Report: Piranha Bytes Facing Closure at the Hands of Embracer

Embracer is like that image of the Grim Reaper going door-to-door with its subsidiaries. According to a reputable German podcast’s latest episode, Piranha Bytes is reportedly facing closure due to a decision by Embracer, and most of their staff is already gone.

This news comes by way of a recent episode of The Pod, a well-known German podcast with strong ties to the gaming industry. Information shared within the podcast reveals that German studio Piranha Bytes, the team behind the fan-favorite Gothic series and the sci-fi RPG Elex series, is on the brink of closure.

While the episode is in German, Reddit user u/Jyllian_ summarized the biggest pieces of information in a post on the worldofgothic subreddit:

What is going on at Piranha Bytes? Are they in financial trouble?
byu/Jyllian_ inworldofgothic

According to the post, the closure process has been in action since November of last year. Embracer is cutting the studio for cost-saving purposes after their massive $2 billion deal fell through last May. Embracer reportedly doesn’t have much faith in Piranha Bytes’ next project being profitable, though they’re giving the team an opportunity to pitch themselves to other publishers. The hosts of the podcast episode are not very optimistic about the team succeeding, however.

The entirety of Piranha Bytes’ staff has also been laid off already, as members of The Pod have confirmed seeing the termination letter. What’s left is effectively a skeleton crew, people left over to look for a last lifeline before the studio shuts down for good. It’s a sad tale, one we’ve seen before.

German gaming news site GameStar has also confirmed these reports separately with their own reputable sources. According to them, the dismissal process for employees is not finished. Even so, all work on a new title has ceased entirely. They credit the German Dismissal Protection Act with the prolonging of the closing process, as companies are required to notify employees of termination well in advance of their actual end date.

What’s left to say about Embracer? In the last three years, they’ve climbed the ranks of most despised entities in the video game industry. Since their deal flopped, they’ve closed beloved studios like Volition and canceled anticipated projects like the TimeSplitters reboot. The studios they haven’t shut down have faced serious layoffs, including Crystal Dynamics and 3D Realms. Hundreds of livelihoods have been put at risk, all thanks to a massive deal made by people with no real connection to the developers involved. Corporate missteps have repeatedly stomped on the passion of the individuals behind well-loved titles.

We’ll be sure to update readers when we receive official confirmation of Piranha Bytes’ closure. For the time being, it seems increasingly clear that the studio is dead in the water through no fault of their own.

GOW Ragnarok Update 5.04 Released This January 18 (Update)

GOW Ragnarok update 5.04 has been released. It’s a small update, so don’t expect anything major from it outside of bug fixes. Here are the patch notes for today’s new GOW Ragnarok update.

GOW Ragnarok Update 5.04 Patch Notes | God of War Ragnarok New Update Patch Notes for Today:

Update: Santa Monica has released the official patch notes.

No official notes are available yet, but they should be shortly.

We can assume this patch is to resolve some bug fixes, specifically one that was brought up with the last update that prevented players from unlocking an item. Santa Monica Studios confirmed on X at the time that this issue was being investigated. That was a full month ago, so chances are high this update resolves that issue.

“Our team has confirmed that there is a bug preventing the Rond of Purification from being unlocked. We’ll continue to investigate the issue and appreciate your patience.”

We’ll be sure to let you know if we get any confirmation that this bug is fixed, as well as update the story with the full patch log.

Update: The official patch notes have been added in.

World: Rondo

※ The following features are available only in Rondo.

New Feature: Market

Rondo’s Markets are now officially open for business!

Gone are the days of merely picking things up from the ground for your needs. Rondo has evolved, offering you a collection of in-game items – that is, if your wallet allows. Shop smart in the world of Rondo, where your fortune can buy more than just items; it can buy choices that’ll change the fate of the match.

Collect BR Coins, purchase items at the Market, and achieve that win!

BR Coins

In-game currency exclusively used in the Markets, where you can purchase a wide range of in-game materials.

  • BR Coins can be collected through various methods:
    • As world-spawn items
    • As rewards for accomplishing In-Game Challenges
    • By taking down Pillar Guards
    • By selling your inventory items at the Market
  • Coins can be dropped to the ground.
  • Inventory weight: 0

Markets

Holds a diverse array of items, weaponry, and even a special vehicle. Transactions are made with BR Coins.

  • Markets come in three distinct types: Grade I, Grade II, Grade III. Each type has its own unique size and design.

  • Use the interaction key to open a page of shopping options, with each Market grade offering its own set of categories:
    • Grade I: Item Shop and Garage or Item Shop and Random Item
    • Grade II: Item Shop, Weapons Dealer, Random Item
    • Grade III: Item Shop, Weapons Dealer, Random Item
    • The higher the Market grade, players are greeted with higher quality items and a broader selection.
    • Each weapon bought from the Weapons Dealer comes with a suitable amount of ammunition.
  • Inventory items eligible to sell will have a BR Coin icon in the upper left corner.

  • Markets and Garages are marked on the map.
  • Any Market items purchased beyond your inventory capacity will drop to the ground.
  • A Market can be interacted with multiple times, but each Market holds limited stock.
  • There are certain conditions, like being knocked out, in a vehicle, prone, being carried, etc. under which you cannot interact with Markets.

Emergency Cover Flare

A throwable for on-demand defense.

  • Inventory slot: Throwables
  • Weight: 15
  • Upon use, red smoke signals the activation, emanating from the item.
  • When thrown, three sturdy Emergency Cover airdrops are deployed from the sky, which descend and land in close proximity to the flare’s location within a few seconds.
  • Emergency Cover airdrops can destroy bamboos and wooden fences upon impact. Players are also at risk of being knocked out or killed if one falls on them.
  • Emergency Cover airdrops are immune to weapon damage, but movable by vehicles and explosives.
  • The impact of Emergency Cover airdrops is capable of extinguishing flames from Molotovs and smoke from Smoke Grenades.
    • When a Smoke Grenade is already emitting smoke, the extinguished area will be replenished with smoke.
  • Emergency Cover Flares may not be activated when used in confined spaces.
  • Available at the Item Shop and also as a world spawn item.

Battle Ready Kit

A Market-exclusive heal & boost item available for purchase at the Item Shop.

  • Weight: 20
  • When used, it completely replenishes both your health and boost gauge after 8 seconds.
  • The Battle Ready Kit cannot be used using the usual shortcuts for heal/boost items.

Garage

Certain Grade I Markets come with an associated garage, holding the exclusive Pillar UAZ vehicle.

  • Once a player purchases the Garage option, an alert siren is triggered, signaling the opening of the associated garage. Players can then access the Pillar UAZ.
  • Each Garage option can be bought only once per Grade I Market. Once purchased, it will be marked to indicate its unavailability.

Pillar UAZ

The Market’s Garage exclusive vehicle.

  • Health: 2500
  • Max speed: Approximately 90km/h and 107km/h using boost.
  • Equipped with the trunk system.
  • The Pillar UAZ offers enhanced protection with its bulletproof windowsand sturdy tires.
    • Windows can be penetrated on Consoles (existing system for all vehicles).
  • Due to the bulletproof windows, players cannot fire from inside the vehicle.
  • Vehicle skins are not applicable to the Pillar UAZ.

Pillar Guards

Formidable protectors of Grade III Market locations. Don’t think you can quietly pass through their area!

  • Pillar Guards are stationed and regularly patrol the vicinity of Grade III Market locations to make sure that accessing high-quality merch remains a challenge.

Safe

A safe designed to safeguard valuable items.

  • Players can use the interaction key to unlock the safe and acquire Gold Bars.
    • Gold Bar inventory weight: 15
    • A Gold Bar can be traded for 1,000 BR Coins at the Market.
  • Safes are found in buildings across the map.

In-Game Challenges

You now have the opportunity to engage in In-Game Challenges and earn rewards in Rondo! Accomplish various objectives each match for a unique gameplay experience.

Challenges

  • A total of 3 challenges are given on the starting island and can be accomplished from the moment you land.
  • Challenges are displayed on the left side of the world map.
  • Challenges come in three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Rewards vary depending on the difficulty.
    • Players with a Survival Mastery level of 80 or lower will receive two additional Newbie challenges.
    • Challenges that require you to loot specific items can also be accomplished by purchasing the items from the Market.
  • Challenges are individual, implying that your progress is not shared with your party.
  • Challenge progress is indicated by a progress bar or numbers.
  • You can swap your challenges up to 3 times.
    • Completed challenges cannot be swapped.
  • Challenges cannot be accomplished in spectator mode.
    • However, if you return to the match through the Recall system, you can resume your challenges.
  • If a Survivor/Crafter Pass mission and an in-game challenge overlap, you can complete both at the same time.

Rewards

  • Obtainable rewards
    • BR Coins, heal and boost items, equipment, secondary/throwable weapons, scopes, attachments, etc.
  • Once you accomplish a challenge, the reward will be sent to your inventory.
    • If your inventory is full, the reward will be on hold and resent 10 seconds after a message regarding your full inventory.
    • If your inventory remains full upon resending, the reward will drop to the ground. The same applies when you’re in a vehicle.
    • Rewards are obtained the same way even when you are in the air, underwater, on Emergency Pickup, or knocked down.
    • You can receive BR Coin rewards even when your inventory is full.
  • If you obtain rewards of the following categories–equipment or secondary/throwable weapons–when those slots are empty, rewards will be auto-equipped.
    • If an equipment reward is of the same or higher level than your current one, it will automatically replace the existing gear. An equipment reward of a lower level will drop to the ground.
    • However, an equipped secondary weapon will not be replaced. Secondary weapon rewards will fall to the ground, while ammunition will be added to your inventory if space allows.
      • Secondary weapon rewards include a small amount of ammunition.
    • Whether attachments get auto-equipped or not depends on your settings.
  • All challenges, excluding Newbie challenges, have a chance to offer a Jackpot Reward, and those challenges will glow gold.
  • Rewards are only available in the current match.

EMP Zone

One day, a resounding bang echoed, leading to the formation of an overcurrent shield within Rondo. Take a bold step into the vast electromagnetic field that effectively disables most electronic devices within its reach—welcome to the EMP Zone.

  • Once you enter the EMP Zone…
    • The reticles of scopes will be disabled, including those of newly acquired scopes within the EMP zone.
    • All motor-based vehicles will shut down.
    • Markets, Blue Chip Transmitters, Blue Chip Towers, and Jammer Packs will be unavailable.
    • Most other electronic features will be deactivated.
  • Exceptions: C4, Stun Gun, Self-AED, BZ Grenade
  • An EMP Zone warning message along with its activation area on the world map will show up.
  • Will not be created after Phase 3.
  • Does not inflict damage to characters, terrain, buildings, etc.
  • Escalators that partially overlap with the EMP zone will also stop functioning.

Dev’s Comment: The EMP Zone is making its debut in Rondo, offering a solitary experience that cuts you off from modern civilization. This Rondo-exclusive zone has been designed through an analysis of existing zones, considering factors such as activation phases and locations, durations, sizes, impact on gameplay, and effect range. Try to lay off from depending too much on electronics once in a while for a more unique experience!

Spawn Changes

The following no longer spawn in Rondo.

  • SCAR-L
  • Deagle
  • R45
  • DP-28
  • PP-19 Bizon
  • Vector
  • Mosin Nagant
  • Quiver (Crossbow)
  • 3-wheeled motorcycles
  • Aquarail

Corresponding to these removals, the spawn rates for other valuables such as ARs, SMGs, SRs, LMGs, handguns, magazines, 2-wheeled motorcycles, and boats have increased.

World: Erangel

Traces leading to Rondo have vanished from Erangel.

Blizzard Zone & Sandstorm

Blizzard Zone

  • Frequency of occurrence has been reduced.
  • Duration has been reduced by 20%.
  • Impact is now limited to Phase 4, whereas its reach used to extend up to Phase 6.

Sandstorm

  • The general size has been reduced.
  • Sound has been slightly reduced.

Common Spec

  • No longer inflicts damage.

Dev’s Comment: The Blizzard Zone and Sandstorm were added to the game to diversify PUBG gameplay. However, as noted in PUBG Care Package Ep. 2, players experienced frustration due to these uncontrollable environmental elements, particularly in the late phases. As we prioritize providing an enjoyable gameplay experience, we’ve decided to make adjustments to the Blizzard Zone and Sandstorm based on your feedback. With these changes, we hope that players will be able to effectively leverage these environmental elements on the Battlegrounds.

Hero Adjustments

I. Justina Gu

Optimized the pulling effect that occurs when Justina Gu interrupts her dash and initiates a weapon move during the casting of [Shadowswipe] or [Shadowswipe: Blizzard].

1. Fixed an issue where the camera would oscillate when the player rapidly adjusted the viewing angle and switched the target during targeting.

2. The pulling effect of this move will only be activated when Justina Gu’s target is an enemy hit by [Shadowswipe] or [Shadowswipe: Blizzard]; if not, the move will not trigger the pulling effect and will simply auto-aim melee strikes toward the enemy.

//Developer’s Comment: After introducing the post-emergency-stop pulling effect for Justina Gu, we have observed an increase in players executing thrilling moves with Justina Gu. However, we also recognize that some seasoned players have had a less satisfactory experience due to changes in character control habits. To address this, we have implemented the above fine-tunings for better performance. Moreover, we are in the process of developing a setting that will allow players to choose whether to enable the post-emergency-stop pulling effect for Justina Gu. We will also continue to pay close attention to player feedback.

Weapon Adjustments

I. Heng Sword

1. Slightly reduced the knockback distance when a target is hit by a charged vertical strike.

2. Enhanced the melee correction for Straight Lunge and Lethal Jab.

3. Optimized the pre-input timing for Straight Lunge and Lethal Jab.

4. Slightly reduced the startup frames of follow-up horizontal strikes launched after Straight Lunge or Lethal Jab.

5. Reduced the window for interrupting the follow-up horizontal strikes launched after the Straight Lunge or Lethal Jab.

6. Reduced the window for interrupting the follow-up vertical strikes launched after the third stage of the vertical strike or Shadow Step.

7. Fixed an issue where the first strike of the charged vertical strikes would hit an airborne enemy but its second strike would miss the target.

8. Optimized animations of the second, third, and fourth stages of the vertical strike.

9. Optimized character animations when charging a new charged vertical strike after executing charged vertical strikes.

10. Optimized character animations when a successfully countering.

11. Optimized the sound effects for some moves.

Souljade Adjustments

I. Dual Halberds Souljade

A new Souljade, [Martial Art·Will-Form Hook], has been added to the game.

II. Heng Sword Souljade

1. The Focus effect of the second strike of [Rampage] has been changed from Blue Focus to Purple Focus.

2. The first strike of [Aurora Burst] now applies a silence effect upon hitting the target and extends the range of subsequent strikes.

III. Effect (Consumable) Souljades

The special effects of [Explosive Armor] have been optimized, and the uses have been adjusted to 1.

Out-game Adjustments

I. Free Heroes Adjustments

Matari has been replaced with Feria Shen on the Free Heroes list available for new accounts. Their positions on the hero selection page have also been exchanged.

Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil Releases Jan. 25, Here’s What to Expect From This Exorcism Horror Game

Mr. Skull Game Studio in collaboration with Brazilian publisher QUByte Interactive will be releasing Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil next week on January 25, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

Devil Inside Us is a horror game that has you controlling a 74-year old exorcist, and as one might expect, the game focuses on exorcism rather than zombies or other horror game villain stereotype. Check out the gameplay trailer alongside the game features.

Storyline:

Aughust Heylel, a priest gifted with mediumistic abilities and an exorcist acclaimed by the Vatican, finds himself plunged into a challenging journey when he recounts, in a letter, the most terrifying mission of his long life: the “Roots of Evil” case, which began in 1984.

His initial mission was to investigate a residence plagued by paranormal manifestations, but he soon realized that the problem was infinitely deeper than his initial predictions could grasp. This intriguing case has haunted Aughust for more than 30 years, and now the crucial moment has come to solve it.

Gameplay Details:

  • Explore, find items, notes and cursed objects
  • Control a 74-year-old priest with limited movement
  • Your mediumistic abilities lead you to unusual places, which guide you to solve the mystery.
  • Use your crucifix to exorcise cursed objects and demons.

This is a different take on a horror game, no? Let’s hope the gameplay can do the premise justice.

Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil releases Jan. 25 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Switch.

Rock Band 4 Last DLC to Be Released Jan. 25, Live Services Will Continue as Normal

After eight years, Harmonix will be releasing the last DLC for Rock Band 4 this January 25! Thankfully, this doesn’t mean anything is happening to live play and everything else.

In a new announcement, Haromnix’s Daniel Sussman looked back at the studio’s time in supporting Rock Band 4, and mentioned how the studio is hard at work over the last two years developing Fortnite Festival. For those who don’t know. Fortnite Festival brings rhythm action gaming to the Fortnite ecosystem for free, and support for Rock Band 4 instruments are coming to it soon.

As for the last bit of DLC, Sussman hasn’t revealed the songs in it yet, but did mention that the last two weeks will feature some “tear jerkers” that will sum up the studio’s feelings about this moment.

To date, Harmonix has nearly 3,000 songs as DLC, and well over 3,000 songs (if you include the game soundtracks). Don’t forget, while we are getting the Rock Band 4 last DLC this January 25, online play, Rival seasons, and the rest are going to be playable as normal.

Will we ever see a new Rock Band? I can’t say for sure, but maybe we’ll get another DLC pack some day.

Report: Far Cry Spin-Off Game Featuring Captain Laserhawk Rated by PEGI

A new Far Cry spin-off game may have just been leaked by PEGI, the European organization behind rating games. A game with the title Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior was rated PEGI-12 earlier today along with a brief description of what we might expect from the title.

For those unaware, Captain Laserhawk is the titular character from Ubisoft’s own Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix show on Netflix. Blood Dragon is a standalone expansion/spin-off of Far Cry 3, and it’s mostly laid dormant until Ubisoft breathed new life into it with the television show last year.

The Niji Warrior segment of the title is a reference to the Niji 6, a team of characters that appears in the Captain Laserhawk TV show. These characters are primarily a reference to Rainbow Six, seeing as how they’re all different colors of the rainbow and the word “Niji” translates to “rainbow” in Japanese. You can see those characters in a trailer from Netflix below:

You can see a screenshot of the PEGI rating below:

far cry spin-off

We can glean some information about the title from the rating’s description. Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior will apparently be a multiplayer PvP title in which players will fight in “laser deathmatches” to rack up the most eliminations. While characters will bleed when shot, their reactions to taking damage are apparently “unrealistic,” and players will break into pieces when they’re hit.

According to the PEGI rating, the game will also feature in-game purchases for cosmetics. This practice is exceedingly common in the modern age, especially for Ubisoft, so it’s not a surprise to see that included in this title. We don’t have any details on what sort of cosmetics will be included, though we imagine they’ll fit in line with the typical cyberware aesthetic of Captain Laserhawk or perhaps feature references to other Ubisoft titles as the show frequently features cameos and nods to the company’s extensive history.

This game hasn’t been announced or revealed by Ubisoft in any way, and there’s a chance it never comes out, so take it with a grain of salt. That being said, it’s unlikely that Ubisoft would go through the trouble of getting a product rated if they didn’t intend to release it, so there’s a good possibility that this one will see the light of day.

Another mainline Far Cry game is also in the works over at Ubisoft, though that project’s mostly under wraps. We’ll be sure to let our readers know if we learn any more about Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior.

Generation Zero Update 1.43 Stomps Out for Crash Fixes This Jan. 17

Generation Zero update 1.43 has been released by Avalanche Studios, and this is primarily for crash fixes, and syncs the PlayStation version to the other platforms. Read on for what’s new in the Generation Zero new update patch notes for January 17.

Generation Zero Update 1.43 Patch Notes | Generation Zero Jan. 17 Patch Notes:

Lately, we’ve seen an influx of reports of “random crashes” during gameplay. Well, we’ve dedicated one of our amazing programmers, Georgios, to look at the most prevalent ones. This patch is a culmination of his efforts to improve game stability and performance.

This Hotfix contains crash fixes related to:

  • Shock ammo used in multiplayer
  • HEAT ammo used in multiplayer
  • Explosions
  • Firebird balloons
  • Machine pathfinding
  • Vehicles despawning
  • Vehicle driving
  • Interacting with the inventory very fast
  • Too many sounds happening at the same time
  • Base assault completions
  • Mission completions
  • Multiplayer disconnects
  • Closing the game

Furthermore, we fixed consistently appearing crashes during normal gameplay on Xbox and PS4.

As a cherry on top of the mound of squashed bugs, we removed a bug where players couldn’t interact with the respawn map if they died while their pause menu was open.

If you were experiencing frequent and “random” crashes in GZ during the last couple of updates, we highly encourage you to check back in now!
Please let us know about any persisting crash issues and if possible, include reproduction steps and / or videos and screenshots if you can. It will help us weed out more crashes in the future.
We are dedicated to making Generation Zero a smooth experience for everyone, no matter what platform you’re playing on.

As for the 60 frames-per-second patch for the PS5, it is in the “pipeline” and more information will be shared “very soon” according to the studio. Once we know more about that, we’ll let our readers know.

GTA 6 Trailer Recreated by Hyundai WRC Team

There have been a lot of recreation trailers out there for Grand Theft Auto 6 (recently with GTA 5), but I think we’ve finally found the best one, as the Hyundai WRC Team has recreated the GTA 6 in live-action, getting a little creative with some of the wilder moments in the trailer.

GTA 6 Trailer Recreated by Hyundai WRC Team

Whoever came up with this idea, please give them a raise! Great marketing, and in all, good fun. We’re sure they won’t be the last to do this, and with Super Bowl LVIII being next month, we’re sure plenty of others will try to play off the GTA 6 marketing with their own commercials. I mean, it’s one of the most-watched trailers online; I don’t see it not impacting marketing.

WWE 2K24 Officially Announced, Reveal Next Week

2K Games have officially announced WWE 2K24, with its full reveal happening next week.

In an update seen across all their social media, WWE games have updated their profile picture, now sporting the logo for WWE 2K24. This would mark the first time the title was officially announced outside of it being mentioned that a new one was being worked on.

That’s not the only news we have for you either, as WWE Games also revealed via a bio and banner update that the reveal of WWE 2K24 will be coming Monday, January 22, 2024. That’s next week!

WWE 2k23 Banner

We don’t have any further information beyond that, though we are expecting to get a cover reveal. Just who exactly might be on that cover is anyone’s guess, but our bet is on Cody Rhodes or Roman Reigns. CM Punk? He’s a slim chance, but he’s definitely a possibility.

Now the bigger question is, what kind of improvements will we see in this year’s iteration, and will it still be cross-gen? Hopefully, they will address some of the issues we highlighted in our WWE 2K23 review. I guess we’ll find out real soon!

In the meantime, who do you hope is featured on this year’s WWE 2K game cover?
