Classified France ‘44 Review – Tactical Assault Friends

Turn-based tactical games, such as XCOM, used to be a niche genre for hardcore PC gamers. That was until XCOM Enemy Unknown was released in 2012 and made their style of turn-based grid-style tactical games a legitimate mainstream success. Since then the genre has exploded in the U.S. and has been increasingly watered down as more and more games have been made for the general audience. (Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle probably being the biggest success.) Around the same time this was happening, World War II based games had reached their saturation point and started to fall back in popularity after Call of Duty began to get away from the setting.

Now we’re getting the first significant attempt at mixing the two in Classified France ‘44. While there has been an extensive number of strategy games set during the second World War there has not been many in this style. The question remains then of whether you should spend the money and time. Well, let me tell you, it depends on how you feel about the genre. But then I’m getting ahead of myself.

Opus One

Many depictions of the D-Day invasion have been presented in video games. Both Call of Duty and the now dormant Medal of Honor franchise have used that decisive battle as the opening level in their campaigns before. In Classified France ‘44, however, it is just the inverse. From the start of the game, there is a timer counting down the number of days until the invasion. You play as a small multinational group of Spec Ops soldiers and spies set out to soften and manipulate the Nazi situation in France ahead of D-Day. Every time you complete a mission, the timer ticks forward a couple of days. It’s a unique and frankly deeply appreciated device that both keeps the tension up and also helps you track how many more missions you can fit in.

The basic gameplay loop is when you start at a map with several missions you can take in various regions of France. Every time you succeed, you can help give some of that region back to one of three local groups that are helping you oppose the Nazis. Then you can slide over to the team manager section of the menu, and based on XP earned, you can unlock abilities on each character’s skill tree. You can also customize their appearance and weapons depending on what nation they’re from and what you’ve unlocked. I didn’t find any of the characters themselves as all that memorable nor particularly unique from each other except in their special abilities. Each of the (eventually) eight characters is assigned a class that gives them additional tools in missions and means they use different weapon types. Trench guns, Tommy guns, Long Rifles, and so on.

In between missions, you can also select characters to send off for specific things on their own, like advanced training to get a large block of XP for them or simply to heal from debuffs they’ve taken on from the previous mission.

I didn’t find the story to be particularly interesting or original. But between the three factions you’re trying to convince to support the allied invasion and the various customization and mild team management I found that the game had more depth than I initially thought and was pleasantly surprised. But now let’s get into the actual combat and missions.

Jumping at the Woodside

There are three types of missions that pop up on the map: Stealth, Ambush, and Assault. In Stealth, you’re attempting to get in and complete objectives without being seen. Ambush starts off stealthy for a few turns and then becomes an outright battle, while Assault starts off already in the thick of it with no stealth, period. Of the three, I found I appreciated the Assault the most. Trying to be sneaky in a turn-based scenario never stopped feeling awkward, and I found myself having to save spam to prevent an enemy from taking a turn I didn’t expect and discovering one of my characters. Granted, as the mission progresses save spamming is less necessary as you start to learn all of their patrol patterns.

Like most tactics games, everything is on a grid system with various cover objects to hide behind. Also, like most tactics games, some of these covers offer half protection while others offer full protection. Initially, I found the maps hard to read. The squares are smaller than most tactics games I’ve played, and the color palette being muted didn’t help, but the game makes extensive use of HUD indicators and colored icons on the map to show what type of cover or stealth each square provides. The character clothing customization also helped to identify which unit was which.

Like most games in the genre, each attack has a percentage chance of connecting and dealing damage. Something that Classified France ‘44 (a name that never gets less clunky to say) has different is a unit morale system. Even if you miss or an enemy unit misses one of yours, there is a second meter that is drained. This meter controls how much you can move and how many action points you can use. If it drops all the way to zero, that unit isn’t able to take any action at all. They have to wait for it to be raised. There is a character class that raises your unit’s morale, but after a couple of turns, it will start to recover on its own.

I found that this solved one of the greatest frustrations people have with tactics games, and that is how annoying it can be when you keep losing the dice rolls against the same enemy. Some games have solved this with cover degradation, which this game does not have, but I found that this system made it feel like I was always making progress even if I wasn’t doing any damage. The unit I’m firing at may not be dying, but I’ve reduced its morale enough that it can’t move or fire back.

The depth of strategy varies, but I found that repetition was key. As the game went on, most missions led me to realize about halfway through that I had made a miscalculation about which four characters to bring in or where to have them move in the first few turns. I ended up restarting a lot, but I didn’t mind it as the maps are all small, and the missions, if you have a clear idea of what you need to do, are not overly long.

Foggy Day

Classified isn’t a perfect game. You can tell that it is made with a smaller budget. Given this, there is a little bit of clunkiness and jank with the controls, and on a couple of occasions when I attempted to load a quicksave (thankfully easy to both create and load from the pause menu), the game just hard crashed me back to the system home screen. It wasn’t something I ever found rage-inducing, but it was definitely annoying. I never had any serious issues like file corruption or having to restart a whole mission due to the frequent auto-saves. But it is definitely a game in the single or double A space. Whether or not that’s a big deal for you is a matter of taste, but it only somewhat affected my enjoyment.

Verdict

Classified France ‘44 is a midrange yet ambitious attempt at a once-popular genre (one that’s not easy to recommend to players. Unless you’re looking at a little variety in your gaming diet, or you really love tactics games, then you might want to think twice before enlisting.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Fun, if not graphically robust, missions.
  • Interesting mechanics.
  • Satisfying tactical gameplay
  • Good Use of the setting in mechanics.

Cons:

  • Uninteresting story and characters.
  • Glitches and clunky controls.
  • Bland graphics customization options.

Tekken 8 Free Character DLC “Might” Be Considered Says Harada

While it’s normal these days for companies to charge players for new characters in fighting games, is there a chance this could change in Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Tekken 8? Could players possibly get a Tekken 8 free character DLC down the road? It seems the door for that isn’t closed just yet.

Speaking to MP1st, we asked Tekken Project Chief Director Katsuhiro Harada about this, and while the Tekken boss didn’t say we’ll be getting any free DLC characters in the future, he did mention how they might consider it.

MP1st: Is there a chance we’ll get free fighters as DLC?

Harada: Characters are the most costly content to develop, but in terms of potential, we might consider further down the road. Please stay tuned for updates.

It’s not definite or anything, but at least it’s not a no, right? Some fighting games even offer a chance to try paid DLC characters for a limited time as well, which Bandai Namco might try at some point or another. In the same chat, Harada confirmed to us that a disconnect rate display fix is planned to be rolled out in April.

Stay tuned to our full interview hitting the site this week.

If you haven’t picked up Tekken 8 yet, you might want to check out our review where our own Paulmichael highly recommends it and states, “All Tekken fans should buy Tekken 8 without hesitation, and most fighting game fans will find something to like as well. Though the year may have just started, Tekken 8 will probably compete for fighting game of the year and barring any surprises, should be the runaway winner.”

The Outlast Trials Roadmap Revealed, Season 1 Begins This Summer

It looks like the experiments will continue in The Outlast Trials, as Red Barrels studio has revealed the roadmap along with planned release windows, including for the game’s first season.

As revealed on X (formerly Twitter), the current roadmap for The Outlast Trials is below.

The Outlast Trials Roadmap

  • Toxic Shock will be our first Limited-Time event for all 1.0 players to experience followed by another Classified Event, stay tuned for more info and teasers.
  • Season 1 will be a major update that will feature a New Trial, a New Prime Asset, a New Rig, and more!
  • The “Future” category consists of features that will be added later in the year.

As noted in the roadmap, players can expect Season 1 to begin sometime this Summer. But before then, you’ll be able to get your hands on some new in-game events, which are expected to go live soon. Toxic Shock will kick things off with another event following. Both will provide new challenges and earnable rewards.

Beyond that, we have Season 1, which looks loaded with content. We’ll hear more about that as we inch closer to Summer. With that being dubbed Season 1, we can probably safely assume that the future content will also be tied to season releases, though there do seem to be some surprises, such as new planned modes, enemies, and more.

Not a bad first look at what’s to come to The Outlast Trials.

The Outlast Trials is now available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. For those interested in reading our thoughts on why this might be one of the best online horror games this year, be sure to read our full The Outlast Trials review!

Dave the Diver Anniversary Edition Release Crosses Over With Guilty Gear Strive

Dave the Diver has been on a roll with crossovers lately, with Dredge now available and a Godzilla crossover soon. But that won’t be the last, as the exclusive Nintendo Switch physical version of Dave the Diver Anniversary edition will also get a special crossover with Arc System Works’ 2D fighter, Guilty Gear Strive.

Announced via a press release, Dave the Diver Anniversary Edition is now available for preorder (MSRP $39.99) and will be released on May 30.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auI-cUzODI8

As detailed in the trailer, this edition of the game will come with some exclusive content: “The Disaster Of Passion” rhythm game, a digital artbook, and, surprise, surprise, a Guilty Gear -Strive- themed boat skins.

Alright, so it’s not the most exciting of crossovers, especially compared to Dredge and Godzilla, but it’s still pretty cool to see Guilty Gear somehow make its way into this game! That, and a nice little bonus for those who are physical owners, rather than digital.

Dave the Diver Anniversary Edition will launch on May 30, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Former Call of Duty Devs’ Deviation Games Closes Doors Without Releasing a Game

Deviation Games, the studio founded by former Call of Duty vets three years ago, has announced its closure without any project to hold to its name.

Announced back in 2021, the studio was founded by former Treyarch Game Director Dave Anthony and Co-Studio Head of Treyarch Jason Blundell. Deviation was revealed to be working on a new IP and was developing it in collaboration with Sony.

Unfortunately, that seems to be over with now, as Kriste Stull, Deviation Games’ Chief Human Resources and Operations Officer posted the following message on her LinkedIn:

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Deviation Games. I want to express my deepest gratitude to our entire team. Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and contributions to Deviation; I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have worked with each and every one of you.

To the entire video game industry, we will be hosting a networking event, and we would love for any/all companies/studios hiring to participate. Please reach out to me directly if you are interested in attending.

To all the Deviators out there, we will always cherish the memories we made together. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Go get ’em!”

Chalk up another studio casualty for 2024. It’s been a tough year for the video game industry, with layoffs happening left and right alongside studio closures.

Hopefully, the devs working at the studio before lands on their

Fortnite Update 4.17 Issued as Updated Version of v29.00 This March 8

Epic Games has rolled out Fortnite 4.17 (PS5 update version 1.000.128), and this is the second patch released within 24 hours, and is an updated patch version of v29.00! This should help in the login issues the game has been experiencing the entire day.

Fortnite Update 4.17 Patch Notes:

While Epic Games has already released the v29.00 changelog for Chapter 5 Season 2: Myths & Mortals, the update pushed out now is an updated version of the v29.00 patch, which should work as intended.

While you can check the complete patch notes for v29.00 right here, here’s a quick rundown of the major things that went out:

LEGENDARY LOCATIONS

MOUNT OLYMPUS

You can’t have Olympus without Mount Olympus. Home of Zeus, you’ll always feel like you’re being watched with the grand monument that graces this great mountain.

CHAOS UPON THE LAND

The gods descended with their powers and weapons, but that doesn’t mean your next battle has to end in tragedy. Make your next battle a myth to remember by using them for yourself!

  • THUNDERBOLT OF ZEUS
  • GATEKEEPER SHOTGUN
  • HARBINGER SMG
  • HUNTRESS DMR
  • WARFORGED ASSAULT RIFLE

ANOTHER POWER… THE POWER OF FLIGHT!

The Thunderbolt of Zeus isn’t the only Olympian Power. With the Wings of Icarus, soar through the skies and divebomb your foes below! But beware: fly too long and your wings will burn up, and taking too much damage may lead to a crash landing. Find this Mythic power across the Island!

Yet another Olympian Power is coming your way — the Chains of Hades will pull you in later this Season…

UNDERGROUND IN THE UNDERWORLD: WEAPONS FROM LAST SEASON

Unlike Orpheus looking back at Eurydice, you’re allowed to turn to the weapons from Chapter 5 Season 1. Here’s a list of the weapons returning from last Season:

  • Hammer Pump Shotgun
  • Frenzy Auto Shotgun
  • Nemesis AR
  • Thunder Burst SMG
  • Reaper Sniper Rifle
  • Ranger Pistol

MYTHS & MODS

It’s not enough that weapons descended from Olympus — the Thermal Scope and Speedgrip weapon mods did too. Also forged by Hephaestus, the Thermal Scope mod can be attached to any scoped weapon. Want vision like that of the gods? It more than doubles the scope view and has a thermal effect you can toggle on or off! With the Speedgrip mod, your movement speed while aiming will increase. Aim true and don’t tarry!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to read more about the Competitive changes, new Battle Pass and whatnot, head on over here.

COD: Warzone Mobile Controller Support Detailed: Touchscreen, Console Controllers, and Backbone Compatibility

COD: Warzone Mobile is launching in just a few weeks! Leading up to launch, the team behind the game have taken to the official Call of Duty blog to share details on the game’s controller support and different control layouts that players will be able to use as they drop back into Verdansk.

COD: Warzone Mobile will support a whole array of controllers and features extensive touchscreen customization. We’ve got a whole new heap of information, so here’s everything we learned from the COD blog:

COD: Warzone Mobile Controller Support Details

Controls Overview: Three Ways to Play

In preparation for the worldwide launch of Call of Duty®: Warzone™ Mobile on March 21, it’s time to get acquainted with the game’s easy-to-use, in-depth, and completely customizable control schemes. Prepare to maneuver your Operator in a way that suits your exact playstyle. This article showcases three main methods you can use:

  • Touchscreen Controls: The touchscreen controls allow you to tap and swipe across glass. No additional peripherals are needed, and the game can be played immediately, with an incredibly deep array of customization options for fine-tuning available during your initial few matches and beyond.
  • Backbone One Controller: Transform your phone into a gaming console with Backbone One controller (sold separately) for iPhone and Android devices. Backbone One offers exceptional responsiveness and optimized preconfigured control layout.
  • Bluetooth Controller: If you play Call of Duty on console or PC using a controller (sold separately) and wish to match the feel of your current setup, then Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has you covered, allowing for a wide variety of Bluetooth game controllers — like the Xbox Wireless Controller — to work seamlessly.

Let’s dive into each of these options a little further.

Touchscreen Controls

Playing “on glass” is simple to set up and learn, with a small learning curve, and you can gradually adjust your controls via the in-game overlay that appears on the in-game HUD (heads-up display). However, before you start to fully immerse yourself with the touchscreen customizations, it’s important to spend a match simply moving and (auto) firing.

When the match begins, your left thumb will govern your movement via the Virtual Control Stick in the bottom-left part of the screen, while your right thumb enables you to look and turn, as well as automatically fire at any foe that enters your crosshairs. By default, there is no hip-fire button; if you’ve positioned your crosshairs on an enemy, you’ll shoot at them.

The controls menu will allow you to dive deep into the game’s touchscreen control customization, including the following:

  • Main Screen: This shows the Control Set you are currently using (“Default Auto”).
  • Control Sets: Accesses the premade Control Sets (also known as “HUD presets”) you can choose from (which place all your control buttons in different locations across the screen, depending on your play style).
  • Customize HUD: Accesses one of two screens (one for Battle Royale and one for Multiplayer) that show your current Control Set, along with every available button. This may look intimidating, but it’s not.
  • Weapon Trigger: This allows you to Auto Fire all your weapons, customize the firing of each weapon type (e.g., allowing for different actions for Shotguns compared to LMGs), or choose Manual Fire to shoot using onscreen buttons.
  • Automations: The game has most of your combat maneuvers auto-enabled to assist you while you learn how to play using touchscreen controls, like the auto hip-fire mentioned previously. This allows you to keep these features on, customize them in the Gameplay menu, or turn them off.

There are eight HUD presets to choose from at the start, and from there you can customize nearly every aspect of your display, including size, position, and visibility of most buttons on-screen. You can also enter the game’s Gameplay settings menu to adjust in-game responses such as auto-equipping weapons and automatically turning towards sources of damage.

Touchscreen Controls also feature full gyroscope capabilities, allowing for precise aiming and shooting. If you need even more help hitting enemies, you can also enable friendly and enemy outlines for increased visibility.

Backbone One Controller

Backbone One controllers allow players to snap their phone right into a comfortable mount with a typical controller scheme on either side for easy handheld play. All Backbone One controllers are compatible with COD: Warzone Mobile, and being a Backbone+ subscriber can even reward you with unique loadout items to use in Call of Duty.

Backbone controllers function similarly to regular console controllers, so let’s discuss those.

Bluetooth Controllers

The third method of assuming full control over your Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile Operator is to utilize a separate, supported controller, which usually connects over Bluetooth. Note that you can switch between touchscreen and/or controller at any time, and some menu access can only be controlled via touchscreen.

At launch, you can play Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile with the Backbone One controller, as well as any controller that supports Bluetooth connection technology. This includes, but isn’t limited to:

  • Xbox Wireless Controller for Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, and iOS.
  • Xbox Elite Wireless Controller for Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, and iOS.
  • Sony PlayStation® 5 DualSense Wireless Controller
  • Sony PlayStation® 4 DualShock 4 Controller

Pairing your supported controller with your phone is primarily done via Bluetooth (although some phones may support a direct wired connection). Here’s a quick example of how to set up an Xbox Wireless Controller for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile:

  1. Enable pairing on your controller. This is the small, slightly raised button just to the left of the USB port on the controller and marked with a “)))” icon.
  2. Enable Bluetooth on your mobile device, usually completed through settings.
  3. Within your device’s Bluetooth settings, locate “Xbox Wireless Controller” and connect to that device.
  4. Open Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. From the Main Menu screen, ensure your Xbox button is on (by pressing it), and press a button or move a thumbstick on your controller.
  5. A “Controller Connected” message appears on the screen. Now modify your in-game controls for Battle Royale and Multiplayer Modes, and you’re ready to go!

Note that most of the menu functionality in Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, like choosing a Playlist or changing out a Loadout, is still controlled by touchscreen and your device’s native controls, and not your controller. This is normal: Launch your match, and once your Battle Royale or Multiplayer game begins, the game seamlessly switches over to full controller functionality for gameplay.

Also note that at worldwide launch, players using native touch controls, or any type of controller, will be matchmade together in the same pool of recruits. As the game evolves, we will evaluate balancing player matchmaking pools by native touch and controllers, as well as, potentially implementing different rules for control playstyles in competitive play.

Looks like fans of Call of Duty will have plenty of options for playing COD: Warzone Mobile and enjoying it to the fullest extent. COD: Warzone Mobile launches on March 21 for iOS and Android devices.

Tekken 8 Characters Popularity Revealed by Ranked Leaderboard Statistics

With Tekken 8 having been out a little over a month, players are starting to settle into their favorite characters, specifically for ranked play. Over on Reddit, an enthusiastic user used the game’s ranked leaderboard to gather some statistics on the various Tekken 8 characters and their popularity in ranked play.

This data comes from user olbaze, someone with a history of posting ranked leaderboard statistics for Tekken 7. You can view his full post in the r/Tekken subreddit below:

Tekken 8 Ranked Leaderboard Statistics: The First Month
byu/olbaze inTekken

Olba’s broken down a pretty big handful of stats, but there were a few that we found most interesting. First and foremost, his breakdown of the most popular characters since release is as follows:

Most Popular Tekken 8 Characters

  1. Dragunov
  2. Reina
  3. Victor
  4. King
  5. Azucena
  6. Jin
  7. Devil Jin
  8. Hwoarang
  9. Feng
  10. Yoshimitsu

These are just the top ten, but Olba’s got the full 32-character breakdown on his Reddit post. Bryan, Jun, and Lili are all just outside the top ten. On the other side of the spectrum, Zafina, Leroy, and Panda are camped comfortably at the bottom of the list.

The breakdown of Top 5 Most Popular Characters in each of the top 13 ranks showed us that Dragunov, Reina, Victor, King, and Jin were all very common in ranks Tenryu and above. Certain other characters like Azucena and Devil Jin also made a few appearances in the high-up ranks.

Olba also gave us a cumulative average of each rank division to show us which ranks are currently the most populated. Middle-of-the-pack seems to be the most common, with ranks Garyu, Shinryu, and Tenryu having the larget chunks on his chart. A bar chart of his with percentages reveals that 11.99% of players on the ranked leaderboard are in rank Garyu, making it the most common rank in higher level play.

Keep in mind, some stats in Tekken 8 are currently showing inaccurately. Director Katsuhiro Harada confirmed to us that the disconnection rate statistic is not functioning accurately at the moment, with improvements planned for an April update. It’s possible that other stats aren’t displaying properly, but as of right now we imagine we can trust the in-game leaderboard.

It’s been interesting to see how the community’s responded to new characters and which ones have really ballooned in popularity. This breakdown is unsurprising overall, but the data is always cool to see. We hope Olba continues to make these statistics posts over the course of Tekken 8’s life.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.037 Slides Out This March 8

HexWorks has rolled out Lords of the Fallen update 1.037, and this is after yesterday’s big patch that resolved the visual degradation issues and more. Don’t expect much from this given this is a follow up patch which usually means another fix was added.

Lords of the Fallen Update 1.037 Patch Notes for March 8:

Oddly enough, HexWorks has not acknowledged the patch or released anything about it. Usually, the studio is on top of the changes made and communicate it ASAP.

While we don’t have the patch notes for this title update, we do know some of the issues still plaguing the game thanks to the community.

Umbral ending still bugged on PS5 – Still bugged the umbral ending when you use the lamp on gerlinde to reach the mother (ps5). I finished that ending 2 weeks ago and did again to get the trophy from the iron wayfarer, 2 patches still no fixed. I love this game and im on the side that think that it’s a gem that only need some love and maintenance but damn… I want to keep playing with my character. I don’t even need to get the ending, i just need to be able to restart the ng. (via SDovah)

Potential Fixes:

Yeah it’s still bugged. One way you can prevent the crash is to look at the ground when you’re on the second platform. Just immediately point the camera down. If it still crashes, get on the platform, use the lamp to move it, and then immediately turn around and jump off towards the main platform. Then use the lamp again to pull the little platform back, get on it, and move it normally forward while still looking at the ground. That did it for me when just looking at the ground wouldn’t prevent the crash last time. (via doomraiderZ)

What worked for me was unequipping everything. Armor, rings, spells, weapons. This worked for me first try. (via ResolveLeather)

Character Creator bug – There’s a bug in the character creator that prevents you from tweaking facial features using the fine tune feature for female characters, though it works as expected for male characters.(via supercakefish)

Character creator bug – the fine tune feature only works for male characters (A) and not female characters (B)
byu/supercakefish inLordsoftheFallen

So far, that’s what we found. If HexWorks releases an official patch notes for this title update, we’ll adjust the article.

Helldivers 2 Dev Responds Negatively to Railgun Nerf Complaints , CEO Apologizes for Behavior

Following the significant Railgun nerf from the other day, a Helldivers 2 dev has taken to Reddit to respond to players unhappy with the change. After a few seemingly insensitive comments and what appears to be a general lack of internet etiquette from the dev, Arrowhead’s CEO Johan Pilestedt took to the subreddit himself to apologize on behalf of the dev’s responses and assure action was being taken.

Following the posting of the latest patch notes on the r/Helldivers subreddit, players were quick to voice their frustration with the Railgun’s nerf. Some of them even had some pretty harsh things to say about the dev team (as is common with Reddit), and all of this prompted Senior Animator Fredrik Eriksson to respond to some comments on his own:

Comment
byu/cryptic-fox from discussion
inHelldivers

Responding to frustrated players by calling what they’re upset about a “skill issue” or a “brainless playstyle” obviously won’t go over very well. These are just two of a handful of replies that Eriksson left on player comments, and most of them have a significant number of downvotes and a slew of angry replies.

Following Eriksson’s comments, one user created a post titled “I’m all for balance changes but why are devs antagonising the player base?” This post quickly got thousands of upvotes, and it prompted Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt to respond to the issue himself:

“Hey!

Thank you for bringing this up, this is not the intention from the studio perspective. But since I am a heavy subscriber of a communicative studio it means that I encourage developers to engage with the community. However this also exposes us to risks of miscommunication or heated arguments and it’s something that we actively discuss internally at the studio to improve on. While I understand that it reflects on the studio as a whole, it is not our intention that this should be the behavior from us. We want to ensure that you all have the best time possible in this game and in this community.

As for the balance patch and the opinions surrounding it, we actively read as much as we possibly can and take what is said into consideration when we discuss things internally. Right now, the hot topic is your guys’ feedback and response to the balance adjustments and the feeling of the game experience at large.”

Pilestedt also made it clear that he was “extremely disappointed” by Eriksson’s behavior and that the studio is taking efforts to teach the team how to properly interact with the community in the future. Pilestedt’s built himself a positive reputation very quickly for how actively and kindly he responds to the community online, so this was a reassuring message to see from him.

At the end of the day, devs are just humans too. While it was unprofessional to talk down to players when they were voicing legitimate concerns, it also sucks to see people say rude and hurtful things about your work and actively criticize it when they might not have any idea what goes into making it. It’s a double-edged sword.

If you’re also upset about the recent Railgun nerf, don’t worry! We wrote a guide to some useful Railgun alternatives for your next deployment into the frontlines. Not only that, but the EXO-45 Mech is also live in the game too.

Tekken 8 Disconnect Rate Display Fix Planned for April Says Harada; Talks Combating Pluggers

For those who may have speculated that the disconnect rate may be displaying inaccurate information on some players, you may not be wrong. Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken Project Chief Director confirmed they’ve found a bug in the information displayed, with a fix planned to roll out this April.

This was confirmed to MP1st in an exclusive interview (done before the February Tekken Talk) with Harada. He also talked about some of the challenges combating those whom players deem as “pluggers,” players who purposely disconnect by unplugging their ethernet cable to avoid a loss in their record.

“Generally, if a disconnection occurs, the disconnection rate increases. The mechanism of displaying the opponent’s disconnection rate before a match, which allows the user to decline the match, is similar to TEKKEN 7. However, as of March 1st, we found a bug that causes the disconnection rate to not function accurately, and these issues are planned to be improved on in April.”

Harada goes on,

“As mentioned in the TEKKEN TALK program in February, severe pluggers will start to be banned from March 2024 onwards. It also has be noted that the issue of a user physically unplugging the LAN cable itself cannot be prevented, and this is not limited to TEKKEN. Additionally, while the unplugged party can be identified, the current situation does not provide 100% proof of identification for the method known as “uplink unplugging” — which is again, not specific to TEKKEN. Therefore, while there might be desire to penalize the unplugging party, if the unplugging party was using a malicious method such as uplink unplugging, it could inadvertently penalize the victim who was disconnected in error. Hence, caution is necessary in this regard.

With that said, strict measures ranging from temporary bans to permanent bans will be applied to reduce the presence of pluggers for players whose disconnection rates reach a certain threshold. We kindly ask for your patience until the ban enforcement begins, albeit not as straightforward. In the gaming industry, legal preparations, including having solid legal grounds in case a banned player files a lawsuit, are needed. This is also a measure demanded by platforms, so it is important to understand that bans are not as risk-free and easy as imagined. Nevertheless, we plan to execute a significant number of bans soon.”

As Harada mentions, unplugging isn’t exclusive to Tekken 8. Several other fighter games, as well as practically any other online game, experiences the same issue. Just because someone disconnects, it doesn’t always mean they’re unplugging, as several other factors could play into the disconnect, such as temporary loss of internet service. Hopefully whatever system Tekken 8 has implemented, it’s able to calculate rates accordingly and determine certain high users and their disconnect patterns.

Beyond that, though, we can expect the disconnection rate display to be fixed this April; that way, you can immediately tell if someone will disconnect based on their history. That, along with the penalties implemented in Ranked and the bans that will go out this month, should hopefully limit these types of players.

New Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris Rewards and Map This Week March 8

Destiny‘s Trials of Osiris weekly PvP mode has returned this Friday with a new map and rewards. If you’re wondering about the current rotation, we’ve got you covered: MP1st’s new Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris rewards and map this week March 8, 2024 post lists down all that information in full below.

New Destiny 2 Trials of Osiris Rewards This Week March 8, 2024:

Trials of Osiris Map:

The Burnout

Rewards

  • Reputation Rank 4: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 7: Enhancement Prism (3)
  • Reputation Rank 10: Trials Weapon (Changes for each rank reset)
  • Reputation Rank 13: Upgrade Module (2)
  • Reputation Rank 16: Trials Weapon (Changes for each rank reset)
  • Flawless Reward: Incisor (Adept)

Reputation System, Trials Engrams, and Adept Farming

Win individual rounds within each match to gain Trials reputation. The amount of reputation you gain increases with each round you’ve won on your card. Earn enough reputation, and you’ll be able to claim a Trials Engram from Saint-14! This engram can be focused into any currently available trials loot you have previously obtained, or it can be taken to Master Rahool for a random Trials drop. Your reputation increases after every match completion, based on the number of round-wins on your card, regardless of the result of that match itself (win or lose, 0-5 or 5-4).

Once you have gone Flawless, keep playing! Every win you achieve while at the 7-win level, even if you lose your Flawless, has a chance to drop bonus Trials Engrams, adept weapons, prisms, and even Ascendant Shards. There is no penalty for losing once you’ve made it to the Lighthouse!

When you’re done, you can cash in your 7-win passage for one additional adept drop, granted you have gone Flawless that week. This resets your card so you can start anew.

Passages

Name Perk Cost
Passage of Ferocity Your third match win grants a bonus win. 1500 Glimmer
Passage of Mercy Forgives one loss per run. Forgives a second loss if you have not yet been flawless this week. 1500 Glimmer
Passage of Wealth Increased reputation from match wins on a ticket. 2500 Glimmer
Passage of Confidence Grants bonus rewards from Flawless Chest.

Helldivers 2 Down With Non-Stop Loading Issues as EXO-45 Mech Goes Live This March 8

Those experiencing issues of the loading icon just going around and around in Helldivers 2, it’s not just you. It seems the game’s servers are down this March 8, with multiple retry login attempts failing. While that’s bad news for those who want to play, there is some good news, as the EXO-45 Patriot Mech is now live in the game!

Helldivers 2 Down With Non-Stop Loading Issues This March 8:

Update 2: The latest update from Arrowhead from the game’s Discord channel states that this issue should be resolved now.

Update: Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has acknowledged the outage and states it’s due to too many people trying to get the mech!

“Hey everyone!

With the successful push from the community to take Tien Kwan and the subsequent enabling of the mechs our servers have a hard time coping, the team is aware and doing what they can to mitigate. This intermittent issue is caused by too many trying to acquire the mech at the same time. Service will be restored eventually, but for now I ask for patience.

I am so impressed by the combined power and dedication of the
@helldivers2
community. You all are massive heroes liberating Tien Kwan 4x faster than we thought”

We’ll update the article once we know more.

Based on our testing, the game’s servers are having issues, as we cannot login presently, Multiple people on Twitter have also said the same. To date, Arrowhead Game Studios has not issued anything about it just yet.

Once we know more about the server situation, we’ll update the article.

Helldivers 2 EXO-45 Mech Now Available In-Game:

Just yesterday, Arrowhead released a patch which the studio didn’t reveal any patch notes for. However, within the same day, the studio also announced that Tien Kwan needed to be liberated in order for the factories to be functional again. Well, in just a day, the players have done just that, as the official Helldivers Twitter/X account announced that the mission has been completed and the EXO-45 suit is now available!

So, just how do people get the mech suit in Helldivers 2? Well, you don’t get it via a stratagem, but just by calling it in in-game! Once you get in a match, you should see it along with your other stratagems. Call it in, go hop in! It’s as simple as that.

Once the server situation improves, or if Arrowhead issues a statement, we’ll update the article.

Unknown 9: Awakening Preview – Expanding a Multimedia Universe

Does the name Unknown 9: Awakening ring any bells? If not, you’d be forgiven for forgetting, because the game was originally announced four years ago with an intriguing trailer, and developer Reflector Entertainment has been tight-lipped about the project ever since. It’s part of a multimedia franchise called Unknown 9, which has already seen a novel, comic, and podcast series release all within the same shared universe. MP1st was invited to get a sneak peek at the upcoming video game with a hands-off preview, and we can finally inform you of what’s to come.

One Story From a Larger World

As mentioned, Unknown 9 is a media-spanning franchise, with the game being a part of a shared universe. As development began several years ago, Reflector is using the Unreal Engine 4. While this may not be the latest and greatest, the game still looked and appeared to play just fine. The game was definitely still in an early state, as occasionally enemies would not make a sound even as they were getting beaten up or noticing things out of place. There was apparently an audio-related bug discovered shortly before our demo, but that’s why this was an early look after all.

Unknown 9: Awakening plays in a manner somewhat similar to Assassin’s Creed, in that stealth is generally your best option for surviving, however main character Haroona (played by Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer in the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher) has some interesting options at her disposal which are otherworldly. She is a Quaestor, who has a special connection with a parallel dimension to our regular reality called The Fold. With that, she can use telekinetic and telepathic abilities to gain the upper hand. While there is the typical pushing and pulling of things using this ability, she can also “Step” into other people for a short time, which allows her to control their actions while time stays still. What this means in terms of gameplay is that you can hide in the shadows, and set your enemies up to be their own demise.

Stepping Into Control

We saw several working examples of this. Our demo player stepped into one enemy, and made them shoot an explosive barrel that was conveniently nearby. Once set into motion, naturally the enemy who shot the barrel was confused as to why they did this, but this action also alerted other enemies to the area. The player was spotted due to sneaking out of the bushes at an incorrect time, and at this point they were out of charges for the stepping ability, which gets built up over time by performing various actions, but especially by taking out enemies. So, a couple of melee takedowns later, Haroona was ready to step into another enemy. She did so and made one enemy use their large two-handed blade to slice right through two other enemies, while she took care of a couple of stragglers.

Naturally, while this stepping mechanic is very powerful, it does have limitations to prevent the player from using it as a crutch. On the other hand, later sections of the game can see Haroona able to use stepping multiple times in a row, which means eventually you’ll be able to clear entire rooms of enemies without ever using Haroona’s melee moveset. Unknown 9: Awakening includes save slots, thus encouraging experimentation as you are able to run through a scenario, utilizing stepping in different ways or at different times to get completely different results.

Familiar, Yet Separate

Any of Unknown 9: Awakening’s similarity to Assassin’s Creed makes sense, as Reflector’s Chief Creative Officer, Alexandre Amancio, used to be the Creative and Artistic Director at Ubisoft Montreal, as head of Assassin’s Creed. The story even includes two rival factions, both in the search of the truth. There does not seem to be any sort of time-travelling in Unknown 9, however, and the secret societies are interested in finding individuals, not ancient relics. Perhaps most distinctly, Unknown 9 is not an open-world game. The story is linear, for a more tightly-controlled narrative.

Unknown 9: Awakening has an interesting premise, set in a large, multimedia universe which can already be experienced in some form. While this early glimpse at the game was a very quick look at some of the gameplay mechanics on offer, it did show quite a lot of promise. Single player, linear games certainly still hold appeal for many gamers, and the mixture of stealth, action, and puzzle solving should help to keep things fresh. While it has certainly been a long time since Unknown 9: Awakening’s announcement, thankfully there won’t be too much longer of a wait as Reflector Entertainment is ramping up for release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and Steam this summer.
