Tekken 8 “Pluggers Purgatory” to Be Introduced, Character Usage Data Revealed

In our Tekken 8 chat with franchise boss Katsuhiro Harada, he mentioned that there will be enforcements applied to the game to combat “pluggers” (players who pull the plug when they’re about to lose to avoid incurring a lose in their record). While the dev team has already issued bans, it seems they will also be rolling out the “pluggers purgatory” when we get a new update this coming week!

This was revealed by the studio in the latest Tekken Talk, where Harada and the dev team talked about putting pluggers in the same boat by having them compete against one another. Alongside that, the dev team will also continue account suspensions after April, and the studio has even relayed the infractions people can do in order to get their account suspended.

Harada also revealed the Tekken 8 character usage rate in online matches for rank Tekken God and above, which should give players an idea on the characters most often picked for high rank play.

In the same stream, the developers also revealed that Tekken 8 will be getting a Battle Pass called the Fight Pass, which isn’t sitting well with gamers.

In case you didn’t know, there’s an update set to be released this April 2. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait on what’s going to change, as the complete Tekken 8 update 1.03.01 patch notes are already available.

Thanks, Schnatch!

Koei Tecmo to Open New AAA Studio to Develop “New Major Title” That Will Be “Independent From Existing Brands”

It looks like Koei Tecmo the company behind games Ninja Gaiden, Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, is gearing up for something big, as the studio is opening a new studio this April that will be developing a new AAA title.

Heading this new studio will be Hayashi Yosuke , who has worked on series such as Ninja Gaiden, Nioh, and Dead or Alive. Hayashi, who was already acting as the entertainment division manager and Executive Vice President of Koei Tecmo, will step down from his position as division manager. Starting April 1, he will be in charge of the AAA studio while also serving as EVP, and as a member of the entertainment division.

As for the project, there’s not much known about it, aside from the confirmation that it will be a new IP, and will be developed in-house, though separate from Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja division.

Aside from Nioh and Wo Long, Team Ninja has recently released Rise of the Ronin on the PS5 on March 22.

Vladimir Putin Wants Russia to Develop Their Own Gaming Console

With all major console manufacturers (PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo) restricting sales of their consoles in Russia, the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, has issued an order to the government, to look into the creation of their own gaming industry, which includes a Russian made home and portable gaming console.

As spotted by PCMag, the Russian government has until June 15, 2024 to decide whether or not to move forward with plans of rebuilding their gaming industry. Local Russian press, Kommersant reports that those plans would not only include an ecosystem of games made by Russians, but also one that would supply its own home console and portable gaming device.

Though an ambitious one, they note that Russia likely won’t see anything for at least ten years.

“Market participants say that there is no competence to produce their own PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and creating such a system from scratch will take up to ten years.”

With all the sanctions placed on Russia as a result of their war on Ukraine, it isn’t surprising to see the country looking at self-sufficient alternatives.

However, given those sanctions include several critical components that make up the consoles of today, that ten year expectation may end up being longer.

Not only that, but would the country’s citizens embrace it? Especially if they can’t get to play titles like Call of Duty, God of War, Battlefield and the like. Not to mention there’s also the online aspect of it, which we’re assuming involves a lot of work as well.

Tekken 8 Battle Pass Announced, Joins Season Pass and In-Game Store for Monetization

While Tekken 8 already features a Season Pass and an in-game store, it seems that’s not enough for Bandai Namco, as Tekken 8 will now also have its own Battle Pass called the “Tekken Fight Pass.”

This was revealed by the developers in the latest Tekken Talk stream, where the studio talked about the pass among other things. Based on what was shown the Tekken Fight Pass will feature new cosmetic items.

“Tekken Fight Pass” – During the specified period, players can increase their level by completing daily and weekly missions in online matches, allowing them to obtain various items.

The price of the Tekken 8 Battle Pass wasn’t disclosed, though we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s priced at $10, which is the common price for Battle Passes in games these days.

Needles to say, the fact that the game is priced at $70 on retail, and there’s already a Season Pass for the character DLCs (priced at $30), and an in-game store that sells cosmetic items, the community wasn’t really thrilled at Bandai Namco offering yet another way to spend money on the game.

A f2p model in a full priced game is beyond scummy.
by inTekken

Regardless of pricing, you must admit WAITING to tell about MTX and Battle Pass is scummy.
byu/MonroeHanlon inTekken

Tekken now has battle pasa. i don’t know what to think…
byu/elfalconverde inTekken

Expect the Tekken Fight Pass to make its debut this coming week, though we aren’t sure what the specific rewards will be.

Outside of the Battle Pass, the dev team also revealed gameplay footage of Eddy Gordo, who’s set to make his debut this coming week! Alongside that, we also got the complete patch notes for the update set to be released on April 2.

Is the introduction of a Battle Pass in Tekken 8 a big deal for you or not at all since you can choose not to buy it? Leave a comment below and let us know.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Took 4-5 Years to Make; Not AAA but AA Says Don’t Nod

If you haven’t played Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, then you might not know just how big the game world is. It’s a massive area that players can choose to scout around for side missions, treasures and whatnot. Not only that, but the game also has more than your run of the mill fetch quests for side missions, with some spanning multiple, interconnected narratives that takes quite a significant time to complete compared to your standard video game side quests.

For something as big as Banishers, how long would a studio take to develop it from start to finish? This was something we asked Don’t Nod in our exclusive interview with the dev team.

MP1st: I have to admit, I was caught a bit off-guard by how big Banisher’s world is. How long did Don’t Nod develop the game from start to finish?

Stéphane Beauverger, Narrative Director: It is not easy to define the full development time for a game, it really depends how you consider it. From scratch? From the very first idea written down with a pencil and a paper during the first conception phase? From the first playable sequence? And even after the release, people are still working on the game, like working on patches. Let’s say that it took between four and five years to create Banishers.

Given how big Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is, and when you factor in the visuals, fully voiced dialogue (even NPCs) and the like, one might assume that it’s a full-fledged AAA game, right? As it turns out, it isn’t, and it’s just AA according to Don’t Nod.

MP1st: For its first AAA project, Banishers is very ambitious. What prompted Don’t Nod to create an open-world game of sorts right away instead of, say, a more linear, single-player game?

Stéphane Beauverger, Narrative Director: Banishers is not an AAA game, it’s a nicely crafted AA game – and we are proud of it. We have the will and passion to deliver a great experience to the audience, hence the large size of the map, and the huge amount of content. The game structure also depends on the nature of the game we make. Story-driven games like Life is Strange or Tell Me Why are more in need of a linear structure. With Banishers, we felt it was necessary to open the world and let the players investigate the mysteries of New Eden at their own pace, and in the order they were more comfortable with. Hence the more open structure of the game.

It’s surprising to me personally that Banishers isn’t considered AAA, as from what I’ve played, it feels like a AAA game. Hopefully, the game recoups enough of its budget so we get another one. Based on Don’t Nod’s comments about a potential sequel, the studio is high on making a follow up as well.

If you haven’t played Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, I suggest you remedy that, as the game has a fantastic narrative, loads of side quests and more. Read my review here where I said, “Prepare yourself for the first surprise hit of the year, and if the game’s quality is any indication, this looks like the start of a new franchise.”

Stay tuned to our full interview with Don’t Nod hitting the site very soon!

Warzone Season 3 Rebirth Island Intel Drop: New Events, Map Changes, and More Detailed

With the advent of the next season of Warzone comes the reintroduction of a fan-favorite map. This morning, the Call of Duty devs shared a Warzone season 3 Rebirth Island Intel Drop, giving us some behind-the-scenes info and more details on what to expect when Rebirth Island returns to the battle royale.

You can watch the video version of the intel drop below:

Here are all the details in text from from the Call of Duty blog:

Warzone Season 3 Rebirth Island Details:

To start, the devs explained what their approach was in bringing Rebirth Island back to a new, modern version of Warzone, and how they tied story and lore into it:

“As we were building Rebirth Island, we had the original and the new version side-by-side to make sure that we captured the same essence, so players return to the map they know and love, while at the same time giving it gameplay and visual improvements to become the best version of Rebirth Island to date. All those little secrets you had in the past will still be there. If a player remembers that they were able to activate the shower over there, well, they still can. That was important to us as players because it’s part of the experience and part of the nostalgia. We made this little detail, people discovered it, and when you wonder, can you still do it? Yes, you can. It’s still there, it’s the same people, it’s the same team. However, just as quickly, you’ll see the improvements (and new secrets…) too.

Rebirth Island was made in the Black Ops era, so it was a good challenge to modernize the old version of the island and bring it to the Modern Warfare III timeline. We always try to put ourselves back in the shoes of the player, so we thought, “What would make sense to a player? It’s Makarov and Konni… why would he be there?”

We needed to find a narrative that would fit with the map, so we iterated on the idea that the island was abandoned for a few years, but now Makarov is back and wants to use it for his own army and his own purposes. That’s why the Chemical Lab has a new Point of Interest (POI) update, because he’s using it for research, for example.”

Resurgence Champion’s Quest and Map Updates

The team also shared some details regarding Champion’s Quest and how the new Rebirth Infil Strikes will transform the map during gameplay:

“Champion’s Quest for Resurgence Mode is coming at launch. The Resurgence Champion’s Quest is hard, extremely intense, and the pacing is high. When you do the Resurgence Champion’s Quest, every second will matter. If you hesitate or make a mistake, you’ll probably fail. We are asking for perfection from players, because we really want it to be the greatest Resurgence Champion’s Quest you’ll face.

Rebirth Infil Strikes will change the map itself. A POI can be blown up at the start of the match, but they’ll be random and occur rarely from time-to-time to mix up the gameplay and offer new rotation opportunities. The Water Tower can be brought down, which will take out a good vantage spot, but at the same time will create cover on the ground. The Prison is another massive Point of Interest to blow up and we wanted to blow a hole in the roof, to open new opportunities from the interior of the prison – and players who played the very first version of Rebirth Island in Warzone may remember the hole in the roof then too!”

From everything we’re hearing, Rebirth Island is shaping up to be a great return to form for Warzone! The classic map returns when Season 3 drops into Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone on April 3.

This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the number of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

XDefiant 12-Hour Server Test Planned, Release Date to Be “Locked in” After

Following on the studio’s promise, we have some fresh and official XDefiant news today! While we still don’t have a release date for the upcoming free-to-play shooter, the studio did announce that XDefiant will be getting a 12-hour server test on consoles and PC.

This announcement was made by the official XDefiant Twitter/X account:

“Defiants,

First and foremost, thank you for your continued support for XDefiant. We are proud to have such a passionate community, and we thank you for your participation in our test phases, including our Insider Sessions.

This game has always been community-first, with player feedback as a top priority. While we hoped to go live by the end of March, there are still some improvements that we need to test before that.

We’re finishing preparation for a 12-hour Server Test Session that will be worldwide on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The goal of this test is to stress our servers and get critical data to prepare us for launch. This is where we need your help to test our servers as much as possible! As always, feedback on your experience is important to us.

After this short test, we expect to be able to lock a launch date and start sharing more about the exciting content XDefiant has to offer in the future!

Thank you again for standing by us. We will be back once we are ready to share more news.
– XDefiant Development Team”

As you can see from the message, a release date should be announced after the test has concluded, which means the game’s release is not that far off (for real this time!). This means that the technical hurdles the studio has encountered  (explained here) seems to be something they managed to finally solve.

Once we have a firm release date for the test, we’ll let our readers know.

[Opinion] Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League Season 1 Is a Literal Killing Joke

Rocksteady has outlined that seasons for Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League will last four months, and yet, with the launch of Season 1, the reality is much worse than those had hoped and probably as expected as many predicted. If you weren’t a fan of the base game, the first part of Season 1 will do little to convince you , and if you were a fan, it’ll probably turn you against it.

For those who have started Season 1 of Suicide Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, you probably noticed that the newest “hero,” the Joker, is locked behind a grind. Personally, I don’t have much of an issue with the character locked behind doing something. I know, the game launched at a $70 price tag, which was for the content packaged in it. Seasons and heroes are free, and the reality of things is that Rocksteady is probably going to do something to make sure they can have players play as much as possible. Almost every other GaaS (Games as a Service) does it, too, and based on the clear indicators, I wasn’t expecting Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League to be any different, especially since they said you could just downright buy heroes if you want to use them right away.

Some system was always going to be in place that was probably going to require time and effort — It’s a GaaS game after all.

However, given how Rocksteady has been so adamant about how they’re doing seasons, and how the narrative would be a focus, many fans didn’t expect it to be this bad.

So, to explain what you are getting, upon booting up the game, you are greeted with a seasonal introduction animated cutscene showing off the Joker. It’s the traditionally animated videos that many, like Apex Legends, Overwatch, and even Call of Duty (CGI), have done for every season. No harm there, I suppose, as it gets the lore of things out of the way, so it’s up to speed with what’s going on in the game at this very moment.

So, after watching this and getting a few pop-ups explaining the season, you’d think that, like many other GaaS titles out there, you would be thrown into some new activities and such. And seeing that Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is more in line with Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers than any other GaaS titles, you’d expect that immediately booting into the game you would be tasked with going on a new story mission and whatnot to unlock and play through as the Joker to showcase what he’s all about.

Well, that’s not the case, not even close. Instead, you’ll get greeted with a locked mission telling you that you need to reach episode rank 35 to play it. This is the “story” quest, which is a reskinned Brainiac Green Lantern boss fight that is slightly more challenging than the original since it has enemies now.

Outside of that, in order to reach episode rank 35, you have to replay the same old missions from the original game that have some slight changes you’d likely not even realize. There are some “new” incursion missions, which are just the other normal missions that weren’t incursion missions before, but it’s the same content nonetheless.

Between all of that? Well, in terms of story, nothing. There’s no narrative arc here to take you through ranking up, no story missions to really explain why we have to save the Joker, or to show off what he’s even capable of. There’s basically nothing. You do get a cutscene when you unlock him, but it’s not even rewarding knowing that the only thing left to do is level him up by replaying the exact same missions over and over. There’s no new content to even bother using him with.

The Joker just exists in this world, adding little to no value to the narrative. Nothing gets pushed forward. There are no consequences or anything in the world that tell you what saving the Joker actually did or how he helped the cause. Characters barely even have a reaction to him, especially Harley, who just shrugs it off. I get it, she’s over the Joker, but come on, for as long as he’s been dead, seeing him again should have provoked some sort of reaction. Instead, she just shrugs it off with a “been there, done that” vibe and moves on. Again, he just exists in this universe, and in ours, like our real-life one, he is just there to add more monetization to the game.

Speaking of what else is just there, the world has changed a bit in this season. Instead of the standard destroyed Metropolis we got in the base game, we now have that, only with Joker decorations planted everywhere. They’re only decorations, like a game doing a Holiday event and having a map in theme with that holiday. Sure, it’s cool at first, but it’s still the same map. The incursions are no different; they’re the same, just Joker-themed.

For a game based around the multiverse, it sure lacks the imagination to play into that. Why would an alternative version of Metropolis, a version that has had its own heroes and villains, be entirely themed on Joker? There’s a story, and you can probably assume that the Joker just turned this place into his personal playground, but that’s not explained and is, therefore, headcanon. You’d think there would be some story to the degree that we got of Lex Luthor from the main campaign, venturing into the Joker’s universe and basically learning all there is to him and such, and giving the squad a real reason to break him out.

I know they explain why the current universe Metropolis is themed after the Joker, which makes things funnier, as he was able to renovate an entire city without the Suicide Squad coming into contact with him once. Not only that, but they also break free of Brainiac multiple times, and yet stronger-willed heroes and other enemies can’t? That’s just being convenient for the plot’s sake, and not in a good way.

I know that’s all nitpicking, but it also shows how barebones and rushed this all feels. There’s no real thought, at least from a player’s perspective, put into this season, and it is the first of maybe many; that’s not a good sign.

There’s new loot to be earned, but that all goes back to the same old loop and replays the same rehash missions. There’s new loot, but nothing new to enjoy that loot on. What was the point of players even grinding out the endgame if the season itself does very little to reward them for that?

A lot of us gave Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers crap, but at least the new characters there added, you know, real story content. Sure, the missions played similar to previous ones (they had some unique story ones, though), but in between all that, there was a story that was unraveling. NPCs would have unique dialogue that would evolve as you progressed, with even cutscenes and such playing out between missions to introduce the character and their motive, along with the new biomes. Stuff in there made sense to the narrative because of how much it all was meant to tie into it. That’s not me trying to say the game was good or anything, but at least you could tell the studio tried to offer meaningful content.

That’s just not the case for the first part of this season for Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. I know that might change for Episode 2, but as far as first impressions go, this is as barebones as it gets. I might not have liked the base game, but I will always give games another go, which is why I hopped on Season 1.

The result feels like something ripped from the early years of GaaS, when most games offered no value and no thought into their content outside of wanting to sell cosmetics and battle passes. For all that Rocksteady made their seasons out to be, the opening act is certainly a whole lot of nothing. If Season 1 is supposed to be our first real look at what the rest of the seasons will look like, then I do think this game won’t make it past this year.

Rise of the Ronin Update 1.002 Slashes Out This March 29 (Update)

Team Ninja has pushed out Rise of the Ronin update 1.002, and this is the game’s first-ever title update since launch. Don’t expect any new features, as the game just got release, and this patch was released for bug fixes and improvements more than anything else.

Rise of the Ronin Update 1.002 Patch Notes:

Size: 1.3GB

Update 2: Team Ninja has released the patch notes for this title update today (yes, after more than five days!) There’s also a new patch (v1.003) released today too, which youu can read about here.

  • Fixed an issue where obtained skills or developed technology could be lost
    – Skills and technology lost due to this issue will be restored when applying this update.
  • Fixed an issue where completion time for Cat Concierge, Pilgrim dog and Gardening in the Longhouse would be counted even when at PS5 home screen.
  • Fixed issues where characters and horses were sinking into the ground.
  • Fixed issues where enemies would become invincible during combat or their models or weapons could disappear.
  • Fixed an issue where some equipment was not able to be selected at “Redesign.”
  • Other fixes and improvements.

Update: While Sony nor Team Ninja has released any patch notes, we’ve added notable stuff from the community.

Unfortunately, Team Ninja (or Sony) has released anything pertaining to the patch, though we expect that to change within the day. We are also checking the community to see what changes have been made, and once we spot anything substantial, we’ll update the article with the info.

Rise of the Ronin was released this March 22, 2024 exclusively on the PS5, and generally got favorable reviews. No word yet whether it’s hitting PC, but given Sony’s track record of pushing their exclusive games to PC a year or so after its console release, we’re expecting Rise of the Ronin to be available on Steam in the future.

Eddy Gordo Enters Tekken 8 Roster Next Week, Gameplay Reveals Moves and New Design

As part of today’s Tekken Talk, Bandai Namco Entertainment has revealed that capoeira master Eddy Gordo is making his way into Tekken 8 this coming week!

Eddy will officially be available on April 5, but will also be out via early access to Character Pass Year 1 owners on April 1 at 4 pm PDT/7 pm EDT/7 am HKT! Check out the trailer below to see his moves and new character design.

Eddy Gordo was first introduced to gamers in Tekken 3 back in 1997, and has since appeared in every game. It’s worth nothing that for Tekken 4 & 5, Eddy shares the same character slot as Christie Monteiro (the granddaughter of the master who taught Eddy).

Chances are, we’ll be getting a title update alongside Gordo’s release. We’ll have more details on the upcoming update and other tidbits of info from today’s Tekken Talk on the site very soon, so stay tuned.

While Eddy Gordo will be a paid DLC fighter, Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada hasn’t ruled out delivering a free DLC fighter to gamers.

Work on New Witcher Game Ramps Up as CDPR Allocates Over 64% of Team to It

While the new Witcher game, codenamed Polaris, is currently still in pre-production, the number of developers working on the title has seen a significant increase as CD Projekt offers an update of their pipeline.

Last November, CD Projekt Red offered a small update on Polaris, confirming a large portion of their development team were beginning to move to working on the new project. At the time, roughly 50% of CD Projekt Red employees had been moved to working on Polaris, while the reset remained (or in the process of transferring) on Cyberpunk 2077 on other projects.

Well with support for Cyberpunk 2077 finally winding down, a bulk of those employees have now made the full transfer, as CD Projekt Red have confirmed (via FY 2023 reporting)  that there are now 403 developers working on Polaris.

This means that roughly 64% of CD Projekt Red is now working on Polaris, while around 77% as a whole are working on a Witcher-related project (Polaris, Orion, and Sirius). Though a bulk of the team is now working on Polaris, the title is still in pre-production stage

Hearing that Polaris is still in pre-production might not be the news you wanted to hear, though it likely won’t be in that stage for much longer since almost everyone at CD Projekt seems to be working on an upcoming project. However, don’t expect to hear, or at least see, anything on the Polaris anytime soon, given the current stage the team is on.
