PGA Tour 2K23 Adding John Cena to Roster This April 7

Have you ever wanted to have a professional wrestler swing a golf club? Regardless what your answer is, HB Studios and 2K Games think it’s a good idea, as PGA Tour 2K23 will be adding John Cena to its roster this April 7!

The announcement was made today by 2K:

I wonder how players will react to playing as a character they can’t see? Boggles the mind, but I gather, they will find a way.

Other non-pro golfers in the game include four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry, and the greatest basketball player of all-time, Michael Jordan. Who’s next? Are we seeing the Undertaker be ushered into the game? What about characters from other 2K properties? I doubt we’ll see those, but it’s an entertaining thought to think about.

Chances are, we’ll be getting a title update for John Cena’s PGA Tour 2K23 debut, and once it’s out, we’; let our readers know. Speaking of updates, we got one last week that introduced new content, which you can read about here.

Everywhere “Not a Blockchain Game” Reaffirms Devs; Will Feature Both Soft and Hard Currencies

In case you didn’t know, former Rockstar Games North boss Leslie Benzies  (Grand Theft Auto, LA Noire) built his own studio called “Build a Rocket Boy” (also known as BARB), and is currently developing “Everywhere” — a game that lets you craft your own experiences, while being its own game at the same time. Confused? Yeah, I don’t blame you.

While info about the game has been rather scarce, job listings regarding blockhain development surfaced on the studio’s website last year, which suggests that the game might be a blockchain game. Thankfully, the studio has reaffirmed that it’s not that kind of game.

In the latest issue of EDGE magazine (#383), Chief Development Officer Mick Hocking states that blockchain doesn’t “add” anything to the game.

Unequivocally, we are not a blockchain game. We don’t really need the tech at the moment, because everything is within our walled garden. So blockchain doesn’t add anything to that for us. We can do transactions – you can sell, buy, share content within the game. It’s only when you want to go outside of that where you need a ledger on the blockchain. – Mick Hocking, BARB Chief Development Officer

In the same issue, Leslie Benzies confirms that Everywhere has an in-game store, and will use both “soft” and “hard” currencies. Speaking about blockchain and NFTs being in Everywhere, Benzies was a little less committal.

We don’t know what will happen in the future. We’re like everybody else: let’s wait and see where the world goes. That said, right now we’re focused on a very traditional mix of soft currency and hard currency. Leslie Benzies, BARB founder

Mind, the details of Everywhere’s in-game store and how these currencies will work isn’t known at the moment.

Everywhere has no firm release date just yet but BARB hopes to have a playable slice of it sometime this year. Alongside Everywhere, there’s also “MindsEye” which is an episodic AAA experience built in Everywhere, There’s a teaser for it released last week, which you can check out here.

E3 2023 Is Officially Cancelled

While we went on for years without an E3 event because of the pandemic, it seems we won’t be getting one this year as well. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has confirmed that it has cancelled E3 2023 — something we could have guessed a mile away.

Originally set to take place this June 13 until June 16, the event’s showing for this year was always in doubt given Microsoft, Sony and even Nintendo all confirmed they weren’t going to be part of it. Not only that, but big-name publishers like EA also opted to do their own thing, which is the same case for most companies these days.

The final nail(s( in the E3 2023 coffin was the sudden about-face of Ubisoft from attending, to hosting their own show. Following that, SEGA and Tencent also pulled out, which meant the event had no big name company that was attending.

According to IGN, two sources have confirmed of the event’s cancellation, with the ESA sending out emails to its members today. The email states that while the E3 “remains a beloved event and brand,” the 2023 show ” simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

Will we see E3 resurface again for the 2024 show? I honestly can’t say. With Sony, Nintendo and even Microsoft delivering their own direct shows to announce their products, and how these said shows consume less time and budget, we might not see the big three attend another E3 for a very long time even if there is a show next year.

Do you think we’ll see another big E3 event next year or in the future? Or is this the end of E3 as we know it?

CDPR on Why New Witcher Game ‘Project Sirius’ Has Been Restarted, Says It Didn’t Align With Studio

CD Projekt Red sheds more light on the recent news that Project Sirius has been rebooted. Speaking during the CD Projekt Red 2022 earnings report, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz had this to say concerning the news of rebooting Project Sirius.

I’m aware that it’s not great to hear from a company that the project is being reevaluated, but at the same time, in order to stay innovative, we must experiment and be brave when trying new path.

And to stay in control and keep the right course, especially with a project that is new to us in terms of design developed by a new studio in our family. We need to keep evaluating the situation as we move along. It’s better to cut costs early and even restart if needed than to carry on.

The company later goes on to say that they didn’t want to carry on with a project that they were not aligned with. For now, the future of Project Sirius does appear to be uncertain, as CDPR was hesitant to answer anything else regarding it.

For those unaware, Project Sirius is a new Witcher title that features a multiplayer components. No other details have been provided outside of that, though seeing that CD Projekt Red is currently re-evaluating it, the multiplayer side of it may end up changing down the road. That’s assuming the title doesn’t end up getting canceled.

Path of Exile Crucible Release Date Set for April for PC and Consoles, Key Features Listed

Path of Exile fans won’t have long to wait for the next expansion, as Grinding Gear Games has officially confirmed that Path of Exile Crucible will be available next month for both PC and console players.

As revealed during today’s reveal stream, Path of Exile Crucible is officially launching on April 7 on PC and April 12 for consoles! Additionally, the stream also revealed a number of key features that’ll be part of this update (dubbed 3.21,) as well as an exciting new trailer to showcase the new expansion.

Path of Exile Crucible Trailer

Crucible Key Features:

  • Crucible Challenge League – Introducing the Crucible Challenge League, a new expansion to Path of Exile that pushes the boundaries of Path of Exile’s item system by letting you augment your weapons with their own skill trees. These trees provide bonuses that improve or augment your character’s playstyle. Skills in the trees consume experience from Crucible encounters to unlock but can have quite powerful effects. In Crucible encounters, players choose a weapon to improve by channeling it at an ancient forge. As you channel your weapon, molten monsters will combine into larger and more fearsome foes. Pushing your limits is the fastest way to level up your weapon, but doing so increases the risk of failing the challenge. In its exclusive endgame area, The Forge of the Titans, these trees can be combined together to create weapons of unprecedented power.
  • Atlas Gateways – A new addition to Path of Exile’s Endgame, Atlas Gateways are new nodes that allow instant traversal between two locations in the Atlas Passive Tree, easing the amount of travel points which lets players focus on building the tree that lets them play the content they want.
  • Endgame Content Revamp – Breach/Abyss – Two older league mechanics, Breach and Abyss, have been revamped. Both mechanics have had a reduction in clutter and improved gameplay, resulting in a more streamlined experience with highly-focussed rewards.
  • Passive Tree and Masteries Rework – Around half of the Masteries have been reworked, with the new Masteries having more interesting effects that will shake up many builds and provide additional options for new ones.
  • New Vaal Skills – Nine new Vaal Skills have been added to the game. These are versions of existing skills that improve and augment the original skill, giving players a periodic boost when they need it, whether it’s to focus on defeating a boss or mitigating burst damage in an emergency.
  • Ascendancy Reworks – The Saboteur and Pathfinder ascendancy classes have been reworked by giving them new and exciting tools that are more impactful and push their themes even further.
  • Ruthless Improvements – Several improvements to the Ruthless game mode have been made, including the return of Eternal Orbs and the introduction of a Ruthless-specific set of challenges to complete.

Stay tuned as we’ll have more details about Path of Exile Crucible.

Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court Console Announcement Trailer Rides Out With May 17 Release Date

Crusader Kings 3’s Royal Court DLC is finally making its way to consoles, and a new trailer has been released ahead of the expansion’s launch. Royal Court is set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles on May 17 later this year.

Here’s the full announcement trailer:

Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court first launched on PC last February 8, 2022, and while the DLC was planned on consoles for some time, it won’t be until May 17 that non-PC players can finally try the expansion out. Here’s the full list of features from the DLC’s Steam store page:

There is but one true center for power and prestige: a ruler’s court. Step into your own fully immersive throne room with Crusader Kings: Royal Court, and get ready to impress vassals and courtiers with your splendor and treasure on display. Watch visitors pay respect or family members squabble as you pass judgment in royal audiences, establishing the vital link between your people and your realm.

In Crusader Kings: Royal Court, you can commission great works of art from inspired craftspeople. Impress your rivals with the grandeur of your court, or awe them with your noble house’s heirlooms and relics. An enhanced Culture system lets you guide your people to novel cultural understandings as they merge or splinter off, embrace their heritage, learn languages, or acquire new traditions.

A Royal Court on display

  • As King or Emperor, watch as your personal throne room comes to life with the vast range of drama and intrigue of your court. Step into a fully 3D realized space, available in one of four major cultural visual styles, and fill it with regalia and majesty.
  • Harsh or benevolent, pass judgment on those seeking arbitration. Hold court and watch as your courtiers scheme and vie for your attention.
  • Match yourself against your greatest rival with your court’s grandeur. Or fail to impress them and suffer the sad diplomatic consequences of bad taste.

A true treasure

  • Show off your exquisitely crafted relics, or focus on your noble house’s history with your family heirlooms. A whole range of new artifacts can be admired in the series’ return of the inventory system.
  • Talented craftspeople, from jewelers to weavers, can be employed on special projects, adding even more unique items to your domain.
  • Commission special great works of art or win artifacts in battle. Be careful, as they can just as easily be lost in a botched duel or rival’s scheme.

Culture and the people

  • A greatly overhauled Culture system lies ready at your fingertips. Major new Cultural Traditions allow you to significantly change the way you play, from choosing the right benefits due to your realm’s terrain to giving your military new bonuses. Determine your heritage through Cultural Pillars or have your subjects learn new languages.
  • Create a truly dynamic melting pot through the new Hybridisation feature, mixing and matching the defining traits of your people into a unique cultural fusion. Become a great Bedouin conqueror who merges with freshly subjugated people or follow the adventurous Norse ruler who came to adopt the local Sri Lankan ways.
  • Witness your realm’s culture evolve with the new Divergence feature, with the hands of time subtly transform a single cultural strand into smaller sub-cultures. Shape it as you see fit, or sow the seeds of change, and watch as one monolithic culture grows into a collection of many different people.

Royal Court isn’t the only Crusader Kings 3 players are getting this year. Tours and Tournaments, an upcoming expansion, was announced a couple of weeks ago and is set to launch on PC this spring.

Following yesterday’s patch, Naughty Dog and developer Iron Galaxy have released The Last of Us update v1.0.1.6 for March 30, and this one brings in more much-needed technical refinements. This helps reduce the memory issue the game is suffering from along with a few other technical fixes.

Size: 346MB

A new hotfix for The Last of Us Part I is now live. This update addresses fixes that improve memory, performance, and more.

  • Decreased PSO cache size to reduce memory requirements and minimize Out of Memory crashes
  • Added additional diagnostics for developer tracking purposes
  • Increased animation streaming memory to improve performance during gameplay and cinematics

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC Info Coming in June

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC is set to arrive sometime this year, and more information on the upcoming expansion has been officially teased by CD Projekt Red. Details on Phantom Liberty are set to be released sometime in June, which is only a couple of months away.

While the announcement tweet doesn’t really tell much, it does imply that we probably aren’t going to be getting the DLC in April or May, and that a June release is unlikely given that the studio is announcing the marketing campaign at that time.

Here’s an official description of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty for those who haven’t heard of the DLC before:

Phantom Liberty is a spy-thriller expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. Become V, a cyberpunk for hire, and take on an impossible mission of espionage and survival. Use new skills, equip new weapons and tech, and plunge deep into a web of shattered loyalties and political power plays.

Announced during The Game Awards last year, Phantom Liberty is set to feature actor Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad, Sonic the Hedgehog 2) as Solomon Reed, an FBI agent who teams up with V on an espionage mission.

With CD Projekt Red announcing the info drop, we may get a release date in a couple of months, so keep your eyes peeled. There’s also a new update set for April 11 that will bring path tracing to PC.

Diablo 4 Beta Stats Reveal Over 61.5 Million Hours Played, Over 29 Billion Monsters Slain and More

Though the Diablo 4 beta has come to a close, it seems as though the game was a success by quite a few metrics, according to Blizzard’s data. The  Diablo 4 beta stats revealed that the game had over 61.5 million hours played across the beta weekends, with a record #1 viewership rank on Twitch when it was live.

Diablo 4 Beta Stats:

Here’s the full set of statistics if you’re interested:

  • Over 61.5 million hours played (equivalent of over 7,000 years) across both weekends. The most hours played in a Diablo Beta ever.
  • Diablo IV ranked #1 on Twitch during the Beta weekend as we saw a huge influx of players excited to dive into Sanctuary and were eager to share their adventure with viewers – who tuned in in droves.
  • Over 2.6 million Beta Wolf Pack Cosmetics were earned by players reaching level 20 which can take on average 2-4 hours to achieve.
  • Over 29 billion monsters were slaughtered. There are many vile and hellish creatures in the world of Diablo IV from demons to vampires, and players in our Beta didn’t hold back.
  • Over 46 million players were slain. The minions of Hell sometimes get the upper hand in the dark world of Diablo IV!
  • Sorceress rose to the top as the most popular class chosen surpassing Rogue, Druid, Barbarian, and Necromancer which came in second place.
  • The World Boss Ashava was slain by teams of players over 100,000 times. World Bosses are some of the most difficult enemies to defeat in Diablo IV, so it takes a lot of effort and coordination to overcome them.
  • In comparison, over 10 million players were slain by Ashava in her act of revenge.
  • While it was thought that no one player could dare stand up to this deadly World Boss alone, a single brave adventurer nearly conquered Ashava all on their own!
  • The bloodthirsty and iconic Diablo boss, The Butcher, was defeated over 570,000 times by players. We are impressed – The Butcher is extremely dangerous and cunning, and running into him is almost guaranteed death.
  • The Butcher got the last laugh though by slaying over 1.7 million players.

Some of the statistics shown here are fairly interesting, including 100,000 Ashava kills, as the world boss only spawned a set number of times over the beta weekends. Sorceress ended up at the top of players’ choice when it came to classes, with Necromancer as second despite it only being added during the second open beta weekend.

With lots of engagement from the Diablo community and beyond, a lot of eyes are on the ARPG as Blizzard attempts to fix the game’s beta issues before its launch. Diablo 4 releases on June 6 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Deceive Inc. Review – Among Spies

Old-fashioned spy movie buffs will get a kick out of Deceive Inc., a multiplayer game about deception and scanning your surroundings for any movement out of the ordinary. It’s Among Us meets No One Lives Forever and quite an achievement at that, conveying a chic cartoon atmosphere full of color and elegance. If you’re going undercover, at least do it in style and show the other spies who’s the real Austin Powers of the bunch – if only you could do it in more locations…

Spies Among Us

It’s impossible to avoid comparisons with the hit sus game Among Us, but The Ship might be a better reference. While everything steers you in the direction of a deceptive approach, there are no shackles keeping you in there; if you want to go to your objectives with guns blazing, no one is going to stop you… apart for the opposing teams who are striving for the same goal, but you get the idea.

You have eight agents in total to pick from, with three unlocked at the start, complete with plenty of cosmetic options, from skins to poses. Coming from different backgrounds and sporting varied arsenal, gadgetry, and a passive skill, the choice is open to your fondness for a specific weapon or device, but also to looks, because style has a say in the matter. From dual pistols to a sniper rifle or an automatic crossbow, there’s no shortage of means to effectively dispose of the rival agents and haphazard guards.

Deceive Inc. Review 2

In a somewhat unexpected twist, civilians can become casualties in the middle of intense firefights, but don’t think for a second that Deceive Inc. is a game about carnage – the stealthier you are, the better you’re likely to perform. That is, until you reach the extraction phase of the game, where players tend to flock to the surroundings of the extraction vehicle and engage in frantic and quite honestly underwhelming shootouts that seem to be a bane of the genre. But if you enjoy this type of gameplay, there’s a lot worse that you can do than Deceive Inc.

But I’m getting ahead of myself, as the matches start well before the extraction phase. Your goal, both as a solo agent or in a team of spies, is to blend in with the crowd, collect intel, extract the package, and exit the premises. Easier said than done, as any suspicious movement will capture the attention of your enemies and spark a fight to the death.

Going undercover isn’t a matter of wearing cool costumes and nifty wigs. In Deceive Inc., you get a full-on holographic cover tool that allows you to turn into any person and conceal your real look. This is how you will explore the locations without raising suspicion, unless you decide to go for a rushed approach that gives you away, even to the most clueless of players – running around, jumping from balconies, approaching intel objects, and the like.

Access to some rooms during the Insertion phase is limited not only by a required amount of intel that works as keys, but also by security level access. There are five security tiers that you must pay attention to, always having to enter rooms with an equivalent or higher level: civilian, staff, guard, technician, and VIP. Fail to find a suitable holographic cover and you’ll be challenged by guards who are very trigger happy.

A Slight Case of Repetition

Deceive Inc. Review

Firing your weapon will break disguise temporarily, exposing you as the sitting duck that you are. Luckily, cover will return a few seconds later, so you may get into a firefight with a rival agent or guard, run away, and get under the skin of another NPC. Your goal is to disable three terminals to open the vault and grab the package, making a run for it as the other agents are regularly pinged about your location, with chaos potentially ensuing.

That’s one of the issues with Deceive Inc., as this system often rewards camping and punishes players who have actively moved around and strived to fulfill the mission goals. It’s understandable and even recommended to take a discreet approach, as any spy should do, but being spotted by players who are doing nothing but scanning the environment can be frustrating; the same can be said about the chaotic extraction moments, which are too punishing and feel like they are out of a completely different game.

Gunplay isn’t entirely on point, feeling a bit light and failing to convey the feelings of high-tech weaponry, even if some of it fits on the zany spectrum. Just be sure that if you are looking for a game with great first-person shooter thrills, this isn’t the one.

Another issue is that we use our holographic cover in front of a crowd, and no one has any sort of reaction to the abrupt body switch. They keep going about their daily lives as if nothing happened, something that doesn’t happen when shots are fired, as they duck or run for safety. A minor niggle it may be, but it took me some time to adjust to it.

The maps are considerably vast and with plenty of scope for ambushes and even a little bit of parkour antics. Mostly beautiful in their bright colors and strong contrast, it’s a game that aims and succeeds at portraying a fictional era with ties to the age of hippies and flower power. On the downside, there are only four different environments, and the map rotation is flawed, as you can be placed in the same map several times in a row, paving the way for boredom to creep in.

Not Shaken, Nor Stirred

Deceive Inc. Review

Deceive Inc. isn’t merely the umpteenth Among Us clone, as it picks a setting that is prone to suspicious stealth action and camouflage and adds the gadgets and panache to it. Although there isn’t much to praise on the shooting aspect and the low number of maps is disappointing, this is a game that works when you find a group that plays by the rules. The more enthusiasm and immersion the better, and it is very enjoyable when that happens. But find a few ruthless players who will just try to botch your efforts and barely move, and things take a turn into frustration avenue.

Still, this is a clever and engaging game that deserves a shot if you enjoy the garish style and multiplayer shenanigans. Even though some repetition sinks in, the concept is fresh and deserves a look – to paraphrase what that legendary spy once said: Yeah, baby!

Score: 8/10

Pros

  • Stylish selection of agents and cool gadgets
  • A garish cartoon art style that sticks
  • Large and interesting maps
  • Fun gameplay loop…

Cons

  • … As long as everyone plays as expected
  • Gunplay is underwhelming
  • Only four maps
