Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Deflect Guide – How to Take Down Opponents in Style

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s Deflect mechanic is very similar to parries in other Soulsborne or action games, but it does have unique benefits and quirks that make Deflect different from traditional parry systems. Today, we’ll be going over how Deflect works in this Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Deflect guide, including the different types of Deflect and how you can learn to master this crucial gameplay mechanic.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Deflect Guide

What is Deflect in Wo Long?

In Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Deflect is a move that lets you deflect an enemy attack at the last second. Doing so will allow you to dodge the incoming move and often leave the opponent open for a return attack. Deflecting requires precise timing, as you’ll need to use it right before the enemy is about to land an attack.

Successfully using Deflect also lowers the enemy’s Spirit and reduces the lower end of the Spirit Gauge. When the lower end of the Spirit Gauge is reduced, it becomes a lot easier to fully lower the Gauge and give you an opening to land a Fatal Strike, a high damage-dealing move that can only be used on defenseless enemies.

Because of all these benefits, Deflect is a move that you must master early on in order to be able to face some of the game’s more challenging fights.

Types of Deflect

There are two types of Deflect that you can use during a fight. The first is the basic Deflect, which simply allows you to dodge an incoming attack. You execute this by pressing the Deflect button once, and you can input a direction of your choice while doing so.

The second type of Deflect is the Deflect Counterattack. This not only allows you to dodge an attack but also land a counterattack in the process. You also switch your equipped melee weapon when using this move.

Knowing how to use both types of Deflect can be very useful over the course of a boss fight, but you may have an easier time with basic Deflects as they’re simpler to pull off.

When to Deflect

Now that you know how Deflect works, you may be wondering: when do you actually press the Deflect button? The simple answer is that enemies have different types of attacks, and this means that the timing of your Deflect will differ from enemy to enemy. Some attacks have little to no wind-up, meaning that you need to Deflect as soon as you see the beginning of the attack animation. On the other hand, some attacks are also very slow, which can throw you off and cause you to Deflect early, leaving you vulnerable to the actual hit.

Because of this, learning Deflect all boils down to fighting enemies and learning their attack patterns. Generally, you’ll want to press Deflect right before you think the attack is going to hit you. When fighting a boss for the first time, it’s okay to take a hit or two to figure out how long the attack takes before it lands. Just be sure to remember the timing the next time you challenge the boss so that you will be able to dodge it without issue.

Sometimes, it can be very difficult to wait out a Deflect, especially against Critical Blows, since the tells are extremely obvious with the red glow. You will need to restrain yourself and hold until the last second, as using Deflect a second too early can result in your death.

The harsh truth about Deflect is that it’s really a matter of skill and knowledge. You not only need to learn the enemy’s moves but also have the ability to time the Deflects just right. For those who haven’t used parry mechanics in games before, this can be pretty tough, but for better or worse, the game basically forces you to learn the mechanic in order to progress.

Closing Thoughts

While parries in other games simply reward you with a counterattack window, Deflects in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty make it much easier to land Fatal Strikes and deal significant damage. Learning how to Deflect may take time, but once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you’ll be able to take down enemies in style.

Activision Revenue in 2022: PlayStation Accounted for 13%, While Microsoft Numbers Too Low to Register

It looks like Activision’s revenue when it comes to consoles comes primarily from Sony’s PlayStation division especially if compared to Microsoft.

In Activision’s latest SEC filing, the company disclosed that Sony’s PlayStation division (called Sony Interactive Entertainment) accounted for 13% of Activision’s revenue in 2022, while Microsoft’s was so low that it failed to even register in the report.

Image

As you can see from the report’s notes, Microsoft didn’t even account for 10% of revenue in the timeframe. Surprisingly enough, it looks like Apple is the top moneymaker, which is no doubt buoyed by Activision-Blizzard’s strong mobile presence.

I have to admit, I didn’t expect the gap to be this big. I mean, Call of Duty has been marketed as a Sony game for the last few years, but even so, there’s bound to be millions of gamers playing not only Call of Duty but Blizzard games on Xbox, right?

Are you surprised at this number or were you expecting it given the PlayStation’s dominance in the previous generation of consoles and in the current one?

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Best Settings for Consoles

If you like tinkering with in-game options for the best optimal experience when you play a game, we’re here to help you get the most out of your experience in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty! Check out our quick and handy Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty best settings guide for consoles!

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Best Settings (Consoles):

Game Settings:

Most of the options located under the game settings are good as they are, though there are a few things for those looking for a bit of customization.

Head equipment, melee, and range weapons can all be toggled to appear on the character during certain instances. If you always want to see your character’s head, you toggle the helmet option off.

For weapons, you have two options: show them on the character at all times, show only the one in active use, or only offer them whenever they are drawn.

The bow is the same; you can have it shown on the character or only when you use it.

You’ll find more “show” options on page two of the game settings. If you like seeing numbers, you can toggle the health and spirit gauge to display numbers.

For copper, which is the in-game currency, you can change this to always show, or show when its value changes.

Page 3 of game settings features some lock-on options. Again, the default is fine, but we turned off both auto-locking options. It’s easy to get swarmed by enemies, so auto-locking to one during melee can lock to the wrong one. Also, auto-locking after defeating an enemy can also lock on the wrong enemy. If you like controlling who you target, turn both those options off.

The last page of in-game settings offers camera animations. In Wo Long, if an enemy performs a fatal attack that puts you in their animation or you perform a fatal blow, the camera will follow your character along the animations. It gives it a cinematic look and helps you not fight with the camera during combat. There is another to disable camera animation when summoning a divine beast. You can keep all of them enabled, but if there is one you think you might want to disable, then I would disable the camera animations for Divine Beasts.

Menu Settings

You’ll find font sizes under this menu. Self-explanatory, if you need larger or smaller font, this is the menu to do it in.

Graphics Settings

As always, I recommend disabling motion blur for a cleaner picture during movement. You’ll also find the graphical modes here for the PS5 and Xbox Series. You can either prioritize frame rate or resolution. Because this is a fast-paced action game, we suggest using the frame rate option.

Audio

Keep all this as default unless you have speakers or are using headphones; then, you can change to those presets.

Camera

You’ll find the camera speed and inverted view here. Everything should be fine with the default, but ensure auto-aim assist and auto obstacle avoidance are turned on. Those will help out, especially during the closed quarter areas.

Online Settings

There are three options here that we recommend you tweak, those being; matching area, matching with users of PS4/Xbox One system, and invasions by hostile players.

Matching area lets you matchmake with players based on where they are in the level. Default, it’s no restriction, which we recommend keeping, but you can also set it to players in the same area or nearby.

Matching with users of PS4/Xbox One system. This is an option only found on the PS5 and Xbox Series. There is no crossplay between different platforms, but console players can play with one another between each console generation. Default, it’s on, though there is a good reason why you would want to turn this off. Disabling this will let you matchmake with players on the same console, meaning load times will be faster during co-op play since everyone will be using a current-gen console. If you matchmake with a last-gen console player, you’ll experience longer loading screens and show up in a level before them (so more waiting).

DualSense Edge/Xbox Elite Back Button Recommendation

The ideal set-up for Wo Long on either the DualSense Edge or Xbox Elite is the map the up and right/left d-pad to one of the back buttons. Up is to consume an item, where left or right is the navigation to which item you want to use.

Wo Long DualSense Edge Xbox Elite

The reason why we recommend mapping those two buttons is that those will be the main ones that force you to take your thumb off the sticks. Being able to use an item, while still moving around can be a lifesaver. Additionally, when you hold R2, using up or down will swap weapons, with left and right swapping between your throwables. This setup makes the experience far better in my opinion since you’ll never have to remove your thumb off the stick during combat.

That’s all there is for console settings for Wo Long. It’s not an option-filled game, but even then, most of the default ones are good as they are. The main ones are going to be the online options, and for those with pro controllers, which buttons to map. Otherwise, that’s really all there is. Hopefully, this guide is helpful, and if it is, you may find our other Wo Long guides to be helpful, so be sure to check them out!

Minecraft Update 1.20 Name Revealed as “Trails & Tales,” Minecraft Monthly Show Debuts

Since its original announcement, the Minecraft update 1.20 never really had a name, at least, until now. Minecraft 1.20’s name is “Trails & Tales,” with the update focusing on exploring the world of Minecraft and its mysterious past.

The name was announced in Minecraft Monthly, a new series that will cover everything Minecraft-related across all of its titles in a news-like format. You can check it out below:

Here’s what Vanilla Minecraft Game Director Agnes Larsson had to say about Trails & Tales:

The 1.20 update is all about self expression, specifically self expression through representation, story telling, and world building. And, it’s the journey – your trails – that ties it all together. The Minecraft worlds belong to the players – and so do the stories, or tales, about those worlds.

Alongside the name announcement, Minecraft Monthly also went over recent news regarding Mojang’s other titles, including Minecraft Dungeons, which is coming to PlayStation Plus, and Minecraft Legends, with its April 18 launch.

Despite saving the name reveal till the very end, this Minecraft Monthly didn’t give any update on 1.20’s release date. As such, we still have no clue when it’ll come out, but with more and more snapshots and betas featuring 1.20’s additions, we may get more information some time in the near future.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Character Creation Guide – Body Types, Facial Features, and More

This Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty character creation guide will go over all the options you can expect to make use of when making your character. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty shares a lot of similarities with traditional Soulsborne games, and this includes a highly customizable character creation menu. You’re able to create all sorts of unique characters for your playthrough, and if you’d rather get right into the action, the presets are also equally great.

Note that because the character creation menu is so detailed and complex, we’ll only elaborate on some of the more major features and sliders, but this should give you a good idea of what you’re able to do in character creation.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Character Creation Guide

Base

The Base settings let you change your character’s overall appearance as well as give you preset options if you’re the type of player who prefers to skip character creation. The figure type dictates your character’s body type, with options for male-looking and female-looking body types to choose from. You can choose personal pronouns too, which do not affect your body type or voice. The available appearance template options also change depending on what body type you’ve selected.

Aside from body type, you can also choose your skin color and skin type. Skin color is self-explanatory, whereas skin type refers to your skin’s overall complexion. You have a lot of freedom in choosing your skin color, so feel free to fiddle around with the values until you land on something that you like.

Face

The face is a human’s most unique and defining physical characteristic, and you can make all sorts of characters with the options available to you in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The Aging option, for example, lets you decide how old your character looks. You can also make various changes to various parts of your character’s face, including their eyes, nose, and mouth, among other places.

As there are tons of options to work with, it can be a bit overwhelming to a player who comes across a character creation menu this complex for the first time. For those who can’t seem to land on a configuration that they like, we recommend going back to the Base section of the character creation screen and choosing a template to find a face that suits your fancy. You can then tweak the other settings as you see fit.

Hair

Giving your character a unique hair color may not be for everyone, especially if you’d rather make a more grounded-looking one, but for those who want to go all out with customization, you have lots of hair color options. You can choose from various hairstyles as well as multiple hair colors, and the hair tip options add even more complexity to the look. There are also a few presets that you can either use directly or as inspiration for your own hairstyle configuration.

Facial Hair

While the facial hair options don’t seem all that detailed at a glance, you have a few settings that you’re able to work with. You can change both your mustache and your beard hair, and you’re also able to choose a color for facial hair that’s separate from the rest of your hair. If you’d rather just pick something that looks good enough right away, there are some presets that you can make use of, too.

Makeup

The Makeup section lets you add complexity to your face in the form of shadows, tones, and more. While some may skip this section entirely, it can really make a difference, especially during cutscenes. You can have elaborate makeup that stands out or more subtle makeup to give your face more structure and form. There are also face paint options for those who want a more exotic or aggressive look.

Body

The Body section lets you customize just your character’s height, muscle density, and more. You can change your head size, adjust shoulder width, and use different body accessories. Of course, not all of the options you choose here will stand out while wearing the various armor you’ll find throughout the game, but if you end up going for something light and revealing, then you may want to put a bit of thought into how your body looks.

Voice

Finally, you can select from a decent set of voices for both body types. The voice will depend on the body type you choose, but you can change the pitch of any voice you go with using the slider option. There’s quite a bit of variety with the voice options, too, so alongside pitch modification, you should be able to find the grunts and screams that you’re looking for.

Whether you spend hours scrolling through the customization options or a few seconds skimming through the various templates, Wo Long’s character creation menu is one that can definitely produce some great-looking results.

Modern Warfare Update 1.66 Deployed This March 2

Infinity Ward has released the (Call of Duty) COD: Modern Warfare update 1.66 on all platforms. This is an unannounced title update, which means this won’t bring in any major piece of content, but rather, gameplay adjustments and the like. Read on for what’s new in the Modern Warfare March 2 patch notes.

Modern Warfare Update 1.66 Patch Notes | Modern Warfare March 2 Patch Notes:

Infinity Ward nor Raven Software have said anything about today’s patch just yet. One thing that we know has been added is the Shoot the Ship playlist (via luisstrikesout)! This means that players who love fast and chaotic action can see the Shipment and Shoot House maps lumped into their own playlist once again.

We’re keeping an eye out and have reached out to Activision to ask whether this title update brings new adjustments, fixes or even cosmetics. If we hear anything back, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.

Watch Dani Brutalize the Zombie Horde in Over 14 Gory Minutes of New Dead Island 2 Gameplay

As promised, Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver have finally released over 14 minutes of new Dead Island 2 gameplay, following the melee-focused Slayer Dani as she navigates through the zombie-infested Beverly Hills region to reach the fictional Halperin Hotel evacuation centre. Dani proves more than a match for the undead horde with her devastating melee weapons, customizable abilities, and the “Fury Mode” that lets players tap into the all-consuming aggression buried in their Corrupted DNA.

Watch the gameplay video below:

New Dead Island 2 Dani Gameplay – Combat, Weapon Mods, Skill Customization, Fury Mode & More:

Though Dead Island 2’s playable character roster is only six-strong, the game is filled to the brim with weapon variety and customization options that allow players to completely re-spec at will and take on anything the zombies have to throw at them. Slayers can swap out their active abilities through the Skill Card menu to comfortably adapt to any combat situation. Though Dani’s kit encourages melee combat with her heavy-attack explosion and health regen ability, she has access to pistols, revolvers, rifles, and a host of other ranged weapons for those who prefer to keep their hands clean.

Each weapon can be modded at workshops with a vast selection of abilities, infusions, and stat upgrades. Particularly interesting is a set of Wolverine-like claws infused with electricity, with which Dani cleaves through shocked enemies. Environmental objects provide yet another combat approach, with players able to chain reactive elements (through blowing up transformers, lighting fuel on fire etc.) to damage and disable several enemies at once. “Curveballs” allow players to manipulate the weaknesses of the undead through

Though the undead population may seem fairly easy to curb-stomp, players will also encounter Apex-class mutant zombies that are uniquely empowered and pose a heightened level of challenge to the overzealous, such as a mutant zombie that is immune to fire. Slayers are themselves empowered with “Fury Mode,” in which the Slayers’ latent Corrupted DNA temporarily takes over (duration replenished in combat) and grants them increased damage, health, and movement speed.

HELL-A isn’t all about combat, however. Besides the main story, the world of Dead Island 2 is populated with a host of side quests and collectibles, and a quest in the style of the phone booth contracts in the Grand Theft Auto series is also shown in the gameplay video.

Dead Island 2 goes live on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on April 21, 2023.

Studio Flare: Minds Behind BlazBlue & Senran Kagura Form New NetEase-Funded Studio Focused on Console Games

BlazBlue series creator and Guilty Gear director Toshimichi Mori and former Marvelous (Senran Kagura, God Eater 3) executive Toshinori Aoki have formed “Studio Flare,” a Tokyo-based video game studio focused on developing console games with funding from NetEase Games (Naraka: Bladepoint, Diablo Immortal). The studio is “focusing on console games,” and is now hiring for multiple creative and development positions to create “unique games that are conscious of Asia and the rest of the world.”

With the creation of the BlazBlue series and directorial work on Guilty Gear under his belt, Mori left Arc System Works after nearly two decades at the company last September. Meanwhile, Sega alum and Marvelous Entertainment Executive Vice President Aoki also recently left his role at the company, and the two have now joined forces to create Studio Flare with its first office under construction near Gotanda Station in Tokyo. Aoki will serve as Studio Flare’s president and CEO, while Mori has assumed the role of development producer and executive vice president.

Game development at the studio “is centered on Mori,” who is seeking to create “unique games that are conscious of Asia and the rest of the world.” The studio has not yet announced its first project, but is currently hiring 2D and 3D artists (with Unreal Engine experience) as well as server and infrastructure engineers. With Mori leading development, it is fairly likely that any project from the team will be grounded in his past experience in creating fighting games.

For more information, head on over to Studio Flare’s official website (in Japanese), and stay tuned here at MP1st for all upcoming announcements from the studio.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Review – A Divine Beast

After two years of development, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Team Ninja’s next new franchise, has finally arrived! Is it the Nioh successor you were hoping for? Or does it fall under the weight of all the Souls-like games before it? Read on for the MP1st Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty review.

The Three Kingdoms

Taking place during the era of the Later Han Dynasty, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will see players through a dark, fantasized version of The Three Kingdoms. Like all Souls-borne-inspired titles, you’ll start as a customizable nameless soldier whose fate becomes intertwined with the heroes and villains of the era. A dark and sinister force has arisen, and with it, demons inspired by Chinese Folklore have begun wreaking havoc on the land. Those once thought to be noble heroes have become corrupted, and it’s up to you to end their reign of terror. Luckily you won’t be alone, as along the way, you’ll meet a number of familiar historical figures who will fight alongside you until the very end.

In terms of story, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty shares a similar format as Nioh 1 and 2, Team Ninja’s previous title.

It’s a deep story if you can follow it, with lots to tell, and like Nioh, you should expect the main campaign to be long, with it taking roughly 14-18 hours for me to complete. You’ll have several main missions, each providing context to the story, be that dialogue from a companion tagging along or through stunning and gorgeously done CGI videos. Not to mention there are loads of side missions and a NG+ that offers higher difficulty. Replay value is nothing you should worry about here.

Additionally, there is a small hub zone that players can visit. Meeting and saving NPCs along your journey will populate this hub zone, but you’ll most likely visit for the blacksmith.

If you loved the tale in Nioh, you’ll take a liking to the one in Wo Long. I know I enjoyed it, and although it was hard to follow at times, I still had lots of fun playing through and seeing Team Ninja’s spin on these historical characters.

One thing I liked more in Wo Long than in Nioh is how streamlined the missions are. A small change is there’s no map overview anymore that lets you move a cursor around and select missions. It’s all listed, divided by chapters, a welcomed change.

Then there’s how the game handles main missions. If you find yourself in a bind and want to go off and grind a side mission or go and visit the blacksmith, you can leave anytime and come back later to continue progression. You won’t have to start all over if you decide you aren’t ready to face the boss yet.

Shadows Die Twice

One of the most significant differences between Wo Long and Nioh is the introduction of Spirit Gauge. Every enemy has a spirit gauge that can be filled to cause spirit disruption, allowing you to perform a fatal blow (think posture bar from Sekiro). At the same time, you also have one, where if filled, enemies can stun you momentarily, leaving you open to attacks.

It’s an interesting system, though, in execution, it does feel a bit messy. There’s a push-pull mechanic with it, and while it’s tied to the defensive portion of combat, it’s also connected to your offense. There may not be a stamina bar in Wo Long, but the Spirit Gauge somewhat serves as one, as it’ll limit the heavy attacks you can deal with and even your magic usage.

I’m not a magic main, but I can see where this system limits those who plan on using a complete magic build, as I found the cost far too high. That spirit gauge fills up for every magic and heavy strike you perform. It doesn’t take much either, as a few spells will top it off. I could land a couple of spells on a boss, but the window for them to follow up with an attack and leave you stunned is tiny, where you’d be better off conserving the gauge for light and heavy attacks and a mix of martial arts (weapon’s specials).

Personally, I’m not a fan of the spirit gauge being tied to the offensive side of Wo Long, as it limits what you can and can’t do. Magic already feels relatively weak in Wo Long outside a few higher-level spells, enchantments, and enemy weaknesses, and the spirit gauge makes it even worse. It’s not to say that magic is useless in Wo Long, but its cost outweighs the benefits. This is probably due to Team Ninja learning from Nioh, as magic in those games could get ridiculously out of hand. That’s not to say that using magic is impossible, but you’ll find Wo Long is much more lenient to those playing the parry/deflection game instead, which is the defensive side of the spirit gauge.

Deflection is critical in Wo Long, as every enemy attack can be fatal, especially the ones that cause animation locks. These deflection windows are small, but weapon choice and stats can help counteract that by increasing it and making it more accessible. It definitely takes time to get used to, but once you get past the intro (a part I even found challenging), the system will eventually click.

It’s enjoyable for the most part if you can get over the learning curve, though in the mid to late portion of the game, it did get overwhelming with tighter windows.

Another difference is the moral and fortitude system. Enemies have moral levels, and the higher it is, the more challenging they’ll be. Every time you start a mission, you’ll have zero moral. Slaying enemies will increase that moral, but securing flags will raise the base level of it, so when you die, you’ll always start at a specific moral rank. It’s another leveling system on top of your standard soul leveling. Leveling it will decrease the damage taken from enemies, as well as unlock spells and abilities restricted by low moral ranking.

I don’t know how I feel about the system. On the one hand, it’s an excellent way to make the game harder than it is, but on the other hand, I felt it reinforces the idea of rushing through stages. That likely isn’t its fault entirely, as the stages aren’t what I call memorable. Wo Long suffers from the same issue that Nioh had, where once you’ve played the first few missions, you’d have likely seen most of what the game has to offer.

Environments all had the same look and feel, and the enemy variation didn’t help much either. Sure, they may have a different layout, but there’s so much copy and pasting that it all starts to blend in. They’re “larger,” but that doesn’t mean much when it reuses the same thing repeatedly.  Don’t be surprised if you feel like the levels are ripped straight out of Nioh either, as there were constant reminders throughout.

At some point mid-game, it started to feel more like a drag, with the moral system limiting you from speed running to the boss, so you end up running to the flags instead. To be clear, I don’t typically run through levels in a Souls game, I like to take my time, but that’s hard to do when facing a group of rank 15 moral enemies while at rank 0.

That could be a me problem, but I can’t say I was too fond of the system by the end of the game. It felt like it was there solely to inflate the difficulty artificially so that you could be forced to navigate to parts of the map.

Nioh players will also take notice of the lack of stances and skill trees for weapons. While the combat of Wo Long is fun, the lack of the two mentioned mechanics, plus having a small loot pool, does make it lack variation with its combat. Weapons have martial arts (special attacks pre-rolled) that add to it, at least.

That doesn’t mean that the combat is worse than Nioh. Quite the opposite, as I found it to be Wo Long’s biggest strength. It’s more akin to, say, Sekiro than it is Nioh, putting a heavy focus on the weapons and players’ skills and ability to predict and deflect attacks rather than what kind of builds you can make (though that’s there.) Crazy combos from Nioh are still very much possible, and with seamless weapon switching still intact, you’ll find the combat relatively fast-paced and loaded with action. I liked the combat a lot; it’s just the mechanics in-between it could have been fleshed out more or better designed.

If you’re finding the game to be too hard though you could always summon a friend, ask for help online, and even recruit AI companions. Because the review process was light on the former options, I opted to use the AI companions during my playthrough. They can be a bit dumb at times but found them to be more helpful when taking on mobs, or aggro-ing a boss.

There are also Divine Beats, which work in a similar fashion as Guardian Spirits from Nioh. They have two ways of being used, one is summoning which summons a beast to perform a special attack or ability, and the other is resonation. Resonation essentially imbues the power of a Divine Beast on your character or weapon, granting you a number of effects. Those effects all depend on which Divine Beast you select, but they all apply some form of elemental on weapons and two additional effects. So for example, Divine Beast Qilin will apply stone damage on a weapon, with a decrease in HP damage taken and an increase in spirit recovery for as long as it’s active.

It’s not as flashy as Guardians Spirits were, but for the most part, players familiar with the mechanics should know what they’re getting with it. Definitely helps shake up the combat, and I found using it in Wo Long to have far more strategic value than it did in Nioh. An excellent system that I’m glad to see being build upon.

A Note on Performance

Performance is hit-and-miss. If you’re playing this on the PS4 (and PC), you’ll notice major drops, which doesn’t help for a game so focused on its deflection mechanic. The PS5 has dips also, though a far more stable experience overall. Where that extra power doesn’t help is during online co-op, as anytime we attempted this, we found it to be a lag-filled, buggy mess. Seeing a boss teleport around the screen and deal damage without performing any animations was all too frustrating. We’ve even had instances where they would get locked into an endless animation loop. There was a point where we wasted 30 minutes draining a boss of their life because they got stuck in a loop, only for it to become unkillable on the last slither of health. Sure, we were wrong to take advantage of the bug, but even the bugs had bugs. I’ve had a few crashes here and there too. If you’re coming off Nioh, you’ll definitely feel Wo Long is a less polished version of it.

PS4 load times are long too, which is surprising considering that Nioh load times were short. In one instance, I counted almost a full minute of loading. It’s worse in co-op because multiple load screens play out consecutively. The PS5 load times are a lot better, comparable to Nioh on the PS4, but not instant like the native release of Nioh on the PS5. Graphically, it looks ok on the PS5, but the PS4 version is something else. It looks to lack any kind of anti-aliasing, and textures aren’t all that good, with inconsistency and moments where they don’t fully load. Draw distances are considerably worse.

The version that last-gen console owners are getting is more disappointing than anything. It’s playable and still fun, but when you look at what the team accomplished with Nioh, you cannot help but point out how much of a step down it is technical-wise. A patch might be able to address all this, but as of right now, expect Wo Long to have some issues going into launch. PC players may want to hold off a bit based on the demo.

Verdict

The big issue I have with Wo Long Dynasty is that it wants to be something different from Nioh but can’t quite escape its shadow. Because of that, it feels like a lesser version, stripping away what made Nioh so great for a somewhat barebones version. I had no expectations that I was going to get Nioh 3 here; I was hoping for the opposite, something new and fresh. However, after playing through its meaty campaign and nearly every side quest, I can’t shake that feeling of familiarity, and the comparisons between the two are almost impossible not to make. Is it bad? Not at all, but it could have been much more.

Overall, I do think Wo Long has a good starting foundation that I’m sure other players in the community will be able to master more than I do. I don’t want to claim I’m an expert at the game (despite finishing NG+ on hard,) but I have seen others based on the demo manage to pull things off I haven’t. Basically what I’m saying is that the things I disliked, aren’t necessarily going to be the things the community dislike.

Wo Long is still an entertaining game to play through. Its combat is solid, making it closer to Sekiro, Ninja Gaiden, and even Onimusha, though I do feel some things could have been fleshed out more. Souls and Nioh fans will no doubt be right at home with this, as it certainly scratches that Soul itch, and for that, I do recommend you play the game at some point.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Combat is a fantastic mix of Nioh and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  • Parry system is satisfying and great once you’ve nailed it down.
  • Unique bosses that are fun and challenging.

Cons:

  • Levels feel and look the same after a while, and if you played Nioh, then prepare to see similar designs.
  • Enemy variation comes in light.
  • Moral and fortitude systems can make combat feel like a drag and add repetition.
  • Performance isn’t all that good on last-gen consoles and PC. Current-gen (PS5, and Xbox Series) are rock solid though.
  • Co-op was buggy, filled with enemy lags and other strange bugs.
  • Audio appears to randomly break, example here

The Wolf Among Us 2 Delayed to 2024 to Avoid Dev Crunch and Burnout

A bit of unfortunate news for fans of Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us sequel has just been released. The Wolf Among Us 2 is delayed to 2024, with the goal of giving enough time to developers so that they shouldn’t feel burnout or have to deal with crunch time.

Telltale Games posted an official statement via the studio’s Twitter account.

The company also spoke with IGN to give more information regarding the decision. CEO Jamie Ottilie stated that it wouldn’t do for the studio to release the game in an unfinished state. “Making games is difficult and they need time to be right. And it doesn’t do any of us any good to ship something that’s not ready,” he claims.

Ottilie also goes on to state that during development, Telltale Games decided to make the switch from Unreal Engine 4 to 5 due to various features that interested the team, but this resulted in “quite a bit of work” that resulted in the aforementioned delay.

While The Wolf Among Us 2 won’t be dropping this year, the studio is dropping one title later in 2023. Titled “The Expanse: A Telltale Series,” a trailer for this sci-fi game just released a couple of weeks ago, and you can check out the gameplay trailer here.

The Long Dark Update 2.03 Out This March 2

Developer Hinterland Studio has released The Long Dark update 2.03 today for all platforms. The team is still getting ready for new DLC coming later this month. Check out The Long Dark March 2 patch notes below.

The Long Dark Update 2.03 Patch Notes | The Long Dark March 2 Patch Notes:

Although no official patch notes have been revealed yet, Hinterland Studio did posted a development update not too long ago. You can read the details below.

Dev Update:

We have a few updates about the development progress around TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, the paid Expansion Pass for Survival Mode, which we launched on Steam (Windows-only) on December 5th.

TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, Part One: Mac Version

We’re happy to announce that we were able to fix the issues that prevented the Mac build of TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY from working. The Test Team is finalizing the build and it is due for release on Wednesday, February 15th on Steam and the Epic Game Store. This will bring the Mac version to parity with Windows.

TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, Part One: Xbox and PlayStation Versions

The team is working hard on finalizing and testing these versions. We’ve encountered a few hiccups with the respective store setups, but we have found some workarounds. The current target date for Xbox and PlayStation releases of TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY is Wednesday, March 15th. This will bring Steam, Epic Game store, Xbox, and PlayStation versions to parity. Please keep in mind, Xbox and PlayStation will need to approve these new versions, which may affect the release date. We will provide confirmation closer to launch.

We’ll have more news on the Nintendo Switch version in the coming weeks.

SAVE SYSTEM OVERHAUL WITH TALES, PART ONE

As a reminder, as part of splitting the game between Story and Survival Modes, we have made some necessary changes to help future-proof the save system in THE LONG DARK, and to enable you to receive improvements to the game moving forward.

As a result, unfortunately current Survival Mode saves will not work with the game once you download the Update for Part One of TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY. This is true even if you do not purchase the Expansion Pass.

This change will not impact Feats, Feats progress, Achievements, or WINTERMUTE saves.

TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, Part Two: Launch Date & Features

We are currently targeting a launch for TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, PART TWO on Thursday, March 30th. This will be for the Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Epic Games Store versions. The work on Part Two is nearly complete, and will be entering the Testing phase soon. Please keep in mind that the release date may be impacted by development realities.

Prepper Bunker Overhaul
Prepper Bunker Overhaul – Available in Part Two of TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY

The feature and content set for Part Two will include:

(For those who own TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY)

  • Tale: “Signal Void” (estimated 5+ hours of play time to complete)
  • Handheld Shortwave Radio
  • Transponder Cache Gameplay
  • New Bunkers
  • Three new Clothing items

(For anyone that owns THE LONG DARK or SURVIVAL EDITION)

  • Enhanced Prepper Bunkers
  • Enhanced Beachcombing
  • Acorns & Oak Trees
  • Fire-Hardened Arrows

Note: In this post, Fire-Hardened Arrows were mistakenly listed under the Paid update for TALES, however, we have adjusted the lists to accurately reflect the content listed on the Expansion Pass Roadmap.

We’ll share more details about each of the features going into Part Two as we get closer to release. If you’d like to review our plans for TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY, please review the Roadmap. If you’d like to see what is included in Part One, check out the launch video here.

Windows – Upcoming Hotfix

We continue to work toward resolving a number of issues on Windows, including:

  • A couple of issues causing an infinite loading screen or failure to progress past the disclaimer screen after launching the game.
  • An issue in the Episode Four mission, “Lost Power Workers” that caused the game to hang when entering the trailer.

We appreciate your ongoing patience and support as we work to resolve these concerns, and we will share a date for the Hotfix in the near future as soon as more news is available. For all other technical issues, please reach out via our Support Portal.

Thank you, Survivors, and keep your eyes open for next week’s release of TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY on Mac (on Steam and Epic Game Store)!

We will update this post as soon as we can if proper patch notes are released.

Moss Book 2 Update 1.000.002 Scurries Out for March 1

Developers Polyarc Games have released the Moss Book 2 update 1.000.002 for the PSVR2.

Moss Book 2 Update 1.000.002 Patch Notes | Moss Book 2 March 1 Patch Notes

Size: 320MB

At this time, developers Polyarc Games have yet to release any patch notes or mention what exactly was updated with Moss Book 2. However, Moss (the first game) also got an update today, which was confirmed earlier this week to fix an issue with chapter selection. This update is likely also addressing a similar issue found in the sequel, considering both were released for the PSVR2 the same day.

Should Polyarc Games give us any specific notes, we’ll be sure to update this post as always.

Moss, and Moss: Book 2 is now available on the PlayStation VR2.

About the game:

Moss: Book II is the award-winning sequel to the fan favorite VR game Moss and has secured a spot on multiple essential and must-play lists. Book II is a single-player action-adventure puzzle game from Polyarc tailor-made for VR. It combines classic components of a great game—such as compelling characters, gripping combat, and captivating world exploration—with the exciting opportunities of virtual reality.

Moss: Book II picks up right where the story in Moss left off. Having rescued her uncle Argus, Quill’s adventure continues with the revelation that a winged tyrant is hunting her within the castle where her uncle was held captive. But Quill has a plan of her own, one that could finally end the merciless rule of the Arcane and save the world from a great unmaking.

The journey will be trying—filled with triumph and heartbreak alike—but new allies, old friends, and the very nature of the castle itself can offer help along the way. Yet in the end, it is you alone who can lift Quill up to save this world, and together, rise to legend.

Moss Update 1.000.003 Squeaks Out March 1 for PSVR2

Developers Polyarc Games have released the Moss Update 1.000.003 for the PSVR2, addressing an issue with chapter selection.

Moss Update 1.000.003 Patch Notes | Moss March 1 Patch Notes

Size: 276MB

While Polyarc Games have yet to release full patch notes, we do know that this update is related to a bug that they confirmed would be fixed this week. That bug is one related to chapter selection, where players who completed the game could no longer select which chapter to play on.

A small but quick fix, thankfully. For those wanting to go back to a chapter and mop up some of the remaining trophies, it seems you should now be able to do that.

Moss and Moss: Book II are now available for the PSVR2.
