Cities: Skylines 2 Announces Revamped Photo Mode Feature in Latest Developer Deep Dive

The final deep dive has been released for Cities: Skylines 2 by publisher Paradox Interactive, taking a peek at their revamped “Photo Mode” highlighting even more features to improve upon their first installment. This time, they’re showcasing the overhauled Cinematic and Free Camera modes, designed to give the player as much freedom as possible with which show off their bustling cities.

Take a look at their own trailer here:

While previously both Cinematic and Free Camera modes existed on their own, they’ve now been merged into one singular button in Cities: Skylines 2, simply called “Photo Mode”.

There’s a lot to unpack about said button and all of its subcategories, but it can be broken down into just a few points.

  • The Camera tab allows for adjustments to the camera itself, such as: Camera Body, Lens and Aperture Shape.
  • The Lens tab gives you control over Depth of Field, Motion Blur, Vignette, Film Grain, Bloom and Panini Projection settings.
  • The Color tab lets you change White Balance, Brightness and adjust the overall Color of your picture.
  • The Weather tab gives you godly abilities to change the weather as you see fit: clouds, fog and the atmosphere as a whole.
  • The Environment tab gives you the option to change the Time of Day, or set the simulation speed, useful for creating videos in the Cinematic mode.

Speaking of the Cinematic Camera feature, you can create full and beautiful videos in Cities: Skylines 2, showcasing your city utilizing whichever of the above properties you have set up. The feature also allows you set up various key points within your playback, allowing you to transition your view of the city through a multitude of angles and settings.

Hell, Cities: Skylines 2’s very own trailer and all of the feature highlights have been designed through this feature. You can see their trailer here:

For more information, you can check out their own feature blog here.

With the release date right around the corner, Cities: Skylines 2 is aiming to beat its predecessor in every aspect possible while trying to keep true to its fans. The game releases on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this October 24, 2023.

XDefiant Release Date Update: Targeting Mid to End of September or Early/Mid-October Launch

While Ubisoft has been adamant in stating that XDefiant will launch sometime in “summer,”  it seems that could be changing. In a new XDefiant release date update, it’s now been revealed that the free-to-play shooter now has two likely release scenarios depending on certification.

In a new message by XDefiant Executive Producer Mark Rubin, he explains the submission process and also talks about where XDefiant is in all this. According to Rubin, they are currently in the “CM prep part of that process” and will hopefully submitting to first-parties (Sony, Xbox) in a little less than two weeks. If that pans out, players can look forward to a mid to end of September release. However, if the game gets a “conditional pass” that requires more fixes and compliance, then chances are, XDefiant will launch in early to mid-October with a Day One update in tow.

For those wondering why there’s no release date, here’s the explanation from Rubin:

So why no firm release date?

If we were following the standard rules for game releases, we would have set a date far enough in advance with enough buffer to have a confident release date. However, like a lot of things with this game, we have not chosen the typical route. Having millions of people play your game long before it’s ready is not normal. Not being afraid to show an unfinished game to millions of people with all its flaws is not normal. These were real tests and not just marketing events. So, when it comes to when we will release the real answer is “as soon as we can.” And we will continue to update you with more info when we have it.

To conclude, we set out since the concept of this game to be more transparent with our community and to listen to our players and act on their feedback. We’ve even shown that we will add features in the middle of development based on player requests. Map Voting which is in now and an S&D-like mode that is coming later are two examples of this. We want this to be your game!

I know that’s a lot of info so thank you for taking the time to read it all. I know it’s been quite a journey to get to this point and I want to thank every single person that has joined us along the way. We really can’t wait to go live and share our passion and love for XDefiant with everyone. Hope to see you all soon in game!

This is a bummer for those hoping the game gets launched in the next two weeks, but at the very least, we now know why there’s no real news on the game’s release window/date.

Report: Embracer Group Plans to Sell Gearbox Software

Embracer Group has been axing their assets left and right ever since their plans for a $2 billion deal with Saudi Arabia fell through back in May. Volition was the latest studio to suffer as a result of Embracer’s downsizing, and it looks like they may be far from the last, as a new report has surfaced stating that Embracer is now looking to offload Gearbox.

According to Bloomberg, Embracer Group shared plans to sell Gearbox Studios in a staff email earlier this morning. The Swedish holding company originally bought Gearbox back in February of 2021. Since then, Gearbox has only released one game in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and published a handful of smaller indie titles including Blanc and Have a Nice Death. Gearbox’s Chief Communications Officer Dan Hewitt had this to say about the studio’s plans following their separation from Embracer:

The base case is that Gearbox remains a part of Embracer. However, there are many options under consideration, including Gearbox’s transfer, taking Gearbox independent, and others. Ultimately, we’ll move ahead with whichever path is best for both Gearbox and Embracer. Nothing has been decided yet, but there will be a lot of speculation in the coming weeks.

While this isn’t necessarily a surprise given all the recent bad news stemming from Embracer, it’s still unfortunate to watch the dominoes fall. Hopefully, not too many other studios and game developers have to face closures or layoffs as a result of Embracer’s failed deal.

Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC Not Off the Table, Larian Explains How They’d Approach It

For those that already conquered Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 and hoping for more content to chew through, while the game doesn’t really lend itself to feature an expansion (no spoilers, please), that doesn’t mean a form of Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC isn’t off the table.

Speaking in a video interview, Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Swen Vincke states that DLC for the hit cRPG isn’t “undoable,” but also touches on how it would likely feature new characters and such, and doesn’t necessarily need to be set at the end of the game.

Q: You talk about uh you know to spell magic also being a breaking thing, you know, levels 1 through 12, you and I both know after 12, things get pretty nuts in D&D. That’s when, like, the spells get just world shattering…hard to capture in a video game stuff, that is why we’re keeping it 1 to 12 for Baldur’s Gate. That also makes it hard to do DLC if you were ever temped.

A: Yeah, well, you could do different things then, so it doesn’t have to be necessarily at the end of the game, and so there’s different ways that you can do that. You could make a level 12 to 20 game. It’s a different game all right, the approach is completely different, so yeah. That would.. different stakes, different environments; most likely different protagonist, antagonists but not undoable. but a bit different.

You can watch the complete 47-minnute interview right here.

While nothing has been confirmed by Larian, this gives those looking for more BG3 content a glimmer of hope. Of course, given how big the game is, you can just start a new adventure and choose different paths and it’d technically be a new game onto itself.

In other BG3 news, the game just got a patch last week, which you can read about here.

In case you haven’t picked it up yet, go read our review where we state, “If you can only purchase a single game for a couple of years because budget is tight, Baldur’s Gate 3 should be the one. The amount of content and the sheer quality in display almost makes it feel like a steal, a game that grows on you and eats the hours away, invading your dreams and making you count the time until you return to it.”

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon Review – For All the Ravens

FromSoftware haven’t just sat on their laurels since last year’s launch of their super-hyped, and super-successful Elden Ring. They were, in fact, busy finishing up Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon. It’s been almost ten years since the last Armored Core game, and slightly longer than that since the last numbered entry. Has all that time away from the series been a good or bad thing for FromSoftware? We’ve spent some time fighting all manner of huge robots, and have the answer to that question in our review.

Earn Your Freedom

In Armored Core 6, the player controls a mech pilot, an augmented human called C4-621. He is locked in indentured servitude to a handler known as Walter, and thus fights on his behalf in an effort to earn his freedom. There’s a magical substance called Coral which corporations fight for, but seeing as you’re a mercenary you’ll essentially just fight for whomever offers the most money. The story here is told mostly through radio conversations, and while it doesn’t do much innovative storytelling, it is passable and mecha fans will probably be pleased with it. The rest of us can appreciate it as an excuse to blow up big-ass robots.

Armored Core 6’smain draw is in its title. The mecha in this series are known as Armored Cores, and they come in many different shapes and sizes. The smaller ones are quicker and more nimble, but have less armor, while the larger ones are basically the reverse. There are even some tetrapod models, with four legs and some tricks up their sleeves with better hover capabilities. Mecha fans are sure to be delighted with the different types of vehicles to choose from and finding the right mix of attributes to best complement their play style.

Not the Prettiest

Armored Core VI is, graphically, a bit underwhelming. Everything scales well to a 4K resolution, but overall the game looks a generation old somehow. Armored cores are well detailed, but the world around them feels like a play set. Now, naturally, most things will appear small next to a mech, but it doesn’t help that most environmental models are simple, and heavy recycling of assets is utilized throughout the campaign. This does at least mean the game runs smooth throughout, and ray tracing is only an option within the garage, or rather the area in which you can kit out your build.

Combat in Armored Core 6 is about as complicated as you might expect. Each armored core has four slots to place weapons or shields, and each limb can be fired independently. That does mean your controls are a bit busier than many action games, but then again this is the piloting of complex vehicles we’re talking about. Weapons range from pistols and energy swords to heavy machine guns, launchers, and laser rifles, and more. There are also defensive options such as shields, but most players will opt to forego those. As they say, sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

Explode Seven Times, Retry Eight

FromSoftware is perhaps better known these days for creating tough-as-nails action RPGs, such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and of course, Elden Ring. But they’ve been making mecha games since even before Demon’s Souls existed. Surprisingly, one thing they have done is softened things up a little bit here. Standard enemies aren’t particularly tough, and most do not do much damage to the player. Boss fights, though, well, those are typical FromSoftware fare, and will kick your ass repeatedly until you get a better build.

But that is sort of the point of FromSoftware games: try, try, try again, until you get the right build mixed with proper tactics to finally beat that boss who just a few minutes ago seemed nigh impossible to fell. There is such an endorphin rush to getting things right after a tough fought victory, and Armored Core VI certainly has that in spades with its boss fights.

Verdict

Unlike their most recent titles, however, Armored Core 6 does not include any kind of co-op. Your multiplayer options are limited to competitive battles only, and the feature has to be unlocked by reaching chapter 3. This does guarantee that anyone you face presumably knows what they’re doing, because defeating most bosses requires knowledge of the game’s mechanics to begin with. The lack of co-op does mean you’re completely on your own in Armored Core 6, which suits the theme of the story but may hurt the game’s accessibility a little bit.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is perhaps the best mecha game currently out. Not that fans of this genre are really spoiled for choice, of course. But FromSoftware has learned a lot while busy crafting other games, as is evident with their latest entry in this venerable series. Solid combat mechanics and endless customization options pair nicely with the okay story to produce a linear action game that caters to its audience. It maybe not their most accessible game, but it rewards those who stick with it and tweak their builds until they are victorious. It’s been a long time coming, but Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon was worth the wait.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • Lots of customization options
  • A good challenge in the boss fights
  • Rewarding combat

Cons:

  • Story isn’t too creative
  • No co-op
  • Graphically underwhelming

Texas Chain Saw Massacre PC Crossplay Still Won’t Be Brought Back in Next Patch, Though It Will Improve Anti-Cheat

Earlier this week, Gun Interactive released a patch for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre that not only fixed stuff, but also disabled crossplay on PC due to rampant cheaters and whatnot. The studio announced that a new patch is set to be released next week, but sadly, the Texas Chain Saw Massacre PC crossplay functionality still won’t be part of the changes.

This was confirmed by the studio in the patch notes released earlier today. According to the studio, they are “one step closer” to reintegrating PC intro crossplay.

  • Tuned: Further Anti Cheat Tuning and Improvements
    • We have continued our work on anti cheat and are one step closer to reintegrating PC into cross play, though we are not there just yet.
    • Players encountering usage of cheats and/or hacks in public PC lobbies, please continue to report them via support.

Here’s to hoping we’ll get another patch soon-ish that will enable crossplay for PC players once again. Once we know more details about that, we’ll let our readers know.

Roblox PS5 and PS4 Versions Releasing in October

The insanely popular children’s online game platform and game creation system Roblox is finally headed to PlayStation platforms! During the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) 2023 event today, the company announced that the Roblox PS5 and PS4 versions are set to be released sometime in October 2023!

Alongside the PlayStation versions, the game will also be released on Meta Quest as well. Previously, Roblox was only playable on PC, mobile devices and Xbox One.

No word yet on whether this will be a straight port PlayStation consoles or if players can expect something extra from it.

According to data, as of August 2020, the free-to-play game has over 164 million monthly active users! Roblox claims that there are over 60 million players a day, which is an insane number and puts everything else in gaming to shame.

Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel and released in 2006, Roblox allows players to create their own games and experiences using its own engine. While the game is F2P, the company earns from its in-game virtual currency called “Robux” that players can buy for skins, items in-game and more.

As a parent who has a kid addicted to Roblox, you might want to ready yourself when your kids start interfering with your PlayStation time in order to play the game on a big screen.

Thanks, Reddit!

Mortal Kombat 1 Jean-Claude Van Damme Trailer Punches Out

Mortal Kombat 1 is looking better than ever. NetherRealm Studios has just put out a Mortal Kombat 1 Jean-Claude Van Damme trailer showcasing the classic action star as Johnny Cage. This follows the recent announcement of Megan Fox as the voice of Nitara. As expected, the trailer is full of guts, gore, and gruesome violence. Check it out below:

Judging by everything we can see in the trailer, Van Damme will bring the usual star-studded and quippy energy that Johnny Cage fans have come to know and love to the character. He holds his own against Raiden, Geras, and even the original Johnny Cage, finishing the latter off in magnificent fashion with a fatality that involves kicking his enemy through a sports car window before slicing them in half with the driver’s side door.

The Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage will be available in the Premium Edition of Mortal Kombat 1, which is available for pre-order now.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19, 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

UFC 5 Preview – Blood & Impact Improvements, Cinematic KO Replays

MP1st was invited by EA to check the game out behind closed doors where we got to see the gameplay improvements and changes made from the 2020 entry, talk to the devs and more. Read on for our initial impressions of the combat sim in our UFC 5 preview.

If you thought the last few iterations of EA Sports’ UFC games were toned down when it came to blood and body damage, especially compared to UFC 2, you probably weren’t alone. Lucky for us, it seems that the team at EA Sports has finally taken that feedback to heart, as the newest iteration in their fighter franchise, UFC 5, is going all out with the blood, promising significant improvements to earn that M rating.

With the team now moving over to the Frostbite engine for the first time in the UFC series, it means that they are now capable of delivering several significant improvements. One of those improvements is around blood and the damage system, which is seeing a massive overhaul with the release of UFC 5. Just how big of a change, you ask? Well, enough for UFC 5 to earn an M rating from the ESRB, and we got to see it firsthand behind a closed presentation. Trust us when we say this: expect buckets of blood to fill your screen in this year’s UFC game.

We were showcased a few of the different cuts and damages a fighter could take. However, the big visual change was undoubtedly the pools of blood that would drip from the fully covered faces of these fighters, down their bodies, and fly everywhere in the arena.

The team then went over several aspects of the blood and damage system, detailing that there are eight different regions for cuts, bruises, and swelling to take place, each having its level of progression that can be combined with one another for a whopping 64,000 different possibilities of facial damage that fighters can sustain. All this is to push the authenticity of a fight closer to real life.

But blood isn’t the only improvement in this year’s UFC, as players can expect more realistic face and body deformation with the new real impact system. A broken nose, bruising, swelling, and leg damage were some of the effects of this system that we saw, though don’t expect any career-ending injuries, as producer Nate Mcdonald tells us “Violence is not gratuitous for the sake of being gratuitous.”

What’s more, the damage done isn’t just a visual indicator, as it also plays into the fighter’s attributes, altering them drastically depending on the type of damage received. The commentators will cleverly make call-outs when a fighter has received significant damage to let players know without being too obvious. And because of this new system, there are now doctors onsite who can halt a fight for checks and even stop them entirely. Again, this year’s UFC is all about authenticity, though we’re hopeful this isn’t going to be a common way to end matches in the game.

To help showcase all this, EA has added a new replay feature dubbed “Cinematic KO Replays.” This will replay KOs (knockouts) in slow motion, focusing and enhancing the visuals and sound effects of a knockout, so you can witness some of the most brutal impacts ever seen in a UFC game. Nothing is held back in these replays, as you’ll see the horrific effects caused by impacts during a UFC fight. In the short replay clip, we saw bodies rippling, jaws snapping, heads bobbling, and blood pouring out. It truly left a lasting impression that left a smile on my face as a dash of nostalgia began to fill my thoughts from the good ole days of Fight Night Champion.

There were plenty of other new features shown, which we’ll go over in everything we learned about the UFC feature, but I really wanted to get out there and talk more about the blood and body damage improvements. I think this looks to be quite the yearly improvement UFC fans have been craving, especially with the engine change. I’m just hoping that the game manages to deliver, and luckily, we won’t have long to wait, as UFC 5 is launching on October 27 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
