ARC Raiders PC Closed Alpha Begins June 29; New Trailer Released

After the initial announcement last month, Embark Studios has announced that ARC Raiders‘ PC closed alpha will begin on June 29 and run till July 3, with signups for the alpha still open. A new trailer composed out of a mix of cinematics and gameplay has also been released to reflect the game’s new PvPvE direction.

Watch the ARC Raiders closed alpha trailer below:

Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders officially transitioned into a PvPvE shooter last month, though the developer chose to not showcase any new gameplay footage of the current state of the game. The game’s story was described then as follows:

People have fled to the underground colony of Speranza, seeking supplies to survive, and shelter from the machines. Demand for resources is at an all-time high. But getting those resources is a risky job, and it isn’t for everyone. But it is a job for you. That’s why you’ve enlisted as a Raider, scavenging for vital supplies that are scattered across the 5landscape. Everything from leftovers from yesterday’s run-in with ARC to the unlikely remains of a pinball machine. Out there, the stakes are high, and you will have to fight for your loot. Lethal ARC machines roam the surface. And there are no rules in Calabretta, so beware of other Raiders. With the traders in Speranza, trust is hard-earned and easily lost. You need to earn your keep. So don’t come back from a quest empty-handed. When you see another Raider chased by a swarm of ARC drones, do you go in for the kill? Do you lend a helping hand? Or do you hold back and feast on the valuable remains?

Embark Studios also announced a PC closed alpha test for the game that would be held under an NDA. That closed alpha test can be signed up for here, and will run from June 29 till July 3 CET. A release date for the game has still not been announced, though it is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PSN Page Now Up, Confirms New Explorable Location

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s PSN Page confirms that the game will include a new location in New York as one of the game’s explorable areas. The description cites Coney Island, the city’s amusement park and beach hub, among other areas in Brooklyn and Queens.

Here’s the full description via the game’s PlayStation Store page:

Spider-Men Peter Parker and Miles Morales face the ultimate test of strength inside and outside the mask as they fight to save the city, each other and the ones they love, from the monstrous Venom and the dangerous new symbiote threat.

Explore an expansive Marvel’s New York with faster web-swinging and the all-new Web Wings, quickly switching between Peter and Miles to experience different stories, epic new abilities and high-tech gear.

Wield Peter’s symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric powers in battle against new and iconic Marvel Super Villains – including an original take on a symbiote-infused Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and more from the Marvel Rogues’ Gallery.

Feel the true power of Spider-Man in your hands!
– Haptic feedback: experience the full force of Peter’s and Miles’ new abilities at your fingertips with responsive vibrations.

– Stunning visuals: explore beautifully vibrant new environments and locations, including Brooklyn and Queens, Coney Island, and more.

Coney Island is a popular spot in New York, and it actually appeared in the 2017 MCU film, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” with Peter Parker taking on the villain Vulture as part of the film’s climax. It’s unclear as to what players will be able to do at Coney Island, though confirmation of the district as an explorable zone means more places to explore in the sequel.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches this October 20 on the PS5.

Final Fantasy 16 Discs Being Sold Ahead of Street Date, Be Wary of Spoilers

While Final Fantasy 16 (Final Fantasy XVI) won’t officially be released until June 22, it seems that some players have managed to grab a copy ahead of the planned launch date. Images of Final Fantasy 16 discs have been uploaded to social media, and that means the possibility of early spoilers.

An image of a Final Fantasy 16 physical copy was posted on a ResetEra thread about the game:

final fantasy 16 physical copy 1

The cover art is one we’ve already seen before, featuring the protagonist, Clive, in the background as his younger brother Joshua is surrounded by flames in front of him. The Eikon Ifrit can also be seen behind Clive.

Another image uploaded by CivilianGosu on Reddit reveals the contents of the case:

We see the disc for Final Fantasy 16, of course, as well as the uploader’s dog staring from behind the case, but what’s really worth mentioning is the Final Fantasy 14 leaflet on the left. While we don’t get to see the text in full, it likely reads “Download the free trial from the PlayStation Store.” This ad placement may seem odd to some, but FF16 and FF14 were both created by the same team, Creative Business Unit III. Key figures in the FF14 dev team were also part of FF16’s development, including Naoki Yoshida as Producer, Koji Fox as Localization Director, and Masayoshi Soken as the game’s composer.

As some players are likely playing through FF16’s story right now, spoilers featuring gameplay footage and story elements may crop up on social media in the coming days, so keep that in mind as you scroll through your feed. Final Fantasy 16 launches this June 22 on the PS5.

Pro Cycling Manager 2023 Review – Pedaling on the Backstage

Pro Cycling Manager 2023 is the companion management game to Tour de France 2023, the simulation-versed sibling of the pair. Cyanide’s recent release is another in-depth game showcasing the harsh behind the scenes of a cycling career, with all the major decisions out of the bicycle and into your hands, even if you also have the means to influence the performance of your riders during the races. With a back-to-back yearly release and a colossal database of riders and circuits, is Pro Cycling Manager 2023 adding significant changes to the previous edition?

Team Tactics

Every fan of cycling knows how difficult it is to find a game that translates the experience in a faithful way, but Cyanide has proven throughout the years that it has manifest respect for the sport, going to great lengths to deliver a deep and engaging outing, both in its simulation and management categories. Pro Cycling Manager 2023 again comes bolstered by a considerable collection of teams and stages, resulting in hundreds of hours of fiddling for the most devoted fans.

Official data boasts 260 races and 80 professional teams, so you can judge the amount of work that went into rendering all those circuits and coming up with reliable statistics for each rider, even if not all of these are officially licensed. With attributes specific to circuit stages, physical abilities, and a lot more details under the hood contributing to the performance of each rider, even if slightly affected by your choices, it’s easy to see that Pro Cycling Manager 2023 has a lot going on and is great for devouring hours of any afficionado’s time.

Pro Cycling Manager 2023 Review

There are two main modes to pick from: Career and Pro Cyclist. The former is a detailed, thorough experience that can be summarized into off-track management and race segment. You can select the training focus and the coach for each rider, deal with countless types of injuries and debilitating illnesses, even with sinusitis playing a part, and do your best to maintain the sponsor’s confidence, maybe even getting a nice budget increase for your good performance. There’s a commendable amount of micro-management for those who like to tweak all kinds of fundamentals, including establishing a race calendar for every rider, their fitness goals, and a lot more.

When you go to the track, there are some interesting actions to affect your riders in key moments. You shouldn’t expect to watch every race unfold at normal speed, as the big choices come in specific moments that every fan will know how to identify. You can order your riders to attack, maintain position, manage their overall effort, request one to serve as wind protection for a more skilled teammate, or task the weaker riders with the ungrateful job of fetching water bottles for the rest of the team. When the time comes, a sprint attack is crucial to score those points and secure the top spots.

The improved Pro Cyclist mode is about creating a rookie rider who will be your persona throughout the game, shooting for glory, but also worrying about training schedules and growing your experience points by reaching objectives established by your manager. You start by selecting your nationality, something that affects the list of teams within your grasp, and then you must perform according to expectations if you wish to renew your contract later in the season. Interestingly, you get these prompts from your manager where you pick a reply and it affects some of your stats, as if a short cycling-themed pop quiz. During the race you are given some objectives, such as working at the head of the group for some kilometers, earning an evaluation for your effort at the end.

New Year, Same Tour

Pro Cycling Manager 2023 Review

The issue with Pro Cycling Manager 2023 is that it doesn’t feel much different from the previous outings. The exact same was said about Tour de France 2023, and again it rings true here, feeling like a solid, interesting, and deep game for enthusiasts that are just about discovering the series.

Otherwise, the improvements to energy management and artificial intelligence may seem negligible or hard to pinpoint, the athletes all look the same apart from their equipment, and there are visible bugs during the race, such as riders sliding through each other as the game suddenly realized they should find another route, with no concern for collisions or logic.

Pro Cycling Manager 2023 may be described as a polarizing game. Examined in isolation, it stands out as a convincing management game, with all the content and options that you could hope for, even if some bugs rear their ugly heads and the outdated graphics may seem rough. However, considering the lack of innovation, it’s hard to see it as the evolution that would make fans jump at the opportunity of getting into this coveted manager role.

Score: 7/10

Pros:

  • A deep and demanding management game
  • Interesting mechanics pre- and during races

Cons:

  • No considerable innovations
  • Graphics are showing their age

Star Ocean: The Second Story Remake Leaked by Square Enix as Official Logo Surfaces

A remake for Square Enix’s action RPG, Star Ocean: The Second Story, has just been leaked, and by the company itself no less. The existence of the Star Ocean: The Second Story remake was revealed through an image found on the official Square Enix website, featuring the logo of the supposed remake, aptly titled “Star Ocean: The Second Story R.”

Here’s the logo in question:

The image has since been taken down (you can find the now-defunct link here), but not before it was saved and then shared across social media.

It’s worth noting that the original sequel technically already received a remake in “Star Ocean: Second Evolution” back in 2008. Second Evolution was originally made available for PSP but was also released exclusively in Japan in 2015 for PS4 and PS Vita. Why the remake is named “The Second Story R” instead of “Second Evolution R” is anyone’s guess.

We don’t really know anything else about The Second Story R just yet as only its logo has leaked thus far. Still, the confirmation of a remake for the sequel is already good news for fans of the series. Once we learn more about this upcoming remake, we’ll keep you posted.

Diablo 4 World Tier 5 and New Gem Rarity Levels Unearthed by Datamine

If you thought Diablo 4 was tough enough, it looks like Blizzard has even more challenging content in store for players. A recent datamine has revealed the existence of Diablo 4 World Tier 5, with new gem rarities to help players gear up for the more difficult content planned ahead.

The datamine, which was posted by DataMineARPG, showcases official artwork for the World Tier 5 banner as well as the higher-level gem rarities. Here’s a look at both:

According to the DataMineARPG, World Tier 5 will likely be unlocked via the Capstone Dungeon in Fractured Peaks, though not much is known about the new tier other than that. As for the gems, rarity levels 6, 7, and 8 have been discovered. While Level 6 doesn’t have a concrete name just yet, Level 7 is named “Magnificent” whereas Level 8 is named “Perfect.” It’s worth mentioning that Perfect gems are in Diablo 2 as well, with Perfect being the highest possible rarity for gems. Based on the values of stats in current gem rarity levels, DataMineARPG also compiled estimated values for Levels 6, 7, and 8. You can find all the numbers in the dataminer’s Ko-fi post here.

As World Tier 5 and the new gem rarity levels are still works-in-progress, it’s unlikely that we’ll hear anything official anytime soon. That said, Blizzard did confirm that there are two expansions for the game brewing; perhaps this new World Tier will see the light of day once the first expansion is released.

Same as with any datamine, treat this one with a grain of salt until confirmed or denied by Blizzard.

Halo Infinite Infection Rules and Details Released; Here’s What You Need to Know

Halo Infinite is bringing back the fan-favorite Infection mode in Season 4, with the mode getting a visual touch-up relating to events from Season 3. 343 Industries has also revealed the rules for Halo Infinite’s Infection for those not familiar with the mode.

Here are the rules for Infection:

  • Infection is a round-based mode where one team (Infected) converts enemy players (Survivors) to their team upon killing them
  • Each round, a limited number of players are selected to be Infected – these are Alpha Infected, and the Survivors they kill are converted to Beta Infected
  • Survivors start out with limited supplies and will need to acquire additional weapons, equipment, and ammunition from the map
  • The goal is for the Infected to eliminate all Survivors. The last Survivor (the Last Spartan Standing) will have special traits applied to them (such as Overshield and unlimited ammo), but a nav-point will reveal their location to all Infected

Infection in the Halo series takes on different forms throughout its various games, with Halo Infinite involving Iratus, the Banished AI, as the source of the “infection.” Iratus takes over a Spartan’s armor, giving them a red, glowing mask above their helmet. Alpha Infected (players who start the game as Infected) will also have even more visual flair to indicate their status compared to Beta Infected (players who turned from Survivors into Infected).

You can read more about Halo Infinite’s rendition of Infection, as well as the history of the game mode, in the official blog post here. Infection launches alongside Season 4 of Halo Infinite on June 20.

Alan Wake 2 Game Length Set at Around 20 Hours; Alan in “Better Shape” to Dodge Attacks

Alan Wake 2’s game length sits at around 20 hours to complete, according to a recent interview with Remedy Entertainment. It will also feature a more physically fit Alan that’s “in a bit better shape” than the previous game, which could improve how he dodges attacks in the sequel.

The interview was held by Thomas Puha, Communications Director at the game studio. While only briefly mentioned, Puha stated that the game “currently” takes 20 hours to finish:

With the two intertwined campaigns, can you discuss roughly how long Alan Wake 2 will take to complete?

It depends on your skills, but currently (and the game is not quite done yet because a lot of the content is still going in), we’re looking at over 20 hours.

It’s worth stressing that the 20-hour estimate is based on “current” content, and with more to be added as development progresses, it may end up taking longer to finish upon release.

Puha also talked briefly about dodging in Alan Wake 2, and how he hopes that it now feels “a lot better” than the previous game.

Does the dodging work the same as in the first Alan Wake, or is it going to feel different?

Hopefully, it’ll feel a lot better. But yeah, it does work the same way, though the good thing is that Alan isn’t out of breath constantly, so he’s in a bit better shape. Of course, being an FBI agent, Saga is pretty handy with combat.

While the statement is quite vague, it does confirm that dodging works just like it does in the original Alan Wake game, albeit with a more physically fit Alan.

Alan Wake 2 creeps out this October 17, 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

“Absurd Ventures:” New Media Company by Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Unveiled

Since leaving Rockstar Games in 2020, gaming industry legend Dan Houser has been kept – for the most part – mum about his upcoming projects. That has changed today: following a 2021 sighting of its registration details, Houser’s new media company “Absurd Ventures” has officially been revealed to the world today. The studio, headquartered in Santa Monica is seeking to create and tell stories “without regard to medium,” though no specific projects have been revealed as of yet.

The studio bears the characteristic markings of the Houser mind, described satirically as “an American institution everyone can hate” and its retro website putting sarcastic commentary on dystopian consumerism and capitalist disingenuity front and center. Xbox First-Party Studios No Longer Making New Xbox One Games, Says Matt Booty

At the recent Xbox showcases, the absence of new game announcements for the Xbox One from first-party developers turned heads amongst the community. Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty has now addressed the exclusion, revealing to the disappointment of Xbox One gamers that first-party developers will no longer be porting their upcoming games to the console. Support for existing Xbox One games like Minecraft will continue, however, and those on the previous generation of Xbox will be able to continue playing Series X|S games through the cloud.

Development cycles for AAA titles are “four and five and six years” now, said Booty, and that necessitates leaving behind the Xbox One’s dated hardware in order to deliver the best experiences possible with regards to projects that are currently in development. As such, Xbox’s first-party developers will no longer be developing Xbox One versions of their upcoming games, a decision that showed through the absence of any Xbox One version announcements for titles like Avowed, Fable, and Hellblade II at the Xbox Games Showcase.

Xbox plans to cater to Xbox One owners going forward through Xbox Cloud Gaming, through which players can continue playing the latest and greatest first-party titles that would otherwise be exclusive to Series X|S consoles. As for titles like Minecraft that maintain a presence on Xbox One and are regularly updated, their last-gen versions will continue to receive updates and support.

What do you feel about this decision? Should the Xbox One still receive first-party love or is it time to upgrade for those still sticking to it? Let us know in the comments below.

Layers of Fear Review – A Canvas of Scares

Layers of Fear originally released in 2016 on the last generation of consoles. It has been given new life in the form of something of a remake, and we spent some time running through the houses of horror on the PS5 version to render our verdict. Is this more than just a fresh coat of ray-tracing paint and improved textures? Let’s find out.

Improved Lighting and Graphics

The Unreal Engine 5 runs the show in Layers of Fear. This means we get such features as HDR and 4K, but more importantly ray-tracing and the new Lumen lighting technology. When playing on a compatible display, it means there’s a ton of detail but also a wide range of contrasting colors and light levels. Objects cast more realistic shadows, and a bright light in a dark room can get so bright it might actually start to hurt your eyes. Naturally, this all depends upon what sort of display you’re playing on, but no matter what, things are certainly improved when compared to the original release. It’s immediately reminiscent of the infamous teaser/demo that released almost a decade ago: P.T., but with much better graphics.

There are no traditional loading screens, with doors and hallways acting as buffers instead. The main characters don’t really run, either, as pressing L3 toggles between two slightly different walking speeds. Layers of Fear is something of a walking simulator, really, where the main action usually involves opening or closing a door, picking up a phone, collecting a memento, or some other simple action. There’s no fighting enemies besides simply making them disappear for a little bit.

Downright Depressing Details

Indeed, Layers of Fear has a handful of different stories to tell, and whether and how often you choose to interact with those stories dictates which paths the characters take. They are quite dark in content, with trauma, death, insanity, self-harm, and other morose topics utilized at length. Much of the events of the story cannot be changed, either. You’re simply along for the ride, though things aren’t quite as set in stone as, say, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture.

All stories are fully-voiced, with a large chunk of things coming from voiceovers that play when you pick up an item. Most of the acting is good, though occasionally some that read newpaper articles almost sound like computer-generated readouts due to their stilted delivery. Still, the extra effort of recording for basically every holdable item is appreciated.

Layers of Fear is a first-person game, but it’s not action-heavy, nor is there any real combat to speak of. You play as one of a couple of characters, including a new-for-this-entry character known as The Writer, who won a writing contest and was awarded a stay in a supposedly haunted lighthouse, where she is tasked with writing a book as she learns the stories of others in the previous games. Her story ties everything together, slowly but surely. Layers of Fear has you mostly just walking through your environment, and occasionally picking things up, or moving them slightly to trigger something to happen. In the case of The Painter, who is the star of the first story, he has a kerosene lamp which can be used to banish some dark miasma, which uncovers key items to the story. The DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers are used here, along with interacting with certain heavier objects such as elevator doors. The controller speaker is also utilized when key items are used, and the controller vibrates with each step you take, while the LEDs also light up in various colors depending on your character’s sanity. These are nice inclusions, even if they are not a central focus to the game’s interactivity.

Slow Speed, Slower Walking

The biggest issue some players may face is in its slow, plodding pace. The story takes a while to get anywhere substantial, and you have to be quite observant to ensure you don’t miss picking up a key object. Some sections of the game also require you to look in a certain direction in order to trigger an event, despite the room you’re in not having any indicators that you need to look in that direction. This can be a little frustrating from time to time, but I suppose it’s better than a horror game that holds your hand and reminds you that you are playing a game. Death is also typically meaningless in terms of progress lost – you usually wake up in the starting area, and after opening a door or two are right back where you were last knocked out.

Layers of Fear does not rely on jump scares often, instead using its excellent audio design to instill a nearly constant sense of dread as you play. While this is apparent no matter how you play, those feelings get ramped up if you play with headphones, something the developer recommends each time you freshly boot up the game. Binaural audio is utilized, which simply means extra depth can be heard when playing with headphones, and it can be easier to tell from which direction sound effects are coming. It also means the many whispering voices, slight floorboard creaks, or occasional rat scurry can sound as though it is happening just over your shoulder. This can easily give you the creeps and a good dose of involuntary goosebumps. If you’re playing with others watching in the same room, which would be understandable if you don’t want to play alone, then perhaps a good surround sound system can simulate the creepy effects if it is turned up to a high enough volume.

All Layers of Fear in One Game

With multiple stories to play through encompassing all Layers of Fear games and DLC to date, and each of them lasting a couple of hours apiece, some players will be able to see all there is to see in Layers of Fear in one weekend, but most will probably space it out due to the intensity of the sound effects. There are also multiple endings, thus adding some more replayability to an otherwise linear game. Whether or not it’s worth it to play through again depends on how much enjoyment you got out of the basics of the game and its slow, methodical approach to storytelling, which admittedly isn’t for everybody.

Layers of Fear on the PS5 is the best-looking, best-sounding, and best-performing console version of the game yet. Playing with headphones is a must for the biggest scares, though many of the thrills are psychological rather than jump-based. Packed full of four different stories all interwoven to varying degrees, there is also a good deal of content to play through. Combined with multiple endings, Layers of Fear represents a great value for fans of horror games.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • Improved graphics, great lighting
  • Multiple stories with multiple endings
  • Great audio design

Cons:

  • Very slow, plodding story
  • Occasionally frustrating rooms with no cues with what to do next
