The Last of Us: Abandoned Territoies Map Pack Review

Let’s just get straight down to the point; if you liked the original maps, then you’re going to love these ones.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Naughty Dog are amongst the most talented developers today and without sacrificing any aspects of the core experience, they have pushed the multiplayer for The Last of Us even further.

The Abandoned Map pack comes with four new maps, all of which are excellently designed and push the high intensity tactical tension that the originals were known for. In comparison, these maps are far more deadlier due to the amount of covered that can be taken and how much larger they feel. Use of stealth has really become a huge emphasis, and going at it alone will only get you killed. You or an enemy can easily flank one another, though that goes without saying that a rifleman isn’t perched up high above with a bird’s-eye view. The tension has never felt greater with these new maps.

The Maps

Bookstore

[youtube id=”AwkCsvxudFo” width=”618″ height=”378″]

This one is probably my favorite, just due to the way it’s structured. The Bookstore is plotted right in the middle of a city, and in terms of scale, the level feels condensed due to the large surrounding buildings. Inside the bookstore players can battle it out from high above or down below. Either way the amount of cover can surely change the flow of a battle. In my very first match, as seen above, you can clearly see that with the right amount of skills and the excellent use of cover, a losing team could easily triumph over the winning side.

Suburbs

[youtube id=”NzCHnG7HMPM” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Based on one of the most memorable moments of the single-player campaign, Suburbs takes place in a simiar small town. The streets are filled with cars, while the sides of the road feature houses with multiple stories. Out of all the maps, I have to say this is probably the most unique one considering how lively, yet abandoned it feels. Plant life has taken a liking to the location and has grown far beyond their normal reach. Buildings are covered in moss, the grass is tall, and every now and then a dust storm picks up in the middle of the match, adding a “dynamic” feel to the battlefield. It gives you that “50’s” vibe do the high contrast color and how the homes look and feel old fashion with all their contents left behind.

Bus Depot

[youtube id=”piJQTGotaGU” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Probably the only map I am  disappointed with. Unless I am missing something, we were promised Giraffes moving in the background. WHERE ARE MY GIRAFFES!! No, but seriously, if anything, this map feels more like Bill’s Town meets Checkpoint. That doesn’t necessary mean that it’s a bad map – far from it, in fact. I am just saying that it feels “less” new than the other ones. The one thing that Bus Depot does have to offer over the other maps is the thoughtful sound design. The layout is great, but you never really notice the beauty of this map until you stop to listen to what it has to offer. You can hear animals chirping in the background (maybe the Giraffes?), along with a random dog barking. Outside of the map is a city, yet it’s been completely over taken by the wildlife. Despite the absence of actual animals roaming the map, the sounds emulates that feeling that you are indeed surrounded by wildlife.

Hometown

[youtube id=”JvscsPO59Uc” width=”618″ height=”378″]

“Hometown” revisits the epilogue in the story mode. Some time has passed since the outbreak and it appears that refugees have taken a liking to this small town. Defenses have been placed in a condensed area in the center of town. My gripe with The Last of Us’ original selection of maps was that there were only two night maps, one of which (Downtown) is usually skipped during the map voting process. So it’s great to see another night map like Hometown, especially since it offers an eerie feeling with the abandoned remnants of the tenants that lived there. Roaming the map and finding small hiding places where someone possible slept, or even seeing lanterns around are all nice touches. Even some of the buildings are on fire from the chaos that ensued in the Single-player.

Overall, these maps are a welcome addition considering how well designed and immersive they feel. If you are on the fence about buying this, I highly suggest it and would even go as far to say, ‘buy the season pass.’ There’s no doubt after getting my hands on this first DLC pack that the guys over at Naughty Dog are going to continue to produce great DLC for The Last of Us. The antics are rising as they continue to supply us with one of the best, intense, tactical multiplayer experiences yet. Be on the look out for the next DLC, which is set to launch sometime before the end of this year.

PlayStation 4 Day One Update Detailed

Those taking home a PlayStation 4 when it launches next month can look forward to an day-one update to for the next-generation console. According to Sony, will add basic functions to the PlayStation 4 such as party chat and the ability to record your gameplay.

Thankfully, this update won’t take long to download and install as it’s only 300 mb big, so those who are very eager to jump online and partake in a multiplayer session in your anticipated PS4 title won’t have to wait too long.

For the full details on what the day one update for the Playstation 4 entails, feel free to view the notes below courtesy of  the PlayStation Blog:

Day One PlayStation 4 Update

Remote Play

Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link (Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home). We anticipate that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play. The latest PS Vita system software version, to be released soon, will be required to use PS4 Link.

Second Screen

Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Record, take screenshots, and upload gameplay effortlessly

The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game – the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

Broadcast and spectate gameplay

The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Play as you download

This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

Multi log-in

A maximum of four users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multiplayer game together on a single PS4 system.

Party (Voice chat)

By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

Face recognition and voice commands

Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features; please refer to PS4′s online manual for recognizable voice commands.

Background music player

Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music.

Online Multiplayer

PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

Blu-ray Disc and DVD player

Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.

Unfortunately, there will be some features that won’t make the cut for the day one update, such as suspend/resume mode which is a feature that keeps the PS4 in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game.

Update

According to President Shuhei Yoshida, you’ll still be able to play single player game as you download the update in the background.

PlayStation 4 is set to release November 15 in North America and November 28 in the European market.

GTA Online – Beach Bum DLC Detailed, Releases Early November Free of Charge, GTA$ Update

Although GTA Online has had a very rough start since its release on October 1, Rockstar is getting ready to roll out some special in-game events and add-on content very soon as they continue working to make the online experience as stable as possible.

According to Rockstar, you can expect the first add-on content update for Grand Theft Auto Online, the “Beach Bum Pack”, as soon as early November. It will add new customization options such as new tattoos, hair styles and more. It will also add new action-packed Gang Attacks, Survivals, Last Team Standings, Parachutes, Deathmatches and Races that will have you bloodying up the waters and coastlines of the finest beach resorts across Los Santos and Blaine County.

Furthermore, the Beach Bum Pack is also set to include a few beach-themed vehicles and weapons that not only can be used in multiplayer, but can also be brought into the single player portion of Grand Theft Auto V. In addition to the Beach Bum Pack, Rockstar has also been hard at work with the GTA Online’s content creator, which the first part of it is set to make it’s debut sometime this Fall.

If you’re short on cash, you won’t have anything to worry about if you want to get your hands on these upcoming add-ons or any add-on content that Rockstar will release for GTA Online as they will all be available free of charge to everyone.

Players can also look forward to the studio rolling out Social Club Weekends that are set to start in the month of November. The events will feature special rewards and bonuses such as limited edition in-game event crate drops to in-game discount specials.

But, to address the elephant in the room, which is the first deposit of GTA$250,000 into the accounts of those who’ve logged into GTA Online during the month of October, Rockstar has revealed that the delay is due to issues with player progression not saving. They have made the statement that they want to get some more tweaks and fixes into the game sometime next week before they deposit the first half of the GTA$500,000 stimulus package that was promised a few weeks ago.

What sort of add-on content would you love to see in GTA Online? Let us know in the comment section below!

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls – Mystic Artisan And New Weapon Enchantments Detailed

Diablo 3’s first expansion pack, Reaper Of Souls, will add an entire new and the new ‘Paladin’ character class, as well as a number of additional features when it releases on the PC and PlayStation 4 in the near future. However, eager fans have something new to look forward to.

recent post by Blizzard details a new feature of the Reaper Of Souls expansion: the addition of an new artisan ally, Myriam Jahzia, who’s capable very unique abilities such as enchanting your rare or legendary items to be more powerful by re-rolling one attribute of your choice.

Be cautious, as not all attributes are eligible to be re-rolled. However, you can re-roll an eligible attribute as many times as you wish in order to make that perfect item you’ve been searching for. Once you have, that will be the only attribute that you can re-roll. If you’re feeling a little buyers remorse from the new attribute that you implemented, Myriam does offer to put back the previous attribute that you replaced.

Myriam also has the ability to change the appearance of an item of your choice, thanks to the new Transmogrification feature, that is if you have unlocked the appearance.

Luckily, unlocking appearances for your items to morph into isn’t much of a hassle as it solely depends on your Mystic level. Also, much like other special items throughout Diablo 3, any items that undergoes either of the new enhancements will be binded to your account, meaning friends or anyone else won’t able to pick it up or use it.

A small glimpse of the selection you have to morph your pants into
A small glimpse of the selection you have to morph your pants into

Much like the previous artisans found in Diablo 3, Myriam’s services does comes with a small fee, such as certain crafting materials and the amount of gold necessary to either enchant or morph an item of your choice.

Note: Legacy items (items that were picked up before the expansion goes live) won’t unlock a unique appearance.

At the moment, Reaper Of Souls is currently slated to release on the PC and the PlayStation 4 platform with no known release plans for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions.

Killzone: Shadow Fall Significantly Cuts Down on Loading Times, Requires 7.5 GB Install Before Playing

Killzone: Shadow Fall developers Guerrilla Games have confirmed the game’s size on the PlayStation 4 to weigh in at 39.7GB, slightly lower for versions not needing additional language files.

While that may seem like a hefty install size, you’ll only need to download 7.5GB of it on to your PS4 before playing.

This is using Sony’s PlayGo system, which Guerrilla’s technical director Michiel van der Leeuw told EuroGamer will get fans playing the game much quicker than possible with current generation hardware.

“The bulk of it is textures,” he says. “I think we’re probably a lot larger than the other cross-generation games, because we have no assets that have been made to a lower spec.” Commenting on the game’s more open level design, he also mentions, “the surface area, I’m just guessing here, must be five to 10 times bigger than Killzone 3 was.”

Sure, you may be able to start playing the game quicker, but what about load times? Luckily, the studio has you covered if, like Michiel, you also hate the seemingly never ending loading screens that plague most modern games.

“To me, that’s still something that fills my heart with joy when I see it. You insert the disc and go straight to menu,” he explains. “People here worked very hard… We had to ask legal and Dolby, the epilepsy warning stuff, the logos from Havok – we had to negotiate with them that we could put it in the credits and not the title screen… All the rules are built around the previous generation. I’m really happy that we’re one of the first ones in, and I hope it’s an example that people are going to follow.

“I get as annoyed by all these screens as you do. I’m 36, I don’t have a lot of time to game, when I do I don’t want be distracted by things that have nothing to do with playing the game… We came from a day and age with a cartridge, you stuck it in and like, ‘bleep!’, and you were playing the game. And slowly that has degenerated into experiences which are more beautiful and big and prestigious, but they feel… heavy. To me, it’s about feeling. The feeling of something that, you say play and it starts to play – it feels qualitatively beautiful.”

Be sure to catch Killzone: Shadow Fall’s gorgeous story trailer if you haven’t yet, and don’t forget to pick the game up along side your PlayStation 4 this November 15.

Will you find  Professors Vlads camp and make use of his new inventions  or take your chances with Salvation City? The choice is yours.

Those still living and breathing have learnt to adapt to the fresh hell they now call home. Across the world , survivors are gathering resources to not only survive but rebuild their lives. Battlefield 4 “Flood Zone” Gameplay Incoming This Friday, Xbox One and PS4 to Follow

It looks like eager Battlefield 4 fans will not only be able to look forward to some brand new gameplay of one of the game’s more recently introduced multiplayer maps, Flood Zone, but also a first peak at Battlefield 4 running on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

You may remember the urban-set, flood-able map from an earlier developer demonstration with EA’s FTW, as well as from a few short clips from some of the game’s multiplayer trailers.

[youtube id=”UXK_AJjyXr0″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

According to YouTube personality JackFrags, incoming footage of the new map can be expected by this Friday, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gameplay to follow shortly.

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 8.25.58 AM

We can also confirm that we’ve received tips from other YouTube personalities regarding incoming footage later this week.

The news is certainly exciting, as the only console footage we’ve managed to witness so far came from shaky, off-screen video from various Battlefield 4 events. This will be the first time we’ve seen Battlefield 4 running on one of the next-gen consoles in high resolution.

You can catch what we’ve seen so far from the PlayStation 4 here and Xbox One here.
