mission rewards issues. However, they had to rollback the patch as it was causing performance issues for players.

For now, we are expecting another round of official server maintenance to take place this week, as the studio admitted they need the servers down in order to fix the game. Expect the PC patch to be re-released at some point this week with the PS5 patch to follow soon after.

Once we know more about the server situation or if there’s an official announcement from Arrowhead, we’ll be sure to update the article with the info.

Helldivers 2 Black Screen Crash Bug Fix Outlined

For players experiencing the Helldivers 2 black screen crash bug, it seems there is a simple workaround for this unearthed by the community, which is outlined below.

Update (Feb. 18): There is a better fix found which you can read about here.

Helldivers 2 Black Screen Crash Bug Fix:

Here’s a confirmed workaround/fix for it as per Reddit user aureum_castrum:

  1. Disable Steam input on controller
  2. Disconnect your controller from your PC
  3. Go to your files  \Steam\steamapps\common\Helldivers 2\bin
  4. Delete GameGuard
  5. Run helldivers2.exe with administrator

Apparently, the PS4 controller was the issue for launching the game. Not only that, but while in the tutorial section trying out a mouse and keyboard, they decided to reconnect the controller and the game stopped, and didn’t respond until the controller was disconnected.

This fix has been verified by another community member to have done the trick for them too.

Hopefully, Arrowhead patches this little bug out, though I imagine they’d want to fix the server and rewards issues first before doing so. Speaking of which, a patch was released earlier on PC, but was rolled back by the studio after it caused performance issues.

With now over a million units sold and counting, Helldivers 2 is the surprise hit of the year! Thankfully, Arrowhead has already confirmed that players will see a steady dose of post-release content and for free.

If you know anyone suffering through the black screen issue for Helldivers 2, point them to this article.

Ubisoft Hosts Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Speedrun Competition, Only to Patch Speedrunning Methods

Here’s a new way to patch your game. Following a recent speedrunning competition for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown hosted by Ubisoft, it seems the company then used the data and methods gleamed from the competition to essentially patch out the methods the participants used.

The competition itself happened late last month, with a winner even announced by the official Prince of Persia Twitter/X account:

When Was the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Speedrunning Methods Patched Out?

The patch to prevent speedrunners from exploiting the game came with patch 1.0.4, which was released last week. Of course, there is no mention of any speedrunning methods patched out specifically, but it has been noted by the speedrunning community.

Over on the Speedrunner.com, here’s the message that was posted about the update patching out the methods they used to go through the game fast:

“The game patch 1.0.4 which has been released by Ubisoft on February 8th, 2024 has fixed a number of glitches and tricks which were used in, or even core to, the Any% categories. Most notably, the boss zombie glitch has been patched out but also the restricted categories are affected: e.g., the invisible wall between the two seals at the entrance to the Pit of Eternal Sands now extends all the way up so the old strat where one simply sword hovers over it does not work anymore, cf. also the patch notes.

Long story short, as a result of the patch all runs done on previous versions of the game have been archived in a misc category (direct link). For the unrestricted categories this was the only feasible options. For the restricted category things are a bit more ambiguous since, e.g., there is another trick to get into the Pit of Eternal Sands early which, however, is a lot more difficult than the previous version. Thus to ensure a fair competition we decided to archive those runs, as well.”

I don’t know about you, but this seems like an odd move to make by the devs. I mean, not a lot of people will use speedrunning methods in order to finish the game, and even if they did, isn’t it within their rights to do so? Unless the methods used broke the game, which doesn’t seem like it did.

Regardless of this snag, The Lost Crown is an excellent game. You can read our review of it here, where we state, “Taking Prince of Persia and mixing it with the Metroidvania genre was a brilliant move, as the gameplay and abilities from the series mesh very well with this style.”

Thanks, Duckable!

Apex Legends Down This Feb. 12 for Some Users Due to Early Update Release

It seems that Respawn Entertainment may have accidentally released tomorrow’s update a tad too early, as reports of some users being able to download and install it have begun surfacing, with Apex Legends being down for them.

Apex Legends Down Server Status for February 12

If you’re trying to get logged into Apex Legends and notice a “No Server Found” error, you aren’t the only one. Multiple threads on Reddit have begun cropping up with the same issue, with users being locked out entirely.

The issue isn’t so much that the Apex Legends servers are down but more to do with Respawn accidentally releasing tomorrow’s update early in some regions. This is mostly those in Europe, as the PS5 and PS4 versions were meant to go up as preloads but ended up being installable instead.

Respawn hasn’t issued any update about the issue. Chances are, they’ll pull the update, but that will require you to re-download the entire game again if it happens. Alternatively, you could download the North American version via a North American PlayStation account; that way, you can still play in the meantime. Just be sure to delete this version once tomorrow rolls around, and the patch is officially live.

We’ll be sure to let you know if Respawn issues any update on the issue.

Apex Legends Preload Update for PS4 and PS5 Now Live

Ahead of tomorrow’s new season kick off, PlayStation gamers can now download the Apex Legends preload update (PS4 version 2.46, PS5 version 1.000.061). This brings the Breakout season into the game, which includes legend upgrades, crafting system changes and tons more!

Thankfully, the complete patch notes have been released by Respawn already, so dive in to see what’s being changed starting tomorrow.

Apex Legends Preload Update for PS4 and PS5:

PS4 version 2.46, PS5 version 1.000.061 (7.9GB)

BREAKOUT REWARDS

Every 2 weeks, a new Legend becomes free-to-play for the rest of the season. Each Legend will have a set of challenges to permanently unlock that Legend. Complete all Breakout Rewards Challenges before the season ends to unlock more rewards like the Reactive “Top Tier” Flatline and the Legendary “Runaway Renegade” Wraith.

Check out the full breakdown, including Legends and chase rewards, in our Breakout Rewards blog.

BREAKOUT MAP ROTATION

The following maps will be available in Trios and Duos for the season:

  • Olympus
  • Storm Point
  • World’s Edge

PERFORMANCE MODE: 120HZ

On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X, the Video Settings menu has a new “Performance” mode option that is available to players with 120Hz displays. This option targets 120 FPS performance with content optimizations and reductions to visual quality.

To achieve 120 FPS, current-gen consoles now run on a new multithreaded rendering system, built on top of the Rendering Hardware Interface (RHI). Previously, even with GPU optimizations, the Apex rendering engine has been bottlenecked by single-threaded rendering code, which could not scale to the capabilities of modern hardware. This new system allows us to fully utilize the GPU and forms the foundation for future improvements to the rendering engine.

CRAFTING

Breakout brings a complete rework to Crafting, streamlining the system. Welcome to Crafting 2.0, legends!

Replicators have quite a few changes, including a fancy new paint job. They are now free to use, and no longer require crafting materials—we’ve removed them and crafting rotations. When you open the crafting menu, you’ll see that the available options have been reduced: Shield Battery, Medkit, Ammo, and Player Banners. Printing any item will exhaust that replicator specifically for you. You’ll need to find another one if you want another item, so choose wisely.

To offset the single-use system, the number of available Replicators have been increased across the board. Every game will start with 12 Replicators spawned at the start of the match, with an additional Replicator airdrop at the start of Round 4 to add some late-game opportunities. We’re also including a few quality of life changes for Crafting:

  • Decreased interaction time with Replicators
  • Inventory can now be accessed from the crafting menu
  • Printed items left alone will auto-eject from the Replicator after some time

WORLD’S EDGE: RAMPART’S BIG MAUDE

With crafting materials gone, Rampart has been figuring out how to get more customers through her door, and what better way than with a Fire Sale!

All Big Maude paintball weapons are now free, but they will take time to dispense from their vending machines. Once a player has claimed their free weapon, they cannot get another. Loba will still be able to steal a second gun with her Black Market. There is also an increased variety of weapons to choose from, but gold kitted weapons are no longer offered at Big Maude.

LEGEND UPGRADES

This season we’re introducing the Legend Upgrade system for BR modes—an in-match progression system that deepens the Apex Legends experience by allowing you to tailor your Legend to your playstyle. Players will gain EVO points in a variety of new ways across the Battle Royale to level-up not just your armor, but your Legend—unlocking unique ability upgrades at Levels 2 and 3. With each match being a fresh start, the plethora of possibilities adds a new level of strategy and meta.

Helldivers 2 New Update for PC Released This Feb. 12, Tagged as Version 1.000.005 (Update)

Following today’s short maintenance work, Arrowhead Game Studios has released a Helldivers 2 new update on PC this February 12, and is coined version 1.000.005 by the devs. This brings a short list of fixes touching on server capacity and mission rewards issues. We expect the PS5 version to get patched sometime this week as well.

Helldivers 2 New Update for PC Patch Notes for Feb. 12 (Version 1.000.005):

Update: Arrowhead announced that they have rolled back the game version to a previous state due to gamers experiencing “significant degradation in performance” due to it.

Hello Helldivers,
This morning, we gathered the best engineers Super Earth can muster to look at the main issues that are impacting your experience and to fix them.

These issues are caused mostly by having so many players in the game and server capacity creating unexpected behaviors.

Let me update you on what we did so far with the latest patch being deployed:

  • Server Capacity and log in access:
  • We have eased the authentication request overall.
  • We have improved error message visibility and added a countdown timer to clearly show when a new attempt will be made.
  • Progression and mission reward not being granted:
  • We fixed the daily and difficulty progression error
  • Based on the testing we have done we believe we have fixed future mission rewards but will continue to monitor this closely as it is our top priority
  • To compensate for lost rewards, we are working on an increased reward event

That’s about it. Arrowhead seems to be focusing on improving the game’s servers and major issues concerning rewards before moving forward with changes for bugs and gameplay, which seems sensible for me.

With the game a bonafide success, we’re glad to see the studio working diligently on making sure these fixes are in the gamer’s hands right away. Once the PS5 patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Apex Legends Breakout Patch Notes Fires Out

Ahead of tomorrow’s title update for Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment has revealed the complete Apex Legends Breakout patch notes! This lists the incoming legend changes, the new performance mode incoming to current-gen consoles, rework of the crafting system and loads more.

You can read here what thought of the massive overhaul before it went live via EA’s private press event.

Apex Legends Breakout Patch Notes:

Overwatch 2 Season 9 Patch Notes Revealed, Read on for Every Change Incoming

With Season 9 of Overwatch 2 kicking off tomorrow on February 13, players aren’t just getting a new event in the Cosmic Crisis, but also a lot of Competitive Play updates, alongside hero adjustments and more. Thankfully, we know what changes are being done, as Blizzard has released the Overwatch 2 Season 9 patch notes ahead of the download.

Overwatch 2 Season 9 Patch Notes:

Season 9 Start: 11 am PST/2 pm EST/3 am HKT/8 pm CET

WELCOME TO SEASON 9: CHAMPIONS

Season 9 brings core gameplay updates, a reworked Competitive game mode, and a new Co-op event that will test the courage of even the bravest heroes as they face a dangerous threat of cosmic proportions.

NEW EVENT: COSMIC CRISIS

Face off against eldritch abominations in the twisted reality of Cosmic Crisis, a brand-new co-op mission. Work with three other players to repair your ship and escape the ruins of Ecopoint Antarctica while fighting off the monstrous Null Sector. But keep an eye out for your teammates… an ancient power lurks in the shadows, waiting for its chance to strike.

COMPETITIVE PLAY UPDATES

Developer Comments: With your feedback, we’ve made new improvements to Competitive Play that aim to provide more transparency into your progress after every match, plus we introduced a new skill tier and new Competitive Rewards to earn.

Skill Rank Reset

  • Given the significant changes to our heroes and the addition of a new skill tier, this reset is designed to give all players a chance to climb higher than ever before.
  • All roles in Role Queue and Open Queue in Competitive Play have been reset to Unranked.

Placement Matches

  • Placements have been rebuilt from the ground up. Your predicted rank will be displayed after each placement match.
  • You must complete 10 matches in a role to receive your Skill Rank for that role.
  • Winning your placements will have a significant impact on your final rank.

Competitive Updates

  • Competitive Updates have been reworked. Instead of requiring five wins or 15 losses to get a Competitive Update, updates now happen after every match.
  • Going forward, the Competitive Updates page now hosts information about your ranks in Role Queue and Open Queue, as well as your progress toward Competitive Point rewards.

Skill Modifiers

  • Modifiers now appear on the Competitive Progress page after each match.
  • Skill modifiers provide information on how much a rank will gain or lose progress after a match, including win or loss streaks, rank instability, and match favorability.

New Skill Tier – Champion

  • A new rank has been added above Grandmaster, called Champion, that is more exclusive than any other rank in Overwatch. Only an exceedingly small percentage of players will ever occupy this echelon of Competitive Play.

Versus Screen

  • The range of ranks for players in a match of Competitive Play is now displayed on the same screen where both teams are shown with their name cards, player icons, and titles.

New Grouping Requirements

  • Bronze through Diamond Players may group with other players within 2 Skill Tiers of their own Skill Rank.
  • Master players may group with other players within 1 Skill Tier of their own Skill Rank.
  • Grandmaster players may group with other players within 3 Skill Divisions of their own Skill Rank.
  • Champion players may group with only one other player within 3 Skill Divisions of their own Skill Rank.

Art & UI Updates

  • Skill Tier and Skill Division art for rank icons have been redesigned for improved readability.
  • The Competitive Skill Tier legend has been redesigned to include updated and new relevant information.

Competitive Points

  • Each win now grants 10 Competitive Points.
  • Each draw now grants 5 Competitive Points.
  • Each loss still grants 0 Competitive Points.

Competitive Progression

  • Competitive Challenges that award additional Competitive Points at the end of the season have been replaced with a new Competitive Progression system.
  • Every match grants progress toward your Competitive Progression meter, and after earning 30 you will receive an additional 100 Competitive Points.
  • Wins award 3 progress toward your Competitive Progression meter. Draws and Losses award 1 progress.

Competitive Rewards

  • Jade Weapon Variants have been introduced.
  • Each Jade Weapon Variant costs 3000 Competitive Points to purchase.
  • All players will start this season with a balance of 0 Competitive Points.
  • All existing Competitive Points have been converted into a new currency, Legacy Competitive Points.
  • Each Golden Weapon Variant now costs 3000 Legacy Competitive Points to purchase.
  • At the end of a Competitive Year, any remaining balance of Competitive Points converts to Legacy Competitive Points.

Matchmaking Rating

  • At the start of this season only, the internal Matchmaking Ratings for all players have been adjusted to push players closer to the normalized average (approximately at Gold 3).
  • Matchmaking Ratings have been decayed. The higher the rank, the more it has been decayed.
  • Most players will start at a lower skill rank and division than their most recent rank.

Competitive Challenges

  • Competitive challenges removed. Rewards and progress for Competitive Play are now displayed on the Competitive Progress page and titles are rewarded at the end of the season.

GENERAL UPDATES

PLAYER PROGRESSION

  • Added a new set of visual upgrades. Hero/Game Mode badge upgrades start at Level 500. Progression Level badge upgrades start at Level 2500.
  • Wrecking Ball title rewards are renamed from “Champion” to “Champ” to align with Junker Queen’s usage of the title (and to avoid confusion with the new Champion rank).
  • Adjusted amount needed to level up certain sub-badges for Mauga and Illari.

FRIEND ENDORSEMENTS

  • The endorsement is only eligible if you’re in the match for a set duration.
  • Endorsements are subject to the configured cooldown period of 12 hours.
  • Endorsements are subject to cooldown even if you unfriend the recipient.

SETTINGS

  • Added a feature for controller/keyboard users that remembers what you had focus when backing out of screens.

Official Xbox Podcast Special Episode Airs Feb. 15: Heads of Xbox to Discuss the Future of the Company’s Business

Following a rumor that Starfield and other titles might be coming to PS5 last week, the internet was in a storm. At the time, Phil Spencer promised a business update event in the near future to talk more about everything being discussed online. Today, we got confirmation of an Official Xbox Podcast special episode starring Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty that’ll focus on where the video game company is headed.

The podcast episode was announced in a tweet on the official Xbox account, which you can view below:

“Please join us for a special edition of the Official Xbox Podcast,” the tweet reads. “Hear from Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty as they share updates on the Xbox business.”

Long-time Xbox fans were up in arms last week following the rumors of Xbox exclusives finding their way to other platforms. It makes sense: if you bought an Xbox just to have access to specific titles, only to find later that those titles might come to PlayStation anyway, it might make that purchase feel pointless. You could’ve just bought a PS5 and waited a few years.

None of the higher-ups at Xbox have confirmed or denied any of the rumors, which makes matters worse. The anticipation of what might come next is killing most of the Xbox community at the moment. Hopefully, Phil and the gang have news to share that will put their many loyal fans’ minds at ease.

The Official Xbox Podcast special episode will stream on all podcast platforms and Youtube.com/Xbox on February 15 at 12pm PST/3pm EST/4am HKT.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Review – Ghost of War

Coming out of nowhere is Don’t Nod and Focus Entertainment’s Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. While it might be flying under the radar for some, we suspect that will change very, very soon, as Don’t Nod’s first AAA game is a very ambitious one, and is just flat out filled to the brim with activities to do, ghosts to banish and more.

Note that our review will, for the most part, be spoiler-free, as Banishers has a pretty compelling story, and it’s best if players experience it for themselves. Ready to banish ghosts? Read on for our review, banisher!

Spectral Love Affair

Banisher’s entire plot revolves around a nasty specter you encounter very early on and what happens to Antea (not-so-spoilers: she gets killed). Throughout the game, you’re basically banishing ghosts (essentially sending them to heaven/hell), trying to get back at the main baddie and debating whether to resurrect your dead girlfriend or not. It’s not that cut and dry of course, as there are various twists and turns throughout the journey that makes this a compelling tale.

Fantastic writing that pours out every inch of the world. Be that sticking to the main story or venturing off on side quests, the world of Banishers is brimming with lore and characters to see and meet. Don’t Nod gives you a reason to care, love, and hate these characters that make decisions have heavier weight to them.

The tale woven involves not only a lot of dialogue, but a lot of reading too. It’s up to the player whether they want to listen or read through everything Don’t Nod has inserted into the game when it comes to lore, backstory, character profiles and more. If you’re not a fan of it, you can skip dialogue options and choose to not read the documents, books and other stuff lying about.

The story happening within the game’s various inhabitants are nicely done as well, as you’ll be caught up in tales of thievery, murder, a love triangle and more. Simply put: this is not your ordinary side quest fetch mission, but definitely so much more (more on this later in the review).

With multiple choices with different outcomes on not just the main story but even with regards to side quests and characters, and with multiple endings (I believe there’s 4-5 total) there’s a lot to chew on in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.

Get Lost, Banish Enemies!

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is HUGE. While it might not be fully open world like how it is in Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption 2 and whatnot, it’s still easy to get lost in the game’s locales. If I had to make a comparison, it’s game world is quite similar to God of War Ragnarok’s, in the sense that you can (almost) go anywhere, but it’s not technically open-world, and truth be told, I prefer my games that way. It doesn’t feel restrictive, yet it’s not too open that you get sidetracked on what you really need to do and where you need to go. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a ton of distractions to pull you away from the main story, but it won’t make you want to shut off your console/PC due to how daunting it all can be at a glance.

Speaking of distractions, there’s a lot of stuff to do in Banishers, and I mean a lot. Outside of the main story/campaign, players will be able to tackle Haunting Cases (think of yourself as a Sherlock Holmes for the dead), Haunted Grounds, Scourges, Void Walks, looking for the Altars (scattered throughout the game’s world in order to in raise your max HP) and loads more. You will see various activities pinpointed to in the map with a “?” and on the on-set, it can be a little overwhelming to see so many of these scattered throughout — at least the ones not covered by the fog.

While some of the side activities consists of going to a marked spot and opening a chest, triggering an Altar or something, the Haunting Cases are anything but by-the-numbers. These are well thought out side missions that involve their own cast of characters (all fully voiced, too!) and it involves various inhabitants of the game’s world. What’s even better is, completing these cases will sometimes even spawn new missions of its own and usually have an actual ending for that character’s story arc. It’s a nice touch by Don’t Nod and will make completing each one less of a drag (mind, some side missions take close to an hour to finish).

However, what spoils this fun trek through the game’s world is the map. Now, I admit, I’m not the best when it comes to navigation and whatnot, but Banishers is the only game where I have to constantly bring up the in-game map to see where I am since some of the locales look alike and have no distinct markers to let you know you’re in which area. There’s nothing in the map that tells you of your elevation status or your destination’s, so sometimes it’s marked on the map but it’s sectioned off since the area you need to get to is either higher up or below you. Couple that in with no marker whether you’ve already searched a place or not, this makes running through the game’s world (yes, there is a fast travel feature but no horses or the sort, so you’ll have to hoof it the entire game) a chore. Add in that there’s a slight freeze up of some kind whenever you zoom in the map (at least on PS5), and well, it is an annoyance — one that I am hoping gets patched out soon after launch.

But all these little niggles doesn’t take away from the game’s plethora of side missions and how great they’ve been crafted. It might not be in the same caliber of The Witcher 3, but they’re close.

Seeing Red

If there’s a “weak” spot to Banishers. I’d say it’s the combat. Now, I’m only using weak here in the sense that because the game does so many things well, it’s surprising that the combat isn’t as deep as I’d like it to be.

To put it in familiar territory, combat is a bit like Soulsbourne meets God of War, though not quite as deep as either of the two. It plays around with light and heavy attacks, with unlockable abilities to give it more of a cinematic feel. Red has his own (quite limited) moves set, while Antea has her “Manifestations” as the game’s version of abilities. You have to fill the spirit meter in order to play as Antea in combat, while Red has his banish meter which he can use for various combat effects (finishing move, acts as a barrier for damage, etc.)

It’s enjoyable, and there’s plenty of room for a variety of builds to make, but there’s also a bit of clunkiness to go along with it. While you can collect weapons, armor and the like, a handful of them aren’t really useful unless you’re trying something crazy, On the upside, the game has a unique item upgrade system which means whatever weapon you like using, you can have that as your weapon/armor for the rest of the game…just be prepared to collect lots of materials along the way.

A word of advice for those experienced with Soulsborne games (or even other third-person action games), I’d crank the game’s difficulty up a notch. I played and finished the game on Normal difficulty, and I’m not sure if it’s because I tackled a lot of side missions, but about midway through my adventure, my character felt overpowered — to the point that bosses (even the final boss) hardly presented a challenge. Now, while that might have been the case for most of my playthrough, it didn’t dampen the shock factor of the bosses. There’s not a lot of bosses to go through in Banishers, but what’s there stand out. Don’t Nod has managed to craft memorable fights with excellent use of visuals, dialogue and atmosphere that made me look forward to the next boss encounter.

Into the Void

Aside from unique boss fights, Banishers’ art style and visual presentation is topnotch. This looks and feels like a AAA experience through and through. Every character and interaction has their corresponding voice over. In addition to the amazing audio video work, Banishers offer a good amount of replayability as well, as it offers different choices throughout the game (both in the main story and side quests) that will dictated the fate of various in-game characters, and of course, the ending you’ll get.

During the game, players can choose whether they want to ascend or resurrect Antea. Choosing which one will influence the way you play the game in order to get the ending you want. Are you willing to sacrifice a living human being in order to make sure your lady love can be resurrected? Or will you be fair and just, and let Antea ascend into the heavens once everything’s over? The choice is yours. For now, we’re not sure how these choices in-game will affect the overall ending and outcome of certain scenarios, and we’re curious which ending will be deemed cannon by Don’t Nod if and when we get a sequel.

Life to the Living, Death to the Dead

To say Banishers came out of nowhere to surprise me is an understatement. Here I was thinking we were getting another by-the-numbers third-person action game, and instead, we got an action-adventure game with a compelling story, meaty side quests, excellent production value, and what’s in my opinion an early Game of the Year candidate.

Sure, there’s a bug or two that’s irksome, the combat could have been a bit deeper, the in-game map implementation could be better, but all these things aren’t enough to bog down an otherwise excellent game.

I have no experience in making games, but I imagine crafting a AAA experience on a new IP is not an easy task, and Don’t Nod manages to do that and then some. Prepare yourself for the first surprise hit of the year, and if the game’s quality is any indication, this looks like the start of a new franchise — one that I can’t wait to dive into yet again. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is one haunting you owe it to yourself to experience.

Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • Sprawling in-game world with a ton of activities scattered throughout
  • Excellent audio-video production
  • Unique boss encounters
  • Big focus no player choice that have signicant consequences and how the characters develop throughout your playthrough.
  • Multiple endings to experience
  • Side quests that are meaningful (some side quests are the key to opening even more side quests that are either connected to the original or not).

Cons:

  • Map is confusing and needs better pathing for players to not get lost.
  • Combat isn’t as deep and probably won’t knock anyone’s socks off
  • Default difficulty might be a tad too easy for seasoned gamers.
  • Skill tree and progression are not as seamless and rewarding. There’s not a lot of abilities but more on buffing the player, cooldowns, etc.
  • Some stuttering, slowdown, and various bugs. (won’t ruin your experience) The PC experience is near perfect with a Nvidia 3080.

Ultros Review – The Loop Garden

Ultros is a rogue-lite Metroidvania with a colorful soul and a looping core. Balancing the standard tropes of the genre with a whimsical side-dish of gardening supported by some marvelous psychedelic artwork, it’s a solid entry that captures both the eye and the heart of gamers in search for their next grand journey. With some ingenious ideas and a progression system that rewards persistence and attention to detail, this is one to crash-land into without second thoughts.

Loop the Loop

The surreal setting of Ultros will make you forget about most things you’ve witnessed before. The Sarcophagus is a genuinely original and sometimes dazzling alien landscape where you have crash-landed, conveniently home for a demon named Ultros. It’s a bizarre and fairly unique landscape filled with strange lore and twisted creatures big and small, friend and foe, up to your discovery. As you attempt to find your way out, a black hole inevitably sucks you into a loop, and you restart the cycle with bolstered confidence and the reassurance that abilities are now cheaper and consequently easier to get.

Ultros Review

That is one of the beautiful things about Ultros. How it seemingly strips you from your progress and puts you back at the start, unsure if you are going to take as long to reach the point you were before, but in all likelihood, you’re going to find new paths. Defeat a boss, known as a Shaman, return to the colossal center room and the loop will restart; however, you may choose to continue exploring for a while longer, maybe attempt to kill another boss, but that’s entirely up to you.

Designing the vast world of Ultros surely wasn’t an easy feat. It’s a maze of huge proportions divided into several sections, many of them technically inaccessible before you unlock some abilities or Extractors – more on this later – and it can seem daunting at times, as you wonder what your next move should be. The map is useful, signaling some of the exits that you have yet to explore, but it’s not enough to convey that sense of security that you are indeed moving in the right path, with a surefire chance of success and return – at least during the first few hours of the 15 or so that it should take you to reach the ending.

To realize that everything ends up making sense is interesting, given the size of The Sarcophagus. You are ready to use your Cortex abilities and the Extractor’s help to unlock that path or reach that ledge you previously couldn’t, cut through plants or fly in designated locations to discover new places. Unless you are really lost and confused at this type of game, there will be a way to find the next place to go.

Ultros Review

You start each loop deprived of a mere weapon, which you will find after a short trip. Along the way you can slay aggressive alien organisms and collect parts of four different color-coded categories that you can consume, bloody tentacles and other unidentifiable viscera, ultimately giving you health but also nutrition to explore the Cortex, or in other words, the ability tree. Defeating an enemy by means of repetitive attack patterns will damage the part that drops, resulting in less nutrition; performing varied combos results in a prime quality part, offering more nutrition.

The Cortex is accessible via pods that double as save points. You can eat more parts to reach the nutrition thresholds necessary for each ability, unlocking even more in the process, playing around with the skill tree to see which ones you can get at the time. Extractors are these little sidekicks that grant you the valuable double jump ability and one specific power, such as flying on designated locations or cutting through dense plants. Each loop usually ends with a boss and soon rewards you with a new Extractor.

Kaleidoscopic Platforming

Ultros Review

If Ultros wasn’t so colorful, it could pass for a true horror game with underlying hallucinogenic tones; however, the bright palette and the countless details permeating every screen manage to be a feast for the eyes, a brand new world that is as inviting as it is unsettling. Coming from the talented mind and hands of Niklas “El Huervo” Åkerblad, known among gamers for his gruesome Hotline Miami cover art, there is no shortage of things to look at, memorable landmarks or boss encounters, and sometimes all this otherworldly beauty gets under your skin. It’s a gorgeous game, and if it’s at fault in something is that a lot of times the background can be too rich and vivid, too sparkly, so much that you often get confused on what you can hit and what you can’t. Sometimes, they may be static enemies or plants, or maybe they’re just scenery that you pass through without any interaction. This almost seamless blend between foreground and background ends up being one of the game’s shortcomings, as it has an effect on gameplay.

The boss fights are not only exciting but balanced, providing a nice challenge without being of the hair-pulling kind, like some Metroidvania games with Souls-like pretensions are aiming for. The often gruesome and visually stunning design really shines here, an art style that is memorable and rich, a true feast for the eyes until all the blood starts spilling and it ends on a pulpy explosion of viscera.

Ultros Review

Platforming is solid, never frustrating, and the levels are filled with secrets and the occasional surprise. You can find some gardens where to plant seeds, with each loop making it grow into beautiful trees and plants, sometimes giving you more items or allowing you to unlock and reach unexpected places. It takes a keen eye to find these garden spots sometimes, but it will be worth it as you reap the rewards on the next loops.

Combat is a progressive affair, starting from the true definition of a blank slate. By unlocking abilities, you are finally starting to discover your potential and chaining moves that reward you not with the traditional useless combo counters, but with the prime parts for you to chew on or use for further Cortex expansion. It’s a loop within a game about looping, and it works.

Not everything about fighting feels perfect, though; aerial kicks and combos don’t feel as accurate as they could be, hitting those pesky flying creatures isn’t a seamless affair, often falling short of getting close to them and landing the kick or slash.

Fight, Kill, Repeat

Ultros Review

Ultros is a great Metroidvania that ticks all the required boxes and then some. The magnificent art style deserves even more praise because it’s very original and drenched in dazzling alienesque tones, true eye-candy with no shortage of bloody moments and remarkable bosses, despite some potential confusion between what’s background and what’s not. Platforming and combat are both solid, and while the latter isn’t perfect, there’s enough comfort to enjoy some good slashing and dodging fun, mixed with a hint of gardening and a gripping loop mechanic. The biggest fans of the genre should dive into this cryptic Sarcophagus without hesitating.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • A beautiful, colorful, and original alien art style that is also gruesome
  • Interesting loop mechanic
  • Nice touch of gardening
  • Exciting and stunning bosses
  • Good length

Cons:

  • Sometimes hard to understand what is background and what isn’t
  • Aerial combat doesn’t feel entirely accurate
