Alone in the Dark Remake Players Will “Enjoy” the Story Without Need for Prior Knowledge, Includes “Hints and References” to Original

With the upcoming Alone in the Dark by Pieces Interactive and THQ Nordic, a lot of players will be experiencing the game for the first time. However, for those that didn’t know, this game is actually a remake of the original that was released in 1992.

Thankfully, players won’t need to know the original (or the first reboot back in 2008), to “enjoy” the story. This is according to Alone in the Dark Associate Producer Andreas Schmiedecker in speaking with MP1st, who also added that this re-imagining will contain “hints and references” to the original.

MP1st: What are some of the major differences (aside from the audio and graphics) from the original? Are there any sections cut? Alone in the Dark originally came out over 30 years ago. Obviously, technology has grown immensely since, with some games even having near-photorealistic visuals. But games and tech have always been more about the visuals, so we’re curious, with the long history of Alone in the Dark, what are some of the things that technology has brought to the table for the team, that has not only modernized the series, but also help blend in elements of the past, to help build this new telling of the game.

Schmiedecker: While we play a lot with elements and characters from the 1992 game and our story starts a lot like the original, we actually have a unique story that takes the original’s premise to all new places. If you remember the original story, you’ll find a lot of hints and references, but also a couple of surprises; while new players will get to enjoy the story without the need for any prior knowledge.

Alone in the Dark is set for release this October 25 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Go check out a gameplay look into the upcoming horror game right here.

Stay tuned to our full interview hitting the site soon.

Diablo 4 Day One Update 1.06 Drops This June 1

As expected from an online-centric game, Blizzard Entertainment has pushed out the Diablo 4 day one update 1.06 file on all platforms. This is a pretty small download, though one that all players will automatically receive once they connect the game online.

Diablo 4 Day One Update 1.06 Patch Notes:

Size: 60MB (PS5)

Blizzard has not revealed any patch notes, though the game’s Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora has confirmed that the day one patch will include balance changes, and it will be the patch that’s out for Early Access (in short: this is also the day one patch greeting players on June 6).

Given players will be getting balance changes based on the server slam build, we might see a proper patch notes changelog. If we ever do get one, we’ll slot it in the article.

If you’re unsure whether to get the game, go read our review where we state, “Do yourself a favor: ditch your reservations and step into Sanctuary as soon as you can. It’s likely going to be literal hell during the launch queues, but you’ll have a beautifully grim and visceral adventure ahead, one where every leveling up sound will feel like music to your ears.”

Starship Troopers: Extermination Early Access Impressions – The Good Kind of Bug Hunt

The Starship Troopers franchise already counts a few videogames under its belt, but none of them was remarkable or adept at conveying the terrific feelings and satire of the first movie. Fans of this kind of wacky bug hunting action were better off with a chapter of the Earth Defense Force series, at least until now – Offworld Industries is hard at work in Starship Troopers: Extermination, a co-op FPS that finally properly puts you in the frontlines of the desperate human war against the arachnid threat. There’s excitement, there’s bravado, and… not much else so far in this Early Access release.

Would You Like to Know More?

The original Starship Troopers movie was misunderstood at the time, but ultimately became a cult classic as soon as viewers started to understand that it wasn’t glorifying militarism; instead, it was deliberately mocking war and fascism, sometimes in such a cold and straightforward way that many assumed it was being genuine about it.

Starship Troopers: Extermination is now in Early Access and unfortunately doesn’t delve deep into the satire part of the movie, but thankfully offers joyful and chaotic bug battles where confusion and panic are brothers in arms, teamwork eventually pushing forward after a few initial rounds where everyone seemed to be going everywhere, lost in the arid and expansive map, in fact a clever theater that leads you down a streamlined road of randomized objective locations.

Starship Troopers: Extermination Review

Offering 16-player cooperative shooter action is much better than the traditional skimpier numbers for games of the ilk. This may not be to the scale of the battles in the movie, but it’s enough to make the battlefield look chaotic and messy for most of the time. Teamwork is necessary but not overly complex as to require constant communication, as sticking close to your fellow soldiers and performing the actions that are expected during a given mission should be enough to get you alive and well up to the extraction point. Throwing friendly fire into the mix is both terrific and terrifying, as you need to always keep your line of fire clean, something that is easier said than done with so many soldiers and bugs running amok.

Gunplay is pleasant, but not perfect due to a noticeable lack of hit feedback. The bugs act as sponges and don’t react in any way to your bullets apart from a shriek, and there isn’t any limb damage, something that could be a great gameplay twist when fighting arachnids. The movie doesn’t hold back on bugs twitching and being pushed back when shot at, but here they just go out with a whimper.

What’s cunning about Starship Troopers: Extermination is the mix of first-person shooting and base building in a scenario of huge stress. While far from groundbreaking, the two modes materialize in a solid and intertwined way, encouraging you to alternate between keeping the bugs at bay and using your build tool to deploy and repair structures in the heat of the moment. Understanding who should be up in the towers blasting arachnids and who should be running around the base repairing and rebuilding walls and towers is of utmost importance. Naturally, you are limited to specific build zones, as the sprawling alien world is mostly unprepared for this kind of gameplay. The severe limitations in structure numbers don’t leave much room for imagination or supremely vast bases, as you may find the limit reached in a minute or so.

One of the issues with the current state of the game is that there’s not much variation to the events. The current gameplay loop is a simple matter of achieving one objective, shoot, run to the next, shoot again, build some barriers and towers, defend, and run to the extraction point, shooting all the way. This is a rough but reliable draft of what you and your mates will be doing for several hours, about 20 minutes per match, with no real game changers in the middle – there’s only one map, no different mission types tasking you to go into a cave or something like that, no ordering one of the teams to tackle one objective while the others go for a different one… The game feels stale in the long run, despite its obviously successful attempt at creating a convincing atmosphere.

Would You Like to Play More?

Starship Troopers: Extermination Review

Lack of content is the major problem right now with Starship Troopers: Extermination. Well-rounded and immersive, it just doesn’t bring enough variety to keep a large player base excited for long. There are only three classes: Hunter (Assault), Bastion (Heavy), and Operator (Support), each one with a utility slot and two perk slots, but even some of these gadgets and abilities are common throughout the classes. Leveling up unlocks new weaponry as well, a progression loop that doesn’t bring any surprises to the table.

And then we have the meager two game modes: Advance and Secure, and ARC, with a Horde mode coming sometime later. The first one was briefly detailed above, as your squad completes a couple of objectives, protects a base, then runs to the extraction dropship while all hell breaks loose. ARC mode is about building the base, gathering ore and gas, and defeating the arachnids. And… that’s it. Too slim, warranted by the Early Access label, but slim nonetheless.

Starship Troopers Extermination Review

Performance is another aspect that hopefully will see some improvement when the full release arrives, as the huge number of bugs onscreen occasionally takes its toll on the frame rate. Still, knowing the developer’s track record on Squad and the roadmap for this game, Starship Troopers: Extermination will eventually come to life with new planets, more game modes, a bug hive elimination mission, among other things. It’s too early to make a proper judgment on a game that has a solid skeleton, but still needs  a lot more meat on its bones.

The quality of Starship Troopers: Extermination isn’t in question anymore, and fans of the uneven but unforgettable movie will have a blast taking out hordes of bugs, despite the potential for better gunplay; the thing that you should ponder on is the sameness of the Early Access version and if it’s worth enlisting right now, or if you’re better off waiting for other citizens to fight the war and join in when the game has fully released, hopefully having evolved into something more compelling, deeper, with a more enthralling mission structure and map variety. You may still have a great bug hunting time as it is, sure, but this life of a soldier will probably wear you out quickly.

MP1st was given access to the Early Access build of Starship Troopers: Extermination for our hands-on session. The Starship Troopers: Extermination full release is planned for PC after roughly one year in Early Access.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Map Twice as Big as Previous Game, Players Able to Switch Between Peter and Miles at Any Time Outside of Missions

If you liked swinging around Manhattan in the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game and thought it was a large open world, you haven’t seen nothing yet. Insomniac Games has confirmed that the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 map is twice as big as the first game.

Speaking to Famitsu, Creative Director Bryan Intihar and Game Director Ryan Smith both shared new details about the Spidey sequel. For starters, prepare for a play area twice as big as the first game

Bryan Intihar: This work, Queens and Brooklyn have been added, and roughly speaking, the map size is about twice that of previous works. These two areas are rather small residential areas, so I think you can feel the charm different from Manhattan. We have prepared unexpected situations that have never existed before, such as battles using rivers that pass between cities, so please look forward to it.

In the same interview, Ryan Smith confirmed that players will be able to freely switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales at any time — as long as they’re not in a specific mission.

Ryan Smith: As you can see, there are scenes where the character is decided during the story mission. However, when exploring the open world outside of story missions, you can freely switch between characters.

Some content is exclusive to a specific character, but we also have content that allows you to choose whichever you prefer to play. Since they are both Spider-Man, they have some things in common, but Miles is more speedy than Peter, and they each have their own individuality, so I hope you can choose your favorite character.

In case you missed it, go watch the lengthy gameplay demo Sony showed off featuring Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay where we see Peter’s new powers in action.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to swing out to the PS5 sometime this year.

Battlefield 2042: DICE Explains Why Only Engineers Have Anti-Tank Grenades

Earlier this year, DICE rolled out a patch that a lot of Battlefield 2042 fans were looking forward to given it reworked specialists into classes. Unfortunately, one byproduct of that massive change is this meant that not every specialist/class can equip anti-tank grenades.

In a roundtable group Q&A conducted by EA as part of the Season 5 reveal which MP1st was a part of, DICE was asked what the intent of the studio was in making the anti-tank grenade exclusive to the Engineer class.

Here’s what Sam Vanta, Core Gameplay Designer at DICE, had to say about the topic:

Hey, sure- so I think it’s important to bearin mind the journey 2042 has been on. We went out the door with Specialists which had access to all of the equipment in the game, which ultimately led to the negative sentiment in that players felt the class based gameplay had been lost- to which in update 3.2.0 we went back to the drawing board on this and began adding gadget restrictions in place. The anti-tank grenade speaks to the class fantasy of the engineer and is significant in its impact ingame. The risk we run by enabling this grenade to all classes is that every class is suddenly back to having an effective anti-vehicle answer which runs counter intuitive to the rework. Equally the meta of the game is important to us, this is something we’ll continue to evaluate going into Season 5 based on feedback and telemetry.

The good news here is, DICE seems open to the idea of changing this if the feedback and data align. That said, the studio does have a point since it does make the rework kind of moot if they do this.

In other news, Battlefield 2042’s Season 5 won’t be the last support we from DICE, as the studio confirmed they are working no new content beyond the upcoming season. Speaking of which, Season 5 launches next week on June 7, and you can read all the new stuff incoming with it here.

Report: Microsoft and ABK Considering Pulling ABK From the UK and Offering Enforceable Remedies as Ways Around Activision CMA Block (Update)

According to a recent report published by MLex, Microsoft executives are actively exploring ways to close its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, despite facing a block from the UK. The CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) has currently issued an order which prevents Microsoft from acquiring any interest in Activision, or Blizzard, or King, including their subsidiaries. The order is currently interim and expected to be made permanent soon.

Therefore, in response to this, MLex has learned that Microsoft has hired additional lawyers to find out possible ways to close the Activision deal despite the block from UK’s CMA. One possibility includes ABK exiting the UK and relocating to another European country outside the jurisdiction of the CMA. Through this scenario, Activision will continue to sell its games through a distributor.

Another possibility that Microsoft is exploring is to unilaterally extend the remedies it proposed (and were accepted) to the EU (European Commission) to the CMA. However, something along the lines of those remedies were proposed to the CMA but rejected. This approach will require Microsoft to voluntarily implement measures to address concerns specific to the UK market.

Microsoft is also currently challenging the draft issued by the CMA that prevents them from acquiring any interest in the CMA for 10 years. CMA’s ability to impose a global ban to address concerns in the UK market is the central concern. Microsoft may possibly challenge the CMA’s order and narrow its scope to the UK only and allow the deal to close elsewhere in the world.

Lastly, MLex understands that Microsoft is also looking at the possibility of going ahead with the acquisition itself, and later argue in court that CMA’s draft is “illegal” if challenged by legal action by the UK watchdogs.

A Microsoft spokesperson told MLex that “our priority is pursuing the appeal process in the UK, and we remain committed to constructive dialogue and solutions to address regulatory concerns.” When Satya Nadella, CEO Microsoft, was asked that if the company could go ahead and close the deal, and stop selling products in the UK, the CEO responded, “let’s wait for it all to play out.”

When MLex asked a Microsoft representative on May 12 whether it could close around the UK, they said that it was a “complicated question,” but “at some point we may need to think about it.” However, a spokesperson from Microsoft also advised against reading too much into the comments.

It seems like Microsoft is determined to close its $68.7 billion USD merger with Activision regardless of what they have to do. There are still some roadblocks and approvals they require before it is possible, so stay tuned to MP1st for all the latest updates regarding the Microsoft-Activision deal.

Editor’s Note: We’ve updated the headline to clarify that ABK, as a publisher, is considering exiting the UK and selling its games in the UK through a distributor to close this merger. Microsoft, as a whole, is not exiting the UK market.

Meta Quest 3 Set to Launch This Fall for $500, Features and Trailer Revealed; Quest 2 Price Decreased to $300

Mark Zuckerberg officially unveiled the next Meta Quest virtual and mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest 3, which is set to launch in the Fall of 2023. Meta Quest 3 features higher resolution, stronger performance, breakthrough technology, and a slimmer form factor. Find the full features list and trailer below.

Meta Quest 3 Features:

Our Most Powerful Headset Yet

Quest 3 combines our highest-resolution display and pancake optics to make the content look better than ever. To power those extra pixels, this will be the first headset to feature a next-generation Snapdragon chipset developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies. That next-gen Snapdragon chipset delivers more than twice the graphical performance as the previous generation Snapdragon GPU in Quest 2 — meaning you’ll get smoother performance and incredibly crisp details in immersive games.

Immersive VR + Breakthrough Meta Reality in a Single Device

On Quest 3, our best-in-class Meta Reality technology lets you seamlessly blend your physical world with the virtual one. These new experiences go beyond today’s mixed reality by intelligently understanding and responding to objects in your physical space and allowing you to navigate that space in natural, intuitive ways that were nearly impossible before. High-fidelity color Passthrough, innovative machine learning, and spatial understanding let you interact with virtual content and the physical world simultaneously, creating limitless possibilities to explore. Now you can play a virtual board game on your kitchen table with Demeo, decorate your living room with virtual art courtesy of Painting VR, or dive into a fully immersive world to do things that are simply not possible otherwise.

Quest 3 makes Meta Reality available to even more people and at a lower price point, making it our first mass-market offering to deliver both cutting-edge VR and MR experiences in a single device, setting a new benchmark for future headsets.

Comfort + Control

With a 40% slimmer optic profile* compared to Quest 2, Quest 3 is a sleeker, more comfortable headset. We also completely redesigned Quest 3’s Touch Plus controllers with a more streamlined and ergonomic form factor. Thanks to our advances in tracking technology, we’ve dropped the outer tracking rings so the controllers feel like a more natural extension of your hands and take up less space. We also included TruTouch haptics that first debuted in Touch Pro to help you feel the action like never before. You can even upgrade to our fully self-tracked Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers for a premium experience. And hand tracking will be supported out of the box, so you can explore without controllers, thanks to Direct Touch that lets you use just your hands to interact with virtual objects.

World’s Best Library of Immersive Content

Quest 3 is compatible with the Quest 2 catalog of over 500 VR games, apps, and experiences (and counting), and we’ve got even more exciting new VR and MR titles lined up for launch. That means Quest 3 will have the world’s best library of immersive experiences on day one. Be sure to tune in to today’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase for a rundown of new games and updates coming to the Quest Platform — plus a sneak peek at Quest 3’s AAA flagship adventure.

Meta Quest 3 will be launching later this year for $499.99 USD for the 128 GB variant, shipping in all countries where Meta Quest is currently supported. Meta says it will offer additional storage options and share more details at Meta Connect, which will take place on September 27, 2023.

Moreover, the company also announced that it will be reducing prices for the Meta Quest 2. Starting June 4, Meta Quest 2 will be availeble for $299.99 USD for 128 GB variant, while the 256 GB variant will be cut down to $349.99 USD.

The price cuts come with a software update which improves the performance for the Quest 2. You can read more about it here:

In an upcoming software update, we’re updating the Quest 2 and Quest Pro GPU and CPU. Quest 2 and Pro will see an up-to 26% CPU performance increase with an up-to 19% GPU speed increase for Quest 2 and 11% for Quest Pro. As developers take advantage of these changes, you can expect smoother gameplay, a more responsive UI, and richer content on both headsets. And we’re enabling Dynamic Resolution Scaling for both Quest 2 and Quest Pro, so games and apps can take advantage of increased pixel density without dropping frames.

Report: Redfall Devs Reportedly Hoped That Project Would be Cancelled or Rebooted by Microsoft

A recent report delving into the development of Redfall sheds light on the reasons behind its commercial and critical failure. The report mentions anonymous sources from the Arkane team who hoped that Redfall would be cancelled or rebooted by Microsoft, among other reasons that set the game up for instant failure.

Redfall, the first-ever multiplayer, co-op shooter from Arkane Austin, was released exclusively on Xbox and PC platforms after Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion USD.

According to anonymous sources in the report, Arkane Austin, following the release of the critically acclaimed but commercially underperforming Prey in 2017, sought to fulfill its publisher’s advice and venture into the realm of games-as-a-service (GAAS) titles. The aim was to maximise the financial prospects and monetization potential of their projects.

However, this shift posed a challenge for Arkane Austin, as the studio was primarily known for its single-player experiences. Many leaders within the team were initially hesitant to embrace the idea of creating a multiplayer game, leading to confusion and demotivation among the developers.

Furthermore, the report highlights the significant staffing issues that plagued the development of Redfall. Arkane Austin operated with a team of fewer than 100 employees and received limited outsourcing support from Bethesda. Additionally, a considerable number of experienced developers who were not enthusiastic about working on a multiplayer title reportedly left the studio, including over 70% of the team behind Prey.

Several factors contributed to the staffing challenges faced by Arkane Austin. These included difficulties in filling vacancies, comparatively lower salaries, the studio’s location, and the need to convince employees to embrace the concept of a multiplayer-focused game as new developer’s were attracted to Arkane’s single-player immersive-sims.

The report also mentions the prominence of microtransactions in Redfall’s design. Under ZeniMax Media’s guidance, the company urged all its development studios to create live-service titles, with microtransactions being a big part of Redfall until 2021.

In the same year, ZeniMax was acquired by Microsoft, and while the microtransactions were removed from the final build, Arkane’s team was expecting more from Microsoft. They expected Redfall to either be cancelled or rebooted as a single-player only title. However, to the surprise of Arkane’s staff, Microsoft took a very hands-off approach and positioned Redfall as one of its flagship games for 2023, alongside Starfield.

Xbox head, Phil Spencer, also addressed Redfall’s failures, expressing his disappointment and saying that the team will “revisit the process” going forward. We can only hope that Bethesda’s upcoming flagship title, Starfield, does not go through the same fate Redfall did. We should be learning more about the upcoming title in Xbox Games Showcase set for June 11.

Warface Update 2.62 Fires Out for Warface Day Event and Changes This June 1

Crytek has released Warface update 2.62 on both consoles and PC this June 1, and this ushers in the “Warface Day” event alongside gameplay-related tweaks. Read on for the official patch notes.

Warface Update 2.62 Patch Notes for June 1:

Friends!

An update has been installed on the game servers. In it, you’ll find the “Challenge” event dedicated to Warface Day, a new assault rifle HK433, and a set of the character Ursula Ellis that will become available later, along with a number of bug fixes.

NEW CONTENT

Event “Challenge”

We’d like to present to you a festive in-game activity with lots of rewards you can get for participating. Before rushing into battle, you’ll have to choose which side to fight on — Warface or Blackwood. Choose wisely as it’ll affect the rewards you get in the end. After making the decision, try and earn as many points for the chosen team and do your best, together, to get the unique rewards!

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT

AVAILABLE SOON

HK433

The HK433 is a German modular assault rifle fit for 5.56×45 bullets. It has a number of characteristics similar to the G36 and the HK416. This rifle was first introduced in 2017 and is branded as a universal, highly reliable weapon.

The HK433 offers a good combination of specs: high base and minimal damage, high fire rate and accuracy, as well as increased damage multipliers to the head and the extremities. The rifle has a number of unique attachments.

You can install mods on it, unique ones included. The first one increases reload speed by swapping the magazine to a smaller one, and you can unlock it on the second mastery level. The second mod changes the firing mode to bursts-of-3 and boosts damage, whereas the fire rate gets reduced, and the recoil – increased.

THE GOLDEN VERSION OFFERS BETTER FIRE RATE AND A MORE SPACIOUS MAGAZINE.

Ursula Ellis Suit

Ursula Ellis is a young woman, a helicopter pilot, born in East London. Soon she will share her story. Until then, let’s have a look at the contents of her themed set. There you’ll find the Ursula Ellis Suit, the HK433, the Buckled Lupara and the Khopesh of the new “Rainforest” series, as well as camos for those models, an achievement set, and a “Pilot’s Helmet” weapon charm.

As always, the themed charater-related items will be available via special contracts, the launch of which we will announce later.

CONTENT CHANGES

Weapons and Gear

  • SIG MPX Copperhead: the weapon’s recoil (singlet version) has been decreased by 15%.
  • The main screen theme has been replaced with a festive one.

BUG FIXES

Weapons and Gear

  • SIG MPX Copperhead: fixed a bug, due to which only the right weapon (double-wield version) sometimes appeared in the character’s hands when picked off the ground.
  • AUG A3 9mm XS Custom, Fabarm STF 12 Compact (all versions): fixed a bug, due to which the weapons had no sounds.
  • Moray SPAS-12 Special: fixed a bug, due to which the weapon’s characteristics differed from those of the regular version.
  • Hidden War Saiga Spike, Tigerstripe Mateba Autorevolver, Particle QSZ-92: fixed a bug, due to which the weapons’ rarity differed from that of the regular versions.
  • Fixed a visual bug, due to which some weapons dropped no shade.
  • Enchanted Khopesh: fixed a bug, due to which the weapon was displayed incorrectly in the first person view.

PvP

  • “Oil Depot Convoy”, “Phantom Zone Convoy”: fixed a bug, due to which playing on the maps did not count towards the progress of the original map achievements.

PvE and SpecOps

  • Engineer Training mission: fixed a bug, due to which it was impossible to select the claymore if the player equipped it before the corresponding stage of the tutorial.
  • Fixed a bug, due to which the turrets in the “Sunrise” SO dealt no damage to the player.
  • Fixed a bug, due to which, when playing as SED, the weapon’s heat indicator was incorrectly displayed in some special operations.

Other

  • Updated some in-game interface and item icons.
  • Updated localisation: fixed some in-game and item descriptions, fixed some inconsistencies

There’s also a game update released on PC that touches on quite a few bugs.

BUG FIXES

IMPORTANT

  • “Outlaws” Event:
    • Fixed a bug due to which the player could not connect to an event PvP match. They got an endless timer or an inactive “Connect” button.
    • Fixed a bug due to which the completion of the special operation “Black Shark” didn’t count towards the progress of the event contracts.
  • Fixed some causes of game client crashes. The situation should improve for those players who experienced long loading, who had a lot of expired items in the Inventory, or experienced crashes when running the game in the background.

WEAPONS AND GEAR

  • Typhoon F12: fixed a bug due to which the mod increasing the firing range worked incorrectly. It was impossible to upgrade it or there appeared a second similar mod.

OTHER

  • Fixed a bug due to which the status of the latest game activity in the character profile window might display incorrect information. For example, it showed that a player was offline when they were online, or an unrealistic latest login date.
  • Events: fixed a bug due to which the items that the player already owned were not marked as purchased and unavailable for purchase in the event showcase.
  • Updated localization: added some missing game and item descriptions, fixed some inconsistencies.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • In the Ranked Store, the item is displayed as unavailable if the player already has it in the Inventory and it expired.
  • When firing from any weapon, ejected shells may not be seen.
