Expect Star Wars: Battlefront in Summer 2015, Says EA

Eager Star Wars fans can mark Summer ’15 as the launch window for the highly anticipated sci-fi shooter from DICE, Star Wars: Battlefront, according to publisher Electronic Arts.

Speaking in a briefing call to shareholders, CFO Blake Jorgensen said, “The first game that we’re focused on is Battlefront. It’s a traditional game that’s done extremely well and this will most likely come out around the same time as the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of ’15.”

In addition to Battlefront which EA previously stated is already “well into development” at DICE, Jorgensen also mentioned a few other Star Wars projects.

“We have partnered with Walt Disney and LucasFilm to develop a whole new generation of Star Wars games for the console as well as for mobile and handheld devices,” he said.

As outlined in the initial deal between EA and Disney, both BioWare and Visceral Games would be joining DICE in the creation of new Star Wars games.

Sounds like Summer ’15 is going to be a good one.

Multiplayer Announced For Batman: Arkham Origins – Pits Heroes Against Villainous Thugs

Splash Damage made a surprising announcement today pertaining to Batman: Arkam Origins. Those who are looking forward to this prequel to the Arkham series can expect a full on multiplayer mode this time around.

The game will feature a multiplayer mode known as “Invisible Predator Online” that’ll be grouped into three factions, two of them being the villain factions (3 players each) with the third being the heroes (two players). Both the villain factions will consist of three thugs and as for the Heroes faction, it appears that they’ll be going with the stealth-and-no-guns route as you’ll be playing as either Batman or Robin.

The villains will have a special ability called ‘ultimate back-up’, in which they’ll be able to play as either Bane or Joker and have special abilities that could help turn the tide of a match. Bane not only has the ability to soak up massive amounts of damage, but he can also dish it out in hand-to-hand combat or just simply decide to throw any unfortunate being to come into contact with him as weapon, or even use a rocket launcher to blow them away.

As for the Joker, he will be outfitted with two custom hand guns, such as the ‘Ace Of Spades’ which is capable of firing explosives and deal massive splash damage, as well as the ‘King Of Hearts’, which requires more precision as it’s a one shot kill weapon. Also, if the Joker is caught off-guard in a close quarter combat situation, he can easily just fall back on his ‘Joy Buzzer’ which releases deadly volts.

In addition to being cautious of the opposing villainous faction, players must also be weary of the ‘hero’ faction which consist of the dark knight himself, Batman, and his trusty side-kick, Robin, trying to apprehend these villains either by stealth elements to ensure fear onto unsuspecting thugs, or by using the duo’s gadget to subdue them with traps.

Both villainous groups will be on the look out for one another, but they will also be fighting over three control points against the crime fighting duo. If a gang holds the majority control points, the opposing faction will start to lose respawn tickets every 30 seconds for every control point they don’t control and eventually lose once their respawn tickets have been used up.

Splash Damage have also added small details about Invisible Predator Online, to ensure keeping each match as tense as possible, such as having swarm of bats and flapping of cloth resembling the rustling of capes to be featured in each map.

You can see Batman: Arkham’s Origins multiplayer mode in action for yourself in the reveal trailer below:

[youtube id=”eZEk_vJSm3A” width=”618″ height=”378″]

Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer mode will be launching with the game, which is slated for a October 25 release date on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

Xbox One Smart Match – Microsoft Details Improvements to Matchmaking on Xbox One

Microsoft details how matchmaking on the Xbox One will see major improvements with Smart Match.

Smart Match will use “advanced algorithms to pair players based on skill, language, and now reputation,” according Xbox Live Senior Product Marketing Manager Mike Lavin in a recent update on Xbox Wire. “Games will be able to share player stats with Xbox Live and each other; to learn, evolve, and provide you with the best possible matchmaking available.” Hopefully, that means automatic pairing with players of similar skill level or experience.

Microsoft claims that the system will also help keep less popular multiplayer modes and maps more populated and will eliminate the long wait times associated them. Essentially, Xbox Live will match make for you while you’re off checking out other applications. Even friends will be able to set up matches for a whole party.

If you’re like me, however, you’re probably concerned about the time it will take to quit an activity like surfing Facebook, load up the game that has found a match for you, and enter that match without keeping others waiting. Well, according to Microsoft, you can “take yourself as many touch points away from the matchmaking process as you can and you still don’t need to worry about finding your way back. Once Xbox One is done finding your perfect match, it will prompt you with a simple toast—no matter where you are or what you’re doing—so you can jump straight into playing.”

The Xbox One’s Snap mode will allow for seamless transitions between activities.

Ryse001

Sounds pretty interesting and, if it works well, might just make the matchmaking experiences in Call of Duty: Ghosts or Battlefield 4 all the more enjoyable.

We’re excited to see it in action when the Xbox One drops this November.

Rumor – Treyarch Teases Next Black Ops 2 DLC With Old Letter? [Updated]

Via social media, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 developers Treyarch are teasing something that we suspect could be related to upcoming DLC.

An image of old, tattered note posted on Treyarch’s official Facebook page appears to describe the moments leading up to group of characters learning the potential of a recently discovered “element.” The inclusion of the “element” and “The Doctor” hint that the note is referring to something Zombies-related.

Judging by the date, it could even describe the origin of the entire Zombies story that Treyarch has interweaved throughout their recent Call of Duty titles since World at War.

Check it out for yourself:

1005196_10151540735107724_1040566932_n

If you can’t quite make it out, the note reads:

September 22, 1917

When we began the site excavation, our group could not have predicted the dark path down which our work would lead us.

The Doctor remains both adamant and optimistic that the potential applications for the new found element are worth the associated risks. I concur with the sentiment, but feel increasingly anxious as to the changes I am seeing in my oldest friend…

We’re not quite experts on the background of Call of Duty Zombies, so what do you think it means? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Update 1

Another note has been posted on Treyarch’s Facebook page. The writing hints that the writing is of one of the classic Zombies characters, Takeo.

1011375_10151541066922724_792175638_n

It reads (in sometimes bad English):

October 6 – 1917

The emperor grows concerned that the barbariant drive for mechanig ation may soon yield weapons more deadly than anything the world has ever known.

I am honored to act as his trusted agent and will insure that any such weapons are secured for the benefit of Japan…

Update 2

Another note has appeared. Perhaps the American, Dempsey, is the Author?

1001394_10151542395772724_976275132_n

It reads:

November 19, 1917

Its seems beyond a doubt that Fritz is up to no good. Air reconnaissance suggests prototype armored weaponry is being tested in Northern France. Scuttlebutt reads like the ramblings of a mad man; strange lights in the sky… a mysterious plague… even giant metal men.

Ill be at the site within the week to learn the truth with my own eyes.

Update 3

And again, another note appears on Treyarch’s Facebook page. This one is definitely related to Nikolai, what with the talk of the “motherland”. Check it out.

1002550_10151542866777724_1164880031_n

It reads:

December 10th -1917

It appears my current exile from the motherland may prove tortuitous. I have received orders to undertake a vital mission in Northern France.

Reports from the area suggest the Kaiser’s War Machine may be gearing up to unleash something unlike anything we have seen before…

What do you think it all means? Could this be the last letter, now that Treyarch has referenced all four original cast members of the Zombies origin story? Keep those thoughts rolling below!

Call of Duty: Ghost Global MP Reveal “Will Include Several World Premier Announcements”

There may be more to the recently announced Call of Duty: Ghosts global multiplayer reveal event than initially teased, according to the latest press release from publisher Activision.

On top of going “in-depth on all things multiplayer,” the event is said to “include several world premiere announcements for the millions of fans that play Call of Duty every year.”

The team at Infinity Ward will be giving the Call of Duty community the first details on what everyone can expect this fall when Call of Duty®: Ghosts launches worldwide.  The global reveal will go in-depth on all things multiplayer, and will include several world premiere announcements for the millions of fans that play Call of Duty every year.

While we probably won’t be learning about an entirely new Call of Duty game by that point in time, we might hear about some upcoming special events, projects, game features, or maybe learn about what’s in store for Call of Duty: ELITE or the next Call of Duty Championship.

Keeping in mind some of the recent “Modern Warfare 4” by Sledgehammer Game rumors as of late, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the studio officially announce their involvement in the Call of Duty development cycle. But that’s just us speculating.

What do you guys think? Are we going to learn about some other Call of Duty-related projects that Activision has up their sleeve?

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Multiplayer Debut, Co-Op Modes Revealed

A pirate’s life is hard. Especially when there are others out to stab you in the back. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag brings the same AC multiplayer you know and love to the next-generation and into a brand new setting.

Our friends over at VG247 have the scoop on some of the new co-operative elements that Ubisoft is brining to ACIV:BF this fall.

One of the game’s new key features called Gamelab allows gamers to create their own multiplayer adventures with over 200 customizable elements.

“We really wanted to give more power to our community this year,” said Director Damien Kieken. “This is the fourth multiplayer instalment, and we really asked ourselves, ‘What can we do this year to please the community, to make them happy? Where can we go?’

“One of the answers was just to give them the content, to let them do what they want.”

Players will be able to alter templates and tweak modes to their liking. For example, players could set up a “Pistolier” where melee kills are turned off. Players can only use pistols as a means of longer-distance killing. Gamelabs can also be shared with friends and uploaded to the community.

ACIV:BF’s Wolfpack co-operative mode is getting a heavy face lift and will no longer simply be a “linear experience” with a “story wrapper”, according to Kieken.

You and up to three other players will be able to start things off in the Discovery mode, a tutorial of sorts that will help you get familiar with the game’s mechanics. Once you’re feeling ready, you and your buddies can venture off into the Unleashed mode where you will attempt to “attain as high a sequence as possible by lining up multi-kills and synched kills, defending chests, eliminating disguised enemies, beating infected opponents and more,” says VG247’s Patrick Garratt.

Check out the gameplay demo below to watch ACIV:BF’s Wolfpack co-op mode in action, including modes like Wolfkill and Infection.

[youtube id=”DZI1zm8OhM0″ width=”618″ height=”378″]

Are you pumped for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer? While you leave your thoughts below, be sure to check out some of these new screens and pieces of concept art.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag drops this October 29 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, later for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

PlayStation 4 ‘Party Chat’ Will Be Free, Friends List Upped To 2000, According To Q&A

Tired of making the tough choice of having to remove someone from your friends list to make room for another one, due to the current-generation limit of only 100 friends? If so, you will be interested to know what Sony is planning with the PlayStation 4, which is set to launch sometime this holiday season.

According to the recently released Q&A video from Sony’s PlayStation Access channel, which you check out here, Sony is planning a big change for the PlayStation 4 in terms of social activity. With the PlayStation 4, the highly requested party chat service can be accessed without the need of a PlayStation Plus account. Sony will also dramatically bump up the friend limit cap all the way up to 2000, which beats out the 1000 friend limit the Xbox One is reported to have.

Additionally, those who already have a PSN avatar and username won’t need to worry about having to making a whole new identity once the PlayStation 4 launches, as your current PSN alias will carry over to the Playstation 4.

Do you think you will ever be able to reach the cap limit for the PlayStation 4’s friend limit?

Norms For Next Gen: The Clan System

Today, most clan battles are set up through a third-party websites such as Gamebattles. Looking back on this generation of gaming, I ask, ‘why is it that the same style of clan features a website Gamebattles provide were only built into a small handful of games like Killzone and Resistance titles?’

You may be thinking clan features only complicate things, but I disagree. From a personal standpoint, and from experience with the plenty of PC games that include clan support, I say it adds even more value to a multiplayer experience.

My two most memorable multiplayer games this generation were, surprisingly, Resistance: Fall of Man and Killzone 2 – Not because they reinvented the FPS genre – they didn’t – but because they were amongst the few titles that actually supported a true clan system.

The Tag system is as old as the dinosaurs.
The Tag system is as old as the dinosaurs.

You guys are going to see me using Call of Duty a lot in these articles. It’s not that I hate the game, it’s just that with all their success, it makes little to no sense to keep some of the same formulas lying around. Why in the world are we still using clan tags as a way to tell players that we are, in fact, apart of a clan? I understand that Call of Duty Elite (now free) has a dedicated clan system, but that’s basically a separate portion, apart from the main game. Call of Duty isn’t the only culprit to not have a clan true clan system, as Battlefield 3 also follows this so called “clan system”. It’s just a shock for me to see that games such as Warhawk, a title that is completely underrated and doesn’t even come close to the sales of either of these games, has a fully functional clan system with the little given resources it had.

So, what exactly made the Clan system from both Killzone 2 and Resistance: FoM so good? Well, it was the depth and the available options the games gave us. Like all Clans out there, there’s always a leader, but remember, a leader can’t always be there and sometimes they need help to make decisions. That’s where the option to appoint other commanders came in. Both these games utilized it and allowed clans to grow and develop better. That wasn’t the only option though. In Killzone 2, we actually got to set-up tournaments dedicated to just clans, along with each clan having their own spot to a dedicated clan leader board. Even an amazing feature called “Battle Replay” made it’s way in to allow players to study the way clans play and how to improve you’re own.

[youtube id=”Sy-iirxpKNg” width=”618″ height=”378″]

I can easily say that Killzone 2 probably had the best and most well-supported clan system in console gaming history.

Oddly, the iterations after the first Resistance and second Killzone saw a disappearance of all these features, which is one of the reasons why Killzone 3 did poorly. Why Insomniac Games and Guerrilla Games decided to go this route is beyond me, but it certainly left a bad taste in many players’ mouthes.

I don’t see this being a standard in multiplayer games next-gen, despite the amount of resources developers now have to work with, and how much they could enhance the multiplayer experience, but who knows. I believe there are a still a large number of gamers out there dedicated forming communities and camaraderie between others who are like-minded. It’s fun to play our favorite online shooters competitively with others who are on the same page, so why aren’t developers giving us the tools to build clans, which essentially breathes even more life into these games.

I look forward to games like H-Hour: Word’s Elite which is said to come fully equipped with clan support features, creative director David Sears told us an interview earlier.

How high does clan support in a game rate with you?
