WWE 2K23 Review – Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect

Wrestling and video games have a pretty epic history together. I remember one of the first video games I fell in love with as a kid was WWF Wrestlemania Challenge on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and my brother and I have spent years buying new games every year on our various consoles. As a lifelong WWE fan, I have had the privilege to witness Stone Cold Steve Austin beat Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 14, Mick Foley beat the Rock for his famous World Title win, and even recently, Cody Rhodes win the Royal Rumble in San Antonio (thanks to 2K). Wrestling is just in my blood.

That’s why a game like WWE 2K23 is so important to me. Yearly sports simulator titles are often a new coat of paint on some game modes and updated rosters, but when it comes to WWE video games, it kind of hits differently because of the entertaining nature of professional wrestling. Visual Concepts had a rough start transitioning from a support studio to Yukes on previous WWE titles to be the full-blown developer of the franchise, but it’s safe to say after taking a year off to really get things right, they came back gloriously with WWE 2K22, and it seems like everything is back on track.

Even Stronger

For WWE 2K23, Visual Concepts promises they are coming back “Even Stronger,” and they have absolutely delivered on that promise. I had an opportunity to play the game when 2K flew me out to the Royal Rumble in San Antonio, Texas, in January while mingling with WWE Superstars Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley, Omos, Drew McIntyre, and the New Day, so even before getting my hands on some early access to the full release, I knew I would be getting into another classic WWE video game and some fun new experiences gaming with my brother.

One of the biggest features of WWE 2K23 is the Showcase Mode, where you can relive some of the most amazing, classic matches in the storied career of cover star John Cena. Cena recorded a number of segments where he talks about the match while you play, and in a twist from last year’s Showcase featuring Rey Mysterio Jr, you actually get to play as Cena’s opponents in these matches. Completing all of the objectives in the match will allow you to unlock 15 different versions of John Cena throughout the years, including Visual Concepts’ take on a classic John Cena meme as one of your last rewards. I don’t want to be the one to spoil it, but it is well-played and should absolutely put a smile on your face.

Reliving all of these matches is amazing, as much as it has been there watching over the course of the 20 years of John Cena’s career. The final match of the Showcase is called “Council Of Legends” and, in a sense, introduces what could be WWE’s Mount Rushmore, as John Cena joins three of the biggest names from their era of WWE history in one classic fantasy match. John Cena has had so many classic rivalries with the likes of HHH, the Undertaker, Batista, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, The Rock, Edge, AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, and even more recently with your Tribal Chief Roman Reigns, but perhaps one of his most famous matches is what kicks off Showcase mode with his classic match at ECW One Night Stand against Rob Van Dam. I will never forget watching this live and seeing the fan with the “If Cena Wins, We Riot” sign. I have never believed a sign in the crowd more than that one!

Versions of all of those Wrestlers are unlocked by completing the objectives in the John Cena showcase, but in order to fully unlock what could be the largest base roster in wrestling history, you’re going to have to dip into other game modes. Winning matches will earn currency that can be used in the Superstar store to add tons of Legends like Bret Hart, Randy Savage, the Ultimate Warrior, and more.

MyRise is basically story mode and gives you two choices that can send you down different pathways. The Lock and The Legacy each have different stories and let you start your career as a rookie and work your way to being a legend. What’s great about this year is that you can actually bring created Superstars into the story and considering that the creation suite is as good as it gets in video games, and there are so many amazing creators uploading insanely cool wrestlers from every area of pop culture, this is going to be a must play mode for many people.

The Lock storyline lets you start your career as a premier athlete entering the WWE hype machine as you are groomed into becoming a generational talent.

The Legacy storyline has you entering as a second-generation Superstar facing all the pressure that surrounds following in the footsteps of greatness.

MyGM is the ultimate simulator and allows you to run your own brand in the game. There are seven GMs to choose from, with Adam Pearce, Sonya Deville, Stephanie McMahon, Xavier Woods, Tyler Breeze, Kurt Angle, Eric Bishoff, and Mick Foley as options. Each GM has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Xavier Woods can steal any non-title holder to your roster, and Stephanie McMahon can earn double the money. You can also choose to use your own custom superstar, which will make the first legend you sign free. This is a really fun game mode that lets you book your own shows and feel like you are an actual GM for whichever brand you choose. Options include Raw, Smackdown, NXT, and WCW.

MyFACTION is a game mode that does not really interest me, but it is very popular in the sports sim genre, and I totally understand why. It is similar to My Ultimate Team in the Madden franchise and relies on buying packs and developing and leveling up your roster. You can earn currency by playing matches and trading and selling cards, but many people use real money to buy packs as microtransactions. I am not anti-MTX personally and spent 20 bucks to open some packs and ended up with a Sapphire Diesel and Montez Ford to go with Emerald Matt Riddle and Chad Gable, which I believe would be a nice foundation to get started in this game mode. With that said, to play completely free it’s going to be a grind, and I don’t know if it is the right game mode for me.

Make It Your Own

The backbone of the WWE 2K series is in the Community Creations, and much like it was in WWE 2K22, the Creation Suite in WWE 2K23 is simply outstanding. Visual Concepts added over 600 new pieces to be used, creating Superstars, arenas, and everything else you can create, and if that’s not good enough, there are ways to upload your own creations to the game. I was able to upload my own logo from my YouTube channel that I can use on my wrestling attire in the game.

The best part about creations is that even if you don’t feel like you are personally very creative, there are tons of other fans all over the world creating things and uploading them to the servers. I was able to download a bunch of new versions of current WWE superstars as well as legends for the past or even top stars from other promotions through Community Creations, and the game has barely been available to anyone outside of the media! I am looking forward to adding tons of pop culture characters and having them battle in Royal Rumbles soon.

As far as game modes are concerned, the biggest addition to WWE 2K23 is in the form of War Games, and I think people are going to love this. You can do matches that are either 3v3 or 4v4 and pick your team and battle it out across two rings side by side, surrounded by a steel cage. Once all your wrestlers are in the ring, the first team to gain a pinfall wins. They did a really great job with this, and I think people are really going to love playing War Games online.

I think anyone that gets into a season sports simulation-style game understands what they are getting. You are paying to have the shiny new toy with some new bells and whistles and the hope that the changes made are enough to be worthy of your purchase, and I believe that is something Visual Concepts has accomplished with WWE 2K23. They have made the best of their time and really delivered on a beautiful game that was well thought out and created with reverence for their community of fans and the WWE Superstars they are putting in the game.

My experience in San Antonio was very unique because I had the opportunity to meet and interact with a bunch of the team at Visual Concepts as well as see some of the Superstars experience the game themselves. One of my favorite memories is sitting behind Seth Rollins as he went through the limited roster we could play with and finding out that his wife, Becky Lynch, had a higher rating than him. I also really enjoyed watching Bobby Lashley’s kids play against each other, with one of them being their father and the other being Brock Lesnar.

This is what these games are all about and why I believe that if you are a fan of WWE, there has never been a better time to jump in the action in WWE video games. WWE 2K23 is outstanding, and I think there is really something here for everyone.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros

  • Updated roster with lots of new wrestlers.
  • New Game Mode: War Games is an awesome addition.
  • Even better Creator Suite – Improved and bigger than ever,
  • John Cena Showcase.
  • The UI is a big improvement over last year’s, even if it remains similar in many ways. Colors and art go a long way.

Cons

  • Like most sports games, sort of acts as a small update from the previous game
  • Spoilers – Action Figure John Cena seems to only be in My Faction

Diablo 3 Update 1.45 Rolled Out This March 14

Blizzard Entertainment has released Diablo 3 update 1.45 today. Given we just got the Season 28 patch just last month, don’t expect anything big from this outside of fixes. Check out what’s new in the Diablo 3 March 14 patch notes.

Diablo 3 Update 1.45 Patch Notes | Diablo 3 March 14 Patch Notes:

Update: Blizzard has still not issued any patch notes for the update. The last confirmed bug fix was for text issues with Blizzard Community Manager FIlthieRich acknowledging the issue and confirming it was fixed:

We’ve taken note of an issue with Echoing Nightmares causing missing or incorrect information to be shown to the player for those playing in non-English speaking Europe or Asia regions. A hotfix is currently planned for release for this soon.

Update: As of 2/24/2023 – PC, XBOX, and PlayStation console builds have been updated to correct this issue. The Nintendo Switch is slated for an update soon.

Over on the game’s subreddit, the patch hasn’t fixed the pet salvage shop exploit (via Hindsyy).

Once we know more, we’ll update the article again.

Unfortunately, Blizzard has not acknowledged today’s patch just yet. Browsing the official Diablo 3 forums, there’s no mention of any changes planned. Hopefully, this tweaks the Gibbering Gemstone drop rates for players’ sake.

We’re on the lookout for any changes made. If you spot any gameplay-related changes, leave a comment below to let us know.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! Review – Yakuza Prequel Remake Delights

Nine years after it released on the PlayStation 3 and PS4 exclusively in Japan, Like a Dragon: Ishin! has finally released worldwide, this time as a remake for current and last-gen consoles. We’ve spent some time brawling, slicing and shooting around the Bakumatsu-era version of Japan, and have prepared our Like a Dragon: Ishin! PS5 review much like Kiryu Ryoma prepares for yet another fight.

Good Looks, Could Be Better

The original release launched in between console generations, on both the PS3 and PS4. Here, things are similar in that the remake has launched on the PS4 and PS5. There’s not much difference between the two, as there are no graphics settings on the PS5 version, nor is there extensive use of the DualSense controller other than the LED, which the DualShock 4 also sports. Load times are, of course, extremely quick on the PS5, as is expected of its zippy SSD, and this is clearly one game that doesn’t tax the hardware much.

The Unreal Engine 4 was chosen to render Like a Dragon, and it does an admirable job, even if the source material is a bit dated at this point. Or perhaps, because of it. Main characters and most locations appear to have been updated, but some NPCs are jarringly low in details. This isn’t something you’ll really pay attention to as you hand wannabe gangsters their asses, but occasionally you might find yourself noticing things appear a little…off. Otherwise, though, the striking architecture of the late Edo-period island nation of Japan feels like a whole different world, with gun combat giving a hint of what the world was about to witness.

Ol’ Pistol = OP

Speaking of guns, protagonist Ryoma may have trained as a samurai, but the changes of the day have dictated that he also become adept with a revolver. He does so hilariously without much in the way of training at all. As soon as Ryoma picks up his first Model 2 revolver, he has impeccable aim and unlimited regular ammo. It honestly feels like a built-in easy mode for all but the toughest of enemies, and even most of those can be felled by having a proper special pack of bullets. Also, despite riddling your opponents with multiple bullet wounds, they tend to simply slink away when the fight is over, rather than die as they bleed out had the fight taken place in real life. A bit of suspension of disbelief is needed here because the way you can light up enemies is comically unrealistic.

If Ryoma reminds you of a certain someone in earlier Yakuza games, that’s because he is basically Kiryu in most ways but his name. Ryu Ga Gotoku had the ingenious idea of taking many of the same voice actors and character models and simply plopping them into a different timeline. At its core, the story is still a fight for justice on behalf of an outcast, honorable fighter who believes in justice, no matter the personal cost. Ryoma often goes toe-to-toe with multiple enemies, and is generally a no-frills badass. The overall tone of Ishin! is serious, though there are some randomly comical moments spliced in to help ease some of the tension. Again, it’s basically Yakuza but set in a much earlier timeline.

To that end, expect to see a lot of familiar faces and hear many familiar voices, including but not limited to Majima, Haruka, and others, but with different names, histories, and even behaviors. Well, except for Haruka, who inexplicably remains Haruka. This is a unique twist you won’t really find in many other games, simply because not many other games have as long of a history, and because the concept of transplanting established characters into whole new timelines just isn’t done often.

Battle-Tested Combat

As this is a remake, combat remains more or less the same as before. There are four different fighting styles, all switchable at any time with a tap of the directional pad: Brawler for hand-to-hand combat, Swordsman which is katana-centered, Gunman which utilizes guns, and finally Wild Dancer which sees Ryoma using a pistol in one hand and a katana in the other, giving up the ability to guard in the process. Combat feels fine for the most part, but there is no locking on to opponents, and dodging can occasionally be delayed if Ryoma is in the beginning of an attack animation. It takes a little bit of time to get used to each fighting style, however once things click you can feel like a badass as you string combos together. As in other Yakuza/Like a Dragon games, items strewn about the area can be picked up and used against enemies as well.

Outside of combat, there are plenty of things to do. For starters, there are side quests galore, as Ryoma isn’t one to back down from helping people. As this is set in the mid-1800s, there are no karaoke bars or batting cages. However, there are singing halls, katana practice, and even mahjong as that game had been invented by this point in time. If you opt to stick to the main campaign, expect completion to arrive at around the 35-hour mark, while completing Ishin! in its entirety will likely take perhaps twice that length. The entire game is single-player, and a New Game Plus mode is available once the campaign is cleared. Beyond that, there are also dungeons to clear, and a side activity named Another Life which sees Ryoma helping Haruka clear a large debt in her name by fishing, cooking, and other activities such as selling items in a store. I’m not sure any of these activities beat killing time in an arcade, but they do kill the time nonetheless.

Verdict

Like a Dragon: Ishin! checks all the boxes for fans of the series. Chock-full of things to do, people to fight, food to eat, stuff to collect, and more, it feels so comfortably familiar that you can’t help but to enjoy your stay in 1860’s Tosa and Kyo regions. Some aspects of the game’s design may feel lifted from two generations ago, and the combat tweaking feels conservative, but otherwise this will be a fine entry for veterans and newcomers alike to take a stab/shot/dance at.

Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • A solid remake
  • Lots to see and do in late-Edo Japan
  • Varied combat

Cons:

  • Inconsistent asset quality
  • Pistol quickly feels like a crutch

Given Reddit is still borked, we really can’t tell how many reports and which Call of Duty games are affected, but rest assured, you’re not the only one experiencing issues connecting. Hopefully, this is just for today, as the big Season 2 Reloaded patch is set to drop tomorrow alongside the start of the new season.

New Tchia Gameplay Video Highlights the Game’s Various Open World Activities and Collectibles

Like any other open-world game, Tchia features various activities scattered around the game’s map for players to try out. A new Tchia gameplay video by Awaceb briefly showcases some of these activities, including collectible hunting, time attack races, and more.

Have a look at the full video below:

Time attack races are nothing new to open-world titles, with Hogwarts Legacy being a recent example that featured this type of minigame. In Tchia, however, you get to try them out on foot, on a boat, or even as an animal. There are also more unique activities to pass the time with, including a diving competition and a shooting range.

As for collectibles, players will be able to find them scattered across the map. They can be found under the water and atop cliffs, which does suggest that you may need to put in a bit of effort to find all of them. Your efforts will be rewarded, however, as you can exchange these collectibles for cosmetics. If you’re looking to spice up your wardrobe without collecting items, an alternative in the crane minigame will also nab you similar rewards.

Tchia launches next week this March 21 on PS4, PS5, and PC.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores to Feature More Detailed Cutscenes and Areas Thanks to PS5’s Power

Horizon Forbidden West: Forbidden Shores, the upcoming DLC for the sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn, is set to come out exclusively on PS5. And while this does mean that PS4 players won’t be able to experience Aloy’s journey across Los Angeles, it also opened up opportunities for developer Guerrilla Games to make a more detailed and vibrant expansion.

A recent interview with Horizon Forbidden West’s game director, Mathijs de Jonge, revealed that the PS5’s hardware improvements over the last-gen console gave the developers more resources to work with in Forbidden Shores. In particular, it allowed one of the expansion’s settlements to run with more activity and allow a certain battle scene to feature more action.

Q: How have you taken advantage of PS5’s power to create Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores?

A: One of our key priorities with Horizon games is to add a ton of detail and richness to our environments. On Horizon Forbidden West, everything we added or increased was something we’d need to have a plan around how to optimize for PS4 as well. On Burning Shores, since we can just focus on PS5, we’ve been able to charge forward and we’re really excited about what we’ve been able to pull off in creating this stunning post-post-apocalyptic version of Los Angeles.

The cityscape ruins of LA and its surroundings are highly detailed and require a lot of processing power as well as fast streaming technology to run properly; especially when the player is flying over the lands and can see a lot at once. One of the settlements is situated in and around those detailed ruins, and we were able to squeeze a lot of activity in there.

Another notable one is a particular battle scene that requires a LOT of memory and processing power! To achieve this grand vision both technically and creatively, we definitely were thankful for the many advantages that the PS5 hardware brings.

Aside from the DLC itself, the PS5 version of the base game also sports certain improvements over the PS4 version, including better lighting, better framerate and resolution, and other features, such as Variable Refresh Rate.

Q: Horizon Forbidden West delivers fantastic visual effects, animations and immersive audio during combat encounters, especially when battling some of the larger machines. How have you taken advantage of PS5 to deliver these rich visual performances and what can we expect from Burning Shores?

A: Using the PS5’s processing power we can run certain simulations at higher speed creating more lifelike results and a better gameplay experience. On PS5, the Horizon Forbidden West base game runs at a higher resolution and at a higher framerate than on PS4, and assets are more detailed which makes the overall quality much better. There is also a special lighting setup for Aloy that we normally only display during cinematics, but is active on the PS5 at all times. On PS5 we can draw at higher detail much further into the distance, displaying the stunning vistas our players encounters all across the map. We also support 40Hz Mode and Variable Refresh Rate on capable TVs for even more fluid gameplay.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is set to launch this April 19 on PS5.

“Shame Legacy” New Occult Survival Horror Game Slithers Out May 30 for PC and Consoles

Publisher Destructive Creations has now unveiled Shame Legacy, a new occult survival horror game developed by Fairyship Games and Revenant Games and set for a May 30 release on PC and consoles. Along with the digital release, players on PS5 will also be able to purchase a special box edition of the game from Meridiem Games.

Watch the Shame Legacy reveal trailer below:

Shame Legacy is set in a 19th-century cultist village, where the player character wakes up at the beginning of the game to find himself surrounded by eldritch horrors and corrupted, bloodthirsty cultists. Players must guide the protagonist through careful stealth gameplay to avoid the cultists’ rampage and piece together his story and how his family is somehow connected to the horrifying situation he finds himself trapped in.

From the developers:

Shame Legacy is a first-person survival-horror, set in a 19th century forsaken cultist village. You attempt to survive using stealth and escape mechanics. By solving puzzles, you figure out your connection to it all. Meanwhile, an eerie danger looms over…

Waking up confused in a past equivalent of an anger management convention, you quickly realize that: 1. A hunt is taking place, 2. You’re the prey they’re after.
The legacy of your family seems to have caught up to you, but maybe not in the way you’d expect. Apparently an inheritance doesn’t always mean fancy yachts.

If you hope to get to the bottom of it all, you’ve got to move silently and avoid contact. The villagers are all over the place, looking for you. And they’re damn fast if they see or hear you…
Your mental ability will come in handy when solving puzzles. So will your cane, which also serves as your defense weapon to fend off attacking villagers. Very eco-friendly approach to maximizing assets.

Getting detected isn’t the end of the world if you’re fast enough and can keep your nerves in check. Having just woken up, the village doctor would have some harsh things to say about your health status and stress resistance. If you find yourself close to the edge, there’s always relief to be found. Disclaimer: this isn’t a drug commercial.

Shame Legacy launches on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on May 30, 2023. A physical box release of the PS5 version of the game will also be available from Meridiem Games. Stay tuned here at MP1st for all upcoming Shame Legacy updates and announcements.

First Hyper Light Breaker Gameplay Trailer Revealed, Steam Early Access Delayed to Fall 2023

Heart Machine and Gearbox Publishing have revealed the first Hyper Light Breaker gameplay trailer, giving fans their first look at the gameplay of the “open world rogue-lite” that evokes the mechanics of Fortnite, Breath of the Wild, and Genshin Impact. Unfortunately, the game’s Steam Early Access period has been delayed from its promised Spring 2023 launch window to Fall 2023.

Watch the Hyper Light Breaker gameplay trailer below:

Hyper Light Breaker was first revealed early last year as the sequel to Heart Machine’s beautifully-heartbreaking Hyper Light Drifter title. Unlike the original, Hyper Light Breaker utilizes a third-person point of view, and incorporates multiplayer gameplay in a procedurally-generated world set in the Hyper Light Drifter universe. The gameplay trailer showcases developed melee and ranged combat systems, some form of terrain traversal and manipulation abilities, and possibly an i-frame mechanic all highlighted by bright explosions of color in contrast with the relaxed, deep tones of Hyper Light Drifter.

The game will launch into Steam Early Access in Fall 2023, and can be wishlisted now. While console versions are not currently in the pipeline, Heart Machine hopes to release Hyper Light Breaker on additional platforms down the line. More information about the development of the game can be found on its Steam page as well as a FAQ post on Reddit from the developers.

The Cell Max raid boss update doesn’t have a concrete release date either, so we’ll have to wait for an announcement from Bandai Namco.

Battlefield 2042 Free on Steam & Discounted by 70% Until March 16

Three weeks into the launch of Season 4: Eleventh Hour, DICE has made Battlefield 2042 free to download and play on Steam until 10am PT/1pm ET/1am HKT on March 16. The game has also been discounted by 70% for the base edition and 55% for the Ultimate Edition to incentivize new players to buy the game.

Season 4 of DICE’s Battlefield 2042 began three weeks ago with a host of new content for the game, including a new map, Specialist, weapons, and much more. Season 4 is also the proving ground for the recent class rework, which sought to revive previous games’ class system by organizing Battlefield 2042’s Specialists into four classes with unique strengths and equipment for each class.

While the free-to-play offer has not been extended to the console editions of the game, PlayStation Plus subscribers (all three tiers) can pick the game up for free this month to keep forever, while the Xbox player base can enjoy the game at no additional cost through the Xbox Game Pass service. Should you choose to head into Battlefield 2042 during the offer, be sure to check out our weekly reset post featuring this week’s Battle Pass missions, Portal modes, and new store bundles.
