Wild Hearts – Nodachi Weapon Guide

It wouldn’t be a monster hunter game without a huge sword, and Wild Hearts’ very own nodachi weapon definitely fits the bill. While the nodachi is a little slower than other weapons, it offers surprisingly good mobility compared to Monster Hunter’s greatsword. With well-timed dodges, careful movement, and a bit of luck, you can dish out tons of damage without having to wait for the boss to fall over. In this Wild Hearts nodachi weapon guide, we’ll delve into the ins and outs of this giant blade.

Do note that as with every weapon, you unlock more moves as you progress through the story. As this can be a bit of a spoiler to some, we’ll only cover the karakuri moves that you can pull off via the crate and the spring, which you gain access to fairly early on in the game.

Wild Hearts Nodachi Weapon Guide

Overview

The nodachi is a large, single-edged sword that excels at dealing large amounts of damage with few hits. Its signature move, Bisection, deals massive damage to kemono, but requires you to build up the weapon gauge by charging it. This results in a playstyle that’s more focused around maximizing your gauge while avoiding kemono attacks before unleashing the fully-charged slash in one fell swoop.

What makes the nodachi a surprisingly easy weapon to get into is the fact that you can move and even attack while charging. Charging takes up stamina, however, so you’ll need to be watchful of your stamina bar while using this weapon.

Square Attacks  – Downward Slashes

Pressing the Square button executes downward slashes. These three attacks deal increasing damage, with the third and final slash dealing the most. They’re basic slashes with not a whole lot of animation time, making it ideal for small amounts of damage here or there. Alternatively, it can be used to charge your nodachi, as we’ll see later.

Triangle Attacks  – Roll/Receding Slashes

Unlike the Square button, the Triangle button doesn’t execute a combo. Instead, it causes your character to do either a roll slash or a receding slash, depending on whether you’re moving or not. The roll slash is executed by pressing Triangle + moving in any direction, causing you to move in that specific direction.

On the other hand, if you don’t move at all, you will instead execute the receding slash, which causes your character to move backward while dealing damage. It’s great for dealing damage while avoiding attacks, but the distance you cover isn’t huge, so keep that in mind.

R2 – Iai Stance

Holding down R2 causes your character to enter an iai stance, where the nodachi is sheathed. Holding R2 while in the stance builds your weapon gauge, and releasing it executes one of three attacks: Lighting Slash, Whirling Blade, or Bisection. These attacks scale in power, with Lightning Slash dealing the least damage and Bisection dealing the most. You can tell when the resulting attack is “upgraded” while charging when you see the visual indicator or hear the associated sound effect.

Aside from Bisection dealing the most damage, it also creates a massive shockwave that deals damage in an area. The shockwave does less damage than the slash itself but does give you more range, so you may still tag the kemono with it even if it moved during the downswing.

The downward slash is also longer than it seems, and you can clip the kemono with it even if it looks like it’s just out of range, so don’t be afraid to let go of R2 if you’re running out of stamina.

Note that regardless of stance, holding R2 will drain stamina, and once you run out, the charge will whiff and you’ll be animation locked briefly. You’ll also lose the gauge entirely upon being hit or interrupted by a kemono.

When you hold R2, you will first enter the Planted Iai Stance, which causes your character to stand still and charge the nodachi. This offers fast weapon gauge buildup at the cost of standing still, which can leave you vulnerable to kemono attacks.

Moving or dodging while charging your nodachi makes you enter the Full Moon Iai Stance instead. This is great for repositioning or dodging attacks at the last second, but the weapon gauge buildup is slower in this stance. You can return to the Planted Iai Stance by stopping all movement and standing still.

One other way to build up your weapon gauge is by executing Square or Triangle attacks. Successfully landing attacks will build up the gauge quickly, and you can fill the gauge almost completely with a 3-hit Square combo. You need to ensure that the attacks land, however, as you won’t build up the gauge if you miss the attack.

Effective use of the Iai stance revolves around standing still when possible and moving at the last second to dodge kemono attacks. While you won’t get a lot of openings to attack while charging, they’re great for quickly filling up the gauge after knocking the kemono prone.

Karakuri Moves

The nodachi has special moves when attacking from a crate or a spring. The crate-based attack executes a plunge that does lots of damage, and you can even use it to fill your weapon gauge if you were holding R2 before jumping onto the crates.

The spring-based attack executes a horizontal leap that cleaves in a wide area around you. It covers a lot of distance, however, so you may miss your mark if you’re too close to the kemono before leaping.

Finally, if you hold R2 before leaping onto a spring, you can let go of it to execute “Soaring Slash Streak,” a chain of two horizontal cleaves. These attacks don’t do as much damage as Bisection but can be executed without the long animation, so it’s worth using if you want to close the gap and you’re fully charged.

Because you can charge your weapon gauge while executing these attacks, they’re all fairly handy, though you’ll need to have the karakuri built beforehand as you can’t build and charge at the same time.

In Action

The nodachi’s playstyle revolves around charging your weapon gauge and unleashing Bisection as much as possible. You can be aggressive by using Square and Triangle attacks while charging with R2, but you need to ensure you don’t get interrupted by attacks, screams, and the like. Timing is important with the nodachi as you’ll want to roll away at the last second to maximize charge time.

You can take advantage of the kemono’s wind-up animations to charge your nodachi uncontested. For example, if you notice the kemono ready to charge at you, simply put down crates to block its assault and charge from behind. Once the kemono headbutts onto the crates, jump above or move around the karakuri and release R2 for sweet, sweet damage.

Though a bit slower than other weapons in Wild Hearts, the nodachi offers good damage while still leaving room for mobility. It’s definitely not as difficult as it seems, and with enough practice, you’ll be bisecting kemono like butter in no time.

Apex Legends Update 1.000.031 Fires Out for Season 16 This Feb. 14

Apex Legends update 1.000.031 has been released on all platforms, and this is for Season 16 “Revelry.” Players can expect a new TDM mode to be part of the update, as well as a new weapon, classes and more! Check down below for the new Apex Legends update patch notes.

Apex Legends Revelry Patch Notes and Battle Pass Trailer:

REMASTERED LEGEND CLASSES

In Revelry, Legends have been reorganized on the Legends Screen according to their Class. You’ll be able to see their associated Class perk on top of that Legend’s unique abilities.

This reorganization will help players identify Legends that play or support the team in a similar manner, and help them understand the new roles easier. There will be 5 Classes:

  • Assault
  • Recon
  • Skirmisher
  • Controller
  • Support

CLASS PERKS

Every Legend Class also now has an associated gameplay perk that grants the Legends of that class access to new strategic options in the game.

At casual levels of play, these new gameplay benefits will be fun new bonuses to engage with and empower decision-making.

At higher levels of play, a squad make-up now determines what gameplay elements the team will have access to, and what they’re leaving behind.

TEAM DEATHMATCH, PERMANENT LIMITED-TIME MODE ROTATIONS

At the launch of Revelry, we’ll be debuting Team Deathmatch to the Apex Games –  a no holds barred brawl between two teams of six – which will be available for the first three weeks of the season. This has been our most requested mode, and we’re excited for players to check in out.

In Team Deathmatch players will be able to select their Legend and weapon loadouts, similar to Control, with respawns occurring automatically after death. The first team to score 30 kills wins the round, and the first team to win two rounds wins the match. Loadouts will shuffle in between rounds, and you can always swap between them and your selected legend while waiting to respawn after death. Make sure to keep an eye out for periodic airdrops throughout the map which come loaded with Care Package and gold-kitted weapons.

MIXTAPE PLAYLIST

Following the first three weeks of Team Deathmatch, we’re thrilled to introduce a brand new way to enjoy some of our more highly requested LTMs on a permanent rotation with our Mixtape Playlist. This new mode queue provides players with the opportunity to jump right into frenetic and engaging combat experiences between our quick respawn modes: Control, Team Deathmatch, and Gun Run. These modes give ample opportunity to experiment and practice with weapons and Legends outside of our core BR experience, with little downtime between fights and respawns.

Apex Legends Update 2.17 Flies Out for Revelry This Feb. 14

Respawn has released Apex Legends update 2.17, and this is for Season 16 titled “Revelry.” While there’s no new legend, players can expect the introduction of TDM, a new weapon and classes! Read on for everything new in the Apex Legends Feb. 14 patch notes.

Apex Legends Update 2.17 Patch Notes | Apex Legends Feb. 14 Patch Notes:

Size: 43GB (PS4)

God of War Ragnarok: Kratos Was Supposed to Die in Early Story Concept

God of War Ragnarok‘s Kratos story was originally set to be much darker, as revealed by narrative director Matt Sophos in a new interview. An early concept featured the Greek God of War’s death in the game’s first Thor fight, with Atreus pulling Kratos out of Helheim two decades later and resurrecting him.

Four-and-a-half years after the release of God of War 2018, God of War Ragnarok continued the series’ Norse saga to massive fanfare and critical acclaim. Without going into spoiler territory, Ragnarok tells a moving, positive story of compassion and redemption, but apparently that was not always the direction planned for the game.

Discussing the writing process of God of War Ragnarok and its complex themes, narrative director Matt Sophos revealed that an early concept revolved around Kratos’ death early on in the game, in line with the mural seen at the end of God of War 2018:

There was the earliest, earlier draft of an outline that we did come up with, that we took to Eric (Williams). We had Kratos die in the Thor fight at the very beginning of the game. It wasn’t a permanent death: what was gonna happen was [that] he would get pulled out of Hel[heim], essentially, by Atreus, but [at this point] 20 years have passed. There was gonna be a big time jump-type thing. […] It didn’t ultimately feel right. Eric was like, “I don’t wanna do that. Kratos has died and come back from it too many times […] The hook, the emotion isn’t really there.” And he was absolutely right; that’s why [that concept] didn’t last very long.

Sophos then explained the heartwarming reason why Kratos did get a happy ending in the game:

As we were developing the story, we knew that we wanted the story to be one about letting go and changing. […] Norse mythology is all about fate and prophecy and everything, and we wanted to say that that’s bullsh*t. Nothing is written that can’t be unwritten. As long as you’re willing to change [and] make changes in your life, you’re not bound to fate. When we landed on that, when we knew that that was the story we wanted to tell, we knew that Kratos couldn’t die. Because then it would be like, “Woah, are we gonna just say that Kratos couldn’t change?” And then that would suck. It became pretty clear to us early that [Kratos] can’t die if we want to tell the story we want to tell.

And so, the beloved father-son duo of Kratos and Atreus embarked on a challenging yet ultimately positive journey in God of War Ragnarok. Would you have liked to see the darker story idea materialize instead? Let us know in the comments below.

Hogwarts Legacy Multiplayer Mod “HogWarp” Being Developed by Skyrim Together Team

Less than a week into the game’s launch, the Skyrim Together team is developing a Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer mod titled “HogWarp” that will let up to eight people enjoy the Hogwarts RPG experience together. Even more impressively, the team has already developed early builds of the mod that are exclusive to Patreon supporters.

Check out a few seconds of alpha HogWarp-enabled gameplay shared by the team:

Avalanche Software’s Wizarding World RPG Hogwarts Legacy was released on February 10, and immediately enjoyed immense popularity. The game broke Twitch viewership records for single-player games and came in at second place for highest concurrent player count in the same genre on Steam.

Still, the game’s lack of multiplayer is a significant omission in a world dominated by multiplayer FPS and sports games. The team behind the Skyrim Together multiplayer mod for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is seeking to rectify that with their multiplayer mod “HogWarp.” Four days into the game’s full release, HogWarp already has live test builds that fans can check out via the Together Team’s “Grown Otter” Patreon tier ($10.50/€10 monthly) or higher.

The primary creator of the mod, Yamashi, says that the mod will tentatively allow up to eight players to play together, and does not intend to “create any multiplayer-specific content.” Instead, the focus of the mod is “co-op and roleplay,” and the team is currently figuring out “how to do the basics such as spawning characters with the player’s appearance, animations and NPCs.” While a fully-functioning version of the mod is still “months away” at least, Yamashi is planning on publicly releasing a proof-on-concept later this month.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. If you’re planning on picking up the game, be sure to check out our review first (where we found the game “a genuine, authentic [Wizarding World] experience like no other”) as well as our plethora of Hogwarts Legacy guides that should streamline your Hogwarts adventure.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers Season 2 Goes Live Feb. 16, With New Great Ape Vegeta Raider & More

Dimps and Bandai Namco Entertainment have released a Dragon Ball: The Breakers Season 2 trailer, showcasing the new playable Raider Great Ape Vegeta and his devastating Ki Blasts. Season 2 will go live on February 16, 2023, with three new Survivor skins and a new map being added to the game in the new Season as well.

Watch the Dragon Ball: The Breakers Season 2 trailer below:

The Great Ape Vegeta Raider starts the game off as base Saiyan Vegeta and transforms into his Great Ape form over the course of the match. Great Ape Vegeta is a terrifying, colossal Raider with incredibly powerful AOE destructive abilities and Ki Blasts. To have a fighting chance against him, Survivors must make use of key Transpheres or secure Shenron’s seven Dragon Balls to morph into the ultimate version of their Transpheres for the rest of the game.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is available now on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you’re thinking about picking it up now, be sure to check our review of the game first, where we found it “certainly an interesting concept for a Dragon Ball game, if not a great one.”
