Xbox One Game DVR Will Record at 720p and 30 FPS

When the Xbox One launches this November, gamers will also be able to record game footage using the console’s built in game DVR.

While you’ll be able to play games like Forza Motorsport 5 at 1080p and 60 frames per second, and while the Xbox One can even support resolutions as high as 4K according to reports from Polygon, Microsoft’s Marc Whitten recently confirmed to IGN that Xbox One’s game DVR will record at 720p and 30 frames per second.

“Game DVR captures beautiful clips at 720p 30 [frames per second],” said Whitten.

He added that “Your clips are stored in the cloud. You’ll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection and when you are looking at gamercards on the system.”

Previously, it was announced that The Xbox One can record the last five minutes of gameplay in a program called Project Upload.

Product Review and Giveaway: The Hoo-rag “Skull Daddy” Face Rag

Perfect for desert journeys, ranching, and paintball, the “Skull Daddy” Face Rag from Hoo-rag offers protection from the elements and a ton of versatility. It also looks pretty cool.

The folks over at Hoo-rag recently sent us a couple “Skull Daddy” Face Rags which feature a design that bares much resemblance to the same sort of mask everyone’s favorite Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 character, Ghost, wore in-game. Hence, its popularity amongst gamers

Screen Shot 2013-08-04 at 11.27.02 AM

Other than looking bad-ass, it can help cover your mouth and nose to prevent dust and dirt from getting into your lungs while out biking, boarding, fishing, playing paintball and whatnot. It’s very comfortable, using a very soft fabric, but is also very durable and extremely versatile.

There are a number of ways it can be worn, which Doug from Hoo-rag would be more than happy to show you in the video below:

[youtube id=”Usiy2tr3FG4″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

The best part is that it the Hoo-rag can be customized with your very own artwork, though the company offers a number of neat designs by default, including the “Skull Daddy” shown above.

We recommend checking out their official website right here if you’re interested in trying some out for yourself. However, if you want to get your hands on a “Skull Daddy” Face Rag for free, be sure to hit up our forums right here, or follow us on Twitter where we’ll be giving one away as well.

EverQuest Next Unveiled, SOE Promises “Something Really Original”

Sony Online Entertainment is bringing back EverQuest in a big way.

EverQuest Next is not only the next evolution within the franchise, but the next evolution within the genre itself, one that does not necessarily fit the current MMORPG mold. Or, at least, that’s what SOE Director of Design David Georgeson claims.

“EverQuest is another point in the triangle,” he recently told IGN. “We’re creating a triangle; it’s not just a line anymore.”

EverQuest Next will take some bold steps in a new direction. It will introduce destructible environments, procedurally-generated quests stemming from independent monster behavior, and a totally revamped crafting system. As IGN author Kay Bailey put it, “In essence, it’s a game where players shape the world together, a sort of massively multiplayer Minecraft with elves, crafting, monsters, and all of the other trappings of a fantasy RPG.”

That sounds really cool to us.

Players will be able to create their own unique experiences within the game by building up and destroying buildings and structures, eventually making every sever in the game a completely different world from the next. Of course, there will be some degree of control, but it sounds like SOE is really giving players a chance to play how they want. Even enemies will also do what they please, as each enemy type has different preferences as to what it is they might be after. Orcs, for example, love gold and will attack locations – like developing cities – where gold is plentiful. Quests are seemingly being replaced by “rally calls”, which act as dynamic events involving any number of players.

Georgeson hopes that this will lead to players developing “a long, detailed history of their character so that when they tell others that story, they actually care, as opposed to, ‘Yeah, yeah, I did that quest.'”

He went on to say that “what we need to deliver with EverQuest Next is something really original, so what we did was tear it down to the bedrock. We pick what we liked, what we didn’t like, and we came up with a list of holy grails that we as designers had always wanted to do, but never had the time or the intestinal fortitude to try before.”

“It’s intimidating, but we’ve been breaking these things down into categories and attacking them one at a time, so that we can polish up what needs polishing before moving on,” he continued. “We’ve also prioritized all of our heaviest risks at the earliest stage to prove that we can get them done. Now we’re past all of the R&D hurtles, and we’re at the point where we’re doing what we know how to do, which is build an MMORPG.”

Elements which have defined the series like crafting will return as well, including some previously featured locations.

EverQuest Next has been in development for over four years now and hopes to fulfill some lofty expectations, hopefully regaining it’s title as the king of MMORPGs. To help move things along, SOE is even employing the help of fans by releasing their internal toolset to the public. They’ll be able to create their own landmarks and could eventually make it into the game.

Check out some of the brand new videos below, courtesy of IGN, and be sure to tell us in the comments what you think! Does EverQuest Next have to potential to finally de-throne World of Warcraft?

Rise of the Triad is out, and it’s Ludicrous (in a good way), sort of

So a small development team by the name of Apogee Software released their baby today, Rise of the Triad, in all it’s early 90s glory

[youtube id=”4NYvnBLLZBY” width=”618″ height=”378″]

For those of you itching for a fast paced, old school arena shooter, THIS is the game to buy, sort of.

With any indie title made on a shoestring budget by a ragtag group of passionate developers, ROTT has it’s fair share of issues, some of which sort of break the game.  Thankfully, Apogee is committed to making sure ROTT is as good as it can be and have promised plenty of post launch support and patches, oh, and FREE DLC.

One of the coolest things about ROTT though is full mod support.  The next major patch (1.1) will include a level editor for making custom Singleplayer and Multiplayer maps, which is very rare for games these day.

Stay tuned to MP1st as I’ll be doing my best to stay on top of ROTT as it’s patched.  Expect a detailed review when Apogee gets ROTT running smoothly.

Rise of the Triad is available on Steam for $14.99, though I’d advise you wait until it’s confirmed to be running (mostly) bug free.

BOSS JEDIZOHAN

I've been a gamer since before most gamers were born. Now a full-fledged member of the PC Master Race, I'm enjoying all the best games from both AAA and Indie developers in glorious 1440p. Praise Gaben and may the Steam deals be ever syphoning funds from your life savings. Subscriber

IW Teases Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer, Dynamic Maps and Player Customization in Current-Gen Version

Call of Duty: Ghost’s global multiplayer reveal is this August 14, but developer Infinity Ward is taking to social media to give you a short and very small tease of what’s to come.

Infinity Ward head Mark Rubin took to Twitter to show off the “First video from [his] new phone” which coincidentally happens to be a shot of Call of Duty: Ghosts “Squads” multiplayer screen.

The video is of low quality (Get a better phone, Mark! Just kidding.), so you’ll have to excuse the blurry image.

Screen Shot 2013-08-02 at 7.28.07 PM

You can check out the actual short clip right here.

In a short Twitter conversation, Mark Rubin also confirmed that dynamic maps and player customization is making it into the current-gen version of Call of Duty: Ghost, despite current-gen limitations.

What do you guys think? It’s a short tease, but we’re excited to learn and see tons more this August 14 in LA.

State of Halo: Is This ‘AAA’ Franchise Being Relegated to the Back of the FPS Pack?

Halo’s popularity reached a fever pitch with the launch of Halo 2 (some would say it was the sole reason for owning an Xbox) and sustained a good chunk of its momentum with the launch of Halo 3 on Xbox 360. However, with the release of Xbox’s most expensive add-on Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Armor Lock Reach, the XBL population began to dwindle more rapidly than previous Halo titles. The precipitous drop-off in population continued with the launch of Halo 4. As of mid-July, Halo 4 rests at #8 on the XBL charts with almost no sign of regaining momentum. A quick perusal of ‘fan-sites‘ has plenty of reasons for the decline of this stalwart franchise ranging from 343 Industries not knowing how to make a proper Halo game to the inclusion of Armor Abilities still ruining the core gameplay of Halo yore. This begs the question: Are we witnessing the demise of the Halo franchise as we know it, or are the concerns overblown?

Comparing where the Halo series is to where it was, we are definitely a long way from the original Xbox days when Halo sat alone at the top. Where Halo 1 defined the console LAN gaming experience, Halo 2 followed it up years later by becoming the online multiplayer boilerplate for other titles to follow (I can hear a few SOCOM diehards vehemently disagreeing, but you’re definitely in the minority). However, no game or series can stay at the top forever. It seems just like yesterday gamers were waiting hand over fist for the next entry in both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series. Market saturation played a major role in the demise of both of them, and to some degree has hurt the reputation of the Halo brand.

Halo 2

I can’t help but feel at the time Halo 3: ODST was conceived, having already conquered the console multiplayer market, Microsoft and Bungie went for a new challenge and attempted to dethrone the defacto single-player franchise at the time, Grand Theft Auto. It was even hyped as a vast open-world experience akin to the GTA series. The final product came nowhere near matching the hype and certainly didn’t justify the $60 price point. Bungie’s vision of an open-world experience consisted of finding dead squadmates (5 in total), ‘flashback’ missions, and an occasional dropship encounter with the Covenant in a drab and dimly lit world. As for that critically praised multiplayer? Pretty much non-existent, with ODST only including a few Halo 3 multiplayer maps (which no one ever played) and the new ‘Firefight’ mode, a multiplayer version of ‘Survival Mode’. While Microsoft and Bungie were trying to conquer the single-player market with Halo 3: ODST, a relatively low-key franchise (in the console circles at least) known as Call of Duty was gaining serious momentum. However, Bungie had one more Halo title waiting in the wings and it seemed their reign of dominance in the multiplayer market would continue.

Well, that was my naive opinion before I played Halo: Reach.

I harken back to this Bungie ViDoc titled Carnage Carnivale. This ViDoc pre-dated the Halo: Reach beta and showcased the new armor abilities. As stated in the video, the beta was meant to collect feedback, find breaks in code, and perform balancing tweaks. Unfortunately for players, their suggestions seemed to fall on deaf ears. The overpowered Armor Lock ability, which is excitedly proclaimed as ‘super powerful’ and ‘insane’ around the 03:45 mark of the ViDoc, made its way to retail release. For the uninitiated, Armor Lock granted temporary but complete invulnerability from EVERYTHING. If you were about to get hit with a rocket, Armor Lock let you live. If you got stuck with a plasma grenade, Armor Lock absorbed the explosion. If someone was about to kill you with the sword, Armor Lock deflected the lunge. On the cusp of being killed? No worries, Armor Lock will give plenty of time for reinforcements to assist. To solely blame Armor Lock for Halo: Reach ‘s failings would be short-sighted. I haven’t even delved into bloom, sprint, and jetpack. Even Reach’s expanded Forge Mode had the unfortunate side effect of making the paid DLC worthless with players voting for custom maps over DLC in matchmaking. To this day, I haven’t played a single map on the Defiant Map Pack in matchmaking. It was quite obvious after playing Halo: Reach for a couple of weeks and seeing the ‘Occupy Halo 3 ‘ posts that it didn’t match up well against Call of Duty.

Halo 3

This past November, Halo 4 was released with a new developer at the helm and some stiff competition from Battlefield and Call of Duty. While the initial population was quite high, it has taken a steep decline in recent months. Part of this can be attributed to the less-than-stellar reception of the ‘casual friendly’ gameplay elements such as ordinance drops and sprint. Spartan Ops, the co-op story mode that would be the new ‘water cooler’, was ultimately a unique but dull experience. The uninspired Crimson Map Pack DLC, created by what I assume are now unemployed map designers, did little to stimulate a sagging population. And yet, despite its shortcomings and modest ranking on the XBL charts, I feel very optimistic for the future of the Halo franchise.

Beginning with Halo 4’s multiplayer, 343 Industries has done a lot of listening and incorporating community feedback into the game. The post-launch vacation may have been a bit too long for some, but there’s no arguing once they got around to making changes, the community has responded positively. It began in February where they rebalanced the Boltshot range. Some still argue that the Boltshot should no longer be a starting weapon, but by and large no one has asked for the range to be reverted. When Forgers wanted a larger space to craft their levels, 343 released Forge Island for free despite Forge creations competing directly with their DLC revenue. After months of testing, the weapon rebalancing update was launched in June making primaries (other than the DMR) useful. Right around the corner, 343 is bringing back Halo 3 favorite ‘The Pit’ with the Champions Bundle DLC. And all the while, 343 has been adding and updating Matchmaking playlists such as Grifball, Action Sack, Multi-Team, and more. Lost in all the backlash, Halo 4 is the best looking X360 multiplayer title with a rock-solid framerate, something Bungie didn’t achieve on the X360 hardware for any of their titles.

On the ‘story-content’ side of things, I liked 343’s take on the Prometheans and found them to be far more interesting enemies than the Brutes. Unlike others out there, I found Halo 4’s story (minus the ending) to actually be quite captivating, mainly because of the constant duress Cortana was under. And while Spartan Ops missed the mark, I applaud 343 for trying something so ambitious and believe they’ll hit paydirt on their second crack at it.

Halo 4

Has Halo lost its edge? A bit — otherwise it would be near or at the top of the XBL charts. The Modern Military shooters rule the roost at the moment, but Halo isn’t disappearing anytime soon. In comparison to titles like Gears of War: Judgement , which can sooner be found at a used game store than the ‘Top 20 LIVE Titles’ , or fatigued franchises like Resident Evil and Final FantasyI’d say Halo is in a pretty enviable spot at the moment. Microsoft appears undeterred by the criticism banking the series is popular enough to warrant another sequel and a new TV show.

So please, can we stop with the ‘Occupy Halo 3 ‘ movements already?

Microsoft Confirms Increase In Xbox One’s Graphic Processor Clock Speed

Rumors have been floating around the net these past few weeks suggesting that Microsoft were in the process of changing some of the hardware in the Xbox One.

While the majority of what was rumored is still rumored, today Xbox Live’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb took to his blog with a podcast confirming the Xbox One’s graphic processor bump.

An example that’s actually been really good news for us, an example of that is we’ve tweaked up our clock speed on the GPU from 800 MHz to 853 MHz. Just an example of how you really start landing the program as you get closer to launch.

It’s just an example where we really get close to the final performance envelope of how the box works and really making sure we have a great product for our developers to build great games against.

Other rumors stated that Microsoft would increase the RAM to 12GB, though they most likely stem from the dev kit models of the Xbox One, considering that they are said to have 12GB. As with any gaming consoles, typically, the dev kits have more RAM than the consumers models. We will just have to wait ’til Gamescom to know for sure.

Thanks, NextVG.

Santa Monica Details The Future of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

While no plans for any future character or stage DLC has already been confirmed, Sony Santa Monica, the team now in charge of PS All-Stars revealed today their plans to continue supporting the title.

In the lengthy forum post, Santa Monica reiterated that no future character or stages DLC were being worked on, however a balancing patch that is in early in development should be hitting sometimes this fall. Along with this they announced that the characters pre-order costumes for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy will be available as free downloads on August 27th with  Isaac and Zeus costumes releasing alongside with the balancing patch. All for free of course. You can read the full details below.

Hi guys,

First, thank you for your continued and passionate support for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. We’ve had a lot of challenges along the way, and we appreciate your dedication and commitment to the game. We understand there have been a lot of questions which we have been unable to answer. Today, we’d like to hit those head on and share our plans for the future.

First off, the tough news:

— There will not be any new DLC characters or environments released for PS All Stars. We were proud to work with SuperBot Entertainment and they created a great game, but the characters that have already been released to-date represent the full content for PS All Stars.

— In the course of any game’s development, there are always elements that never quite get finished or the team decides not to use in the final game. Some of these additional materials from the game’s development phase have been recently released, but unfortunately these are very far from finished assets and were not included in the final game for a number of production and legal reasons.

On the brighter side, here are our plans going forward:

— Balance Patch: This is still in the early stages of research and development. Even if everything goes smoothly with the development and implementation, the patch will not be finished until later this fall. In particular, we’re assessing all character strengths, weaknesses, and functionality for adjustment considerations in this patch. We have been monitoring your feedback in the forums, and will continue to follow your thoughts throughout the process.

— We have a third set of costumes for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy that were only exclusively available as pre-order bonuses in the US. While the other pre-order costumes were eventually available for sale through the PlayStation Store, these last four costumes were never released. We are going to release these four costumes on PSN as a completely free digital download to everyone on August 27. We’ll keep you informed as the date approaches.

— Zeus + Isaac’s third costumes will also be made available free. This will require some back-end work, and so these two costumes will go live with the balance patch release later this fall. When they are released, these costumes will also be free for everyone to download from the PlayStation Store.

— Monthly Tournament Leaderboard Resets: We are aggressively looking into the issue of title belts not being correctly appropriated to some people based on their seasonal performance. We do not have a fix at this time, but will keep you posted on our progress. In the interim, starting today, we are resetting the overall leaderboards, and will continue this on a monthly basis. Monthly seasons are back! Along with this effort we are going to establish a set of community activities that will be communicated on the official All-Stars forums, designed to recognize the top monthly competitors.

On a personal note, we want thank everyone for their dedication to the game. There have been a lot of challenges on the development side, and for the players as well, but it’s this kind of passion from players that inspires us to try and move forward, even during difficult times.

– The Team at Sony Santa Monica

By the look of this post, this may be the last of the work currently being done on All-Stars. By no means was it a terrible title, and in fact received great praise in our review, so it is pretty sad to see it die so fast.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Image Teases New Zombie DLC Weapon?

Throughout the week, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 developers Treyarch have been slowly trickling out hints suggesting that the game’s forthcoming DLC will be particularly focused on new Zombies content.

On their Facebook page, the studio released four images of old, tattered notes which we presume were written by the original cast members of the first few Zombies mini-games. You can check them all out right here.

Today, the studio released schematics of what appears to be another prototype Zombie weapon called the “Mauser (Prototype CSX)” which we presume will most likely make an appearance in whatever new Zombies content the team has planned. Check it out below:

999186_10151545626477724_1780917911_n

Looks like a more modern take on a classic World War II weapon. What do you guys think? Do you dig the design?

Update

As reader jj 16802 pointed out in the comments below, the weapon appears to be a heavily modified Mauser C96 used by the German army in WWII.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Pre-Orders ‘Well Below’ Black Ops 2, Activision Preps for Increased Competition This Year

Heading into the next console generation with their flagship first-person shooter title Call of Duty: Ghosts, publisher Activision is ramping up sales and marketing investments in order to keep up with the increasing competition from titles like Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 4 and is preparing for a shaky console transition.

“As excited as we are about our holiday launches, we face a more crowded, competitive landscape than we have in the past,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick recently said in a Q2 2013 earnings call. “We face titles that compete more directly with our offerings than past offerings, including highly anticipated, heavily marketed games launching around our launch dates. To address the effect of this competition, we’ll likely further increase our sales and marketing investments this year.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts, releasing this November 5 across multiple platforms, will face direct competition from Electronic Arts this year yet again with Battlefield 4 launching a week prior on October, 29. Unlike previous years in which Modern Warfare 3 directly faced Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 seems to have gained some serious momentum this year and appears to have generated an increasing amount of excitement among FPS fans.

Kotick also attributes uncertain short-term success to a cloudy landscape presenting itself in the near-future; namely, the transition to next-generation consoles.

“While the transition to new consoles should bring great long-term opportunities, it creates risk in the short-term,” he said. “Console transitions can create purchase hesitation, and otherwise affect consumer spending.”

CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg chimed in with similar remarks.

“As one might expect in this console transition year, pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year,” he announced. “However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation among past COD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition.”

He added, however, that “it’s worth mentioning that Ghosts pre-orders are over double those of Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is the last time we launched a new sub-brand for the franchise.”

Are you surprised with Call of Duty: Ghosts’ pre-order numbers? Is the console transition to blame? Will Battlefield 4 give Ghosts a run for its money this Fall? We want to hear your thoughts below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 No. 2 Best-Selling Title Year-To-Date

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 may not be the number one best-selling game this year, but that doesn’t mean publisher Activision isn’t pleased with this quarter’s financial results.

Being the No. 1 third-party publisher in America and Europe combined for first six months of 2013, Activision saw great success with its No.1 and No. 2 best-selling titles year-to-date – Skylanders Giants and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Black Ops II in particular has outsold all past Call of Duty titles, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Concluding the company’s second quarter 2013 financial results, Acivision announced:

For the quarter, Activision Blizzard was the #1 independent publisher in North America and Europe combined, including accessory packs and figures, with the #1 and #2 best-selling titles year-to-date– Skylanders Giants™ and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.¹ Additionally, Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft® remained the world’s #1 subscription-based MMORPG, ending the quarter with approximately 7.7 million subscribers.²

Black Ops 2’s third DLC, Vengeance, launched today for PlayStation 3 and PC gamers, who can also expect sic new personalization packs to drop this August 22. Tomorrow, August 2 marks the beginning of Double Weapon XP for all platforms until Monday morning, August 5.
