Final Fantasy 16 Combat System Isn’t Turn-Based Due to Sales, and Younger Audience Used to Instant Action

If you’ve seen gameplay of Final Fantasy 16 (Final Fantasy XVI), then you’ve no doubt seen that the Final Fantasy 16 combat system is not turn-based like in previous Final Fantasy games, but it’s more action-oriented with everything happening in real-time.

Speaking in an interview Final Fantasy 16 Producer Naoki Yoshida and Director Hiroshi Takai explained why FF16 is not doing turn-based combat, and it has to do with today’s modern gamers and game sales.

Creating a Final Fantasy, a numbered Final Fantasy, has become such an endeavor, to the point where your development costs can go upwards of $100 million, just to create one game. And so to recoup that development cost, you need as many people playing your game as possible. And while a lot of the older fans are used to what Final Fantasy had in the past, a lot of younger [players] have never played a Final Fantasy game. They grew up playing first-person shooters, they grew up playing games like [Grand Theft Auto], where basically you press a button and something happens immediately. – Naoki Yoshida, FF16 Producer

Yoshida adds that gamers these days expect a response immediately when they press a button, and that to appeal to today’s gamers, going the action route was “pretty much the only way.”

It’s not a command-based system. When you press the square, your guy shoots. Why do you have to wait for him to shoot, I should be able to press square and he shoots immediately. You have this whole generation of gamers that grew up with this, [and you need] to get those generations to come in and also play [FFXVI], which has this image of not being that type of game. You have to make it appealing to that group as well. And so to get that group to come in and introduce them to the series, we decided to go down this route – action was pretty much the only way. – Naoki Yoshida, FF16 Producer

Given how fantastic the combat in Final Fantasy 16 is looking so far, it seems the devs made the right call.

In other FF16 news, Square Enix also explained why the action-RPG is exclusive to the PS5.

Final Fantasy 16 is scheduled for release on the PS5 this June 22, 2023.

“Ra Ra Boom” Is a 4-Player Co-op Beat-‘Em-Up Featuring Ninja Cheerleaders Out This Fall, Watch the Reveal Trailer

Here’s something different: while we’ve played beat-’em-ups before where our characters were robots, Gylee Games’s upcoming “Ra Ra Boom” is a different breed, as it features ninja cheerleaders beating the snot out of enemies!

Announced today, the game is due on PC this fall. Check out the announcement trailer alongside more info straight from the press release.

Here’s a rundown of the info from the press release:

  • Will feature four playable characters: Aris, Saida, Ren and Vee – sports their own weapons and abilities, giving players four different, unique takes on combat. Play fast and loose as Aris with her scythe or bring the pain as Vee, who wields a shield and machine gun. Any way you play, you and your teammates will be dismantling the robotic opposition.
  • Features 2D beat-’em-up co-op gameplay. Expect huge boss battles.
  • Each of the ninja cheerleader will have upgradable combos for both melee and ranged attacks, and will also feature light, heavy, and special attacks to mix the action up.
  • Ra Ra Boom will integrate its own unique “lane” system: Integrating horizontal lanes naturally into the hand-drawn environments, you’ll be able to tell which enemy you’re targeting with a flurry of furious blows – whether in melee range or attacking from a distance using ranged attacks. With the ability to quickly switch between lanes, you can strategically target multiple opponents, racking up massive combos any true beat-’em-up fan can enjoy.
  • All four characters will have their own character arcs, are hand-drawn, and cinematic cutscenes will be used to drive the narrative forward. Expect topics such as mental health, friendship, trust, imposter syndrome and more to be part of the mix.
  • Will feature 10 levels in total.

Here’s a story synopsis:

Ra Ra Boom features four playable, relatable characters all processing grief in their own way after the death of their friend and leader at the nefarious hands of Zoi, humanity’s biggest and most dangerous AI. After this rogue AI tried to destroy humanity 20 years ago, some humans managed to escape – but they didn’t get far. Now Zoi is back to finish what it started, and four teenage ninja cheerleaders who have only known life on a spaceship are the only ones capable of stopping the complete destruction of humanity off Earth.

I have to admit, this is one different kind of game. Given how beat-’em-ups are having a retro renaissance of sorts, we’ll be keeping our eye out on this one.

Ra Ra Boom is being developed by Gylee Games, and is set for a fall release on PC.

New Tchia Gameplay Video Dives Into the Game’s In-Depth Ukelele Instrument

Tchia, the upcoming island-themed sandbox adventure game, just got a new video that highlights the ukelele, an instrument that will be useful for many aspects of the game. The Tchia gameplay video goes into detail about how the ukelele works, what you can do with it, and more.

You can find gameplay footage as well as a visual demonstration of the ukelele’s features in the video below:

To sum it up, the ukelele in Tchia essentially works as a versatile tool that you can use to perform various actions. These include options for exploration, combat, and more. You’ll also be using the ukelele quite a few times throughout the game’s story via light rhythm gameplay mechanics. For those who aren’t fans of needing to press buttons on time, don’t worry—these mechanics have no fail states, and you can even activate an option to have the game perform the mechanics for you automatically.

The ukelele also functions as an instrument on its own, with an entire major scale as well as various ways to play the notes. You can pick, strum, and even bend notes to add more depth and beauty to your melodies.

Tchia will be available on March 21 on PS4, PS5, and PC.

Diablo 4 Live Action Trailer Features Artistic Ceiling Murals of the Game’s Story

A new trailer for Diablo 4 was recently released, and this one’s a little different from the usual cinematic or gameplay trailer. The Diablo 4 live action trailer features a realistic ceiling mural on France’s Chapelle de Jesuites which tells the story behind Diablo 4.

GENERAL UPDATES

Adjusted Distance Attenuation on Enemy Footsteps

We missed a change in our Season 3 patch notes about some adjustments made to the distance in which you can hear enemy footsteps. We’ve continued to refine this change and have found a nice middle ground between where it was in Season 2 and where it was prior to today’s patch.

Challenges

Weekly Challenges

  • Removed “To the Victors… – Win 15 games in Unranked or Competitive.”
  • Added a new challenge, “Casual Dedication – Win 15 games in any Unranked mode.”
  • Added a new challenge, “Competitive Advantage – Win 10 games in any Competitive mode.”
  • Total number of challenges needed to earn all Overwatch Coins is still 11.
  • Removed “Coin Line – Win 5 games in Arcade.”
  • Added a new challenge, “Change of Pace – Win 5 games in Mystery Heroes, Free-for-All Deathmatch, or any Arcade mode.”
  • Changed “Role Mastery” to “Win 5 games each as 2 different roles in Quick Play or Competitive Play.”

Daily Challenges

  • “Support Weapon Mastery” reduced from 12,500 to 10,000
  • “Support Ability Mastery” reduced from 10,000 to 8,000

Challenge Progress during End of Round

  • Challenges the player has made progress on during the match will be shown with a visual representation of remaining progress needed

End of Match Scoreboard Update

  • We are taking a snapshot of each player’s final stats during the match and persisting it on the tab scoreboard during post-match. Previously a player’s stats and name would disappear as soon as they left the match

Matchmaking

  • We fixed a bug causing large parties to wait longer in queue than intended
  • The matchmaker will now prioritize putting parties together which have a similar delta between the highest and lowest rated player
  • We made improvements that should help reduce Unranked queue times and increase Competitive match quality

COMPETITIVE UPDATES

Competitive Mystery Heroes

  • Competitive Mystery Heroes added to Competitive Play
  • Season 1 begins on March 14!

Competitive Screen Layout Update

We have added buttons to the Competitive Play menu that will allow players to easily access the tier legend, leaderboard, and competitive progress screens.

Top 500 Leaderboard Update

Players in the Top 500 will now see an animated update of their current position on the leaderboard after each match.

HERO UPDATES

TANK

Orisa

Terra Surge

  • Terra Surge can now be interrupted by Hack

Dev Comment: Terra Surge is a channeled ultimate which cannot be interrupted by most abilities, as it gains the same effects as Fortify. While this makes sense for stuns, Sombra’s Hack interrupt shouldn’t be negated and now correctly cancels Terra Surge.

Ramattra

Annihilation

  • Using Annihilation while in Nemesis Form refreshes your bonus armor

Dev Comment: Players found that shifting out of Nemesis Form before activating the Annihilation ultimate would fully reset Nemesis Form’s bonus armor. To smooth out the gameplay, it now resets the armor health automatically as part of the ultimate activation.

Roadhog

Chain Hook

  • Chain Hook cooldown now starts when the ability ends instead of at the start
  • Chain Hook cooldown reduced from 8 to 6 seconds

Dev Comment: The Chain Hook cooldown beginning when the ability started, instead of at the end, caused some confusion when discussing the cooldown since once you can see the timer, it appeared a second shorter (7 seconds) than the actual maximum cooldown. After fixing that, we’re reducing the cooldown overall by an additional second to increase the frequency of Roadhog’s team utility now that being pulled in by Chain Hook is less deadly.

Wrecking Ball

General

  • Added the hero-specific option “Relative aim sensitivity while rolling”
  • Added the hero-specific option “Relative gyro sensitivity while rolling” (Nintendo Switch™ Platform Only)

Grappling Claw

  • Added a timeout indicator for Grappling Claw located above the ability icon

Minefield

  • Minefield arming time increased from 1 to 1.25 seconds

Dev Comment: There is now a hero control option for Wrecking Ball to set a separate aim sensitivity while transformed into a ball as players may want to aim his weapons in first-person and move the camera in third-person significantly differently. In addition, a visual indicator for Grappling Claw has been added to indicate its maximum duration before automatically detaching.

Zarya

General

  • The shared cooldown for Particle Barrier and Projected Barrier reduced from 11 to 10 seconds

Dev Comment: A previous change decreased both barrier duration and increased the cooldown at the same time, lowering Zarya’s effectiveness more than anticipated. This is a partial reversion to help level it out.

DAMAGEAshe

B.O.B.

  • B.O.B. now prefers to shoot at enemy targets that Ashe damages with her rifle

Dev Comment: We want to enable Ashe and B.O.B. to easily assist one another more. B.O.B. now prioritizes targets damaged by Ashe’s rifle, which may allow for more flexible Ultimate placement.

Hanzo

Lunge

  • Lunge cooldown decreased from 5 to 4 seconds

Dev Comment: Hanzo has high burst damage potential with Storm Bow and Storm Arrows and strong utility with Sonic Arrow but still underperforms compared to other heroes in the same role. This change increases his survivability without directly improving his strengths.

Mei

Blizzard

  • Blizzard ultimate cast time reduced from 0.5 to 0.4 seconds

Dev Comment: Mei’s Blizzard ultimate cast time sometimes led to situations where the animation appeared to have been completed, but there was still additional time that it could get interrupted. This change will help mitigate that feeling without significantly reducing counterplay.

Pharah

Jump Jet

  • Jump Jet movement is now influenced by directional inputs

Dev Comment: In addition to rapidly launching her upwards, Jump Jet used to always move Pharah forward a small amount which made the ability feel less responsive when trying to move to the side or backwards. This change now enables a small amount of horizontal momentum in any direction.

Sojourn

General

  • Torso hit volume width increased by 20%

Dev Comment: Due to the angle of Sojourn’s torso in her default animation stance, her torso hit volume was more difficult to hit compared to similarly sized heroes.

SUPPORT

Baptiste

Immortality Field

  • Immortality Field minimum health threshold increased from 10 to 25%

Dev Comment: Baptiste is capable of potent damage and healing output but often slightly underperforms across many skill levels. This change to the Immortality Field’s minimum health threshold will strengthen his utility and enable him to more reliably assist his allies after its effect ends.

BUG FIXES

GENERAL

  • Fixed an issue where the option to report Inappropriate player names were missing
  • Fixed a bug with Game Reports showing incomplete data
  • Fixed a bug where players on PlayStation 5 were unable to save Highlights
  • Fixed an issue where player presence was shown as ‘Practice Range’ when in Custom Game

  • Fixed a bug where some players who own all name cards could get stuck loading when using the Filter’s tab in the Name Cards menu
  • Fixed a bug on Nintendo Switch where all friends on the Social screen had the same player icons
  • Resolved an issue where heroes performing an emote appeared as t-posed for players loading into the game

MAPS

Antarctic Peninsula

  • Fixed areas where some heroes could become stuck
  • Fixed several gaps in the environment
  • Made changes to the lighting in some parts of the map
  • Fixed a bug where Penguins were missing a noise when being hit with projectiles
  • General improvements

Busan

  • Fixed a bug with the physics of the Cow

Circuit Royale

  • Resolved a collision issue that could cause some heroes to be stuck

Colosseo

  • Fixed a bug with the camera placement for some Plays of the Game

Esperanca

  • Fixed an issue with a tree that could cause D.Va to get stuck when entering her mech

Lijiang Tower

  • Fixed areas of the map that allowed players to escape

Midtown

  • Fixed an area where players were able to unintentionally stand
  • Fixed a bug on Midtown with railing collision not being correctly removed after being destroyed in some cases
  • Midtown can now be selected as an option for Skirmish in Custom Games

HEROES

Ashe

  • Fixed a bug with the Raijin skin clipping into the camera when aiming and firing down the sights

Echo

  • Fixed an issue where cloning a Sombra with a Charm equipped could cause Echo to lose all textures while Cloaked
  • Fixed missing sound effects for the Sticky Bombs ability

Hanzo

  • Fixed a bug where shooting someone with an arrow from a Golden bow could turn their gun gold

Reinhardt

  • Fixed an issue where in some cases players were able to walk out of being pinned by a Reinhardt
  • Fixed a bug with Fire Strike VFX remaining after being eaten by a D.Va’s Defense Matrix

Lúcio

  • Fixed a bug where Lúcio’s Amp it Up animation would continue to play after being stunned

Orisa

  • Resolved a bug with Terra Form that resulted in the VFX ring not drawing for parts of the environment higher than Orisa when used

Symmetra

  • Fixed a bug where you could be sent to the wrong location if taking Symmetra’s Teleporter as it is destroyed

Torbjörn

  • Fixed a bug where your turret would target the same targets as other allied Torbjörn players

WORKSHOP

  • Resolved an issue where the ‘Is Firing Secondary’ condition would not be triggered by certain heroes
  • Resolved an issue where the ‘Is Firing Primary’ condition was not being triggered by certain heroes
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when creating a large number of rules
  • Fixed an issue where it was hard to tell where the UI focus was when using a controller

So far, Blizzard hasn’t released the official patch notes that touches on game balance, but you can read the official details on the One Punch Man collab below.

Heroes Celebrating Heroes

When bringing the universe of One-Punch Man to Overwatch 2, we wanted to do it in a way that shows our heroes celebrating Saitama and his friends. Looking at the hero roster, Doomfist was a perfect fit for donning the iconic yellow suit and white cape, capturing the signature trademark of Saitama’s ability to defeat any enemy in a single punch!

Genji also gets a whole new look, going from cybernetic ninja to the cybernetic brawler, Genos! And, when it came to bringing the powerful psychic, Terrible Tornado to life, we knew no other Overwatch 2 hero could match her personality better than Kiriko!

Each of these three One-Punch Man skins will be offered as part of special store bundles that include other new One-Punch Man cosmetics, and all three bundles will be offered together at a discount.

Players will be able to punch their way through challenges throughout this event! Queue up into any Unranked, Competitive, or Arcade game mode and earn up to six different free rewards, including the Legendary Mumen Rider-Soldier: 76 skin. Here’s the breakdown for the rewards you can earn:

  • 16 games played – Justice Crash Highlight Intro for Soldier: 76

Metal: Hellsinger DLC “Dream of the Beast” Announced With March 29 Release Date; Includes New Songs, Weapon & Outfits

A DLC for Metal: Hellsinger has just been announced, and it’s coming relatively soon. Titled “Dream of the Beast,” the Metal: Hellsinger DLC launches this March 29 alongside two new original songs by Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil and Will Ramos from Lorna Shore.

Metal Hellsinger DLC “Dream of the Beast: Details:

The DLC will also come with a new gun called “The Red Right Hand.” This is a machine gun that will offer “unique gameplay modifiers.” When it comes to outfits, Dream of the Beast will add three new looks to the game, and these will also offer unique gameplay modifiers, including one that increases your weapon’s max ammo after successful quick reloads.

Even if you’re not planning on getting the DLC, a new Song Selector feature is set to launch on the same day as the DLC, which will allow you to select the new songs as well as others that you like.

“Coming in a free update on the same day as the paid DLC, the Song Selector Feature will allow you to choose any song you want before each level, giving it a totally new flow. We’ll share more about the free update later.”

Metal: Hellsinger’s Dream of the Beast DLC will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If you don’t own the base game yet, go read our review here where we state, “Metal: Hellsinger seamlessly blends tight first-person shooter gameplay with a fantastic soundtrack and rhythm mechanics that will constantly keep you on your toes.”

Say hello to Mixtape: a permanent playlist featuring a rotation of Team Deathmatch, Control, and Gun Run! It’s the perfect way to take a break from Battle Royale and hone your skills in new ways.

We’re also excited to be adding the Mixtapes modes to Custom Matches on March 7th! We’ll also be adjusting the requirements to start a match based on the modes available.

  • Players needed to start Battle Royale Mode: 30
  • Players needed to start Team Deathmatch mode: 12

IMPERIAL GUARD COLLECTION EVENT ITEMS

Unlock 24 enchanting limited-time cosmetics, with Legendary skins for Wraith, Gibraltar, Loba, and more!

All 24 items will be available in exchange for Apex Coins or Crafting Metals and in Imperial Guard Collection Event Apex Packs for the entire duration of the event.

For this collection, we’re keeping our anniversary festivities going by changing the crafting cost of items in this event!

All Crafting Metal prices for event items will be reduced by 50% (e.g. Legendaries that would have cost 2,400 will be reduced to 1,200). You will be able to craft all the items in the Collection Event for half the cost of Crafting Metals. This means players can unlock Wraith’s Hope’s Dawn Kunai for half the cost compared to other Collection Events.

We will also be adding 2 Collection Event packs and 3 regular Apex Packs to the reward tracker, allowing players to unlock Hope’s Dawn even sooner! You can still earn up to 1,400 points per day and challenges refresh daily. All these challenges also stack with your Battle Pass so you can complete multiple challenges at once.

As a refresher, here is the breakdown of Collection Event packs contents:

If you unlock all 24 Collection Event items before the event ends, you’ll automatically receive Wraith’s “Hope’s Dawn” Heirloom!

HOPE’S DAWN

Apex Legends is ever-changing. With the recent fourth anniversary of Apex Legends, we brought some major shake-ups to the game. We are continuing our philosophy of taking learnings from the last four years to ensure the game continually feels fresh and new for players across all aspects of the game.

Wraith’s Kunai was first added to the game in 2019 with the introduction of Heirlooms. Since then, we have expanded what Heirlooms look and feel like in the game. To bring Wraith’s Heirloom up to a place that’s more in line with our recent Heirloom releases, we’re revitalizing her Kunai and introducing Wraith’s new “Hope’s Dawn” Heirloom!

Celebrate the 4th Anniversary with this new version of Wraith’s Kunai Heirloom. Hope’s Dawn comes with a host of new details and changes for our Wraith mains—both old and new.

Acquiring the new Hope’s Dawn Kunai set will give you access to new animations, VFX, color variations, a new Mythic emote, and a Mythic Banner. Slay in style as you hot drop into our anniversary season!

For those who unlock Hope’s Dawn and already own Wraith’s OG Heirloom, you’ll have the option to equip either of them in your menu.

Players with the original Kunai will also automatically get the new animations and VFX made for the release of Hope’s Dawn. Some eagle-eyed Wraith mains might have already noticed we began rolling out the new animations and VFX with the launch of Revelry!

During the Imperial Guard Collection Event, players will unlock the Hope’s Dawn Kunai by finishing the Collection Event. After the event ends, players can choose to spend their Heirloom shards on the original Kunai Heirloom or the Hope’s Dawn Kunai via the Mythics store tab in-game.

STORE TAB

Explore limited-time offers in the Store tab including the “Deadly Relic” and “Spirit of Protection” Bundles and don’t miss the new offers each week like Pathfinder’s “Down Right Fierce” Bundle only available March 7th to 14th or Valk’s “Air Orchid” Bonus Bundle available March 14th to 21st.

There doesn’t seem to be any balance changes included in this title update, but if anything surfaces, we’ll update it accordingly.
