Ubisoft Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over The Crew Shutdown

Ubisoft has been facing tough times recently, and a new controversy involving The Crew has added to the challenges. Some players are now suing the company, raising questions about game ownership and digital licenses.

The Crew, part of Ubisoft’s racing game franchise, became the center of debate after its servers were shut down in December 2023. By April 2024, players could no longer access the game they had purchased.

In response, two gamers from California have now filed a class action lawsuit against Ubisoft, claiming the company’s actions were unfair. While Ubisoft offered refunds to players who had recently purchased The Crew, many long-time owners were left without options. This led to the decision to bring the matter to court.

The lawsuit, filed on November 4 in California, uses a comparison to describe Ubisoft’s actions. They compared the situation to buying a pinball machine that comes with all its components, only for the manufacturer to later remove the paddles and bumpers, making it unusable.

Additionally, the lawsuit accuses Ubisoft of misleading players on two fronts. First, it claims that players were led to believe they were purchasing the game outright, but they were actually obtaining a limited license, even for physical copies. The packaging reinforced this misunderstanding by suggesting that the game could still be played offline after online support ended, which was not the case.

Second, it alleges that physical discs and downloaded files were falsely represented as containing the full game, while in reality, they functioned merely as access keys to a remote server. According to the lawsuit, these practices violated California consumer protection laws.

The two players are seeking to have the lawsuit approved as a class action, which would allow other affected players to join in seeking compensation. The case touches on broader concerns within the industry about digital delivery and ownership rights.

In September, a related development saw Valve update its store to inform gamers that they don’t own games bought on Steam but only hold a license to use them.

It will be interesting to see how this lawsuit against Ubisoft unfolds, as it could mark another key moment in the ongoing discussion about digital delivery.

Stellar Blade’s Next Update Arrives November 20, Brings Nier Content Photo Mode and More

Two months ago, Sony announced that Stellar Blade would be getting crossover content with JRPG, Nier Automata. Well, we now have a date for that, and it releases alongside a game update as expected, it arrives with a new game update.

First off, the Stellar Blade x Nier Automata DLC will be out this November 20, and yes, it is a paid purchase.

The content collab by Stellar Blade director Kim Hyung Tae and Nier Automata Director Yoko Taro is one “marked” by mutual respect and creativity” according to Shift Up.

The main thing in the premium DLC is Emil (voiced by Mali Kadowaki), the oddball character from Neir: Automata. Emil’s Shop also appears in the world of Stellar Blade where 11 different collab special items will be available. These are items that intertwine the best of both games.

If you don’t have plans on spending any money, there’s still a lot to look forward to, as Stellar Blade’s next update is also planned to roll out the same day! This brings Photo Mode and lots more to the action game.

Stellar Blade Finally Gets Photo Mode This November 20

What can we expect to be available in the patch planned for all base game owners? Here’s a rundown:

  • New accessory “Symbol of Legacy” – This changes the appearance and presentation of the Tachy Mode when equipped.

  • Lip-sync support for six additional languages (French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish)
  • Players can now pick a specific song from the turntable to listen to.
  • Character customization expanded and added “No Ponytail” feature from the list of Ponytail Length,
  • Auto-targeting and ballistics correction features will be applied to enemy insta-kill skills.
  • Four new outfits are also on the way too!

Expect this to be a hefty download when it’s available, and hopefully, this will be accompanied by bug fixes as well. Based on the roadmap leak, we reported on, it seems this is the last known Stellar Blade update, though that doesn’t mean we won’t be getting more in the future. Speaking of updates, we did get one last month, and this was the patch that added PS5 Pro enhancement support.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Gets 14-Minute Gameplay Deep Dive

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle release is just a little under a month away, and as expected, Bethesda and Machine Games have begun ramping up their marketing, with the latest being an all new deep dive into the gameplay of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Better grab your hat, and whip, because you’re going to need it.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Dives Deep With 14 Minutes of Gameplay

Info from the press release:

Step inside the adventure of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle™ with a brand new, extended, Deep Dive Gameplay video. From exploring ancient, trap-filled tombs to infiltrating enemy encampments in disguise, and heart-pounding swings across treacherous chasms with his whip, every moment in Indiana’s journey holds a new discovery.

You know, while I would have loved to see this in third-person over first, I have to say that this video has certainly convinced me that a first person Indiana Jones can work. I shouldn’t be surprised, considering that MachineGames, the developers behind the Wolfenstein series, is behind this, but still, the game looks impressive.

Beyond that, the deep dive also gave us some story tidbits, including a new look at Locus, who’s played by the late Tony Todd.

Elsewhere, several menus and options have also been confirmed and for those who like the challenge of things, there’s an option to turn off puzzle hints.

The deep dive also went over some of Indy’s abilities, which grant him several different affects such as being able to come back from a potential death, or gaining extra strength to takedown enemies unarmed.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle rides out December 9 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the PS5 version releasing in Spring 2025.

Yakuza Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Says Game Size Will Soon Stop Being Important to Players

Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, recently shared his thoughts on the future of game design. According to Nagoshi, the industry’s obsession with bigger, longer, and more challenging games might be nearing its end as players start shifting their focus to other elements that make a game enjoyable.

In an interview with Famitsu, Nagoshi said, “I want to make a game that’s fun to play, but not too challenging. If you include overseas games, there are so many titles out there that it’s impossible to play them all.”

He also commented on the growing number of large-scale games, stating, “Looking at the situation, I think the number of console games for the general enthusiast is a bit excessive. There are still many titles coming out that boast large sizes, but I think the era of games where volume is a selling point is coming to an end.”

This change is also influencing Nagoshi’s approach to his first project with Nagoshi Studio, developed in partnership with NetEase Games. He revealed that the size of the game is still under consideration as the team moves closer to full development.

“We should be entering the mass production phase of the assets soon, so it’s time to decide on the final volume estimate, but I’m still thinking about whether it’s really good enough,” Nagoshi explained. “Of course we have the map, but the current version is so big, maybe even too big.”

Nagoshi added that the team initially designed a large map with roads and highways but has since been scaling it back to find the right balance. “This time, by researching existing games, we started by creating a fairly large map with roads and highways. Now we are gradually reducing it and exploring the best balance for the game.”

For those who don’t know, Nagoshi left Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio to establish Nagoshi Studio in 2022. He is working with NetEase Games and a team of veterans who previously worked on Yakuza.

Meanwhile, Nagoshi’s first game is still unknown. He has hinted that it will include violence as a gameplay element but won’t fully dive into the thriller or horror genres. “I want my game to be more like a Quentin Tarantino film, so there’s room for humor,” he teased.

F1 24 Update 1.14 Preps for Season 4 and Brings Visual Improvements

Codemasters has delivered F1 24 update 1.14 on all platforms this November 11, and this brings the game’s Season 4 data to players, alongside visual improvements, bug fixes and more. Those on current-gen consoles, you’ll see this as F1 24 update 1.014, and features the same changelog as its last-gen brethren.

F1 24 Update 1.14 Ushers in Season 4 and Visual Improvements

Season 4 – Champions Legacy – From November 13

  • Pro Challenge:
    • Oscar Piastri (Nov 13 – Jan 6)
  • Challenge Career:
    • Lewis Hamilton (Nov 13 – Jan 6
  • Race Scenarios
    • 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (Dec 2 – Jan 6)
    • 2022 Belgian Grand Prix (Dec 10 – Jan 6)
    • 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix (Dec 10 – Jan 6)

The v1.14 patch for F1®️ 24 has begun rolling out on all platforms. Please ensure you are connected to online services in order to receive updates.

Visual Improvements

  • Updates for track side elements to bring better quality reflections and a more realistic appearance

All game modes and platforms have benefited from updates to materials used for track side elements such as sponsor boards, fences, panels, concrete barriers, and lights, with additional tweaks to shaders. These updates offer better quality reflections and a more realistic appearance overall but are especially noticeable on metallic textures and during wet conditions.

  • Updates to the Las Vegas environment, including real-world hotel branding and the animated Sphere for PC, PS5®, and Xbox Series Consoles

Iconic real-world Las Vegas hotels and casinos such as Caesars Palace and the MGM Grand have been represented in this update, replacing some of the fictional names on buildings around the street circuit. Additionally, Sphere now features a set of animations, similar to what you would expect to see on the real thing.

  • Improved Ray Tracing to generate cleaner images from the simulated light in real-time (PC, PS5®, and Xbox Series only)

We have updated the denoiser (a crucial set of algorithms used in Ray Tracing) to generate cleaner images from the simulated light in real-time. This allows things such as vehicle halos to be seen reflected on car bodywork, or glass on the start/finish straight at Albert Park to reflect their surroundings more accurately and with more clarity.

  • Improved the visual quality of spray from tyres in wet weather

At times, spray coming off tyres in wet conditions would look blocky and low resolution. This update aims to improve the effect of this spray, ultimately improving the look of wet weather conditions.

  • Reduced the amount of smoke generated by wheel spins and lockups in multiplayer sessions to prevent visibility issues

Depending on the circumstances, excessive smoke could be produced in situations where lots of cars are on the same stretch of track, such as during race starts. This update aims to reduce the time that tyre smoke stays around, improving visibility for those driving through it.

  • Minor visual improvements to a variety of F1 vehicle textures
  • Improvements to a variety of F2™ 2024 vehicle liveries and suits

Bug Fixes

Career

  • Fixed an issue where there would sometimes be a long pause before the Engineer tutorial played in the first session of a My Team Career

Audio

  • Fixed an issue which was causing some F2™ 2024 drivers to not be read out during the Grid Rundown sequence

Tracks

  • Track Acclimatisation Practice Programme at Las Vegas now has DRS Activation points in the correct positions
  • At Brazil, AI vehicles will now position themselves closer to the front of their grid slots after a formation lap

Miscellaneous

  • Option added to create a badge with just an Emblem and no background
  • Fixed an issue where retrying a Practice Programme would cause the UDP data to become corrupted
  • Added support for AMD FSR 3 on PC
  • Various UI Improvements

Don’t forget, Season 4 doesn’t start until November 13, though the data released today should apply the patch changes ASAP.

Pizza Chain Transforms Your PS5 Into a Pizza Warmer With Free 3D Printed Design

You can risk overheating your console or eating a cold slice of pizza. The choice is yours, as Pizza Hut is letting you turn your PS5 into the ultimate Pizza Warmer so you can keep all your pizza slices nice and warm.

Who Needs a PS5 Pro When Pizza Hut Can Give You The Ultimate Console Upgrade For Free

Unlike KFC, which announced the KFConsole a little over three years ago with a dedicated chicken warmer, Pizza Hut has officially released what they are calling the “hottest console upgrade” ever, dubbed the “PIZZAWRMR.” If you can’t tell, that’s Pizza Warmer, oddly abbreviated, and its purpose is to keep your slices of pizza warm. This isn’t just a joke either, like the KFConsole clearly was, as the PIZZAWRMR can be yours for the low price of FREE! Well, you need to own a 3D printer and use a filament to print it, so there is a cost in material, but otherwise, if you have all that, you can go ahead and print your very own PIZZAWRMR by downloading the official 3D pints right from their website.

For those who don’t have a 3D printer, we’ll your sort of our of luck unless you can find someone, though Pizza Hut did provide a video and images of what it looks like, along with the instructions to do with it once it’s printed.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Pizza Hut Canada (@pizzahutcanada)

Instructions for the PIZZAWRMR

Disclaimer – This 3D printing design for the “Pizza WRMR” is specifically engineered to be compatible only with the console that has rear ventilation measuring 11.7” x 1.31”. See below measurement.

Attaching to console:

After the warmer has been printed and put together, it can be attached to the rear ventilation of the console. Be gentle when putting it together as to not damage the plastic. It has been designed to easily attach to the back ventilation of the PS5 Slim Console and rest on top of it.

Use:

After it is assembled and attached to the console, use a 34x23x2.5cm foil tray inside the warmer. Do not place pizza directly on the plastic. A foil tray can easily be sourced from a local store or
online.

Eat and Enjoy:

Start gaming to warm it up, place your pizza slices in the tray and close the lid, and enjoy! For best results we recommend placing medium pizza slices from your local Pizza Hut.

Alright, joking aside, I don’t think I can really recommend anyone doing this, as it probably blocks your PS5’s ventilation to some degree. It’s also not the wisest to have something that blows out hot air and to transfer all of it to something that is sitting on top of your console, getting hotter by the second. Oh, and while Google says it’s “safe” to breathe the air directly from your PS5, you probably don’t want the dust from the console blowing on or near your food.

The point is, don’t do this. It might be cool to print out, but if you want to keep your pizza warm, just invest in an actual warmer.

PUBG Spinoff Project ARC Controller Support Being Considered, Though No Concrete Plans for a Console Release

PUBG Studio’s latest title, Project ARC, an isometrical top-down shooter set in the PUBG universe, is currently only slated to be released on PC sometime in 2025, which might be a bummer to many console-only players, though if things go right in development and commercial success, that may eventually change as the studio doesn’t seem entirely against a console release.

In a developer Q&A that was shared with us during our hands-on with Project ARC, PUBG Studios confirmed that Project ARC is currently a PC exclusive. However, despite that, the studio is considering some form of controller support on the platform, which may eventually lead to the title coming over to consoles, granted if it’s a success.

Project ARC’s Console Release May All Hinge on Its Success on PC

“We are considering controller compatibility, which could support a future console release if the game succeeds, though there are no concrete plans yet. However, the gameplay experience may not translate as effectively to mobile, so we’re not currently considering that platform.”

Interestingly, the studio said they aren’t considering a mobile release despite the potential market that mobile gaming could bring in for this type of game. That’s understandable, given that, from my time with the game, it is relatively fast-paced compared to many other mobile games. That’s not to say it can’t work, but it would need a lot of work and changes to function properly for mobile gaming, especially phones and touch-based screens.

In the same Q&A, they said they have high hopes for Project ARC to become popular in the online competitive space, which may be difficult for a mobile game to achieve compared to PC and other platforms.

Even if the title doesn’t end up coming to consoles for a while, we can at least hope that controller support drops for it sooner, rather than later for those who prefer that type of input.

Project ARC currently has no release date other than a planned early access for 2025.

https://x.com/ConcernedApe/status/1854430049316790623

As is with any game’s major update, it’s perfectly understandable to see bugs surface. If another patch is released, we’ll let our readers know.

Despite Borderlands Movie Flop, Franchise Still Saw Boost in Sales; Take-Two to Be Selective on Licensing IPs

Have you seen the Borderlands movie released this August? If not, you’re not the only one, and it seems based on critical reception, you aren’t missing out on anything special. While the movie might have bombed hard, it still managed to move game sales according to Take-Two Interactive, parent company of 2K Games.

This was something Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick revealed in the company’s recent quarterly earnings Q&A, where Zelnick was asked about the movie’s contribution to the series, whether Take-Two saw it benefit any game sales, and what the company plans to do in the future when it comes to adapting more IPs into movies or shows.

Despite the Borderlands Movie Bombing, Game Catalog Sales of the Franchise Benefited

Zelnick responds with, “With regard to Borderlands, we don’t really need to break out the contribution from the film because while it was economically positive, it wasn’t material to our results. Even though the film was disappointing, it actually benefited our catalog sales. So that is a sign that making a movie or a television show based on our very high-quality IP can drive catalog sales, and that can be a good thing.”

In addition to that, Zelnick says they have been “really selective” about licensing, adding, “All that said, we’re really selective, and one of the reasons we have been so selective about licensing is we would really prefer that everything that comes out with our brands in it is really, really successful. And we can’t guarantee that, especially when it’s out of our hands. So we have licensed other titles, we’ll continue selectively to do so, but emphasis on the word selectively.”

While we’ve seen more and more video game IPs translating well into movies and TV shows (such as HBO’s The Last of Us), the same can’t be said for Borderlands. Even featuring a star-studded cast, the game bombed hard commercially, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it has score of 10% on the freshness scale, meaning 90% of people think it’s  what people call, a “turd.”

Even if the movie wasn’t worth the watch, gamers did benefit from it, as Gearbox even released new free content for Borderlands 3 to celebrate the movie’s release. While there’s no new Borderlands movie on the way (thankfully!), there is Borderlands 4, which 2K confirmed will be released sometime in 2025.

Sony’s President Says PS5 Pro Pricing Hasn’t Had a Negative Impact on Sales, “Hardcore Users” Are Their Targeted Audience

Despite some of the consensus on the internet that the PS5 Pro is overpriced and not worth it, it seems that those comments haven’t had much, if any, of an impact on sales, and that’s according to Sony’s president Hiroki Totoki.

As spotted by Genki_JPN, Sony’s president, Hiroki Totoki, responded to those comments in a Q&A during Sony’s quarterly earnings report, noting that he thinks they have had no impact on the newly revised console when it comes to sales.

“In terms of the pricing many people made different comments on that, but pricing on PS5 pro has not had a negative impact I don’t think.”

He goes on to say that their current target audience isn’t your everyday casual gamer but rather the “hardcore” audience of gamers, those looking for the best possible experience possible when it comes to fidelity and performance, though clearly aren’t PC gamers.

With a hefty $700 price tag that may potentially go above $1000 thanks to planned tariffs from the newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, we can understand why so many on the internet would criticize the price. It’s a big chunk of change, even if the rave reviews it has gotten and the clear jumps in both visual quality and performance, many feel the pricing may be a sign of what’s to expect from the next-gen of consoles.

Still, while it may not be on par with sales of the regular PS5 (assumingly) Sony clearly has different sales targets for the PS5 Pro, which may prove to be successful by their own margins.

It will be interesting to see just how well. Given that this is the second “Pro” console they’ve done, the first being with the PS4 Pro, we’re sure the company knows exactly what to expect this time around, and likely has expectations in check, otherwise why even bother doing another Pro console if the first time they did it wasn’t considered a success.

The PS5 Pro is now available worldwide for purchase, and retails for $700 USD.

Skydance Games’ Behemoth Launches on PCVR Dec. 5 With All Other Platforms; Fortnite Experience Now Playable

Until now, Skydance Game’s Behemoth only had a release date for the PSVR2 and Oculus Quest versions, with many wondering why they’ve been holding out on the PC version. Well, wonder no more, as the studio has officially confirmed that it’ll be available on the same day as all other platforms. Oh, and a free Fortnite experience is playable right now!

PCVR Players Will Get to Enjoy Behemoth the Same Day as Everyone Else

As announced on X, Skydance Games has confirmed that the PCVR version of Behemoth will launch on December 5. This is the same day as the PSVR2 and Oculus standalone versions, though oddly, the publisher didn’t say which PC platform this will be on.

Checking the official Steam page, the title still has a TBA release date and is only available for wish listing. We expect this will likely be updated soon, as we can’t imagine it not launching on Steam, given how big the platform is. However, as they noted, we’ll have more details on all that soon.

In some related news, the studio, in partnership with Hidden Studios, has collaborated for a new playable Fortnite experience! It may not be in VR, but it still gives you a short tease of the game.

Behemoth officially launches on December 5 for PC, PSVR2, and Meta Quest. If you’re looking forward to Behemoth, you might want to check out our list of big VR games that are available this year. One of the games in the list include Metro Awakening, which fared very well with me in our review.

Marvel Rivals Adds Moon Knight to Roster, Final Fantasy and Street Fighter Audio Devs Confirmed Part of Dev Team

At D23 Brazil. NetEase and Marvel Games revealed a new hero that’s confirmed to be in Marvel Rivals’ launch roster, and it’s Moon Knight! Given Marvel Rivals doesn’t follow the MCU or any specific comic cannon when it comes to character appearance, the dev team shared that for the character, they incorporated a color scheme of white and black, which draws form the ancient Egyptian mythology linked with Khonshu.

Check out the character and his abilities below:

Marvel Rivals’ Moon Knight Design Is Vastly Different From the Comics

As you can see from the trailer, Marvel Rivals’ Moon Knight drops the form-fitting traditional super suits seen in the comics. For the game, NetEase integrated technological components and a more rugged armor motif into the character design.

Not familiar with the character? Here’s a brief description straight from the press release:

Mercenary Marc Spector was given a second chance at life when he became the avatar of the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. As Moon Knight, he doles out righteous vengeance, locked in a never-ending battle with both the criminals on the streets and the voices in his head. In Marvel Rivals, Moon Knight wields supernatural powers bestowed by Khonshu to vanquish his foes.

Other than Moon Knight’s reveal trailer, NetEase also revealed that two veteran music producer for games are joining the dev team. Shota Nakama is the main music producer and arranger for the upcoming free-to-play hero PvP game. Nakama’s previous works include Final Fantasy XV and Made in Abyss. Another dev team addition is Masahiro Aoki as the game’s music composer, and the dev is known for his work on Street Fighter V and Bayonetta 3.

Before Moon Knight, NetEase revealed that Psylocke will be part of the roster. Chances are, we’ll be getting more hints for the next few heroes included in the launch lineup leading up to the game’ s December release.

In other Marvel Rivals news, the dev team talked about the comparisons to Overwatch, and mentioned how Rivals is not only faster-paced, but also more accessible to new players.

Marvel Rivals will be available this December 8 as a free-to-play game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Tony Todd, Candyman Star and the Voice of Venom From Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Has Passed Away

Prolific actor Tony Todd, who horror fans best know for his role in the Candyman films and, more recently for gamers, the voice of Venom in Insomniac Game’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has passed away this week.

As confirmed by a rep for Tony Todd to Deadline, the actor, age 69, passed away in his Los Angeles home on November 6. No details were disclosed on the cause of death at this time.

Tony Todd, who was born December 4, 1954, in Washington D.C., has been acting and playing in major movies and television roles for over the last four decades. However, it was his role in the 1992 horror film Candyman that earned him mainstream recognition. He reprised the role of Candyman back in 2021 for its sequel. In 2023, though, the actor took on the voice role of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a role that he was highly praised for, as he brought a rather terrifying side of Venom through his excellent voice work.

This is devasting news, and we can only hope that Tony Todd passed away peacefully at his home. Our prayers go out to all his family and friends.

Until Dawn Update 1.007 Sneaks Out on PS5

While port developer Ballistic Moon just released a patch for Until Dawn on PS5 that added PS5 Pro support and other bug fixes a few days ago, that patch just got released on PC today. Not only that, but the studio also pushed out Until Dawn update 1.007 on PS5 this November 8 as well.

Confused? Don’t be. Basically, it boils down to the 1.06 patch released on PS5 on November 5 just rolled out for PC today, while the studio released yet another patch for the PS5 version today.

Until Dawn Update 1.007 Aims to Fix More Issues

While the studio has not released the official patch notes just yet, they did reveal the known issues being worked on currently, which should be part of the fixes in the PS5 patch released today.

Known Issues/Fixes to come

  • We have temporarily disabled FSR Frame Generation for Nvidia 40-series graphics cards due to severe performance issues. We will look to address this for the next patch.
  • Virtual Shadow Maps not working as intended (only currently working in menus, disabled elsewhere due to bugs)
  • “Enhanced” Ray tracing currently disabled until scenes are curated to utilise it
  • Initial “Preparing Shaders” screen will be replaced with a background operation in the main menu
  • Stutters in Chapter 9 Sanatorium section as Mike
  • “Show Global Stats” setting not functioning as intended
  • TAA can be toggled on when using DLSS/FSR
  • PC Don’t Move key remapping not functioning as intended
  • Mike’s chest model appears incorrectly during the opening of Chapter 5
  • Matt disappears briefly when picking up the axe in Chapter 5 when playing on Fidelity Mode
  • It’s Shining trophy/achievement not unlocking unless collectibles are obtained in one playthrough
  • Players have reported rendering issues (missing crosshairs, etc). Please note that Until Dawn requires DirectX 12 as a minimum, and running on DX11 will likely cause rendering issues in-game.

Once Ballistic Moon releases the changelog for the PS5 patch out today, we’ll let our readers know. Chances are, this patch will be made available to PC gamers soon.

Metal Slug Tactics Review – A Tactical Surprise

Three years after its initial announcement, Metal Slug Tactics has finally arrived. Developed by Leikir Studio and published by Dotemu, it’s not a side-scrolling action platformer as other earlier entries, but rather, as the name implies, a tactical turn-based strategy game. Can such a genre work for this series, or should Metal Slug stick to the fast-paced arcade-style action it’s known for? As you’ll find out in our Metal Slug Tactics review, it definitely works, and works well.

Familiar Faces, New Format

Graphically, Metal Slug Tactics looks great. Gorgeous pixel art is rendered in an isometric viewpoint. You fight on floating islands which are made up of tiles, chunks of which rotate in and out of the battlefield as turns progress. These environments look like they were ripped straight out of one of the SNK classics, but extended to be rendered in 3D. The game’s interface is a tad clunky, though, as the menus all use very small fonts for some reason. This is a complaint within the game’s community already, but hopefully it will be patched out in due time. The audio also sounds great for this kind of game, with a nice arcade-like soundtrack that leans into the chiptunes and synthesized sound effects popular back in the Metal Slug arcade heydays.

Metal Slug Tactics has a little bit of a plot for its campaign, and you don’t have to be deeply invested in the lore of the Metal Slug series to understand it. Some bad dude (General Morden) is amassing an army, and you’re sent in to stop him. Some of the cutscenes that play out between maps are entertaining. A playthrough of the campaign for an average player will hover around five hours, and the random nature of each campaign add to the game’s replayability. It’s also a roguelike, in that if during any mission all of your team members die, then you’ll have to restart the entire campaign. Though, you are able to level up characters in between runs, which means you’re going to be more likely to pass whatever mission gave you trouble the last runthrough.

Move It or Lose It

Movement is crucial in Metal Slug Tactics. The further a character moves during their turn, the more resources they collect. This includes health, as one of the best ways to recover HP is to simply move as far as possible. It’s a mechanic you don’t have to think too hard about in order to remember, because every time you go to move a unit, an indicator appears above the currently-targeted tile to inform you of just how much your unit will heal, and how many dodge points they’ll earn.

As characters level up, they can obtain new weapons and abilities. Each character has two weapons, along with abilities that use adrenaline, which is picked up by moving around the battlefield as mentioned earlier. The more you move, the more adrenaline you earn, which is a great design that keeps things moving in a genre that is notorious for being a much slower, plodding affair. Characters can also use moves called a sync attack, which is triggered whenever one unit attacks an enemy unit that is in the line of sight and attack range of a teammate. If so, then the teammate will follow up the currently-controlled unit’s attack with one of their own, in many cases resulting in at least twice the damage to be dealt to the enemy or object getting attacked. It’s essentially a way to execute more than one attack move per attack phase, and also helps to speed things along.

Learn by Doing

While this is explained somewhat in the game’s tutorial, Metal Slug Tactics does not do a whole lot in the way of hand-holding. Heck, I lost my very first campaign mission where I had to escort someone to safety. But by testing things out, and leveling up characters, eventually you should be able to reach the game’s later stages, culminating in a boss fight for an area. In an era where most games seem to have trouble with too much instruction in the beginning of their campaigns, it’s nice to see something on the other end of the tutorial spectrum, even if this is a genre that requires a lot of time and patience in order to master.

At a launch price of $24.99, Metal Slug Tactics is a unique take on a classic franchise. The roguelike nature of its roughly five-hour campaign begs to be replayed, so that new tactics can be devised or experimented with. In a genre known for being slow-paced, Leikir Studio has figured out how to speed things up with an emphasis on movement in a way that makes sense in the Metal Slug universe.

Verdict

Metal Slug Tactics is a robust turn-based strategy game. You don’t have to be a fan of the franchise to appreciate the tactical options it presents you. While it’s not exactly the most helpful to players who might be new to the genre, the type of person who would even want to try a strategy game is naturally inquisitive anyway, so the trial by fire method of simply experimenting with your units and moves works here. The launch price is fair considering the average campaign length of around five hours, and its roguelike mechanics keep things fresh for each run. If you want a faster-paced turn-based game, then this is one to check out.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • Fantastic pixel art and style
  • Movement-heavy combat keeps things faster paced
  • Sync attacks are satisfying to pull off
  • Roguelike campaign encourages replays

Cons:

  • Harsh fail state rules might turn some off
  • Menus can be hard to read

Donald Trump’s Tariff Plan Could Raise Console and PC Prices; PS5 Pro May Cost $1,000

Donald Trump has been re-elected as President of the United States, and one of his campaign promises could significantly impact the video game industry. This plan, if implemented, may particularly affect the U.S., the largest gaming market in the West.

Trump intends to impose a 60% tariff on Chinese imports, which could lead to steep price increases for popular products among gamers and tech enthusiasts. Laptop prices could rise by nearly 50%, while gaming consoles like the PS5 Pro might cost close to $1,000. The current affordability of these products relies heavily on stable trade relations between the West and China, but disrupting these ties would almost certainly drive up prices.

Newly Elected US President Trump’s Tax Imposes a Stiff Hike on Chinese Imports

The proposed tariff aims to address perceived trade imbalances between the U.S. and China while encouraging domestic production. The plan includes tariffs of 10-20% on imports from most countries, but for China, the rate would soar to 60%. Importing companies, not China itself, would bear the cost of the tariff. Businesses like AutoZone, whose CEO Philip Daniele has already commented on the issue, saying, “If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer.”

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organization behind CES, conducted a study to assess the potential impact of the tariff. Their findings predict widespread price hikes, painting a grim picture for consumers. However, the study might overstate the issue since CTA members could lose a lot of money if the tariffs happen.

Even so, the analysis underscores real risks. In the short term, consumers would face higher prices across the board. In the long term, production could shift to other regions, as manufacturing domestically would remain costly due to the need for imported raw materials.

If these tariffs go into effect, laptop and tablet prices could go up by 46%, smartphone prices by 26%, and gaming console prices by 40%. For an industry already facing challenges, these price hikes would be significant. Trump’s campaign promises played a significant role in his re-election, and only time will tell if he can deliver on them.

Phasmophobia Update 1.000.003 Delivers Hotfix v011.0.2

Following last week’s patch, Kinetic Games has another round of fixes available for the horror game this November 8. Ghost hunters can now download Phasmophobia update 1.000.003, which is what the studio tags as hotfix v011.0.2. This fixes voice chat issues for Xbox Series X|S players, fix the weather effects issue affecting console gamers and more.

Phasmophobia Update 1.000.003 Serves Up a New Batch of Fixes on Consoles and PC

Changes

  • At release of the last patch, additional languages on Xbox Series X/S & PlayStation 5 were made available ahead of their official release. As these are not yet ready, we have removed these for the time being. We aim to get these out to players as soon as possible.

Fixes

All Platforms:

  • Fixed an issue that prevented non-host players, from seeing Blood Moon weather.

  • Fixed several spots in Grafton and Point Hope where the player could become stuck.

  • Players can now bind the left mouse button, the A button on Xbox Series X/S and the X on PlayStation to any key bind.

Note: This does not include the Journal as this would cause it to be unusable.

  • Fixed an issue where gamepad players could use shop UI shortcuts while loading, causing them to accidentally buy DOTS Projectors.

  • Fixed an issue where gamepad players couldn’t always grab objects in the warehouse.

  • Fixed an issue that would cause the Journal to be invisible if the player’s connection to the voice servers wasn’t complete.

Xbox Series/PlayStation:

  • Fixed an issue that would cause players on Xbox Series X/S to lose access to voice chat after disconnecting and then reconnecting a microphone.

  • Fixed an issue that caused console players to be unable to see weather effects.

That seems to be it. With another patch released on a Friday, it seems Kinetic Games won’t be following the usual Tuesday update roll out. Once another one is available, we’ll be sure to let our readers know. Until then, keep the fear!
