Star Wars Battlefront Collection at Overwhelmingly Negative Reviews on Steam; Players Warning Not to Buy

Star Wars Battlefront Collection’s rocky launch is unsurprisingly being met with negative reactions, as PC players have flooded Steam’s discussion board, warning others to stay away and leaving some rather harsh reviews.

As reported earlier today, the highly acclaimed Star Wars Battlefront games have been re-released in an all-new collection bundle. With players having fond memories of the original releases, many went in with high expectations, though they quickly discovered that the games were plagued with many issues.

The most common, as we outlined in our Star Wars Battlefront Collection known issues piece, was the lack of servers that left many unable to play online. Beyond that, other bugs, some new, while some carried from the original releases, have also been plaguing players. Many have also noted the lack of modern-day features and general quality-of-life improvements, calling this re-release a lackluster port.

So, unsurprisingly, players have begun requesting refunds, not just on Steam but on other platforms as well. Even less surprising is that this has also prompted them to leave bad reviews of the game, with the collection now mostly negative with over 1400 reviews. Mind you, this is Steam, meaning they’re verified purchases, not just players review-bombing the title, as we’ve seen on Metacritic.

Over on the Battlefront subreddit, multiple discussions and threads have cropped up regarding refunding the game or how to process a refund on the platform where the game was bought.

Any chance PSN will accept a refund request? The collection is a broken product

What should have been a celebration of classics has quickly taken a turn for the worse. While most weren’t expecting any remake with these collections, there were expectations that this would be more than just a simple resolution bump, as, while fun, the original releases had their fair share of issues. That sadly wasn’t the case, and while the titles were good for their time, seeing them back with little to no other improvements already makes this collection feel rather dated. This criticism was also something that was brought up in our Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection review.

Hopefully, Aspry will see all of this feedback and work on a patch to resolve most of these issues. It’s heartbreaking to see such beloved titles handled in such a way.

Embracer Group Sells Off Saber Interactive; 4A Games and Zen Studios May Follow

Reports of Embracer Group selling off Saber Interactive first popped up a few weeks ago, and today, the company has officially confirmed the news, with expectations that 4A Games and Zen Studios will also be part of the sale.

In a statement published today by Embracer, the publisher giant confirmed that Saber Interactive will be sold to Beacon Interactive, which is controlled by Saber’s co-founder, Matthew Karch. The company will be sold for $275 million USD, and it will include Nimble Giant, DIGIC, Saber Interactive Inc., Fractured Byte, Sandbox Strategies, Mad Head Games, Slipgate, New World Interactive, and 3D Realms.

Additionally, Embracer is offering 4A Games and Zen Studios as purchasable options for a limited time to Beacon Interactive, though it retains control over the studios for now.

“I am pleased that we have found a win-win solution for Embracer and the parts of Saber that now will leave us. This transaction puts both companies in a stronger position to thrive going forward. Embracer is now able to discontinue all operations in Russia, according to a previous board decision, while safeguarding many developer jobs under new independent ownership. At the same time, we keep key companies, valuable IPs and future publishing rights. Cash flow is immediately improved, and we remain committed to reducing net debt. The transaction yields additional headroom to amortize debt in accordance with existing bank agreements and will improve financial flexibility. This is the first transaction of the previously mentioned structured processes and marks a small but important step in our journey to transform Embracer into the future for the benefit of all employees, gamers, and shareholders,” says Lars Wingefors, co-founder and Group CEO of Embracer.

“Over the past four years, I have been proud to be part of Embracer’s amazing transformation into one of the leading game companies in the world. As part of the company’s efforts to reorganize for a changed industry and geopolitical challenges, we jointly felt it was the right decision for both Embracer and the core of Saber to part ways. This divestment leaves both parties in much better positions to grow our respective businesses. I will continue to remain a large, long-term shareholder of Embracer and we will remain partners on several ongoing and future projects. This transaction also safeguards the livelihoods of hundreds of professionals, many of whom I have worked with for over two decades,” says Matthew Karch, co-founder of Saber Interactive and director of Beacon Interactive.

This is certainly great news, as before this, Embracer has had a string of layoffs and studio closures, leaving thousands jobless over the last year. Though this does not mean that employees from either of the sold studios are protected from being laid off, this news should give employees a bit of a relief knowing that it won’t be directly because of the ongoing restructuring at Embracer.

Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection Servers Hammered, Known Issues Listed

In case you didn’t know, developer Aspyr just released the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection yesterday, and it even features the multiplayer! Unfortunately, that portion of the game has not been running well, as the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection servers have been hammered, and there’s not a lot of ’em available as well, which has infuriated buyers.

Multiple buyers of the game are not happy, with some calling the ports “lazy” and more. Here are some of the reactions about the game’s servers and multiplayer in general:

This is one of the laziest ports ive ever seen.
byu/ninjaman68 inbattlefront

Multiplayer is awful (Xbox)
byu/Realtalk74 inbattlefront

What a Disappointment
byu/antipasta68 inbattlefront

What a Disappointment
byu/antipasta68 inbattlefront

That goes on and on on both Twitter and the game’s subreddit. Basically, the Battlefront Classic Collection servers have been un-joinable, and the game crashes so often as well.

We’ve also compiled some of the issues players have reported so far (from both the Reddit community and Steam).

Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection Known Issues:

  • NPC commands not working
  • Game client crashing (consoles and PC)
  • Crashing when searching by map
  • Randomly kicks players out of multiplayer matches
  • Camera controls need a lot of work
  • Unable to connect to multiplayer matches
  • Blasters and sabers audio issues
  • Lightsaber hit registration not working
  • Artefacting on Hoth
  • Max sensitivity bugs
  • Model and texture issues
  • Frame rate drops
  • Rubberbanding and extreme lag during online matches
  • Notable bugs from the original releases (no quality of life improvements)
  • No inverted controls
  • Server tickrate bug where it’s not running at the correct frame rate

If you’ve yet to play or buy the game, we suggest holding off on it for now. Our review can be read here where we don’t hold back on what’s wrong with it so far. Our own Jack Breitenbach states, “The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection is a delightful and painful romp through old stomping grounds that will likely lose its short-lived luster in a matter of weeks. The good old days are not as good as they seem. It’s time to let the past die.

The Finals Update 2.0.0 for Version 1.000.021 Brings Season 2 This March 14

The day has come, contestants! The Finals update 2.0.0 (PS5 update version 1.000.021) is now live, and this brings Season 2 into the game! There’s a new map called Horizon, a new game mode called Power Shift and more! Read on for the official The Finals Season 2 patch notes.

You can read our early hands-on impressions of Season 2’s Power Shift mode, right here.

The Finals Update 2.0.0 for Season 2 Patch Notes:

PS5 Update Version: 1000.021

Here’s what to expect:

WELCOME TO SYS$HORIZON

CNS has introduced a new map: HORIZON. It’s a glitchy, colorful cityscape that’s partially loaded with floating geometric shapes. You’ll have plenty to explore and a night-time mode that glows under a neon sun.

POWER SHIFT

Power Shift is our brand new two-team mode. It’s a casual 5v5 where you’ll compete to escort a physical platform through the arena as it rips through anything in its path.

With short respawn times and the ability to switch contestants on respawn, you’ll be able to balance your team on the fly, as you fight to control the platform and be the first to deliver it across the finish line!

LEARN THE ROPES

An all-new tutorial set in the streets of Monaco lets new players learn the ropes, and provides a testing ground to try out gadgets, specializations, and weapons! Your friends who are new to the game can get onboarded quickly, and you can get a refresher if you’ve been away.  It’s well worth a visit, even for the most seasoned contestants!

LOCK AND LOAD

FAMAS

The FAMAS —a burst-fire assault rifle — will go to the Medium build. The rifle retains most of its damage even at longer ranges, making it excellent for keeping enemies at bay

93R

The 93R — a burst-fire handgun — is the newest edition to the Light loadout. It fires in 3-round bursts and is ideal for close- to medium-range engagements.

KS-23

And lastly, for the Heavy build,  the KS-23 — stripped-down slug round shotgun. It requires precision to handle effectively, but zooming in and predicting the enemy’s movement will help.

JOIN CNS

DEMATERIALIZER

A new specialization for the Medium build that temporarily erases physical surfaces, like walls and ceilings. It allows players to see, shoot, and pass through solid surfaces. You can create new passageways and close them back up again. Each action costs a charge, and the Dematerializer can hold up to 3 charges at once.

GATEWAY

A pair of limited-range deployable portals for the Light build. When both are thrown, contestants and objects can move between the two locations. Anyone can use a portal, but can’t see or shoot through them! Thrown items and projectiles can also travel through the Gateways, but not objectives like the Cashout stations!

ANTI GRAVITY CUBE

A deployable cube for the Heavy build that manipulates gravity in its immediate area. When activated, it lifts contestants and objects up and can be used as both a traversal tool and as an obstacle for enemy teams! Be mindful that destroying the cube will remove the Reverse Gravity zone!

DATA RESHAPER

The Data Reshaper transforms objects in the arena into something else entirely. This gadget for the Medium build will transform deployed equipment from other contestants into harmless arena props.

UNLOCK THE BATTLE PASS

The Season 2 Battle Pass has 12 pages and 96 rewards — each page offers a theme that is our love letter to the early days of gaming! With each level, you’ll earn rewards from seasonal sponsors, and even some unsanctioned prizes from CNS.

Please don’t forget to snag the Seasonal bundle first, which provides a rebate on your purchase so you can get the exclusive Season 2 items.

BECOME A PROFESSIONAL

The Battle Pass isn’t the only way to earn rewards — we’re also introducing the new Career Circuit!

Each week, a new set of contracts will unlock in the career menu. These allow contestants cash in contracts and earn free rewards! At the end of each weekly set will be a sponsored prize. You’ll be able to fulfill contracts at your own leisure, but you’ll need to wait for each new circuit to unlock throughout the entire length of the season. The Career Circuit can increase your skill and coax you into trying a variety of new things throughout the season!

Of course, filling in your weekly career page will get you a free gift a week, but it also counts toward your Battle Pass progress so players can grind for completion, even late to the game!

BETTER MATCHES

We’ve given League ranking a major overhaul for Season 2!

The goal is to provide a much better quality experience when playing in the ranked tournament. You’ll get your starting rank based on your first eight rounds and from there, you’ll move up and down based on your performance. Contestants can expect to land between bronze and gold at first, and climb the ranks from there.

As you may know, we need a lot of people and time to test a system like this, so you should expect more tweaks and changes throughout the season, as we see it in action!

PRIVATE MATCHES

We’re also introducing our first version of Private Matches. In this early, barebones version, you’ll be able to organize matches with a minimum of six friends to play Bank It or QuickCash. We plan to expand this tool throughout the season with more features, so stay tuned! As with everything, we’ll rely on your experiences and your feedback. So don’t forget to give it a try!

NEW ABILITIES & EQUIPMENT

NEW MAP

  • Added the standard issue of the new SYS$HORIZON map

NEW GAME SHOW  EVENT

  • Added the Retro Invasion 82 event to every map

NEW SPECIALIZATION

  • Dematerializer

    • Enables the user to create temporary holes in the arena construction

NEW GADGETS

  • Gateway

    • Throw out two Gateways to create a spatial link between them, enabling quick traversing through the arena

  • Data Reshaper

    • A “prop-swap” executable that lets players transform objects and deployed equipment from other contestants into canisters or decor

  • Reverse Gravity Cube

    • A throwable Cube that creates a limited-area gravity field where anything not nailed to the ground will elevate toward the sky

NEW WEAPONS

  • FAMAS – Burst Rifle – Medium

  • 93R – Burst Pistol – Light

  • KS-23 – Slug Shotgun – Heavy

BALANCE CHANGES

  • Throwables, Explosives & “Nukes”

    • Added diminishing returns on damage from ‘nukes’ i.e. throwable objects that carry C4s, Breach Charges, or mines

      • For each source of explosive damage, including the throwable and starting with the highest, a damage modifier is applied to each instance in the sequence of 60% / 40% / 30% / 20%

    • Gas Canisters now immediately start to steer off their direct trajectory (aka “wobble”) when they have attachments

    • When picking up throwable objects with explosive gadgets attached (i.e. ‘nukes’ and ‘snukes’), said explosives will become un-armed

      • When the player lets go of the carried object, a re-arming timer for the explosives starts

    • The explosions from C4, Breaching Charges, and all mines that detonate while unprimed now deal 20% of their original damage

    • Decreased the health value of Propane Gas Tanks from 250 to 120

    • Fixed a bug with Fuel Barrels where they sometimes wouldn’t ignite when taking damage, for example from explosions or bullets

      • Dev Comment: Nukes were a hot-button issue in Season 1. The previous tuning made nukes exceed the intended time to kill by a large margin. Since our initial changes weren’t substantial enough to alter this tactic, we’ve added more ways to balance nukes moving forward.

  • Toxic Gas

    • Added a delay to the application of damage. Damage will now start to tick 0.5s  after the player enters the gas cloud

    • Added new functionality that causes damage to ramp up gradually over time, from 30hp/s to 60 hp/s over 2s.

    • Increased damage tick interval from 0.1s per tick to 0.3s per tick

      • Dev Comment: We’ve always intended for Toxic Gas to act as an area denial tool. However, because of its immediate high damage and quick dispersal, it has been too potent. We’ve made changes to make Toxic Gas better fit the original intention.

  • Gadgets

    • C4

      • Decreased ammo count from 2 to 1

      • Decreased cooldown from 45s to 30s

      • Decreased minimum damage at the edge of the explosion from 93 to 75

    • Defibrillator

      • Added functionality that causes revived players to gradually re-materialize into the level over a period of 3s before fully loading back into the arena

      • Increased charge-up time from 0.6s to 0.8s

      • Increased starting health from a defibrillator revive from 40% to 50%

    • Dome Shield

      • Decreased maximum duration from 20s to 12s

    • Jump Pad

      • Increased cooldown from 25s to 30s

    • Motion Sensor

      • Moved from the Light archetype to the Heavy

    • RPG

      • Fixed an issue that made dispersion almost identical regardless of what state the player was in

      • Increased projectile dispersion in all non-aiming states

      • Reduced projectile dispersion when aiming down sights

      • Increased zoom-in time from 0.2s to 0.4s

      • Increased equip time from 0.45s to 0.5s

      • Increased unequip time from 0.35s to 0.4s

    • Sonar Grenade

      • Moved from the Medium archetype to the Light

    • Tracking dart

      • Moved from the Medium archetype to the Light

      • Decreased dispersion in most movement states by 50%

      • Increased accuracy by decreasing dart dispersion while aiming down sights from 30% to 10%

      • Added force feedback for controllers

    • Vanishing Bomb

      • Increased grace period on teammates from 0.75s to 1.25s

      • Increased total cloaked duration on teammates from 6s to 7.5s

      • Increased total cloaked duration on the user from 5s to 6s

  • Specializations

    • Recon Senses

      • Removed for assessment

        • Dev Note: we’ve concluded that Recon Senses have been detrimental to the game at large, and have decided to put it out of play for now. The specialization may return in some new form down the line, but only after a major rework.

    • Mesh Shield

      • Increased cooldown on a fully depleted shield from 12s to 15s

      • Increased starting health after full depletion from 200 to 250

  • Weapons

    • AKM

      • Decreased damage falloff minimum range from 35m to 30m

      • Decreased damage falloff max range from 40m to 37.5m

      • Decreased damage falloff modifier at max range from 67% to 55%

    • FCAR

      • Decreased damage falloff modifier at max range from 67% to 55%

    • Lewis Gun

      • Updated weapon recoil pattern to be slightly less accurate over time during sustained firing

    • M11

      • Increased accuracy by decreasing bullet dispersion when firing from the hip

    • M60

      • Updated weapon recoil pattern to be slightly more accurate over time during sustained firing

      • Increased accuracy by decreasing bullet dispersion while moving when firing from the hip

      • Increased accuracy by decreasing bullet dispersion while moving when firing while aiming down sights

      • Decreased accuracy slightly by increasing bullet dispersion while standing still when firing while aiming down sights

    • R .357

      • Increased damage falloff modifier at max range from 33% to 45%

    • Throwing Knives

      • Increased projectile speed from 120m/s to 138m/s

    • XP-54

      • Decreased accuracy by increasing bullet dispersion when firing from the hip in most movement states

EQUIPMENT MASTERY

Added new levels with rewards to the following equipment items:

  • WEAPONS

    • M11

    • SR-84

    • V9S

    • XP-54

    • DAGGER

    • LH1

    • SH1900

    • SWORD

    • 93R

    • AKM

    • R.357

    • CL-40

    • FCAR

    • MODEL 1887

    • RIOT SHIELD

    • FAMAS

    • FLAMETHROWER

    • LEWIS GUN

    • M60

    • SLEDGEHAMMER

    • RPG-7

  • SPECIALIZATIONS

    • GOO GUN

    • HEALING BEAM

    • GUARDIAN TURRET

GAMEPLAY

  • Added an option for auto-sprint in the gameplay section in settings

    • Dev comment: You can turn on auto-sprint in the settings menu and select the time it takes for your contestant to begin sprinting. THE FINALS has a unique “omnidirectional sprinting system,” which means characters can sprint in all directions instead of the more common forward-only sprint. As such, we’d love to get your feedback on auto-sprint, and what additional settings would help you better customize your sprinting experience!

  • The preview arc for grenades now shows where they will detonate in their trajectory

  • Improved an issue where controller players would unintentionally drop carried objects when trying to interact. Now carried objects won’t be dropped when pressing the “Interact and Equip Weapon” button if the weapon is already equipped.

  • Improved camera placement and framing for charms
  • Fixed so that your squad is centered in the tournament lineup intros and outros

Given this is the start of a season and a major patch, don’t be surprised to see follow up updates be released for balancing, tech fixes and whatnot.

Sledgehammer Games has released the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone update for March 13, and this is a server-side fix that introduces various improvements and adjustments to Mutiplayer, Warzone and Zombies. In addition to that, we’ve also added some of the known issues the dev team has acknowledged recently.

Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone Update for March 13 Patch Notes:

One of many factors in spawn selection is to avoid a spawn trap. When a player dies soon after respawning, that spawn point is temporarily deprioritized. If there are not enough safe spawn points available, a spawn flip is more likely to occur.

By adding additional spawn points, the system has more safe options available, decreasing the chance of a spawn flip.

Alongside the fixes outlined above, there are a bunch of issues that the dev team is currently investigating (via the official MW3 Trello board).

Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone Known Issues (as of March 13, 2024):

Zombies Issues:

  • Player Containment Levels are being knocked back a tier when exfiltrating from a Dark Aether Rift or a Story Mission

Tekken 8 Interview – Katsuhiro Harada Talks Pluggers, In-Game Shop and More

While Tekken 8 launched with a load of features and was another great entry in the franchise, we were still curious what the future holds, and how the Tekken dev team at Bandai Namco planned to address “pluggers” and a few other issues.

Thankfully, we got the chance to talk to the man himself, Katsuhiro Harada! Officially known as the Tekken’s Project Chief Director, Harada is the person to ask about anything Tekken, and ask we did! In our Tekken 8 interview, we ask about the chances of getting free DLC characters, why the studio added the item shop post-launch and a lot more!

Note: The interview was conducted before the February Tekken Talk aired, as such, some of the questions and answers were discussed there. Huge thanks to the Tekken Reddit community for the Q’s!

MP1st: Are there plans to penalize “pluggers?” By this, I mean rage quitting or those who pull the plug to escape a loss in their online record. If there’s a plan to combat this, when is the expected release for it?

Harada: Generally, if a disconnection occurs, the disconnection rate increases. The mechanism of displaying the opponent’s disconnection rate before a match, which allows the user to decline the match, is similar to TEKKEN 7. However, as of March 1st, we found a bug that causes the disconnection rate to not function accurately, and these issues are planned to be improved on in April.

As mentioned in the TEKKEN TALK program in February, severe pluggers will start to be banned from March 2024 onwards. It also has be noted that the issue of a user physically unplugging the LAN cable itself cannot be prevented, and this is not limited to TEKKEN. Additionally, while the unplugged party can be identified, the current situation does not provide 100% proof of identification for the method known as “uplink unplugging” — which is again, not specific to TEKKEN. Therefore, while there might be desire to penalize the unplugging party, if the unplugging party was using a malicious method such as uplink unplugging, it could inadvertently penalize the victim who was disconnected in error. Hence, caution is necessary in this regard.

With that said, strict measures ranging from temporary bans to permanent bans will be applied to reduce the presence of pluggers for players whose disconnection rates reach a certain threshold. We kindly ask for your patience until the ban enforcement begins, albeit not as straightforward. In the gaming industry, legal preparations, including having solid legal grounds in case a banned player files a lawsuit, are needed. This is also a measure demanded by platforms, so it is important to understand that bans are not as risk-free and easy as imagined.

Nevertheless, we plan to execute a significant number of bans soon.

MP1st: Is there a chance for Team Battle to make a comeback?

Harada: That depends if there’s demand for it. We’ve been conducting user surveys at considerable cost since the offline era of fighting games. Since the move to online, we’ve been analysing all kinds of data statistically.

While I’m sure that many have played the Team Battle mode with friends and family and have good memories associated with it, we found that it wasn’t played by players as much as the community might think.

The Team Battle mode in TEKKEN 2 was played the most, but as the series progressed, it became less and less chosen. If the mode were to make a comeback, people might play it nostalgically for the first few times. However, when looked at from the perspective of the entire player base, many players will call for different content to be added instead of a mode that is not demanded for. Moreover, in the modern age, adding such modes is not as cheap and easy as it previously was, and involves significant debugging costs and more.

All in all, the demand for the Team Battle mode has been low, and demand for it hardly accumulates. Some may say on social media sites that they want it, and while there may be anecdotal evidence to support the demand, what is crucial is the quantitative data. As such, we’d need to direct our efforts where there’s a more significant demand, as our time, resources, and development budget are not infinite.

MP1st: Are there any plans to add endless/ghost battle mode?

Harada: The Super Ghost Battle in TEKKEN 8 has received a tremendous response and positive reviews, so there is a possibility for expansion in the future depending on further player responses.

MP1st: Why didn’t we get a Mokujin-type character or is that part for future character rollouts?

Harada: During the development stage, we had to consider the usage rate and popularity of each character and as such, have excluded Mokujin from the current rollout. User needs are constantly changing with the times, and we’d have to adapt and do the same in order to stay relevant.

MP1st: Are there plans to expand the Fight Lounge?

Harada: Yes, do stay tuned for updates.

MP1st: Why was Akuma omitted from the line up? Is it due to a licensing issue?

Harada: Akuma was never part of the starting roster as he’s not originally a character from TEKKEN, nor is he a default character.

MP1st: Any plans on allowing different characters to be displayed on the home screen instead of just Kazuya?

Harada: In February’s TEKKEN Talk, we had shown the upcoming DLC character, Eddy Gordo, displayed on the homescreen instead of Kazuya. For more details, please refer to the video.

MP1st: Why was the in-game shop added post-launch?

Harada: It’s necessary to have a store in order to provide various additional contents after the game’s release. However, in the lead-up to the game’s launch, we were focused on packing as much content into the game as possible; and as you may know, TEKKEN 8 has been widely recognised for featuring more content than other competing titles at the time of release.

As a result, we chose to address and include the store as well as other additional elements after the game’s release.

MP1st: Will characters added as DLCs have their own character episodes?

Harada: As mentioned in February’s TEKKEN TALK, we’re looking into updating the game’s story around the characters that will be added into the game. We thought it’d be pointless to restrict the story episodes of new characters to only the users who have bought them, so we’re planning to add such episodes as a free addition to whomever that owns the game.

Please refer to the video for further details.

MP1st: Is the development team looking into netcode refinement?

Harada: The development team is constantly making improvements, not only to the netcode but also to other aspects of the game. Please stay tuned for more updates.

MP1st: Any chance of getting an accessibility option to increase the text size in the U.I. of the game on consoles?

Harada: This is possible, but will depend if there is a demand for it.

MP1st: Is there a chance we’ll get free fighters as DLC?

Harada: Characters are the most costly content to develop, but in terms of potential, we might consider further down the road. Please stay tuned for updates.

MP1st: Are there any plans to add voice chat in the future in online matches?

Harada: If there is a high demand for such a feature, it might be implemented in the future. However, the development team would have to keep in mind that such an implementation comes with both merits and demerits.

Tekken 8 is available now on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. You can read our review of the game here.

We’d like to thank Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia for taking time out of their schedule to coordinate the interview

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Roadmap for 2024:

March 20, 2024:

Helldivers 2 Flying Bugs Are Freaking Players Out; Arrowhead Claims Their Existence as “Lies” From Bug Sympathizer

It seems the last Helldivers 2 update brought more than just mechs, as reports throughout the galaxy have begun spreading quickly, claiming that there are now flying bugs in the game. Yet despite the evidence, Arrowhead Game Studios denies their existence, marking those spreading this lie as traitors to democracy.

Things have been pretty hectic in Helldivers 2 since Mechs became available last week. The war to spread democracy has been filled with many sacrifices, especially for the ongoing battle for Malvelon Creek. Yet this past week, we saw additional support arrive in the form of mechs, giving the Helldivers some much-needed firepower against the Automatons.

While players begin to gain ground on one front, it’s the other, the one against The Terminids, that many are starting to worry about as players have begun encountering bugs that can fly. Don’t believe us? Well here’s your hard evidence.

Oh weird, there are three mushrooms. Oh hello there, Cock Rock. OH SWEET LIBERTY! WHAT ARE THOSE!??
byu/Projectpatdc inHelldivers

Despite this, it seems the governing powers of Super Earth have denied these claims, saying that everyone knows bugs can’t fly and that this is slander against Super Earth in an attempt to brainwash residents.

Being serious for a second, gotta love how Arrowhead is handling all these reports. As a fellow Helldiver, it’s awesome to see content like this just spring up out of nowhere, as it truly adds to the game’s narrative, and also helps push that this is a living and breathing universe.

What other surprises Arrowhead may have in store for us will be something we’ll have to all find out ourselves and with a new content update arriving this Thursday, March 14, we’re expecting plenty of surprises to be included.

The Finals Season 2 Hands On Preview – Power Shift Mode Is Absolute Mayhem

Embark Studios is “glitching” things up in Season 2 of The Finals, and we were given an early look at the upcoming content, including a new 5v5 mode that brings a twist to escort missions. Read on for our  The Finals Season 2 hands-on preview before it starts tomorrow, March 14.

A Payload Wrecking Machine

The new mode, which Embark calls “Power Shift,” is, at its core, an escort mission where players must capture, defend, and escort a moving platform. Reaching the destination will win the match, though some added twists make the mode stand out.

For starters, rather than four teams battling it out on the field, Power Shift instead only has two teams consisting of five players each. Power Shift isn’t round-based either, where one team takes a turn at defending while the other attacks, but instead, you’ll be doing both, depending on whether you have the capture point or not. Thus, the name “Power Shift” is used as teams constantly battle for control of the platform, shifting between attacking and defending.

As with any escort mission, the point you’re trying to capture and transport moves around the map in a set path outlined on the field. This is a circular floating platform that players can stand on, allowing them to set defensive points. But if you know anything about The Finals and the dynamic gameplay provided, not just from the player builds but also the levels themselves, then you can probably guess that this platform isn’t just for escorting.

As you defend the moving point, it slowly makes its way through buildings and demolishes everything in its path. This creates chaos, as those on the platform now not only have to deal with enemies but also potentially a building falling on them.

On the attacker side, the destruction caused by the moving platform also creates unique opportunities, as you can now use those new paths to your advantage. The platform doesn’t just stick to one elevation, as it will slope up and down around the pre-designated path. That gives you access to some verticality around the map that would have needed the players to create themselves. You can even use the platform as cover as an attacker by hiding underneath it, only to pop up for a surprise attack during the entire demolishment.

There’s even some physics tied to the platform, as covering it with goo will slow it down and cause it to be unbalanced to stand on.

We recorded plenty of gameplay (admittedly, we suck at playing, but we had loads of fun!), showcasing all of this during our play session.

As I said, we aren’t the best players when it comes to The Finals, but we can fully understand the sheer amount of fun a mod like this provides. Granted, you need a good team for this mode, and it may be wise to play in parties rather than solo and with randoms. Not that it’s impossible to play solo and with randoms, but you’ll have a better time with friends on the mic in this mode.

But compared to the other modes available in The Finals, Bank It, and Quick Cash, Power Shift is quite a shake-up and fun spin on traditional escort missions. Of course, this being a closed session and all, things could be different once it gets into the hands of the public, but I have a feeling this mode will quickly become one of the go-to, especially for those looking for a more competitive side of the game.

Power Shift will be available in The Finals on March 14 as part of the Season 2 update.

Sony Is Happy With Their 10 Year Deal From Xbox to Keep Call of Duty on PlayStation

Despite the remarks made during the Activision Blizzard buyout court case, PlayStation seems to be quite happy about the deal they managed to negotiate with Microsoft to keep Call of Duty on their platform for the next 10 years.

Speaking in an interview with CNBC early today, PlayStation’s CEO Jim Ryan (who’s retiring this month) opened up a bit more on the Activision Blizzard acquisition, noting one of the reasons why this was so different compared to past buyouts was due to the size of the publisher. That, and Call of Duty, which is one of the biggest online games available today.

Despite the case not having the outcome they likely wanted, based on Ryan’s comments during the interview, the publisher is quite happy that they could still walk away with a deal.

The reason that we felt this one was different from anything that had happened in the past was the sheer size and importance of the Call of Duty franchise. So, we were absolutely thrilled to be able to negotiate a deal with Microsoft to ensure that franchises remain available on PlayStation platforms for the next 10 years.

That was very important to us, and we’re very happy to have done that deal.”

While the specifics of the deal aren’t fully publicly known, we do know that it promises to bring Call of Duty to PlayStation for the next 10 years. This deal is likely similar to the one that Microsoft made with Nintendo, which promised the game would be available on Nintendo platforms and have content and feature parity. That means PlayStation platform likely won’t have any exclusivity once their former deal is up.

Modern Warfare 3 is the last Call of Duty that is expected to offer exclusive skins and features on PlayStation, with the deal set to expire this coming November.

Sea of Stars Co-Op Update is Adding Support for 3-Player Local Mode; Over 5 Million Players Have Sailed Across the Stars

One of the best RPGs released in the last year is about to get a whole lot better as Sabotage Studio has announced that Sea of Stars will be getting a co-op update that adds support for three players locally.

In a surprise announcement, the studio announced that Sea of Stars will soon receive a new mode dubbed “Single Player+” that adds three-player cooperative local play.

“Dubbed “Single Player+,” this mode allows three players to journey together in Sea of Stars. Staying true to the game’s core turn-based roots, each player will engage in traversal and combat with a new “Co-op timed hits” mechanic as they embark with friends on Sea of Stars’ grand adventure. The new mode is currently in development, and more details will be released soon.”

Despite the mode’s name, Sabotage Studio hasn’t confirmed whether this update will include a new game plus feature, which players have requested since the game’s release. That would certainly make replaying with co-op more worthwhile for some, though at the moment, it does seem to be only a co-op update. The team mentions that we should expect more details on the mode to arrive “soon.”

A short teaser of the new mode in action was also released.

This news also comes with the announcement that over five million players have played Sea of Stars since its release. It’s an impressive number, though unsurprising considering all the high scores (scoring a 9/10 in our review) it got and being part of both PS Plus Extra and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

Hopefully, this isn’t the only piece of content players will have to look forward to this year, as the development team is hard at work on the game’s first DLC, “Throes of The Watchmaker.” No release has been given for the DLC, but Sabotage did confirm that it moved away from early production in January 2024.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.002.002 Thwips Out to Address Crashes

Insomniac Games has begun rolling out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 update 1.002.002, a small patch addressing some recent crashes players were experiencing. Here’s the full patch notes for today’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 update.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.002.002 Patch Notes

Size: 435 MB

According to Insomniac Games’ Senior Community Manager, this update addresses the following issues.

  • Two crashes have been addressed, that a low percentage of players were experiencing them.
    • Crash-related when selecting French as the main language.
    • Crash-related to the map.

Not surprising that this is a small update, considering the game did just get its massive New Game Plus update. We don’t expect much else to be addressed in this update beyond the listed notes above, though the community manager did confirm that the team is investigating other known issues, so we expect more patches to arrive soon.

PS4 Update 11.50 Released for Improved Messaging and More This March 13

Aside from the PlayStation 5 getting a big system update today, Sony has also released PS4 update 11.50, and this improves messaging on the console. Don’t expect any major features to be added given we’re in the hardware’s lifecyle end.

PS4 Update 11.50 Patch Notes for March 13:

  • We’ve improved system software performance and stability.
  • We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.

Yep, that’s about it. As we’ve said, the console is nearing its end, so any future updates are mostly for stability and security purposes. If we do get another one in the future, we’ll be sure to let our readers know about it.

If anyone spots any other changes not mentioned in the patch notes above, leave a comment below and let us know.

Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection Review – Let the Past Die

We’ve seen our fair share of ports, remasters, and remakes over the years. Some efforts have absolutely blown us out of the water: Last year’s Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space remakes, for example, were shining examples of how to take beloved titles and modernize them for a new generation while still remaining faithful to what made the originals so great. Others, like the horrific XIII remake, seem more like quick cash grabs aimed to prey on nostalgia. They provide no value to the franchise and add nothing to the conversation, fated to fade into the background and act as proof to the companies behind them that “nobody really wants more of this, or they would have bought it.” It’s a tragic way for beloved IPs to fizzle out.

When DICE rebooted the Star Wars Battlefront series, their games were generally received well, but many fans longed for the traditional gameplay structure of Pandemic Studios’ early 2000s titles. The DICE games were solid, sure, but they lacked the magic and specific touch of the originals, veering more towards the gameplay and spectacle of the Battlefield games instead of leaning into what made the first two Battlefront games great. When Aspyr announced the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection last month, fans were hopeful that they’d finally be able to experience the classics in a modern fashion, reliving their greatest childhood memories of toppling AT-ATs on Hoth or sneaking into an enemy command ship to destroy it from the inside. I was one of those fans, eager to see some of my favorite titles of all time with a new coat of paint and hopeful that the collection would revitalize them with some quality-of-life features that were missing in the original releases. It pains me, then, to say that on the scale of XIII to Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection lies much closer to the lower end than it could have.

Just Like the Simulations

Getting the gameplay out of the way, I’m both pleased and disappointed to report that Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 play and feel identical to the 2004 and 2005 releases. In my efforts to prepare for this review, I went back and played both titles on PC for a brief period of time. All of the same highs and lows of these two titles exist in their purest forms in this collection. Characters control exactly like they used to, and battles play out much the same way as they had when I was a young boy. On the plus side, this means that coming back to the games felt like riding a bike. I remembered every objective from the campaigns, knew which classes and weapons were most effective in which situations, and exploited all of the same weaknesses in the AI as I have for the last 20 years. On the other hand, this also meant that I faced the same frustrating issues.

Star Wars Battlefront 1’s campaign is a standout example of this phenomenon. While the sequel’s story mode is a compelling look behind the curtain of the Clone Army’s 501st Legion, the first game’s single-player missions are effectively just a playlist of battles designed to match the order of events from the films loosely. The only objective in these missions is to wipe out the enemy team, accomplished either by capturing every command point on the map or depleting the enemy team’s reinforcements. Keeping this mission structure in the Classic Collection makes sense, but what really frustrated me was the complete lack of tuning the mode had received. Just like in 2004, some of these missions felt entirely unwinnable. Thanks to poor AI and bad pathing, there are a few levels in the game where your teammates will just bottleneck themselves into a firing range, becoming easy pickings for enemy vehicles and mounted guns. In these levels, the only thing you can do is race to wipe out their AI before they wipe out yours, a task much easier said than done.

What makes matters worse is the complete inconsistency of Battlefront 1’s AI accuracy. On foot, many units struggle to hit the broad side of the barn. It’s fairly easy to walk into a room with five enemies and walk out mostly unscathed. With a few rolls and a very generous auto-aim, you can wipe them out in seconds. That changes the second the enemy steps into a vehicle or a stationary turret. Suddenly, you’ll be hard-pressed to show your face anywhere near these bots and survive. It’s a relic of the times, and it’s faithful to the original experience, but my unbound nostalgia quickly gave way to frustration as I restarted some of these missions three, four, or even five times before learning how to cheese the map layout to pull off a victory. It would have been nice to see the difficulty spikes here properly tuned to provide a more consistent experience across the board.

The same is true of Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign. While it’s leagues above the first game in structure, storytelling, and cohesion, there were still moments I found myself getting irritated at its outdated design. For example, during one of the earlier space battle missions, the player is tasked with landing an LAAT Gunship inside the enemy hangar. When I played the original on PC last week, I found I had to fly in and out of the enemy hangar and land two or three times before the game finally realized I’d completed the objective. That same exact issue was present in the Classic Collection version of the game.

I felt a similar frustration later on down the line when trying to complete the mission on Polis Massa. Generally speaking, the campaign’s spawn points are fairly forgiving. Polis Massa is the exception. Near the end of the mission, you’re tasked with pushing from one end of the map to the other to destroy a Rebel databank. For whatever reason, the spawn point for this objective is a nearly minute-long walk from the objective itself. This would be fine, except for the fact that this map is built entirely on tight hallways and sharp corners, meaning that if at any point you run into a group of enemies—and you will—they might melt you with sheer numbers before you have a chance to react, sending you back to the start. It’s a minor nitpick, and you could argue that the solution is simply to “get good,” but it feels mostly inconsistent with the rest of the game’s balance, and it’s another example of an issue that went entirely untouched in the Classic Collection.

Weapons From a More Civilized Age

In terms of content, the Classic Collection does bring a few minor but welcome additions. Perhaps the biggest change is the ability to play Battlefront 2’s Hero Assault mode on nearly every ground map. In the original release, this game mode was restricted to Mos Eisley. While it was entertaining to throw Star Wars’ most beloved characters from both eras against each other in a chaotic fashion, being tied to a single play space was frustrating. The original Xbox version of the game did get a patch that allowed the heroes to go to battle in a handful of other arenas, but the Classic Collection marks the first time players can pit characters like Darth Maul and Luke Skywalker against each other on planets like Dagobah, Endor, and Hoth. The added roster of maps adds tons of variety to this already great all-star romp, and it’s a welcome change.

star wars battlefront classic collection review

Kit Fisto and Asajj Ventress also make their first appearances on all platforms this time around. These two heroes were previously locked to Xbox as DLC characters that were unattainable on other platforms. Now, they’re included in the lineup with their original abilities and animations fully present, and they feel great. While it’s a relatively minor touch, it’s fun to see these two back in action, and more choices to pick from are always welcome.

Their movesets also make for a nice switch-up from the very standard Lightsaber Throw, Force Push/Pull, Force Choke, and Force Lightning abilities that most of the characters have. Kit Fisto can toss out a Force Orb that acts as a sort of AoE explosive, dealing damage in a small area and staggering enemies. Asajj Ventress, on the other hand, possesses Star Blades, small shuriken-like projectiles that can bounce off walls and block off doors and hallways if used correctly. It’s cool to see these unique powers at play, though admittedly, it’s a bit of a bummer to have them locked to these two characters alone.

All of the previously exclusive Xbox DLC maps are present in the Classic Collection as well. Star Wars Battlefront 2 now features Yavin 4: Arena, Bespin: Cloud City, and two Rhen Var maps from the first game, and Jabba’s Palace is available in Star Wars Battlefront 1. These maps never made their way to PlayStation and were only available on PC through mods, so they’ll be fresh to those who played the originals on those platforms. Cloud City, in particular, is a standout, featuring long, elevated walkways around the outside of the map and a large central courtyard that allows for a variety in your play style. These DLC maps do look pretty much identical to the original game’s versions, however, meaning that they feature the same simplistic lighting with minor environmental weather changes. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it does make them feel a little out of place with the rest of Battlefront 2’s maps.

The Dark Side of Things

While having the complete package of previously platform-locked content is nice, there are a few modern features omitted from this collection that, frankly, I find baffling. First and foremost is the absence of cross-play support. Perhaps Aspyr decided it would have taken too long to work out universal servers. Perhaps they just didn’t want to put any more effort into this project than they had to. We know they already have their hands full with the KOTOR remake. Whatever the reason, not allowing players from different platforms to play with each other is almost certainly a nail in the coffin for this collection. While the servers will likely be populated for the first few months following release, I’d be surprised if PC players didn’t just return to the original versions for the sake of complete mod support, and once the nostalgia wears off on console players, I can’t see them sticking around when live-service games are constantly tossing out new content to bring players back in. It’s depressing to think about.

If Aspyr wasn’t even willing to add cross-play to their titles, then we’d be a little optimistic to hope for any more significant quality-of-life improvements. That being said, I couldn’t help but feel especially frustrated with the package when I consider what it could have been. Star Wars Battlefront 1 is a great title, but it lacks so many of the additions that made the sequel great. For example, Battlefront 1 doesn’t have sprinting, forward rolling, space battles, or even playable heroes. On the other hand, Battlefront 2 lacks a few of its predecessor’s unique touches, such as the ability to go prone or pilot air vehicles on land maps. I’m not blind to the fact that creating a best-of-both-worlds collection that includes all of these features in both games would be a much more strenuous undertaking than a simple port job as Aspyr has done here. Even so, it’s a bit disappointing to wait 20 years to play these games again, only to have them virtually unchanged and brought to modern systems in such a basic way.

To be honest, “basic” might even be overselling it. I ran into several bizarre issues during my time in these two titles, including map textures that were missing, geometry that was entirely invisible and blocked my movement several times, and even a jarring color issue on Hoth where half of the snow turned pink. Star Wars Battlefront 1’s maps also suffer severely from draw distance and far-object rendering issues, which is especially jarring when Battlefront 2 loads its maps so much better. It’s just strange to think that they couldn’t find a way for the Battlefront 1 maps to live up to that same standard. These issues are all fairly minute in the grand scheme of things, and I choose to believe that Aspyr will work to patch some of them out in the coming weeks, but it did give me pause and cause me to wonder just how quickly they turned these games around for modern systems.

A Bright Center to the Universe

Even though this package is half-cooked, there’s still a natural charm to Pandemic’s Battlefront titles that is impossible to deny. Battlefront 2’s campaign, the strategic Galactic Conquest mode, Hero Assault, and the staggering body count of XL are just a few of the many great things to experience in these titles. While the texture quality and resolution have been significantly improved, the actual graphic quality of the games has been left mostly untouched, a decision that I actually think serves to their benefit. It was better to see these games how they look in my head. Upgrading the graphics by any truly impactful measure would massacre the early 2000s charisma of their look and feel. Ultimately, that’s who this package is for: people who are looking to get back in touch with who they were 20 years ago.

I didn’t get a chance to experience the online multiplayer in my time with the Classic Collection, but I fully intend to spend a good chunk of hours on the servers once the game becomes available to everyone. Playing battles split-screen with my brother back in the day was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in gaming. I’m hoping that being able to hop into massive battles alongside my friends as an adult will recapture some of that same magic. Holding down command points, getting into dogfights, and clashing lightsabers with a community of like-minded Battlefront fans is sure to be a blast, even if the experience as a whole is short-lived.

Verdict

Would I recommend picking these titles up if you’re a recently converted Star Wars fan and you’ve never played them before? No, I don’t think I would. The inherent value of the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection lies primarily in its nostalgia factor. For those of us who grew up playing Ewok Hunt on Endor and abusing Anakin’s Force Choke in Mos Eisley, this package will feel like home. But it’ll feel the same way home feels when you move out for the first time and come back to find that your parents are not idols but normal people, and flawed people at that. The Battlefront Classic Collection presents Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 in their most faithful forms and refuses to elaborate on them, down to every quirk, fault, and irritating repetitive bug.

Making these games accessible on modern systems is great, sure. Making them accessible by modern standards would have been better. The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection is a delightful and painful romp through old stomping grounds that will likely lose its short-lived luster in a matter of weeks. The good old days are not as good as they seem. It’s time to let the past die. Kill it if we have to.

Score: 6/10

Pros:

  • A nice avenue to play some classics on modern systems
  • Texture quality and resolution improvements remain faithful to the original vision
  • A sizable chunk of content to play with a good sense of variety
  • Smooth, consistent framerates across the board

Cons:

  • A severe lack of significant or meaningful upgrades or quality-of-life features
  • Missing textures, invisible objects, and unpredictable mission difficulties galore
  • No cross-play
  • There is no option to disable adaptive triggers on PS5
