Microsoft Details Xbox One March System Update, Rolling Out Today

Microsoft is launching a brand new Xbox One system update today that looks to improve a number of features with some of the biggest tweaks coming to the console’s Friends and Party functions.

The update also prepares the platform for Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming shooter, Titanfall.

“I’m excited to share that our second, and most significant, system update for Xbox One is starting to roll out today and includes improved matchmaking, party chat and friends features that will make gaming on Xbox One an experience like no other,” chief product officer Marc Whitten said in the latest Xbox Wire update.

Before checking out the video presentation above and reading up on the full details below, Whitten also outlined a few of the company’s upcoming goals, mentioning another future update to come.

“We know external hard drive storage is another big one on your list. It’s on our list too,” he said. “We’re working on that for a future update and will keep you posted. We’re also working on friends notification improvements and experimenting with how to make that better.”

For now, check out the full update notes below, as listed by Mr. Whitten.

Xbox One March System Update

Get to your friends list faster. – The friends list is now front and center on the homepage of the Friends app. Click the Social tile on Home, or say “Xbox, go to Friends” to see who’s online and what they’re up to. From there you can quickly send messages and get into a party.

Party chat on by default. – When you party up, chat audio is turned on by default.

Chat with friends playing different games. – Party chat is now separated from people playing your game, so you can chat with your friends who are online or you can chat with everyone playing the game.

“Invite friends to game” option available in your multiplayer titles. – Similar to Xbox 360 titles, when you’re inside a game’s menu you have a simpler and quicker way to set up your multiplayer battles. Selecting “Invite friends” lets you invite friends to your game and party.

See a list of “Recent Players.” – This is a simple list that shows you Xbox Live members you’ve recently played with, making it easier to stay in touch with people, add new friends after your multiplayer sessions, or report a player for bad behavior.

Twitch live streaming support. – The best broadcasting and spectating experience on any game console is on its way to Xbox One with the new Twitch app launching on March 11, just say “Xbox broadcast” to start sharing.  Xbox One is the only next-gen console that allows you to archive your Twitch broadcasts and view live Twitch streams regardless of their original source.

Dolby Digital sound. – Optical out now supports 5.1 Dolby Digital, enabling devices such as sound bars and headsets with only optical in to be able to receive 5.1 Dolby Digital from Xbox One over optical. We’re also adding support for Dolby Digital surround sound over HDMI. Now you’ll be able to have the best sound quality no matter what speaker setup you are using.

We will now support 50Hz output to Xbox One. – You can set the live TV app to display at 50Hz for full or fill modes, fixing the frame rate issues some users in Europe have been experiencing while watching live TV on Xbox One.

Volume up/down adjustments. – We’re making it easier to adjust the volume on your Xbox One. Now, you can tailor the number of volume increments when using “Xbox volume up” or “Xbox volume down” voice commands.

New ways to stay connected with SmartGlass. – We’re introducing new ways for you to stay connected with your friends through Xbox One SmartGlass. Receive notifications of Xbox Live messages, check out what your friends are doing, and see their latest highlight clips. You can even unsnap apps with the tap of a finger – all from your personal device.

Support for new Xbox One accessories. – Xbox One now supports the recently announced Xbox One Stereo Headset and Adapter, the Xbox One Media Remote with a dedicated OneGuide button, as well as third party headsets.

Browser improvements. – When you’re searching for content, there’s now a direct link to IE to see related results on the web. New gesture and controller features let you directly zoom and pan Bing and Google maps.  And search is even faster in IE – just highlight a phrase on a web page and press the menu button to search Bing and learn more.

IR blasting of power and volume to TVs/AVRs is now available in all regions.

Easy sound bar setup. – Your audio sound bar set up just got a lot easier. You no longer need to type in the model number for most sound bars or AVRs when setting up TV on Xbox One.

General improvements. – Last, but not least, a few miscellaneous updates like the ability to view Game Clips while in Snap mode and a new passkey feature to protect user settings.

Titanfall – Respawn CEO on Xbox 360 Version, Recent Leaks, Season Pass, and More

In a recent interview, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella laid down a lot of info on the studio’s fast-approaching sci-fi shooter, Titanfall, including details on the Xbox 360 version of the game, Titanfall’s season pass, and why there’s no single player.

He also touched on some of the recent leaks that you might have seen right here, including images of the game’s multiplayer maps, and the newly unveiled Pilot Hunter mode, among many other things.

While Zampella says he hasn’t seen many of these leaks, he admits that sometimes you just have to let it go. “I haven’t read it all so I can’t say if some of it’s incorrect or not, but, I mean, at some point you just have to throw up your arms and say, ‘alright, you got us’,” he said. “It is what it is. It’s out there.”

Humerously, when asked what he would do with a Titan if he had one for a day, Zampella answered that he would “step on the guy” that leaked all their info.

Moving on, a small point of controversy surrounding Titanfall is its lack of any single player content. According to Zampella, it’s “about looking at where people spend most of their time.”

“Generally, people burn through a single player campaign as fast as they can, you spend 5-6 hours, and 80% of the work goes into that. And then you go and spend 100 hours in this thing that gets bare bones – it’s the minimum you can get away with,” he continued. “For us, it was about pushing the boundaries of what multiplayer is. So let’s take all that great single player stuff, build up the world – that world that you’re going to spend a hundred hours in should be the most full-featured.”

While it’s confirmed that DLC for the game is indeed in the works, curious fans have long wondered if the studio would offer a season pass as a way to discount the entire bundle.

“We plan to do DLC to support the game,” Zampella explained. “We’re going to do paid DLC. We’re also going to do free updates. We’re going to add in – there’s things that we want in the game that we didn’t get to ship in the final game, so we’ll add private matches and things like that for free. We’re going to do a season pass just because if you buy it up front, you get a deal. We’re not doing micro-transactions. So, you know, a season pass is just, buy it up front and get a better price.”

So, there you have it. Titanfall will have a season pass. Keep your eyes open for more announcements on that later.

Zampella also touched on the highly secretive Xbox 360 version of Titanfall in development at Bluepoint Games.

Though he admitted he wasn’t the best person to speak to this, he stated that their hope is to get both versions as similar as possible when it comes to features.

“That’s the goal,” he said. “I mean the game’s obviously not done yet. [Bluepoint Games is] doing a port of our game. We just started our day on patch, so they now have to take that and integrate it into their game. So, they’re naturally lagging behind us. The goal is to get it as close as possible. Obviously it won’t be exact. It’s on a less powerful system.

When asked if continued support for both titles would be equal, Zampella answered, “we’ll have to sit down with EA and talk about that, but my assumption is yes.”

Lastly, on the topic of a sequel, Zampella couldn’t confirm the studio’s intent on creating a series or franchise out of Titanfall, but he did mention that he “could see a sequel working, absolutely.”

Check out the entire interview over at GameSpot.

Thanks, Aaron Kenney, for the tip!

PvZ: Garden Warfare To Receive Higher Level Cap Alongside First DLC, Mixed Mode Now Live

With the recent release of PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the team is already hard at work with post-launch content.

This is according to a recent tweet from the development team who teases that they’ve received a sneak peek of the first add-on content for Garden Warfare and that it’ll be “amazingly hilarious”.

As we reported earlier, those who purchased Garden Warfare can expect to see all DLC for the game to be free of cost, according to franchise marketing director, Gary Clay.

When the first add-on content for Garden Warfare does arrive, additional content won’t be the only thing it’ll introduce, as you’ll also be greeted with a new level cap, increasing it to beyond 80.

Additionally, as of today, a new “Mixed Mode” playlist is now available which combines Garden And Graveyards and Team Vanquish into one playlist. There are also two new sticker packs available for 20,000 coins each; the Incredi-Plant Pack, containing new items for Plants, and the Vengeful Zomboss Pack, containing new items Zombies.

Looking forward to additional in-game content? How are you enjoying PvZ: Garden Warfare so far?

New Call of Duty: Ghosts Game Update and Personalization Packs Available

A 2.1 GB game update is now available for the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Patch notes are not yet available [EDIT: see update at bottom of post], but we do know that it introduces new personalization packs to the in-game marketplace, including skins for Makarov, Rorke, Zakhaev, and the Hazmat man. The same applies to the Xbox 360 version of the game as well. You can catch the details on these items right here.

Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 11.50.00 AM

In addition, the update introduces the Free Fall dynamic bonus map to all playlists, now free to download for all Xbox Live members.

From what we can see, it has also entirely revamped Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Operations, making each Operation accessible at any time. You can, however, still highlight the Operations you want to keep track of more easily.

Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 11.49.13 AM

As an unfortunate side effect, however, reports are coming in that the Maniac Juggernaut Killstreak in the Assault Package has been severely bugged. It now carries an SC-2010 assault rifle, instead of wielding its default Combat Knife. It’s more than likely that Infinity Ward is currently looking into a fix for the bug.

UPDATE: According to Infinity Ward on Twitter, the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts now supports LAN play.

As a couple of side notes, four new personalization packs are also available on the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 marketplace:

Report – Driveclub Release Date Revealed?

Originally planned to launch alongside the PlayStation 4, Driveclub may now finally have its long awaited release date.

User 100mph of PSNation, reported seeing an official Tweet from the Driveclub Twitter handle, saying that the game would release on “9.4.14”.

driveclubleak_zps185b1f3c

The Tweet, however, has since been removed and the studio now puts the game at an “Early 2014” release date. “Exact date is still TBC,” it says.

It’s important to take note that Driveclub is being developed by Evolution, whom are based in Europe. This could potentially mean, if the leak is correct, the game will be releasing next month. This wouldn’t be surprising either, as Sony’s very own CEO reported in an interview with Variety that he currently enjoys playing games like Driveclub on his PlayStation.

Driveclub was first announced last year as “team-based” racing game coming to the PlayStation 4.

Rumor – First PlanetSide 2 PlayStation 4 Gameplay [Off Screen] [Updated]

Update

It’s been pointed out that the camera man was recording PlanetSide 2 gameplay footage being played back by PlayStation 4’s web browser and not from the actual disk drive. The video is, therefore, unquestionably fake.

Original Story

Above is what appears to be some of the first footage of the PlayStation 4 version of Sony Online Entertainment’s large-scale free-to-play FPS, PlanetSide 2.

The user clearly shows a working PlayStation 4 console and even demonstrates the consoles’s user interface. It’s unclear how the copy was attained, however.

Last we heard, PlanetSide 2 will launch on the PlayStation 4 as a free-to-play shooter in the first half of 2014.

Insider Leaks “Modern Warfare 4” Gameplay Details to YouTube Personality

New details on Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty 2014 surface via leaked insider details.

Allegedly, “somebody inside the Call of Duty machine” showed a “variety of media files” to Call of Duty YouTube personality Drift0r who has relayed that information in the video above.

Drift0r, the same personality who leaked Call of Duty: Ghosts’ initial details last year, was able to confirm with us that the information he received looks legitimate enough to be believed, though, as with all rumors, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

According to his info, Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty will be another entry in the Modern Warfare series, though it may not necessarily be “Modern Warfare 4”. The game also appears to be set in the future while sporting noticeably improved visuals.

The map Drift0r previewed appeared to be “some sort of power plant” or a structure high above a major metropolitan area that that featured multiple-stories and possibly elevators.

Check out the video and be sure to leave your thoughts below. Keep your sights on MP1st for more on Call of Duty 2014!

Blizzard is shifting into a “very early Alpha testing stage” of the studio’s upcoming multiplayer online battle arena title, Heroes of the Storm for Mac and PC.

According to a recent update, Blizzard is gearing up to invite a very limited number of players to a “Technical Alpha” in order to test the game’s infrastructure and technology. The studio will “kick off this initial Tech Alpha phase with a very limited number of participants and continue to expand the pool of invited players as our testing needs evolve and grow over time.”

The test is “intended to help us better examine how our infrastructure and tech will function across a much broader spectrum of machines and connection types,” writes the studio. “What’s more, inviting external Alpha testers will allow us to take a closer look at our hardware needs so that we can be absolutely sure we’re able to support the entire Heroes population as the community grows.”

Currently, the only way to get an invite is via direct email from Blizzard, but you’ll have the best chances by opting in to testing through Battle.net’s Beta Profile page. It’s also currently only open to US residents and it’s not clear when testing might open up to the rest of the world.

Battlefield 4 – DICE Outlines Incoming Improvements to “Netcode”

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has a number of network updates in the works as the studio hopes to improve the game’s “netcode”.

Earlier, we learned the team was investigating possible improvements via test servers and it looks like some of the results are now coming in. In a recent blog update, DICE representative “SlyOkapi” listed a handful of items the team is either currently fixing or investigating.

In addition, Okapi listed a number of fixes that are currently in place, mentioning that improvements to hit impact sounds “went live for PC on February 13, and will be included in the next update for all the other platforms. The cooldown time for letting bullet hits trigger the sound has been decreased considerably, so players will now hear every bullet that hits them.” Furthermore, a “fix for issues when the [headshot icon] was triggered by deaths not related to headshots is now live,” Okapi says. You can check out the full list of implemented fixes by following this link.

Now, onto some of the incoming “netcode” improvements, as seen on the official Battlefield blog:

Rubber banding

We have made several server optimizations that have decreased rubber banding for some players. To further address the issue, there are upcoming fixes for packet loss and a customize screen bug, both connected to the rubber banding issue. Furthermore, we will continue to collect data to pinpoint exactly when and why rubber banding is occurring.

Kill camera delay / Player death sync

On some occasions, the kill camera would trigger before the game client displayed the last portion of damage being dealt, giving players the impression that they died too early. There were also issues with blood effects, damage indicators, and the health bar in the HUD being out of sync. A fix for this will be included in the next game update.

Tickrate

Players have been asking whether the tickrate – how often the server will update the game world – in Battlefield 4 will be higher in the future. Though we haven’t got any immediate plans to increase the tickrate at this moment, we are exploring the possibilities of raising the tickrate on specific servers.

No registered damage

We are aware of the bug where players have been firing at their opponent and not doing damage. In the February 13 game update for PC, we added a piece of code that enables us to specifically track instances where this would occur. We are currently looking at when this issue is triggered, and what causes it. The data that we receive will help us to further improve the firefights in the future.

Instant death while sprinting

At certain occasions while walking or sprinting, a player could get catapulted at high speed which would cause death if any object was standing in the way. This was caused by a mathematical error in the character physics code, and we have a fix prepared for an upcoming patch.

Various Items

In addition to these items, there are also fixes coming for issues with Levolution being out of sync, shots appearing to be fired in the wrong direction, and vehicles outside the infantry area not taking damage when fired at. Also, we have introduced new in-game icons that will help you, and us, to troubleshoot network related problems that could cause an inconsistent multiplayer experience.

Network Troubleshooting Icons

With the January 30-31 game updates, we’ve introduced two new icons to the Battlefield 4 HUD (head-up display). These were added to the game as a way for us, and the players, to more easily troubleshoot common network-related issues that may have negative effects on the multiplayer experience.

Connection_HighLatency_64x64

The first icon, seen at the top in the shape of a clock, indicates that your connection to the server is lagging. There can be several reasons for this. For example, it could mean that someone else is using your connection while you are playing, but it could also mean that there is a network problem that occurred somewhere between you and the server. The effect of such lag is that it will take a bit longer for you to see what is happening in the game world. If this icon is frequently blinking, you might want to try a different server or see if you can decrease the load on your Internet connection.

Connection_PacketLoss_64x64

The second icon, at the bottom, shows four squares that indicate packet loss. When you see this icon, your connection to the server is experiencing lost packets, which means that information is failing to reach its destination, either when your game client sends it to the server or when the server sends the information to you. Please keep in mind that packets always get lost on the Internet and that you should not be alarmed if you’re seeing this icon blinking once or twice. If you have a large amount of packet loss and see the icon often, you will probably experience game “hiccups” sometimes – action will stop for a moment, then speed ahead to catch up.

Okapi closes off, saying, “we want to assure you that we are constantly investigating, or already in the process of updating, all these items and several more that you’ve had concerns with – and that we will continue to do so with your help.”

Hopefully, the upcoming fixes will result in an improved Battlefield 4 experience.

Warframe PS4 Update Introduces New Warframe, Weapons, and Mode

A recent Warframe update on the PlayStation 4 introduces new content like the Zephyr Warframe, new weapons, a new in-game HUD, and the new game mode, Interception.

“For Update 12, we really wanted to introduce a Warframe like no other, and we believe we accomplished that with Zephyr, the air-based Warframe,” writes Digital Extremes associate producer Pat Kudirka in the latest PS Blog update. “Lighter than all other Warframes, Zephyr uses this to her advantage to increase her mobility, but also to complement her vicious attacks.”

The studio also introduced new HUD that Kudirka says is less obtrusive, contains more information, and offers a number of customization options to tweak.

In the new capture-based game mode Interception, “four areas are highlighted on the map that players or enemies can control,” Kudirka says. “Staying in proximity to the capture point keeps control of areas, but watch out for the Grineer, as they can capture a point by simply hacking nearby consoles. Holding a capture point accumulates points for your total score. Whichever team reaches the max score first wins the round, and then you simply need to clear the area of remaining Grineer to complete the mission.”

“The more points you hold, the faster your score goes up. When the round’s over, the score is reset and players have the option to claim their reward and quit, or continue to fight on for a bigger reward similar to Defense mode.”

The update also expanded the “beautiful forest level set teased in Update 11.5” across all Earth nodes.

So, Warframe fans, get the update and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
