Nintendo Switch Update 20.1.1 Fixes Software Errors

[summaraize]

With  just a few days to go before the Switch 2 is out, Nintendo is hard at work on making sure the original Switch syncs up. Today, the company released the Switch update 20.1.1 file download, and this is a small patch that fixes a major issues.

Last week, the company released a new firmware update that introduced a new Switch Online start-up sound. Unfortunately, that also brought in issues as well.

Switch System Update for June 2 Fixes Games Not Starting Bug

Nintendo Switch system Update 18.0.0

Here’s what’s new per Nintendo:

Ver. 20.1.1 (Released June 2, 2025)

  • Fixed an issue where some software would not start after updating to system version 20.1.0.

Performing the system update

In most situations, the Nintendo Switch will automatically download the most recent system update while it is connected online. You can verify your current menu version and manually start the update from the System Settings menu if necessary.

That’s about it. Given we are about to get the new version of the console, I’m not expecting a lot of updates to be released outside of stability and performance improvements. If we spot any new changes or new technical fixes from this patch, we’ll update the article with more info./

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, and you can check its launch lineup to see if there’s something that interests you.

Report: Resident Evil 9 to Be Revealed This Week

[summaraize]

Update: As expected, Capcom has unveiled “Resident Evil Requiem” and it features a new protagonist.

While Capcom has confirmed the next entry in the Resident Evil franchise (which we’ll call Resident Evil 9, given Capcom hasn’t given it a proper title yet) is in development, there’s literally zero info about it.

That should be changing this week, as MP1st has learned that the game will be revealed this coming week!

Resident Evil 9 Will Finally Surface

Resident Evil 9 Teased

Earlier today, YouTube channel Screenfire Gaming mentioned that Resident Evil 9 will be revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 6. In German, the channel said (via machine translation), “The following information is of course provided without guarantee, as I have no idea if anything will change here or what it even looks like, but… Oh, screw it. We’ll see the first trailer for Resident Evil 9 at the Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025, with a targeted release in the first quarter of 2026. I suspect it will be at the end of March for the 30th anniversary, because Capcom mentioned in their investor report that they don’t expect any significant sales increase by then (Q1). That’s why it has to be around the end of March, and yes, it fits well with the anniversary of the series.”

We here at MP1st were also given confirmation by someone familiar with what’s about to happen later this week, and were told that yes, the next Residesnt Evil game (they are unsure if it will be titled Resident Evil 9) will be unveiled this week. Our source cannot corroborate on the release window, though. For now, it’s assumed RE9 will be revealed at Summer Game Fest’s kick off on June 6, unless there’s another show Capcom might unveil the game at.

At the very least, Resident Evil fans will finally have something to look forward to after all this time waiting for a new Resident Evil game to be released.

The news we’ve heard about Resident Evil 9 has mostly been rumors, which, as we all know, could either be outdated info or flat-out fabricated.

Elden Ring Nightreign Down for Server Maintenance and Patch v1.01.1 Roll Out on June 2

[summarize]

The first maintenance period for Elden Ring Nightreign since it launched is now live on June 2! If you’re wondering why you cannot connect to the servers, this is the reason why.

FromSoftware is conducting maintenance in order to release patrch 1.01.1 on all platforms, which we’re expecting to bring in various fixes to a few technical issues the game is suffering from.

Elden Ring Nightreign Servers Down on June 2

Per the announcement from FromSoftware, the maintenance starts at 1 am PDT/4 am EDT/10 am CEST/5 pm JST/4 pm HKT. Expect this to last for last least three hours on all platforms, which means players can expect the servers to be back up at 4 am PDT/7 am EDT/1 pm CEST/8 pm JUST/7 pm HKT.

Some of the bugs we’re expecting to be fixed include:

  • Matchmaking issues
  • Shifting Earths bugged
  • Framerate drops

While there’s no guarantee that all the issues will be fixed, we’re at least hoping for a matchmaking resolution since that’s the biggest problem plaguing players right now.

While we’ll see version 1.01.1 release today, FromSoftware has also promised patch version 1.02 will be out this week, which will make solo runs a tad easier.

If you’ve yet to try the game, read our in-depth review to see why it’s worth a play. Our own Jimmy Lara was quite impressed by FromSoftware’s latest title and said, “Nightreign isn’t merely a multiplayer spin-off; it’s a testament to FromSoftware’s ability to innovate while fiercely guarding the essence of what makes a Souls game so compelling.”

Update: Patch notes for the game are now out.

No More Outriders 2? People Can Fly and Square Enix Game Cancelled

[summaraize]

Those hoping to see a sequel to 2021’s non-live service looter shooter, Outriders, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon, as the developer behind the game has just cancelled its game with publisher Square Enix.

People Can Fly. the studio behind Painkiller, Bullestorm, has announced they have cancelled two projects and are even laying people off.

People Can Fly Ends Project With Square Enix

People Can Fly announced the project cancellation and layoffs on the studio’s official Twitter/X account today from studio CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski.

Today we made a very difficult decision to suspend the development of project Gemini and project Bifrost – the relevant current reports have been released to the market.

The suspension of the Gemini project is a consequence of the fact that the Publisher has not presented us with a draft of the subsequent content rider to the Publishing Agreement covering the terms and conditions of further milestones on project Gemini and the lack of communication from the Publisher as to its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project.

Project Bifrost was suspended due to the above and the analysis of the Group’s cash flow, which showed a lack of prospects for securing organizational resources and funds necessary to continue the production and release of this project.

As a result, we have to significantly regroup as a studio and scale down our teams, which hurts the most.

We wish to express our deepest regret and sadness over how these events have unfolded and our sincere gratitude for everyone’s contribution up to this point.

Project Gemini is People Can Fly’s game in development with Square Enix. While that wasn’t confirmed to be Outriders 2, the title seems to be the most plausible thing the studio was working on for the publisher. As for Project Bifrost, it’s a VR game, and details on it have been light.

Since Outriders’ release, People Can Fly pushed out one major expansion three years ago, which we reviewed in a positive light. What does this mean for Outriders IP? Probably that it’s dead — unless Square Enix tasks it to another developer.

If you’ve yet to play the looter shooter, it’s usually on sale, and it’s worth the romp. Our review of the base game was overwhelmingly positive, awarding it a 9/10 and highlighting the gunplay and loot grind as some of its key strengths.

People Can Fly is known to be helping development on Gears of War: E-Day with The Coalition, and it’s due for on the Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Report: Inside Ubisoft’s Project Renaissance, a Cancelled Minecraft-Like Voxel Game

Like many other big developers in the current landscape, Ubisoft is undergoing significant restructuring, largely driven by persistent financial challenges that have plagued the company for some time. Given this, it is understandable that they have been canceling a wide array of games, such as The Division: Heartland, XDefiant, and Project Q.

The cancelled project we’ll explore here, however, is one that never even got to be officially announced, though it might yet find new life in a different form. We’re referring to “Project Renaissance.”

The existence of this project was first revealed in 2023 through a report by Kotaku, describing it as a voxel-based game with “shades of Minecraft” that had been in development for four years at Ubisoft Montreal. The next time we would hear about this game would be in an Insider Gaming report from November last year, where a project with similar characteristics to Renaissance was said to have been canceled. This cancellation is said to have paved the way for another project, codenamed Alterra, which is reportedly inspired by Animal Crossing and also utilizes this voxel generation technology.

Returning to Renaissance, sources close to its development have shared insights with us into what the game might have been like. We understand that Project Renaissance was envisioned as a platform featuring diverse user-created experiences. These worlds would have been constructed from blocks of various materials, akin to Minecraft, including elements like metal, snow, and lava, alongside fictional materials such as “thermidium.”

A Look Into the Cubic Worlds of Project Renaissance

Concept art provided to us showcases what the player avatars might look like—realistic, non-stylized human figures (contrary to what one might expect when compared to Minecraft). These avatars are depicted wearing special attire and using gun-like tools that appear to be designed for constructing environments.

The worlds could have been shared under different categories based on their environment type, such as caverns, caves, and mountains, as well as additional tags specifying gameplay modes like “Race to Escape”. Some categories were also determined by the primary materials composing the worlds.

As evident in the illustrations, Minecraft’s influence on the project is undeniable. However, we could say that elements reminiscent of Fortnite are also present in the project, as we have seen in other pics showcasing menus similar to Fortnite. This highlights another instance of the industry attempting to replicate that title’s massive success.

According to the reports from Kotaku and Insider Gaming, we estimate that the game was ultimately canceled between February and May 2023. This was followed by the departure of Jean Guesdon from the studio, who was reported to be the project’s creative director and who had previously worked on several titles in the Assassin’s Creed series.

Now, if we hope to see anything from its spiritual successor, Alterra, we’ll need patience. The game has only been in development for about two years, and considering the lengthy production cycles of modern AAA titles, it’s unlikely we’ll see it showcased anytime soon at events like Ubisoft Forward or Summer Game Fest. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Ubisoft has recently stated it is delaying several of its biggest titles. This could mean a shift in company priorities, potentially impacting the development of original IPs like Alterra.

Call of Duty Warzone Crashing and Server Issues Affecting Players Since Season 4 Launch, and Activision Rolls Out Update to Disable Parachute Customization Because of It

[summaraize]

A few days ago, Activision launched Season 4 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone, which brought in new content, gameplay changes and a lot more. Unfortunately, this new patch also introduced a host of problems for COD: Warzone players, with Ranked Play being affected as well.

While all platforms are affected, it appears that PlayStation (PS4, PS5) gamers are most significantly impacted, based on player feedback.

Call of Duty Warzone Has Issues Loading Matches, Crashing Issues Galore Since Season 4 Launched

Ricochet team

Loads of threads have surfaced on the game’s subreddit, with one gamer explaining how it took them three tries to launch a game only to have it lag and then crash due to shader issues until they noped out.

Activision has announced that an update (server-side, most likely) will be rolling out to disable parachute customization options temporarily. “An update has begun rolling out that will temporarily disable parachute customization options to promote greater stability across all matches while a permanent fix is investigated,” the official Twitter/X /X account said.

Will this fix the crashing issues? Hopefully, but given a permanent fix is being worked on, we’re expecting this won’t solve all the server and crashing issues. If Activision issues another statement about it, we’ll let our readers know.

If you found a way to make the game run, leave a comment and let us know.

ARC Raiders’ PlayStation File Update Seems to Suggest Potential Full-Scale Beta Incoming

While ARC Raiders has just conducted its latest closed technical test, Embark Studios appears to be preparing the game for a full-scale beta or an actual release, based on recent developments from the game’s test client.

Players have reported (via Scrappy) that in certain regions,  the ARC Raiders tech build has been renamed to what was once “ARC Raiders Tech Test | Beta” to just “ARC Raiders | Beta”.

ARC Raiders Launching Full Beta Soon?

The ARC Raiders community is conflicted. While some think this is proof that we’re getting a beta release soon, others think is a simple name change and means absolutely nothing. Based on what we’ve seen, the name change isn’t active on every region.

Adding fuel to the fire, the Xbox Series X|S client for ARC Raiders is now available in the Xbox app. Players can now install a small file that seems to be a placeholder for a preload. Some members in the community are guessing this might be a sign the game is getting a release soon, while others think this is also proof that a full-scale beta is about to be released.

It’s worth noting that the Summer Game Fest is scheduled to take place next week, and I would be surprised if we didn’t hear anything about ARC Raiders at the event — either a release date, or a full-scale beta roll out date. Heck, I wouldn’t be shocked if Emark shadow drops the beta on the day of its announcement.

Even in its technical test state, feedback for the upcoming extraction title has been quite positive. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it’s a third-person, survival shooter made by the folks who developed the freee-to-play hit, The Finals. ARC Raiders won’t be free-to-play, and is intended to be a premium release, though won’t cost $60 or $70.

While Embark has not made any official release date announcement, the studio did confirm the game is due for release in 2025.

Elden Ring Nightreign Next Update Version 1.02 Due Next Week and Here’s a Preview; Game Hits 2M Players on First Day

[summaraize]

While Elden Ring Nightreign just launched today, FromSoftware isn’t sitting down twiddling its thumbs, as the developers already have an update planned for the game to be released sometime next week.

This is patch version 1.02, and will implement improvements for solo players.

Elden Ring Nightreign Next Update 1.02 Releasing Soon and We Know Some of the Changes Incoming

According to FromSoftware, the Elden Ring Nightreign 1.02 patch will include the following improvements for solo expeditions:

  • The effect “Automatic Revival Upon Defeat”, which allows revival once per night boss battle, will be added to solo expeditions.
  •  The amount of runes gained will be increased.

No word on whether more improvements or bug fixes will be part of the patch roll out, but I’m expecting a few bugs to be squashed as part of it.

In related news, the game’s first day is a smashing success. No doubt buoyed by the Elden Ring name, Nightreign has already managed two million players! The studio announced the number and thanked players for their support, stating, “Darkness fell over Limveld, and two million Nightfarers rose up against it. Thank you for your support.”

Hopefully, people know what Nightreign is all about and didn’t assume it’s a sequel to Elden Ring or that it would feature the same kind of gameplay as FromSoftware’s arguably most popular game in history.

In case you’re on the fence about the game, our review spoke very highly of it.  Resident reviewer Jimmy Lara said, “Going into Elden Ring Nightreign, I admit I was skeptical, wary of FromSoftware venturing into unfamiliar multiplayer territory. Yet, after countless runs and shared triumphs with fellow Nightfarers, it’s clear my concerns were unfounded. Nightreign isn’t merely a multiplayer spin-off; it’s a testament to FromSoftware’s ability to innovate while fiercely guarding the essence of what makes a Souls game so compelling.”

If that’s not a big enough praise, then I don’t know what is.

When Marvel Rivals gets another new update, MP1st will inform our readers all about it.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Dev Thinks “Brevity” Should Be More of a “Virtue” in Gaming, Questions Link of Game Length to Price

[summaraize]

While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is in no way a short game, it’s not exactly a super-long one either, and if you compare it to other RPGs, its length pales in comparison. The folks at Sandfall intentionally made the RPG to not be as long as other games, since they want to make sure they respected the player’s time.

This was something the studio and its publisher, Kepler Interactivem talked about, and how a game’s value shouldn’t be tied to its length.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Values People’s Time, Which Is Why the Devs Avoided Bloat

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Kepler Interactive Portfolio Director Matthew Handrahan, and Sandfall Interactive COO François Meurisse talk about the game’s reception and its development.

One of the topics discussed is how the game doesn’t have bloat or any kind of padding to make the game longer.  Handrahan notes, “One of the things that’s great about Expedition 33 is it really respects the player’s time. It gives them plenty to do, and it gives them plenty of satisfaction, but it isn’t arbitrarily 500 hours of gameplay. It’s impactful because it’s scoped correctly. […] It doesn’t have any sense of bloat or extraneous things that are put there just to make it larger and larger and larger.”

Adding to that, Handrahan thinks games being straight to the point is something that should be lauded. “Brevity should be more of a virtue in gaming. Something can be better by being shorter – something that’s being discussed in film at the moment. Every film seems to be two and a half hours long, and I think most people are like, ‘Can they all be a bit shorter, please? Because we have other things to do with our lives’,” the Kepler exec adds.

Chiming in, Meurisse mentioned that Clair Obscur’s focus was on quality not quantity. The studio COO talked about the game’s length, and how they aimed for a shorter but more intense experience. “”From the beginning, we wanted to do an intense and short experience. The first length estimates of the game were closer to 20 hours for the main quest. I think we ended up closer to 30, even 40 hours if you take a bit of time. As a player, there are so many great games out there that I want to experience, [and] what’s important to me is the level of excitement and fun I get from a game, rather than how long it is.”

Meurisse also makes a case on why a game’s length shouldn’t be linked to its price, and used one of the most acclaimed indie games as an example. “The value that players get from games does not align systematically with the length of the game,” he says. “For example, one of my favourite games of all time is Inside, which lasts about two hours, but it’s one of the most polished, and intense [experiences] – and even life changing for some people,” Meurisse adds.

As someone who also has limited time to play games given adult responsibilities, I agree with both Handrahan and Meurisse. I’d rather play a game with no bloat, instead of collecting various in-game trinkets just so a dev can say that their game takes 80+ hours to complete. Same with length, I don’t judge a mean based on how fast I can eat it. I’d rather play a good 2-5 hour game, than slog through an RPG that promises dozens of hours so it’s worth the price.

Hopefully, whatever Sandfall’s next game is, they stick to Expedition 33’s brevity as well.
