Turtle Beach Limited Edition Spectre Headset Review

Another year, another iteration of Call of Duty, another line of headsets from a respected brand in conjunction with the most popular console video game on the planet. Following suit from previous years dating back to Modern Warfare 3, Turtle Beach and the teams at Activision and Infinity Ward got together to create a new headset with the Call of Duty: Ghosts branding. With three different headsets at different price ranges in total to fit your budget; the Shadow at $99 USD, Spectre at $199 USD, and the Phantom at $299 USD respectively, I dive into the mid-ranged Spectre edition to see if it’s worth your hard earned dollars.

This headset is quite the beauty, with Call of Duty branding above both ear cups.

This headset is quite the beauty, with Call of Duty branding above both ear cups.

The Cosmetics

The first thing I noticed after unboxing the headset, aside from the gorgeous and sturdy box it’s sold in, is how beautiful the headset looked. I’m usually against game branded headsets, specifically because games always die out and are replaced with newer versions quicker than ever before. Nobody wants to be wearing a Modern Warfare 2 headset while playing Ghosts, it just looks unattractive, outdated and tacky. However, Turtle Beach pulled off the impossible, they branded Call of Duty without making it obnoxiously obvious. Besides the Call of Duty branding above the headset speakers on the band, the speaker tags are actually removable. So if you don’t like the sexy, glossy Ghosts image that the headset tags comes with, you can swap them out for something else more to your liking. 4/5 stars for cosmetics.

Comfort

Now, let’s talk about arguably the most important part of a great gaming headset, and that’s comfort. How do the headset cushions feel? How long can you last before needing to take a break with them off? Are they compatible with gaming glasses? Well, I’ll tackle each of those questions individually, and I have some good news. The headset ear memory foam cushions feel absolutely wonderful on your ears, and the headset itself doesn’t weigh much at all. It doesn’t constrict your head, but it’s placed on quite tightly. I even wore my Gunnar’s while playing and didn’t once feel the need to take my headset off, even after hitting the two hour mark. I wouldn’t say these are more comfortable than the Astro A40’s, but they are definitely high quality and not to be taken as a joke. Need to take a rest? The Spectre’s include a twist-cup design that fit comfortably around the neck, so you can chill without losing them. The Spectre’s showed up the party in the comfort category. 4/5 stars for comfort.

Sound Quality

Sound quality is key to gaining a competitive edge. In Call of Duty, the ability to clearly hear footsteps is crucial to getting the drop on your opponent. Knowing where they are before you see them can land you a pretty nice score at the end of a match, and the Spectre’s provide very accurate sounds in this regard. Hear a grenade go off on your six? You’ll be able to tell exactly where it blew up at without even seeing it. The included in-line amp includes features such as adjustable treble and bass controls to add a depth of realism. Fear that your mic is too loud? There’s an option for that as well, with two different mic levels. There’s also even separated game and chat controls, so you can adjust those accordingly to get the perfect sound for you. The 50mm drivers in the Spectre’s provide the utmost perfect noise isolation, which may be my favorite sound feature of this particular headset.

I compared the Spectre’s to my Astro A40’s and found the Spectre’s picked up more sounds in a game like Call of Duty, while sounding better all at the same time. I was blown away by the sound quality. I was not expecting anything to rival the Astro A40’s, as Astro has seemingly dominated for quite some time with competitive players across the world. I found myself getting crisp, clean and precise sounds that I wasn’t experiencing with any other headset while playing Call of Duty before. This is where the Spectre shines and I can’t say they let me down in any sort of situation during my long gaming session with them. 5/5 stars for sound quality.

Pictured above is the included in-line amp, with various control options at your disposal.

Pictured above is the included in-line amp, with various control options at your disposal.

Setting Up

This is where I have to get a bit negative. Setting up the Spectre’s requires one too many wires in, my opinion. Call me a noob, but I had to resort to the Quick Start Guide pamphlet to see exactly how to set these things up, and I consider myself quite tech savvy. After finally setting them up, I didn’t want to unplug it in fear of having to put it all back together again. Your breakaway cord attaches to your headset speaker, while you connect an Xbox Live cable from the in-line amp to your controller, while you plug in the breakway cable to your in-line amp, while running another cable for sound to an Xbox audio adapter, which then connects to your Xbox 360. Did you get lost? I hope not. There’s even an extra wire you can add to the in-line amp that connects to your phone, so if your girlfriend calls while you’re gaming you can quickly flip over to a call seamlessly. It’s a nice thought, but I personally didn’t use this feature. 3/5 stars for set up.

The Spectre is compatible with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Mac and PC. You’ll need the latest 1.50 system software firmware for the PlayStation 4 for the Spectre’s to work. The Xbox One’s compatibility is unknown at this point.

Build Quality

I hate buying cheap headsets that feel so flimsy that you’re afraid to break them by being a bit rough with them. So many flood the market yearly that it’s hard to find a good headset not disguised by terrible build quality. The headset might look a bit plastic and cheap from pictures you see scanning the internet, or even this article, but it’s quite the opposite. Holding the Spectre’s in your hand, you get a nice sense of a finely built product. The headband is soft and stitched on. The boom mic is detachable and extremely flexible. The ear cups are made of high quality memory foam, and all the included wires are nice and thick. Overall, this was the category I was a little worried about, but Turtle Beach came correct and built a stable product. As with anything expensive, I don’t condone you toss these around because you’re having a bad gaming night, so take care of your stuff and all will be well. 5/5 stars for build quality.

Pictured above is the boxing art, and an image displaying the removable speaker tags.

Pictured above is the boxing art, and an image displaying the removable speaker tags.

Pricing

You know the old saying, “you get what you pay for”? The saying holds true to the Spectre’s, if you want a tournament quality headset, you need to pay tournament quality prices. If you are a casual gamer who plays games a few times a week when you’re bored, I don’t expect you to shell out $200 for a headset. But for the hardcore, competitive, tournament style gamers out there, you know that buying quality items dent your wallet. The Spectre weighs in at $199.99 USD, and is rightfully priced. You get a great headset with exceptional sound quality, build quality and looks that make a price point as high as $200 necessary. However, I feel if you were to spend that much on a headset, you should probably spend a tad more go with Astro’s, as I feel they are the lead dog when it comes to console headsets and for general gaming purposes. To those that can’t seem to fork over that much dough for a headset, no worries, as there are plenty of quality headsets at cheaper options. But remember, you get what you pay for! 4/5 stars for pricing.

 Final Thoughts & Conclusion

Overall, the Spectre is an extremely solid headset and will rival the lead dogs on the market. I don’t feel they are the best, as I would rate them lower than the Astro brand for general gaming, but you can’t go wrong with picking up a pair. The beauty of swapping out the speaker tags, the multi-platform feature and the build and sound quality alike are all solid in their own regard. Don’t want to spend $250 on a headset, but still want a tournament quality headset? The Spectre is for you. Aside from the setup hassle, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time using the Spectre’s and plan on continuing to use them when I play Call of Duty: Ghosts. Overall, this headset gets 4/5 stars.

This headset was reviewed while playing Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4. A big thank you to Turtle Beach for providing the product.

No word yet on whether or not any hefty updates will be hitting either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

You can catch the full list of patch notes below:

CRASHES & FREEZES

  • Fixed an occasional crash during SP gameplay.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur during level loading.
  • Sometimes the game would attempt to load a model at the same time as it was being thrown out of memory. This has been fixed.
  • Sometimes the game would crash after removing old bullet holes/scratch marks in the world. This has been fixed.
  • Sometimes when a player or enemy was sitting in the jeep gunner entry and got killed, his body would rest on the vehicle in such a way that the physics simulation would require lots of CPU usage. This has been solved.
  • Fixed a crash occurring on Flood Zone when playing Conquest Large.
  • Fixed a common crash relating to surface shaders.
  • Fixed a crash on Test Range that could occur when using sniper rifles.
  • Fixed a common crash that occurred during map transition.

NETWORK PERFORMANCE

  • Eliminated a network sync bug

If you’ve been experiencing situations in multiplayer where it appears that you are taking damage from enemies through walls, you might have been the victim of a network sync bug. In this game update, we have identified and eliminated one such bug that caused this type of gameplay experience. We are continuing to work on more multiplayer optimizations concerning network performance.

Improved Network Smoothing

We have made some improvements to the ”Network Smoothing” functionality that you can find in the OPTIONS>GAMEPLAY menu. The Network Smoothing slider governs a group of settings that aim to produce a tighter multiplayer experience based on your specific packet loss situation.

Removed network lag

In certain specific situations, network lag would be introduced when interacting with objects in the game. This has been experienced by some players during melee combat, when climbing ladders, and when operating stationary weapons. The cause for these specific network lag situations has been solved.

GAMEPLAY BALANCING

  • Removed the scout helicopter at the final base for the defenders in Rush mode on Siege of Shanghai
  • Adjusted a Conquest flag position on Zavod 311 that was obstructing vehicles.
  • At Hainan Resort in Rush mode, defenders were given too much armor at the first base. We have removed the defender IFV at the first base, added an attacker IFV at the first base, and increased the spawn delay on the defender IFV at the third base.
  • Fixed so that there is 1 revive per round Defuse, as opposed to 1 per set.
  • Removed all previously placed C4 and mines after a round of Defuse to eliminate the possibility to affect the next round.

GRAPHICS

  • Fixed a minor graphical error on Operation Locker.
  • Fixed an issue where the in-game Battlelog would get distorted when a Commander launched an EMP attack.

  • Fixed an issue in Defuse where the bomb model sometimes did not display on the bomb carrier.
  • Fixed minor graphical alignment issues in the Spectator Mode camera layout.
  • Fixed an issue in Spectator Mode where the spectator’s view incorrectly would get distorted during an EMP deployment from a Commander.

  • Fixed the issue where pressing B would bring up the console.
  • Fixed an issue where the EMP effect lasted for too long on soldiers.
  • Fixed an issue with an area you couldn’t traverse near one of the M-COM stations in Rush mode on Siege of Shanghai.
  • Fixed an issue relating to player skill levels. -Fixed an issue in Obliteration mode where the bomb would temporarily be placed in the sky after the bomb carrier was killed when swimming or in a water-based vehicle.

The PlayStation 4 Launches Tonight Along With One of Sony’s Biggest Exclusive Being Announced

The day has finally arrived. Starting at midnight tonight, Sony Computer Entertainment’s next-generation console, The PlaySation 4, will be available at retail stores across North America and other regions of the world.

To celebrate this launch, Sony has released a live-action launch trailer and will be holding an pre-launch event where they plan on announcing one of their biggest PlayStation titles yet.

[youtube id=”dOahOBwJuZw” width=”618″ height=”378″]

According to a reddit post, the unannounced game will be related to space and is a “classic” Sony title, so for those expecting a new Uncharted game or something along the lines of God of War, keep guessing.

“Just heard Kevin Pereira on the DeathSquad podcast leak some info regarding one of the big surprises tonight. He said it has to do with bringing back one of the biggest Sony exclusives, and has to do with space…I’m drawing blanks, y’all have any ideas what the announcement could be?”

If we are going to take a guess, it might be Zone of Enders, or Jak and Daxter. Who knows for certain, though.

Be on the look out for our hardware and multiplayer reviews of the PlayStation 4 launch titles some time after launch.

Battlefield 4 – Footage Of China Rising DLC Weapons And Gadgets Arises, New Server Update Incoming

With the release of Battlefield 4‘s latest update on the PC, some users have seemingly managed to get their hands on some of the content to be included in the upcoming China Rising expansion.

Two videos below capturing gameplay footage from private servers showcase the new weapons and gadgets that are originally intended to launch with the expansion this December 3 for Battlefield 4 Premium members, two weeks later for non-Premium members.

The new weapons showcased in the videos are none other than the L96A1 sniper rifle, MTAR-21 carbine, MP7 personal defense weapon, RPK-74M light machine gun, and the L85A2 assault rifle, while two new gadgets; the SUAV and the UCAV are also shown off.

Update

New Assignments

Middle King
  • 10 Hours China Rising
  • ???
  • 1 Kill with SUAV

Earlier, we also learned about possible map names for China Rising’s four new multiplayer maps, which you can check out here.

Presumably, a mishap in the recently outed update has unintentionally allowed users to gain access to these new weapons and gadgets. In order to patch things up, as well as to address an increase of reports of server crashes, developers DICE are rolling out Server Update R10 over the next few hours.

“We are seeing a lot of server crashes at the moment,” writes DICE in another Battlelog update. “These are being solved by rolling out a new server patch on PC (Server Update R10). It will take a few hours for this new server version to propagate, but it should be with most servers in a matter of a couple of hours. If you are getting error messages referring to the China Rising expansion pack when trying to join a multiplayer server, please try another server. This error will only appear if a server has not yet updated from server version R9 to R10.”

Rumor – Call of Duty: Ghosts Map Packs To Offer DLC Weapons?

Recent discoveries suggest DLC weaponry will be making its way to Call of Duty: Ghosts this year.

Mining through the game’s PC files, @syncohboyy stumbled on a few lines of code related to what looks like DLC-specific weapon attachment purchases. The files listed entries like “ch_dlcweap02 silencer_purchase” or “ch_dlcweap04 reflex_purchase”, indicating that future downloadable content may include up to a total of four additional weapons; one weapons per map pack.

BY48QywCUAIw-_y

Only a few days ago, a similar discovery was made regarding possible DLC map names.

Previously, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 introduced the idea of adding weaponry in their map packs, though it was only the case for the game’s first map pack, Revolution, which added the Peacekeeper sub-machine gun.

With regards to Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward Executive Producer mentioned earlier that weapon DLC was not possible due to memory limitations, but with the mandatory install required for all versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, it would not be far fetched that developers allowed room for additional downloadable content this time around.

Lastly, with rival shooter Battlefield 4 offering both maps and weapons in their expansions, it would make sense that Call of Duty: Ghosts would want to stay competitive and offer similar content, if not more. But until an official unveiling of any future Ghosts DLC is made, we’ll have to consider this one speculation.

What do you think? Are you down for more weapons in Call of Duty: Ghosts. What sort of weapons would you like to see make an appearance or, perhaps, a return?

Thanks, CharlieINTEL.

We Say Goodbye To The Current Generation of Gaming With Our Favorite Xbox 360 and PS3 Multiplayer Games

It’s been an exciting decade for multiplayer gaming.

While the idea of playing console games with complete strangers in other parts of the world may not have been realized until near the end of the original Xbox and PlayStation 2’s lifecycle, it wasn’t until Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 hit the scene in 2005 and 2006, respectively, that we were fortunate enough to bare witness to the blooming of online multiplayer gaming on consoles in all its unimpeded growth and glory. It really is a beautiful thing, and has since become the phenomenon from which a website like MP1st was born.

We love multiplayer gaming and sitting here anxiously, on the eve of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4’s launch, we’re more than excited to learn what the coming decade has in store. If it isn’t even more of what we already know and love; games like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, or Killzone: Shadow Fall, it’s upcoming titles like Titanfall, DestinyThe Division, Halo 5, or Star Wars: Battlefront that have us fired up for the coming generation.

So, let’s say goodbye to the generation of console multiplayer gaming we currently reside in, if only for a few more days, by recalling some of our most memorable multiplayer experiences of the past decade, and by looking forward at our most anticipated multiplayer gaming experiences to come.

ALEX DI FIORI

3. Minecraft

It goes without saying that the console version of Minecraft is a mere shadow of the PC version, but Minecraft is immensly important in that it essentially proved indie games will sell on consoles. While there were certainly some success stories in the indie scene for console gaming before hand, nothing comes close to Minecraft’s success.

2. Halo 3

A lot of people consider the Halo franchise to have effectivly died after the 3rd title, and for the most part, they’re right. Conceptually, Halo: Reach was just a carbon copy of Halo 3 without the Bungie polish and Halo 4, despite being an excellent game, is a fairly drastic departure from the franchise’s roots. But overall, I think Halo is the reason FPS gaming is what it is today. Much like Minecraft proved indie worked, Halo proved FPS worked outside of the PC world.

1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

While Halo proved that FPS worked on console, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare took it to the next level. While it of course lacked that Sci-Fi polish, it’s real-world grit and fluid gameplay was a rarity on the gaming and console scenes. Granted, better games than Call of Duty 4 have been made, but none of them has totally shifted the focus of consumers so drastically as Call of Duty has and Call of Duty 4 is what started it all.

Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: The Division

There’s something about the concept of an MMO game that always seems to be missing something; scale. Not in the sense of large, but small. MMOs are all about hordes of players battling alongside and against each other. While I’m sure The Division will have plenty of big group firefights, it’s focus on squad mechanics and close-knit teamwork conceptually sets it apart from the standard MMO game like Destiny in a way that’s not only exciting and interesting, but could very well change how people think about MMO design.

THOMAS GREGORIO

3. Gears of War

Back in 2006, the third-person shooter genre wasn’t very popular. Whether it was janky animations or clunky controls, third-person shooters always ran into a litany of issues. Enter Epic Games with Gears of War bringing with it the roadie run, solid netcode for 4v4 play, and an (overly) effective cover mechanic allowing players to easily find cover with a push of a button. These three mechanics, combined with the title’s penchant for extreme violence, led to success in the genre like we had never seen before. My fondest memories were completing the co-op campaign and the tension when trying to survive an Execution match against 3-4 enemies. Two-piece griefing aside, Gears of War was a very tactical and surprisingly deep game that provided countless hours of fun.

2. Castle Crashers

It might seem odd that a XBLA title would be on here, but when you’re discussing the smash-hit Castle Crashers, exceptions can be made. I was a huge fan of the 2D beat’em up genre during the 16-bit era (Streets of Rage, Final Fight, etc.) as well as Behemoth’s previous title Alien Hominid. The old school action fused with a quirky art style and character progression was a perfect mix that resonated with players. Insane mode, in conjunction with the DLC characters and collecting loot, easily warranted multiple playthroughs of the game.

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I haven’t purchased a Call of Duty title since Modern Warfare 2, but there’s no arguing the indelible mark the original Modern Warfare left on the FPS industry. Going toe-to-toe with the Halo franchise and coming out on top is a feat that seemed unimaginable at the time. After playing Overgrown and Crash during the beta (two of my favorite retail maps as well), the notion didn’t seem so far fetched. The introduction of killstreaks, unlocks, and prestige influenced every shooter for the remainder of the console cycle.

Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: Halo 5

Halo’s days of being a system seller are probably behind it, but that doesn’t make me any less excited for the next entry in the franchise. 343 Industries took some big chances in Halo 4 introducing us to the Prometheans, Spartan Ops, and some casual friendly elements such as ordinance drops.  Some of the new multiplayer inclusions were met with resistance, but 343 progressively figured out how to cater to their audience throughout 2013. I feel 343’s growing pains are similar to Treyarch’s when they first began developing Call of Duty titles. Call of Duty 3 and World At War are viewed as low points in the series, but Treyarch is now viewed as the flag bearer of the franchise superseding Infinity Ward in the pecking order. 343 can definitely take that next step with next-gen. Features such as 1080p and 60FPS are already confirmed, but there are other possibilities that have me excited. What does the future of Spartan Ops hold? What improvements will we see to the Forge mode? What will the player count be? I can only hope that a 32-player Rocket Race match awaits me next year.

3. Battlefield 3

Now let’s get this out of the way early; I’m a console gamer, not a PC gamer, so I’m aware I sold myself short for playing console version of Battlefield 3. However, despite its limitations, I still had tons of fun with it. Outside of the Armored Kill expansion, all of the DLC was exciting and on point. Nobody does DLC quite like DICE; giving out weapons, vehicles and maps all in one package. They set the standard for quality DLC, and nobody has yet to match it since. As for the vanilla game itself, what’s not to like? DICE’s sound team is the best in the business, and the visuals are incredible. I was able to rank up to Colonel 45 on three different accounts, so I sunk in tons of game time on Battlefield 3. I’m excited to finally play Battlefield 4 on next-gen consoles, specifically the PlayStation 4, and I’m not quite sure my body is ready for 64 player battles at 60 frames per second. Next-gen, here I come!

2. Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 was the perfect Gears of War title. Had it not been for that damn Sawed-Off shotgun, I probably would of shot this to number one. Gears of War 3 remained true to it’s unique style, while adding things that were desperately missed from earlier iterations in the series; tons of challenges to complete, medals to obtain, characters and skins to unlock. EPIC did a great job at delivering decent DLC as well, mixing in maps and characters, as well as adding dedicated servers, which were extremely needed to destroy the dreaded host advantage that plagued Gears 1 and 2. Phil Spencer recently stated that Gears of War ran its course on the Xbox 360, but I do hope that the team over at EPIC in Raleigh, NC can get together and create a deep, exciting next-gen Gears of War title.

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I would not be surprised if this game was unanimously picked as number one by my fellow editors. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is easily the greatest multiplayer title this gen. A lot of the features that were established in this title became mainstream and widespread and seen in so many titles since; killstreaks, perks, prestige, create-a-class, etc. Now, Call of Duty 4 was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but Call of Duty is no doubt the most popular multiplayer brand out there on consoles and Call of Duty 4, in my eyes, was it’s peak. I will forever remember the nostalgia of long nights on great maps like Crash, Overgrown and District, as well as the combination of the M16 with Stopping Power that was so brutal, everyone used it.

Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: Titanfall

What’s there not to be excited about? The guys that were responsible for Call of Duty 4 being number one on my list are also responsible for the development of Titanfall. I am not a fan that it’s exclusive to the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC, but I will gladly pick up an Xbox One for this title alone. Everything I’ve seen from Titanfall has been exciting and action packed. Crazy giant titans battling with those jet pack guys flying around – I love the chaotic, twitchy atmosphere that Respawn is bringing to life here. Only a few more months until we can all experience this beauty.

3. Battlefield 3

Of course this would make my list. From the stunning visuals to the insane amount of destruction, Battlefield 3 is truly a multiplayer experience you would not have wanted to miss. It has everything a gamer could hope for from a modern day shooter all wrapped up in some amazing and epic gameplay. Battlefield was truly in a league of its own this console generation.

2. Killzone 2

I am extremely hyped for Killzone: Shadow Fall, so it would be wrong to not to include this gem. This is propably the best exclusive first-person-shooter on the PlayStation 3 hands down. The multiplayer was extremely addictive, and it did all the correct things that many other shooters were failing at. It had a fully functional clan system, which also had ways to organize clan battles, eliminating the use of websites and other companion browsers or apps. Guns felt balanced, map design was amongst the best, and graphically speaking, it still holds well against even next-gen titles. It’s a shame the sequel wasn’t on par with it, though hopefully Shadow Fall is.

1. The Last of Us

If you guys haven’t played the multiplayer yet, then you are definitely missing out. I was truly surprise by this one, expecting a complete Uncharted clone, only to learn it is one of the best tactical multiplayer games out there. Everything about the multiplayer is great and even though the PlayStation 4 is launching, I have a feeling I will be playing this game until the guys over at Naughty Dog release a sequel or drop support completely. Despite being a huge fan of the Battlefield and Killzone series, this one steals the cake for best multiplayer this generation for me.

4. Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: The Last of Us 2

I wasn’t joking when I said The Last of Us is probably the best multiplayer game I have ever played. I could go on playing the same old maps on the original one for as long as the game runs, and I’m hoping that a sequel is in the works on the PlayStation 4. Naughty Dog has yet to disappoint me, and I can’t wait to see what they have next in store.

3. Borderlands 2

My third pick is one my personal favorites if I want to kick back and enjoy some mindless co-op with either randoms or my friends. With six different character classes that can be armed with millions of different weapon combinations, Borderlands 2 refreshes itself again and again when finding a couple of items that directly change the way you play. My personal favorite moments: trying your luck on raid bosses with other vault hunters for a chance at some of the most rare and powerful weapons in the game.

2. Battlefield 3

Despite some of the communities’ mixed reactions towards Battlefield 3 and the changes that DICE has made throughout the game’s life cycle, I found myself constantly looking forward to the next time I would get on with my buddies to have another “Battlefield moment”. Since this is Battlefield, after all, it’d be wrong not to mention the team-oriented aspect of it, which played a big roll in choosing this title to be one of my top three choices for this generation’s top multiplayer games. In Battlefield 3, you can never go wrong with whatever class you pick (except maybe the Recon class depending on what level/game mode you’re playing on) because each one plays differently from one another and has uniquely different roles.

1. Call of Duty4 : Modern Warfare

For me, the top current-generation multiplayer game is quite obvious if you’re a fan of shooting games. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare revolutionized multiplayer gaming as it combined fast gameplay with an rpg-esque system ranking system. It also actually rewarded players for doing well in matches by allowing players to call in UAVs, airstrikes and, of course, a chopper to mow down your foes. But most importantly, it got me hooked on to multiplayer gaming once again and was the first title to do so after Halo 2’s launch.

Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: Next-Gen TimeSplitters

Even though there isn’t really a plan for a next-generation version of TimeSplitters, I still remain hopeful that a new one does launch during the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One’s life cycle, as this franchise did something right: It made multiplayer carefree, mindless fun and did not take itself as seriously as most games do these days. Thanks to the games modes it featured and quirky multiplayer characters such as a giant gingerbread man or killer crayons and t-rexes, it made the game not only feel fresh every time I played it, but fun as I got to see unusual creatures and objects fight against each other for survival.

3. Mass Effect 3

It’s a quirky choice, but because BioWare Montreal took my favorite single player series of all time and actually made a really decent multiplayer experience out of it in Mass Effect 3, it made my list. Given the history of great SP games that shipped with poopy MP modes, I was more than a little concerned that BioWare’s recently opened sister studio would be spearheading the multiplayer project. But in the end, it made a lot of sense and it damn well worked. Mass Effect 3, in my eyes, boasts some of the best combat mechanics I’ve ever seen in a third-person shooter while, enemies are unique and challenging. Throwing that mix into a cooperative horde mode/survival multiplayer scenario just seems like a no brainer in hindsight. I look forward to learning what BioWare Montreal cooks up with the next-gen Mass Effect running on the Frostbite 3 engine.

2. Battlefield: Bad Company 2

When one of my best friends’ step-dad – a sign of the series’ more mature audience? – first introduced me to the game back in 2010 during a friendly visit, it hit me pretty hard. Being a tried and true COD-head at the time, I watched, and later played, to finally come to terms with what Battlefield is all about, and it kind of blew my mind. Upon picking it up for my Xbox 360 shortly after my visit, I was hooked. Not only was I introduced to a whole new scale of online warfare, but it was also the first time I truly came to appreciate how outstanding audio design can truly add to the level of immersion in a first-person shooter. Later, the Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s Vietnam DLC added hours upon hours to my time with an already amazing multiplayer experience.

1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Surprise! And to think, I almost passed on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare believing it probably wouldn’t be as good as Halo or Rainbow Six. Realistically, there wouldn’t be an MP1st without Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. There wouldn’t be the annual battle of the FPS giants every Fall that we get so excited about without Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It all started here, and here is where our multiplayer roots will remain.

Most Anticipated Next-Gen Title: Star Wars: Battlefront

This one was easy. I would have been more than happy with a Battlefield 3 or Battlefield 4 mod that basically re-skinned the entire game into a Star Wars Battlefield game, but an entirely new and proper Star Wars: Battlefront game made by the guys and gals behind one of my favorite FPS franchises of all time? Yes, please. I can’t stop thinking about engaging in massive aerial X-wing vs. Tie Fighter dog fights as they wage war above the mega-cities of Coruscant and in between gigantic Imperial Star Destroyers and Rebel Cruisers. Make it happen, DICE! I better wrap this up or I risk drowning my keyboard in saliva.

Those are our picks, but more importantly, we want to hear from you! Tell us in the comments below, what were some of your most memorable multiplayer experiences of this generation and what next-gen multiplayer titles are you most looking forward to?

Call Of Duty: Ghosts Day One PS4 Patch Reportedly In The Works, Will Fix Frame Rate and Resolution Issues

On top of the PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ mandatory 31.1GB install, adopters of Sony’s next-generation console may also be in for a day one patch intended to smooth over a few of the game’s platform-specific issues.

As reported by various websites like Polygon and IGN in their next-gen reviews of the title, Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PlayStation 4 may enjoy the benefits of running at a higher native resolution than the Xbox One version, but it does, however, suffer from constant drops in frame rates, according to reviewers.

Luckily, according to a PS4-focused report from GiantBomb, a day-one patch is allegedly in the works at Infinity Ward that will address these frame rate issues.

“The early reviews of Call of Duty: Ghosts–including mine–mentioned that the PlayStation 4 version of the game suffers from occasional frame rate issues,” wrote GiantBomb editor Jeff Gerstmann. “For me, it usually showed up whenever there were a lot of particle effects on screen, but it’d pop up at random, too. I’m told that Infinity Ward is working on a patch to correct the performance issues.”

Eurogamer can exclusively reveal that Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PS4 will indeed receive a day-one patch, but that it’s primary purpose is to resolve a “configuration issue” that currently results the game’s single player campaign running at a 720p resolution, as opposed to a promised native 108op resolution.

“Call of Duty: Ghosts runs natively at 1080p on the PlayStation 4,” an Activision spokesperson told Eurogamer. “There was a configuration issue in the retail version on single-player mode only. This has been addressed with a day one software update. People will be able to download the day one update when PlayStation 4 launches in their territory and play at native 1080p.”

Either way, Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PlayStation 4 is in for some day-one patching, which can, hopefully, only mean good things.

How many of you are picking up Ghosts on the PS4?

Battlefield 4 PC Update Lands Tomorrow, Aims To Improve Network Smoothing and Reduce Crashing

After some downtime for maintenance during the early hours of this morning, developers DICE are ready to announce an incoming Battlefield 4 game update that will address some of the major issues currently affecting the game.

The update will be making its way to PC users first starting tomorrow, November 14 at around 10AM UTC/2AM PST and aims to focus on reducing the number of crashes, eliminating a network sync bug, and improving network smoothing, though it will include a number of other fixes in addition. The full list of patch notes will be detailed once the update has been applied, but here are the important points as detailed by DICE in a recent Battlelog update.

Reduce the number of crashes

We believe this update will solve a large portion of the most commonly occuring game crashes, and the improvement in overall stability should make a big difference for many players.

Eliminate a network sync bug

If you’ve been experiencing situations in multiplayer where it appears that you are taking damage from enemies through walls, you might have been the victim of a network sync bug. In this game update, we have identified and eliminated one such bug that caused this type of gameplay experience. We are continuing to work on more multiplayer optimizations concerning network performance.

Improve Network Smoothing

We have made some improvements to the ”Network Smoothing” functionality that you can find in the OPTIONS>GAMEPLAY menu. The Network Smoothing slider governs a group of settings that aim to produce a tighter multiplayer experience based on your specific packet loss situation.

“If you’ve been experimenting with the Network Smoothing slider earlier, it might now yield better results,” writes DICE. “If you haven’t tried it before, please explore this setting and set it to the lowest value you can without experiencing graphical glitches in the game. By setting it lower, you can get a tighter multiplayer experience, depending on your specific network situation.

We understand that stability has been rocky for some players, and hope that this update will make the game run smoother and more stable for you.”

So, give it a try tomorrow and let us know if you’ve experienced any improvements! Stay tuned for the update’s full list of patch notes shortly.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Infinity Ward to Debut Broadcaster Mode and eSports Settings November 22

A week or so before the game’s official launch, Call of Duty: Ghosts developers Infinity Ward teased a short video hinting at the inclusion of a Broadcaster Mode and the ability to tweak game mode settings to be more eSports-friendly.

While the features didn’t make it in at launch, we will get to see it in action, and maybe even see it implemented into the game, before the end of the month, according to eSports league MLG.

A recent tweet from the organization indicates that the Call of Duty: Ghosts Broadcaster Mode and eSports Options will be debuted at the MLG Championships in Columbus Ohio starting November 22.

Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 12.35.36 PM

Infinity Ward has yet to announce whether or not these features will find their way into the game by that point, but we hope so and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on any announcements.
