Final Fantasy Franchise Sales Reach 180 Million Units Worldwide

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise sales have hit a record high of 180 million, according to a recent announcement from a collaboration with a Japanese theatre group. The franchise had just introduced its latest entry, Final Fantasy 16, to the series last June 22.

Here’s the full statement translated into English via DeepL:

The legendary “FINAL FANTASY” role-playing game series has shipped and downloaded more than 180 million copies worldwide since the first title was released in 1987. With its beautiful graphics, unique worldview, and rich storyline, the series has captivated people not only in Japan but around the world, and has expanded beyond the boundaries of video games to include TV dramas, movies, Kabuki, and various other media mixes. The latest title in the series, “FINAL FANTASY XVI,” which was released in June 2023 and has been creating a huge sensation around the world, will be performed at the Takarazuka Revue. The collaboration between Takarazuka Revue and FINAL FANTASY will create an innovative musical work.

To put the sales number into perspective, GTA V had recently reached 180 million units sold worldwide last March. While that’s one game compared to an entire franchise of titles, 180 million copies in and of itself is a massive milestone, even for a large game developer and publisher such as Square Enix.

As for the game’s latest entry, Final Fantasy 16, go read our review to see why it’s one of the best games in the franchise.

Halo MCC July 2023 Update Releases This July 12, Adds Halo 4 Theater Mode, Firefight Improvements, and More

A new update for Halo: The Master Chief collection has just been announced. The Halo MCC July 2023 update arrives this July 12 and will introduce many new features, including the addition of Theater mode for Halo 4’s campaign and Spartan Ops, improvements to Firefight, and much more.

Here’s a shortened version of everything coming this July.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection July 2023 Update | Halo MCC July 2023 Update Overview:

FEET FIRST INTO FIREFIGHT

Firefight was a relatively late addition to MCC, arriving for Halo: Reach when it came to the collection in 2019, and for ODST the following year. Since then, we’ve made numerous improvements to the Firefight experience, such as the use of the distributed networking model (which was formerly available only in standard multiplayer) and the introduction of game variants with templatized waves (including Flood!) to ODST.

One thing we’ve wanted to do for a while is provide a more seamless drop-in-drop-out (insert feet first into Hell reference here) experience with Firefight, and we’ve finally achieved that with this update.

Firefight’s simulation is more complex than standard multiplayer due to the inclusion of AI-controlled units, as well as various systems which were not originally intended to be networked. As such, we weren’t historically able to support join-in-progress (JIP) for the mode. That’s no longer the case!

HALO 4 CAMPAIGN & SPARTAN OPS THEATER

From the aft of the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn, to the mysterious shores of Requiem, to the doomed Ivanoff Station and the trenches of the Mantle’s Approach—this update brings the ability to explore all of Halo 4’s campaign and Spartan Ops missions in Theater.

A FEAST OF FEATURES

With this upcoming update, you’ll be able to custom map your controller for the full suite of games and, if you find yourself confused between MCC and Halo Infinite, you are in good hands because there’s a control scheme for that.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Halo 3 is getting a brand new (to Halo 3) gametype, Escalation Slayer. It’s a race to the top to prove that you can be the best, no matter the weapon(s). Read on to learn more about it all!

  • Custom Gamepad Remapping – In MCC, you are now allotted a single custom preset for each game. You can start with any built-in preset from that game as a base and modify it to your heart’s content and save as your custom preset.
  • Halo 3 Escalation Slayer – Unlike its Megalo predecessors, Halo 3’s Escalation Slayer is a full multiplayer engine of its own standing alongside Halo 3’s legacy multiplayer engines (Slayer, Capture the Flag, Infection, etc.). This allowed us to create an experience which is both more polished and much more customizable. The core experience is comparable to that of its existing MCC counterparts with a few additions.
  • Background Video Selection – In our previous MCC update, we released an early version of our background video selection feature. The full feature is online with this update, including mod support (and yes, the bug where your selections could be reset when relaunching the game is fixed). Like with controller mods, background video mods are fully available when EAC is enabled.
  • Moa Madness – The Great Journey to find the golden moa statues comes to Halo 2. With each MCC update, we’ve added these collectibles to each campaign and we’re rounding out the collection with Halo 2. You know the drill: three levels will have a golden moa statue each week, go hunt ‘em down!
  • Boots Off the Ground – The Acrophobia skull has been added to Halo: Combat Evolved. Like the moa statues, we have been adding this skull to each game in the MCC, allowing the player character to fly around campaign levels. Paired with the Blind skull, which disables the HUD and weapon model, you can effectively become a flying camera to take screenshots in the pre-Theater games—Halo: CE and Halo 2.

MOD MAYHEM

All kinds of lost content from Halo: CE and Halo 2 are coming to MCC on PC through modding thanks to our partnership with the Digsite group.

If you missed the recent Digsite Deliveries blog from just a few days ago, be sure to check it out for some really great information on the MCC mod efforts.

You can find the full update post here.

Once the patch is live, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Wanted: Dead Review – Pistol Gaiden

Back during the height of the pandemic, there was a licensed game released that didn’t get nearly as much press as I felt it deserved. It wasn’t the most wildly innovative title, but that was kind of the point. It was however a blast from the past throwback to a different time in game design that was incredibly nostalgic. That game was Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, which I reviewed here on the site. It was such a good modernization of licensed games from 15 to 20 years ago that it was one of my favorite games that year. The development team behind that title, Soleil Ltd., recently released the game we’re discussing here, Wanted: Dead.

A title that, in its own way, is also a throwback to that same era. Only this time, instead of a licensed cartoon tie-in, the focus is on Ninja Gaiden-style character action that is intentionally difficult and maintains a kind of insane tone to the writing. Given that the studio boasts pedigree from the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games of that era I was particularly excited when this was announced. Now it’s time to talk about the final product of what is one of the most mixed bags of a game I have ever played.

Heroes of Our Time

The story in Wanted: Dead is not unlike other stories we’ve heard before. In a grim cyberpunk future, a tech conglomerate named Dauer Synthetics owns nearly all of Hong Kong, including the police force. Recent international conflicts have created a new batch of war criminals that are being held by the Chinese government indefinitely for their acts. Dauer has cut a deal with the government to allow them to use some of these inmates as a suicide squad to be sent in when law and order calls for some excessive police brutality. The resulting group of multinational criminal crime fighters is called the Zombie Unit. The leader of that unit, Hannah Stone, is the player character and protagonist of this story.

The international flavor was not something you would usually expect out of a game like this. While listening to Lt. Stone talk with her distinct Swiss accent adds a great sense of character, I found that the meat and potatoes of the writing are still very much Japanese and that the premise of an international squad of war criminals fighting crime ended up being mostly shallow window dressing, especially for the secondary characters. None of these people feel like they have committed atrocities, but the game leads us to believe that they have all done horrific things in their rap sheets. I like the idea of bad people with good hearts or even just bad people seeking redemption, but that isn’t all that well communicated here.

The tone, on the other hand, is off-the-wall bonkers, and I would say that it is one of the most unhinged games I’ve experienced in a while. The line readings often don’t make sense or are at a weird volume, the minigames are out of left field, the humorous cultural references are either outdated or just extremely odd, and the pacing jumps between Dragon-Force-fast and James-Taylor-slow. The soundtrack is also all over the place in much the same way. Personally, I loved it, and I would love to see more of this weird world, especially Stone herself. But I would not suspect that most other people would like it so much. Especially given the technical glitches and combat that falls somewhere between throwback and outdated.

Strike of the Ninja

The moment-to-moment gameplay of Wanted: Dead is varied, but the majority is Ninja Gaiden-style ultra-violent character action hack and slash mixed with some basic third-person cover shooting. Hannah Stone is a master with a Katana, but you also have a mildly customizable assault rifle and an infinite ammo auto-aiming pistol that mostly works as a combo connector or an aesthetic piece in the glory kill animations. If you haven’t played Ninja Gaiden, I will describe the combat as very fast, with a heavy emphasis on dodging and then attacking when the enemies are vulnerable but without the technicality of something like the Souls games.

It rewards cheap combo spamming, but if you are willing to put in the effort to vary your approach, you’re likely to get more out of it. The game is intentionally difficult in a way that frequently feels cheap, as in I was often rolling my eyes or shaking my head in frustration after a random high-damage enemy popped out of nowhere and killed me in a single hit. The levels are linear paths through the environment. They’re broken up with checkpoints. Often you have to memorize the enemy layout through trial and error in order to survive long enough to get to the next checkpoint.

Usually, there are a few high-damage enemies between checkpoints, and I would describe these as mini-goals in between. I found myself trying to make sure I had enough health when I got to them or trying to avoid using the assault rifle altogether to make sure that I had enough ammo to avoid getting in close. By the last level, I was restarting from the previous checkpoint if I lost too much health or spent too much ammo before getting through all the difficult baddies in a stretch. It almost felt like a series of combat puzzles, just perhaps, not in an elegant or exceptionally thoughtful way. It is a repetitive process, but I found a kind of thrill from finally hitting the next checkpoint after dying a dozen (sometimes 2-3 dozen) times in the same stretch of the level.

The Bosses range from actually fun cinematic fights to the same high-difficulty trial and error on steroids. One boss I particularly enjoyed was a one-on-one with a sniper/ninja wearing an invisibility cloak. Another boss involving fighting off a hoard of regular melee enemies while getting sniped from above almost made me give up on beating the game altogether.

After every mission, there’s usually a cutscene that leads into one of a handful of minigames. Then you are walking around HKPD headquarters, finding collectibles and documentation that details the game’s backstory and lore, as well as interacting with NPCs and, if you’d like, replaying minigames you’ve unlocked. If only it were that simple in practice, of course, because Wanted: Dead has the worst technical glitches I have experienced in years.

Through Fire and Flames

I would not be exaggerating if I said that I was actually shocked at how badly Wanted: Dead runs on consoles. I was playing on an Xbox Series X and I experienced constant interruptions. Frame drops are commonplace and often severe. The game crashed on me several times. I stopped counting, but I experienced a hard crash back to the console menu easily more than six times and my whole console locked frozen mid-frame and I had to manually restart the Xbox at least twice. The PS5 version (which our reviews editor Jimmy was playing for comparison) performs more stable, with dips here and there, but also suffered similar issues elsewhere. There were also a couple of times when the audio would go sideways too.

I’m not a game developer. I don’t pretend to know any of the ins and outs of design. But I can say that this feels like a game that had a tight budget, and they sacrificed optimization for more content or higher  graphical fidelity. I can’t say for sure that that’s what happened, but I can say that something didn’t happen that needed to. I was not totally confident that I would be able to finish it, but I did manage not to have the game break in such a severe way as to prevent completion.

This is all especially frustrating when several story-necessary rhythm minigames require exact timing. I never touched any of them again after I squeaked past them because the stuttering and freezing made those parts of the experience actually unplayable in any sort of genuine way. It was heartbreaking from a certain perspective. I think Wanted: Dead has a lot going for it, and I think it could have been a contender for my personal game of the year. But the technical failures are so stark that I’m actually saddened by it. I’m not going to blame anyone because game development is hard, and things happen: but there weren’t any of these issues before in the studio’s previous games, so hopefully, a patch is released at some point that fixes it. Unfortunately, I imagine it will be too late to recover the audience, given that it’s been five months since the release, and there are still major issues.

Verdict

Soleil is an up-and-coming studio that has been showing real promise in the mid-tier games space. A space that has gotten less and less attention this past decade. I think that they succeeded here more than they didn’t. I found myself continuing to come back and fight against the frame rate issues and the technical flaws. I like these characters, even if they are more shallow than they could be. I like the tone. Referencing Supa Hot Fire in 2023 and then having your war criminal antiheroes do karaoke or see who can eat the most ramen right before they lay waste to a government building or comfort a child who doesn’t seem to care that his parents just died in the next room is a crazy, weird, off-kilter, fun time. I even liked the combat: as cheap as it may be to get insta-killed by a random merc with a rocket launcher or a ninja flying out of nowhere. I liked the weird pace of it. I liked the puzzle of deciding how to get to the next checkpoint.

I just really, really did not like having to fight through a non-stop onslaught of glitchy jittery frame rate issues or other small and large performance issues. I want to give this game at least a 7.5, and if it is ever patched further we might be able to reexamine it, but I can’t overlook something so glaring as countable frames and frequent crashes. I hope that Soleil Ltd. is able to bounce back and stick the landing on the next one because I like everything else I’ve played from them. And I know they’re capable of more.

Score: 6/10

Pros:

  • Fun throwback combat
  • Variety in content
  • Interesting characters and world, at least in theory
  • Outlandish, Craziness throughout

Cons:

  • Severe Frame Rate issues
  • Performance glitches throughout
  • Odd Pacing
  • Vague and confusing writing in parts

New Twisted Metal Trailer Rides Out, Featuring Overall Plot and Characters

A new trailer for the upcoming Peacock TV series “Twisted Metal” has just been released. The Twisted Metal trailer, which comes out a month after the previous one, briefly explores the story behind how its post-apocalyptic world came to be, featuring the series’ overarching plot and major characters.

You can watch the two-minute trailer here:

Twisted Metal, a half-hour live-action TV series based on the classic PlayStation game series, is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith, about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Twisted Metal will feature various notable celebrities as its cast, including Anthony Mackie, who plays the series’ protagonist, John Doe. Mackie is most popularly known as Falcon from various Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films and TV series, as well as other movies such as “The Banker,” “Outside the Wire,” and “The Hurt Locker.”

Twisted Metal premieres this July 27 on Peacock.

Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded New Content, Release Date and More Revealed

Activision has lifted the lid on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone’s Season 4 Reloaded! Out this July 12, the new title update will also bring in a wave of new stuff for both games and of course, gameplay adjustments. Read on for the MW2 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded new content and info.

Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded New Content, Release Date and Overview:

Release Date: July 12

Warzone Overview:

  • Welcome to Battle Royale in Vondel. Resurgence will still be around, but for those Operators prepared for a traditional, high-intensity Battle Royale… Vondel is about to welcome up to 72 players to see which one – or which team – can conquer the city.
  • Enter the New Gulag. Call of Duty veterans can make themselves feel at home in Vondel Castle’s wine cellar and dungeon, but anyone can learn how to master this arena for 1v1 duels.
  • Additional Features. The Occupation Scan is coming back, along with the Signals Intelligence Contract, and the Portable Redeploy Drone, all scheduled to be released within the Reloaded launch window.

Modern Warfare II Overview:

  • It’s Last Down. But Task Force 141 isn’t doomed. Welcome to the grand reveal of RAID: Atomgrad Episode 04, the epic conclusion to TF141’s Special Operations in Modern Warfare II.
  • Might Turn into a Ghost… Because that Ultimate Perk can be great on Vondel Waterfront, the new Multiplayer map where stealth maneuvers are your focus , rather than swimming underneath houseboats as you would in Vondel. Be a true 141 Operator and plan accordingly.
  • Time to Play the Game. Ranked Play Season 04 is in full swing, and you have plenty of time – but not too much time – to complete the Battle Pass and reach the maximum Prestige Rank until Season 05 begins!

Across both titles:

  • Supes vs. Soldiers – The Boys Invade Call of Duty. Homelander, Starlight, and Black Noir have arrived, and they brought a few surprises to the Call of Duty universe.
  • MX Guardian: Need something “up close and personal?” Unlocked via challenge through the Battle Pass, this highly versatile full-auto shotgun is limited only by its effective range… Otherwise it’s ready to deliver some devastating knockout blows.
  • More In Store. Whisker Tango and two Tracer Packs highlight the rest of the in-game Store. Also, get the free Prime Gaming Bundle before it rotates out on July 20.

For more info on it, you can check it out here.

Once the patch is out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

It’s a new week, meaning a new Cities: Skylines 2 gameplay deep dive! This new gameplay deep dive details the Zones and Signature Buildings of your city. Check out the full gameplay video here:

Each zone type has its own requirements to flourish. In a functioning city, all zone types benefit from each other. For instance, factories need a place to ship their products, companies need employees, and employees need homes, shopping malls, and attractions to kill their free time.

EA Sports FC 24 Announcement Trailer and Cover Art Kicks Out, Reveal Stream Scheduled for July 13

It looks like EA is ready to unveil its replacement to the FIFA franchise, as the EA Sports FC 24 announcement trailer was released today, with the full reveal set to be unveiled via a livestream on July 13.

Check out the trailer below, where it states that it is not actual gameplay footage, but rendered in EA’s prioprietary Frostbite engine.

In addition to that, EA has also revealed the game’s cover art, which we assume is what we’ll see on the game’s front cover.

For actual gameplay, EA has dated the full reveal for July 13, and it will be streamed live on the official EA Sports FC YouTube channel.

Truth be told, I’m not expecting a whole lot of changes from the yearly FIFA games we have outside of the brand replacement and whatnot, but I would love to be proven wrong. We’ll have the EA Sports FC 24 gameplay and other details up on the site as soon as we know more.

Black Panther Game Announced by EA, in Development by Cliffhanger Games (Former Shadow of Mordor Devs)

EA has just announced a new Black Panther game and it’s being developed by a new internal studio called “Cliffhanger Games.”

As one might expect, there is no gameplay footage to share at this time, but EA did confirmed that the upcoming title will be an original, single-player action-adventure game exploring the world of Wakanda.

While no other details have surfaced at this time, a report about it surfaced last year where it mentioned that the new studio is comrpised of former Monolith Productions (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) developers, and is being headed by Kevin Stephens. EA has also confirmed (via IGN) that veterans of Halo Infinite, God of War and even Call of Duty are also part of Cliffhanger.

Stephens states, “Wakanda is a rich superhero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

For those looking forward to it, it’ll be a while, as Stephens has confirmed that it is “still early in development with a long road ahead.”

Given how fantastic Shadow of Mordor was, a Black Panther game built by the people behind Shadow of Mordor seems very interesting. Let’s hope they manage to avoid the open-world formulaic pitfalls and manages to deliver something marvelous.

This marks the second Marvel game being developed by EA, as the studio announced last year that internal studio Motive is making a game based on the Iron Man.

How Does Seasonal Characters Work in Diablo 4?

With Season of the Malignant beginning on July 20, we wanted to take a moment to equip you with everything you need to know about Seasons.

To participate in Seasons, a new character must be made on the Seasonal Realm. Once you have completed the Campaign, any Seasonal character will start the game with:

  • The option to skip the Campaign.
  • Your Mount available immediately.
  • All previously discovered Altars of Lilith unlocked, and the corresponding Renown for them.
  • All previously discovered areas of the map revealed, and the corresponding renown for them.

Once the Season has ended, the character you made and its progress will be transferred to the Eternal Realm. All items you collected, including in your Seasonal stash, will be transferred too. You can take this character into Sanctuary whenever you please, but Season-specific features such as Malignant Hearts will no longer be accessible.

Diablo 4 Season 1 “Season of the Malignant” Features:

The Free Battle Pass is automatically available to all Seasonal characters. Get the Premium or Accelerated Battle Pass to earn additional rewards.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CHARACTER/PROGRESSION AFTER THE SEASON ENDS?

The character and progress on that character is transferred to the Eternal Realm. You can play this character whenever you want in the Eternal Realm. You can also progress through the Battle Pass by buying Tier Skips which each cost 200 Platinum.

WHAT ARE SMOLDERING ASHES?

Smoldering Ashes is a currency used in the Battle Pass to earn specific bonuses known as “Season Blessings” for the current Season. Players earn Smoldering Ashes by progressing the Battle Pass. By collecting Smoldering Ashes you can apply bonuses to your Seasonal characters. These bonuses last for the Season and only apply to Seasonal characters.

WHAT ARE TIER SKIPS?

Tier Skips are a currency that are applied immediately to obtain 1 full tier in the Battle Pass.

I PRE-PURCHASED THE DIGITAL DELUXE OR ULTIMATE EDITION WHICH CAME WITH A BATTLE PASS. HOW DO I REDEEM IT FOR SEASON 1?

If you’ve pre-purchased a Battle Pass, the purchase button in the Seasons section will be replaced by an option to activate either your Premium or Accelerated Battle Pass.

Don’t forget, there is a patch set for release this July 18 that is for Season 1. While the season won’t officially start until July 20, Blizzard has confirmed that changes and other improvements will be available once the patch is installed. Once that’s out, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Report: Call of Duty 2023 Being Shown by Activision to NBA Players in Summer League

While we’ve yet to hear anything about Call of Duty 2023 from Activision, it seems the publisher does have something to show to gamers — if you’re an NBA player (or at least in the consideration to be one), at least.

Leaked images have surfaced of an apparent Call of Duty event by Activision just for NBA players attending the Summer League in Las Vegas. How do we know? Well, these NBA players (or hopefuls) seems to not have signed anything, as they’ve shared the event on social media.

Mind, Activision does it every year (show the game to NBA players or other athletes) and I have no idea why. I mean, is it for a social media push? More sales? The game is already the biggest franchise in all of gaming, right? It’s so big, in fact, that Microsoft and Sony are tussling over it in court just to make sure the franchise won’t be exclusive to any one platform.

No leaked screenshots, title or whatnot have surfaced yet, but chances are, we’ll soon see a thing or two (as is the case with each year’s Call of Duty leak). Reports have surfaced that states COD 2023 is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and will be a reboot of Modern Warfare 3.

Let’s hope this means that Activision is close to revealing this year’s Call of Duty soon.

Thanks, CharlieIntel!
