Steam Machine Hardware Specs Detailed by Valve

Later this year, 300 Steam Machine prototypes running Valve’s recently announced SteamOS will be sent to testers to help facilitate Steam’s transition to the living room.

Valve has announced that the prototype machines will be high-end computers built from off-the-wall PC parts. The recent update also details the specifications and variations of the hardware.

Steam Machine Prototype Specs

  • GPU: some units with Nvidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760 and some GTX660
  • CPU: some boxes with Intel Core i7-4770, some Core i5-4570 and some Core i3
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3 GB DDR5 (GPU)
  • Storage: 1 TB / 8 GB hybrid SSHD
  • Power supply: internal 450 W 80 Plus Gold
  • Dimensions: approx. 12 inches x 12.4 inches x 2.9 inches high

According to the specs, the size of the machine is comparable to the PlayStation 3 slim, which measures in at 11.4 inches by 11.4 inches by 2.6 inches.

Valve’s Greg Coomer mentioned in an update, however, that the Steam Machines releasing in 2014 by third-party manufacturers may differ, “in many cases substantially,” from the prototype models.

Speaking on the aim of the company, he wrote, “We wanted to accomplish some specific design goals that in the past others weren’t yet tackling. One of them was to combine high-end power with a living-room-friendly form factor. Another was to help us test living-room scenarios on a box that’s as open as possible.”

“To be clear, this design is not meant to serve the needs of all of the tens of millions of Steam users,” Coomer continued. “It may, however, be the kind of machine that a significant percentage of Steam users would actually want to purchase — those who want plenty of performance in a high-end living room package.”

The company understands that gamers may not be looking for a rig replacement, but that many users “would like to have a way to bridge the gap into the living room without giving up their existing hardware and without spending lots of money.”

While Valve isn’t quite ready to reveal the final design of the Steam Machine, Cooner writes that a “closer look” at the Steam Controller is on the horizon.

Are you an owner of a powerful gaming rig? If so, does the Steam Machine still appeal to you? We want to know!

Battlefield: Bad Company 3 – The Series Is ‘Coming Back’, According to DICE Creative Director

Digital Illusions CE has a lot on their plate. Not only are they prepping for the biggest launch in Battlefield history, or possibly EA history, with Battlefield 4, but the studio is also knee deep in projects like Star Wars: Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge 2.

While that doesn’t leave much room for anything else, it isn’t stopping the team from thinking about the eventual return of the fan-favorite Battlefield sub-series, Bad Company, which DICE Creative Director Lars Gustavsson is now saying will return at some point, though not any time soon.

Speaking to reporters at a Battlefield 4 event, he said, “My feeling is that I would love to do it. For me, when we started the company with 1942, it was really a work of passion. And then we worked our way through the era of different wars, and I loved them all, like my little babies. When it came to Bad Company, it was creative freedom; don’t take yourself too seriously.

“So I love it. I want to see it again. Whether it can happen [right] now with the newly announced Mirrors Edge 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront… but we’ll see.”

“But trust me, the Bad Company [team] isn’t forgotten, they are just on a very long vacation,” he continued. “So they are out there, they’re coming back.”

Battlefield: Bad Company originally debuted in 2008 with a follow up, Bad Company 2, in 2010. Many would argue that both Bad Company 1 and 2 were what shot the series into the FPS spotlight, gaining the attention and interest of the massive console audience.

After a return to the core series with Battlefield 3 in 2011, a large portion of the franchise’s fan base expected a Battlefield: Bad Company 3 announcement but, instead, were met with DICE’s decision to continue pushing the core series forward with Battlefield 4.

In the light of recent discoveries, it looks like not all hope is lost.

GTA Online Microtransactions Disabled Until Online Servers Are Fully Functioning

By now, you’ve heard and probably experienced severe issues in the highly anticipated GTA Online which launched only yesterday. With Rockstar’s cloud service being down out, many players couldn’t start some online missions.

In the midst of this problem, Rockstar has recently disabled the microtransaction packs of Grand Theft Auto V according to a recent Rockstar NewsWire post which states the following:

For the time being and until we have been able to get everybody access to GTA Online and things are running smoothly, we have disabled the option of purchasable GTA$ cash packs. All of these initial technical issues will be ironed out as soon as we can. Please know that the entire team here at Rockstar and all of our relevant partners are and will continue to be working around the clock to get the experience to be as smooth as possible, as soon as possible.

Though those who are lucky enough to get into an online session of GTA Online are still able to earn cash in-game. Additionally, at the moment, Rockstar has been able to successfully restore GTA Online for  people playing on the PlayStation 3 with an Xbox 360 fix to follow soon.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Game Mode Highlight – Blitz

Blitz is a brand new, fast-paced game mode being introduced to the Call of Duty series with the release of Ghosts this November 5. Think of it like soccer, but where the player acts as the ball. It’s an interesting take on an objective game time, one that is sure to fit in to the already hefty roster game modes Call of Duty already boasts.

Today, developers Infinity Ward have released a few new details surrounding the Blitz, and also offer up some tips and strategies for success.

First off, the Setup. Blitz consists of 2 rounds where players switch sides during half-time. Each team houses one goal; a portal that a member of the enemy team must enter in order to score a point.

“To score points, you or one of your teammates must enter the other team’s goal,” writes Infinity Ward in a recent blog update. “Entering a goal awards a single point and instantly teleports the goal-scorer to a different section of the map. A 10-second cooldown is applied to the goal after scoring a point. Nobody can enter the goal during this time.”

Sides switch when the time limit of 10 minutes has been reached, or one team scores 8 points. The maximum amount of points a team can earn is 16.

Now, for some strategies, as seen on the latest blog entry.

Blitz Strategy

Offense

Faster is Better

Speed is your friend. Perks like Marathon (unlimited sprint) and Agility (increased movement speed) leave the enemy players in the dust when rushing their goal. If you find yourself face to face with a defender, Ready Up (weapon is ready faster after sprinting) and Quickdraw (faster aiming) speed up your reaction time to quickly drop out of sprint and defend yourself before scoring the point. If you’re really cutting it close, rush the goal and drop to a knee slide to zip in and avoid incoming shots.

Disrupt Line of Sight

Closing in on the enemy goal, but don’t trust that hidden corner coming up? The Smoke Tactical grenade might just be what you’re looking for. Toss it out and rush in unhindered. Just try not to deploy it too early, as nearby enemies will likely see the smoke and follow up with explosives. You don’t want to be there when that happens.

Bring Your Friends

As with all team-based modes, coordination wins games. While the 10-second cooldown prevents groups from entering the goal simultaneously, it’s still advantageous to stick together. Designate one player to rush in for the point while the others take up posts in the perimeter, fighting off incoming enemies until the goal resets.

Defense

Surprise, Surprise

Once an enemy player gets close to your team’s goal, they’re more likely to throw awareness out the window and rush right for the point. They might make a quick check of the immediate surroundings, but they’re likely more concerned with reaching the goal. Use this to your advantage and set up in vantage points that aren’t easily spotted at first glance.

Minefield

The I.E.D. Lethal equipment and the I.M.S. Assault pointstreak are both highly effective proximity explosives. Set these near key chokepoints leading to your team’s goal and make enemy rushers think twice before blindly racing toward your goal.

Score and Defend

After scoring a point and teleporting away, take some time to defend your own goal. Chances are, you already have other teammates closing in on the enemy goal. If everyone’s attacking, your own will be wide open for the taking.

What’s your take on the new Blitz game mode so far? Are you excited to try it out? You’ll be able to when Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on November 5.

GTA Online Service Being Restored On The PlayStation 3, Possible Xbox 360 Fix

After having a rough launch, Grand Theft Auto Online is returning back to service as multiple reports from across the globe, including us, can confirm that GTA Online has somewhat started working on the PlayStation 3.

PS3 owners from both GTAForum and Reddit have reported that they are finally able to connect and play online with the PlayStation 3 version. Connecting to GTA Online can now be established; however there is still one issue with the very first mission where it will hang on the screen. Our only suggestion is that you go into solo play and hope for the best that you can get the mission started. After multiple attempts and system quitting, I was able to get past this mission. After, I was then able to play normally, but with a few hiccups such as slowdowns and crashes.

Hopefully, the Rockstar patches the first mission up, but otherwise, once you are past that, the Online appears to works. The Online portion of the game for the PS3 version was completely inaccessible yesterday, but now gamers are having a lot more luck today. For you Xbox 360 owners, it seems that the Online has been working since yesterday, but a very small percentage of you guys are still unable to play. Here’s a workaround that might work.

Battlefield 4 Beta – Current Lists of Known Issues

Day one of the exclusive Battlefield 4 beta on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is nearly over, and clearly, the game is not without its issues on all platforms.

Regardless, we hope you are enjoying it and that you are providing feedback to the DICE team in a civilized manner through proper channels like the official Battlefield 4 Beta forum.

If you’ve yet to visit the community over on the new Battlelog, chances are, you’ve no idea what sort of bugs and issues developers behind the beta are aware of. You might be relieved to know that a few of the game’s faults might already be on the chopping block, awaiting a fix.

So, here is a list of known issues that the Battlefield 4 Beta development team is currently looking into:

PC

  • We have received reports of Freezes and Crashes affecting the BF4 Beta client. Our team is currently investigating this matter and we will update you here as soon as we know more.
  • If you are affected by a Freeze or a Crash upon joining a game, and the error message “BF4 Beta has stopped working” appears, please make sure your Windows is fully updated and your Graphic card is running on its latest driver. Alternatively, some players using GeForce drivers were able to fix this by downgrading their driver to an earlier version.
  • We received report of unusually low performances, and are currently looking into that as well.
  • Please note that the Battlefield 4 Beta does not support Win32 and 32 Bit operating systems.
  • Video settings may not be saved after rebooting the game.
  • The tooltip “E” to enter the Venom is visible at a 400 meter distance.

Xbox 360

  • Player stats in Battledash may not match the stats displayed on Battlelog.
  • You may experience an 8 seconds non-interactive pause, when leaving a Multiplayer session or after pressing Start when booting the game.
  • You may be floating if you jump on the bollards.
  • Cruise Missiles may not destroy any vehicle dropped by Vehicle Drop.
  • The requirements for unlock criteria may not be displayed.
  • Two flag icons may appear overlapping on each other at each flag point.
  • The first attachment of any weapon that is not unlocked, will be the only attachment shown for the first unlocked weapon.

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

  • If you’re disconnected from the EA Servers, the Main Menu tiles remains fixed in the front end.

PlayStation 3

  • When you choose to quit during the EOR, you may be able to see “underworld” for 1 second.
  • The camera transition before the EOR screen is under water.
  • If you destroy an enemy tank near the Flag A, it may triggers the map’s Mini-Levolution event.
  • If you quit from the XMB™ menu after the “Press Start” screen, you may experience a forced shutdown.
  • The background screen for the losing team during EOR, is placed “under the game world” for Domination and Obliteration game modes.
  • The Hit Indicator is not present when shooting at enemies.
  • The EOD Bot can’t arm or disarm MCOMs on Rush mode.
  • If you disconnect and reconnect your Ethernet cable while playing, the Game may remain in an endless loading loop.
  • You may not be able to perform a knife takedown on an enemy using the TAW Launcher.
  • If you sign out from PSN while loading into a MultiPlayer server, you may experience an infinite loading screen.
  • In the Soldier Progression menu, you may be able to see upcoming vehicle unlocks that will not be available in the Beta.
  • You may be able to see several Medals, Ribbons, and Dog Tags in the “My Soldier” menu.

EA_Chems writes, “If you are currently experiencing any issue listed above, rest assured that our team is currently looking into it internally.”

Naturally, more will be added to this list over time, but we’ll make sure to update you daily so you can keep track.

Anything in particular that you’ve run into that has not appeared on this list?

DICE Tech Director: Battlefield 4 ‘Graphics At Release Will Be Better and/or Faster’

DICE technical director Johan Andersson has assured concerned Battlefield 4 fans that the game will look better at launch.

While it might mostly pertain to the PC version of the game, Andersson confirms that not all graphical options are available in the currently ongoing beta and that performance is not final.

According to him, the game’s visuals will “be better and/or faster” at release.

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 7.36.36 AM

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 10.28.45 AM

He was also able to re-confirm that downscaling and upscaling your performance to better suit your rig will be an important option available to all users on the PC at launch.

Screen Shot 2013-10-01 at 10.26.43 AM

For the console crowd currently enjoying the beta on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, you should take comfort in knowing that, as was the case with Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 will most likely launch with the option to download a high-resolution texture pack, cleaning up those muddy textures you may currently be experiencing in the beta. This has yet to be confirmed, however.

So, keep positive while in the Battlefield 4 beta, but be sure to report gameplay bugs or tech issues in the official forums.

Guerrilla Games Working On A New IP Outside Of Killzone

Guerrilla Games, best known for their work on the highly acclaimed Killzone franchise, are busy giving Shadow Fall its final touches in prep for its PlayStation 4 release this November 15. But that hasn’t stopped staff members from already moving on to an entirely different project unrelated to the Killzone series.

Eurogamer confirmed in an interview lead designer of Guerrila Games, Eric Boltjes, that the team is indeed working on a new IP.

“I can be true about it, yes. That’s definitely what’s happening right now. I can’t tell you what we’re thinking of but yes,” he said.

“As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don’t want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh.”

“The artists and the coders work the longest, and then QA. But the designers, at some point their work is done. They’re not allowed to touch the game because that changes everything for all other departments.

“So about three to four months before you ship, the designers sit down and think, what can we do for the next one.

“That happened then [with Killzone 3 to Shadow Fall] as well. So, about three years ago we went into that phase. The really tricky part about that phase is not trying to do too much. You have a room full of people and they all have a different idea of what they want to change about the game. They can’t do everything, especially if you only have two-and-a-half years to build it.”

We last reported that Guerrilla Games were working on a new project back in June of 2012, though that was most likely Killzone: Shadow Fall. It’ll be interesting to see what the team comes up with next.

GTA Online – 8 Things To Do With Your Friends, Kifflom!

It’s been two weeks already since Grand Theft Auto 5 launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and although there are still a handful of gamers out there occupied with the single player portion of the game, Rockstar is readying to take the experience to the next level with the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online in only a few hours. So, with so much to do, where does one start?

1. Steal From The Rich, Give To No One

Ah, yes. A Grand Theft Auto game wouldn’t be a Grand Theft Auto game if it didn’t involve stealing. While large bank heists won’t be available day one, you will still be able to rob convenience stores and even rob other players of their money as they roam about. As long as their cash isn’t deposited in a bank, it’d up for the taking. There will be nothing more satisfying than successfully robbing other players of their fortune, and what better way to show the power of your crew off by dominating the world and controlling income.

2. Explore the Depths of The Ocean and Plunder for Lost Treasure

This is the first GTA game to ever allow us to swim underwater and explore the sea floor. There’s bound to be plenty of lost treasure buried deep on the sea floor that’ll net you some major cash. But make sure to watch out for those Great White Sharks, as they’ll surely be lurking, awaiting to prey on you and your group.

3. Storm Fort Zancudo

Why is this fort so heavily fortified in every GTA Game? Either way, getting a group of friends to storm the military base is going to be one fun adventure. Stealing jets, or even cargo planes, or just for the sake of building up a defense from other enemy players – this Fort is going to play a major role in the online mode. Plus, it goes without saying that the Fort remains mostly unexplored with a mysterious elevator in one of the buildings. No one knows where it goes or what’s hidden down there, but perhaps it has something to do with Mt. Chiliad.

4. Solve The Mystery of Mt. Chiliad

For the past two weeks now, GTA Forum members and Redditors have been trying to piece clues together as to what secrets Mt. Chiliad may hold. Alien spaceships have been sighted in multiple locations upon completing the SP with 100%, but despite that, the quests continues to deepen as more and more info is uncovered. Mysterious events may have taken place prior to the events of GTA 5, but guess what? GTA Online happens to be set before GTA V, making it basically a prequel to the game. What better way to solve mysteries than with a pack of friends to help you explore every inch of the map and test out every possible theory. It’ll be interesting to the outcome, considering that mission scripts have been found in the game data, hinting at possible alien-related missions. Though, aliens may not be the only thing players will encounter online…

5. Find Bigfoot

Since GTA San Andreas, Bigfoot has been one of the biggest unsolved cases in the GTA franchise. Though there is supposedly a random encounter with a false Bigfoot (man in costume) in the SP, it still wouldn’t surprise me if the actual thing is in the game, just lurking around in the deep vine forests. We suggest you keep your distance if he does exists, however. There’s no way of telling whether or not he’ll be hostile.

6. Create Your Own Races

This is a new feature in GTA that allows gamers to create their own multiplayer races that others can partake in. Create that dream race you’ve always though of: starting off with some exotic car battles, then taking flight in epic aerial dog fights across the sky. Whatever you desire, it can most likely be created.

7. Show Off To Your Friends

There is nothing more fulfilling than arriving to pick-up your friends in a supped up car. You saved, you customized, and now it’s time to show off your dream vehicle. It brings that “Midnight Club” feel to the online experience and your friends will be jealous of you once they see that rusty tractor of yours.

8. And remember, Kifflom.

Of course these activities are just scratching the surface. What can be accomplished in the multiplayer will most likely be limitless. So, what’s the first thing you plan on doing once Grand Theft Auto Online launches?

New GTA Online Details – Time of Launch, Social Events, Character Customization And More

Rockstar Games has finally released the exact timing of when Grand Theft Auto Online is expected to go live, along with a handful of new details.

According to a recent update from the studio, GTA Online is expected to go live at around 7 AM Eastern Time on October 1, only a few hours away. Players will be prompted to download a small patch, which will then unlock the fourth character from the character selection menu. You can read the full details below with the additional info.

As seen on the Rockstar Social Club:

Access to GTA Online

Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with your copy of Grand Theft Auto V. On October 1st there will be a small downloadable Title Update released on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. Upon installation of that Title Update, direct access to begin GTA Online will be unlocked in your GTAV game menu. You will be able to jump right into GTA Online via the 4th (bottom) slot in your GTAV character wheel. We’ve received many questions asking for a specific confirmation of what exact time GTA Online will be available but of course this is contingent on both Title Updates becoming available on each console’s network. As a general timeframe, we do expect the Title Update to become available on PSN and Xbox LIVE starting around 7AM ET tomorrow morning, and your best bet is to stay tuned throughout the day here at the Rockstar Newswire and by following us on Twitter and Facebook where we will be keeping everyone updated.

When does GTA Online Take Place?

Some people who’ve been playing through Grand Theft Auto V’s Story Mode have been inquiring how the narrative of GTA Online correlates or crosses over. Grand Theft Auto Online is set a few months prior to the events of Grand Theft Auto V’s single player story.

Home and Garage Security

There’s plenty of havoc and treachery you can cause out in the open world of course, but in order to prevent some really annoying “griefing”, we’ve designed house party invitations specifically to be a friendly social affair where players can visit each other’s pads without fear of having them ruined or losing their hard-earned vehicles in the process. If someone invites you into their property, then it is considered a friendly visit and you will not be able to shoot up their place or steal their cars from their garage. By the way, in any given lobby, if you and another player own the same piece of property, you will each be able to enter your own personal instance of that property at any given time. You will also be able to enter each other’s instance of that property if you exchange and accept an invite. This way, multiple instances of ownership of the same property within a lobby can co-exist.

GTA$ and Fair Play

To allay some concerns we’ve heard on this subject, we can assure you that the game is designed such that the option of purchasable GTA$ should not disrupt the playing field – and there are a few mechanics in place to help ensure that. All players still have to rank up with Reputation Points (RP) in order to get access to purchase high-end items.  No one can begin GTA Online and simply spend a lot of money out of the gate to get a leg up. You will have to earn your stripes and play to unlock access to the aspirational clothes, guns and other items. Please also remember that in GTA Online, hustling to afford the finer things by earning GTA$ doing robberies, stick-ups, winning races and other profitable activities is a fun gameplay experience rather than ever being a ‘grind’. As we mentioned on Wednesday, we will constantly tweak all areas of the game to make it play fairer and iron out any balancing problems (while fixing all the other problems we encounter!), but we really need your help in figuring out what those issues are. So please work with us on that!

An Ever-Growing Collection of Jobs

Grand Theft Auto Online is a long-term GTA experience that you can expect to be built-upon, to grow and to evolve in many ways in the coming weeks, months and beyond. As part of that, there will be a massive amount of Jobs available to play over time as we will be regularly adding new ones for you to enjoy. Additionally, you will soon be helping to add content to the game world yourselves, by creating custom Race and Deathmatch Jobs through the Content Creator tool which we plan to release this fall. Grand Theft Auto Online is a collaborative project between Rockstar and all GTA players worldwide, so expect that we’ll effectively be working on it together from day one. As a very small example, the Crew Hierarchies feature that was introduced a few weeks back on Social Club was a direct result of popular fan feedback from last year – and we’ll be looking at the GTA Online community’s feedback, input and ideas constantly to help inform how the game itself will grow and evolve. As mentioned last week, we’ll be looking closely at your feedback emails sent toGTAOnline@rockstargames.com and in the GTA Online Suggestion Box board at the forthcoming Social Club Forums. We’re very much looking forward to welcoming you as active participants in the world of GTA Online starting tomorrow.

The Character Creation System

The hereditary-based character creation system of Grand Theft Auto Online allows for a multitude of options to create your avatar that will then inhabit the online world of Los Santos & Blaine County.  Choose your gender then decide on your mother and father.  From there, you can choose to give one parent genetic dominance or leave them more evenly matched. The choice is yours. Next, you adjust a set of lifestyle variables which help determine your character’s appearance and starting stats. Decide how much sleep he/she gets, how much partying they indulge in, how much honest work versus illegal activity, and more. Essentially, you can adjust the genetics to wind up with a fresh faced lad or lass or a grizzled, haggard degenerate or anywhere in between! You’ll also be able to preview your end result in real time all throughout to ensure you’re satisfied before putting your character on a direct flight to LS. Of course, once you’re out and about in the open world, you can further customize your character with haircuts, clothing and accessories to suit your tastes.

Exclusive Social Club Features

actual_1380327384

In Grand Theft Auto Online, Social Club members get access to weaponry and vehicular unlocks, a whole new suite of Crew features to represent and coordinate with your squad, and special tools to get the most out of Rockstar Jobs and user-created Jobs when the Content Creator tool launches this fall. Check out the updated www.rockstargames.com/V/socialclub for an overview of GTA Online Social Club features including new Crew customization possibilities like Crew colors and Emblem vehicle decals, Crew messaging options, and Open or Closed Crew Sessions. Plus unlocks like the Sawed-Off Shotgun, the Annis Elegy RH8 and the John Marston Parent option to do the Marston family proud in the modern day West. Also stay tuned for info later in October about the very first GTA Online Social Club Events which will have special Event Playlists curated by Rockstar, reserved in-game license plate awards for top players, and more. So, if you haven’t joined, we recommend doing so!

Expect that we’ll be keeping you up to date here at the Newswire tomorrow as the Title Updates become available on PSN and Xbox LIVE. We’re very much looking forward to seeing you and your Crews hit the wide open world of Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA Online tomorrow.

These aren’t the only new details, as Redditor who’s in charge of TheGTAPlace.com recently held an AMA concerning the GTA Online event that took place in New York recently.

Here’s a short summary of what was answered:

  • All clothing and tattoo shops were unlocked in this early build
  • When creating a character you get to pick all four grand parents appearances, which affect show your character looks. Clothing, hair style, and skin color can all be customizable.
  • Weapons require ranking up, since they are locked.
  • Once you reach level 8 you can begin buying property, with a small house costing $20,000
  • Robing stores net you somewhere between $3000 – $6000, though it is balanced and can’t be abused. Shouting into the mic increases the speed of robbery, though be careful because some owners have hidden guns.
  • “Passive Mode” is a mode where players cannot be killed (we assume they can’t kill either) and costs $100-$500 per entry.
  • Cars can have insurance so you don’t have to worry about wrecking your car and losing it forever.
  • Missions need a least two players to start, though some can use up to 8.

The wait is almost over, guys. Did you all do as we said, and schedule tomorrow off? If not, shame on you.
