Valve Demonstrates the Steam Controller and It’s Pretty Cool

Late last month, Valve revealed the Steam Controller, a brand new device to work in tandem with the newly announced SteamOS and Steam Machine in an effort to move the Steam experience from the computer room and into the living room.

The controller features two clickable trackpads that employ the use of super-precise haptic feedback and dual linear resonant actuators. The center of the controller is touch-screen enabled and also clickable, making it an ideal input device for more complicated PC titles.

Thus far, we’ve only heard about the controller and seen a few images here and there. So to give you a better look at the odd, yet interesting, piece of hardware, Valve has put together a video demonstrating prototype controller in action in a number of titles, including Portal 2, Civilization V and other games. The segment showcasing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is rather impressive, as it demonstrates just how precise the Steam Controller really is, even with out auto-aim.

[youtube id=”eeAjkbNq4xI” width=”618″ height=”378″]

This is the same controller that will ship with the 300 Steam Machine units being sent to beta testers in the near future.

So, let us know what you think so far! Looks pretty cool, right? Stay tuned for more incoming demonstrations.

Killzone: Shadow Fall – Introducing The Scout Class

With about a month to go until Killzone: Shadow Fall releases, Guerilla is slowly releasing more and more information on the PlayStation 4 exclusive. Having covered the first playable class, the Assault Class, in our last post, we move on to the Scout Class.

Prefer stealth over strength? This is the class for you. The Scout Class provides players with the edge to be a strong force at distances while remaining stealth from enemy fire. The primary ability for Scout Players is of course, the Cloak ability. Seen in previous Killzone titles, Cloaking gives you the ability to go invisible. There are drawbacks however, as this ability isn’t fully enhanced unless holding a combat knife. Larger weapons will disrupt and limit this effect. No worries, as most advanced and talented Scout players will not be seen until it’s too late.

In addition to the primary Cloak ability, Scout players can choose from one of the following secondary abilities.

TACTICAL ECHO

The Tactical Echo ability lets Scout players send out a radar pulse that temporarily highlights all enemy troops and automata within range – even other Scouts using the Cloak ability. This information is then relayed to allied HUDs and radars.

EMERGENCY TELEPORT

Based on the same technology that lets Spawn Beacons to teleport troops into battle, the Emergency Teleport ability allows Scout Players to teleport to a random part of the map when they run into trouble. However, the teleportation device has a lengthy recharge time.

STUN DRONE

The Stun Drone ability deploys a flying combat drone that waits in an area until it detects an enemy nearby. When attacking, it flies directly at the enemy and detonates an E-Pulse that temporarily blinds and stuns them.

Scout players can go in alone, but knowing which ability to choose from and how to effectively use that ability will be a thing to master. Notice anything here that concerns you? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to MP1st as the Support class will be introduced in the near future.

Battlefield 4 – Spectator Mode In Detail

Something new to the Battlefield franchise, Assistant Producer Daniel Matros and Junior Gameplay Designer Dennis Brännvall detail Spectator Mode, a brand new feature shipping with Battlefield 4 this fall that DICE hopes will facilitate a more competitive scene and allow video makers to work their magic much easier.

On PC and next-gen consoles, not only can games of Battlefield 4 consist of up to 64 players plus 2 commanders, but up to four spectators will be able to join in on the action as well.

“Once inside Spectator Mode, you can observe the matches in four different views: First Person, Third Person, Tabletop and Freecam View,” reads the latest bog entry. “Each view comes with its own merits, and our goal is for players to find the perfect views for the situation at hand – and to easily switch between them.”

View Modes

Tabletop View

tabletop-view1

Similar to Commander Mode. Includes UI with icons for starting points, players, vehicles, etc. Can select any player or vehicle from here to view in picture-in-picture mode.

First-person and Third-person View

BF4_Spectator_1P

BF4_Spectator_3P

Allows you to take a closer look at the action surrounding a particular individual to either see what he or she is seeing, or view the player in a more cinematic way.

Freecam View

BF4_Spectator_FreeCam

Five different cameras to switch between due to large map sizes, which are placed at certain locations by default, but can be moved. Great for movies.

User Interface

The user interface in Spectator Mode features controls for switching between the various view modes as well as between different players. You’ll also see every player in the squad you are currently spectating, where the five Freecam cameras are, the score for the two teams, the remaining time and the objectives. There are also squad bars on the sides of the screen indicating a squad member’s health and kit choice. Lastly, the Player Card displays a player’s current weapons, attachments, gadgets and vehicle customizations.

Of course, players will be able to remove layers of Spectator Mode for a more cleaner look, or be able to completely remove any UI whatsoever in order to enjoy a more cinematic look at the Battlefield.

eSports

“While no one can say exactly when, we at DICE are convinced that e-sports will someday become the most popular sport on the planet, and we’d like Battlefield to be one of the games that makes that happen,” reads the blog entry. DICE hopes that the broadcast-friendly features of Spectator Mode will help Battlefield 4 take a big step into the competitive scene.

With this in mind, extra care was taken into making sure the mode made it into “all game modes, all maps”, regardless of server player count.

So, what will you be using Spectator Mode for when Battlefield 4 drops this October 29?

Incoming GTA Online Update Addresses Character and Progress Loss and More

An incoming GTA Online patch, different to last night’s hot fix which removed the Quick Replay function and tweaked the monetary gain of a particular popular mission, will address the unfortunate character/progress loss a number of players have been experiencing.

CORRECTION: last night’s “hotfix” and today’s “patch” are one in the same. Below are the patch notes that were unavailable in our earlier post.

“A new title update to address the reported issues of game progress loss in GTA Online as well as other technical fixes, tweaks and enhancements is now available for PlayStation 3, and we expect it to be available by tomorrow at the latest for Xbox 360,” writes Rockstar Games in the latest Newswire post.

“This title update will resolve the cause of players losing their gameplay progress except for some specific instances where players purchase a vehicle and the save does not occur due to a cloud save failure. A fix for that particular issue is being worked on and we will provide an update as soon as we know when this will be resolved.”

GTA Online PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360Patch – October 9/10

  • Fixes multiple issues causing character deletion or other loss of progress
  • Fixes issues causing infinite loading, infinite sky cams, and missing interface options between jobs
  • Fixes an issue causing the “replay” option to be locked out on certain jobs
  • Fixes an issue where a player would become stuck in the mod garage when respraying a Sanchez motor bike
  • Fixes an issue where the Player became stuck inside Los Santos Customs during Online tutorial flow.
  • Fixes an issue causing the loss of guns and ammo
  • Fixes issues causing GTA races ending early because of players spawning too far ahead
  • Fixes issues in Last Team Standing where sessions would not progress past the lobby
  • Fixes issues with network errors when joining Last Team Standing using Quick Job
  • Added clarifications around when a player is using a temporary character in GTA Online during Rockstar Cloud server outages
  • Adjusts the monetary penalty for being killed in a One on One match

Rockstar also notes that, in the meantime, should you ever come across this notification: “Rockstar Cloud Servers are unavailable”, do not attempt to “Retry” nor create a new character in order to play GTA Online. Instead, exit to Story Mode and re-enter GTA Online through the menu in Story Mode.

GTA Online – Latest Hotfix Removes Quick Restart, Character Loss PSA

Another day, another patch for GTA Online.

Although the latest patch is just a measly 30 mb in size, it will impact GTA Online in a big way as it will remove the quick replay feature (press R2/RT), which made it possible to grind out missions like Violent Duct and Mixed Up With Coke effortlessly.

Speaking of Violent Duct, Rockstar also appears to have reduced or “nerfed” the amount of cash that you receive upon completing the mission. A silent hot fix rolled out that rolled out yesterday reduced the amount cash earned from Violent Duct from 9,000 to 3,000 per completion.

At the moment of this writing, Rockstar Games hasn’t provided official patch notes for the latest update, but the community of GTA Online has reported to be experiencing these changes.

Additionally, Rockstar has also released a PSA regarding the recent issue of lost characters, that reads the following:

If you have previously created a character but see an empty character selection screen when entering GTA Online, please back out to GTAV Story Mode and try re-entering GTA Online through the pause menu (repeat or wait until Rockstar cloud servers are back up). Do not create a new character in the empty slot where your character should be.

If you receive the message ‘The Rockstar Cloud Servers Are Unavailable’, please return to GTAV Story Mode and follow the steps above.  Please do not press “Retry” on the message and do not proceed online with saving disabled, as this may lead to overwriting your existing character.

We apologize for this inconvenience and are working on a permanent fix for these issues

How much cash have you earned so far in GTA Online? Let us know in the comment section below!

Battlefield 4 Beta Gets New Obliteration Game Mode

Battlefield developers DICE are bringing Obliteration to the Battlefield 4 Beta, now open for everyone to join in on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Players logging in to the official Battlefield 4 Beta will now notice the ability to select the “Obliteration” game mode in the server browser search filter.

In the full game, Obliteration is designed for 24 players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, or 32 players on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or PC. Commander mode will be optional. DICE describes it as a “Mad dash in vehicles and on foot to deliver explosives.”

To learn a little more about the mode, check out what the official Battlefield 4 blog has to say:

We call this the ”Battlefield Moments Generator”. One of the two new game modes in Battlefield 4, Obliteration is definitely the most explosive! In Obliteration, a bomb spawns at a random location on the map. Both teams must fight to pick up the bomb, drop it off at one of their opponent’s three objectives, arm it, and destroy the objective. Once a bomb has detonated, the next one randomly spawns in a new location and the chaos starts all over. The game lasts until one team has detonated the other team’s three objectives. Obliteration can be devastatingly quick or a harrowing tug of war depending on how good your team is at staying together and delivering the bomb. Like most other game modes, there is usually also a time limit in place to make sure the match does not go on for too long.

Compared to Conquest, the action in Obliteration tends to be heavily focused on wherever the bomb is located. Since there’s only one bomb at a time, you will often find yourself going from attacker to defender in the blink of an eye. You need to be able to predict enemy movement to defend at the right place at the right time and reclaim the offensive – or intercept the enemy to reclaim possession of the bomb. The constantly shifting playing field from offense to defense is partly inspired by American football – with the detonation of an enemy installation being the Battlefield equivalent of scoring a touchdown.

So, hop on, give it a try, and tell us what you think of the game mode in the comments below!

You can learn about all 7 of the Battlefield 4 game modes that will be shipping with the game right here.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Dedicated Servers ‘Used on Current-Gen, Next-Gen and PC’, According to IW Head

In a recent update, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin outlined a few of the improvements the studio is making to online connectivity in Call of Duty: Ghosts when it launches this fall.

Most notable in his Twitter entry was the mention of dedicated servers on “on current gen, next gen and PC” and that Call of Duty: Ghosts will use a “hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers.”

He also noted “some great new tech in the matchmaking system that will place players in matches that have the best combined overall connectivity performance.”

Check out Rubin’s full update below:

GHOSTS ONLINE CONNECTIVITY UPDATE: I wanted to give a quick update on some of the work that has been done to improve everyone’s online experience. We’ve already mentioned dedicated servers as part of the overall plan to improve connectivity. Dedicated servers will be used on current gen, next gen and PC with Ghosts. And, in order to make sure that people have the best possible experience regardless of platform, location or connection, Ghosts will be using a hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers. So no matter where you are the game will always be trying to give you the best online performance possible. There is also some great new tech in the matchmaking system that will place players in matches that have the best combined overall connectivity performance. Again these are just some of the things that are going into Call of Duty: Ghosts to give players a great online experience. Can’t wait to see you all online.”

We’ve reached out to Rubin for clarification on the prospect of dedicated servers making it to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Other than Rubin’s update, Activision and Infinity Ward have officially confirmed dedicated servers for the Xbox One and PC.

Update

Rubin has clarified that he cannot call out any platforms by name, specifically. Only “current gen next gen and PC.”

DICE Producer on Battlefield 4 eSports : “We’re Going To Make [Battlefield 4] a Sport”

Battlefield 4 Producer Daniel “zh1nt0” Matros explains how the studio behind Battlefield 4 plans to make the game a ‘sport’ and allow competitive gamers to take advantage of the game’s more eSports-friendly features.

Speaking to Matros at the rAge 2013 expo, YouTube personality “Ph4tso” asked where DICE hopes to take competitive play with the launch of Battlefield 4 this Fall.

In answering, Matros highlighted some of the more competitive game modes being featured in Battlefield 4; Domination and Diffuse, and touched on the importance of working with big leagues and the community.

“We’re going to make [Battlefield 4] a sport in the competitive side,” answered Matros. “So, making it a sport means working with big leagues, working with the community on it, working with players, see what they want. We’re bringing out spectator mode – very well sought after – the Domination game mode, Diffuse game mode – perfect competitive game mode – and at the end of the day, the crowd decides what they want to see.”

Matros also clarified that the core competitive Battlefield 4 experience will be 5 vs. 5 offline, but will focus on keeping the core aspects that make Battlefield Battlefield.

“But making it a sport means that Battlefield can’t change from what Battlefield is. So, suppression’s in there, you have big open levels, you have small levels, you have tight urban settings, you have huge landscapes – you can do anything you want. But the sport remains a 5 vs. 5 offline,” he said. “So, offline, 5 vs. 5 – that’s what we’re going for. And we’re just going to feel the crowd, see what the crowd likes, see what the casters like, see what the casters think of the game in general. We had Corey Dunn and Goldenboy FTW casting E3, casting Gamescom. They did an amazing job. And also the amazing team behind this did an amazing job. So, we’re just going to feel the crowd and see where it takes us, but the sport is what we’re going to reach.”

To clarify, suppression has been tweaked in Battlefield 4 to affect those only under fire from weapons like LMGs, not all weapons, as in Battlefield 3.

To boost Battlefield 4’s career in eSports, Xbox is hosting a US vs Europe tournament in London, UK this November, which you can earn the chance to win a trip to. Check out the details here.

What do you guys think of Battlefield 4’s more eSports-friendly direction? Is it something you are particularly interested in?

Thanks, B4d R0b0t, for the tip!

Leaked Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction Achievements and Trophies Suggest Alien Horde Co-Op Mode

An unannounced game mode spotted in a recent Call of Duty: Ghosts trailer is finding itself surrounded by heavy rumor and speculation, as new evidence is suggesting it may be Infinity Ward’s answer to Treyarch’s popular Zombies game mode, featured in previous Black Ops and World at War titles.

A few days ago, Infinity Ward debuted a new Call of Duty: Ghosts trailer showing off the brand new “Squads” feature set. At the 0.24 mark, you’ll notice in the background that an unannounced game mode called “Exctinction” is listed in the top right-hand corner. The option reads, “Play Extinction Online”.

Screen Shot 2013-10-05 at 1.01.25 PM

Screen Shot 2013-10-05 at 1.00.33 PM

Infinity Ward left no clues to indicate what the game mode might entail since then, but a leaked listing of the game’s 9 secret Achievements/Trophies spotted on Exophase gives us more than enough to speculate on.

Achievement/Trophy descriptions like “Escape with all four players”, “Escape 1st time”, “Reach the exfil chopper with 1 minute and 30 seconds or more remaining on the clock” and “Complete all Extinction challenges and escape” all suggest the game mode is co-operative in nature and requires players to survive against unknown enemies, complete challenges, and escape the situation while possibly under a time limit.

“Get 50 kills with the electric fence and fire traps in a single game” indicates the game mode is based on survival while “Make it to the cabin” and “Make it to the city” suggest that the play space might involve various areas that players will need to traverse and push through as the clock ticks.

Not much can be said for the enemies you may be facing, save for the logo that appears clearly on the “Completionist” achievement. If the shape of the skull is to be taken literally, might we have some sort of alien or monster apocalypse on our hands?

Check out the 9 secret Achievements/Tropies for yourself below!

Screen Shot 2013-10-05 at 2.03.22 PM

You can also check out the full Call of Duty: Ghosts Achievement/Trophy list right here.

As it stands, Infinity Ward or Activision have made no announcement or statement regarding the Extinction game mode, so we’ll have to sit tight until we hear something official. Until then, feel free to speculate! What do you guys think this Extinction mode it all about?

Thanks to TmarTn and Drift0r for bringing this to our attention.

What’s not so spoilerific, however, is that the list does indicate the game will indeed feature multiple endings. There are also five multiplayer-focused achievements/trophies which may or may not excite you. Luckily, they don’t seem too hard to accomplish and are tasks you would most likely accomplish through regular play.

If you care to take a gander at the list, I’ve marked three of the spoiler-filled achievement/trophies in red, so you’d be best to avoid them if you wish to keep the story as fresh as possible.
