On February 11, users signing in to their Xbox One will be prompted to download the first of two incoming updates. Later, March 4’s update will introduce “many new features and improvements, most significantly to [the Xbox One’s] party and multiplayer systems.”

According to Microsoft, the February 11 update “features many new improvements – including lots of behind-the-scenes updates for developers building apps and games for Xbox One, several new features we believe Xbox fans will love, stability and product updates to improve the customer experience, and continuous improvements to the quality of Kinect voice so commands become more fluid and responsive over time.”

Highlights on Xbox’s official website can be found below for both updates, but a definitive list of improvements are still forthcoming, so stay tuned!

Xbox One February 11 System Update Highlights

  • The ability to see and manage your storage space. With this update, you will find it easy to find how much space your content takes up and better manage your content. You can also control your install lineup and more easily manage your download queue. We’ve separated My Games and My Apps into separate lists, so you can easily create separate queues for both. Now you can pick the order in which you want your content to load and we’ve added a boot progress indicator so you can better track updates while they load.
  • The battery power indicator is back! You can see it right on the home screen, so you can easily track how much battery life is left on your controller.
  • And, you will be able to use your USB keyboard with your Xbox One.

Xbox One March 4 System Update Highlights

  • On March 4, in advance of what is expected to be the biggest game launch of the year, we will be delivering another system update to prepare your Xbox One for “Titanfall.”  This update will contain  many new features and improvements, most significantly to our party and multiplayer systems.  Available on March 11, “Titanfall” is a team-based online multiplayer game that showcases the power of Xbox Live, and we will be shipping a new party and multiplayer system that will help make “Titanfall” the must-have game for this generation.

Is This a Halo 2 Anniversary Hint From Microsoft?

This November 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Halo 2, an original Xbox classic developed by Bungie.

Having launched 10 years, speculation is at an all time this year as die-hard fans anxiously anticipate the possible announcement of a special anniversary edition of Halo 2 for release on the Xbox One. Such was the case in November of 2011 when 343 Industries launched Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary on the Xbox 360.

Earlier last week, this NeoGAF thread posted allegedly leaked information stating that 343 Industries recently contracted Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity, two studios that helped with development on the original Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in 2011.

According the post, Halo 2: Anniversary would launch on the Xbox One on November 11 and would also include beta access to Halo 5 and access to a new live-action Halo series.

More recently, Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer teased a possible Halo 2 remake via this interesting tweet:

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 7.37.28 PM

IGN reached out for a follow up, to which the company replied, “Other than confirming that your Halo journey on Xbox One begins in 2014, we have made no announcements related to specific titles. Any report or listing to the contrary is based solely on speculation and rumor.”

Do you sense it in the air? Is a Halo 2: Anniversary announcement imminent?

Thanks, IGN and VG247.

Grand Theft Auto V Ships 32.5 Million Copies To Date, Highest Selling Title Of 2013

Rockstar Games is on a steam roll with impressive records for the open-world sandbox hit Grand Theft Auto V.

If surpassing 1 billion in sales within its first three days of launch wasn’t enough, GTA V has shipped 32.5 millions copies to date, according to Take Two’s fiscal third quarter 2014 report, making it the best selling video game in 2013. But, you probably already knew that. In scope, the entire NBA 2K franchise has sold 35 million copies.

Adding to the ongoing PC and next-gen port rumors, a listing on Czech retailer Supergamer’s website was recently spotted putting GTA V at a June 13 release date for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Take that with a grain of salt, however, as neither Rockstar nor Take-Two made mention of a PC or next-gen GTA V in their  financial report. No official announcements have been made.

Thanks, Joystiq.

More Borderlands 2 Content In The Works, Highest Selling 2K Game Ever

Despite being on the market since September 2012, it appears that Gearbox is not quite done supporting Borderlands 2, as more content is reportedly in the works.

A recent third quarter report from Take-Two states that Borderlands 2 is the highest selling title for publisher 2K Games to date with over 8.5 million copies shipped. It also reveals that Gearbox still has more content in the works for their shoot-and-loot co-op title.

Although details weren’t mentioned, Gearbox does plan on releasing an update in the near future which will add a new color blind option, making it easier to distinguish between the rarity of the weapons, as shown in the images below:

Xbox One ‘Games with Gold’ Program Details Coming “Soon”

The ‘Games with Gold’ program has been around since July of last year, but up to this point, has only extended itself to Xbox 360 owners. According to Corporate VP Phil Spencer, the first details about the program for Xbox One users should be emerging shortly:

Coincidentally, the ID@Xbox program is scheduled to launch in early 2014. Whether the indie titles will be apart of ‘Games with Gold’ or not remains to be seen.

Insurgency – An Early Access Success Story

Insurgency has come a long way since its days as a mod and in full release, I’m happy to say it’s easily one of my favorite first-person shooter games to date.  But a big part of what makes it great is that it’s not familiar, it’s hard, and above all, it’s a fresh experience that hasn’t been done to death, much like some players and reviewers would have preferred it be.

What makes Insurgency so enjoyable is the developers’ commitment to their product.  David Veselka and I had a chance to talk to the New World Interactive devs just before it was in full release and they impressed me deeply with how strongly they believe in what they’re doing.  While they’re busy reading reviews slamming the game for being too hardcore to be good and listening to casual players who are upset it isn’t a new Call Of Duty, the devs of Insurgency have stood strong, unwilling to bend the intent of their game to yield more sales.

All too often, you see developers succumbing to the will of the masses or copying the competition to steal some thunder.  BF3’s Close Quarters DLC made it obvious that DICE wanted it to be the next COD.  COD: Ghosts made it obvious that with its bigger maps and “momentum based” movement, they wanted out-do Battlefield at its own game.  Starbound is basically Terraria, and let’s not even talk about The War Z, or Infestation: Survivor Stories, as it’s known now.

Insurgency is the kind of game that punishes you for not playing smart and the devs are sticking to it.  Let their development of their game serve as a reminder to everyone making games these days: your objective shouldn’t be to make something that reminds people of the familiar, it should be to make a high quality product that stands out as its own thing, even if it is just another arena FPS game (wink, wink, Rekoil).

Early Access opens developers up to a level of criticism and creative control that is unparalleled in the gaming world and I’m sure it makes it hard for devs to stay true to their goals while still improving their design to satiate people’s concerns.  Insurgency is such a success to me because it it’s exactly what Insurgency should be, hardcore, tactical, and solid all around.  The path to that accomplishment for NWI was littered with protests and outcry to make their game easier or more casual as well as legitimate concerns from die hard players looking for the kind of experience the mod once offered.  It’s nice to know that they managed to stick with it and release a game that I think is changing how a lot of players perceive the hardcore shooter experience.  They successfully filtered out the noise and made a high-quality game that I will be playing, thanks to upcoming DLC and additional game modes, for a very long time.

Anxious to find out if Insurgency is the game for you? Stay tuned for our full review in the coming days.
