Killzone: Shadow Fall Q&A – Co-Op, Splitscreen, Dedicated Servers, Ranking System and More

Answering all of your dying Killzone: Shadow Fall questions, Guerrilla Games developers have gathered a bucket-full of questions from various social media services and organized them into one convenient PlayStation Blog post.

You’ll be able to find a ton of good info here, including talk of co-op, split-screen (which is, unfortunately, something the studio is not currently looking into), dedicated servers, the revamped ranking system, and much more.

Watch out for Killzone: Shadow Fall this November 15, launching alongside the PlayStation 4.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Q&A

@ShawnMacLean: Is Killzone Shadow Fall a good entry point to the Killzone franchise? (source)

Steven Ter Heide: Absolutely! In many ways, Killzone Shadow Fall is a fresh start for the franchise — the game takes place some thirty years after the original Killzone trilogy, so most of the characters and story arcs from those games have passed into history. And while die-hard fans will appreciate the nods to earlier Killzone titles, no knowledge of the Killzone universe is required to get into the story.

@nick_serio: How long is the campaign? (‏source)

STH: Killzone Shadow Fall’s campaign should last well over 10 hours for most gamers.

@DGuetta52: Will Killzone’s campaign be co-op? (source)

STH: No, the campaign will not have a co-op mode. However, we’re planning to release a separate Online Co-op Expansion Pack after launch; it will add a new wave-based game mode, in which up to four players take on hordes of enemies in special arena maps. For more information about the Online Co-Op Expansion Pack, please refer to our Season Pass announcement.

@LB_Ed: Any plans for split screen support? Playing a game has always been more fun locally then online. (source)

STH: We currently have no plans for split-screen support.

@Mr_Tom_B: Will Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer run on dedicated servers, or peer to peer? Will there be peer-to-peer hosting at all? (source)

STH: We are running with dedicated servers to handle the transfer of data between clients.

@IronSir: How will the level system in multiplayer work? (source)

STH: We have a Challenge-based system, where completing one of the 1,500 Challenges will increase your rank by one. We will continue to add new Challenges after launch.

@MrFredchr: Why did you choose to remove XP and levels? (source)

STH: Levels are part of the game, as completing one of the 1,500 Challenges increases your rank. However, we felt XP was less about skill and more about time, so we designed a new system with a greater emphasis on skill.

@Fishrock123: Any news of vehicles in the multiplayer? (source)

STH: Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer will not have any vehicles (such as Exoskeletons or Jetpacks) at launch. We wanted to ensure that player-created, custom Warzones work on all multiplayer maps, and the inclusion of vehicles would have introduced too many new variables and exceptions to guarantee this.

@BucktownzFinest: Since there are Warzones to join, does that mean there’s no standard matchmaking? (‏source)

STH: Not sure what you mean by standard matchmaking, but when you select a Warzone, the game will then look for a suitable match to join.

@WilliamPeter417: How many weapons are available for customization for multiplayer mode? (‏source)

STH: Killzone Shadow Fall will have 22 weapons at launch, and pretty much all of them can be enhanced with various attachments.

@HamseD: Since all the weapons are unlocked, what about the attachments? (source)

STH: Attachments are not unlocked by default — you can unlock them by completing Challenges.

@TheWroster: ‏How will the DS4 touchpad work in this game? (source)

STH: For singleplayer we are using the touchpad to select the mode the OWL is in. It can be set into four different modes with quick swipes on the touchpad. For multiplayer, we use it to bring up menus.

@double_T_azn: Will there be more hand to hand takedowns than what we’ve seen in previous trailers? (source)

STH: We have a variety of melee moves, including combo kills where you take down two enemies in quick succession, or a dropdown melee. The dropdown is also available in multiplayer.

@double_T_azn: Will there be bonuses for transferring Vita saves for Killzone: Mercenary onto the PS4? (source)

STH: No, we have no plans for connectivity between Killzone: Mercenary and Killzone Shadow Fall.

@nurseman22: My question is: where have you been all my life? (source)

STH: Right here in the studio, working hard on Killzone Shadow Fall!

Titanfall – Xbox Live’s Major Nelson “Not Worried” About Timed Exclusivity

Someone is not worried about Titanfall being only a timed-exclusive for Microsoft’s Xbox platforms or the PC.

Rumor and hearsay will have you believe that Titanfall, the debut shooter coming out of the newly formed Respawn Entertainment studio, will only be exclusive to the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC for a timed period, and will later make its way to platforms like the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4.

While it’s certainly a possibility as lead artist on the game Joel Emslie did say during E3 2013 that developing the game for other platforms is “definitely not out of the question,” official channels have yet to make such an announcement.

As is stands, well-known Xbox Live personality Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, is confident that Titanfall will remain an Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC exclusive for good. Answering questions on Reddit, Hyrb stated, “As far as being an exclusive that’s really a question for Titanfall – I’m not worried about it though.”

Looks like current PlayStation 3 and future PlayStation 4 owners will have to hang tight and either wait for a change of heart, or Titanfall 2.

Introducing MP1st Phoenix, a Completely New Look and Feel

It has been quite a while since the last major website update for MP1st. The roots of the current theme go back to just a few months after the site launched back in August 2011. Things have changed and evolved but the basics have remained the same.

A few months ago I started writing down some ideas on how to improve the site. Our current theme is also starting to show its age, so I decided to throw it all out and start from scratch. Today, I am proud to finally be able to show this to you! I called this new theme “Phoenix”: As this console cycle is coming to and end, so is MP1st, but only to be reborn and better than ever!

“So what exactly has changed, apart from everything?”, you might ask. The most important change would be a fresh new responsive design. This means no more mobile site and no separate tablet site. There is only one version, but it’s a special one! It will react to how much space it has and change the way the page is structured to best fit in that space.

The second most obvious thing is infinite scrolling. Whenever you are on the homepage or an archive page, just scroll down and keep going as long as you want. On top of that, it will also keep track of where you are. For instance, if you scroll to page 30, click an article and then press the back button, it will take you back to page 30 so you don’t have to scroll down all the way from the top. Some people don’t like infinite scrolling, so I have provided an option to turn it off.

scroll

Next up: a sidebar with related items for news articles. In case you missed a previous post or just want to keep reading about the same topic, just take a look in the sidebar and it will be all right there!

sidebar

One of my main design goals was to put the content in the first place. You come here for the content, so I have added several new post designs with more to come. Features like opinion pieces, reviews and interviews will now be able to use the full width of the page. This will give the writers and editors a lot more power to make their posts look less like a blog post and more like something you will find in a magazine.

wide

These are just a few of the many new features and optimizations you can look forward to. What I’m really excited about is that you get to try it today. I have put online a beta site which you can find right here:

dev.mp1st.com

Bookmark it if you wish, and check it out for yourself (just keep in mind news posts won’t get synced immediately)! Everything is still a work in progress and very much subject to change, so we want to give you guys a chance to try it out and leave us with some of your thoughts.

To make sure everything goes smooth when the new look goes live, I also suggest trying it out on your mobile devices. If you come across any issues please report them to me in the comments here or on the forum post with development plans and updates.

Feel free to hit us up on Twitter or Facebook with any comments as well!

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: Questions Unanswered

The idiom “hurry up and wait” comes to mind when discussing statements made by both Microsoft and Sony.

For those unfamiliar with the saying, US military branches have a policy of showing up to meetings at least 15 minutes early (“If you’re 5 minutes early, you’re already 10 minutes late” goes hand-in-hand with this). However, just because you show up early doesn’t necessarily equate to the meeting starting early or on time. It can leave a soldier plenty of time to ponder why he/she is arriving so early and waiting around when those who are higher rank aren’t showing the same level of responsibility.

That’s the gist of the message Microsoft and Sony are delivering to potential customers this fall. Promises of previous-gen headset support and an array of indie titles will no doubt entice customers to buy on launch day, but closer examination of past statements reveals we might be waiting well past launch for some of these promises to come to fruition.

Here are some unanswered questions pertaining to both the Xbox One and PS4.

Xbox One

What’s going on with ID@Xbox?

Seemingly in direct response to Sony’s proclamation that the PS4 would be indie-dev friendly, Microsoft revealed the ID@Xbox program earlier this year. ID@Xbox will provide licensed indie-devs the ability to use their retail console as dev-kits, access Xbox features such as Achievements and Smartglass, and self-publish. Microsoft has already stated the ID@Xbox program won’t be rolled out fully until sometime in 2014, but questions still remain at the moment.

For example, Gaijin Entertainment stated as recently as August that policies regarding Microsoft certification are still unknown. Self-publishing will eventually be possible with ID@Xbox sometime next year, but how will publishing work for indie-devs in the mean time? Will patches still have to pass the lengthy Microsoft certification process? If Microsoft is truly trying to win over indie developers and convince consumers that there will be a bevy of indie titles for Xbox One, these policies need to be detailed to the public as to not come off merely as lip-service.

Another issue indie developers have had with the Xbox platform is how their games were showcased. Indie titles have never been prominently displayed in the game marketplace (much less a showcase at E3) with users having to wade through multiple levels of menus just to find them. Microsoft promised this would change for the Xbox One, but if the E3 interface demo is any indicator, indie titles will still not be prominently displayed on the Games tab.

Is the Kinect sensor worth the extra $100?

Microsoft has conceded pricing to Sony by making the Kinect included with all Xbox One’s. The idea is that if there are more potential customers, then developers will be more apt to create Kinect titles. The question now isn’t ‘Will there be Kinect games’, but rather ‘Will they be worth playing’?

If Microsoft is trying to make motion gaming viable, they are already starting on bad footing. Namely, they’ve decided to keep Kinect as their branding for motion gaming. There’s nothing wrong with the name in and of itself, but Microsoft has already damaged the reputation of the brand thanks to the first-gen Kinect’s outing on Xbox 360. The first-gen Kinect made a great dust collector was terrible at almost everything. Microsoft misjudged the average available space in a room, which resulted in many people having to rearrange tables and other furniture in order to just begin playing. Once that’s out of the way, good luck with Kinect keeping track of all your limbs. With the exclusion of the title Child of Eden — a title which only needs to keep track of your hands — Kinect would often lose sight of my legs. This would either result in the intended action not being performed in game or the game insisting that I ‘move back in front of the Kinect sensor’ despite already being directly in front of it. There are those who have undoubtedly got their money’s worth from their Kinect, but the overwhelming majority would sooner characterize the experience as “buggy” and “underwhelming” rather than “fun” or “exceeded expectations”.

Needless to say, Microsoft has its work cut out to prove Kinect can work for gaming. But since E3, they seem more content displaying how proficient it is at doing tasks like pinning apps and searching on Bing. All the things a gamer could ever want to pay an additional $100 for without ever being given an option otherwise (hooray!). That’s not to say these new voice commands don’t seem useful, but they could’ve been just as viable using a Xbox headset or placing a cheap omnidirectional microphone either in the controller or the console itself.

So what is there to go on to see that the problems with the original Kinect — namely limb detection and input latency — won’t be an issue this go round? At this point, almost nothing. Crimson Dragon is being touted as a must-play title, but the fact it has switched from ‘Kinect only’ to ‘Kinect optional’ makes it appear as if the developers couldn’t get the controls with Kinect to function suitably. If it’s actual footage you seek, then look no further then this video for Ubisoft’s Fighter Within. The footage is from August, but it is no less alarming to see such a noticeable delay between actual user movement and their actions in-game. Is this video a sign of what to expect from all Kinect titles, or merely a case of shoddy developing? With Microsoft’s reluctance to show live demonstrations of Kinect gameplay, don’t expect a definitive answer until after Xbox One’s launch.

How does ‘The Cloud’ bridge the gap with Sony’s more powerful hardware?

One element to the Xbox One equation Microsoft hasn’t hesistated touting is “the cloud”. Azure, Microsoft’s server farm, promises to do a lot more than just store game saves offering dedicated servers for all titles and the ability to offset a portion of the CPU workload to “the cloud”. Microsoft promises “the cloud” will be what gives them the upper hand despite having less powerful hardware than Sony. Besides the fact no other game company has tried this before, its still hard not to raise an eyebrow at some of Microsoft’s claims.

The main example Microsoft has given of how a developer could offload work from the console to “the cloud” is making it handle AI and lighting. The idea is by freeing up resources locally on the console, developers can incorporate better graphics into their games. If I had a rock-steady fiber optic connection, I’d be more than happy for “the cloud” to do this. In reality, I have a 10Mb/s DOWN 1Mb/s UP cable connection that occasionally goes out due to neighborhood outages or router issues. Those are occasional inconveniences, but what’s a consistent issue is how the connection tanks around 5-8PM each evening. Once everyone in the area gets home from work and hops online, significant latency and connection issues become the norm. To see graphic fidelity drop and dynamic lighting suddenly disappear would completely ruin any element of game immersion.

Internet variables aside, for all the noise being made about how powerful “the cloud” is, the only companies that have expressed excitement publicly are Microsoft, Turn 10 (First-Party), and Respawn Entertainment (timed-exclusive Titanfall). Where are all the third-party companies talking about how great “the cloud” is? The industry’s indifference to Azure is somewhat reminiscent to their response of Sony’s Cell processor. Much like Microsoft has done with “the cloud”, Sony hyped Cell making claims that it would be impossible for games to look as good on other hardware. The hype never quite matched reality — save for a few first-party titles — as many developers struggled with the PS3.  Grumblings of difficulties developing for PS3 persisted throughout most of its lifespan. Many of the initial multiplatform titles looked noticeably better on Xbox 360. Back in 2007, Gabe Newell called the PS3 “a total disaster” and ultimately passed development of the PS3 version of The Orange Box to EA. Skyrim’s DLC packs were released nearly 6 months after the Xbox 360 version. When it came time for Sony to inquire developers what they would like to see included in the PS4, they insisted the Cell processor be dropped.

Time will ultimately tell how much of a difference “the cloud” will make on next-gen titles, but the uniform shrug from the industry leads me to believe “the cloud’s” graphical prowess is all hype and no substance.

PS4

What happened to Bluetooth headset compatibility?

Back in June when Microsoft had dreams of always-on DRM, it was revealed Xbox 360 headsets wouldn’t be compatible with the Xbox One and the new chat headset would be sold separately from the console (Major Nelson’s unboxing video months later showed a headset would, in fact, be bundled with the console). Never to miss an opportunity to kick their competition while they are down, Sony was quick to point out that the PS4 would support PS3 Bluetooth headsets and would come with a chat earbud packed in with the PS4. While the earbud remains, Sony has seemingly done a Microsoft 180 as it pertains to Bluetooth headset compatibility. According to Game Informer, the PS4 will not support PS3 USB headsets until a post-launch patch (the patch currently doesn’t have an expected launch date). More alarming is the statement that “any other headset that relies on bluetooth for chat will not work at all”.

On one hand, the move will eliminate low-quality, off brand Bluetooth headsets you can find at your local Walgreens or CVS from being used. On the other hand, it’s hard not to see this move as anything more than Sony pilfering your pockets ‘stimulating’ the accessory market. Bluetooth has predominantly been an open standard, but it is definitely possible to apply restrictions. Ever try to send photos via Bluetooth from an Android handset or flip phone to an iPhone? The iPhone will politely tell you “this device is not supported”. Considering Sony’s infatuation with proprietary memory on their portable handhelds, it wouldn’t surprise me if Sony wants to make a cash grab for the PS4 headset market as well. Better get used to checking for ‘compatible with PS4’ on the boxes of your preferred Plantronics and Jawbone headsets before making a purchase.

(Edit: Pertaining to basic bluetooth earpieces – This may not be as much of an issue since the Dualshock controller now has a headset jack for hardwire headsets. Thanks to Edward Wang for pointing this out.)

Those who should be most upset though are owners of the PS3 Pulse headsets. The initial announcement that PS4 support would be included never led anyone to believe Sony meant sometime after launch. Many owners who trade in their PS3 will now be left with a surround sound headset they’ve grown accustomed to that won’t work. It was a calculated, misleading, and disingenuous statement by Sony. Don’t be surprised if there is an announcement for a PS4 version of the PULSE headset before support has been added for the PS3 version.

When is capture card compatibility coming?

Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the PS4 would have capture card support, but not at launch. So when will capture card support be available? At the moment, Sony has been mum on when capture card compatibility would eventually be added. Open ended release dates like this essentially entitle Sony to add capture card support at their leisure. The lack of a proposed release window in Yoshida’s tweet is pause for concern. If they don’t deem it to be a pressing issue, capture card support could be put on the backburner indefinitely.

Since the PS4 will not feature an A/V port, the breakout cable DRM workaround won’t be viable this time around. You can still capture live streams on Twitch thanks to built-in support and watch 15-minute clips from other users. Those proposed solutions aren’t all that elegant when all you want to do is watch your favorite YouTube personalities do walkthroughs, montages, and ‘Let’s Play’ all over slick transition animations and dubstep game appropriate music.

Let’s not forget the YouTube content creators themselves. Many people who make great content — as well as popular personalities who make not so great content — won’t be able to upon launch. If they wish to continue to stay relevant and keep revenue coming in, their choice of next-gen console is essentially being made for them by Sony’s omission. Could those YouTube personalities switch boat midstream? Potentially, but with the already high cost of investment getting into just one console, its highly unlikely.

That means all the next-gen videos in November (and potentially beyond) will be featuring the Xbox One logo and controller layout throughout. For certain age demographics (particularly teenagers), this could easily give off the impression the Xbox One is the console of choice and influence their purchasing decision. Launch day sales will be unaffected by this, but what about those making a Christmas wishlist? Or waiting for their birthday in 2014? Or a tax return? The sooner Sony can get capture card support added, the less they’ll have to worry.

It would be nice to see better communication and a heightened sense of urgency from both companies to fulfill all their promises. The lackadaisical approach — especially in this economic climate — isn’t exactly endearing to fans. We’ll definitely be monitoring both consoles to see when these questions are answered so keep your sights set on MP1st for a follow-up article at launch 2013 2014 whenever we can get around to it.

How would you guys rate Microsoft and Sony’s communication to consumers this past year? Let us know in the comment below.

Microsoft To Extend ‘Games With Gold’ Promotion

Originally announced back at this year’s E3 convention, Microsoft’s Games With Gold promotion would give Xbox Live Gold members two free games per month until the month of December – the most recent freebie being Bungie’s Halo 3.

Lucky for those who like free things, Microsoft has announced that the company will be extending the promotion and that it will become an “ongoing benefit for Xbox Live Gold Members on Xbox 360,” according to a recent post on Xbox Newswire.

According to a few stats, surprisingly enough, Xbox Live Gold subscribers have already accumulated 120 million hours played on Games With Gold titles such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Dead Rising 2, and it’s arcade title companion, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. Currently, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can get their hands on a free digital copy of Halo 3 for the remainder of October.

Which title would you like to see become apart of this promotion? Let us know in the comment section below!

Battlefield 4 is filled with stuff – stuff to earn, stuff to unlock, and stuff to show off.

To help wrap your head around it all, developers DICE have put together a comprehensive blog post detailing everything you need to know about Battlefield 4’s reward, scoring and unlock system.

You can catch a summary below of the tweaks and changes DICE is making to Battlefield 4’s systems, but we recommend heading over to the official Battlefield Blog for even more details. It’s a good and interesting read.

Reward and Unlock Summary

RANKS

  • Earned at set scores total in multiplayer, goes from Rank 1 to 100.
  • Ultimate goal: Reach Colonel 100.

RIBBONS & MEDALS

  • 45 Ribbons, tied to one Medal each.
  • 45 Medals, tied to one Ribbon each.
  • Example: Attack Helicopter Medal – Receive 50 Attack Helicopter Ribbons.

SERVICE STARS

  • Shows dedication in specific areas.
  • 130 unique Service Stars earnable.
  • Each can be obtained 100 times, for a total of 13,000 attainable Service Stars.
  • Example: Stealth Jet Service Star – Reach the end of the Stealth Jet unlock tree.

ASSIGNMENTS

  • Multi-layered tasks to perform.
  • 45 multiplayer Assignments available, divided into Bronze, Silver, Gold.
  • Rewards include dog tags, vehicle paints, and weapons.
  • Example: Assault Combat Basic – Reach Rank 10, get 7 kills with Assault Rifles, get 11 Heals with Medkit.

SCORING

  • Score is directly related to ranking up and gaining new weapons, gadgets, and accessories, this is where the foundation for the online career is set in place.
  • Now, as soon as you attempt to capture a flag or arm an objective, the points will start ticking into your account, even if the overall attempt might fail.
  • In Obliteration, you’ll be granted quite a large sum of points for doing pivotal actions like running with the bomb, arming it at an objective, or killing the enemy bomb carrier.
  • Scoring in itself is one of the major ways for Commanders to verify that they are making a critical impact in their team’s struggle on the Battlefield.
  • A new concept in Battlefield 4 is that of KILL ASSIST COUNTS AS KILL.
  • Performing team actions within a squad will net you score towards your own progression, but will also benefit the entire squad.

UNLOCKS

  • Weapons, gadgets, and accessories are awarded to you for using items from the same family in multiplayer.
  • Unlocks are not tied to the class you play. Killing, assisting and suppressing with a weapon will give you more unlocks from the same weapon class.
  • The default weapons and vehicles will be starting with a few essential unlocks already from scratch to make sure the fight is balanced no matter when you join the game – right at launch or later

BATTLEPACKS

  • Battlepacks are randomized bundles of content that are awarded at certain Ranks.
  • At certain ranks, you’ll get a handful of items, but you’ll never know exactly what you’ll get or in what order.
  • Depending on your actual Rank, you’ll be awarded a Battlepack of either Bronze, Silver or Gold Rank.
  • Items in Battlepacks include things like weapon accessories, weapon paints, vehicle paints, soldier camos, dog tags, XP boosts, and unique knife designs.
  • The weapon accessories earnable in Battlepacks are not game-changing in any way, as they are simply cosmetic variants of accessories you can already unlock via the normal weapon progression.

Definitely some cool tweaks to the reward, unlock and scoring system. What are some of your favorite points?

GTA Online Patch 1.04 Now Available, Fixes Bugs and Nerfs Most Missions’ Payout By Half

As Rockstar promised earlier this month players can now expect to be greeted in GTA Online with the option to download patch 1.04 on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms as of today. The patch is said to address the following issues:

Patch 1.04 Notes

  • Fixes numerous issues that were causing vehicle loss and/or loss of vehicle mods
  • Fixes an issue where the incorrect car is replaced when choosing to replace a car in a full garage
  • Fixes an exploit allowing players to sell the same vehicle multiple times
  • Fixes an issue that caused personal vehicles to be duplicated
  • Fixes an issue where some players were unable to pay utility bills on an owned apartment or house
  • Fixes an issue where players were not getting Crew invites in-game
  • Fixes an issue where the starting point for the tutorial race was not appearing
  • Fixes issues with joining Jobs from within a player-owned garage
  • Fixes issues with players getting stuck while using playlists
  • Fixes additional issues causing black screens, long load times, and players getting stuck in the sky cam
  • Adds details in the UI to clarify that characters created while Rockstar cloud is unavailable are temporary (non-saved)
  • Adds changes to the character creator to make better-looking default characters with the “random” option
  • Players now only lose a maximum of 500 GTA$ upon death in Freemode

Unfortunately, and also not listed in the notes above, this patch appears to nerf the pay rate of a majority of missions in half, making buying that car/apartment you had your eyes on that much more of a grind, unless of course you’re willing to fork over some cash to buy some GTA$.

For the full list of effected missions, the folks over at GTAforums have compiled a comprehensive list of what missions’ pay rates have been cut:

  • “Stick up the Stickup Crew”
  • “Sinking Feeling”
  • “Water the Vineyard”
  • “Stocks and Scares”
  • “Mixed up with Coke”
  • “Blow Up II”
  • “Chasers II”
  • “Flood in the LS River”
  • “Check Out Time”
  • “Gassed Up”
  • “Editor and Thief”
  • “Crank up the Volume”
  • “Rooftop Rumble”
  • “War and Pieces”
  • “Violent Duct”
  • “Judging the Jury”

Also according to the forums, this patch seems to have added a malicious bug which will delete your entire garage if you happen to get disconnected from the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live. This bug can also be triggered by accepting any mission invites from your friends.

We’ll let you know ASAP if we hear from Rockstar regarding the tweaks.

GTA Online – Rockstar To Implement NPC Missions In ‘Job Screen’ In The Near Future

Those who have been enjoying GTA Online might find themselves disliking Rockstar’s implementation of the job screen that appears once you’ve completed an activity or a mission.

In response to feedback, the studio has announced that they will be implementing missions from Gerald, Martin and the rest of the NPC’s who are capable of giving jobs in the post-job screen, according to a recent post from Rockstar. The update should allow players to transition into some of their more preferred jobs upon completing a previous mission.

Unfortunately, no ETA was given as to when you can expect this change to happen, but there’s a good chance that the tweak will launch alongside patch 1.04, which is scheduled to be released very soon. The patch will also see the first of two deposits of GTA$ 250,000 in to your in-game bank account as a part of Rockstar’s stimulus package.

Which NPC missions is your favorite so far? Let us know in the comment section below!

DICE Shares Battlefield 4 Improvements Based On Beta Feedback

Insisting that the Battlefield 4 beta that took place during the first half of this month on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was an actual “beta” and not just a glorified “demo”, developers DICE have shared their learnings from the experience and outlined a few of the changes they will be implementing before the game’s release later this month.

Fortunately, there are points here to make both PC and console users quite happy, as DICE will be improving PC frame rates by reducing CPU usage as well as giving console players a few more controller options to play with than the beta allowed. There are, of course, a number of balancing fixes outlined in the notes below as well.

[youtube id=”wqahQzSgVNY” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Check out the changelog via the official Battlefield Blog:

Low frame rate/stuttering

PC players may have experienced trouble in the Beta getting the game running at a good frame rate. Rest assured that we’re using the information we received to optimize the performance for the launch of the game. We also released three game client updates and a number of game server updates during the Beta to address some of these issues and to gather more information to ensure a smoother launch.

Stuck on loading screen

We have identified some of the reasons why players, mainly on PC, were getting stuck on the loading screen and are currently working around the clock to decrease the rate at which this occurs. The latest PC patch for the Beta helped for some players and we are confident we will be able to minimize this issue for launch.

High CPU usage during the Beta

CPU usage could sometimes skyrocket for dual, quad and six-core processors. We identified some of the reasons and released three patches with fixes that went live during the Beta, to address the problems. This was a true Beta, and as such all the crash reports that were generated during this period will actually help us make a better game.

Controller layouts (X360/PS3)

We’ve increased the available controller options in Battlefield 4, including the new controller layout and multiple alternatives that we hope will make you feel right at home. If you’re more comfortable with the controls from Battlefield 3, we’ve got you covered. Just by bringing up the options menu, you can choose the “Legacy” layout, which is similar to that in Battlefield 3.

Empty server listings (X360/PS3)

While in the Server Browser you may have seen lists of empty servers. By changing the filter options, you’ll be able to find populated servers that you can join. You can also use the “Quick Match” function to quickly get into the action.

The elevator catapult (All platforms)

Although an interesting concept, elevators were never designed to act as a catapult or teleporter. The bug where the elevator button would catapult you up into the air is fixed for the final game. But we did enjoy all the crazy videos you’ve posted. Thanks!

Gameplay balancing

We are still balancing gameplay, and in true DICE fashion will continue to do so well after the release of Battlefield 4. Below are just some of the gameplay changes based on your feedback that we’re making in time for the launch of the game.

Infantry Changes
  • Fixed how the player only receives a single local damage sound effect if he or she was the victim of a quick, clean kill.  The sound and camera impact effect had too long a cool down between hits. This should improve the responsiveness of being killed and taking damage.
  • Reduced the fire rate of the AK12 in burst from 1000rpm to 750rpm. The rate of fire was too high when combined with the low recoil of the weapon, making it more powerful than intended in burst mode.
  • Tweaked the compensator and muzzle brake so they’re properly less accurate in sustained automatic fire.
  • Reduced and rebalanced full auto accuracy based on rate of fire for all automatic weapons to balance low ROF weapons. Low ROF weapons were remaining accurate long enough to get easy kills outside of their intended optimal range.
  • Increased the default throw distance of the portable ammo and med packs. This makes it easier to throw these packs to teammates.
  • Portable ammo packs now reload 2 magazines of bullets instantly and up a total of 4 magazines per pack over time. The player must stay on top of the ammo pack in order to benefit from all of the ammo reloading. Grenades, RPG’s, and other explosive launchers do not benefit from the instant reload function of the Ammo Pack.
  • Increased the muzzle flash of the 25mm and 40mm launchers to make their threat position more visible.
  • Fixed an issue where the knife stab didn’t align with the kill event.
  • The revive time has been increased from 7s to 10s.
Vehicle Changes
  • Fixed some descriptions of weapons for vehicles that incorrectly described the function of the weapon.
  • Increased the damage of the Stinger and IGLA to 3 hits to kill attack choppers (was 25%, now 35%).
  • Increased the speed of all TOW guided missiles to 75m/s from 50m/s so they can catch-up to fast vehicles like the Quad bike.
  • Increased the sustained fire accuracy of the Coaxial LMG on armored vehicles because it was underpowered.
  • Reduced the damage the 40mm and 25mm infantry weapons do to armored vehicles to highlight their anti-infantry role.
  • Reduced the damage main gun on the IFVs against other armor to highlight their primarily anti-infantry role.
  • Fixed an issue where the tank main gun did not correctly hit the center of the crosshair at all times.
  • Multiple options are now available for controlling how your vehicles steer with a joystick on all platforms, as well as improved the responsiveness of steering while accelerating.
Locking Weapon Changes
  • RPG7 and SMAW can no longer lock on to Laser Designated Targets. It was inauthentic and not balanced.
  • Fixed some projectiles not warning vehicles when they were fired on a Laser Designated target. Reduced the lock on distance for RPGs, SMAW, and MBT LAW missiles to 350m from 500m. This gives the IGLA the clear long range AA role for soldiers, and keeps the team play element of Laser Designation.
  • All Laser Designated missiles now do a maximum of 90% damage to Attack and Scout helicopters (down from 100%). This was done to give helicopters a chance to use their Fire Extinguisher countermeasure even against Laser Designated weapons.
General Changes
  • The kill string in the score log now appears sooner, making the UI more responsive to a kill event.
  • The aim assist on X360/PS3 has been tweaked to be more consistent at all ranges. The assist was over powerful at close range, and not powerful enough at medium range. Players should now find that close combat requires much more player input and the snap to a target is far less forgiving. At medium range the player should experience a bit more assistance tracking targets, but generally still reduced aim assist effectiveness.
PC Specific Changes
  • Fixed a string in On Foot PC key bindings that should have read “CROUCH (TOGGLE) / PRONE (HOLD)”.
  • Removed an unused “Underslung” key binding on PC, the “Select Gadget 1″ key binding now controls both of these actions as expected.
