Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Review – Survival of the Fittest

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora shows Ubisoft at the top of its game, a development powerhouse that has used its expertise to the fullest in this new game. A harrowing tale of heroism and awe, it will guide you through wondrous regions and epic combat scenes that not only mimic the movies to some extent, but also give you some of that exciting emotions of being a pivotal part of it. No matter how long and hard you look at it for imperfections, this remains a remarkable creation that deserves to be thoroughly explored, enjoyed, and appreciated for its beauty and excitement.

A Brave New Pandora

Taking place in the same timeline of the movies, the two that have been released so far and the many more that are in the works, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora doesn’t break new ground in terms of gameplay loop and process. Such thing is extremely rare these days, new and exciting ideas hard to come by, but there’s no denying that it offers an enticing mix of systems that work in the marvelous world of Pandora. There’s crafting, hacking, gathering, affinity systems, and quite a lot more, all synchronized to this strange new land that is prone for exploration and a countless number of stops to stare at the vistas and admire the impressive fauna and flora. This is Pandora alright, a world filled with exciting biomes mixing ingenious creativity and jaw-dropping beauty.

Under the hood, you may notice some similarities with games such as the Far Cry series. A vast open world that slowly unravels as you tackle main and side missions, many places to go and get lost within, a general lack of boundaries to your ambition apart from the natural hazards and enemies that will put a stop to your reckless wandering. The freedom is there, but abusing it is a death sentence and also a way to destroy the flow of the story, so by all means indulge in it, but swiftly return to the regular quest progression for the best immersion.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

Your journey in Pandora starts with a fairly simple character creation system, with male and female choices, and a handful of selections for each element, surprisingly low on variety and impact. The best part is the skin pattern and bioluminescence, but the differences between most options are barely noticeable. Overall impressions on this area are much more positive as you progress, unlocking interesting cosmetics for your avatar – pun not intended – and weapons that finally make you look more distinct, always within the realm of credibility according to the standards defined by the original work and lore. In other words, the characters look terrific and a far cry from Ubisoft’s previous attempt with 2009’s James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game.

Navigating Pandora is something that quickly grows on you, but you start on training wheels as you learn about the abilities of the towering Na’vi you embody. This agile being is fast and resourceful, and knowing how to react and use the environment is something you will be taught in the first hour or so, but the adventure has more in store later on. There’s an innate feeling of parkour, as you run fast and jump far, but as you develop your abilities via skill points, the apparent initial limitations give way to a leaner and meaner justice machine. Higher jumps, mid-air boosts, longer falls without damage, the speed and accuracy at which you climb mountain faces… At a certain point, it all clicks and becomes seamless, as you run and jump like Pandora has always been your “regular” world.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

As immersive and appealing as the environment may be, there is a mixture of perks and hazards to be found. Not all plant life is harmless, some of them with defensive mechanisms that burst as you walk nearby, hurting you in the process. Others will act as natural trampolines to catapult you to unreachable areas, and vines always come in handy to climb or descend, often very useful for narrow escapes.

The sense of magnitude and feeling minuscule is emphasized by the ascent to the skies to finally connect with your Ikran, an impressive journey upwards that seems to go on for a lifetime, the impressive scale sticking to mind in every jump and vine climb, the taming process a lovely and endearing one as we approach it gently, only to be picked when the game allows us too, scripted as expected but no less exciting for it.

Not everything is perfect, however. Some areas are very hard to navigate, with dense vegetation cluttering our vision, no visible ways to climb some cliffs – although this is an understandable middle-ground for the sake of game progress –, lacking a vine right when we needed it the most. This results in occasional big drops and a certain frustration as the marker is showing us the objective straight ahead, but the obvious path rarely is the right one.

Marked Confusion

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

The map of Pandora is rich and divided into various biomes and several activities to engage on, from searching for plants that boost your health and reward skill points, to discovering totems, friendly Na’vi who may give you an assortment of items, eliminating RDA floating platforms, and more. Activating your senses is a good way of finding points of interest nearby, or your current goal in the distance, and setting up markers on the map is a recommended action. However, the way this feature works isn’t intuitive, asking you for double the effort that should be needed. Track a quest and using the senses should highlight it far ahead, but for some reason it doesn’t show up on the compass, forcing you to manually place a marker on the map for it to trigger. It’s unnecessarily cumbersome and a mere quest tracking should show the location on the compass immediately, as to avoid a frequent use of the sensing ability.

For the rest, the user interface is mostly tidy, giving the game’s graphics room to breathe and shine. It’s not entirely practical though and seems to be tailored to consoles and gamepad use, using a scheme that makes it somewhat convoluted to switch between weapons and food, and selecting an item to eat. It feels like it’s asking for more fingers than the human hand sports, a tradeoff for the clean display that you will eventually get used to.

Some prominent places double as fast travel points, which is a great thing considering the ground that you must sometimes cover from one mission to another. But the game becomes a very different thing when you form a bond with your Ikran, which you can name from a short selection – I went with Storm, but it’s odd to see something like Carol there – and also pick its pattern. Now that you can fly, with some natural limitations for the sake of progress, you get a new look at Pandora and its wonderful landscape, with amazing vistas as far as the eye can reach, only slightly hampered by some occasional events of asset pop-in that don’t tarnish the magnificent work put forth by Ubisoft.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

Your Ikran is a remarkable means of transportation and allows you to travel fast and often safe, but you’ll have to be careful around RDA aircraft and aggressive flying creatures, not to mention RDA facilities with anti-air turrets. A specific skill tree expands on the Ikran’s abilities, from collecting fish if you fly low near a lake, to executing some impressive barrel rolls to dodge enemy fire. These moments are truly remarkable, very cinematic, movie-like, and the way the explosion blasts miss you by the skin of your teeth is both exciting and visually stunning, not to mention making you reconsider your approach into these heavily guarded RDA areas.

This brings us to the part where you must free Pandora from the RDA advances by all means possible. Their military and mining facilities are polluting the land nearby, destroying the flora and killing every animal around, with the darker areas and gigantic clouds of black smoke visible from afar. The approach you take is up to consideration, ranging from stealth to an all-out attack, but seeing that you are outnumbered, outgunned, and in search of specific goals to deactivate or destroy, a reckless take is a surefire way of getting killed. Your senses allow you to spot the enemies even behind walls, and your bow can take out a soldier without alerting the remaining ones, especially the AMP Assault units, relentless mechs that take a lot of firepower. Dealing with their weak point is the best choice, using a stun grenade and immediately rushing to break the glass and eliminate the pilot.

After destroying a facility, the land around it heals and you can occasionally return to it and grab some resources, so this is something that is not only required, it also rewards you in various ways, including skill points for completing a mission.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

The Na’vi can use their bows with natural grace and efficiency, along with a staff that throws explosive projectiles, but they aren’t shy with human weapons as well. The rifle and the shotgun are two examples, also providing alternative bullets that you can pillage from the RDA; arrows, however, can be crafted with the natural resources you find in Pandora. Gunplay is fun and competent, not too surprising considering the pedigree of the developers, and some of the organic events add spice to it, such as Pandora’s wildlife entering an RDA camp and spreading chaos, temporarily distracting them from our stealthy attacks.

While on the Ikran, the combination of flying and shooting at aircraft or even foot soldiers is quite a thrill, one that is executed with such excellence that at times it feels like we are starring in our own movie – even the seamless landing is incredibly beautiful to look at. There is also a land mount, the Direhorse, which isn’t bound to you as your Ikran bond, instead being used as you find them and manage to smoothly tame one.

Na’vi On a Mission

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

The vast map at your hands has several activities to distract you from your main quests. Collecting fruits and raw materials to eat and craft is imperative, as satiating your hunger is important if you want to keep your health points replenishing. There is a cooking system in various places, including Na’vi camps and other bases scattered across the land, providing different temporary buffs. A few minigames are included, such as finding the right direction to pluck a fruit, hacking a terminal by following the path in a small circuit board of sorts, or gently following the circles with the controls as you concentrate to a tune.

Respectfully taking an animal’s life is what the Na’vi do, using the resulting resources for their subsistence. Learning about their vital points and hitting a clean arrow shot yields the best results, while using a gun destroys the meat, but sometimes it’s out of necessity due to the threat. This activity ties with the scent idea, as you use your senses to discover animal scent trails to follow, acting as a true hunter in search of prey.

Contributing to a clan with offerings increases your affinity level and opens a world of rewards to you, including cosmetics and items of superior quality from the members. Crafting better gear is another option, with mods to add into weapons for additional effects of various types, and you will need it for the bigger battles ahead.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora Review

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora should take you around 40-50 hours to finish, similar to recent Far Cry games, based on the expectation of players trying to complete most, if not all, optional quests. While a more straightforward playthrough should more than halve those numbers, the plain truth is that the adventure has some tougher challenges where your character level and gear quality really needs to be par for the course. Exploration and Clan missions bring rewards that are valuable to your progression, from skill points to better equipment, making some of these worthy of achieving, not to mention to experience the lore and the new quest chains that you would otherwise miss.

A cooperative mode is available online only, featuring cross-platform support, with the host’s progress being the one that is shown when the session begins. Unlike other games where the guest’s progress is partially wiped, here it is saved and you won’t need to replay any missions completed in coop, besides keeping everything you collected. This is naturally a great way to enjoy Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, expanding on the idea of a clan of warriors instead of the single fighter that we are if going solo.

In purely technical terms, there isn’t much to criticize here, apart from the occasional pop-ins and very rare instances of a few rocks flying above the ground.

A Journey to Remember

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Review

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a mesmerizing journey into a place that is very much unlike anything out there. It’s fantasy and technology boldly clashing and offering a sprawling, remarkable world that deserves all sorts of acclaim. The more you explore, the more you realize just how amazing this planet is, the windy peaks making for some jaw-dropping vistas, the parkour navigation and Ikran flying a contrast that ironically couldn’t work any better.

You may search for flaws and futile comparisons to other games; you will find that exploration can be frustrating when you seem irremediably lost while trying to climb a mountain, or when you are tired of placing markers because the compass doesn’t work as it should. But all of that is forgotten when you realize you are playing a game that is a worthy addition to the movie saga, a tour de force that doesn’t transform the genre but tickles your senses in a way that few games do. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a fantastic way to close a year that more than delivered in terms of quality videogames, an escapade into a virtual place where magic and positivity must persist – so much more could be said about it, but dive into it and let the magnificent sights and sounds speak for themselves.

Score: 9.5/10

Pros:

  • A visually stunning expansion to the world of Pandora
  • A melting pot of ideas and inspirations that work together nicely
  • Great exploration possibilities and vast areas encouraging parkour
  • Ikran flying and shooting is both fun and exciting
  • Cross-platform cooperative mode
  • Good campaign length

Cons:

  • Some asset pop-in issues
  • Compass use could be more intuitive

General

  • Fixed some additional issues where abilities that granted passive effects for slotting on either bar could persist through restricted ability bar effects, such as Werewolf and Oakensoul.

Arcanist

  • Soldier of Apocrypha
    • Gibbering Shield: This Ultimate and the Sanctum of the Abyssal Sea morph now have a limit imposed on the amount of damage they can deal per tick, roughly equal to the maximum size that each shield can reach with their natural scaling.
      Developer Comment:

This limit was added to prevent situations where this Ultimate could absorb tremendous amounts of damage when paired with other shields, allowing for damage values that could kill other player characters in a single damage tick. We’ve opted to go with this cap, rather than trying to enforce a situation where it only deals damage based on how much the actual shield itself absorbed, to avoid situations where you receive other damage shields in conjunction with this ability and prevent this specific shield from absorbing damage. We’ll be continuing to monitor this effect and determine if we need to re-design this aspect of the ability, if it continues to create similar situations as it was.

Templar

  • Aedric Spear
    • Sun Shield
      • Blazing Shield (morph): This morph now has a maximum limit imposed on the amount of damage it can deal, roughly equal to the maximum size it can reach against 6 enemies.

  • Basalt Blooded Warrior: Fixed an issue where refreshing the effect while on your front bar would remove the Major Heroism buff.
  • Gardener of Seasons: Fixed an issue where the last tick of Budding Seeds would fail to apply the effects of Spring or Fall.
  • Monolith of Storms:
    • Fixed an issue where this set could ignore line of sight.  Monoliths will now only connect if there are no obstructions between them.
    • Fixed an issue where this set’s damage would not properly generate hate on enemies it damaged.
  • Nobility in Decay:
    • Fixed an issue with this set’s tooltip cooldown not displaying properly.
    • Fixed an issue where casting Bitter Harvest while having Beautiful Corpse would result in not gaining an additional Beautiful Corpse when Beautiful Corpse was off cooldown.

PUBG Update 27.1 Patch Notes, New Content, and More Revealed

PUBG Studios has released PUBG update 27.1 today for those of you playing the PC version. Consoles will be getting this update sometime later this month. Expect to see a new map and other new content. Check out the PUBG December 6 patch notes down below.

PUBG Update 27.1 Patch Notes:

Live Maintenance Schedule

※ The times shown below are subject to change.

  1. PC: December 6, 12:00 AM – 8:30 AM (UTC)
  2. Console: December 14, 1 AM – 10 AM (UTC)

Map Service

Dev’s comment:

We’ve decided to introduce a new rotation strategy after careful consideration of player feedback regarding our map rotation system.

Rotations will now vary between map selection and random map regions.

In regards to the new rotation for random map regions, Sanhok will no longer be a permanent fixture and instead,

Rondo will now be available for selection within the Normal Match rotation pool.

Through this update, we aim to offer players the flexibility to play the new map at their convenience – and what’s important, we’ve reduced split queues by implementing a new feature that’ll match players who select Rondo along with those who select random map selection in a

single pool.

Recognizing that player preferences differ across regions, we believe implementing two distinct rotations could be more effective than our current single one. And to address some regular community thoughts that we receive, completely eliminating the rotation system or enabling all servers to choose their preferred maps will ultimately lead to affecting essential factors such as matchmaking times, which brings more challenges.

The updated system below has been shaped largely by your feedback and the preference data we’ve gathered so far – we’re eager to hear your thoughts on this new system, so please share your feedback after giving it a try!

※ Please note that PC players can anticipate map changes every Wednesday at 2 AM UTC, while Console players can expect the same every Thursday at 7 AM UTC.

※ In Random Map regions, larger maps have a 22.2% probability of being selected, while smaller maps have a 11.1% probability.

Prepare to be amazed by our tenth Battleground, Rondo. The long-awaited Rondo has finally arrived with Update 27.1! Boasting the most extensive playable area of any map so far, Rondo seamlessly combines traditional elements with a contemporary aesthetic.

Rondo is divided into two distinct regions, each presenting a unique atmosphere that offers either familiar gameplay or new strategic approaches.

Dive into vibrant metropolises, a floating restaurant, serene lakes, a bamboo groove, and more.

Injecting a twist into the core elements of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS – LAND, LOOT, SURVIVE – Rondo unfolds a fresh narrative with increased choices every time you embark on a new playthrough.

※ Even more Rondo features are soon to come in future updates, starting from December 6!

Main Areas

※ Please note, the following descriptions of each region are intended to depict each visual aesthetic and may not have a direct connection to the gameplay elements of Rondo.
Jadena City

This metropolis southeast of Rondo has it all: soaring skyscrapers, colorful neon signs, vibrant nightlife, and bridges that span the city. What’s more, in Jadena City, you won’t find yourself traversing the city with sore feet—utilize the new escalators for even swifter transitions between buildings!

※ Jadena City buildings are accessible up to the third floor.

Stadium

This dynamic stadium once mirrored the intensity of the Battleground, playing host to a diverse array of sporting events and occasional concerts.

Jao Tin

Surely, everyone’s got a minute or two for an opera before plunging back into the fierce chicken battle.

Rin Jiang

In Rin Jiang, located in the southern region of Rondo, you’ll discover a floating restaurant, lavish residences, and a harbor accommodating sizable ships.

Tin Long Garden

Straight from the pages of a martial arts novel, Tin Long Garden exudes a nostalgic charm, featuring stunning waterfalls and massive stone mountains.

Yu Lin

Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty emanating from Eastern classical structures, embraced by verdant trees and a serene, picturesque pond.

NEOX Factory

This is the automotive factory that brought Rondo’s new vehicle into existence! Interestingly, they also manufacture electric vehicles.

Test Track

Introducing the testing ground where vehicles from the NEOX Factory undergo road tests. Our new vehicle also enjoyed some thrilling moments on this track.

Mey Ran

We want more than mud wrestling. Navigate yourself into lotus-filled waterways for a battle of life or death.

Bamboo

There are many ways to relieve stress on the Battleground. Consider taking a break or engaging in some destruction.

Lo Hua Xing

Perched on a sheer cliff, Lo Hua Xing is guarded by formidable statues that seem poised to compel confessions of every sin at the mere sight.

Bei Li

Nowhere surpasses Bei Li when it comes to relaxation, with bamboo and tranquil waterways winding through the village.

Hung Shan

It’s time to exercise wisdom in our necessities within a vast market and warehouse!

Fong Tun

Farming may look all fun and good, but make sure to remind yourself why you’re on this Battleground.

New Features

※ Features below are available only in Rondo.

Additional Starting Planes

Enjoy even more landing options and tactical possibilities in Rondo with two starting planes slicing through the sky!

  • Multiple starting planes will be activated at a certain probability at the beginning of the match.
  • Players will be assigned to one of the two planes at random.
  • Parties will be grouped together on the same plane.
  • The airplane path of your assigned plane will be marked on the map with a red-and-white indicator.

  • Destructible bamboos are placed throughout Rondo.
  • Destroy bamboos using throwables, vehicles, or specific melee weapons.
  • Certain bamboos, such as the very thin ones, are indestructible.
Escalators

A new transportation solution that’ll help further swift transit over short spans like passages between buildings. Navigate and strategize within urban landscapes – make a quick escape or try to get the jump on your opponents. Get ready to “escalate” your urban combats to new heights.

  • Escalators are installed at various locations in Jadena City.
  • Each escalator moves in a single direction.
  • Deployable items can not be deployed on escalators.

Turntable

Add a classical touch to Rondo with our Turntables, or leave the music on to flaunt an elegant yet spooky presence.

  • Turntables are placed throughout Rondo.
  • Turntables are interactable with the interaction key.
  • Once activated, they will play a random selection of music. A Turntable will turn off automatically after playing a single song.
  • Turntables are destructible, but once destroyed, they can no longer play music.

Fireworks

Ignite some spark and vibrancy in the skies of Rondo!

  • Fireworks are available on the starting island and across the map.
  • Fireworks on the starting island will vanish as soon as you board the plane.
  • Fireworks can be launched into the sky using the interaction key.
  • Each crate of fireworks allows a maximum of five interactions, and upon each ignition, it will randomly launch fireworks a variable number of times.
  • Firework crates can not be destroyed.
New Weapons
JS9

Introducing the JS9, a sleek and powerful submachine gun joining the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS arsenal. Chambered for 9mm ammunition, this modern bullpup-style firearm delivers outstanding damage and higher weapon stability, all while being accessible to players with varying levels of experience. Serving as a fresh addition to the pool of Submachine Guns, the JS9 is set to redefine your PUBG experience with its cutting-edge design and reliable performance. Gear up and embrace the versatility of the JS9 in your quest for chicken dinners!

Dev’s Comment: We’re thrilled to officially unveil the JS9, with the launch of our new map, Rondo. The JS9 shares mechanics with other submachine guns but stands out for its remarkable versatility, thanks to its high damage output and relatively low difficulty.

As a world spawn weapon, the JS9 has the potential to change your perspective on SMGs, catering to both newcomers and seasoned veterans.

Stun Gun

When cornered by an enemy or unable to evade a confrontation, the Stun Gun may be your hero.

  • A Stun Gun temporarily disorients the enemy by impairing movement and vision.
  • Weapon slot: Secondary weapon

  • Each Stun Gun can be used up to 3 times.
  • If a teammate is hit by the Stun Gun, their status will be displayed on the team status bar.

    • Max speed using boost: Approximately 115km/h
    • Equipped with the trunk system.
  • Special vehicle skins can be equipped.

New Creatures: Birds and Fishes

Birds

Precious birds have made their homes in lofty cages scattered throughout Rondo.

  • Birds will cry when in the presence of nearby players.
  • If their cages are damaged, they’ll be destroyed, allowing the birds to fly to freedom.
  • Birds themselves cannot be damaged.
  • Birds are exclusive to Rondo.

Fishes

  • The tranquil ponds of Yu Lin and Tin Long Garden are home to aquatic life.
  • These fishes will swiftly flee if they sense any threat.
  • Fishes cannot be damaged.
  • Fishes are exclusive to Rondo.

New Item: Ghillie Suit (Forest)

Introducing the latest addition to Care Packages: the new Ghillie Suit, designed to help you almost indistinguishable from Rondo’s lush greenery.

  • Can be obtained through Care Packages with a specific probability.
  • Available only in Rondo.

Recall System

  • A 2.5-second casting time has been added when looting an enemy’s Blue Chip.
  • The spawn rate of Blue Chip Towers has been changed to 100%, and quantity has decreased.
  • The quantity of Blue Chip Transmitters has increased.
Dev’s comment: Adding a casting time to acquire enemy Blue Chips is to add a risk element to the game, making each action more strategic. At the same time, we’ve adjusted several aspects of Blue Chip Towers and Blue Chip Transmitters to improve the recall process. As we acknowledge various community preference regarding this system, we are committed to engage in thorough communication and proceeding comprehensive evaluations to refine the Recall System moving forward.

Beyond Sunset Hands-On Preview – Deux Ex and Doom Walk Into a Bar…

Beyond Sunset is a retro-inspired first-person shooter set in a cyberpunk world where subtlety goes out of the window. It’s Deus Ex but without the stealth and Doom without John Romero’s silky smooth hair, yet not quite up to the standard of any of the two. Still, we’re talking about classics here and stepping into the shoes of a lightning fast cyber samurai has delivered some sessions of fun, so this is a good omen for the full launch.

Faster Than Lightning

Running on an upgraded version of the Doom engine called GZDoom, Beyond Sunset does have a good feeling to visuals and gameplay, being fast and enjoyable to look at. Graphics are somewhat uneven depending on the zones you are, but the busiest cities are a joy to look at. Other things that come with the engine are the cardboard thin sprites that rotate along your movement, a limitation that shouldn’t really have a place in games nowadays, but it’s here and impossible to ignore.

Beyond Sunset starts as we try to track down a target and take him out. With initial promise of story-based gameplay, this turns out to be fairly deceiving as most of the game is about combat, using our speed to eliminate hordes of enemies with a few moments of respite between bouts. You can talk to characters and even get jobs from a few, but the bulk of gameplay seems to be focused on slashing and shooting through everyone that comes your way, until you reach a computer and open a new map section, and so on.

Beyond Sunset Preview

That’s not to say that there isn’t a story, but the key elements are few and far between, and mostly as you progress through chapters. Other than that, it’s an arcade rush to eliminate enemies that spawn wave after wave out of nowhere, often behind you as you try to find your bearings, not to mention that the game plays with verticality in a somewhat accomplished way, even though this may be seen as a double-edged sword, as you’re often attacked from places you can barely see, let alone reach.

Needless to say, there are moments of frustration where you are caught by surprise as a group of thugs materialize behind you, and lose part of your progress without being at fault. Some set pieces such as one in a nightclub look really good, with chaos everywhere as people try to unsuccessfully dodge the flying bullets, but the visible spawn points are one mechanic that truly belongs in the retro-gaming past.

Mobility is one of the best things about Beyond Sunset, as you zip and slash through enemies using your samurai sword, later unlocking ranged weaponry such as a pistol, shotgun, and rifle. Vending machines offer you character and weapon upgrades purchased with the coins dropping from enemies, expanding on things such as clip size or add-ons. Shooting sensations aren’t terribly exciting, with the shotgun delivering the best punch but the initial reload time almost makes it unusable. On the other hand, the pistol seems slightly overpowered and perfect for taking out enemies at a distance.

Beyond Sunset Preview

Speaking of coins and also health, it’s odd that these items left behind by fallen enemies only disappear after a few seconds, when they are already collected and added to your total amount right at the moment they drop. This can be confusing and is frankly unnecessary as you try to pick up collectibles from the ground that aren’t palpable anymore.

Beyond Sunset could be more player-friendly in some regards, such as the region map. Since the areas are fairly large and connected to one another by various paths, this can be both interesting and confusing, as the map is extremely crude and the layouts all over the place. There is no legend regarding any of the icons or locations that we explore, so in part it’s a guessing game that wasn’t necessary, and the small arrow that marks the player also shrinks with the rest of the map, so if you want to have an overall look of the area, it’s easy to miss your location for a moment.

Another thing that felt like an oversight is the lack of a journal or quest log to track our main mission and side jobs. Since the areas are vast and it’s very easy to get sidetracked, at a certain point it’s more of a matter of going forward than focusing on reaching a specific place – again, something that the map utterly fails to help with, not even bothering with a name for each region.

Cyber Samurai Ex

Beyond Sunset Preview

The overarching plot behind Beyond Sunset has a few interesting key moments, including a stint through cyberspace, but it is mainly an action game with fast movement within fairly vast chapters. It is on track to be a retro enthusiast pleaser but for now is undermined by a few issues that could be solved without much hardship, such as the unintuitive map or the absence of a mission log. Hopefully the Early Access stage will be enough to iron out the kinks and deliver a full-blown experience taking the best out of a period that marked the golden age of first-person shooters.

MP1st was given access to a preview build of Beyond Sunset for our hands-on session. Beyond Sunset is currently in Early Access and launches during 2024 on PC.

Hunt Showdown: Crytek Says Success Is Due to Listening to Community and Reacting Quick to Feedback

With more and more online games being released each year, it’s getting harder and harder for developers to retain players and keep them interested. Fortunately, Crytek’s Hunt: Showdown isn’t one of the games that has that problem.

Released back in February 2018 via Steam Early Access, Hunt: Showdown is now in it’s fifth year with no signs of stopping. If you’re wondering what the secret sauce is to this longevity and success, you’re not the only one, Speaking to MP1st, we asked Hunt: Showdown General Manager David Fifield how the team has managed to keep the game going strong throughout the years when a lot of other games have failed.

MP1st: After all these years, Hunt Showdown is still going strong. We’ve seen the rise and fall of many multiplayer games, ranging from indies to the big AAA publishers, SEGA’s Hyenas being one of the most recent, and that didn’t even release. How has the team managed to find success where so many others have failed? What’s your secret?

David Fifield: One of the key points of our success, which started in the early access days, is that we’ve consistently listened to our community, and we quickly react to their feedback. Our content updates are also a big factor in our ongoing success, like the current “Tide of Corruption” event. The “Tide” series has been very well received this year with our latest event dropping a new Wild Target, Rotjaw. We’ve even managed to break our CCU records this year – five years post-launch – thanks to these content updates. We are looking at constantly improving our events and content drops for future as they are so well received by our community.

Given the success Hunt: Showdown is still getting, players should expect a few more significant content updates in the foreseeable future.

In the same interview, Fifield confirmed to us that Crysis 4 is still in development, and they have a “great team” working on it.

Accessed by road from Transfer Pass, the ZONE OF CONTAMINATION is a polluted wasteland, the site of the abandoned Langston Mine. Watch out for Toxic Hazards and Poisoned Wolves.

NEW TALE: BURIED ECHOES

Continuing the story introduced in SIGNAL VOID, follow the clues deep into the Zone of Contamination and uncover the next layer of the mystery of Rüdiger, the Security Chief, and the strange events hinted at in the last Tale.

NEW GAMEPLAY: THE TRAVOIS

tftft-part-four-launch-announcement-3-1024x576.thumb.png.b04096088eb05f8003b9f368e0643449.png

NEW GAMEPLAY: THE RESPIRATOR

tftft-part-four-launch-announcement-4-1024x576.thumb.png.0ac2925b31c65645906d82d878fe8f4e.png

The Respirator will protect you from pockets of Toxic Gas you’ll encounter underground, as well as poisonous hazards on the surface. Just keep an eye open for the consumable Canisters, as without them the Respirator can’t protect you.

NEW TOOLS: PROTECTIVE GEAR

tftft-part-four-launch-announcement-5-1024x576.thumb.png.996c91864127ed77512949a68989fae9.png

We’ve added Mine-specific protective clothing: a Miner’s Coat, Pants, Chemical Resistant Boots, and a Hard Hat. Each on their own provides a different amount of protection against physical damage, wind, and moisture. As always, you’ll trade these capabilities off against weight and other statistics.

ADDITIONAL MUSIC

New music composed by Sascha Dikiciyan, for the Zone of Contamination and Buried Echoes.

Free Content
This content is available to anyone who owns THE LONG DARK or SURVIVAL EDITION.

NEW TOOLS: INSULATED FLASK

tftft-part-four-launch-announcement-6-1024x576.thumb.png.96ffb01c801e7de023c8df26a6708fbf.png

Coming in a variety of colours and patterns, you can load multiple units of warm drinks like Soups, Coffee, Teas, and so on, into the Flask and take it with you on your next day of trekking through the snowy forests of Great Bear Island.

NEW GAMEPLAY: SCURVY

tftft-part-four-launch-announcement-7-1024x576.thumb.png.43964cebf19996cb9a10175f2803634d.png

Nutrition has never been a big focus for the food and survival systems in THE LONG DARK, but Scurvy is such a big part of the romance of long-term survival in frozen conditions, so we wanted to bring it into our gameplay sandbox.

FIRST-PERSON HARVESTING ANIMATIONS

Harvest_Stag.gif.4cb363b25bba37b25df484fe127ce22f.gif

New animations for harvesting Carcasses have been added. Note that Fresh or Frozen kills will now need to be initially dressed with an appropriate Tool. No more bare-handed Harvesting of newly killed animals.

FIRST-PERSON HAND COVERINGS

Equipped hand coverings are now reflected in-game, as well as hand animations to match.

Known Issues

The team is currently aware of the following issues in the game. If you encounter one of these issues, there is no need to report it to the Support Portal. Fixes for these issues are slated to go out with the first Hotfix following the initial release.

  • Bears will not spawn in multiple locations where they normally should.
  • In new saves, Broth weighs about twice as much as it should.
  • When updating to the latest version of THE LONG DARK (v 2.25) from an earlier version, Broth can no longer be consumed and has 0 caloric value.
  • When starting a new Custom Survival game, Scurvy will be active if ‘Start Gear Load Out’ is set to anything but ‘Very High’.
  • After picking up the Zone of Contamination Region Polaroid, the associated map hint is not revealed on the Survivor’s map.
  • Sometimes when harvesting a Timberwolf with a Knife, the Knife will be missing from the Survivor’s hand.
  • When switching to a fresh Canister with the Respirator and a lit light source equipped, the light source will temporarily extinguish.
  • Exiting the First-Person Harvest UI for Rabbits or Ptarmigans will cause the Carcass and any unharvested parts of the animal to disappear. Harvesting these animals from the inventory will not cause this issue.

GENERAL UPDATES

Endorsements

  • Endorsement Score required to reach level 5 reduced.
  • Endorsement Score decay at level 4 reduced slightly.
  • Endorsement Score decay at level 5 reduced.

Next wave of Hero Mastery courses will launch starting on January 2, 2024, in a five-week event featuring a new course each week with new challenges and cosmetic rewards to earn.

  • A new set of five Hero Mastery courses for Lucio, Mei, D.va, Echo and Genji have been added.

  • A list of bookmarks, course runs and records is shown on the left side of the screen. Players can quickly choose bookmarks from here, or by tapping the indicators on the replay skimmer.
  • A new leaderboard for Hero Mastery courses released in Season 6 has been added. The previous leaderboard will return in a future patch for players to view any time.

Reticle Changes

Extra reticle settings have been added for specific Heroes with multiple Weapon Modes. Players can now customize the modes separately or keep them in sync. The following Heroes have access to the new options:

  • Ana
  • Ashe
  • Bastion
  • Lifeweaver
  • Mercy
  • Ramattra
  • Widowmaker

A new option for the Reticle’s Outline Color has been added, and the Outline Opacity has been separated from the main Opacity. Players who have previously hidden their Dot by setting its Opacity to zero will now need to set the Dot’s Size to zero instead.

Unranked Leaver Penalty Updates

In a further effort to discourage players from repeatedly leaving games and impacting the experience for others, we are increasing the suspension times for leaving too many matches from Unranked modes.

  • Leaving 4 out of your last 20 games played will result in a 20-minute suspension from being able to queue for most game modes, including Unranked and Competitive.
  • Leaving 6 out of your last 20 games played will result in a 4-hour suspension from being able to queue for most game modes, including Unranked and Competitive.

These suspension thresholds only occur when you leave multiple games among your most recent games played. We know this may impact those who are having issues with their connection when playing Overwatch 2, and would encourage testing your connection in custom games or the Practice Range as you troubleshoot your connection prior to playing modes that involve other players. Troubleshooting your connection to Overwatch 2 can be found in this article on our support site 37.

COMPETITIVE PLAY UPDATES

  • MMR Decay now only occurs for Competitive Play at the start of a new season.
  • MMR Decay is not applied to roles that qualify for a rank.
  • Example: A player that won five games and got a Competitive Update will not decay at the end of a season.
  • If a player does not have a rank already who won three games and did not get a Competitive Update, that player will decay at the end of that season.
  • If the player does have a rank, they only need to play one match in the season to keep their rank for the next season.

HERO UPDATES

  • Maximum ultimate charge preserved on hero swap reduced from 25 to 15%.
  • Added Hero-Specific Options to every character to adjust the rumble strength of each of their abilities.

Developer Comments: Swapping heroes is fundamental to the gameplay of Overwatch and this ultimate charge refund mechanic has done a great job of decreasing friction there. It has helped matches feel less one-sided as it functions as a soft comeback mechanic.

However, it also helped reinforce the perception that it’s most always an advantage to counter-swap upon dying, which ideally isn’t always true and requires some consideration due to how powerful ultimate abilities can be.

We are reducing the amount of ultimate charge preserved by a significant amount in order to see if the increased cost of switching meaningfully impacts player behavior, while retaining the benefits this mechanic provides.

TANK

Doomfist

Meteor Strike

  • Now regenerates 75 health per second while in the air.
  • Ultimate cost increased 16%.

Developer Comments: One of the most effective uses for an ultimate ability like Meteor Strike is to save it as an escape in order to grab a health pack instead of using it against his foes. Doomfist will now recover health during the targeting phase so that it can be used more offensively.

Junker Queen

Scattergun

  • Spread reduced 8%.

Developer Comments: Tightening the spread on Junker Queen’s Scattergun will make it more effective at range against small targets and give her slightly more team fight presence before fully committing to getting in close to the enemy team.

Mauga

  • Base health reduced from 500 to 350.
  • Base armor increased from 0 to 150.
  • Head hit volume reduced 15%.

Incendiary and Volatile Chainguns

  • Spread for firing both guns reduced 15%.
  • Fire rate multiplier for firing both guns reduced from 25% to 0%.
  • Damage per shot increased from 4.5 to 5.
  • Damage falloff range increased from 25 to 30 meters.
  • Max ammo increased from 300 to 350.
  • Movement speed penalty reduced from 20% to 15% per gun.

Overrun

  • Can no longer be interrupted by Hack.
  • Damage reduction increased from 30 to 50%.

Cardiac Overdrive

  • Lifesteal increased from 60 to 70%.

Berserker (Passive)

  • Overhealth conversion rate increased from 40% to 50%.

Developer Comments: We got a lot of constructive feedback from players when Mauga was available to try during his free preview weekend, so we’ve adjusted his kit for his official launch to give him the ability to last longer in a fight.

Ramattra

  • Base health reduced from 300 to 200.
  • Base armor increased from 0 to 100.

Void Accelerator

  • Projectile size increased from 0.075 to 0.1 meters.
  • Damage increased from 4.5 to 5.

Developer Comments: Ramattra is quite powerful during his Nemesis Form though his base Omnic Form may be too easy to ignore for a tank hero. We’re adding some power there to even out the tradeoffs between the two forms, with the Omnic Form having even better ranged damage while Nemesis Form’s Pummel can pierce enemy defenses.

Sigma

Experimental Barrier

  • Regeneration rate reduced from 100 to 85 health per second.

Developer Comments: Sigma has very effective defensive options between his Experimental Barrier and Kinetic Grasp. The barrier regeneration rate is being reduced in order to create more opportunity to attack Sigma directly.

Winston

Tesla Cannon

  • Now ignores armor damage reduction.

Developer Comments: This is a special property for the Tesla Cannon intended to increase Winston’s effectiveness against other tanks with large armor health pools. He still won’t specialize in dealing with tanks since his single target damage output is low, but it will be less of an extreme disadvantage.

DAMAGE

Mei

Endothermic Blaster

  • Maximum ammo reduced from 150 to 120.

Developer Comments: We’re reducing the maximum ammo to limit how long Mei is able to continuously slow an enemy target now that the primary fire deals more damage.

Soldier: 76

Biotic Field

  • Cooldown increased from 15 to 18 seconds.

Developer Comments: Soldier’s self-sustain ability is potent and makes him difficult to deal with while he’s in its area. Rather than reduce its raw healing output again we’re increasing the amount of time between consecutive uses to open up longer periods of vulnerability.

Sombra

EMP

  • Ability lockout duration increased from 1.5 to 3 seconds.
  • Damage reduced from 30 to 25% of current health.

Developer Comments: The 1.5 second lockout duration didn’t feel impactful enough for an ultimate ability but generally EMP is more interesting and effective when it’s focused on the disabling aspect rather than the damage.

Torbjörn

Overload

  • Overhealth increased from 75 to 100.

Developer Comments: The health decrease on Overload severely impacted Torbjorn’s overall effectiveness so we’re reverting that change.

Tracer

Pulse Pistols

  • Damage increased from 5.5 to 6.

Developer Comments: This damage value has been changed a few times over the course of OW2 and is now back to Tracer’s original damage. It was previously adjusted due to a couple of bugs with the Pulse Pistol falloff range and spread being much better than they should have.

SUPPORT

Baptiste

Biotic Launcher

  • Primary fire ammo reduced from 45 to 36.

Developer Comments: Baptiste has a high amount of sustained damage in addition to his various survival tools. We would prefer to keep his long cooldown abilities feeling impactful so we’re going to be pulling back on some of his damage potential here.

Brigitte

Whip Shot

  • Damage reduced from 80 to 70.

Developer Comments: Brigitte ended up being the best performing support hero in the game by a fair margin since the last patch. It’s likely a result of more than just the damage breakpoint change that she received but it was a significant increase to her offense so we’re reverting it and will continue to evaluate further.

Kiriko

Healing Ofuda

  • Projectile speed increased from 14 to 18 meters per second.

Protection Suzu

  • Invulnerability duration reduced from 0.85 to 0.65 seconds.
  • Healing explosion increased from 40 to 80 health.

Developer Comments: Reducing the Protection Suzu invulnerability time further will help it feel less frustrating to play against but still enable it to have big play making moments although with a stricter timing requirement. To counterbalance that power loss we’re making Kiriko’s healing more reliable.

Mercy

Valkyrie

  • Activating Valkyrie no longer disconnects Caduceus Staff from its target.

Developer Comments: This is just a small quality-of-life improvement to help keep Mercy healing or powering up her allies without penalty for activating her ultimate.

  • Fixed a bug with movement speed reduction not being applied when firing a single gun.

Orisa

  • Fixed an interaction with Terra Surge and Bastion in Assault mode that resulted in Bastion not being pulled inwards during the ultimate.
  • Fixed a bug with the Tip of the Spear achievement not activating correctly.

Roadhog

  • Fixed a bug with Pig Pen where it would fail to damage some deployable items from others heroes (ex. Ice Wall, Tree of Life, Winston’s Barrier Projector, etc).
  • Resolved a bug that allowed Pig Pen to be placed on basketballs.

Sombra

  • Fixed an issue with Virus not being correctly Amplified by Baptiste’s Amplification Matrix.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Stealth overlay to cause the screen to be darker than intended.

Sims 4 Update 1.83 Drops This December 5

Maxis has pushed out The Sims 4 update 1.83 on all platforms today, December 5, which prepares the game for the “For Rent” expansion. Read up on what’s new in the official patch notes.

The Sims 4 Update 1.83 Patch Notes for December 5

At the time, EA has yet to release the full official patch notes, though we know from a previous announcement that this update is to prepare the game for the launch of the For Rent expansion, arriving December 7.

“Sull Sul! The next game update is expected to be on Tuesday, December 5th at 10am US Pacific time. This patch is for the new expansion pack ‘For Rent’, that will be released this Thursday, December 7th. If you have any mods installed, they will automatically be disabled the next time you load the game. We highly recommend that you do not enable mods until they are cleared by their creators. It may cause game breaking issues. In addition, do not save your modded saves with mods disabled. This will revert any modded features you had in your save file.

If you don’t want your game to update just yet, turn off automatic updates and go offline in your preferred app. If you have any other issues on update day, please use our pinned troubleshooting thread instead of making an individual post. You can also use the comment search bar to search for an issue similar to yours.”

In addition to that, Maxis has outlined a “laundry list” of community concerns and issues they are aiming to resolve in a game update this month (which could very well be this patch or another one incoming this month).

If Maxis releases the official patch notes, we’ll update the article to reflect it.

Some objects require an in-game plan to be learned in order to gain access, while other items are only unlocked for a single, specified character. If not, there’s always next week, which we’ll have covered, so be sure to check again next Tuesday!

Diablo 4 Update 1.27 Ushers in Abattoir of Zir via Patch 1.2.3 This Dec. 5

Blizzard has released Diablo 4 update 1.27 (PS5 version 1.027) and this brings the Abbatoir of Zir dungeon alongside bug fixes! Called Diablo 4 update version 1.2.3 by the devs, you can read the full patch notes below.

Diablo 4 Update 1.27 Patch Notes | Diablo 4 Update 1.027 Patch Notes | Diablo 4 Update Version 1.2.3 Patch Notes:

GAMEPLAY UPDATES

  • Starting on December 5, battle legions of Zir’s minions and race against time in a new endgame pinnacle dungeon, Abattoir of Zir. For more information, visit this article.
  • A full list of possible affixes can now be previewed in the Enchantment menu using the new View Possible Affixes button.
  • Earned Glyph experience from most Nightmare Tiers was increased.
    • Tiers 1-17: No Change.
    • By Tiers 30: From 66 to 79.
    • By Tier 50: From 106 to 139.
    • By Tier 75: From 156 to 239.
    • By Tier 100: From 206 to 339.

Developer’s Note: After reviewing gameplay data and player feedback, we recognized that completing higher Nightmare Tiers was not as rewarding as we initially hoped for, with many players stopping their journey after reaching Tier 50. The experience increase to Glyphs at higher Tiers was made with the intent of incentivizing players to push their builds, making their arrival at Tier 100 feel that much more fulfilling. We will monitor how this change in experience pans out for players and encourage you to provide us with any feedback you have around this system.

  • Introduced further support for NVIDIA Reflex technology. Visit the in-game settings to enable this feature.

BUG FIXES

Accessibility

  • Fixed an issue where the Screen Reader didn’t announce the required pacts for Vampiric Powers.
  • Fixed an issue that made the Screen Reader malfunction on the Steam Deck.

Dungeons

  • Fixed an issue where the Mechanical Box wouldn’t respawn if the player was killed by the boss in the Bastion of Faith.
  • Fixed an issue in the Fallen Temple dungeon where the objective to destroy the Idol of the Fallen Temple could not be completed properly if the Idol was destroyed instantly.
  • Fixed an issue where the debuff effects in the Fallen Temple could be avoided when leaving and re-entering the Dungeon.
  • Fixed an issue where enemies from the Sole Survivor event could spawn behind locked doors in the Hallowed Ossuary, blocking event mastery completion.
  • Fixed an issue where Nightmare Dungeons wouldn’t properly reset after all revives were exhausted when playing local co-op.
  • Fixed an issue where enemies spawned by Animus-carrying monsters with the Summoner affix unexpectedly carried Animus.
  • Fixed an issue where bonus Elemental Damage affixes of Nightmare Dungeons scaled their damage too low or too high for their respective Tier.

Gameplay

  • Fixed an issue where some attacks made by Echo of Lilith would not properly trigger if the player in the Party that started the encounter died.
  • Fixed an issue where the first Death from Above cast by Echo of Lilith had irregular timing and didn’t display an incoming projectile indicator.
  • Fixed an issue where Frostburn and Mother’s Embrace could drop as Sacred and not Ancestral from Tormented Echo of Varshan in World Tier IV.
  • Fixed an issue where Gems could still drop from some sources, such as Avarice’s chest or Whisper Caches, instead of Gem Fragments.
  • Fixed an issue where Rabies cast by Werewolf companions from the Of the Alpha legendary aspect could miss.
  • Fixed an issue where Druids could continuously run into a wall if Trample was used to move towards a nearby wall.
  • Fixed an issue where Treasure Goblins would sometimes become invincible and run away if the player mounted or unmounted near them. (Treasure Goblins have had enough of your bullying, wanderer.)

Season of Blood

  • Fixed an issue where Blood Harvesters could quickly disappear after spawning.
  • Fixed an issue where the Norvaic enemy could spawn repeatedly in certain co-op situations.
  • Fixed an issue where Seeds of Hatred extracted by being Hatred’s Chosen did not count towards a Season Journey objective’s progress.
  • Fixed an issue which made Potent Blood dropped from a Blood Well inaccessible.

Developer’s Note: A previous Hotfix allowed players to walk through Blood Wells to access Potent Blood. This change reverts the ability to walk through Blood Wells, but in exchange, Potent Blood will no longer spawn in the middle of Blood Wells so it can be easily picked up.

  • Fixed an issue where Duriel wouldn’t spawn when the player re-entered the boss arena after respawning.

User Interface and User Experience

  • Fixed an issue where map overlays for Helltide and Blood Harvest wouldn’t display properly when entering a region covered by fog of war.
  • Fixed an issue where the tooltip displayed while hovering over certain items could blink periodically.
  • Fixed an issue where the text describing how to unlock Mounts was inaccurate for players who skipped the Campaign.

Developer’s Note: If they choose to play through the Campaign, players that haven’t yet unlocked Mounts must complete the Donan’s Favor quest to unlock them. If the campaign is skipped, you must reach Level 25 before unlocking Mounts. The tooltip previously mentioned Quest completion only, which is irrelevant when skipping the Campaign.

  • Fixed an issue where navigating to the Season Journey from a Seasonal Aspect wouldn’t open the correct chapter.
  • Navigating the Seasonal Stash with a controller will now be more consistent.

Miscellaneous

  • Fixed an issue where visual effects on armor would remain fully visible while using Concealment. (Lilith sees all, foolish wanderer.)
  • Various visual, performance, and stability improvements.

Hopefully, nothing gets broken with this patch, but if ever a new one is released, we’ll let our readers know.
