Tomb Raider Multiplayer – Characters, Game Modes, Traversal and Traps Detailed

More details about the anticipated multiplayer portion of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot have surfaced, providing a better look at some of the characters, game modes, and traps that will appear in Eidos Montreal’s take on Tomb Raider multiplayer.

Themes like survival, traversal, verticality and environmental threats that are heavily featured in the single player will play a large role in the multiplayer as well, according to SquarePortal. Studio Head Darrell Gallagher writes, “the multiplayer has to fit and it has to be fun. We’ve worked hard to make multiplayer fit seamlessly with the single player game and its key themes and we’ve play-tested the hell out of the multi-player game, it’s working well and gamers are enjoying it.” In this particular setting, groups of survivors are pitted against scavengers, vicious natives of the island, also known as the Solarii.

Survivors

  • Roth
  • Samantha
  • Alex
  • Liam
  • Jonah
  • Grim and a crew member
  • More to be revealed later

Scavengers

  • Fixer
  • Vlad
  • Mathias
  • Creeper
  • More to be revealed later

As mentioned in previous reports, only two game modes have been revealed so far. As detailed on the SquarePortal, they are:

Team Deathmatch

Set Up: Survivors have newly been stranded and the Solarii are intent on destroying them. This is a team mode supporting 2 teams of up to 4 players each.

The winning conditions: The first team to get 25 kills, or be ahead in kills when time expires, wins the round.

Rescue

Set Up: The survivors have wounded comrades that need medical attention. There are medical supplies throughout the level. The survivors must collect and bring back (Capture the Flag) the medical supplies to the capture zone while the Solarii try to stop this from happening by executing the survivors.

Winning Condition: Survivors capture 5 Medical Supplies, Solarii execute 20 Survivors

When it comes to map traversal, the Solarrii have a slight advantage with the use of the “Ascender.” They can use it to quickly traverse the map and catch up to the survivors.

In each level, there are numerous traps that players can interact with. Some of these include the spike trap, the snare trap, the rockfall trap and the lightning rod. The spike trap will instantly kill any player who doesn’t mind their surroundings and stumbles upon one of these after being set up by the enemy. The snare trap hangs the victim upside down. However, he or she will have access to his or her pistol in order to make an escape attempt. As for the rockfall trap, any player tripping this wire will be in for one massive headache, killing them instantly. The deadly lightning rod can be set up in certain areas that will cause lighting to strike any enemy that should enter within its range, killing them instantly as well.

There are also a number of other items that players can interact with like the shotgun barrier and the turret. Shotgun barriers block off certain areas of a map that can only be accessed by blasting away at it with a shot gun. Player can tap the corresponding button to enter emplaced turrets in a number of levels. Each turret has infinite ammo, but can overheat and requires some time to cool down.

It looks like enemies aren’t the only thing you’ll need to consider when playing Tomb Raider multiplayer this March on the Xbox 360, PS3, or PC. Do you think the added elements of interactivity, traversal, and traps will enhance the multiplayer?

Halo 4 – Part 2 of Spartan Ops Season 1 and New Playlist Update Incoming

Update

As a small correction, the upcoming episodes of Spartan Ops are not part of Season 2, but part of the second half of Season 1.

This Monday, January 21, Halo 4 fans can look forward to yet another playlist update.

343 Industries will be premiering their “Community Forge Test” playlist, in which a number of community-made Forge maps are selected and inserted into a brand new Matchmaking test playlist. You’ll be able to test the best in 4v4 matches and report bugs and provide feedback here. According to the Halo Bulletin, the Matchmaking Systems Team will sort through all feedback regarding all maps tested and will then select which ones will appear in Matchmaking.

We’ve also been putting some of Halo 4’s community-made Forge maps under the magnifying glass. If you missed it, check out Part 1 of Halo 4: Forged From Scratch – Classic Maps Remade.

Also incoming this Monday are two Specializations that will be unlocked for all to enjoy: Pioneer and Pathfinder.

Pioneer

Spartan optimization for deployment into uncharted, hostile territory (such as uncolonized worlds or Forerunner constructs like Requiem) for the purpose of gathering and relaying information. The Fast Track armor mod allows Spartans to gain more experiential data from each encounter, effectively ranking up more quickly during the process.

Pathfinder

Spartan optimization for deep, unconventional deployment within unknown enemy territory and with little to no assistance from command. The Gunner armor mod decreases the time of weapon overheat when occupying a vehicle weapon position, and increases Spartan speed while carrying a detached turret.

You’ll be able to rank up through these dedicated paths, unlocking armor sets, emblems, visor colors, weapon and armore skins, as well as armor mods.

Beyond this Monday’s playlist update, we also have a brand new season of Spartan Ops the second half of Spartan Ops, Season 1 to look forward to, as well as the Majestic Map Pack, due out this March. Updates on each are forthcoming within only a few hours, according to 343i.

Before getting all caught up in what the second half of the season will have to offer, 343i has concocted this quick video recap of what went down in the first half, should you need the refresher. Keep in mind, if you you have yet to play any of the chapters in episodes 1-5, you may find this a tad spoilerific. You’ve been warned.

[youtube id=”rTa8FJKbIIY” width=”618″ height=”378″]

343i has also provided some Spartan Ops Season 1 stats for you to check out below:

Xbox Live activity charts are out for the week of January 7th.

According to Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb’s blog, FIFA Soccer 13 has overtaken Halo 4 on the Xbox 360, dropping it to 4th place as FIFA Soccer 13 now sits at 3rd. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition stays put at 2nd place while, unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 dominates this week’s chart yet again at 1st.

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU’s)

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  2. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
  3. EA Sports FIFA Soccer 13
  4. Halo 4

On a sadder note, Halo 2 PC players can wave goodbye as servers will be shutting down by mid-February.

Halo community manager Jessica Shea writes on the Halo Bulletin, “…we’re sad to report that the service end-date for Halo 2 PC Multiplayer will be February 15, 2013. We’ve been monitoring the population for months, and it’s been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less. Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time. We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts. #singletear.”

Are you surprised to see Halo 4 overtaken by FIFA Soccer 13 on the Xbox Live activity charts? Are you going to miss Halo 2 on the PC? Let us know in the comments!

DayZ Creator Comments on April Release Date, DayZ Sequels, and The War Z Scandal

The Standalone version of DayZ is on track for an April release, according to creator Dean “Rocket” Hall.

“Yes, I think so, but anything could happen and usually does,” he answered in a recent AMA on Reddit in response to questions from fans wondering whether or not the standalone version would release before April. Hall added, “we’ll know more when the results of the tech test are out. Any dates before then would be pure speculation, and my last speculation didn’t work out so good,” referring to a recent delay announcement for DayZ Standalone.

The tech test, which was originally stated to be released imminently, still has no solid release schedule, but Hall did mention that the team is “down to the last few things to fix before the first test servers pop online and we run the first full servers. Slowly we’ll hand out the first keys and get a few servers running. Then we will reassess. It could go really well and we open up quickly, or it could go badly.”

He urges fans to keeps hopes at a modest level during the testing period, saying fans shouldn’t “expect the tech test to be fun, or very pretty. It’s a tech test, any game design that makes it into that will be a bonus.”

Hall was also asked how long the test would stay invite-only, before opening up to the public. He simply responded, “as long as it takes to smooth out the architectural issues.”

On the subject of sequels, Hall revealed that a DayZ sequel would be of interest to him, provided it was done right: “…sequels are really just a numbers game. If the idea is still fresh, I hope the harsh approach of DayZ spawns a sequel, so long as that sequel tried something new and fresh (but with the same flavor) on, say, the PS4 and/or the Steambox. I mean, why not? But I’m not sure how involved I would be with that.”

When asked, Hall also provided his own insight in regards to The War Z’s very shaky and extremely controversial “foundation” launch on Valve’s Steam store, writing, “I am angry about The War Z. I’m very angry.” He continued, “I’m quite hurt personally because anyone can see how similar the words are, and while the average gamer knows the difference individual people don’t. I’ve had family members/close friends mistake the difference and confront me about what they believed was unethical behavior they thought I was making. I really don’t think anyone can understand just quite how exasperated that can make you feel when you’ve gambled everything on something, put your whole self and reputation on the line. So it hasn’t made my life very pleasant and I disagree entirely with the conduct and how consumers have been treated.”

On a more positive note, Hall mentions that fans can expect some “unannounced surprises” for “the next 12 months at least, probably beyond that,” when DayZ Standalone launches later this year.

Borderlands 2 – Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt DLC Review

Danger! Excitement! Mustaches! Borderlands 2’s newest and latest DLC add-on, ‘Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt,’ is now available for download, but how does it actually fair? Find out in this review.

As per usual, like other Borderlands 2 DLC, you find yourself being greeted by a rather entertaining intro video to Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt. Once you manage to fast travel to Hunter’s Grotto, where the story starts off, you’ll immediately notice how big and open the swamp continent of Aegrus is as well as the rather diverse cast of hostile creatures you can look forward to slaying during your stay in the refreshing swamp-like environments. The scenery is a much needed breathe of fresh air and features a rather bad-ass fan-boat that’s outfitted with a short-range flame thrower or caustic/shock mines that stick to their targets.

borderlands-2-sir-hammerlocks-big-game-hunt-1-625x1000

Axton taking on a few of the native savages in Aegrus

The story behind Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt starts off by having our favorite vault hunters taking a weekend trip with the most sophisticated gentleman on Pandora himself, Sir Hammerlock, to hunt down some of the ‘biggest’ creatures on the swampy continent. Things goes terribly wrong thanks to a Hyperion scientist by the name of Proffessor Nakayama who can be simply described as the evil hyperion scientist version of Shade, the NPC from Captain Scarlet and Her Pirate’s Booty DLC.

He constantly interrupts you and Hammerlock to get his revenge since you killed his idol, Handsome Jack. It leads to awkwardly funny conversations as he desperately tries to seek your attention to fight him and avenge Handsome Jack’s death. Unfortunately for those who were expecting a rather lengthy main quest line, you’ll be saddened to know that Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt only features three – yes, three – main quests that you can easily breeze through in less then an hour. It leaves much to be desired from this DLC and leaves a big shoe for the side-quests of Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt to fill in. On a more positive note, the side-quests do try their best in making this DLC as entertaining as possible, which some actually do well. For example, Clap-Trap has you clean the urine of a creature who’s been vandalizing Clap-Trap’s secret getaway hide-out.

You will soon start to realize that Sir Hammerlock’s DLC still contains a lot of fetch and go missions and has you travel around the many new locales without much excitement happening around you. It will get boring to most people rather quickly. However, to make up for the lack of fun and original side-quests. Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt does contain various new creatures and savage bandits that do give you an actual challenge when you do encounter them, even if your outfitted with the best possible equipment. You’ll find that taking out the witch doctors, which happen to be bandits with mystical powers that you learn to fear the most out of all of the new baddies added to this DLC, are still quite enjoyable to battle with.

With the addition of the witch doctor comes a new dimension to the Borderlands 2 combat system. They are often supported in combat by fellow bandit savages who’ve been powered up. If these witch doctors are left alone for a long time, you will be in a world of hurt, as there seems to be no limit as to how far they can power up their allies. They can also be very agressive along with having strong defensive capabilities.

Speaking of challenging creatures, Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt features two new “invincible” enemies that are, thankfully, creatures this time around and not humaniods like the past three. First up is Voracidous the Invincible, who happens to be a slightly larger version of your super bad-ass stalker. As fun as this fight was, this boss requires more specific character builds and strategy, which is a plus in my eyes.

borderlands-2-sir-hammerlocks-big-game-hunt-2-625x1000

Maya and Zero taking on some of the minions protecting Voracidous the Invincible

This brings me to the hidden invincible Drifter boss, Dexiduous the Invincible. For those who loved fighting Crawmerax from the first Borderlands, you will enjoy taking on the behemoth Dexiduous. He only takes damage from shooting at his yellowish critical spores that change location once you have destroyed the others.

But there’s a rather hefty catch into getting this massive Drifter to spawn. It will require you to deposit 96 bars of Eridium into four furnaces that are located throughout Hunter’s Grotto. You’ll then have to flip the switch to spawn him, but not before taking out the mobs of savage’s that spawn around the switch.

Thankfully, if you do manage to take down Dexiduous, you will be heavily rewarded with a shower of purple loot and as well have a chance to get his special drop, ‘The Chopper,’ which is a Bandit assault rifle of blue rarity that’s capable of containing all of your assault rifle ammunition in one massive magazine.

For those who mostly care about the new loot that Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt is set to bring, you will be very happy to know that all of the new weapons that it includes are very powerful and, in fact, contain pretty sweet Seraph items that are actually worth the grind. This inclues rather easy-to-get powerful items which drop from the various creatures that you are sent out to hunt.

3 / 5

Overall, Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt seems to be a step back from Mister Torgue’s Campaign Of Carnage and can be considered a little bit too short with little to no replay value, aside from taking down Dexiduous and trying to acquire the best possible loot and some of the new equipment that’s been added to the game. Sir Hammerlock’ s Big Game Hunt DLC get’s three stars out of five.

Xbox Live To Adopt Communications Over Skype

Not only Xbox Live, but a whole suite of online-capable communication devices by Microsoft.

According to CVG, Microsoft will be “consolidating all their communications technology” around the Skype platform. This means the next generation Xbox as well as PCs and Tablets. It also means possibility that “we’ll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live.”

CVG also noted that a recent job advertisement revealed that Microsoft was in search of a user interface designer for the “next-gen Xbox” and that the job was, allegedly, located at Microsoft’s UK-based Skype offices. The ad reads, “The team you’ll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox.”

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype in 2011 was one one of the largest purchases the company has ever made in it’s 40-year history, costing them a total of $8.5 billion.

It was also announced back in November that Microsoft would dissolve one of the oldest and most popular messenger services, MSN, and replace it with Skype. Many of you using Microsoft’s Outlook email service may have recently received an an email similar to this one:

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 6.13.00 PM

What are your thoughts? Would you prefer to use Skype as your form of in-game communication? Are you already using it anyways?

Thanks, CVG.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist Releases August 20 and Gets a Brand New Trailer

Originally set for a Spring 2013 release, Ubisoft has now announced that Splinter Cell: Blacklist will be arriving on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this Summer, August 20, still with no mention of the Wii U version.

It is currently up for pre-order and includes a number of bonuses from various retailers.

Senior Producer, Alex Parizeau, explains Blacklist’s delay, saying, “…this truly is the biggest game in the series – it has a huge scope. We’ve created a massive amount of content across all the game modes, from single player, to co-op and multiplayer, and we feel strongly that the game will benefit from taking the time we need for polish. We all saw how that decision helped another great Ubisoft franchise this past year with Far Cry and we have the same high expectations for our title.”

He also mentions that Blacklist will support a wide variety of play styles from “Ghost,” “Panther,” to “Assault” and will introduce a “completely universal economy system.”

Without further ado, check out the latest Splinter Cell: Blacklist trailer that harkens back to the good old days of a fully-equipped Sam Fisher, goggles and all.

What did you think? Looks pretty similar to classic Splinter Cell games. Do you think that’s a good or bad thing?

Thanks, IGN.

Borderlands 2 – Xbox 360 Compatibility Pack Fixed, Gearbox Extends Gear-Up Event Until Thursday

A recent Borderlands 2 bug with the “compatibility pack” that has affected all 360 players, which kept players from joining up with their fellow vault hunters online, has been resolved.

For those who have been enjoying Borderlands 2 and wanted to take part in the final day of the special Gear-Up event but couldn’t due to this bug, you will be happy to know that, as of few moments ago, the issue has been fixed and the compatibility packs are now working and ready for download.

The last day of the Gear-Up event consisted of an increased rate in which Vermivorous the Invincible appears, as long as their are two or more players present.  Luckily for those who missed out on the action, Gearbox has extended the increase chances for Vermivorous to spawn all the way until 11:55 AM EST Thursday, January 16th.

In addition to the increased spawn rate of Vermivorous, it seems that once it’s been defeated, you’ll have a very high chance to acquire the legendary Norfleet Rocket Launcher off  it’s dead body and add it to your collection of loot.

We also have good news for those of you have been wondering what the price is for the upcoming skins and heads that are set to drop January 22nd.

According to a recent post by Chris F, community manager over at Gearbox, has stated that fans of Borderlands 2 won’t need to drop an assumed $5 USD for the madness pack, as each of the new customization options can be purchased individually. More details coming as soon as next week.

This cost $9.99 and “includes six single-player missions, four rare animals to hunt, a bow and flare gun for multiplayer, and all other previously released retail bonuses in The Monkey Business Pack, The Lost Expeditions, The Warrior Pack, and The Predator Pack.”

League of Legends – Riot Games Introduces New League System in Upcoming Update

League of Legend developers Riot Games will be introducing a new league system to ranked play in an upcoming update.

With it, their aim is to provide “more challenges for competitive players and a greater sense of progression for newcomers.”

Players will earn League Points by winning ranked games which will help you move up a list of rankings in your league. You’ll be able to fight your way into new divisions or even into an entirely new league during the next tier of competition and will earn rewards as you complete new challenges and defeat tougher opponents.

5v5 ranked teams who reach the Challenger tier will have the opportunity to go pro in Season 3, which you can read more about here.

Guild Wars 2 – Over Three Million Units Sold, ArenaNet Details Improvements for 2013

Guild Wars 2 developer Colin Johanson details what’s in store for the near future of this free-to-play MMORPG as ArenaNet celebrates crafting the most critically-acclaimed MMO of 2012, selling over three million units since last August.

Johanson writes, “our goals for the New Year are to build on the areas of the game that were successful in 2012, to learn and apply lessons from things that didn’t work as well, and to make sure that 2013 is a year none of us will ever forget.”

So, what does this mean, exactly? ArenaNet promises to focus on community and player relationships through community events, including world-versus-world and player-versus-player events. The reward system is also going to be beefed up significantly, urging players to visit and explore parts of the world that they may have neglected at first.

Other improvements include:

  • Leaderboards on our website where you can compare your abilities with other players to find out who is the best in the world.
  • Expanded and re-designed encounters for bosses in dungeons and the open world.
  • New types of achievements which tie into the new systems of achievement rewards.
  • Continuing to improve the security of the game fighting botters and hackers, as well as improving the games stability by addressing bugs as quickly as possible when they are reported.
  • Identifying existing parts of the game that can be improved and made more fun/exciting, and investing the time to ensure everything we’ve built really shines as we move forward.
  • Improving the new player experience to make it easier for new players to learn how to play GW2, enter the game world, and more quickly learn the game without being overwhelmed.
  • Improving the “looking for group” tool to make it easier to find other players to play with in the game.
  • The improvements and fixes to the Fractal dungeons, detailed in Isaiah Cartwright’s blog post here.

To read up on all the exciting things to come, check out Johanson’s blog post as well as his video preview below:
