Overwatch 2 New Hero Lifeweaver Gameplay Trailer Released, Healing and Repositioning Abilities Detailed

Overwatch 2‘s new Support hero “Lifeweaver” has been debuted along with his powerful healing abilities in a gameplay trailer released today. Lifeweaver’s kit is focused around healing and bailing out his allies, but also includes disruptive abilities to allow players to effectively control zones.

Check out the Lifeweaver gameplay trailer below:

Niran Pruksamanee or “Lifeweaver” is a ranged healer from Thailand who employs his own regenerative “Biolight” invention to aid the sick he encounters on his travels. Biolight manifests in gameplay through Lifeweaver’s powerful abilities such as Healing Blossom, which is a projectile that can be launched at allies to heal them from afar. His Life Grip ability allows him to reposition allies at will while enclosing them in a protective bubble, and the Petal Platform ability can be used to lift up both allies and enemies above the fight should they step on the platform.

Though Lifeweaver is a healer, he is adequately equipped to deal a steady stream of damage with sustain through his Thorn Volley alternate primary fire and his self-healing Rejuvenating Dash. Further, his Tree of Life ultimate spawns a tree on the map that not only heals allies in a radius but can also be used to deny vision and barricade chokepoints. Should Lifeweaver happen to die, he can still provide value to his team through his Parting Gift passive, which drops a healing item that either team can pick up.

Lifeweaver will debut as Overwatch’s 37th hero with the beginning of Overwatch 2 Season 4 on April 11. A more detailed explanation of his abilities and unique strengths can be found here. Stay tuned here at MP1st for all upcoming Overwatch 2 news and announcements.

Meet Your Maker Review – Claustrophobic Death Maze

If Portal and Mad Max had a baby, it would be gritty, mean, and exceptionally intelligent. Meet Your Maker is the kind of oddity that is hard to label at first but slowly grows on you, up to a point where you feel this urge to pause the game, stand up, and heartily applaud. Behaviour Interactive took some brave risks in this pot-pourri of genres and distinctly succeeded, delivering a bold, wickedly original, and fiendishly devilish game about raiding other players’ outposts in an asynchronous gameplay style, while copiously sweating as you navigate the deadly claustrophobic corridors.

The Cake Is Alright

Meet Your Maker Chimera

The accomplished post-apocalyptic atmosphere in Meet Your Maker is gloomy and desperate, as you try to feed the living experiment Chimera in a bid to save life on Earth, or what’s left of it. For that, you will need the most valuable resource available, Genetic Material, or GenMat, your goal as you raid each outpost and escape… or die trying.

Meet Your Maker effortlessly blends elements of tower-defense, puzzle, first-person shooter, and base-building in a seamless and addictive experience. Much like the Portal series and The Entropy Centre, you are thrust into these fiendish outposts and must overcome various challenges to reach your objective, but the path is a treacherous one. Death looms at every corner, traps blend in with walls, and grotesque guards prevent you from moving unscathed. Grab the GenMat from whatever dark place it may be hiding, and then it’s time to backtrack in an equally dangerous and anxiety-inducing escape, new traps springing elsewhere, to the starting point or the desert surrounding the outpost.

High anxiety would perfectly fit as a hypothetical subtitle for Meet Your Maker. The feeling of exploring the unknown and lethal player creations, frequently escaping death by an inch is truly remarkable, and each successful run is worth celebrating, taking a breather, especially in the ferociously vicious Brutal maps. Treading carefully and perfect aim are key, but your greatest asset is your brain – memorize the layout, where every single trap is sneakily placed, anticipate each spike or explosive, and bite your lip as you lose your bearings and part of your sanity in unexpectedly labyrinthic areas.

Meet Your Maker GenMat

Finding the GenMat cannister may be partly down to luck, but your best bet is to pay attention to the Harvester that is working the outpost. This description-defying humanoid’s only purpose is to reach the extractor and bring its contents back to the shipping station at the start. No matter how twisted and grand each outpost may look, there’s always at least one straight path leading to the GenMat, so you can follow the Harvester and learn the whereabouts of your objective. Obviously, with all the deathtraps and monstrous creatures, it’s easier said than done.

Meet Your Maker plays with ammo in a brilliant way, adding another tactical layer to a game that is so incredibly rich when you look beneath the surface. There’s no such thing as ammo caches or countless projectiles at your disposal – your volt lancer and plasma bow, to name a few of the ranged weapons, come with very low ammo capacity. This forces you to retrieve every bolt you shoot, even the ones that are now stuck on a corpse. Pick them back up, something that isn’t always straightforward, but at least each bolt has a tracker that blinks and gives away their location, so keep your eyes peeled.

Before each raid you must explore your hub, where the suspiciously benevolent Chimera rests, waiting for the upgrades at the push of a button. Nearby, you have the five advisors that serve as specializations for various categories: weapons, guards, hardware, suits, and traps. Your incursions out in the wasteland will result in parts and currency that is used to level up the Chimera, but also each advisor, offering temporary boosts, specific items, and perks that will make all the difference. More ammo and shot range, suits that focus on different aspects such as melee combat and speed, new guard types, and the like.

Meet Your Maker Outpost

You must carefully plan your loadout, as it cannot be changed after taking your first step. Your volt lancer is a deadly weapon that also doubles as a trap destroyer, but the crossbow is ineffective against traps, although perfectly suited for long-range enemy hits. On the other hand, the latter is puny against armored grunts, which means that you must destroy their armor with a bolt, then use an arrow to puncture the flesh. Or you can go melee happy with your blade if you like to go up close and personal.

A grapple hook will be your tool of choice, turning navigation into a free-form affair that otherwise would fee somewhat limited. You can use it to grab those bolts from out of reach places, or simply to navigate faster across the environments, barely escaping the deadly traps by the skin of your teeth. In terms of enjoyment, it’s a great addition that feels good to have and is very useful.

Little House of Horrors

Meet Your Maker Build Outpost

The other distinguished area of Meet Your Maker is the Build phase. Think Minecraft, but remarkably devious and with a lot more impaling and burning, and you may get the idea. The build tools are incredibly easy to use, allowing you to create a simple outpost in a matter of minutes. So far, the game already sports quite a few visually impressive and vast creations, showing that it can work both as a tool for sly butchering purposes and for jaw-dropping artistic accomplishments. From skulls with functioning teeth – which are nothing but ingeniously placed pistons – to devilish facades or even glass buildings shooting for the sky, there’s quite some diversity to the sights and trap layouts.

Apart from placing blocks and traps in very intuitive methods along with a few action modifiers, there’s a remarkably clever mechanism to the guards. Instead of complex systems tracing point A to B and where they will move between them, you can simply embody a guard and walk around, recording this movement pattern as their patrol. Straightforward, smart, even quite appealing to experiment with.

Your little shrine of death will level up in Prestige according to the amount of GenMat it extracts, even when the game isn’t running, allowing you to expand on the build limitations and add some extra hazards to it. Sometimes the best way to thwart enemy raiders is to turn it into a huge maze, so the more scope you have for distractions, the better. You will be notified when a player is killed, so you can claim the spoils of war. Your outpost’s rating also grows as you add more things into it and make it deadlier, ranging from normal to dangerous and the coveted brutal grade.

After each run, you and other players get to rate an outpost in four different categories: fun, brutal, ingenious, and artistic. These are pretty much self-explanatory, and it’s wonderful to start raking in those votes and watch the kill count climbing, giving you an evil genius vibe that is hard not to be happy about.

Since every outpost is explored in an asynchronous way, this means that as soon as your creation goes live, it will be accessible for other players to raid, and the same happens during the campaign with the concepts of others. You can even add some modifiers to your outpost, such as losing 300 GenMat when players successfully steal from you, but each player killed rewards you with extra 100% GenMat.

Happy Death Day

Meet Your Maker Trap Blast

For all the grippy action and building, there’s something of a worry that could be easily solved and which concerns the destroyed traps and how the resulting textures are somewhat similar to traps in perfect working condition – blown-up contraptions should be better emphasized, with visible smoke and flames coming out from them. That would make us certain that we have dealt with them and the deceiving deaths in the style of “oh, I thought that one was already wrecked.” Unnecessarily as it may seem and easily fixed, this doubt will haunt you occasionally.

Meet Your Maker is the kind of game that makes you raise an eyebrow, wondering just what you got yourself into, but after a couple of hours you are addicted. It’s extremely original and clever, there’s already enough content to burn and it will only grow from here, and the build tools are great, providing everything you need but without pointless overcomplications. You can even raid outposts in co-op mode with a friend, and while that doubles up the fun factor, it’s not even essential as the game is a joy to play alone as well, so don’t make that extra multiplayer bullet point as something to significantly weigh on your decision to get this game.

And get the game you should. Meet Your Maker comes with a compelling gameplay loop of raid-build-upgrade-repeat that always kept me eager for the next few round. Despite my traditional reluctance for anything involving map editors, I was extremely satisfied and even a bit proud of my creation, adding more to it at every opportunity. A great example of how to make a genre mix work, Meet Your Maker is a delicious melting pot, even if I don’t trust the Chimera as far as I can throw it.

Score: 9/10

Pros

  • A remarkable genre crossover
  • Exciting and anxiety-inducing outpost raiding
  • Simple and effective build tools
  • Compelling atmosphere, gritty and desperate
  • Two-player co-op raiding gameplay

Cons

  • Destroyed traps could be better signaled

Cyberpunk 2077 Path Tracing “Overdrive Mode” Debuted With New Trailer

CD Projekt Red and Nvidia have debuted Cyberpunk 2077‘s path tracing feature (termed “Overdrive Mode”) with a new trailer, comparing scenes and environments from the game with and without the usage of path tracing. Additionally, the video also reveals significant improvements in framerate with the usage of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology.

Check out the reveal trailer below:

As announced previously, full ray tracing (commonly referred to as “path tracing”) is coming to Cyberpunk 2077 in a technical preview set for an April 11 release on PC. Full ray tracing “accurately simulates light throughout an entire scene,” and the addition of the feature to Cyberpunk 2077 has apparently only been made possible by Nvidia’s work with its RTX 40 series of GPUs and its AI-powered DLSS 3 technology.

The upcoming technical preview incorporates the NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination SDK (RTXDI), which allows developers to place thousands of objects with ray-traced light in a scene. Additionally, the Global Illumination (GI) system has also been revamped to use path tracing, and reflections now “incorporate bounced detail” and are rendered at full resolution. Check out a scene comparison below:

Finally, the usage of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 supersampling solution heavily improves framerates while the resource-hungry path tracing feature is enabled. In ray-traced gameplay environments with numerous moving parts – such as when players are driving through Night City – enabling DLSS 3 can boost the framerate from under 20fps to above 130fps in many conditions.

Unfortunately for many PC gamers, Nvidia recommends that players be equipped with an RTX 40 series GPU (and enable DLSS 3) to enjoy the technical preview when it rolls out with update 1.62 on April 11, owing to how demanding path tracing is. However, those who do not have such powerful setups can still enjoy the feature using Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service. Check out other scene comparisons as well as a more detailed technical analysis of path tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 here.

Everspace 2 Review – Clone Wars

After a long spell in Early Access, Everspace 2 is finally set for departure, allowing fans of space operas to dive into a vast and treacherous galaxy. This is an unapologetic action combat game deeply rooted in an involving storyline, and one of those cases where it knows very clearly what it is aiming for – an adventure of galactic proportions with an arcade style and a well-rounded and polished feel, albeit with a significant dose of grind on the side.

Descent Into Space

The campaign in this single-player space shooter takes you across a map with various planets that opens gradually, with missions in procedurally generated maps. This is perfect for players looking for additional thrills in subsequent runs, but the average gamer will find comfort in the dozens of hours that a single run offers. With all the side-missions to dive into and the fierce dogfights to engage in, there’s more than enough to keep you busy for several days, and it’s impossible to overlook the Star Wars feel, despite the obvious discrepancies between the two franchises.

Speaking of parallels, some missions drive you to enter caves or destroyed vessels, man-made metal beasts where there’s a fine line between orientation and bewilderment, and veteran gamers will fondly remember the Descent series, especially if you select the cockpit view. Extremely immersive and fully functional, this first-person perspective is a rollercoaster ride with terrific sensations and an arcade feel like very few, and consequently isn’t recommended to the most sensitive players, as it easily conveys feelings of dizziness and disorientation that are all part of the concept of flying a powerful ship – or at least I assume.

Everspace 2 Review

Everspace 2 screams for mouse and keyboard control, the best way to participate in frantic dogfights that literally sweep you off your feet and turn you upside down. With accurate mouse control you can pick the targets carefully, even those that are visible through a small gap that your ship can’t fly through – aim your cannons and take out that target with precision.

The story is interesting, picking up on the first game’s persona of Adam Roslin, a clone that enjoyed immortality for some time but is now on his last life. This is also a great excuse to ditch the roguelike elements of the original and push the game towards a story-based experience where scripted missions are key. Adam also shows some signs of humanity here and there, such as when a haphazard mission ends up bringing an uninvited guest into homebase, a delightful touch for an identity previously regarded as leaning on the bland side. While there isn’t a way to steer the story in significant ways, the many graphic novel-like cutscenes and voice acting help us feel like a part of the grand scheme of things, when we’re not shooting down drones and other enemies.

Dogfighting is at the core of Everspace 2, and it is where the game truly shines. With a control approach that once again harkens back to the days of Descent, your ships are a responsive bunch, maneuvering almost as a gaming character with a no clip hack activated, except for the part of going through objects, but this fully in a positive light. The way you strafe and roll, hover and boost, everything feels reactive and refined, frantic and weighty, with a great feel for the way each laser or missile tracks down and hits your enemies with the resulting satisfying explosion, in both visual and aural sense. This is a gorgeous beast of a game, a looker of galactic proportions that is going to make you pause to look at the cosmos, drunk from the grandiose color arrangements and special effects that are seen every step of the way. A photo mode is there for any wannabe space tourists with the desire to show off.

Your ship comes with an ultimate and a few skills to use when the going gets tough, from a last resort boost out of dodge to an EMP that stuns rival ships for a few seconds, to use a lingo that may be straight out of tactical battlers, but entirely fitting the bill here. This action-packed combat ends up being inadequate for gamepad control, a somewhat underwhelming alternative for all the freedom and neck-twisting action that unfolds right in front of your eyes. And behind you, as it should be expected.

Space Hoarders

Everspace 2 Review

For all the action there is, Everspace 2 does try to balance it with a little puzzle-solving, oddly enough for a game set in space. Using the very precise ship control, you are thrust into true claustrophobic challenges, searching for generators to blast and power sources to carry around, unlocking doors and gateways to progress. The tight spaces and reduced visibility greatly contrast with the open space areas and are more of a resilience and accuracy test than a playground for shootouts, although there’s the occasional action as well.

The downside is that some of these sections lack distinguishing landmarks, which added to the dim lighting and directional freedom make it extremely easy to get lost and frustrated. Moving back and forth inside a neglected hulk or cave gets tiring when the objectives are somewhat unclear, or your ship’s radars just don’t want to pick them up, making you yearn for your times out there in wide open space.

Your objective radars can be quite fiddly, with over a dozen markers in front of you, but barely any difference between them. Searching for a specific goal becomes a bit of a challenge when the symbol only changes into what it truly represents as you approach the spot, so it may take some thrusting and patience to investigate everything around you.

Fighting With My Ship

Everspace 2 Review

The outcome of the fights often turns into a deluge of loot to pick up, naturally divided into various rarities, from the lowly uncommon right up to the sought-after superior. The open world roaming is made via jump drives and encourages planet exploration, with plenty of materials ripe for the taking. Some of them are hidden inside metallic hulks, others are simply drifting in space, waiting to be pulled into your ship. Minerals can be shot so that you can collect the shards, and some merchandise that you discover may fetch a good price in one of the trading posts.

It’s true that there’s a certain degree of grind to Everspace 2 that you must accomplish if you plan on crafting the best gear, leveling up companion perks, and staying competitive. A constant search for materials is needed if you want to face the fights with a confident outlook, unless you prefer to head over to the settings and lower the difficulty. Some players may love the incessant push to find every container and grab every piece of loot, while others would prefer a more streamlined approach.

Everspace 2 isn’t a breakthrough or a significant step forward to the genre, but it’s not exactly trying to be. An extremely engaging and gorgeous space shooter supported by a gripping storyline, the action is frantic and head-turning, and cunningly balanced by the interior sections with a puzzle approach. Forget any complex simulation aspects and profound economic systems, indulge yourself in this vast galaxy (somewhat) open to exploration, and enjoy the heated dogfights, even if every once in a while, curse words may echo within the labyrinthine confines of a derelict metallic husk.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • A gorgeous space shooter
  • Dogfights are smooth and dizzyingly immersive
  • Fitting storyline that keeps you involved
  • Many hours and planets ahead
  • Puzzle sections are a welcome break from the shooting…

Cons:

  • … But sometimes they will frustrate you
  • Some grind to keep up with

Ravenswatch Hands-On Preview – The Grim Roguelite Brothers

Fans of tough challenges and everyone else who loves testing their skills on the ultimate trials are in for a treat with Ravenswatch, the new roguelite action game from the makers of Curse of the Dead Gods. It’s all about learning every intricacy, every twist to your unique character and excelling in combat, each run and ensuing death giving true meaning to the saying “practice makes perfect.”

Twisted Fairy Tales

With a full year of Early Access planned, developer Passtech Games seems committed to deliver a premier roguelite experience. The playable build we tried had all the core mechanics in place, offering a taste of the gameplay loop that genre fans are willing to die for, speaking in pure gaming terms, that is. After all, death is an underlying part of such games, where learning enemy patterns and maximizing your attack strategy and skill use is crucial for a successful run through the randomized maps.

You will face some difficult choices when selecting your character, something that is one of the best things about the game. The six heroes on display (Scarlet, Pied Piper, Beowulf, The Snow Queen, Aladdin, and Melusine) may ring a bell or two, lifted as they are from popular folklore and fairy tales but with a visual dark-fantasy spin that is astonishingly enticing. Think of them as the grim counterparts to the – mostly – righteous protagonists of timeless tales such as One Thousand and One Nights, Three Little Pigs, and Beowulf, but the good versus evil scales are balanced with the inclusion of The Snow Queen, Pied Piper, and surely a few more villains down the line, as there are plans to increase the numbers. There is potential for so many great additions, with Alice in Wonderland coming to mind as a fan-favorite and a terrific selling point to showcase, but the current offer is already quite diverse.

Ravenswatch Preview Little Red Riding Hood

Each hero packs more personality and creativity in one leg than the entire body of your average roguelite character. One of the reasons supporting this claim is that Ravenswatch brings a few twists to the genre that may not be entirely unique while in isolation, but when combined they make up for some very interesting features, including a day and night cycle that has direct effect on some heroes.

Take Scarlet, for example, the shadowy equivalent of Little Red Riding Hood and the big, bad wolf mingled into one. At nightfall, she turns into a werewolf, gaining new and devastating abilities, returning to her normal form as daytime breaks.

The Pied Piper is another stunningly realized character, both in visuals terms and effective combat abilities. With up to 20 rats spawning around him, you can command them to attack, with the rodents dying right afterwards. The piper shoots musical notes from his flute, with a secondary attack that boosts note damage and speed, all of this while still moving around, albeit at a slower pace.

Other characters come with their very unique complexities and madly differ in terms of control difficulty, so it’s best not to aim too high until having mastered the more straightforward ones, if there’s actually such a thing in this game. Melusine is a tough one, a mermaid that switches between two stances to summon a controllable Wisp, but the tradeoff is that she remains immobile and consequently an easy target during this attack posture. Alladin can summon the genie to make one wish out of three options, from damage to heal or making dream shards appear. Dream shards are the currency that you can spend on the merchant or some special wells to acquire buffs.

The Nightmare Squad

Ravenswatch Preview Melusine

Currently there’s only one region to explore out of the three that are intended. Randomized for each run and with the occasional trip down a claustrophobic cave, this area allows you to play for a few in-game days and create the build you desire until the nightmare boss arrives and a tough battle ensues. Occasionally you may stumble upon some quests, such as one where the NPC tasks you with collecting stones to reinforce a house, but hopefully more mission variety is in the works.

Ravenswatch offers very solid and diverse combat, much thanks to the care in getting each hero to feel unique and engaging. Not even animation cancelling was forgotten, allowing you to swiftly interrupt a move and perform a dodge in just the exact timing, as long as you have the stamina to do so. Dying is not the end, as you have three attempts to revive and maybe even one more if you play your cards right – that is, if you purchase a buff that allows you to come back to life for a certain sum of dream shards. Because nothing in the world comes for free, especially deals that involve setting free from the cold grasp of the grim reaper.

While it can be appreciated solo and offers great replay value due to its remarkable cast and randomized maps, it’s hard to deny that Ravenswatch becomes a completely different beast when enjoyed with up to four players online. Difficulty ramps accordingly and teamwork becomes crucial to face the increased challenges, as each player uses their respective hero’s abilities and opens up significant tactical possibilities that the single-player mode never manages to achieve.

Ravenswatch Preview Beowulf

Building on the experience learned from Curse of the Dead Gods but opting for a distinct approach to the action roguelite, Ravenswatch already feels absorbing with its frantic skill-based combat and superb replay value. With a long road ahead before the official launch, it will be interesting to see where it goes and how much it changes – but especially, who will be the new grim and twisted faces to invite themselves into this nightmarish but so appealing corrupted world.

MP1st was given access to a preview build of Ravenswatch for our hands-on session. Ravenswatch is set to enter Early Access on April 6, 2023 for PC, with a full release to follow on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.
