Capcom Revenue for Q1 FY 2024 Increases, Resident Evil Strongest With 146 Million Units Sold

Capcom has released its results from Q1 Fiscal Year 2024, revealing a steady and encouraging year-over-year increase. With some franchises going strong from combined game sales and with a significant boost for its digital products, the Japanese company had in Street Fighter 6 one of the big hits of the aforementioned quarter, having sold over two million units cumulatively as of July 7, 2023. The total revenue for this quarter was $311.6 million, representing a 74% year-over-year growth, and a total of 13.5 million units sold, making up for an extra 1.8 million in comparison to last year’s Q1.

A broader look at Capcom’s most popular and long-running franchises gives us a better idea on the success and contribution of each one to the company’s current position. By far and large, the Resident Evil IP is the one that sold more units during its lifespan, with 146 million games finding their way into the hands of players worldwide. Last April, the Resident Evil 4 Remake received the free DLC The Mercenaries, bolstering the game’s popularity even further.

The Monster Hunter series is the second-best Capcom IP in terms of sales, with an impressive 94 million units sold. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak counts six million units sold so far, a commendable achievement for the expansion released in June 2022. Completing the podium is the Street Fighter series, coming with a respectable 52 million units sold.

The remaining Capcom IP doesn’t boast numbers as impressive, but are worth noting as well. The Mega Man series sold 40 million units, Dante and Nero’s adventures in Devil May Cry shifted 29 million units, and Dragon’s Dogma comes far behind with 7.7 million units.

Capcom recently released the dino shooter Exoprimal (read our review), already boasting over one million players in less than a month, and the long-awaited Dragon’s Dogma 2 is under development.

FromSoftware Created Elden Ring and Armored Core 6 With a 300-Strong Team

FromSoftware has delivered its share of all-time greats with the Dark Souls and Armored Core series, not forgetting about the acclaimed Elden Ring, developed in  colaboration with George R.R. Martin. It would be easy to assume that given such a critically and commercially successful catalogue, the Japanese video game company had an immeasurable workforce at this point, with work on Armored Core 6 and the upcoming Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree going at full steam. However, that is not the case.

The studio remains fairly small since its genesis in 1986 and its constant output of high quality games, and managed to develop both Elden Ring and Armored Core 6 with a development staff of about 300 people. This was done by shifting staff around the games according to the specific needs of each project and the period of development – it’s commonly known that a project needs more hands on deck when the release date is approaching, and that is likely to be happening right now with Armored Core 6, which is slated to release on August 25, 2023.

To put this into perspective, HoYoverse’s acclaimed open-world RPG Genshin Impact had over 700 staff working on the game in 2021, with the full size of the studio in 2022 reportedly at 5000 employees. Another interesting comparison comes from Ubisoft, with around 2000 developers working on the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Considering that Armored Core 6 is nearing release, it seems likely that part of the development pool is going to be shifted to the development of the Elden Ring DLC. Or if we want to speculate a little further, maybe some other new project… potentially the rumored Elden Ring 2.

Star Wars Outlaws Won’t Be “a 200 or 300 Hour Epic Unfinishable RPG,” According to Devs

With decades of open-world RPG experience garnered from series such as Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, Ubisoft is working in one of the most anticipated games of 2024, Star Wars Outlaws. This is going to be a huge game with many planets to explore, but unlike Bethesda’s Starfield, it won’t feature procedurally generated terrains; instead, it’s going to take on a more handcrafted approach. The size of each planet, however, is raising some concerns among fans, who are fearing that the locations may end up feeling bloated and empty.

The idea of each planet being roughly two to three times the size of a zone in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is putting doubts in the head of gamers, who are worried about the quality of the actual content. Speaking with IGN during the San Diego Comic-Con, creative director Julian Gerighty and narrative director Navid Khavari addressed this issue.

“[Star Wars Outlaws] is absolutely not a 200 or 300 hour epic unfinishable RPG. This is a very focused action-adventure RPG that will take people on a ride and is very manageable.” The developers added that they plan on making this adventure very rich and dense, and one that the players can explore at their leisure. The mindset behind the locations is that each bustling city, each wide plain has some character to it, something to add in terms of narrative to Kay Vess’ epic journey.

While not naming any specific games, it seems the developers have learned from one of Ubisoft’s own games — Assassin’s Creed Valhalla — in the sense that being bigger doesn’t necessarily always mean better.

Star Wars Outlaws is slated for release in 2024, and Kay Vess’ cute companion Nix is already doing the rounds as the potential next big thing in the gaming world.

Changes to the Lobby

  • Made it possible to join a room even when a Private Battle is in progress if there is a spot available.
    • In this case, the new player will be able to participate starting with the next battle.

This update focuses on making tweaks to multiplayer.

We have improved certain weapons to make them easier to use and modified some less popular weapons to be a bit closer to popular weapons in performance. We hope this will encourage a wider selection of weapon usage.

Additionally, we have made adjustments to some sub weapons to make them easier to use in conjunction with main weapons.

We have also adjusted some special weapons. In addition to similar adjustments mentioned above to encourage a wider selection of usage, we’ve dialed back the performance of some special weapons that had been modified in the past. Their specifications are now closer to the original weapon specifications.

We plan on releasing the next update at the end of the current season. It will focus primarily on further weapon balance adjustments and adding features for the new season starting in September.

Here’s everything you can expect from the new season of COD Mobile:

COD Mobile Season 7 New Content:

From August 3 to August 22, complete Event Quests to earn Event XP on the special event rewards track. Complete the rewards track to earn 6 total packs (2 Standard Packs, 1 Golden Standard Pack, 1 Festival of Legends Pack, and 2 TITANS Packs) and a Death Knight Hero Skin!

New to Core: Paladin Auras

As part of our continued efforts to be more flexible with the Core Set throughout the year, two new cards are being added to Paladin’s Core Set with Patch 27.0.

The Auras have an effect that lasts for a few turns after you play the card. These two cards will be automatically added to the free Core Set with Patch 27.0. There is also one more Aura card in the TITANS set that can be obtained through all normal means once the expansion is live. We plan to continue exploring this design space for Paladin in future expansions as well.

Battlegrounds Updates

New Quest Rewards

  • Turbulent Tombs: Add [a specified “Deathrattle” minion] to your hand. Your Deathrattles trigger an extra time.

  • Gilnean War Horn: Add [a specified “Battlecry” minion] to your hand. Your Battlecries trigger an extra time.

    • Endless Blood Moon; Sturdy Shard; Volatile Venom; Doppelganger’s Locket; Hidden Treasure Vault
  • The following Quest Rewards are now easier to earn:
    • Boom Squad; Map of the Unknown; Ice Sickle; Bloodsoaked Tome; Snicker Snacks; Scepter of Guidance; Timeline Acceleration; Ritual Dagger; Anima Bribe; Mirror Shield

  • Queen Wagtoggle now has 13 Armor at higher ratings; still has 7 Armor at lower ratings

Minion Update

  • New (regular): Windfury. Divine Shield. The first time this survives damage, gain Divine Shield.
  • New (golden): Windfury. Divine Shield. The first two times this survives damage, gain Divine Shield.
  • Dev Comment: This is a word change update for clarity, since this was the only card in Battlegrounds using the Frenzy keyword. There is no functional change to the normal version, but the Golden version is now stronger.

Wording Updates

Text-only updates have been made in several instances across Battlegrounds for consistency and better templating: “Tavern Tier” has been shortened to “Tier”; “Bob’s Tavern” has been changed to “the Tavern”; “add to your hand” has been shortened to “get”; and “minion type” has been shortened to “type” when “minion” has already been previously mentioned in the text. None of these changes are gameplay-impacting changes.

Duels Updates

Season Update

On July 25, the current Duels season will end, ratings will be reset, and current runs will be concluded. At that time, Ashes of Outland will be added to deckbuilding and card pool offerings. TITANS will also become available for all card pools at that time, but will not be available for initial deckbuilding until the launch of the expansion on August 1.

Hero Pool Update

Diablo is no longer in the eligible hero pool.

Card Pool Update

  • Rattlegore is no longer banned from all card pools.
  • Mo’arg Artificer and Kael’thas Sunstrider are now banned from all card pools.
  • The following cards do not appear in card buckets and can’t be Discovered or randomly generated: Akama, Bulwark of Azzinoth, Incanter’s Flow, and all 11 “Titan” minions.

On July 25, with Patch 27.0, all current Arena runs will end and a new Arena season will begin. The eligible sets will rotate so that the following sets will make up the Arena card pool:

  • Core
  • Saviors of Uldum
  • Ashes of Outland
  • Madness at the Darkmoon Faire
  • March of the Lich King
  • Path of Arthas
  • Festival of Legends

Enter the Arena to play the new TITANS cards before the expansion launches!

Armored Core 6 Game Length Reported at 50-60 Hours, Longer Than Any Other Numbered AC Game

Armored Core 6, Japanese developer FromSoftware’s upcoming sci-fi mech game, will apparently be 50 to 60 hours long. This makes Armored Core 6’s game length comparably longer than other Armored Core entries.

The information was revealed in an Armored Core 6 video preview by Fextralife, According to the video, in the three hours that they were able to play Armored Core 6, they were able to finish the game’s first 11 missions, which also included a boss battle. While this may imply that Armored Core 6 will contain over a hundred missions to complete, it’s also possible that the overall mission length will increase as time goes on.

For reference, here’s the game length for all other numbered Armored Core games, taken from HowLongToBeat:

Armored Core

  • Main Story – 8 Hours
  • Main + Sides – 9 Hours
  • Completionist – 12½ Hours

Armored Core 2

  • Main Story – 11½ Hours
  • Main + Sides – 13 Hours
  • Completionist – 14½ Hours

Armored Core 3

  • Main Story – 12½ Hours
  • Main + Sides – 17 Hours
  • Completionist – 20 Hours

Armored Core 4

  • Main Story – 8½ Hours
  • Main + Sides – 11½ Hours
  • Completionist – 17 Hours

Armored Core V

  • Main Story – 12½ Hours
  • Main + Sides – 20½ Hours
  • Completionist – 41 Hours

While Armored Core 5 is much longer than its predecessors at 41 hours for completionists, Armored Core 6 clocks in with at least 10 hours more, and we’re still not sure if that game length is for completionists or just for the main story.

You can watch the full video where the info was revealed below:

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon launches this August 25 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Devs Looking Into “More Traditional DLC” Plans Rather Than a Battle Pass

If you assumed that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre multiplayer game by Gun Interactive will feature a Battle Pass, which seems to be the norm for online multiplayer games these days, you’re in for a surprise, as the devs’ post-launch plans does not include that.

Speaking to MP1st, Gun Interactive confirmed that instead of a Battle Pass, the studio is looking into a “more traditional DLC” plan.

MP1st: Will we be getting the traditional Battle Pass micro-transaction model that’s in almost all multiplayer games these days?

A: We’ve discussed this internally. There’s pros and cons to that model. As of right now we’re looking at a more traditional DLC plan without a pass.

For those unaware, the Battle Pass monetization initiative has been the most popular choice these days when it comes to online games, and has been widely used by the Call of Duty franchise, Diablo 4, and more. With Gun Interactive’s more traditional approach, this sounds like the studio is looking to sell DLC packs for characters, levels and whatnot more, which — depending on who you ask — can be either a good or bad thing.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will be released this August 18 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned to our full interview hitting the site soon.

Quantum Error: PS4 Version Canceled, PC Version Planned, Release Date Announcement “Very Soon”

It looks like Quantum Error, the horror first-person shooter title by TeamKill Media, won’t be getting a PS4 version anymore, though a PC version seems to be in the works. Quantum Error’s PS4 version was scrapped as it required too much work in downgrading and changing assets, among other things.

The statement comes a few months after the devs stated that they would not sacrifice the PS5 version of the game to bring it to PS4. Here’s the full tweet from the official Quantum Error Twitter account:

A couple of replies to comments in the tweet also reveal a couple of things. Firstly, a PC version of Quantum Error is being worked on, though the devs don’t have a solid timeline for it just yet.

Another reply also revealed that an Xbox One version of the game was never in the works, which meant that the game would only be available via the PS4 for last-gen consoles had it been continued.

Finally, when asked about a release date for Quantum Error, the account replied that there would be one announced “very soon.”

Quantum Error will now be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with a possible PC port post-launch.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Venom’s Design Approved by Character’s Co-Creator

Todd McFarlane, co-creator of the character Venom from the Marvel comics, seems to like Insomniac Games’ rendition of the symbiote. McFarlane shared his thoughts on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Venom and how he looked in the latest trailer.

You can find the interview below for reference.

McFarlane commented on Venom’s look in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, such as his size. “I intentionally made him bigger than an average superhero,” McFarlane commented. “If you now put an average person, he’s at least 20, 30, 40, 50% bigger than an average person, even Iron Man, then I go, ‘Yes, for me, that’s a giant point.'”

McFarlane also commented on Venom’s teeth, saying that he liked its more natural, uneven design. “I like it when the teeth aren’t all lined up and they look like these are like monster teeth,” he stated. “Because animal teeth, they don’t go to dentists, so they don’t straighten out their teeth. I actually like that they made a big bold spider on him, way bolder than the one that I’d put on him.”

When asked about Venom’s tongue, McFarlane revealed that the design was done by Erik Larsen, another designer for Venom, and not him. “I give credit to the tongue to Erik Larsen, he was the guy that followed me,” McFarlane admitted, “Honestly, I’m not much of a tongue guy.” While he didn’t have a very strong opinion on whether he liked Venom’s tongue or not, he did say that combined with the jagged teeth, Venom looked very “vicious” in the trailer and that he didn’t come “to play nice.”

As a final interesting tidbit, McFarlane also revealed that he originally designed Venom without knowledge of Eddie Brock, but the design ended up staying around anyway. Here’s the full quote:

When I created [Venom], the black costume existed, so I just went, ‘Oh, [it] comes from some alien planet, so I’m just gonna make this big hulking gorilla guy and he’s gonna look like an alien with claws and teeth and all his weird stuff. And then later the writer says, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be Eddie Brock.’ Information I coulda used earlier, right? But then they had approved the design and I go ‘I don’t wanna change it.’ If they can do Bruce Banner to Hulk, why can’t they do Eddie Brock to Venom? So it was like, ‘Let’s just keep it, and somehow he just gets swallowed up in it and whatever else’ and we were able to do it, but I think they did a nice job on making him feel like a monster. To me, I’m a big monster fan, so…

The video ended with McFarlane giving the design his own seal of approval, saying that he’d rather play as Venom over “that skinny Peter Parker dude.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings out this October 20 exclusively on the PS5.

Report: Assassin’s Creed Red Release Planned for 2024

Ubisoft is finally answering the call of many Assassin’s Creed fans by taking the series to feudal Japan. With Assassin’s Creed Red (currently a codename and subject to change), the series should see a major jump from the previous games, including 2020’s Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, while shaping up the future of the franchise with the goal of delivering the best open-world RPG games.

While the details are scarce and many players were expecting Assassin’s Creed Red to be very early in development, again by the skilled hands of Ubisoft Quebec, it turns out that the release date could in fact be pinned down for 2024. At least, this is what can be gathered by the words of Arisa Lagunzad, responsible for Business Development & Brand Partnership at Ubisoft. Her statement can be found on a LinkedIn post that you can see below.

Assassin's Creed Red Release Planned for 2024

The post doesn’t directly imply an Assassin’s Creed Codename Red release date for 2024, but it’s easy to assume that much is planned. However, take it with a grain of salt until an official confirmation from Ubisoft arrives in the near future. The other game detailed as part of this new Assassin’s Creed Infinity philosophy for the series is called Assassin’s Creed Hexe and is rumored to unfold in Central Europe during the 16th century.

Before the release of Assassin’s Creed Codename Red we are going to get Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Set in Baghdad and said to be inspired by the direction of the game that kickstarted the franchise, and is out this Oct. 12 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
