Metaphor: ReFantazio Update 1.009 Out, Now Lets You Turn Off Dash Blur

Metaphor: ReFantazio update 1.009 has been released, which seems to come with a new visual option.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Update 1.009 Patch Notes

Update: The full patch notes are now live!

  • New ON/OFF toggle setting for motion blur animation when dashing.

*Dash effects setting can be changed from SETTINGS > Dash Effects.

  • Fixed an issue where a quest in the Catacombs cannot be completed under certain conditions.
  • Fixed an issue where progression is blocked when enemies with status ailments conduct certain actions.
  • Expedited the animation when displaying the popularity ranking.
  • Fixed other minor bugs.

Original Story:

At the moment, Atlus has yet to release any official patch notes for this update. However, from our testing, we have found that there is now a new option in the settings that allows you to turn off dash effects, which is the motion blur you get while dashing. Additionally, though we aren’t 100% certain, it does appear that the game does run at a smoother framerate on the PS5 than it did before this update. We might be wrong, though performance was something that many have pointed out. The PS5 version doesn’t have any major dips, though it did look less smoother compared to the PS4 version. There doesn’t appear to be any additional options beyond the Dash one, for those hoping for PS5 Pro support, though that doesn’t mean it’s not there with this update if it’s simply to allow PSSR support.

Either way, we’re glad to see that Atlus is improving the game further, especially with the new dash effect option.

Should Atlus release any official notes, we’ll be sure to update the story above with them. As for those wondering when our review will hit the site, expect it soon!

Life is Strange: Double Exposure Review – An Uneven Composition

“The beast rose and stared into me. It became me. I had always been the beast.”

It’s been nearly a decade since Dontnod’s Life is Strange hit the episodic adventure game scene with the story of young Max Caulfield, a high-school photography student with the supernatural ability to rewind time. Throughout the original game’s compelling story, players watched their socially inept protagonist fight against fate in a heavy narrative that dealt with love, loss, suicide, grief, and murder. After the first game’s success, developer Deck Nine was quickly tasked with creating a prequel centering around Max’s friend and potential love interest Chloe, further fleshing out the events that led up to the original game’s central plot points. Dontnod themselves went on to develop a sequel in the greater universe of Life is Strange, and Max’s story was seemingly left behind.

Flash forward to today, and Deck Nine has effectively taken over as lead developer on the franchise. After nine long years, they’ve finally decided to return to our beloved photographer and pick up her tale at Caledon University, a prestigious college in Vermont where she’s been working as a photographer-in-residence. She has new friends, new powers, and a new outlook on life, but how do they stack up against the qualities of the first game that got players to fall in love with her to begin with? After my time with Life is Strange: Double Exposure, I am pleased to say that despite some wobbly plot points and a somewhat rushed ending, I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience stepping back into Max’s shoes and seeing how the series has evolved since the mid-2010s.

The Road(s) Ahead

Double Exposure’s gameplay centers around a fascinating new power. The death of one of Max’s closest friends reawakens her long-dormant abilities, but instead of rewinding time, Max now finds herself capable of jumping between two parallel timelines: one where her companion was killed and another where she survived. While the reality-swapping ability is used in a limited scope early on, later chapters of the game quickly open themselves up to possibility, allowing you to solve all sorts of puzzles through thoughtful hops back and forth through the rift between the two worlds. Max also possesses the power to peek into the other side without actually swapping over, which enables her to eavesdrop on private conversations and gain intel she might not have access to otherwise. This central gameplay loop feels well thought out, though it admittedly never crosses the threshold to allow for truly creative problem-solving. The story the team wants to tell is still rather linear. Unfortunately, that holds the mechanic back from ever reaching its fullest potential.

Layered beneath this new power is Life is Strange’s signature decision-heavy gameplay. Throughout the game’s roughly eight-to-ten-hour playtime, you’ll be asked to make several important choices that will affect how the story plays out in significant ways. These range from small personal changes for Max such as romance options to heavy decisions that can alter the path forward entirely. Cradled in the gaps of these weighty moments are numerous smaller stories and dialogue trees that help to flesh out the game’s universe and give you an intimate peek into the lives and psyches of Caledon’s diverse cast of characters. I found myself regularly going out of my way to pick up little flourishing details wherever possible, even going so far as to get invested in a group of undergrads’ intense game of assassin that transformed into a charming little love story. This content, while entirely optional, breathes life into the world that Max inhabits and feeds into the sense that life on campus doesn’t stop when you leave a scene. The game rewards you for paying attention and finding secrets by providing payoffs to a lot of these little storylines, and I appreciate that at no point are you required to pay attention to them if you’d rather indulge in a self-centered playthrough.

The Rule of Fifths

Double Exposure’s main narrative follows a fairly standard five-episode structure, each with some sort of revelation or twist to leave you eager to hop into the next. The early game does a phenomenal job of building a strong sense of intrigue and mystery. The odd circumstances surrounding the death of Max’s close friend combined with the mysterious return of her unique abilities make for a murky lake begging to be dragged. Every new factoid adds to the suspense, ultimately culminating in a whirlwind final act. It’s a shame, then, that the game’s finale feels a little undercooked in comparison to everything set up before it. Many of the answers to the questions I found myself asking during my playthrough were underwhelming, and the game’s strongest twists made themselves apparent far earlier in the experience. Additionally, the reveal that acts as the impetus for the events at the end of the game feels almost like a throwaway. It’s a bit of a letdown given the compelling foundation the game set early on.

What the last episode lacks in epiphanies, however, it makes up for in heart. Without spoiling too much, episode five primarily acts as a character study, giving Max and her friends ample room for self-reflection and a facsimile of Socratic dialogue on whether supernatural capabilities should—or even if they can—be used to change the outcome of reality. It’s clear that Deck Nine intends to build a larger narrative around this universe that’s been a decade in the making, and I applaud their ambition. It’ll take some time and further sequels to conclusively say whether such an endeavor will pan out. Either way, the more intimate scope of Double Exposure’s writing in its final hours was satisfying enough to come away with a positive opinion of the overall tale this game wanted to tell.

A Picture Worth a Thousand Words

Deck Nine proved their ability to evolve on Life is Strange’s stylized realism with their last title, True Colors, and they’ve gone above and beyond for this latest entry. Half of the reason I found Caledon so interesting to explore was the allure contained in each of its carefully painted environments. The campus feels genuinely lived-in: scattered stationery, cluttered bulletin boards, and sticker-studded backpacks are littered throughout nearly every room. The cozy glow of Max’s fireplace at her home illuminates her airy living area and messy kitchen. It stands in stark contrast to the cold sunlight of the snow-covered quad, which bounces off the brick walls of the Fine Art Building’s imposing exterior. Little touches of real-world detail dance in tandem with the game’s painted objects to cover a canvas that I loved existing in. I found little to no artistic shortcomings in my thorough search of this world’s every nook and cranny.

Facial animations have also been improved tremendously from previous entries. Every single interaction between characters feels hand-crafted, barring random conversations between unnamed extras. I could read the subtleties of Max’s nervous attraction when speaking to characters she could romance, and I felt a genuine connection in the heartfelt conversations between close friends. These little details go a long way when 90 percent of the game centers around them. Deck Nine clearly understood the importance of this. It not only made the required interactions enjoyable and easy to tune into, but it also incentivized me to seek out the game’s plethora of optional dialogues to soak up every bit of hard work the team put into making them feel worth my time.

It bears mentioning that years of practice have also helped the language in Double Exposure to feel much more natural than in previous entries. Sure, Max is still dorky and awkward, but her characterization is intentional as opposed to a byproduct of poor writing. None of the cast ever veers too far into Hollywood college student stereotypes. Text messages and social media posts available to view on Max’s phone all feel natural, and each character uses modern lingo and euphemisms without triggering any sort of excessive cringe from the reader. Granted, the series has always been about artsy kids written by artsy kids, so certain audiences might not find themselves able to resonate with the setting as a whole. If you’ve ever enjoyed the world of Life is Strange and the eccentric characters within it, though, they’re written better than ever before here.

Verdict

Life is Strange: Double Exposure’s return to Max Caulfield is one I would ultimately consider a success. While a few distinct choices hold it back from reaching any all-time heights, its heartwarming friendships and multifaceted story on love and loss kept me invested all the way through to its conclusion. I believe that if everything goes Deck Nine’s way, this game will be viewed as one part of a greater chronicle down the line. Given everything I experienced in my time with Double Exposure, I can safely say that the team deserves the chance to reach for their full vision and bring it to reality, however that may manifest. In the meantime, it’s worth getting in on the series’ new ground floor with Double Exposure, if for no other reason than to be reminded that real friendship is complicated, and the bigger picture of any relationship can only come into focus with trust, honesty, and forgiveness. Loneliness’s destructive vortex can turn any of us into a monster, but together, we can weather the storm.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • A deeply personal story full of interpersonal nuance
  • Gorgeous art, environments, and facial animations
  • A killer soundtrack
  • Plenty of intriguing side stories

Cons:

  • A lackluster final reveal
  • Unique mechanics never live up to their full potential
  • Fairly repetitive and simple core gameplay

Dying Light: The Beast Director Says PS5 Pro’s PSSR Could Be More Important Than GPU Boost

The PlayStation 5 Pro is just nine days from release, but many gamers have been hesitant about it due to its high price. However, for developers like Techland, the console’s new features — especially its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology – might just be enough to justify the console’s high price point.

In a recent interview with GamingBolt, Dying Light: The Beast director Tymon Smektała shared his thoughts on the potential of the PlayStation 5 Pro and its PSSR technology. He said,

We’re just starting to discover the full capabilities of PS5 Pro, but it’s already exciting as it gives us a lot more flexibility with graphics and performance. The boost in GPU will allow us to push visual fidelity, especially with complex environmental details like weather effects, which are very core to Dying Light: The Beast’s experience.

This kind of power also means generally smoother gameplay at higher resolutions, and that’s something very important for a game like ours, where the highest level of immersion is of utmost importance.

Smektala also believes that the PSSR feature could become even more significant in the long term, explaining,

Sony’s PSSR is a substantial push for the supersampling tech that other companies are experimenting with. It’s a great initiative as, in the future, this can allow developers to focus slightly less on performance and have bigger creative liberty. If what Sony is proposing will become a new standard, then PSSR could potentially turn out to be even more important than the direct increase in GPU power that the console delivers.

While Techland hasn’t officially confirmed if Dying Light: The Beast will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro, Smektala’s comments make it seem very likely. The PS5 Pro’s 45% GPU boost, improved ray tracing, and PSSR technology could be ideal for a game as visually demanding as Dying Light: The Beast.

Currently, over 80 PS5 Pro-enhanced games are already optimized to showcase the console’s capabilities when it launches on November 7, 2024, including major titles like Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

Dying Light: The Beast is currently in development at Techland and set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The exact date is yet to be announced, but we now know Kyle Crane’s return could benefit from PS5 Pro enhancements when the time comes.

Concord Developer Firewalk Studios Shuts Down; Game Permanently Sunsets

This September, Sony pulled the Concord servers mere weeks after the game’s release due to super low playercounts. While the PlayStation division was contemplating on their options back then, it seems they’ve finally decided on that, and it’s to shut down the game permanently, and also the developer. Firewalk Studios as well.

While it sounded like Sony was pivoting Concord to be a free-to-play title, the company decided to not pursue that road, and instead decided to shut down Concord.

In a letter on the official Sony Interactive website, PlayStation’s Co-CEO Hermen Hulst penned a later about the closure. Here’s the excerpt regarding Concord and Firelwak.

Concord Shuts Down Permanently, as the Developer Closes Its Doors

Regarding Firewalk, as announced in early September (An Important Update on Concord), certain aspects of Concord were exceptional, but others did not land with enough players, and as a result we took the game offline. We have spent considerable time these past few months exploring all our options.

After much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio.   I want to thank all of Firewalk for their craftsmanship, creative spirit and dedication.

Firewalk Studios also penned a letter to gamers as the devs sign off.

Firewalk is signing off one last time.

Firewalk began with the idea of bringing the joy of multiplayer to a larger audience. Along the way we assembled an incredible team who were able to:
– Navigate growing a new startup into a team during a global pandemic: Firewalk was founded in 2018 and was very small for its first couple years, only entering full Production in 2022.

– Build a new, customized next-generation FPS engine in Unreal 4 -> 5, delivering top-tier gameplay feel, beautiful worlds, and a performant 60fps technical experience on a stable and scalable backend on PS5 and PC to hundreds of thousands of players in our beta.

– Manage an acquisition / integration while readying technical and preliminary tests.

– And ultimately ship and deliver a great FPS experience to players- even if it landed much more narrowly than hoped against a heavily consolidated market.

We took some risks along the way – marrying aspects of card battlers and fighting games with first-person-shooters – and although some of these and other aspects of the IP didn’t land as we hoped, the idea of putting new things into the world is critical to pushing the medium forward.

In the same letter posted by Hulst, he also announced that Neon Koi, a first-party mobile developer, has also closed up shop.

There’s a lot of learnings to be had with Concord. Did it fail due to its character design? Maybe. Perhaps poor marketing? That could be it as well. Unfortunately for Firewalk, Concord’s failure is one that’s history-making, though not in a good way. In all my years gaming, I have never seen a game — regardless if it’s multiplayer or not — flop this hard.

Sony does have a shot at redemption though, and that’s with Bungie’s Marathon, which seems to be due for release sometime next year.

Some objects require an in-game plan to be learned in order to gain access, while other items are only unlocked for a single, specified character. The Atomic Shop is accessible at any time from the main menu, as well as the pause screen after leaving Vault 76 for the first time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.004.001 Crawls Out for for Flickering Fixes

Following last week’s patch for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that implemented PS5 Pro enhancements, it had the unfortunate by-product players suffering through flickering issues. Well, that should be resolved with today’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 update 1.004.001 download.

Clocking in as a 1.34GB download, this patch also implements suit fixes as well, which are listed in the official patch notes available below.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Update 1.004.001 Patch Notes:

  • Addresses an issue where the mask on Miles’ Advanced Tech Suit was white across different styles
  • Stability improvements
  • Fixes for possible flickering during fast travel introduced in 1.004.000
  • Adjustments to localized options descriptions introduced in 1.004.000

That’s about it. In terms of graphics mode added, only those who play the game on PS5 Pro will be able to utilize it. The 4GB download from last week introduced Performance Pro and Fidelity Pro as new graphics modes to the superhero game.

Aside from Spider-Man 2, another Insomniac Games title  — Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart — also got a PS5 Pro patch. Based on our count, these two games join the likes of The Last of Us Part II Remastered (and the first game), Horizon Forbidden West, Demon’s Souls and Rise of the Ronin as the first-party games that got PS5 Pro patches.

Expect more games to get updates for the PS5 Pro in the coming days.

In other Spider-Man 2 news, the PC version is set to swing out in January 2025, though Marvel also confirmed that there is no story DLC being developed for the game.

SnowRunner Update 1.55 Hits the Field for Patch 32.2 and Here Are the Fixes

Saber Interactive has released SnowRunner update 1.55 on last-gen consoles and as version 1.036 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is for the 32.2 patch that implements a short list of fixes. This is not a content drop, but is just a hotfix to help players running into various issues such as the game crashing when using the Control Evacuator and more.

What’s New in SnowRunner Update 1.55:

– Fixed game crashes when using ‘Control Evacuator’ function when the Ramped Towing platform and Loading Crane are installed together on a truck

– Fixed random black voids on the ground terrain appearing while approaching them on Xbox consoles

– Fixed the issue with the missing user avatar in the Garage and Player Profile menu on some platforms

– Sounds of EarthRoamer trucks have been improved

Of course, given we just got Season 14 last month, it’s expected that the patches we’ll be getting now are for fixes rather than for anything big. Once the patch for Season 15 rolls around, we’ll let our readers know.

Shinji Mikami Praises Resident Evil 4 Remake, Saying Capcom Improved the “Half-Assed” Story He Wrote in “Two Weeks”

The director of the original Resident Evil 4, Shinji Mikami, recently praised Capcom’s work on the Resident Evil 4 remake, admitting he “half-assed” the original story in just “two weeks” and shared his views on what makes a good remake.

Speaking to IGN, Mikami explained that the key to a successful remake lies in understanding the core elements that made the original a hit. He said, “I think the comprehensive and fundamental understanding of what it was that made the original work in the first place is probably the most important point of a good remake.”

“Everything from the ground up, basically,” he explains. “There’s a few examples of that with certain series that Capcom has put out.” He is, of course, talking about the recent run of Resident Evil remakes, the most recent being Resident Evil 4. Mikami has played it and offers glowing praise for the team at Capcom. “I thought that it was really well-made,” he said, impressed by how the remake handled combat details such as the timing between aiming and shooting.

The director explained that the original game balanced pressure and tension carefully, “I thought that they showed a really good understanding of that element,” he said. He continued, “Another thing I thought was really well done was the way they took the half-assed scenario that I just wrote up in two weeks and really built up on that and really fleshed it out.”

He highlighted how the remake team really understood the characters and their interactions, saying, “They showed a good understanding of the backbone of each character.” The director also praised the dialogue improvements, saying, “And they took not just the scenario itself, but even the dialogue, and they improved all that stuff so that was really great.”

While discussing remakes in general, he shared, “I personally don’t really have any interest in remasters.” Despite this, Mikami clearly appreciates the Resident Evil 4 remake for improving on what he calls a “half-assed” story, and he emphasized that a true remake succeeds by capturing what made the original work special.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake, released last year, also received high praise from fans and critics alike, with MP1st giving it a perfect score of 10 out of 10 and noting, “Capcom has made an already excellent game even better.” The game was also nominated for Game of the Year.
