What’s Wrong with Battlefield 4

I think it goes without saying that DICE have made a fantastic game in Battlefield 4.  At least, we thought so in our review.  Like every game these days, it has it’s fair share of bugs and issues, but overall, it’s a solid game with great potential, most of which was expertly realized.  Unfortunately, the problems in Battlefield 4 are real and do have a negative impact on the multiplayer experience.

[youtube id=”mggmotwNMEA” width=”618″ height=”378″]

The Campaign

I’ll keep this brief because I doubt you care.  It’s astonishingly bad.  The only reason to play it is for the multiplayer weapon unlocks, and even then, I want the time I invested in playing follow the leader back.  Granted single player content isn’t DICE’s strength, it still begs the question, how is it acceptable to release something this bad that was developed with the resources available to DICE, namely, millions of dollars?

Networking/Sync Issues

The networking in BF4 is arguably better than BF3’s.  Bullets actually hit targets when you expect them to, for the most part at least, in BF4, whereas in BF3, thanks to random bullet spread and sluggish networking, it wasn’t the case nearly as often.  That said, it still leaves a lot to be desired. What scares me are a few words DICE executive producer Patrick Bach once said in an interview; “You can never have a game like Battlefield, with the complexity of the amount of players, vehicles, bullet trajectory, destruction, etc., and have a perfect net code that is one hundred percent perfect,” he said.  So, does that mean we’ll never have the type of smooth gameplay that we so very much crave?

I can’t even begin to express how frustrating it is to lay out an enemy only to be mutually killed after I get the kill.  Yes, there are bullet physics at play, but even so, I call BS on how frequently I get mutual kills.  The only time I remember it being this bad was in the Close Quarters DLC for BF3, which I think most people will agree was a great demonstration of why the BF3 engine didn’t work well as a COD clone.

Additionally, many users have reported all kinds of bizarre issues regarding animation/player syncing, broken hit detection/registration, delayed hit notifications, and a myriad of other isolated and widespread issues that need to be fixed ASAP.

The Unlock Progression

I’d be lying if I said not having to play for hours upon hours just to get the unlocks I want for a given gun isn’t a breath of fresh air in BF4.  But giving new players an explosive weapon by default for every class was a massive mistake on DICE’s part with BF4.  Instead of forcing new players to learn the purpose of each kit through practice, they’ve essentially said, here’s something that explodes, have fun.  Players in BF4 are much less likely to drop Med or Ammo kits/packs and those that do are typically getting XM25ed constantly.  Granted, I think if someone plays for long enough, they’ll realize that doing 5 damage to a tank with their grenade launcher isn’t very effective. There’s still the obvious individual benefit of having a grenade launcher instead of Defibs; you can kill players without expending the effort of having to maintain proper aim or having to be selective with your targeting But this is why we call them noobtubes DICE. They’re crutches, non-valuable weapons that teach players to imagine themselves as one man armies, not teammates.

In conclusion, there as some issues to be had with Battlepacks and Vehicle balance, but overall I think those are issues that won’t have much of a long-term impact on BF4.  The campaign sets a precedent for AAA game design that says it’s okay to produce awful content.  The network issues ruin some players’ experience absolutely and frustrate most players in general.  The unlock progression encourages noob tactics that discourages teamwork, which is one of the central tenants and features of Battlefield. But overall, BF4 is still a solid multiplayer title and I’m optimistic that the multiplayer issues will at least be addressed if not fixed promptly by DICE.  And no, two weeks is not promptly, it’s absurd.  There is no way to properly test, patch, retest, and distribute a patch that fixes these issues in 2 weeks.  That said, I’m not waiting six months for a proper patch either, DICE.

Without turning things into a Battlefield 4 bash-fest, tell us what are some of the things that irk you about the game that you’d like to see fixed or tweaked!

Watch The Battlefield 4 Second Assault Launch Trailer

Check out Operation Métro, Caspian Border, Operation Firestorm and Gulf of Oman rebuilt in the Frostbite 3 engine for Battlefield 4‘s upcoming expansion, Second Assault.

The DLC will land on the Xbox One this Friday, November 22 as a timed-exclusive, but will also eventually make its way to other platforms at a later date. Naturally, Premium members will get their hands on it two weeks before non-Premium members.

Check out the brand new launch trailer below, and be sure to visit this page where we rounded up a ton of Xbox One gameplay footage captured by a number of Battlefield YouTube personalities at a recent EA event.

[youtube id=”O-Zte36afXw” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Clearly, there appears to be a bit of a story to these maps this time around, as you will do battle once again two years after the battles that took place in Battlefield 3. Second Assault also introduces new weapons, new vehicles, and a new game mode; Capture the Flag.

Which Second Assault map are you most pumped to revisit?

EA Eyeing Up Multiple Platforms For Titanfall Sequels

While newly formed studio Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming, highly anticipated, sci-fi FPS Titanfall may be destined to remain exclusive to the Xbox and PC throughout the entirety of its life time, publisher EA certainly has its eye on other platforms when it comes to any future follow ups the series might hold.

During an EA investor call last night, EA exec. Blake J. Jorgensen expressed interest in bringing the IP to platforms other than the Xbox 360, Xbox One or PC.

“I’m sure that there will be future Titanfalls at some point that may be on multiple product platforms,” he said.

“[I] don’t know, that’s up to the teams that are going through that now, but at the end of the day, we’re excited about this Titanfall and we think it will be a big title and it will be great for Xbox One.”

You may remembers Tweets from Respawn founder Vince Zampella last month answering whether or not the studio will ever bring Titanfall to the PlayStation platforms. “Of course we will,” he said. “Just not the first Titanfall.”

Borderlands 2 Head Hunter Pack 2: Wattle Gobbler Arrives November 26

As hard as it is to believe, Gearbox Software is still hard at work in providing new DLC for Borderlands 2 with their Head Hunter packs, which fans can expect at least two more of after the release of T.K Baha’s Bloody Harvest last month.

Those who have been patiently waiting on the next Head Hunter pack to be released won’t have to wait long as the “Wattle Gobbler” will be ready for download on November 26 according to a listing from Major Nelson.

Much like Bloody Harvest, Wattle Gobbler will be priced at $2.99 USD and will be holiday-themed, since this is November, after all. You can expect Wattle Gobbler to be a Thanksgiving themed DLC, putting you up to the task of taking down a giant hostile turkey which will serve as Wattle Gobbler’s boss. Which you can watch gameplay of the upcoming DLC here.

Additionally, you can expect Wattle Gobbler to come with it’s own set of skins and heads, but at the moment, details on these customization items haven’t been made available yet.

Dubbed the “Beach Bum” update, as most of its content is beach-themed, it also introduced a number of behind-the-scenes tweaks that you may not have noticed at first glance. Not only did the studio fix a handful of issues and bugs affecting the game, but they also made significant alterations in the way the “Bad Sport” system works, how rewards are given, and in other areas.

Free GTA Online “Beach Bum” Update Available Today

Today, those who are still causing havoc in Grand Theft Auto 5‘s online component can look forward to the first of many free updates that are set to arrive throughout GTA Online’s life span.

The Beach Bum update is now available as of this writing on the Xbox 360 and soon to follow during the day on the PlayStation 3. It brings new jobs, new aesthetic items such as new hairstyles and clothing – all beach-themed, of course – as well some new hardware like the SNS pistol and a broken bottle.

Of course, since this is Grand Theft Auto after all, it wouldn’t be complete without any new vehicles to drive in. The Beach Bum Pack will add four new vehicles; the BF Bifta dune buggy, Canis Kalahari off-road truck, Bravado Paradise beach camper van and the Speeder speedboat, all which can be viewed below:

Thankfully, these new vehicles will all be available for free, which is great for those who might have already blown through the stimulus package that was recently deposited into the banks of GTA Online players.

Anything you’re looking forward to in this GTA Online update? Let us know in the comment section below?

New Battlefield 4 Second Assault Details – Differences Between Old Vs. New Maps, Levolution and Vehicles

Battlefield YouTube personality LevelCapGaming, who has had a few hours of hands-on time with Battlefield 4‘s upcoming Second Assault expansion during a recent press event, is answering questions about the DLC via a posting on Reddit.

“So I just spent a few hours playing the 4 new second assault maps,” he writes. “Metro, Oman, Caspian and Firestorm. Metro looks great, with new paths, fire that spreads through the grass outside and the ability to kill the lights. Oman looks very similar except the beach is now super rocky providing good cover and the sand storm is crazy! Caspian’s new wall makes a big difference in the flow of vehicular combat. Firestorm is extremely fiery now. Lots of gas leaks that will kill people standing too close.”

He went on to answer a few questions about the DLC, revealing some of the key differences between the original Battlefield 3 maps and their newly reimagined Battlefield 4 variations.

Q: What are the vehicles on Oman? And does the US still spawn on the carrier? Oman was my fav map of all time so im super excited!!!A: There is still a carrier. Once the sandstorm starts you can’t even see it. Vehicles look the same as before, helicopters, jets, tanks, etc. Skid loader is back with vengeance. That thing has a crazy top speed now and you can operate the shovel. Skid loader = OP

Q: How is Metro now, is it more like OP Locker with more paths that prevents choke points (at least in 32p version of the map) or is it still the same clusterf*ck?

A: It will play very much like the old metro. But has a few more sneaky paths. Also the elevators work but none of this will change that good old clusterf*ck feeling of metro.

Q: Is Conquest on Metro still 3 flags? Or did they add another flag in the park area?

A: 3 flags on conquest. Also they blocked off some of the paths so it gets more narrow on conquest.

Q: Whats the Levolution event on each map?

A: So massive tower on caspian is a really cool event. Creates a bridge up to the D point area as we’ll. Oman is the sandstorm and I believe you can bring a crane down. I think metro is smaller levolution stuff like bringing down the ceiling. Firestorm you can destroy the giant pipeline creating a fiery hazard. I didn’t get to see it.

Q: Did the flag placement change? Are there any additional buildings on Oman. Is metro still the one tunnel only or can you go outside? What are the new assignments? Would be sweet if you could answer some.

A: Oman looks very similar buildings are almost identical with small changes. I didn’t see it but apparently you can bring down one of the construction cranes.

We’ll update this post if any further interesting comments arise. Be sure to stay tuned to MP1st tomorrow where we’ll have a round-up of Second Assault footage right here. There’s also a Second Assault live stream to keep an eye on with developers DICE LA.

Battlefield 4 Second Assault launches on the Xbox One first this Friday, November 22.

Report – Xbox One Controller Built to Please The Hardcore and eSports Crowd

Something you probably didn’t know: There are a group of gamers that Microsoft internally labels as “Golden Hands”. These are what folks like Xbox’s general manager for accessories Zulfi Alam describe as hardcore gamers who spend countless hours with the same controller session after session. They become so comfortable with it, in fact, that they understand it better than the ones who designed it.

That’s why the studio responsible for the Xbox 360 controller’s transformation into the newly redesigned Xbox One controller was initially met with hesitation.

“When we started this program, I went and said, ‘Hey, we need to think about redesigning the Xbox 360 controller,'” Alam recently told VentureBeat in an exclusive report that dives into the controller’s development. “The reaction was vociferously negative. ‘Are you guys crazy? This is the best-in-class controller. People love this.'”

“We were told, ‘Fine, go ahead and invest in this space, but make sure you review and counter-review everything. Make sure you build prototypes up front. Make sure you get them tested with golden hands,'” said Alam. “That was the bar. The bar was extraordinarily high.”

So, what about these so-called “Golden Hands?” While it would make sense to invest in a more casual and mainstream-friendly input device, that’s what the Kinect is for, says Microsoft. With the Xbox One controller, Microsoft is going after the most hardcore of gamers, even those involved in the eSports scene, VentureBeat reports.

“People invested a lot of time in learning this,” said Microsoft senior industrial designer Quintin Morris. “The muscle memory of being able to hit these buttons really quickly gets imprinted on you, so you can do it without thinking. The people who had invested that time would lose the benefit of all their experience [if we changed too much].”

With Xbox putting their foot in the door to the growing eSports industry by sponsoring events like the Call of Duty: Championship earlier this year and the recent Battlefield 4 Showdown Live tournament, it’s not a complete surprise that the company intends to invest more into the design of a controller that has been a mainstay at these sort of events.

We’ll see, and feel, Microsoft’s work in action when the Xbox One launches this Friday, November 22.

Call of Duty: Ghosts PC Patch Reduces 6GB RAM Requirement, Adds Broadcaster Mode and eSports Rules

A 400+MB update to the PC version of Call of Duty: Ghosts has recently hit Steam and is now available for download.

As of this writing, official patch notes are unavailable, but members of the PC community were quick to point out a few of the changes.

Reddit user mkapex1 had this to say about a few of the update’s additions.

  • “Menu stutter is gone 6GB requirement to launch the game has been waived for 4GBs.”
  • “Some cod esports stuff in private match was added.”
  • “In game stutter still exists (tested on amd parts) the framerate still caps to 91 confirmed.”

Thanks to user SayYesToMesses, we were able to grab a few details and screens of the new eSports setting and Broadcaster Mode which were both introduced in this patch. You’ll find rules that are hard-coded for game modes like Search & Destroy as well as Blitz, though there are other equipment, weapon, or perk restrictions to play around with as well.

Broadcaster mode features a first-person, third-person, and over-the-shoulder view, as well as a few options for recording videos.

Broadcaster Mode

Both features were originally set to debut during the MLG Championships in Columbus Ohio, but it looks like PC users, at least, will be able to get a taste of the new functions before hand. A similar update for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Ghosts is expected in the coming days.

New Battlefield 4 Second Assault Footage and Details

This November 22, Second Assault is coming to Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One, later for other platforms, and will be bringing with it four fan-favorite Battlefield 3 maps that have been reimagined in the Frostbite 3 engine and “treated with the Levolution concept that [DICE is] having for Battlefield 4,” says Executive Produce Patrick Bach.

Speaking to Matt Cuttle of FTW, Bach explained that all four returning maps; Gulf of Oman, Caspian Border, Operation Firestorm and Operation Métro, will “all have the big, epic events, but also the smaller things where you can turn on and off things and you can alter and change the map as a player.” All maps will “get the full treatment”, says Bach, mentioning that “you will recognize them and you might think you know them but they will be quite different.”

Naturally, Battlefield 4’s factions and game modes will carry over to the newly reimagined maps as well, but DICE will also be reintroducing Capture the Flag, a game mode that was first introduced in Battlefield 3’s End Game expansion.

For full details on the expansion, check out the official feature list that was recently updated on the Battlefield 4 website:

Second Assault – November 22 on Xbox One

  • 4 fan-favorite maps redesigned with the power of Frostbite 3
    •  Operation Metro 2014
    •  Caspian Border 2014
    •  Gulf of Oman 2014
    •  Operation Firestorm 2014
  • 5 weapons re-mastered for Battlefield 4
  • Dune Buggy (DPV) vehicle makes its return to the Battlefield
  • Capture the Flag game mode
  • 10 new assignments with their own unlocks
  • Available to Battlefield 4 Premium members 2 weeks early
  • Second Assault will be released as a timed exclusive for Xbox One at the console’s release on November 22.

Lastly, catch some of the brand new Battlefield 4 Second Assault footage showcased during Bach’s interview in the video below:

Star Citizen On PS4 and Xbox One – No Plans to Port The Game To Either Console, Though That May Change

In a lengthy forum post, Star Citizen creator Christopher Roberts opens up on the importance of PC gaming along with the possibilities of consoles ports happening.

For those hoping that the giant PC game would hit either the PS3 or Xbox 360, you’ll be out of luck considering that the dev team doesn’t want to dumb down the game for a “lesser platform”. Though, this doesn’t leave the PS4 and Xbox One version out of question, as they have stated that the specs for these systems are that of a mid-range PC.

“Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform,” he said on his forums. “We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations.”

As far as consoles go Star Citizen will never be on the PS3 or Xbox 360. As for the next-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, we have NO CURRENT PLANS, but my stance remains open and is consistent with the many interviews I’ve given –

This is ironically the advantage the next-gen consoles have like PS4 and Xbox One – they abstract the low-level hardware much less, so what is essentially a mid-level gaming PC of today (which are what the PS4 and Xbox One specs are) punches above its performance weight while Windows and Direct X do a nice job of handicapping the high-end PC.

This is entirely up to Sony and Microsoft as the level of openness for these platforms will matter whether or not they will even consider a port.

IF the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time-consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would CONSIDER supporting them.

So far, the only company of the big two that has approached the Star Citzen Dev team is Sony, and they even went as far as to give them a dev kit to mess around with, though Christopher makes it very clear what needs to be done if Sony wants to see the game on the PS4.

But this is a big IF as it’s asking a lot. To their credit Sony seems to be the most eager to embrace indie games and the idea of openness, and they chased us down to give us some dev kits to play with but we’ve been very clear on what it would take to get Star Citizen onto PS4.

Interesting indeed. What are you’re guy’s thoughts for a next-gen console port of Star Citizen?

Thanks Gameranx.

Killzone: Shadow Fall – 24-Player TDM Warzone Now Available, Clan System Integration, FFA and More May Return

By popular demand, Killzone: Shadow Fall has been updated VIA server-side and now officially supports 24 players in an official Team Death Match Warzone. Though this is certainly a joy, Gurrrilla Games has also stated that other features are being looked into and may return if demand is high enough.

In addition to this, they have also responded to multiple tweets, saying that if there is a high enough demand for features they will add them. They already stated that a clan system is currently being integrated along with looking into the issue of the text being too small. Among other things the studio will most likely implement later along the lines are the return of Assassination, voice chat (in-game), and even the infiltrator class. Free-for-all Deathmatch is also being looked into, and if the demand is high enough, players can expect this to return too.

South Paw controls are also being looked into

Though they are sending in feedback to the main dev team, players shouldn’t expect split-screen to happen for the highly popular game mode from Killzone 3, Operations, to make a return to the game. But who knows? We may be surprised later along the line.

Our Shadow Fall Multiplayer review is currently being worked on, so be on the look out for that in the coming weeks.

Incoming Battlefield 4 Updates For PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4

In a continuing effort to smooth out a number of the game’s launch issues, Battlefield 4 developers DICE are rolling out number of updates for the various versions of the game within the coming days.

PlayStation 4 owners might have noticed a quick server update yesterday aimed at addressing “a very severe crash issue”. More tweaking is in store for the platform, however, as DICE writes they “are aware of the frequent crashes in Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 4.” The studio continued in a recent Battlelog report, writing that they “are hard at work identifying these issues and are hoping to get a game update out early next week.”

Likewise, Xbox 360 owners can look forward to an incoming game update that is currently undergoing final testing. “We are hoping to get this update live soon, and will let you know as soon as it has passed final stages of testing and is ready for deployment,” writes DICE. We presume that a number of the tweaks and improvements in this particular game update will be similar to what the PC version underwent last week. You can check out the patch notes for the previous PC patch right here.

Lastly, yet another patch is in store for the PC version of Battlefield 4, “aimed at fixing a number of remaining issues in the game.” Exact details on its contents and time of release will be detailed at a “later date”.

DICE “Investigating” a “Beta” or “Test” Version of Battlefield 4 To Fix Bugs

Developers Digital Illusions CE might have had a busy week updating the PC version of Battlefield 4, but the patching is far from over.

Not only have the console versions of Battlefield 4 yet to receive any sort of update similar to the one the PC version received just last Thursday, but there are a number of other issues at hand that still require attention, including game crashes that the studio just can’t seem to shake.

Thanks to the sharp eyes of redditor Cucobr, we learned that DICE is looking into ways to smooth out the patching process in hopes to fix more issues than some of these new updates might potentially introduce. One avenue the studio is “investigating” is to open up a test version of the game to allow volunteers to experiment with different builds.

“You are right, building a game for PC is very difficult,” a DICE developer who goes by the name “FancySquirrel” on the Battlelog forums said in response concerns. “The huge amount of different [hardware] configurations out there is insane. And in BF4 we push the HW to its limits which makes these problems even more apparent. We are now investigating if we could have a ‘beta’ or ‘test’ version of the game up where we get the help from you (those of you who want to) test the game before [a patch] goes live.”

In no way is this an official announcement of such “test” or “beta” servers, but it might be something to look forward to if you happen to be keen on helping out DICE test new updates. In the end, it might just lead to a much more efficient patching process for a big, expansive game like Battlefield 4.

What are your thoughts. Do you think DICE, and us, the players, could benefit from “test” or “beta” servers? Let us know in the comments!

Nearly 10 Minutes of Raw, Unedited, Pre-Alpha DayZ Standalone Footage

You’ve been warned. Seriously. Check out the warning in this video.

DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall has whipped up nearly 10 minutes of pre-alpha DayZ Standalone gameplay that sums up the current state of the game in its development. You can see that all the parts are there, but with some missing polish. Regardless, it’s looking pretty good.

“Been a while so here is a raw, unedited, roughly 10 minute gameplay video taken after spawning into a multiplayer test today,” writes Hall. “This is pre-alpha footage, so it makes no effort to mask the variety of bugs. Our whole focus is on getting the alpha out, which means focusing on Multiplayer (server) performance. Enjoy and see you soon!”

[youtube id=”2aRJhG2TwR0″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

The Standalone version of DayZ still awaits an official release date as the studio works through a few performance issues outlined by Hall last week.
