Valorant Update 1.000.021 Pushed Out for Agent Changes in Patch 9.10

Riot Games has released Valorant update 1.000.021, which is for patch 9.10. The title update brings a new armor, a huge chunk of agent balance tweaks. There are also platform-specific patches, which are detailed in the patch notes below.

Valorant Update 1.000.021 Patch Notes for Version 9.10 Released on Consoles and PC

ALL PLATFORMS

NEW ARMOR

  • Regen Shield
    • We want to expand the strategic and tactical possibilities within the VALORANT competitive sandbox by introducing a new defensive option.Regen Shield has been added to the shop.
      • Cost: 650 Credits
      • Damage Absorption: 25 HP
      • Regeneration Pool: 50 HP
      • Absorbs 100% of incoming damage taken before damage to health occurs.
      • After a brief delay, the shield regenerates by draining any remaining points left in the Regeneration Pool.

AGENT UPDATES

  • Cypher
    • Cypher has been a dominant force with his map-wide information gathering and powerful kill setups. Because Cypher’s map-wide info is intended to be his unique strength, we want to target the efficacy of his kill potential.
    • We’re adjusting the Trap Wire to increase the counterplay time window after hitting it, so that there is more of a balance between a well-crafted setup and enemies deliberately trying to break trap wires. Additionally, this will help team compositions who don’t have as much utility to deal with unbreakable traps.
    • Cypher’s ultimate has been extra powerful after adding the second reveal and the removal of time restriction on enemy corpses in patch 5.10, so we’re bumping up the cost to put it more in-line with other comparable ultimates.
    • Trap Wire:
      • Now has a .5 second windup before the full wallhack reveal applies and fades in.
      • Trap wire now has updated minimap icon treatment to better display what the trap wire is connected to.
    • Neural Theft:
      • Ult Cost 6 >>> 7
  • Sage
    • Sage has been feeling weak with relatively low pick rate in high-level play. We want to continue to hone in her ability to stall and slow down attackers when pushing into areas her team controls.
    • With the added dash speed reduction on Slowing Orb, well-timed, proactive casts of her Slowing Orb should feel rewarding and make slows a more meaningful debuff against duelists with dashes.
    • Healing Orb: Self Heal 30HP >>> 50HP
      • Heal time matched to ally heal at around 5 seconds
    • Slowing Orb: Now will additionally reduce the dash speed of enemies caught inside the slowing zone by 50% similar to the Concuss changes in the Gameplay Systems Updates later in the patch notes.
    • Resurrection: Ult Cost 8 >>> 7
  • Deadlock
    • Deadlock’s ultimate will now always kill the target when the timer expires and they are not freed from the nanowire cocoon. Previously, captured targets only died if they reached the end location before the timer expired.
    • Deadlock’s visuals for health on the Annihilation Cocoon and Barrier Mesh have been updated to make their health states more clear.
  • Omen
    • Omen has been a mainstay controller in high-level play for a long time. He particularly shines in his ability to create ambiguity throughout a round with the low cooldowns on his smokes. However, Omen’s ability to place one-way smokes inside level geometry provides significant defensive power with low counterplay. We’ll be keeping an eye out here for how these changes affect the overall controller ecosystem.
    • Dark Cover:
      • Dark Cover will now always fall to level geometry where players can stand similar to other spherical smokes like Brimstone’s Sky Smoke, Clove’s Ruse, etc.
      • This should prevent Omen from placing one-way smokes on small ornamental pieces of Geometry, like the fuse boxes in the main of Split B and only allow him to place smokes where players can stand.
  • Clove
    • Ruse:
      • Ally vs enemy clarity around Ruse casts for both alive and dead casts of smokes have been improved.
        • Enemy smokes updated to appear more red than ally smokes
    • Not Dead Yet:
      • Time to get a kill: 12s >>> 10s
        • This change had been made accidentally in Patch 8.11 when fixing another bug, but the ultimate has been performing well at this tuning.
  • Phoenix
    • Following up from our updates to Duelist in 8.11, we’re taking an opportunity to let Phoenix shine brighter as the bold and confident duelist he is. His updates encourage him to get back to the fight quickly, break into sites with his Curve Ball and reward him for succeeding on entry.
      • Phoenix now applies a Heal over time to himself whenever he touches his flames which persists even if he leaves the fire. This allows him to dip into his flames and then continue to press the offense.
      • Curve Ball:
        • Changed to the signature ability slot
          • Grants a free charge on round start
          • 2 kill reset to generate an additional charge
      • Hot Hands:
        • Changed to a non-signature ability
        • Cost 200 credits
      • Blaze:
        • We want to support Phoenix’s hybrid “jack of all trades” utility value by allowing him to cast Blaze from safety for his teammates similar to other vision-blocking utility.
        • Initial projectile goes through walls, allowing Blaze to function similarly to Harbor’s High Tide.
  • Jett
    • Drift (Passive)
      • Balance-impacting bug fix: Jett can no longer float while suppressed or detained.

MAP UPDATES

  • Sunset
    • We updated global lighting for the entire map. Players should see an improvement in lighting quality and general visibility in previously darker portions of the map.

GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS UPDATES

The changes to the gameplay systems in this patch are to better support VALORANT’s tactical gameplay. The combat report is intended to share in-game information easily. We’re always paying attention to how these systems are playing out, including ways that those systems can be used to create advantages that are counter to their intended use cases.

  • Combat Report
    • While the combat report should be a tool to provide gameplay context for what your impact was within a round of VALORANT, it has the occasional downside of leaking information to you that you otherwise would have had no way of knowing.
    • This happens most often with utility, such as Breach’s Flashpoint or Skye’s Guiding Light: You use your utility and get killed, but inadvertently also discover you blinded players you never saw or engaged with.
    • With these kinds of cases in mind, we’re making a change to the Combat Report:
      • Your utility usage statistics now appear once the round has resolved rather than immediately upon death.
      • In its place, you will see an animated hourglass. Once the round ends, utility usage statistics will become available and persist through pre-round of the next round.
  • Concusses
    • Well-placed concusses should be just as consequential for our movement-oriented Duelists as other agents.
    • We also think this strengthens defensive teleports compared to dashes as more flexible repositioning options to compensate for their weakness in entry capabilities.
      • Concusses now slow enemy dashes by 50%
        • This affects Jett’s Tailwind and Neon’s Slide.
  • Overheal UI Visual Update
    • We’ve updated the way we show overheal shields in the bottom HUD to improve legibility.
      • This affects how we show bonus HP after using Reyna’s Devour and Clove’s Pick-Me-Up.
  • Smoke Visual Update
    • Visual cues have been added to the inside of the smoke to let you know when they are about to disappear to better support decision making. These cues match up with the ones that exist on the outside of the smoke.
    • The following Agents’ smokes have been affected:
      • Astra
      • Brimstone
      • Omen
      • Clove

WEAPONS UPDATES

We’re making some tuning adjustments to weapons.

  • As VALORANT has grown and evolved, you all have learned how to take advantage of different methods of swinging and peeking. Because of the way bullet tagging in VALORANT works (slowing down when shots land on you), shot players are often tagged and then slowed down into the walking state and as a result their weapons become quickly more accurate.
  • We want to maintain this intuitive relationship between player movement speed and accuracy, so we’re opting to increase all moving state accuracy penalties (AKA “movement error”) and encourage intentionality in movement when shooting.
    • The Sheriff and the Frenzy already have different movement error inaccuracies compared to the other pistols, which are valuable to maintain for the sake of their identities.
    • SMGs are unaffected, as we believe that their mobile accuracy is a core part of how the weapons are unique within the arsenal.
  • The Ghost having more bullets than the Frenzy didn’t make intuitive sense given their unique strength and weakness profiles amongst the pistols.
  • Pistol Inaccuracy Changes
    • All Pistols (except the shorty)
      • Moving while crouching Inaccuracy: .1 >>> .5
    • Classic
      • Right Click Running Inaccuracy: 1.3 >>> 1.5
      • Right Click Burst Jumping Inaccuracy: 2.1 >>> 2.25
      • Walking Inaccuracy: 0.84 >>> 1.1
      • Run Inaccuracy: 2 >>> 2.3
    • Ghost
      • Walking Inaccuracy: 0.84 >>> 1.1
      • Run Inaccuracy: 2 >>> 2.3
  • Rifles
    • All Rifles
      • Walk Inaccuracy: 2 >>> 3
      • Run Inaccuracy: 5 >> 6
  • Machine Guns
    • All Machine Guns
      • Walk Inaccuracy: 2.4 >>> 3
      • Run Inaccuracy: 6 >>> 6.5
  • Pistol Bullet Count Changes
    • Frenzy
      • Bullet Count Increased 13 >>> 15
    • Ghost
      • Bullet Count Reduced 15 >>> 13
  • There have been fewer Phantom purchases over time with new maps being released and higher proficiency in shooting. The Phantom and Vandal’s current differences are intended to keep their identities unique while still being relatively competitive with each other. These changes are intended to make the Phantom feel better to use primarily and reduce frustrating instances of headshots doing less damage than expected at different distances. These breakpoints will remove some instances of 140 headshots and all instances of 124 in 1 headshots (excluding wall penetration).
  • Phantom
    • Damage fall-off changed:
      • Previously:
        • 39 damage per bullet (0 – 15m)
        • 35 damage per bullet (15 – 30m)
        • 31 damage per bullet (30m+)
      • Now:
        • 39 damage per bullet (0 – 20m)
        • 35 damage per bullet (20m+)

BUG FIXES

Agents

  • Killjoy
    • Fixed a bug with Alarm Bot where it did not play the proper reactivation ceremony and would instantly reactivate when Killjoy reentered its range.
  • Clove
    • Fixed a bug where Meddle was hitting through level geometry.

Maps

  • Fixed an issue where ambient audio elements were not playing pre-round for Pearl, Breeze, and Sunset.

The Callisto Protocol Gets PS5 Pro Support; 8K Quality Mode, 4K 60fps and Both With Full RTX

Out of nowhere, Striking Distance Studios has released a new patch for The Callisto Protocol that adds PS5 Pro support! Players on PS5 can download The Callisto Protocol update 1.031, and if you have a PS5 Pro, you’re in for a treat.

The Callisto Protocol PS5 Pro Support Impresses With New Visual Upgrades

Here’s what’s new for the horror game straight from Striking Distance’s press release:

What’s New:

  • Full Raytracing in all modes.
  • Quality Mode: 30FPS at 8K with Full RTX.
  • Performance Mode: 60FPS at 4K with Full RTX.
  • Balanced Mode: 40FPS at 4K with Full RTX.

Yep, you’re reading that right! There’s full raytracing in all modes with this update, and with an impressive 8K resolution available for Quality Mode.

While the horror game might not have sold as Krafton would have liked, it’s still a nice move by the studio to implement visual enhancements. If you haven’t picked the game up, go read our review here where we state, “The Callisto Protocol is a good first shot at terrifying you in space. While not as scary as Dead Space, and lacking the same kind of satisfying combat, there is still fun to be had amidst the sometimes enragingly-unfair fights and odd story pacing.” Note that since the game launched, there’s been multiple updates that made the gameplay experience better, which should make this game a good horror game to get at a discounted price.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Update 1.54 Brings 60fps Support to Consoles

Released almost 10 years ago, Ubisoft has now released Assassin’s Creed Syndicate update 1.54 on consoles, and this is a free 60 frames-per-second (fps) patch to existing owners who own an Xbox Series X|S and PS5. Check out the new trailer released alongside more info straight from Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Update 1.54 Adds 60fps Support to PS5/XSX

What’s New:

  • Adds 60 frames-per-second support for PS5/Xbox Series X|S
  • Adds 4K resolution at 60fps to Xbox Series X/PS5/PS5 Pro

About Assassin’s Creed Syndicate:

Set in 1868, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate follows a pair of Assassin twins, Jacob and Evie Frye, as they explore London and build up a gang – the Rooks – to take the city back from Templar domination. The most modern-set Assassin’s Creed to date (present-day storylines notwithstanding), it lets players wield concealed weapons including kukris, cane swords, revolvers, and brass knuckles, and use a wrist-mounted rope launcher to rapidly climb London’s huge, intricately detailed buildings and launch ziplines across its broad avenues. Players can also take full advantage of the carriages that rumble through the streets, leading the Templar-controlled Blighter gang on high-speed chases (and jumping to the roof to fight any pursuers who try to climb aboard).

This is a nice move by Ubisoft, and it might make some Assassin’s Creed fans load up the game once more.

Valve Nearly Went Bankrupt Before Launching Half-Life 2 and Steam; Company Saved by a Summer Intern

In a recent documentary about the creation of Half-Life 2, an interesting story emerged about how Valve nearly went bankrupt before they could launch the game and digital storefront Steam, due to a legal battle with Vivendi. The company was saved by an employee hired for a summer internship (basically an intern), who is also largely responsible for the world of PC gaming as we know it today.

The problems began when Sierra, the original publisher of Half-Life, was acquired by the French conglomerate Vivendi. Vivendi began distributing Counter-Strike in South Korean internet cafes, which Valve did not like because it was not part of the original contract with Sierra. For Valve, however, this was a minor issue.

According to Scott Lynch, Valve’s COO, the company simply wanted recognition that the original agreement had been violated. Vivendi, however, did not budge, and Valve filed a lawsuit, asking only for recognition of its rights and reimbursement of legal fees. In response, Lynch said, “Vivendi decided to start World War 3.” “What happened was a huge pile of counter-complaints that came in,” explained Valve counsel Karl Quackenbush. “Everything from canceling the 2001 deal, to getting ownership of the Half-Life IP, to preventing us from doing Steam.”

Valve was a successful development studio at the time, but not one with unlimited funds. Vivendi had terrifying firepower in comparison and was bloodthirsty, so much so that it explicitly wanted to bankrupt Valve and destroy Lynch and Newell.

Failure was indeed a near-miss, according to Newell, because there was no more money, a fact confirmed by Lynch, who explained: “Gabe had basically run out of cash and was like, ‘Should I put the house up for sale?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I think it’s time to put the house up for sale if we’re going to continue.'”

But then came the lucky break, with the hiring of Andrew for a summer internship. Vivendi had submitted millions of pages of Korean-language documents to the cybercafe lawsuit, hoping to be saved by the volume and the language barrier. Andrew was a native Korean speaker and had a degree in the language. He was the one who found the classic needle in the haystack: in an email, a Korean Vivendi executive mentioned destroying documents related to the Valve case.

He had essentially been ordered by his superiors to make them disappear. With such evidence in hand, Valve turned the tables in court, extracting a very favorable settlement and keeping all its intellectual property.

In short, without Andrew’s intervention, Valve’s fate would have been uncertain and, after the launch of Half-Life 2, the company would have risked disappearing. Andrew saved a good part of the video game world, then, and allowed us to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2.

Report: Sony in Talks to Acquire Kadokawa, Parent Company of Elden Ring Dev FromSoftware

Given the situation the industry has been experiencing during 2024, with many studio closures and worker layoffs, it seemed that studio purchases were beginning to become increasingly rare. In fact, although there have been some other moves by studios, the last big move was Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard. However, Sony seems to be preparing a major one.

According to Reuters, Sony is in talks to buy Kadokawa, the parent company of studios such as FromSoftware, among others. Talks to close the deal are reportedly underway right now, and if successful, it could be finalized in the coming weeks.

PlayStation’s purchase of Kadokawa could be a really important blow to the industry, as franchises such as Dark Souls, Elden Ring, or Armored Core have been some of the most significant in recent years, thanks to the great work done by Hidetaka Miyazaki’s team, which has even earned him the first GOTY nomination in history with an expansion.

However, the purchase of Kadokawa goes far beyond video games. The publishing group, founded in 1945, currently owns a large number of manga and anime IPs. It should be remembered that just a year ago, Sony announced the purchase of Crunchyroll, which allowed it to become practically the most important company in terms of anime worldwide. If the acquisition of Kadokawa were to take place, Sony’s control of the industry would be practically total.

Currently, Kadokawa owns the majority of FromSoftware with a 69.66% stake, while Sony and Tencent hold 14.09% and 16.25% of FromSoftware, respectively. Additionally, Sony already owns 2% of Kadokawa itself. If Sony completes the purchase of Kadokawa, it will gain full control of FromSoftware. However, the true value of this acquisition lies in Kadokawa’s extensive anime and manga IPs. Sony may also continue releasing FromSoftware games on multiple platforms, similar to its strategy with Bungie.

NBA 2K25 Easy Anti-Cheat Update for PC

Patch Update 3.0 for PC, releasing on Steam shortly before Season 3 begins on November 29, will introduce Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). EAC is an industry-leading service designed to combat cheating tools and other unauthorized third-party software with an evolving approach that can counter new cheating techniques.

This implementation is part of the ongoing efforts by Visual Concepts and our Game Security team to detect and minimize cheating in NBA 2K. It works alongside existing measures, such as behavior-based bans, anti-tampering protections, and the in-game reporting system, to protect the integrity of competitive gameplay.

To help ensure a smooth transition, we recommend completing the following steps before installing Update 3.0, which will also install EAC if it’s not already present on your system:

1) Update your PC to the latest version of Windows to maintain compatibility.

2) Make sure your graphics card and other essential drivers are up to date.

3) Update hardware control software (e.g. RGB lighting) to its latest version to resolve potential security vulnerabilities, or disable it if a compatible version is not available.

After installation, you may see a message whenever you start NBA 2K25 letting you know EAC is initializing.

That’s about it. We are expecting a patch to be released for last-gen devices at some point, though Visual Concepts never shares what got changed, and given the last-gen versions don’t have the same features as their current-gen brethren, the patch notes available here aren’t 100% spot-on.

  • Punctured is applied to targets when using Piercing weapons.
  • Upon activation, it instantly deals 5000 damage and reduces target’s armour rating by 500.
  • This status effect lasts for 15 seconds.

Secondary Damage System Changes (Elemental Damage Changes)

  • The Secondary Damage system for applying the various damage types has been revamped.
  • Previously, the amount of status effect charges applied was determined exclusively by the weapon and not by the damage type on the weapon. Going forward, this value is now tied to the secondary damage type and can now scale secondary modifiers on the weapon as well as other modifiers.
  • The overall experience of using weapons and fighting enemies remains and should be quite like the experience before.
  • Example:
    • Firing a projectile with 1000 base damage and 20% piercing at a target with 500 armour and 30% piercing resistance.
    • Armour Rating Mitigation: The 1000 base damage is reduced by 33% from armour rating to 667 damage.
    • Secondary Damage Resistance: 200 piercing damage is reduced by 30% piercing resistance to 140 piercing damage.
    • The final damage applied to the target is a total of 807 damage.
    • The piercing damage is then further applied as 140 charges of Punctured which is the related status effect that will be applied to the target.
