GTA 5 Sales Hit Over 190 Million Copies Sold; Read Dead Redemption 2 Sales at 57 Million Copies

Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to be massive sellers for Take-Two, as they’ve announced some updated sales figures, putting GTA 5 sales over 190 million copies sold, with RDR2 at 57 million copies

This news comes via a press release from the publisher, confirming the new sales figures. Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two, had some words to share about this quarter’s earnings and the future.

“Our strong second quarter results, including Net Bookings of $1.4 billion, underscore the strength of our portfolio of iconic, industry-leading intellectual properties. During the period, our teams released new offerings, delivered engaging post-launch content, and advanced further the development of our eagerly-anticipated pipeline,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.

“While we expect continued macroeconomic uncertainty, we believe that we are well positioned for the holiday season and are reiterating our fiscal 2024 Net Bookings guidance of $5.45 to $5.55 billion.”

“Looking ahead, I am optimistic about our Company’s multi-year growth trajectory and our ability to deliver long-term value for our shareholders. Our development pipeline is robust and diverse, and we are getting closer to delivering the groundbreaking titles that our audiences throughout the world have been anticipating. With an unwavering commitment to being the most creative, the most innovative, and the most efficient entertainment company, I have great confidence that our offerings will surpass our players’ expectations and set new standards of creative excellence in our industry.”

To put GTA 5 sales into further perspective, last quarter, it was announced that the title achieved 180 million copies. This means that GTA 5, despite everyone I know already owning it, managed to pull off an additional 10 million copies in the space of 5-6 months. That’s extremely impressive and unheard of for a title initially released a decade ago.

Now the bigger question is, with Grand Theft Auto 6 now officially announced, with a trailer coming next month, will GTA 5 sales finally begin to slow down to make way for the new? Only time will tell.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Drop-In Co-Op and Trading Confirmed; Story Progression Can Be Shared

While Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora featuring multiplayer isn’t new, the fact that it will offer drop-in, drop-out co-op is. Alongside this, story progression can even be shared, which is a nice plus.

In the latest issue of Game Informer (issue #161), it was mentioned by the devs over at Massive Entertainment that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will feature drop-in/drop-out online co-op, and how the game was designed with two players in mind. For those wondering, you’ll be able to play the entire adventure together with an online buddy.

To further add to the co-op aspect of the game, Player 2 will retain both character and even story progression (to some degree). Story progression is dependent on if both players are on the same mission. That means you could beat the entire game, with a friend, from start to finish and keep story progression on both accounts.

On the other hand, if say your friend joins you and your very late in the game, they won’t be able to play that mission since they’ve yet to progress there.

This is fantastic news, as those who have played the Far Cry series will remember that any progress was saved only for the host. That meant that if you joined someone and made progress in the story, then you’d have to do it over again for yourself. You’d have to continue your own progression, despite making it with another player in their game.

Another thing worth noting is trading of gear is confirmed too! Players who have a higher level can gift their online co-op pals powerful weapons and gear that they can then use in their own campaign. This should help gamers starting out get a leg up on enemies and the game — as long as they have a willing buddy to gift them stuff.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora sails out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC this December 7.

Ripout Hands-On Preview – Doomed Space

Ripout is shaping up to be a space bounty hunter’s dream, a concoction that heavily drinks from Doom and Halo to create a fast-paced co-op shooter experience with roguelike elements thrown in for good measure. While the atmosphere is suitably gloomy and filled with monstrosities, the horrors that you face are mostly there to serve for target practice, but the sights are nonetheless gross and interesting, at this stage of Early Access.

In Space, No One Can Hear Your Pet Chew Enemies

Designed to be played fast and furious when you’re not inside your ship upgrading your arsenal and exploring the new suits, Ripout doesn’t hold back, including some timed missions where urgency is even more crucial. The procedurally generated levels make sure that the derelict ships you are exploring never look the same apart from the overall theme that combines metallic structures with grotesque alien mass, but the structure of the missions doesn’t differ that much – retrieve some item and return to the shuttle, slaughtering every type of creep that gets in your way.

A reasonable concern surrounding games with randomized maps is that a certain sense of monotony may settle in. With the repetition of tilesets and environments that are different but don’t give you the complete feel of being in another location, gameplay may become tiresome after a few hours, so hopefully more variety will be added before the full launch.

Ripout Hands-On Preview

One of the highlights of Ripout is the cooperative play up to three players, although you can play solo and still enjoy the frantic gameplay. The scaling difficulty will keep the challenge fresh, and in our experience it was noticeable how the game became more taxing when venturing with a partner. Playing solo allows for additional peaceful moments, at least until the latter part of the missions when all hell breaks loose.

Your main weapon is far from conventional, labelled as the Pet Gun. The twist here is that you can aim the pet at an enemy and it will jump at it, facehugger style, but the downside is that you can’t shoot your main gun until the pet returns a few seconds later. It’s a mechanic that makes you consider your options in the middle of a firefight – shall I send the pet or keep firing the gun – and the addition of pet mods adds some depth to it, as you turn the pet into a temporary turret, or add a scanner for points of interest.

Weapon diversity seems to be slim as of yet, with your standard tropes including the assault rifle, shotgun, and long gun. One trivial detail I don’t quite grasp is why the weapon isn’t locked while in your spaceship hub, allowing you to fire around like a madman, naturally without consequences.

Ripout Hands-On Preview

Gunplay is fairly solid right now, with good sensations for the weapons, apart from the secondary pistol which seems to lean too much on the lighter side. When you unlock other options such as the attack claw, things become more immersive, almost as if taking a little turn into The Darkness territory.

While somewhat repetitive and lacking diversity in monster types, the exploration of the derelict ships can be fun if you are fully aware of your surroundings. At times, Ripout seems to overuse the environmental hazard damage, from electricity to toxicity and steam pipes, not all of them exactly easy to spot amidst combat or while running through some dark corridors. Attacks from the alien dogs – for lack of a better name – also drain your health in the blink of an eye and feel unfair, being just a couple of examples where the game needs better balancing.

Chew and Tear

Ripout Hands-On Preview

Ripout shows some promise and a solid foundation to build upon, shooting for the same space where GTFO is currently one of the leading titles. The Pet Gun idea is interesting and gunplay is already above average, but right now the game is lacking content, enemy diversity, and more varied mission types. With a full release vaguely planned for 2024, this is a shooter that can go places and we’re curious to see just how much bite it truly has when the time comes.

MP1st was given access to a preview build of Ripout for our hands-on session. Ripout is currently in Early Access and launches during 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.

Report: TimeSplitters Studio Free Radical Subject to Shutdown at the Hands of Embracer

Following a botched deal that’s become somewhat notorious in game industry spheres, Embracer’s “restructuring” plans continue to take their toll on unfortunate studios. Employees at TimeSplitters studio Free Radical fear that their studio might be headed for closure following a notice from superiors.

This news comes by way of VGC, who reported on it early this morning. According to their sources, employees of Free Radical were notified by Plaion (the Embracer division overseeing them) that the company was looking for alternate options as per UK employment law, but that there’s an imminent chance that the studio may be shut down entirely.

As VGC noted, 15 employees at Free Radical have already labeled themselves open for hire on LinkedIn and other platforms. Among these employees are a lead game designer, artists, and even an IT manager. It wouldn’t be surprising to see more of the team get ready to jump ship in case of the studio’s closing.

Prior to this news, Free Radical was set to make a new game in the TimeSplitters series. Fans of the beloved FPS were delighted to see a dead studio revived to bring back an amazing franchise. Now, there’s a good chance whatever they’ve been working on will never see the light of day.

Free Radical is the latest in a long line of Embracer casualties. Back in September, Crystal Dynamics suffered numerous layoffs at the hands of the Swedish holding company. Before them, beloved studio Volition was closed by Embracer after 30 years of operation. Even Embracer’s senior management seems to be losing faith, as their COO stepped down just this week to form his own studio.

We’ve said it a million times, and we’ll say it a million more: this sucks. It’s a really frightening time for the game industry. It’s hard to imagine that devs can their jobs well when the constant threat of being let go hangs over them. We can only hope that the trend of job losses slows down soon.

When we find out what Embracer does next, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Call of Duty HQ Receives an Overhaul for Modern Warfare 3

In anticipation of Friday’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release, the Call of Duty HQ app has received a facelift. To help players understand the changes and navigate them better, a new Call of Duty blog post outlines the differences and important features of the new launcher.

Here are the details on the updated Call of Duty HQ directly from the Call of Duty blog:

Downloads and Updates

Call of Duty HQ is the front door for Call of Duty across all console and PC platforms. Within Call of Duty HQ, players have control over the footprint of their Call of Duty experience on their platform of choice, and it’s all contained within one unified location.

By navigating to the ‘manage files’ section within Call of Duty HQ on any respective platform, players will see each area of game content from Modern Warfare III, Warzone, and Modern Warfare II listed as separate sections. Modern Warfare III and Modern Warfare II include the modes unique to those titles. For example, Modern Warfare III separately lists the files for Campaign and Multiplayer (which includes Zombies content).

From this menu, players can reduce overall footprint size by uninstalling specific content no longer being actively played. If you finished a particular mode and do not wish to play it again, you can go into ‘manage files’ within Call of Duty HQ settings on your platform to remove those files.

Call of Duty HQ File Size

In addition to game files for Campaign and Multiplayer (including the Zombies experience) within Modern Warfare III – all of which can be downloaded or removed to adjust your overall storage usage – the overall file size of Call of Duty HQ reflects our commitment for players to bring their inventories and progression with them from Modern Warfare II to Modern Warfare III.

Modern Warfare II fans can Carry Forward player inventory and weapon progression from last year’s title to Modern Warfare III. This inventory requires file downloads during installation, so the weapons, Operators, and other Modern Warfare II content is available within Modern Warfare III. Additionally, select Modern Warfare II maps that Carry Forward to the Modern Warfare III multiplayer rotation will also require storage space.

File sizes may vary based on platform and region – which may include localization files required for a specific region.

Call of Duty HQ Sections

Starting today, Wednesday, November 8, once players download the latest software updates in advance of Modern Warfare III’s worldwide launch, Call of Duty HQ will be the central location to play new and upcoming content for Modern Warfare III, as well as the launch pad for Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare II. Each title will be featured on its own row within Call of Duty HQ, including a What’s Hot row highlighting specific playlists.

  • What’s Hot: The home of top playlists for Modern Warfare III
  • MWIII: Access the Modern Warfare III Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies
  • Warzone: Play Call of Duty: Warzone or the DMZ beta from this row
  • MWII: Access the Modern Warfare II Campaign, Multiplayer, Raids, and more

Call of Duty HQ will also feature an in-game store for Modern Warfare III, and at game launch will include the all-new CODE Warrior Pack and current Modern Warfare II content bundles. New Modern Warfare III content bundles will be available in Season 01.

Warzone playlists will rejoin the What’s Hot row at a later date. Players will be able to seamlessly switch between Modern Warfare III and Warzone content starting in Season 01.

Known Issues

Call of Duty HQ continues to evolve, bringing multiple titles to Call of Duty players from one, single destination. The following issues are known and are being addressed:

  • Physical Disc Identification: Players will encounter changes with how Call of Duty games are listed during the download and installation process. For example, some players who purchase the disc version of Modern Warfare III, but do not already have Modern Warfare II installed will not see the Modern Warfare III icon until COD HQ has fully updated after a Day One patch.
  • Cross-Title Parties: Players who form parties within Modern Warfare III may be disbanded when switching to Call of Duty: Warzone. If this happens, players can party up again to play in Warzone. This will be corrected in an update shortly after launch of Modern Warfare III.

Make sure to update your Call of Duty ahead of the game’s release. Pre-loading is available now on all systems, and from what we hear, it’s a pretty hefty file size.

Modern Warfare 3 will be available this November 10 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The campaign is now out as part of early access if you pre-order the game.

WB Games Plans to Focus on Live Service and Free-to-Play Games, Says CEO

Despite an incredibly successful year following the release of the single-player, content-complete Hogwarts Legacy, WB Games is looking to bolster their games-as-a-service selection in the future. At a Warner Bros. earnings call today, company CEO David Zaslav emphasized their intent to pursue ongoing monetization in their games.

Here’s the exact quote from Zaslav pulled from Seeking Alpha’s transcript:

Zaslav also confirmed that players have dumped over 700 million hours into Hogwarts Legacy since release. Nonetheless, the company clearly wants to pursue more long-term products. These longer monetization cycles have been a trend in gaming lately, though most have not found success. Even WB’s own Multiversus has been shut down for months, with a murky promise of a re-launch in 2024.

We’ll see if the plan pans out for Warner Bros. In the meantime, we’ll have to see if the Arkham Trilogy sells favorably for them when it launches next month on Switch.

Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds Announced for Mobile; Sign Up for Free Survivor

The Risk of Rain universe is expanding, as Hopoo Games and FRIMA Studio have revealed a new entry to the franchise, Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds! It’ll be coming to mobile platforms soon, but in the meantime, here’s the trailer.

Debuting during today’s Risk of Rain Returns celebration launch, below you’ll find the trailer for Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds.

Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds Trailer

Development is being headed by FRIMA Studio, who have worked on bringing several major IPs to mobile, including Fortnite. They didn’t elaborate much on the project, though they left this message on the official Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds Discord.

“Frima Studio is an established video game outfit from Quebec City. We’re passionate gamers, consummate developers, and—perhaps most importantly—huge fans of Risk of Rain. So when Gearbox Publishing invited us to join them on Petrichor, we felt excited but also a little anxious: expanding the world of Risk of Rain is not something to be taken lightly. And we were determined not to bungle the important responsibility we had been entrusted with, lest we end up on Newt’s bad side. (A thorny situation at the best of times.)

With Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds we’re proposing a top-down, skill-based action adventure. Our game is a side-quel that exists within the same timeline as Risk of Rain 2 but focuses on a different part of the story. Old favorites swing back into action (hello Commando!) alongside new allies, equipped with devastating (and slightly wacky) gear, to explore diverse environments where plenty of danger awaits—some of it familiar, some not. Whatever you do, don’t waste any time: The clock is ticking, and while you stock up on mission items, the power of your foes is surging.

Contrary to our game’s subtitle, we’ve been working hard to make everyone feel welcome in our little corner of the universe—from hardened Risk of Rain veterans to mobile enthusiasts looking for their next favorite franchise. This meant creating a welcoming entry point into the franchise that’s also an engrossing “next chapter” which propels the adventure forward in a satisfying way. And with Gearbox’s unwavering support, walking that tightrope has proven a thrilling and rewarding endeavor, in more ways than one.

But don’t get any cozy ideas: These are hostile worlds, so you better be prepared to face whatever jumps you in those mysterious surroundings.

And beware the Snail-at-Arms.”

Fans can sign up now to be notified when the game goes live via the official website. Signing up will not only help keep you in the loop but also reward you the Mercenary Survivor.

Risk of Rain Hostile Worlds will be coming to both iOS and Android. No release date other than “coming soon” has been given. In the meantime, while you wait for Hostile Worlds, you may want to jump into Risk of Rain Returns, the remake of the original Risk of Rain, which is now available. You can read our full review of Risk of Rain Returns if you need a reason to buy it.

Risk of Rain Returns Review – Cloudy With a Chance of Acclaim

The need for certain remakes may be questionable, but if it brings a good game that may have flown under the radar to a new and eager crowd, it’s surely a risk worth taking. Incidentally, Risk of Rain Returns perfectly fits the bill, a decade after the original release and already with an acclaimed sequel out there, bringing old-school frills to those who skipped it the first time. With more survivors, enhanced graphics, and all the addictive gameplay that made it stand out, this is a remake worth crashlanding into.

When It Rains, It Pours

Risk of Rain Returns remains the same exciting roguelike action platformer as before, but with a new lick of paint, more content, and some technical upgrades. Deceivingly simple, each run quickly goes from the initial moments of quiet into no-holds-barred shootouts, with several enemy types and power-ups contributing to a chaotic performance where skill still plays the bigger role. It’s a game that gets more exciting the more you play, and the more you learn about the best build for your character as you explore the delicious randomness of the drops you unlock in each world which become available to get in subsequent runs.

Risk of Rain Returns Review

One of the biggest innovations in the remake is the introduction of the Providence Trials. This is a succession of extremely diverse challenges, where the selection is gradually expanded as you complete trial after trial. Some of these focus on mobility, others on accuracy, and even some placing you in control of a drone with the goal of shooting a required amount of targets. There are strict circumstances for each trial, including a specific survivor and a timer to keep you on the edge. These single-player challenges are a welcome diversion from the standard gameplay loop, allowing you to experiment with other items and characters, ultimately honing your skills for the main dish.

Three new survivors are added into the mix, including the Drifter and the Pilot. Boosting the numbers of the original 12 to 15 playable characters with very specific requirements to unlock, you have quite the task ahead of you until you get a decent selection to choose from. Best thing is that they are extremely varied both in their base mechanics and skills, and choosing a favorite is one of the hardest tasks you’re going to face.

Time Is of the Essence

Risk of Rain Returns Review

Played solo or in local or online cooperative modes, Risk of Rain Returns is an old-school treat that ends up being an acquired taste. The roguelike nature of the game may not bring any surprises to the genre, but the way that it’s designed makes it perfect for a smooth entry to the genre, easing you into these 2D platforming worlds where difficulty goes from very easy to impossible in a few minutes. The simple mechanics are almost immediately grasped, with the goal of finding the teleporter and defeating a boss being one of the most straightforward ever.

The loop is engaging, and the “just one more run” effect is undisputable as the simple gameplay grows on you and doesn’t let go. The feeling of being able to escape the masses of enemies attacking you from all sides is incredible, the utter chaos of enemies turning into an endless stream of coins you can use to unlock new abilities and the always helpful drones. You may not become stronger at each new run – although you can unlock some permanent alternate skills for survivors – but it’s undeniable that inside, you feel more capable than before of taking on the hordes. And this is the best proof of a good, well-rounded concept that feels rewarding even after hundreds of deaths.

Time management is of utmost importance here, as the longer you stay on a stage, the more difficult it becomes. This brings some considerations into the equation – will you go for fast gameplay and teleport as promptly as possible, or are you taking some time to loot the stages and become a lean, lean, killing machine? The duality on offer is a head-scratching one that is imported from the original, and both approaches are valid while posing their own sets of obstacles.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t some noticeable limitations by design, such as the inability to shoot from ropes or ladders, and the unnecessary difficulty to execute some simple actions that should come naturally, like shooting and walking backwards with the Commando.

Playing in local cooperative mode is a double-edged sword. Players have to stick together or eventually forfeit the game, as an inadvertent fall will result in having two (or more) characters out of the screen area, with no way to see the ropes and reunite, pretty much condemning the whole run. Consequently, online gameplay is the ideal option, and Risk of Rain Returns improves on the rudimentary system of the original by adding a full-fledged online system, with lobbies and all the options that one would expect nowadays. Not a revolutionary step, but a major leap from the first game’s manual port forwarding requirements and the systematic failures to successfully play with someone.

Making New With the Old

Risk of Rain Returns Review

This remake also received a noticeable visual overhaul. The pixel art style remains prominent, but the little touches paint a very different picture. Survivors look more detailed and are animated in a smoother fashion, while the larger creatures, especially bosses, are where the changes jump right at you.

The stages’ graphics were also redesigned, and the changes are extremely appealing. The option to use a more zoomed-out perspective may be more practical in the long run, but the zoomed-in camera allows you to better appreciate the work done on the background and foreground graphics. Some maps are more detailed than others, but the overall revamp is a good one, retaining the spirit of the original while making it more catchy to the eye.

More than an attempt to cash in on the growing popularity of a series that started out in a somewhat niche way, Risk of Rain Returns is a welcomed remake that offers enough quality-of-life improvements and new content to be relevant and appealing to both fans and newcomers to the action roguelike genre. It plays great, has enough content and diversity to keep you entranced for weeks, and the new additions might just be what the game needed to appeal to a crowd that wasn’t attracted by the original. While not perfect, it’s a blasted good time where every frustrating death is nothing but an invitation to another run with renewed confidence.

Rating: 9/10

Pros:

  • An unadulterated display of addictive roguelike gameplay
  • 15 survivors in total, with three new faces
  • Providence Trials mode drastically changes the gameplay for every challenge
  • Visual overhaul is catchy while keeping the essence of the original untouched
  • Online play finally caught up with the times

Cons:

  • Lacks some mechanics that would make the action flow better
  • Local coop is fun until someone drops from a platform

Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Playable Early, But Only Offline; Here’s How

Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer doesn’t officially launch until tomorrow evening, but you can already “play” it if you launch the game offline.

Yes, I know that’s not the same as playing with live players, but hey, if you wanted to look around the maps, test out some guns, and play with bots potentially, you could do so now if you pre-ordered Modern Warfare 3. It at least gives you something to do while you wait for the launch tomorrow. The method to do so is relatively easy, though it seems to only work on consoles atm, so PC players, you’re probably out of luck.

How to Play Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Early (Offline)

  1.  Disconnect the internet from your console, either via settings or unplugging the ethernet if hardwired.
  2. Boot up Modern Warfare 3. When you reach the main screen and start connecting, back out of the connection, and a failed connection error will pop up.
  3. You can now start offline play via the Local Multiplayer mode in the main menu for Modern Warfare 3.

This method works on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Again, PC players will have to wait until release to try the multiplayer.

That’s all there is to it; it’s really that easy! Again, this is offline play, with no progression available. Zombie mode is sadly not available either.

You could at least get a head start and test out weapons and such, especially for those planning on making guides. It could be a perfect way to test damage and recoil of each weapon, though the live mode may end up being different.

Also, to note, DO NOT upload any gameplay or images of playing. While it’s accessible, Activision is issuing DMCA takedowns for those who post things early. So fair warning there. Otherwise, get out there and have some fun, and we’ll see you all tomorrow during the launch tomorrow!

Dead by Daylight Will See Chucky From Child’s Play Crossover Later This Month

The Dead by Daylight crossover collaboration doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, as the newest killer pits players against the horrific serial killer, Charles Lee Ray, better known as Chucky. Catch Chucky in the latest Killer reveal for Dead by Daylight.

Dead by Daylight Chucky Trailer

“Like a tiger on the prowl, you’ll only ever know where Chucky is on his terms; terms that usually involve a knife and his many weapons of choice”, mentions Jason Guzzo, Game Designer on Dead by Daylight. “He adds such a fun flavor of jump scare to the game, and his voice lines are a darkly comedic twist to the gameplay of Dead by Daylight. It has been an absolute honor to add him to our ever-growing roster of Killers.”

Chucky will have a host of abilities, including the Slice & Dice ability that allows him to lunge at survivors. And though he may be short, and possibly Dead by Daylight’s shortest Killer to date, the spirit of Charles Lee Ray will appear to help lift survivors onto hooks and other activities that would need a taller person.

“It’s a character that I never thought we could bring into The Fog because of his size,” notes Mathieu Côté, Head of Partnerships for Behaviour Interactive. “The team has outdone itself to prove me wrong. Players are in for a treat – Chucky in Dead by Daylight really is the unmissable multiplayer horror gaming experience.”

The best thing is, if you didn’t catch it from the trailer, is that Chucky will be voiced by Brad Dourif! He’s been the voice of Chucky ever since he slashed his way onto the big screen back in 1988.

I would have never guessed we ever see Chucky as a killer in the game, and yet here we are. I suppose that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given that. Behavior Interactive has been pumping out these collaborations all year. In an interview with us, they said they had “many more stories to tell,” and they most definitely do by the looks of it.

Chucky will be available on all platforms in Dead by Daylight on November 28.
